Brave Review

Brave, this summer’s entry into Pixar’s pantheon of yearly animated feature films, at times feels like classic Pixar clockwork and at other’s like a new path being discovered for the first time. As much as it owes to the established Pixar (and Disney) storytelling conventions that we’ve grown up knowing, there’s a lot in directors Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman (and co-director Steve Purcell’s) film that feels just fresh enough (and sometimes strange enough) to warrant the name “Brave”. I could go into detail on where the story waxes when maybe we would expect it to wane but that would be spoiling one of the most interesting and rewarding films that Pixar has ever made.

Really, this is a movie that would be spoiled by knowing what awaits you, and I urge anyone reading this to avoid any and all possible spoilers. And I’ll avoid using any of them in my review here. Disney’s ad campaign has been great in not telling us anything about the actual plot and I would even warn you from the film’s IMDB page if you want to go into the film completely fresh.

So what IS safe to know going in? Well, why not start with what we all already know? Brave is the story of the young Celtic princess Merida (Kelly Macdonald), first born of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). Upon coming of age, Merida will be married off to the first born son of one of the three Clan Leaders, Lord Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane), Lord MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd) or Lord Macintosh (Craig Ferguson). And since Merida is a feisty young girl who would rather find her own destiny on the back of her horse with a bow in her hand than have others choose it for her, she sets out to thwart her parents and remain unmarried.

The rest of this movie is on point too.

You got all that? Great… because that’s the first 20 to 30 minutes of the movie. The rest of the running time sees the film go in some really interesting directions as Merida goes off to cut her own path. I wish I could tell you more about the plot, including some of my favorite moments, but I really want you to discover this movie for yourselves and the campaigns for the film have done such a great job in keeping things secret. My job is in reviewing the film, not ruining it. Just know that once Merida sets this snowball rolling, it begins to grow beyond her control, knocking down everything in its path and awakening both past secrets and inner truths. As soon as the “plot” started kicking in and going into some strange places, I turned to my friend Brian Walton and whispered “did you know what this movie was about?” He shook his head no. “It’s fantastic.”

And it is… for many reasons. Probably the strongest and most obvious reason is that Brave has the strongest female characters of any of the Pixar movies. And I don’t just mean Merida, although she’s pretty strong and fantastic to watch as she grows through the trials and lessons of the film. But Merida’s mother, Queen Elinor, works as a wise and patient counterweight to Merida’s youthful impatience. The movie is very much about this central relationship and how both characters grow from one another. It’s also how they work to define not only their own lives, but their family and the legacy of their kingdom. I don’t recall Disney or Pixar telling a story that had this strong of a female message or protagonist without the counterweight of a Prince or a male hero. In fact, the males in the film are all entirely used as comedic relief or as cautionary tales. Knowing that little boys make up so much of the toy buying market that drives these summer films (last summer’s “Cars 2” seemed to be completely dictated by it), it was a brave decision (there’s that word again) to make a children’s summer tentpole movie that relies entirely on a female driven story.

And it works. Not only were there no little boys complaining of boredom when the lights came up, there didn’t seem to be a whole lot of dry eyes as well. “Brave” gets very emotionally intense, especially at the end. I was asked by a friend if he could take his 4 year old daughter to see the film and I had to pause and think on it. There are some really scary sequences in the film, and again that ending did a number on everyone. I know that “Toy Story 3” has that scene in the end that everyone quotes as being the scariest, most intense moment in a Disney movie, and it maybe still is, but these two sequences are emotionally intense in two different ways. In the way that Toy Story 3’s end scene found the collective heroes resigned to a horrific fate, but at least there was no question that they were “together in the end”, the emotional ending of “Brave” has everything relying on the shoulders of one female hero and whether or not she did the right thing… and was it enough in the end? It’s just as heartbreaking as the idea that you may not ever see Buzz and Woody again. I could keep arguing on the permanent ramifications and differences of each ending but I’m coming very close to telling too much and that’s something I swore not to do. Just come prepared with some tissues.

The Comedy Rule of 3s applies here… the funniest characters in the movie.

In the end, is “Brave” the best of the Pixar films? I don’t think there’s ever going to be a definite answer for that but it’s definitely one of the best and one of the most interesting. And it’s great to see Monkey Island alum and Sam and Max creator Steve Purcell involved in such a huge film. There is a sequence in the movie in which I thought “wow… that like something they would have put in a Lucasarts adventure game”! And sure enough, Steve’s name was right there in the titles. Tonally, the movie plays light and dark better than most of the Pixar films, and swings between the two probably the widest and the most frequently while hanging the audience out to dry for the longest stretches of time in the most uncomfortable middle, where you really don’t know where this movie is headed. While some detractors have named this as a reason to not enjoy the film, I argue that it’s what makes it one of the most interesting and I can’t wait to see it again because there seemed to be plenty still left unexplored. Technologically and visually, Pixar is still the company to beat. Even though the film has a bit in common with the similar setting of “How to Train Your Dragon”, it’s apparent in “Brave” that they are still the masters of the CGI animated film, both on the screen and on the page. I can’t recommend it to you enough and will be venturing back into the wilds of the megaplexes to see it again when it’s released this weekend.

My wife Laura joins me on this episode to talk about the difference between the Resident Evil and Underworld films, talk fictitious characters we’d like to bang and George W Bush’s cameo in Game of Thrones. I also review Beasts of the Southern Wild, Lego Batman 2 and The Amazing Spider-Man on 3DS and Michael Bay’s Ninja Turtles gets delayed! Finally Disney might be bringing Marvel to theme parks and we both pretend we’re eating at the late 90s Marvel restaurant… that really existed! Eat up!

I’m going to put fuller thoughts into the podcast later today but, without the presence of Team Ico’s “The Last Guardian” or “GTA 5”, Nintendo’s WiiU was my main focus at E3 this year. And when Nintendo’s press conference started with the short clip of Miyamoto’s office and little Pikmin running around I lost my damn mind. Just ask Brian Walton. He was sitting right next to me and I was literally screaming. Not one of my prouder moments, but fuck it, I’m getting Pikmin 3!

When the convention doors opened, I b-lined it for Nintendo and stood in line for Pikmin 3. Unlike last year, I only had to wait through two people to get my chance with Pikmin 3 and the new WiiU tablet controls. Really, Pikmin is still Pikmin and I’m 100% okay with that. The Wii-mote controls handle just like Pikmin 1 & 2 do on the current Wii and the first batch of the game that I played was an exploration/collection run through a small map. The biggest boost is the graphics. The game looks gorgeous. The plant leaves and other environmental elements look photo realistic and the animations are smooth. Controlling is really easy and I could actually stay on top of my team of Pikmin a lot more fluidly with the Wii-mote. And the Rock Pikmin are a great addition for delivering damage to enemies and breaking down barriers quickly. The new elements of having your Pikmin also build bridges and other items is fantastic as well.

The new friends I made at E3…

I also got to play through the boss battle, commanding my Pikmin to take down a giant armored caterpillar. I handled this one like a Nintendo vet, first using the Rock Pikmin to shatter the boss’ exterior and then using my Red Pikmin to cling to him and dispense some damage. I know that only two players had stepped up before me… but you’re reading the words of a writer who wrecked that boss in record time. I throttled him.

I slaughtered this thing… SLAUGHTERED IT.

The Wii-U tablet ads a lot to the game. Not only can you control your reticle using the tablet’s gyroscope and accelerometer, but the tablet’s display screen doubles as an overworld map that helps you keep track of your various Pikmin scattered around the map. I found the tablet to be lightweight and really easy to use. Having a map of the entire area at my finger tips also helped the game a lot. You don’t have to go into sub-menus  now in order to access your inventory or select commands. It made the entire experience much more fluid. I hope this is a Day 1 release.

On the other hand is Tank! Tank! Tank!, a competitive port of a popular Japanese arcade game that left the person next to me asking “is this a downloadable title?” Yeah. I agree. Between the graphics and the thin gameplay, there’s not a whole lot here. It is cool to use the camera on the Wii-U pad to take a photo to use as your avatar, but the game itself feels like something you would have played on the PS1. You literally pilot a tank against 3 other characters, or cooperatively work with them to take out enemies, while blasting a ton of junk and picking up power ups. The graphics weren’t great, the game wasn’t that unique and if it wasn’t for the controls, and the fact that I could play and pilot through my Wii-U pad screen instead of share a screen with the other players, I’d say it was completely forgettable.

Tank! Tank! Tank! kinda tanked tanked tanked…

Beyond that, I played around with a graphics display demo called Wii-U Panorama, which showcased the 360 degree graphics capability of the system. I watched pre-filmed demos of real world locations and events and could turn the Wii-U pad in 360 degree directions to get better vantage points on everything I was seeing. It was graphically impressive, but I don’t see anyone buying this unless there’s a way to add your own footage (I don’t possibly see how). I do hope it comes packaged with the system, because it’ll make it a lot easier to explain the technology to house-guests who heard about the Wii-U on the local news.

Okay, those are my hands on thoughts. I didn’t get to visit NintendoLand in my short time but I did experience a few more things. Check out my Geekscapepod Podcast later today with some further thoughts on E3, etc. and keep checking the site for my thoughts on the mech battler Hawken and Star Wars 1313!

According to this article at JoBlo, George Lucas is retiring from commercial filmmaking. We heard some of these sentiments around the time Red Tails was released, and then it was recently announced that longtime friend Kathleen Kennedy was taking over operation of Lucasfilm. Now this seems to confirm it.

As the article quotes, “I’m moving away from the company, I’m moving away from all my businesses, I’m finishing all my obligations and I’m going to retire to my garage with my saw and hammer and build hobby movies. I’ve always wanted to make movies that were more experimental in nature, and not have to worry about them showing in movie theatres.”

You mean the prequels WEREN’T experimental films!?! So, let’s ask it: Is this the end of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones cinematic universes? And are you interested in seeing some of George’s “hobby movies”?

E3 2012 has begun! In this episode, I give my thoughts on the Nintendo WiiU announcements from yesterday as well as my thoughts after attending Microsoft’s E3 press conference! Have they gone completely towards peripherals or are there actually any games coming out? PLUS! Why Batman doesn’t work!

I’m up at 5am and there’s no way I’m going to sleep after having just seen this story and PS3 gameplay trailer for Ni No Kuni, the videogame collaboration between Level-5 (The Professor Layton series) and Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away and so many more incredible movies it’ll make you crazy) coming to both the Nintendo DS and PS3. And included at the end of the trailer is a Western release date for the game of January 22nd!

Unless The Last Guardian suddenly gets a release date (and gets finished), this looks like it might be my favorite game of 2013 already. Yes, I’m still a GTA fanatic, and we’ll see what GTA 5 holds in store, but this game looks like a complete and fresh opposite to that experience so I’m going to start it off in my “Most Anticipated Game of 2013” slot (and I’ll only have 22 days of 2013 in which to wait for it!

It was the summer of 1995 when I first went with a friend to the UTexas Anime Club screening of Studio Ghibli’s Laputa: Castle in the Sky and I have been a Studio Ghibli fanatic ever since, still owning all of my fan for fan made VHS tapes of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and My Neighbor Totoro and everything else Studio Ghibli that I could feverishly get. This trailer brought many of those feelings that I was discovering a new form of masterful storytelling right back. And after last weekend, in which Laura spent both plane flights back and forth to Mexico playing one of Level-5’s Professor Layton games, this household is prepped and ready! I’m still excited to see more details on the DS version of the game and hopefully I’ll return from E3 next week with more to share!

Even after his cinematic rejuvenation in The Avengers, the Hulk might still “smash” on TV!

In a press call this morning, ABC’s Paul Lee revealed that ABC and Marvel are still moving forward on a Hulk TV show, while they have passed on “AKA Jessica Jones”, based on the Brian Michael Bendis’ Alias book.

In an article posted on Deadline about ABC’s slate announcement, the following blurb reveals ABC’s plans for the series:

The only property from Disney-owned Marvel still in active development at ABC is Hulk, which was set up one and half years ago with Guillermo Del Toro and David Eick attached. Lee said the project will be in consideration for the next pilot cycle. I hear Del Toro is still on board. ABC has passed on the Aka Jessica Jones adaptation whose writer, Twilight‘s Melissa Rosenberg, has a new series on ABC, Red Widow.

So sorry, Jessica Jones. We’ll have to wait a little longer to see you on a TV or film screen. And it’ll be at least another year for Hulk. Now how much longer will we have to wait to see “some Luke Cage up in this bitch!?!” (which is how Tyrese would play him if he got the chance).

Okay, so I didn’t really bid. I knew that the original TMNT illustration was going to go for boku bucks when Kevin Eastman came on Geekscape and talked to me about this amazing auction! Go back and listen to the hour plus episode if you haven’t already!

And now it has. According to the below press release, the original piece of Eastman artwork (pictured below) sold for $71,700 on Friday, May 11, at Heritage Auctions in Dallas.

Congrats to Kevin and the entire TMNT crew!

If you are jones-ing for some old school Ninja Turtles, IDW just put out a colored version of the original Eastman and Laird first issue last week in comic shops. Definitely seek it out. I read it last night before going to sleep and Laura asked me why I was crying in bed. I told her “tears of joy, my love, half-shelled, weapon slinging tears of joy.” She said “you’re weird” and went to sleep.

Here is the original press release from Heritage Auctions:

First Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Illustration brings $71,700 at Heritage Auctions

Auctioned by Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman via Heritage Auctions; The first full artwork of the TMNT, which led to one of the most successful comics character franchises in history

DALLAS – The first-ever full artwork of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird – the illustration that launched one of the most successful character franchises in history – sold for $71,700 on Friday, May 11, at Heritage Auctions in Dallas as part of a Vintage Comics & Comic Art Auction. It sold to an anonymous buyer.

The drawing was consigned by Turtles Co-Creator Kevin Eastman, who drew it with Laird one night in late November, 1983. Eastman has designated an undisclosed percentage of profits from the auction proceeds to benefit The Hero Initiative, a non-profit he is active with that provides a financial safety net for comic artists and writers (www.heroinitiative.org).

“What an incredibly exciting week this has been! The Turtles have been blessed with the best fans on the planet, so I chose this event to make available personal historical TMNT items for those really hardcore supporters – but WHOA – what a response!” wrote Eastman in a statement to the auction house. “My many, many, thanks to all the fans that have given me the best job in the world, and for their love for a great, goofy, bunch of green guys that just wanted to be normal teenagers – Mutant Ninja ones anyway!”

“There was widespread international interest from collectors and fans of the Turtles alike,” Barry Sandoval, Director of Operations for the Comics Department at Heritage, “and the impressive price realized for this artwork is tribute to that. For 30 years the Turtles have been a worldwide phenomenon, entertaining hundreds of millions of children and that influence shows no sign of slowing with the upcoming TV and film projects featuring the team. This is a piece of pop culture that will only increase in value and influence over the coming decades.”

Heritage Auctions, headed by Steve Ivy, Jim Halperin and Greg Rohan, is the world’s third largest auction house, with annual sales more than $800 million, and 700,000+ online bidder members. For more information about Heritage Auctions, and to join and gain access to a complete record of prices realized, along with full-color, enlargeable photos of each lot, please visit HA.com.

Pikmin 2 is one of the greatest games of the Gamecube era. Actually, I think it’s one of the greatest games of all time. And now it’s coming to the Wii as part of the Nintendo Selects series (along with a few more titles getting new retail prices and packaging).

When Nintendo went motion control in 2006 with the Wii, this is probably the game that gamers wanted ported over. It was an obvious choice. When Captain Olimar was playable in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, gamers started getting excited about the possibility. Pikmin 1 was soon ported over, but as great as it is, it’s no Pikmin 2. And now with Pikmin 3 potentially getting announced at E3 in a few weeks, it seems the right time to get gamers re-aquainted to the Captain, his co-pilot Louie and their new plant helper friends (but man when you let them die… there is no greater agony to your soul)!

I’m looking forward to June 10th. This is great, great news. Hopefully Pikmin 3 is something I can StreetPass with… or maybe it’ll be a WiiU title! Here’s the full press release, with news on Mario Power Tennis and new prices for Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Donkey Kong Country Returns:

Nintendo is adding two great games to the Nintendo Selects value collection for the Wii console on June 10 with Mario Power Tennis and Pikmin 2, a Nintendo GameCube classic making its U.S. debut on Wii. Nintendo Selects games are available at a suggested retail price of $19.99.

Separately, two of the best-selling Wii games of all time will be getting new prices: Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Donkey Kong Country Returns each will be available at a suggested retail price of $29.99. The value pricing provides shoppers with a great way to expand their game collections with some of the hottest Wii games around.

Pikmin 2 has updated controls optimized for the Wii console as players help brave Captain Olimar and his assistant, Louie, salvage treasures and return them to their home planet. In addition to the original red, blue and yellow Pikmin from the first game, players can also take command of purple and white Pikmin, creating a wealth of new strategic options. Additionally, Pikmin 2 features a frantic, two-player split-screen multiplayer battle mode, for which additional accessories are required and are sold separately.

Mario Power Tennis lets players power up their tennis game by swinging the Wii Remote to smack powerful forehands and backhands. Players can take on the role of their favorite Mushroom Kingdom characters and play on imaginative courts not possible in the real world, including a court littered with Mario-style power-ups. As players win tournaments, clear minigames or challenge Gimmick Courts, they unlock new characters, courts and challenges. Up to four players can compete in wild multiplayer action.

The fan-favorite Super Smash Bros. Brawl features dozens of characters from numerous Nintendo games and franchises in a battle royale. Up to four players can battle in the same room or over a broadband Internet connection. To date the game has sold nearly 5.5 million in the United States alone.

Donkey Kong Country Returns is a new take on the classic platforming, barrel-blasting and banana-hoarding franchise. The game features the first simultaneous cooperative game-play mode for the series, allowing both novice and skilled players to play the game together. Players run, jump, climb and defeat enemies through diverse environments until they retrieve Donkey Kong’s stolen banana hoard. The game has sold more than 2.5 million in the United States.

Other games in the Nintendo Selects collection include Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Strikers Charged, Punch-Out!!, Super Paper Mario, Wii Sports, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Animal Crossing: City Folk and Mario Super Sluggers.

The fine folks at Warner Bros. want you to know that Gremlins and Gremlins 2: The New Batch are finally out on Blu-ray today. In fact, the Gremlins disc is a 25th Anniversary Edition and both pretty loaded with extras.

I’ve been waiting for these to be released for a while now. The first Gremlins movie holds a really special place in my heart. I remember my father taking my brother Paul and I to see it while my older brother Daniel went to see The Karate Kid with my mom. It drove me nuts. I wanted a Gizmo of my own. At the same time, I was haunted by the horrible things that would happen if I ever messed up and I was pretty scarred by the final image of Stripe’s skeleton falling apart in the last scene in the garden center. At the same time, we laughed like crazy when the old woman in the motorized lift went sailing out the window. Really, what person who grew up in the 80s and 90s doesn’t know the rules for raising a Mogwai?

The movie really has so many scenes that have become classic. I almost feel sorry for kids today because there’s really no modern equivalent. Can you think of a kids movie released in the last 20 years that is just as dark, funny and well done as the original Gremlins (and remember that Jurassic Park is now over 20 years old!)? Joe Dante really doesn’t get enough credit for what he and Stephen Spielberg accomplished with this film (and my wife considers it a holiday staple).

Now, Gremlins 2: The New Batch is a mixed bag, but one that I’ve come to love almost as much over the years. It really took a lot of risks with some of the jokes (a sexualized hooker Gremlin anybody?) and is kind of a more interesting movie in some respects. The first time that I saw it was in Guadalajara with my cousins and besides being the first time I’d seen Christopher Lee on film, it led to one of the big mysteries of my childhood. It concerns the scene midway through the movie in which the fourth wall is broken and Hulk Hogan shows up to address the audience and get rid of the Gremlins that are interrupting the film. Now, thanks to Wikipedia, I know that The Hulkster is in the theatrical version of the film. But on home video, the scene was altered to have a voice acted John Wayne kick the Gremlins out of your VCR. I got in so many middle school arguments while insisting that Hulk Hogan was in a version of that scene… and I was right! I just couldn’t prove it until the advent of Youtube or this Blu-ray was finally released! It has the alternate home video sequence as one of the extras!

Okay. So I love these films. As much as I want to see the franchise continue, if it’s not done right, I’d rather live with what we’ve got. And these Blu-rays make that option so much more agreeable.

Agreeable…?

Here’s the box art for each, their synopsis (in case you’re living in a cave and know nothing about Gremlins) and the extras for each disc. And I look forward to having you over this holiday for a Gremlins 2 part marathon… but it has to be over by midnight.

Gremlins (it’s $7.99 from the WB store? Ridiculous!)

Gremlins is a wildly original roller-coaster ride of hilarious mischief. One minute your hair will stand on end, the next you’ll hold your sides with laughter at the havoc these supposedly gentle furballs create when the rules surrounding their care and feeding are inadvertently broken one fateful Christmas. Written by Chris Columbus and directed by Joe Dante, Gremlins unleashes special effects that dazzle and enchant and merriment that lingers in the memory. And isn’t that “what superior popular moviemaking is all about” (Richard Corliss, Time).

The Avengers is out and it’s time to get serious! Ian Kerner makes his triumphant return to Geekscape as he goes toe to toe with me on what he thought about “The Avengers”! We’ve both seen the movie twice and if there’s one person who knows The Avengers comic and movie universe inside and out, it’s Ian. I try desperately to play devil’s advocate but Ian just won’t have it. He explains to us the significance of all the little details in the movie, where he thinks the Marvel movie universe is headed from here and the ONE thing that bugged him in the film! It’s Assemble Time, baby!

If I know one thing, it’s that the U.S. of A. is in love with two things: pro wrestling and NASCAR!

And hallelujah, brother, because this brand new official trailer for The Expendables 2 has healthy doses of bad ass dudes beating each other up and kick ass machines making a serious mess… oh, and tons of explosions!

I honestly think that this is going to be a hilariously fun time. Will it win any awards? Yeah. From bad ass tough guys. Who else matters? This trailer has it all. Arnold. Willis. Stallone. Lundgren. Norris. Cruz. Statham. Jet Li. And the Geekscape founding father himself: Jean Claude Van Damme!

Bring it on already!

I’ve played zero Pokemon in over 10 years so I think I’ll just let the Nintendo press release speak for me in this instant. I know that this new Pokemon title is a bit of a curiosity… but aren’t they all? The fans seem to all have their favorites. Are there any that have been unanimous duds (but still probably sold a jillion ka-zillion copies)?

Anyway, here’s Nintendo:

Following last month’s announcement of Pokémon Conquest, Nintendo has revealed even more details about the new features available in the game, which launches for the Nintendo DS family of systems on June 18. Players can look forward to exploring the Ransei region and interacting with Pokémon in an entirely new way as they take on the role of a young Warlord who is linked with a Pokémon. Together they must set out to recruit Warrior allies to strengthen their growing kingdom. Developed by TECMO KOEI GAMES Co., Ltd., the game can also be played on the Nintendo 3DS system in 2D mode.

New information includes the following:

Story: To save the Ransei region from Nobunaga, a powerful Warlord who is trying to take over Ransei, players must conquer different kingdoms to strengthen and grow their own kingdom. There are 17 kingdoms in total to conquer. Conquering all 17 kingdoms and ultimately uniting the kingdom will awaken the Legendary Pokémon and save the land from destruction. Story mode is organized by episodes. Players unlock episodes as they progress and each episode features a different playable Warlord and victory conditions.

Army Mechanics: Players can grow their army by recruiting defeated Warlords and their Pokémon. After a kingdom is conquered, players will also have access to the kingdom facilities such as training grounds, shops to buy items and mines for money. Players can also strengthen their army by linking with Pokémon. Warlords can have various linked Pokémon and switch between them before battle to strategically prepare for the type of battle they are about to engage in.

Battle Mechanics: Players will encounter a wide range of battlefields as they progress through the game. Each of the 17 kingdoms has a different type-themed battlefield. For example, in the fire-themed kingdom of Ignis, players can battle around lava flows, lava beds and fire spouts. Strategically using water-type Pokémon to navigate through this battlefield will help players conquer this kingdom. Additionally, players can use the kingdom training grounds to train their army or find wild Pokémon and link with them. After battling with a Warlord, the game automatically registers them. Using the built-in local wireless features of Nintendo DS, players can use their registered armies to battle with friends who also own the game.

Warlords and Pokémon: Each Warlord has a special ability that can change the tide of battle. For example, Warlord Oichi has the ability to heal all the Pokémon in a player’s army. Also, like Pokémon, Warlords have types that will determine how well they link to particular Pokémon. Some Warlords will have the ability to choose from and link with several different kinds of Pokémon.

Last night, Dolph Lundgren posted some new Expendables 2 posters to his Facebook fan page (and you know I’m a member of that group). I hadn’t seen these anywhere, except for the Stallone and Arnold shots, so I thought I’d make up a gallery and share with you these bad ass character posters for each actor who’s part of the most kick ass action ensemble this summer!

What, you thought it was The Avengers?!? The Avengers don’t have JCVD! That enough puts The Expendables over the top! Now check these out!

If you’ve been following Geekscape for a while now, what you’re about to read might astound you… I’m about to heap some serious praise on The Walking Dead. Now please keep in mind that I do like The Walking Dead. I’ve read the entire comic series, have watched every episode and this past weekend played through the first chapter of Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead episodic adventure title. We’re even good friends with one of the show’s supervising producers, a recent Geekscape guest.

But like the actual dead having returned to life, the various Walking Dead iterations have each felt surprising at first, then compelling, then slowly a bit laborious and as they continue along, less and less fresh. I like The Walking Dead. I wouldn’t put myself through it if I didn’t… but it’s been a while since I consistently loved The Walking Dead comic or TV series.

Well, and I hope that I’m not predicting impending decay, I LOVE The Walking Dead video game, at least the first chapter, recently released by Telltale Games for PSN, XBL and PC. In fact, and please leave your crazy accusations in the comments, it might be my favorite version. And I’ll explain why (because those are some pretty big statements right there!).

First off, it follows the more compelling storyline of Kirkman’s original comic book series. It actually takes place just as the Atlanta of the comic book series is going to hell, being evacuated and Rick lies unconscious in a hospital bed. It doesn’t as much parallel the events of the comic book as much as give it a bit of a prequel or alternative point of view. In the first chapter, A New Day, you do run into some characters and locales from the comic book series, but this is before Rick and his group encountered them… and you actually take part in setting the stage for those characters. This is a huge plus for anyone who’s a Walking Dead fan, because you feel as though what you’re doing matters to characters that you care about. It gives you a responsibility to protect what will come later.

Which leads me to the greatest plus of this series and why it’s a much different experience than the comic book or TV series or even other zombie games like Left 4 Dead or Resident Evil. The Walking Dead game, more than the comic or the series, really strives to and succeeds at putting you squarely in the shoes of the survivors, in this case through the eyes of the controllable character Lee Everett, who is always at the center of every decision the group must make within the story.

The artwork and writing are fantastic, easily the best we’ve seen from Telltale and the game play is intensely compelling. This is very much an adventure game, but it doesn’t come without some action sequences (and you can definitely die while playing). In fact, a lot of the decision making processes, even conversations with other characters, give you the same adrenaline rush as the game’s quicktime events. The Walking Dead autosaves, so if you flub a conversation, leading others to mistrust or lose faith in you, those decisions are immediate and permanent. I found myself just as stressed out by doing what I perceived was the right choices in the conversations as I did while stuck between saving survivors, knowing that whoever I didn’t save wasn’t only dead in this episode but the rest of the series. The choices that you make in this game haunt you and I was soon playing the game with trepidation, weary that I’d make a wrong move and get someone permanently killed or lose an ally I would need later. Hell, I was also scared that I’d miss some detail in scouring the environments that would end up keep us alive down the road!

This is where the writing and the characterization really differs from my recent experiences with the comic and TV series. I find myself really caring about the characters involved, probably out of this engaged responsibility for them. Even characters that you don’t get along with strengthen the group, just by being able to help move a car or hold a weapon. The game’s characters and situations all live within a gray area, Lee having escaped from the back of a police car in the opening sequence of the game, and it keeps you there, so decision making is sometimes difficult. Not only are you immediately responsible for yourself, but when Lee discovers the young abandoned girl Clementine early on, your responsibility to make the right choices grows.

In Left 4 Dead or Resident Evil, things are very black and white. Here, nothing is very clear. Even when you think that two choices in a dialogue tree would lead to the same result, the way that you choose to word things might give you a result from another character that you didn’t anticipate. This not only makes them more realistic but gives them relatability. Everyone seems to be in a state of shock at their surroundings and it makes the story that much more compelling. You don’t see Carl lazily wandering the farm or someone making dinner. They are all driven by the need to survive.

The gameplay and situations all elaborate further on this concept of responsibility to the group. You control Lee’s movement with the right trigger while exploring the environment’s objects (or what he can see) with the right. Like other adventure games, you sometimes you have to search for items or enter areas to solve puzzles, but very early on you start doing this with other members of the group, putting them, or mainly Clementine, in harm’s way. The game forces you to work carefully in these areas, even if dying means resetting to your last save, because you don’t want them to die, or they’ll be gone from the game’s story forever.

And when a zombie (or in many cases zombies plural) DOES come at you, the game’s quicktime events are more than just button combinations or quick button tapping. You’ll usually find yourself temporarily dazed when the zombie knocks you down or surprises you and you have to move the right reticle towards your attacker just to instigate the quick time event. This really does a great job of forcing the player to “get their wits about them” so they can take back control of these intense situations. I didn’t die much while playing The Walking Dead, but in the moments in which I did, it scared the hell out of me because my shock at having these events thrown at me and not being immediately or obviously prompted to do button mashing gave me that immediate sense of “crap! What do I do!?!”

If I have to talk about the downsides of the game, and there aren’t many, it would be towards the end of the chapter, not necessarily because of the story or character work, but because the “scour environments for objects, use objects” redundancy that plagues all adventure games isn’t completely cured here. If you don’t like adventure games, you might find yourself wanting something more in these areas. But considering that adventure games are my favorite genre, I took these conventional sections of the game as an acceptable byproduct of the chosen form. Telltale do enough fresh things in The Walking Dead, and do them exceedingly well, that this never feels like a tired adventure gaming experience. In doing so, they’ve also injected new life into the Walking Dead brand, which up until now, you could only read or watch as it played out in front of you on a string. I hope that with the release of each of the next four chapters, Telltale continues to effectively expand not only the Walking Dead gameplay and story but the adventure game genre itself.

Author S.G. Browne has been on Geekscape before. He’s also signed at the Geekscape booth at San Diego Comic Con a few times. We first met when his zombie novel “Breathers” brought him onto the Geekscape radar. Last time he was on Geekscape he was promoting his follow up “Fated”. Now, Scott has a crime novel called “Lucky Bastard” that should peak every single one of your interests. Scott reads the first chapter from the book, talks about his favorite crime novelists and gives advice to any aspiring writers out there! Also, we actually talk basketball a bit! Scott’s a pretty awesome writer and a funny guy (on top of being a fantastic conversationalist and a gentleman). But you’re about to find that out… GEEKSCAPE!

Earlier today I received the following press release about the just announced 10th Season of Rooster Teeth’s beloved Red VS Blue. The new season features voice acting from Elijah Wood and will be the conclusion to the Project Freelancer storyline that’s been running through the series recently. Here’s the announcement trailer, followed by the original press release!

Rooster Teeth Productions is thrilled to announce their award-winning web series, Red vs. Blue, will return for its 10th season, featuring the voice of Elijah Wood (Lord Of The Rings Trilogy).  The season will premiere exclusively on the Rooster Teeth website on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28th.   Following the premiere of each episode they will be added to the Rooster Teeth YouTube page, which recently passed the 1 billion views mark!

Co-directed by Burnie Burns and Matt Hullum, Red vs. Blue humorously chronicles a civil war being waged by two equally hapless armies.  The Red Team and the Blue Team are fighting a battle that they know very little about and have no clue how to win.  This truly original narrative is told using machinima from the Xbox® game Halo® and stunning CGI animation.  The result of this innovative combination is the hilarious story of a non-committal struggle to control the least desirable place in the universe.

The 10th season of Red vs. Blue will bring the conclusion of the Project Freelancer story line and welcome new members of the team.  Elijah Wood (Lord Of The Rings Trilogy) joins the cast of Red vs. Blue this season as the voice of the artificial intelligence program, “Sigma.”

“After meeting the folks at Rooster Teeth a couple years ago, I was pleased to be asked to provide a voice for Red vs Blue. The character of Sigma, shifty and deceptive, was fun to bring to life,” said Elijah Wood (Lord Of The Rings Trilogy).

New episodes of Red vs. Blue season 10 will premiere exclusively on RoosterTeeth.com each Monday.  Older episodes will be available on the Rooster Teeth YouTube Channel.  Red vs. Blue is also available for purchase or rental on iTunes and the Xbox Zune marketplace and will be available on Hulu this summer.  DVDs are available at Best Buy and other major retailers. Special mini-series are released on the Xbox Halo Waypoint Channel.

The Rooster Teeth YouTube Channel, which has over 1.7 Million subscribers, is home to Red vs. Blue episodes along with several other Rooster Teeth series.  These include RT Animated Adventures, which follows the shenanigans of the Rooster Teeth staff in animation, Fails of the Weak, a weekly compilation of the best in video game mishaps, and a wide variety of live-action comedy videos, behind-the-scenes clips, and video game tutorials.  As of April 16th the YouTube channel reached, and surpassed, 1 billion total views.

“Hitting one billion views was a confusing moment for us. We had heard the number ‘one billion’ before in conversation, but we didn’t think it actually existed. As everyone knows, the highest number ever recorded by modern scientists is four million. We here at Rooster Teeth are proud to have shattered that record. We look forward to many years of driving the twin industries of online video and number science,” said Rooster Teeth Founder Burnie Burns.

For the latest developments on Rooster Teeth and Red vs. Blue visit the Rooster Teeth Facebook, Rooster Teeth Twitter and Red vs. Blue Facebook.

About Red Vs. Blue Season 10

Project Freelancer casts a mighty long shadow. In nine seasons of Red vs. Blue, the top-secret military operation has affected the lives of the Blood Gulch crew in more ways than they even know. Now in the climactic tenth season, we experience the conclusion of the Project Freelancer story by watching how it all began and how it all went wrong.  Witness the birth of series villains and heroes, betrayals and alliances, all while the Reds and Blues embark on a hunt for answers from the one man that started it all – with a few diversions along the way of course.

Red vs. Blue Season 10 is the gripping and hilarious finale to the Project Freelancer saga, complete with newly animated battle sequences, a quest for revenge, and last but not least – your favorite inept space marines. Set in the universe of the enormously popular video game franchise Halo®, Red vs. Blue combines innovative machinima and animated sequences that have made it the world’s longest running web series of all time.

Yeah. I paid to see “GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra”. I think a lot of us did. And we paid dearly. Can we ever be redeemed?

Well, if this new trailer posted by our friends at Machinima is any indication, the answer is yes. The plot is already better, with Zartan replacing the President of the United States and ordering the destruction of the Joes and implementation of Cobra as the lead national security force. Oh, and you also get The Rock and Bruce Willis raising eyebrows at each other a few times. Pretty romantic.

All in all, this is looking a lot more like “G.I. Joe: Redemption” than “Retaliation” but we’ll take it! Hell, we’ll take anything after that last mess…

As reported by Variety, Guy Pearce is in final talks to play geneticist Aldrich Killian in Shane Black’s “Iron Man 3”. Why not make a giant move like this after last week’s “Lockout” landed with a thud. Things aren’t all bad for Pearce though. He’s in Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus” coming out on June 8th.

The good news revealed in the article is that the third movie will be based largely on Warren Ellis’ “Extremis” storyline from a few years ago.

As reported by Variety:

Shane Black is helming the film, that brings back Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and Iron Man, along with Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and Scarlett Johansson also set to return to the franchise. Ben Kingsley is set to play the villain.

Plot will borrow elements from Warren Ellis’ six-issue “Iron Man: Extremis” comicbooks, that also heavily influenced the first “Iron Man” pic, and focuses heavily on the spread of a virus through nanotechnology.

In the books, Killian co-created the Extremis technology that Iron Man adopts after Killian sells it to terrorists.

Production on the film begins in May, with lensing to take place around North Carolina.

Disney has skedded “Iron Man 3” for May 3, 2013.
