In news that will surely bum out fans of Rocksteady’s ‘Arkham Asylum’ and ‘Arkham City’ games, longtime Batman writer Paul Dini (Batman: The Animated Series), is not returning to script Rocksteady Studios’ follow up. On Dini’s twitter, he expresses ‘Kinda hoped I’d be doing another Arkham game in London during the Olympics. Esp, as I had a good source for tx. Ah, well’. Although I wasn’t able to find the tweet myself, The Sixth Axis has the story for you.

I did see this follow up tweet that further implies that Dini would love to return.

Meanwhile, Rocksteady is rumored to be developing a Justice League game set in the 1950’s Silver Age of comics.

Thoughts? Personally, I thought the story and dialogue for the first two Arkham games were fantastic and really raised the bar for comic book video game writing. Can Rocksteady make a solid game without Dini’s involvement?

A few days ago, I posted this piece on rumors that Peter Jackson and Warner Bros. were talking about the possibility of splitting Jackson’s 2-part ‘Hobbit’ movie into 3 films. At the time, I wrote that it’s a good idea. I still feel that way.

And the universe (or at least Peter Jackson and Warner Bro.) agrees with me, as today Deadline is reporting that it’s a done deal and that the 2-part ‘Hobbit’ will now be split into 3 films, the last to be released Summer 2014.

I’m all for it, and I’ll add even more reason. Jackson is using 125 pages of Tolkien’s notes about the planned re-writing of ‘The Hobbit’ that Tolkien intended to undergo in the hopes of making it work better alongside the ‘LOTR’ books. I know that a few of you are bemoaning that “it’s a children’s book!” or “aaagh! Return of the King had 15 million endings”… but I argue this:

The Powers That Be (in this case Warner Bros.) are going to make products based on this material whether we like it or not. If not ‘The Hobbit’ film than a ‘Hobbit’ videogame or comics or whatever (they’re still going to do that anyways). They’re going to push their rights as much as they can into the ancillary material and turn that into product (as they might be doing with the ‘Hobbit’ trilogy already in bringing in elements that were part of Tolkien’s  bigger picture but just weren’t in the original book’s pages).

Here’s what Jackson posted in his announcement today on Facebook:

“We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance. The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.”

Jackson continued:

“So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.”

I’m of the opinion that this all happens under Peter Jackson’s guidance rather than the unknown ‘whoever comes next’. Really, make a list of filmmakers who could accomplish this task nearly as well as Peter Jackson and as loyally and appropriately? Sam Raimi? Guillermo Del Toro? I think I just exhausted your list. Now, do either of these guys have WETA at their disposal without Jackson’s involvement?

No. The Tolkien properties are going to be brought to the screen. At least Jackson insures that they’re done right. And give me 15 million endings (because I don’t really want this stuff to end).

Let’s get some reviews going! I watch “Ruby Sparks” and say ‘forget writing up a girl… let’s write up a different ending’! X-Men First Class sequel gets a fantastic name! Geekscape casts the Fantastic Four reboot for Fox! FX refuses to give up on “Powers”! I definitely give up on the 3DS title “Planet Crashers” but it leads me back into the arms of the original Zelda! Oh sweet, sweet adventurous, exploring original Zelda arms!

According to this story at The Hollywood Reporter, tipped off to me by Ian Kerner, it appears that Peter Jackson is involved in deep discussions with Warner Brothers about expanding his two part adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” into a film trilogy.

Jackson teased the idea at Comic-Con on July 14, telling fans that he wants to shoot more footage. But since then, sources say that studio Warner Bros., Jackson, producer Fran Walsh and writer-producer Philippa Boyens began exploring the logistics of what it would take to make another movie. Those talks are said to have accelerated in recent days, with the studio on board if the right financial arrangements can be achieved. That includes securing new actor deals for the expansive cast as well as shoring up certain rights associated with the property (The Hobbit has a long a tortured rights history.)

While I was weary at first about stretching two films into three, it seems from the above blurb like the expansion would require additional shooting to smooth things out and in order adapt a hundred pages of material that JRR Tolkien had originally planned on using to rewrite/update ‘The Hobbit’ after his completion of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ books. Tolkien obviously never got the chance but his notes were included in a recent edition of his books and give us a fascinating look at a legendary storyteller.

The Hobbit is my favorite book on earth. I remember my father giving it to me shortly after my parent’s got divorced. A few days later, I left with my mom and brothers on a trip to Guadalajara to visit family and sat in the backseat reading the book once on the way down and again on the way back. I would look out the windows and imagine I was going on the same journey alongside Bilbo, Gandalf and his band of dwarven adventurers. As a 10 year old kid readjusting my view and place in the world, I needed that book. I don’t think I’ve ever needed a book like I needed that book then. It opened the door to fantasy and sci-fi and the later existence of this site, etc.

I trust that Peter Jackson knows what he’s doing. Since the night that I saw ‘Meet the Feebles’ and ‘Brain Dead’ at the Dobie theater in Austin, he’s been a filmmaker that I’ve trusted to deliver a fully engrossing experience. Three Peter Jackson ‘Hobbit’ films are better than two… and the inclusion of JRR Tolkien’s own notes on the updating of ‘The Hobbit’ from children’s book to something on par with ‘The Lord of the Rings’ both tonally and structurally, while putting it in the greater context of Middle Earth, is something I’m looking forward to seeing. He is using Tolkien as his guide, not just making things up to sell a third movie for profit. Jackson is making something that can fit appropriately alongside his ‘Rings’ trilogy and not feel like an addendum.

We’ll see what happens, but this is promising news for fans of the books and Peter Jackson.

When I first started Geekscape in December of 2006, one of the first decisions I made was to apply for a San Diego Comic-Con booth. At the time, all applications sat at the end of a potential 4 year wait-list, but I knew that Geekscape was something that I wanted to create that would stand the test of time and that I could afford to be patient as it grew. In the Summer of 2010, Geekscape had its first booth on the SDCC floor. At the time, the wait-list was rumored to be 7 years and today, as Geekscape looks back on its 3rd year on the SDCC floor, the wait supposedly sits at 10. I haven’t always made the best decisions with this brand, but applying for real estate on the floor of the fan biggest convention in North America has easily been one of them.

And this year was our best year yet, both in terms of exposure, excitement and even sales. In fact, I was happy to discover that by 10am on Thursday, the morning of the first full day, we had sold more Geekscape t-shirts than during all four full days of last year’s SDCC. All weekend, while Scott Almaniana, Shawn Madden and the Geekscape press corps ran around bringing you fantastic Con coverage, Shane O’Hare and I weathered the constant barrage of visitors, fans and signings at the Geekscape booth. This summer, more than those past, the evidence was undeniable:  Geekscape is bigger and better than it ever has been. And I feel as though we’re just now really getting started. Thank the Old Gods that I’m patient, right?

The reasons for this surge in popularity are several, some planned, some not. First off, our site is finally something that can fully engage and keep an audience. With Shawn Madden and company keeping a steady stream of content on the site since our March relaunch, our numbers have steadily grown. At the time, we were the Top 260,000th site on web, with an average 30k pageview/month count. It was quite the sad state of affairs. In less than 6 months, we’re now on the verge of cracking into the Top 100,000 sites on the web with an average pageview/month of over 200k. We still have a ways to go, but there’s no denying that our mantra of consistency and quality is starting to show results. Add to this the brand new ScapePods, both regular and hopefully quality, and we’re really cooking with gas. In fact, I’ll soon be announcing some more audio podcasts to add to our slate of shows as I move my focus from the written content, now in solid hands, to the podcasts. They were our very start and I think that we can do more to get them out there to the audience that they all deserve… even The Saint Mort Show. Look for tweaks on the site in the coming months to help up the quality in what we do around here.

The FP‘s JTro and X-Men: First Class‘s Lucas Till drop by to say “what’s up” to Geekscape!

Another thing that’s helped us get our name out is our increase in friends. Geekscape was built as a resource for all like-minded geek creatives, and having folks like Doug Jones, Marc Zicree, Charlie Adard, Brea & Zane Grant and many others start to use it as a way to get the word out and share in our excitement is really rewarding. Their fans become excited about Geekscape. Geekscape fans become excited about their projects. And everyone wins. On Thursday, as my voice first started to fail (and I still had both our Comikaze/Stan Lee party and the Comics on Comics panel to go), Geekscape friends Jason Trost from The FP and Lucas Till from X-Men: First Class dropped by to talk to me about their upcoming project “Wet and Reckless“. I don’t have much news for you yet, but you know that as soon as I can share, you’ll see it shared on Geekscape! Across the board, creators like Mega 64, Jon Schnepp, Iain McCaig and more were excited for the first time to see what Geekscape had in the works (and there’s a lot).

On Friday, voice recovered as much as possible, The People VS George Lucas director Alexandre Philippe dropped by to deliver me a rare Japanese version of the film’s blu-ray (there is no US blu-ray).

In addition, we did an interview for our new Geekscape co-produced film Doc of the Dead with Fanboy Comix and held a fundraising poster signing with The Walking Dead artist Charlie Adlard (in an hour we raised $1,000).

I was also finally able to begin recording some GeekscapePods to send to you fine folks. My intent was always to record more throughout the weekend, but the fact is that between keeping the booth running, helping the autograph signings and maintaining everything else, I definitely overestimated my ability to record. I did get Charlie Adlard, FX legend Iaian McCaig, MMA fighter Nate Quarry (who dropped by and surprised me as I was closing up shop Friday night) and Sean Becker and Teal Sherer to record some things for you. In the end though, not recording more content for you guys is something that I regret and next year I hope to have both Shane O’Hare and Matt Kelly there to give me a chance to get you some more pods! I would also like to record some more pieces from Geekscapists walking the floor and sharing their experiences. So I’ll plan accordingly and here’s to next year (because we did already pay for next year so start making plans to be there)!

“More podcasts next year!”

The final positive of this year are all of the new friends that we made. I had a tough time leaving the booth and only managed to do so for about 10 minutes a day to walk the floor (although I did manage lunch on two days which I thank Shane O’Hare so much for allowing me to do)! In that time, I went and bought a Zomb for Laura and got to see Geekscape friends like Kevin Eastman and Daniel Corey at their respective booths. I also had a slew of new friends come to the booth like our booth neighbor Maddox, pro-wrestler John Morrison (who will be on an episode of Geekscape very soon) and convention wild-man Keith Apicary (who did not get kicked out!).

So that was our year at San Diego Comic Con from my perspective and some hints of what’s to come. Super Action Man made an appearance on the final day to scare some visitors (into loving him) and scripts for the next Geekscape project after Doc of the Dead went to a few folks in the know in order to get the ball rolling for next year. It’s an incredibly exciting time for Geekscape and things are only going to get better. San Diego Comic Con is always a benchmark for how far we’ve come over the years and a few days removed from this year’s experience, I find myself both amazed and grateful for how far we have come together in the years since I ordered booth space back in December 2006. Thank you all so much for being a part of it and just you wait to see what’s next!

If you’ve been listening to Geekscape, or even checking our Facebook or Twitter, you knew something was up. And now it’s official. Geekscape is teaming up with Red Letter Media and “The People VS George Lucas” team of Exhibit A Pictures to create THE definitive zombie culture documentary “The Doc of the Dead”. Geekscape and Red Letter Media’s roles in the film are as contributors and Mike of Red Letter Media and I are co-directors providing director Alexandre Philippe, who’s no stranger to Geekscapists, with plenty of segments throughout the film.

I could explain more but why not check out the press release for yourself:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ‘THE PEOPLE VS GEORGE LUCAS’ TEAM ANNOUNCES DEFINITIVE ZOMBIE DOCUMENTARY

‘WALKING DEAD’ ARTIST CHARLIE ADLARD TO SIGN POSTER ART AT SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON

DENVER, CO (July 5, 2012) – The creators of the groundbreaking participatory documentary THE PEOPLE vs. GEORGE LUCAS are already hard at work on DOC OF THE DEAD—the definitive and most comprehensive tribute to zombie culture and fandom ever made. Shot and edited in a cinematically edgy, high-octane style, DOC OF THE DEAD will host a rich pop culture dialogue with zombie experts and celebrities, seek participation from YouTubers and indie filmmakers, and even investigate the possibility and ramifications of an actual zombie outbreak with sociologists, virologists, chemists, and members of the Zombie Research Society.

The Exhibit A Pictures triumvirate—Writer/Director Alexandre O. Philippe, Producer Kerry Deignan Roy, and Producer/DP Robert Muratore—teams up again with Editor Chad Herschberger and the multi award-winning post-production facility Milkhaus (Oscar winner SAVING FACE; Sundance winner CHASING ICE) to stamp their unique brand of entertainment and pop culture commentary on one of the most viral and enduring fan phenomena in recent history. This will also mark their first full-fledged collaboration with Geekscape’s own Jonathan London and Red Letter Media’s massively popular Mr. Plinkett—both of whom will contribute recurring, fictionalized segments to the film. In other words: expect plenty of fan service and gory surprises!

Artist Charlie Adlard (THE WALKING DEAD), who created a stunning original poster for the film, will autograph a number of San Diego Comic-Con exclusive limited edition prints at the Geekscape Booth #3919 on Friday, July 13, 2012 at 4:30pm.

Filming is already under way, and the Exhibit A team is currently focusing on key interviews with countless personalities, critics, scholars, writers, filmmakers, comedians, and notorious zombie culture enthusiasts. Notables (to date) include Simon Pegg (SHAUN OF THE DEAD), and Matt Mogk (ZOMBIE RESEARCH SOCIETY). Zombie icon George A. Romero has agreed to participate, and will be interviewed in Toronto in early August.

Principal photography for DOC OF THE DEAD will begin in the Fall of 2012, with key interviews/B-roll/fictionalized segments filmed by the Exhibit A crew, and additional segments concurrently produced by Geekscape and Red Letter Media. Post-production is anticipated to begin in the Spring of 2013, with a completed film ready for delivery by Fall 2013. Crowdsourcing will be ongoing during the production and post-production periods. DOC OF THE DEAD will premiere in 2014.

I’m pretty excited about the chance for Geekscape to be involved in support of their first feature film and am really happy to be working with Mike at Red Letter Media and our longtime friends at Exhibit A. This was part of the goal in establishing the brand back in 2006 and continues to be. I hope those of you at SDCC next week drop by the booth and check things out, and pick up a copy of Charlie’s signed poster. Proceeds from the sale of the limited numbered poster will go to charity.

And now here’s a photo of my beloved wife, done up for her first onscreen role, and Simon on the Doc of the Dead set (ie. our living room where I record Geekscape):

Any questions? Keep checking this space for updates as we move towards film screens in 2014!

Back in late April, I brought you my review of the first chapter in Telltale Games’ entry into The Walking Dead universe, an episodic adventure game that takes place alongside the storyline from the original Image comic books. At the time, I said some pretty bold things and if you haven’t played the game or read the review, I implore you to do so before you continue reading here. It’ll help to familiarize you with the game’s setting, gameplay and mechanics, all of which I said were incredible. I even went so far as to say that Telltale’s iteration of The Walking Dead is THE BEST iteration that is out.

And having played through the second episode, entitled “Starved For Help”, I can only say that it got even better. The choices that the game asks you to make become more stressful, the world in which the story takes place gets bleaker and the responsibilities that your main character takes on become greater as Lee begins to inherit his role as the leader of the group of survivors. The Walking Dead videogame really does the best job of putting you in the shoes of a zombie apocalypse survivor in a way that the comic book and the TV show can’t and Telltale has used this second chapter to move beyond the introductory phase of the first and ratchet things up a few notches.

The episode begins 3 months after the ending of the first, in which the survivors have made a well-guarded camp for themselves out of an abandoned motel. The problem that they now find themselves in though is a dwindling food supply. During a hunting trip through the nearby woods, Lee and his new companion (who’s name I forgot because his character is new and doesn’t make much of an impression beyond being potentially expendable) come across some new survivors, one who has his leg stuck in a bear trap. As the undead begin to close in, Lee must figure out how to either get the trap open or use his axe to make one of the most hardcore decisions the game will force you to make. The fact that the scene plays out in a timed quicktime event really adds the stress and makes you feel directly responsible for the choice you must make in trying to save everyone’s lives.

This guy is new… and he’s lame. And he shouldn’t get too comfortable with that gun.

Upon returning to camp, the game doesn’t make things any easier when you’re tasked with choosing who among the group (of about 10 survivors) gets 4 remaining food items. Again, as I said in reviewing the first episode, the choices that you make not only effect the other characters, they are permanent and are carried through to the other chapters. If you choose to give food to one character, another might feel slighted and not come to your aid later on, while choosing wisely might earn you the respect of someone else. The problem is, in Episode 2, there never seems to be a right answer. You will always end up pissing someone off.

The clearest case of this is in the dynamic between Kenny, whose son Duck you may or may not have saved in the first episode, and Lilly, whose father knows about your questionable past and rides your ass like nobody’s business. Both Kenny and Lilly step up to make opposing decisions for the group and you are quickly forced to try and play peacemaker while the game asks you to take sides. Regardless of your choices, it’s almost impossible for your relationship with Kenny to come out unscathed and your never sure if the choice you made or the dialogue option you chose was the right one (hint: there will never be 100% right answers and you are pretty much screwed no matter what you do). And as the episode progresses, the rift between Lilly and Kenny only gets greater and leads to one of the biggest “holy shit” moments of the episode. I’m serious. I literally yelled it out loud.

This dairy farm should offer some safety… right?

The writing and design of this game have to be continually commended. As the episode progresses, and the group is led by two brothers to a nearby dairy farm, everything in the game seems to escalate. The omnipresent sense of paranoia and fear that began the episode soon give way to downright panic as the entire safety of the group is threatened by new surroundings. Each character has a unique voice and opinion and the story takes a ton of unexpected twists and turns. There is more action, character and consequence packed into a single two hour episode of this game than there is in an entire season of the AMC show or storyline of the comic book and that’s a feat in and of itself. And it isn’t shy from going to places that are much darker than either the TV show or the comic have ever explored.

This dinner scene is the best scene in the episode… maybe.

And beyond being an engrossing, dynamic experience, this game is just fun to play. The adventure game mechanics are well designed, the quicktime events are appropriately stressful and the choices you are forced to make are each pretty challenging. And there’s a lot of blood. Way more so than in Episode 1, as the larger world of The Walking Dead is explored in this second episode, the horrors that accompany it begin to come into full view. We get our first real glimpse of human survivors beyond our group and just how desperate they’ve become since the onset of the zombie outbreak. And things do not look good. There are some seriously gross, intense and horrific moments in this episode but never did they seem forced or inappropriate to the story or the characters.

What Telltale is doing here is really building upon the world that The Walking Dead comics have established and then improving on it a few times over. If you’re a zombie fan, a Walking Dead fan or just a fan of adventure gaming in general, you owe it to yourself to just get the $19.99 Season Pass and enjoy each episode as it comes out. My wife, who watches and helps me navigate the game’s choices as I play,  and I have been enjoying the heck out of these new, enhanced Walking Dead experiences and I can neither recommend them enough or wait for the third episode to be released.

This game scores a clear 5/5.

I was sitting in a busy restaurant this evening when I read on my phone that Nora Ephron had passed away after her battle with Leukemia. Nora Ephron may not have been the type of storyteller that you’d immediately equate with Geekscape, but there’s a connection, and if you’d been sitting in that restaurant you would have seen the wind getting knocked out of me.

Nora’s brother in law Jerry Kass, the husband to her sister Delia, was my screenwriting mentor at Columbia and remains a close friend. I’ve always had bouts of confidence. I still think that I write painfully slow. But I wouldn’t be writing at all if it wasn’t for Jerry’s motivation. I definitely wouldn’t be telling stories in the same way. Jerry is funny, inspiring and is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. Even years after graduation, he never hesitates to read something I’ve written and give notes or take me to lunch at Knickerbockers whenever I’m in New York (an offer that I’ve never missed out on). Over a hamburger, Jerry and I would talk about my stories, my projects like Geekscape and what he, his wife Delia and Nora were working on. Sometimes they were screenplays, sometimes they were short stories and sometimes they were plays. They are always inspiring, and I always leave those lunches thinking “I have to write more… and faster… if only so Jerry can read it”.

Through Jerry, I met Nora’s son Max, a professional musician who’s about my age. When Max and I talk, it’s always about music, videos and working together. Max has the same creative fire that I hear in Jerry over lunch. It makes you want to pick up a guitar and just belt out a few songs… even if I don’t know how. Storytelling is that strong in the family. The direction is never as important as just taking the steps to get there and seeing what happens. It’s humbling.

Jerry’s son Adam is a talented artist (are you starting to get annoyed by the level of talent in this family?). Adam did the storyboards for my short Gay by Dawn and helped me with the end credits and digital pieces of the film. We bonded over Dungeons and Dragons, filmmaking and sci-fi. Geeks have an immediate short hand, and Adam and I are no exclusion to the rule. In fall of 2003, we spent more than a few nights at a Hollywood Denny’s planning out shots and working our way through different movie ideas. It’s crazy to me that it’s been almost a decade since we took turns trying to make each other laugh while the waitresses grew tired of bringing us refills.

I never met Nora Ephron. Her storytelling and filmmaking career, with titles like Silkwood, Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry Met Sally, speaks for itself professionally but is probably insufficient in describing the woman that she was to those around her. But I’m grateful for the immense influence that she played in these 3 people who have influenced me and helped me to this point. My thoughts are with Jerry, Max and Adam tonight. As I wrote Jerry earlier tonight, I’ll never be able repay him for the inspiration, kindness and guidance that he’s given me (or the countless lunches). I just hope that these words bring him some comfort. I wouldn’t be who I am without him. And these three individuals wouldn’t be who they are without Nora Ephron.

Goodbye, and thanks for the wonderful stories (and family).

Nintendo is a sensitive company, some say the heart of the video game industry. That’s pretty apparent when you factor in that they obviously scheduled their North American Nintendo Direct press conference for midnight EST tonight to steer clear of all those hardcore Nintendo fans who were also watching Game 5 of the NBA Finals… RIGHT?!? Well, that one didn’t go into overtime… or even into a Game 6. Regardless, I’m STILL going to provide a little “postgame” as I address the positives and negatives of Nintendo’s presser.

If you want to watch the entire Nintendo Direct press conference for yourself, here it is:

– Let’s start with the “Who Gives a Damn?”

The new Nintendo 3DS XL will be released on August 19th for $199.99

It comes with a new 4.88 inch top screen (up from 3.5 inches) and a bottom screen of 4.18 inches (from the original 3). Let me tell you why I don’t care.

Because if you’re the kind of Nintendo nerd like me who watches an online streaming press conference… you already own a 3DS and you have for a year (or at least since the “games” came out in November). On top of that, the idea of a bigger 3DS really defeats the point of a portable system. I look at the kids playing their Nintendo DS XLs at our local meet-ups (yeah, I go to 3DS meet-ups… fuck you) and they look like they’re playing Angry Birds on an iPad. I don’t want a bigger 3DS. I’m not 90 years old. A 3DS XL is the equivalent of those enormous remote controls they sell to old people at Bed Bath and Beyond. No. Gracias.

The biggest missed opportunity here is that they didn’t take the time to add a second analog pad (ie. what the hardcore Nintendo gamers wanted). Whoops!

Namco Bandai is teaming with Project Sora for a new Smash Bros. game

This game will be for the 3DS and WiiU. And you’ll probably get to beat the crap out of PacMan. I’ll say it right now. I don’t like the Smash Bros. games. I could care less. I’m sorry. But I’m not a 16 year old Asian kid playing in a sweaty tournament in the basement of a Motel 6 out off the 60 freeway. If you kids want to watch a bunch of button mashing ridiculousness while yelling at each other about how close that last save was (umm… there are a LOT of saves in these games) then knock yourself out. No. Actually knock yourself out… with a human fist. Then you’d actually feel something for once.

Let’s be clear: Fighting games are for gamers who were too afraid to play contact sports. First Person Shooters are for gamers who at one time tried contact sports but were embarrassingly awful at them.

The New Super Mario Bros. 2 3DS game available August 19th will have paid DLC

Nintendo drew a line on DLC… but it looks like that line is starting to bend towards breaking. The new Fire Emblem game will supposedly have some DLC as well. Not cool, Nintendo. New Super Mario Bros. 2 is already looking like a thinner version of the original with the Golden Shower Coin Grab Mode a not that fun attempt to add Street Pass features to the game. That WILL get old fast. Please prove me wrong and make this game as substantial as the original DS title. But something about the sound of “future DLC” and “day and date downloadable and retail title” have me worried.

And no DLC on games like Mario Kart!?! I know. You’re sick of me bitching on Geekscape about wanting downloadable tracks for Mario Kart. It HAS to happen one day. It HAS to.

New Pokemon Stuff

Sorry, Pokemon fans. I got to this part of the press conference, my wife entered the room and realized what I was watching and I felt like a complete loser. I turned it off because I couldn’t care less about the Pokemons. I know that at one time I had TWO Mewtwos and was the elite trainer on my block (and easily the oldest) but that was 13 years ago. That ship has sailed for me and you’d already cost me any chance of having sex tonight. I had to bail.

By the way. Huge surprise. There’ll be new Pokemon stuff.

– Okay. So what was The Good?!?

Animal Crossing 3DS is coming and it will have Streetpass

Great. A bunch of strangers can visit my town and threaten to chop down all my trees via Streetpass. I’m cool with it. There’ll also be tarot card readings. I knew that this game (especially Tom Nook) was evil and Satanic but now it’s starting to all come to light. I skipped City Folk on the Wii but sign me up for this one. You had me at Streetpass. And Satanism.

Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance has a demo NOW on the eShop

I still want to call this game Kingdom Hearts: Egg Drop Soup. In any event, it’s coming and it’s coming soon. You can wet your appetites already. Say what I will about Nintendo and their eShop but these demos have been great and they’ve been treating them in a fantastic way. Keep them coming.

Professor Layton is finally coming to your 3DS

Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle was a Japanese 3DS launch title. So why haven’t we seen it in the States yet? Has localization really taken this long? Whatever the puzzle may be, I’m glad it’s finally solved. We’ll be seeing this game in November (news to which my wife responded with “Merry Christmas!”). I’m already giving thanks.

New Titles Coming to the 3DS Virtual Console

The big ones are that Legend of Zelda is coming July 5th for Non-Ambassadors (jerks… I’ve been playing it for months!) and that Super Mario Land will have a price drop to $2.99 through the end of June. Also, new games will be arriving once a week this summer, including Kid Icarus: Of Myths, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, Sonic Blast and Sonic Labyrinth (which 5 people played).

– Now for The Inexcusable

STILL NO WORD ON A 3DS SPECIFIC ZELDA TITLE! COME ON!!!!

WTF. It didn’t happen at E3. It didn’t happen tonight (which we could have guessed). But this is something that Nintendo has been hinting at for months. We loved the 3DS port of Ocarina of Time (it’s easily the best version of the game) but that’s a game that’s 13 years old now. I know that it wasn’t a Nintendo 64 launch title and we had to wait a while for that too but does the 3DS have that kind of time? Do portables have the same lifespans as consoles? This is something that has to have a 2013 release date on it or it runs the risk of becoming yesterday’s news (especially if the WiiU sports a console Zelda title).

Skyward Sword was a complete fetch quest of a game. It’s really one of the worst of the series and I’d only list it as playable for it’s motion controls, final dungeon and final fight scene. A 3DS port of Majora’s Mask would only stop the bleeding for a month or two. A new interpretation of Link to the Past would be interesting. But really, what any Zelda and 3DS fan wants is a true 3DS designed Zelda game. And not something like Spirit Tracks or the other DS title. Those were fun but got buried in their own backtracking (although using the Wind Waker art direction was great). Give us something that uses the system properly, 3DS, Streetpass, camera and all. We’re waiting, Nintendo. Make it happen. The clock on this system started ticking when you announced the 3DS XL.

Geekscape writers Scott Alminiana and Shawn Madden join me on this Geekscapepod to talk through a few things! Green Lantern and Nightwing are going gay in Justice League XXX 3D! Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is NOT cancelled… we think! Shawn recommends the Netflix Instant indie “Boy Wonder”! Play as Stan Lee in new Amazing Spider-Man preorder DLC! Monster University gets a trailer! More info on Geekscape at SDCC! And we say how much we love Geekscapist Xan!
