I’m just going to say it off the top: Jake Busey is really, really awesome. We welcome Jake onto Geekscape to talk about his new action comedy horror rock film ‘Dead Ant’ and talk a lot about classics like ‘The Frighteners’ and ‘Starship Troopers’ along the way. We also discuss growing up in a music family with his father Gary and his friends and Jake’s only early career as a musician and how growing up changed all that. Jake gives us some hints about his role in the new Predator film and gives a touching remembrance to both Bill Paxton and Tom Petty. Really, I found Jake to be a very smart, kinda and well spoken guy and loved having him on the show! Enjoy!

Funny that on the same day we get some rather important news about the next Star Wars film, we also get the trailer for — AT LAST — the final installment in the seemingly never-ending film series of The Hobbit. Behold, for your viewing pleasure: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies(The trailer, that is.)

As much as I tried to like The Hobbit films, I can’t. They’re an ugly mess. At least the equally messy X-Men movies have ounces of fun in them. But here it is at last. The last movie in what shouldn’t have been a trilogy in the first place. We’re almost done!

Side note: Only The Hobbit movies could get away with releasing a trailer just a little over a month before it actually hits theaters. This is a gigantic movie, a CGI fantasy onslaught with a $250 million budget, and only now we get the trailer? I get that they announced the films would be released consecutively so we probably should have penciled in these dates years ago, but still.

Will you be seeing this movie when it theaters? Of course you are, and you’ll hate yourself for it. But comment below!

Obviously we’ve been big fans of Sean Astin for years. Goonies, Rudy, TMNT, The Lord of the Rings and now The Strain have made us all lifelong fans. But there’s a lot about Sean that you may not know, like how active he is in politics and that he’s an avid runner. Well, you’re going to know all that now as he guests on the show and tells us about his conflicted character on The Strain, stepping barefoot into Middle Earth, being involved in politics and his talk show Vox Populi and whether or not he can keep pace with me as a distance runner (he can)! I think you’ll find him to be everything you expected: a smart, thoughtful guy who is passionate about everything he does. I loved having him on the show!

Briefly: We’ve been huge fans of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit films thus far, and Jackson has just revealed that the third film in the trilogy, originally titled The Hobbit: There and Back Again, has just been retitled.

Here’s the explanation:

Inside Information…

Our journey to make The Hobbit Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo’s own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we’ve gone along. “There and Back Again” felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived “there” in the “Desolation of Smaug”.

When we did the premiere trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title. We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate.

And so: “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” it is.

As Professor Tolkien intended, “There and Back Again” encompasses Bilbo’s entire adventure, so don’t be surprised if you see it used on a future box-set of all three movies.

Before then however, we have a film to finish, and much to share with you. It’s been a nice quiet time for us—Jabez and I happily editing away in a dark cave in Wellington—but those halcyon days are quickly coming to an end. It will soon be time to step into the light. Expect to see and hear much about The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in the coming months.

And there’s also The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Cut, which we’re in the process of finishing, with over 25 mins of new scenes, all scored with original music composed by Howard Shore.

It’ll be a fun year!

Makes sense, doesn’t it? Are you looking forward to the trilogy’s completion? The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies hits theatres on December 17th!

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Looks like Guillermo Del Toro and Peter Jackson didn’t give up on the idea of working together after Guillermo left behind the directing duties on The Hobbit!

Today, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros announced that both Jackson and Del Toro would team up for what the pair are calling “their dream project”: ‘King Kong VS Godzilla’! Legendary Pictures, the production company behind this summer’s Godzilla and last summer’s Del Toro helmed Kaiju epic Pacific Rim, will produce the joint effort for both the studios and the creatives.

As you’ll remember, Legendary is now on the Universal lot, owners of King Kong, who put out Peter Jackson’s 2005 Kong remake. The production company was formerly on the Warner Bros lot, the company that released Pacific Rim and this summer’s Gareth Edwards directed Godzilla reboot.

Obviously, a movie the size of King Kong VS Godzilla may just need two studios to bring it to the screen. Warner Bros is no stranger to this, having partnered with MGM on Peter Jackson’s current Hobbit trilogy, and dual studio productions seem to be becoming the norm in this tent-pole driven day and age.

The only question now is… who will direct and who will produce? Or is there room in the director’s chair for both of these cinematic titans?

King Kong VS Godzilla is scheduled for a November 2016 release.

Every time Ian Kerner guests on a new Geekscape episode, it’s like a major event… just like the release of ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’! Ian and I sit down, break down Peter Jackson’s second film in The Hobbit trilogy and how it just feels good to be back among old (and new friends) in Middle Earth! Spoilers abound, obviously, as we get right to the thick of it, just like journeying into the wilds of Mirkwood! Also, we get Ian’s take on Sony’s announcement of ‘Venom’ and ‘Sinister Six’ films and we also talk about the Wachowski’s ‘Jupiter Ascending’ and Tom Cruise in ‘Edge of Tomorrow’!

Headed to SDCC this year and planning to see an awesome panel for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug? Too bad… there won’t be one. Director Peter Jackson has just released a new production diary for the film, and it began with some seriously somber news: everyone involved with the picture is simply too busy to attend.

The diary continues, and is pretty much exactly what you’d expect: an awesome behind-the-scenes look at The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. This of course doesn’t make up for the fact that they won’t be at SDCC, but hey, you only have to wait five more months for the feature to release.

Watch the new production diary below, and let us know if you’re disappointed! The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theatres on December 13th!

Just two days ago we showed you the fantastic first poster for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Now, it’s trailer time.

We’re just six months away from this second chapter’s release into theatres, and I couldn’t be more excited. I thought that the first film was a fantastically fun, beautiful trip back to Middle Earth, and it’ll be an absolute pleasure to jump back into this world.

The Desolation of Smaug teaser is a great first look at the film, and also give’s us a peek at the film’s titular character, Smaug. Don’t take my word for it, watch the trailer below, and let us know what you think! The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theatres on December 13th!

Were you a fan of the first film? Will you be seeing this one in 48FPS?

We’re just a few days away from the first trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and Warner Bros. has just revealed the first poster for the film.

It’s a simple image, and the tiny Hobbit in its centre really helps establish just how large the film is set to be. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Smaug should be an incredible character, and I can’t wait to see this story continue.

Take a look at the poster below, and let us know what you think! The film’s first trailer is set to release this Tuesday, and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug releases on December 13th!

Smaug

Just hours ago Peter Jackson held a special Q&A where they debuted the first footage from the second chapter in The Hobbit trilogy. Well, that footage has now popped up online. Check out the first clip from The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug below!

The Hobbit is a film adaptation of the 1937 novel of the same name by J. R. R. Tolkien and prequel to The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings, returns as director of the film and also serves as producer and co-writer. The films star Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and Richard Armitage, known for playing Lucas North in the BBC drama series Spooks, as Thorin Oakenshield. Several actors from Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film trilogy will reprise their roles, including Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood, and Orlando Bloom. Additionally, composer Howard Shore, who wrote the score for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, has confirmed his role in all three parts of the film project.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug is set to hit theaters December 13, 2013

Alright! It’s an Unexpected Journey Into Darkness! My almost complete thoughts on ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”! Why 48 fps doesn’t bother me! Are there really pacing issues? What IS the Geek Movie Of The Year? Star Trek Into Darkness gets a new trailer and 9 minutes… but what does it mean!?! Getting into comics? What should you read? ‘Adventure Time’ gets an awesome game! PLUS! Jonathan opens the FINAL issue of Nintendo Power! The sadness!

Nine years after the release of The Return Of The King, Peter Jackson’s long awaited return to middle earth is here. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey takes place 60 years before The Fellowship Of The Ring and tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, which you met in that film, and how he came to possess the ring and his journey to help the dwarves reclaim the kingdom of Erebor, their former kingdom that has been taken over by the dragon Smaug.

The film may indeed be a slow start to this new trilogy, which should be expected when introducing middle-earth and the inhabitants to new viewers, but the team behind the film really do a great job of building up the momentum for the films to follow. Some may argue that the running time of An Unexpected Journey may run a bit long, but fans of Jackson’s middle earth will most likely love that the director added to the world that the books existed in which allowed him to expand upon the original story. After you get through the first part of the movie and Bilbo finally decides to join the group on their journey, the film really picks up and begins the journey that we want to see.

Of course the film is heavy on the special effects and you can definitely tell what advances have been made since the original middle-earth trilogy. The team behind the film does a fantastic job making orcs, goblins and everything in this universe seem tangible. The sets have great detail put into them and look beautiful from the very start of the film. Action scenes in the film are breathtaking and flow perfectly. Everything in the film is just as rich in detail as you’d come to expect from it, if not surpassing your expectations.

In regards to the cast, Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins is without a doubt the stand-out in the film. He plays the role perfectly and goes on to become to kind of hero that the audiences cheer for with ease. And just like Gandalf, we put our trust in him because he gives us courage. McKellen of course returns at the top of his game as the ever loved Gandalf, who always seems to disappear and return just at the right time. Andy Serkis reprises his role as Gollum and makes the character every bit as sad yet terrifying as we saw him in the last trilogy. Serkis is really at the top of his game this time around. Richard Armitage as Thorin makes a good impression. The rest of the cast is great but no one really stands out more than the rest.

While some may leave this film unsure of Jackson’s decision to stretch two films into a massive epic trilogy, you can definitely understand why he did. The scale of the adventure is huge and had he cut the film down it may have actually have seemed rushed. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is a great first installment to this new trilogy that will offer fans both new and old a quite satisfying journey. Intended to not only build the foundation for what’s to come as well as Peter Jackson’s original middle-earth trilogy and will leave you wanting to see the sequel The Desolation Of Smaug instantly, even though you just spent nearly three hours watching this film. It’s going to be a little bit before we can see how the entire story plays out but Peter Jackson’s return to middle-earth is a journey that is definitely worth taking.

Grade: 4/5

This past Thanksgiving, to prepare for the upcoming release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, I picked up the Lord of the Rings: Extended Editions blu ray set. I really loved the Lord of the Rings films and was excited to revisit them in on their glory!

I can’t explain to you what happened, because these movies are awful. They’re terrible. I can’t outright prove that these three movies caused all of the cancer in the three years they were released, but it can’t NOT be proved, either. Here’s a bunch of reasons why Peter Jackson ruined everything and also probably caused Superstorm Sandy!

Disagree? I’m @joestarr187. Let’s yell at each other! But also, you’re wrong and I’m a writer on the internet!

Crappy slo-mo shots!

I’m sure slo-mo shots looked fantastic in PJ’s wannabe Sam Raimi zombie films, but there’s really no place for them in a billion dollar epic franchise based on the king of all fantasy books. But there are a thousand of them anyway: In Fellowship, almost every shot of Orcs doing stuff in Saruman’s forges looked like Ash would be swinging in yelling ‘GROOVY’ while chainsaw arming people to death. I’m amazed no one got raped by a tree.

Maybe if Peter Jackson hadn’t been so worried about his beard looking nice against his piles of money he would have spared us all the B movie overkill cheese, because by the time Haldir slo-mo died I almost fast-mo died.

Justifications, please!

In Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings, we’re just told things, and never really told why. It’s something that is in the book, so it needs to get marked off of the checklist. If you haven’t read the books, the vague justifications seem like lazy and nonsensical writing. Of course, lazy writing is to be expected from Peter Hackson.

In Fellowship, Elrond tells us that ‘the time of the elves is over’ and that they’re ‘leaving these shores.’

Ok.

Erm… Why? And if they’re leaving, why do they keep sticking around to do things? It makes no sense.

Why not just have Elrond remind Gandalf that the elves have been defending Middle Earth for centuries and are being ordered to evacuate. It’s more or less faithful to the books, as the elves had been encouraging everyone to get on the ships and get the hell out for ages and it’s a better reason than ‘they just are.’

And why does Gimli want to go to Moira? That place is clearly terrible and it seems like he’s the only guy that doesn’t know it. It’s like that one buddy who hasn’t been to a Pizza Hut since 1995 and always wants to go to Pizza Hut and doesn’t know that they fell into shadow sometime in 2001. Is Gimli an idiot? He keeps talking about going to Moira and Gandalf just rolls his eyes with intense fear at the idea and Saruman the Narrator tells us it’s full of crazy looking demons but Gimli keeps right on rambling about his cousin Balin and dwarf buffets.

Just let Gandalf explain why he doesn’t want to go: no one’s heard from Balin’s colony and they might be dead and you need to deal with that and Gimli can ach and laddie and bad date and I’d rather watch that scene than Cahadras, the most worthless ten minutes of any film ever made (and I’m including every youtube video ever uploaded).

Who are all those men fighting for Sauron? We’re never told. They’re just wicked, which with the robes and the elephants  just ends up being uncomfortable code for ‘brown people.’

No more original songs!

There are a million songs in Lord of the Rings. If you cut all of the songs out of Lord of the Rings books, they’re shorter than The Hunger Games.

So why Fellowship ended with a song written by Enya is a mystery so unsolvable that Robert Stack should be telling you about it.

Explain why LOTR is terrible? I can’t deal with that right now! #Transformersjoke

You really have to have Enya? Fine. Just have her open to a random page of the book and plink out some Pure Moods with a rain stick and some synthesized chimes. Just use the lyrics that are already there.

Tolkien is a better writer than you!

Thanks to Eater Jackson, Lord of the Rings is not a good example of an adaption that improves the movie. His version of Aragorn and Arwen’s story is a great example.

Aragorn is ‘one of them Rangers’ and he loves Arwen and he is supposed to be the king. What’s a Ranger? Why isn’t he King? Why hasn’t he just gone ahead and married Arwen?

Apparently in the book these explanations are super complicated, so they had to be changed. So Pete, why isn’t he the king? Well, he’s full of fear and self doubt! The most muddled and lame justification in movie history! Yay!

The problem with Aragorn being full of doubt and weakness is that throughout the next 3 days worth of movie, nothing Aragorn does remotely suggest that he’s afraid, weak, or unsure of himself. He is a total bad ass that sets the Witch King on fire at Weathertop. Gandalf couldn’t even do that, and he’s Magneto. And that guy in Da Vinci Code. Remember when that was a thing that mattered?

The explanations in the book? NOT COMPLICATED. Elrond won’t let him marry Arwen until he’s defeated Sauron and claimed the throne of Gondor. He’s a classic movie dad making the guy that loves his daughter prove himself.

One does not simply walk into Diane Court.

Oh and Sauron destroyed Arnor, his homeland. This gives Aragorn real stakes. How cool would him trusting Frodo to go to Mordor alone with his love life and revenge at stake have been? A lot better than ‘I swore to protect you! Remember earlier when we said you’d have all our weapons?’

The adaptation also tried to make Arwen a cool bad ass chick. They started out well enough with her showing up in the woods to save Frodo, but her storyline quickly devolves into a bunch of terrible nonsense about her leaving Rivendell but coming back six times and then almost dying for some reason and who cares. She’s a Bella Swan that sits and cries and then gets married.

Let the book do the work for you. In the book, Aragorn rides around being awesome with a group of rangers and Elrond’s sons. Later, Elrond’s sons deliver all of Aragorn’s king gear to him in Rohan. Just make the brothers Arwen!

Toss a scene after the Council in Rivendell of Aragorn and Gandalf ordering the Rangers, led by a likeable Phil Coulson character, to spread out and take warnings about Sauron throughout Middle Earth. Arwen tries to go and Elrond won’t let her because parents just don’t understand. And then instead of a random group of elves showing up at Helm’s Deep, Phil Coulson can show up with Rangers and we’ll like him even more.

With Arwen ACTIVELY refusing to give up on Middle Earth instead of just dreamily saying she won’t, Elrond eventually realizes that his daughter is awesome and deserves some support, and has the sword reforged and gives it to her to take to Aragorn herself. This also givens Arwen and Elrond a logical, satisfying story arc instead of collection of random shots of them lounging in an Instagram filter.

Which brings us to the worst part of Jackson’s adaptation: the Paths of the Dead. AKA, Aragorn shows up with a ghost army and saves the day, making the sacrifice of everyone that died defending Gondor completely pointless because there are no stakes when an unbeatable ghost army gets involved. It’s why I hated The King’s Speech.

Arwen shows up with the sword in Rohan with some rangers. She says ‘hey, me and Phil Coulson gathered all the Ranger companies and the militias on the coast because remember you told us to do that in the first movie but there’s a Corsair fleet penning them in. Here’s your sword. Here’s the banner of the King. Let’s get these ghosts to get our army free.’ That’s more or less what happens in the book.

How cool of a moment could we have had in the movie if the black fleet had shown up at Gondor, and then flown the banner of the King? And then Aragorn and a shitload of Rangers and his hot wife and a dwarf and Orlando Bloom charge out of the boats, inspiring everyone to fight harder and get excited about The Return of the King? Because in the movie I’m not sure anyone knew he was back until they put a crown on his head.

Instead we followed up that fantastic charge of Rohan with a big ghost fart. It was like dumping a Jar Jar scene into the middle of Empire. “I love you.” “I know.” “MEESA LOVES AN APPLE! OHHHBIDAISIES, ANI!”

Less Oscar Moments, Please.

Peter Jackson has two settings: Frodo and Sam Are Crying and Frodo Is Dying While Sam Cries. He’s about as subtle as an episode of ‘The New Normal.’ Do Hobbits breathe with tears? These fuckers cry and hug for two entire movies. Sam’s ‘I can carry you!’ moment is supposed to be the beautiful, emotional heroic moment of the film, but at that point we just want these assholes to quit crying and get up the damn mountain.

Take out 94% of the shots of Frodo and Sam gacking up eye butter and you’ve got an extra hour for Rangers and Paths of the Dead and probably some Tom Bombadil because people seemed really pissed off he was cut.

There you have it. You now know that Lord of the Rings was crappy and now your life has completely changed from reading this article.

Is there hope for The Hobbit?

I’d like to stroll into the theatre without a care in the world, ready to enjoy Martin Freeman take his rightful place as one of the world’s biggest movie stars. But more than likely, I’ll be hoping the eagles save me 20 minutes into the movie.

At least people will finally get what the hell those eagles were all about.

Well, Entertainment Weekly seems to have just skipped the second movie in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy and went straight into giving us a look at the third film. The still features Orlando Bloom as Legolas and Luke Evans as Bard The Bowman. This image definitely seems to confirm that Bard will have a much larger role in the films and that Legolas may be making more than just a cameo in the film.

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters December 14th.

Check out a new TV spot for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey containing a few brief shots giving us a first glimpse at the dragon Smaug, who will be voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, in the movie. Can you hold yourself together for two more weeks until the film hits theaters?

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey takes you back to middle earth on December 14th.

This must be absolutely nerve-wracking! Peter Jackson’s adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit is set to premiere in New Zealand this Wednesday, but the film isn’t even finished post production!

The team has less than 48 hours to complete the movie, so it’s a definite race against the clock. Everything of course, is detailed in the latest Hobbit video diary. Maybe if they didn’t spend so much time on these, the movie would be done (though they’re very cool and are a pleasure to watch)!

Since you’re probably not going to the premiere, you’ll be able to check out The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on December 14th. Excited? Will you be seeing the movie in traditional 24fps, or are you lucky enough to live near a 48fps showing?

I can’t wait!

So, as if going to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey by itself wasn’t enough already…you’re getting plenty of trailers attached to the movie. It’s already been revealed that Man Of Steel as well as Star Trek Into Darkness would have attached to the film. Oh, is that not enough for you? Well, let’s give you another reason.

It’s been revealed that the first trailer for James Mangold’s The Wolverine will also be attached to Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on December 14th. So, have you gotten your tickets yet? Because you just might want to.

I have to say, I’ve witnessed a lot of fantastic and original marketing this week. Yesterday we showed you the hilarious first part of a new marketing strategy for Far Cry 3, and today we get a very unexpected mash up of fantasy and reality.

Air New Zealand has partnered with WETA to produce a fun new air safety video for the airline. The video includes a cameo appearance by Sir Peter Jackson, as well as fan favourite Smeagol. It’s quite hilarious to see your standard air safety procedures acted out by folks straight out of Middle-earth.

The video lasts just a few minutes, and it’s definitely worth a watch. Also, air safety is important both on and off the plane, so get on it! Safety first!

Are you looking forward to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey?

New Line today released the first television spot for the upcoming (and highly anticipated) first chapter of the Hobbit trilogy.

Peter Jackson of course returned to direct the film, which looks nothing short of fantastic at this point. As most of you know, the film will also be shown in a new 60 frames per second format in some theatres, which is nearly 3 times the FPS of a traditional film. At any rate, it will be interesting to see how the new format pans out.

Check out the spot below, and let us know what you think! The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens on December 15th.

Been awhile since you read The Hobbit? Here’s the synopsis for the film:

Stephen Colbert, the host of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, will be making a cameo appearance in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy. Colbert will not be appearing in the first film but will either appear in The Hobbit: Desolation Of Smaug or the third film The Hobbit: There And Back Again.

Colbert is well known to be a huge J.R.R. Tolkien and Lord Of The Rings fan. There is no word currently whether he will be a key character or just part of the background. Could he possibly be appearing as an elf in the film being that the comedian is fluent in elvish?

A press release issued earlier today by Warner Bros. has confirmed that the studios has plans to release an extended version of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey next year. Come on, you really didn’t expect this one? The release is presumably to tie-in with the release of the second film in the trilogy, The Desolation Of Smaug, next year. I’m actually pretty sure you can expect extended cuts of all three films. Here’s an excerpt from the press release:

And finally, among the new films you can expect on Blu-ray and DVD in 2013 are The Wachowskis’ Cloud Atlas and – officially confirmed here for the first time – Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Extended Edition (Q4). One suspects a theatrical cut will be released earlier in 2013, following the home video release pattern of the previous Lord of the Rings films. And it’s reasonable to suspect that a Blu-ray 3D version will be forthcoming as well.

Last week, we learned that Peter Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, was interested in directing an episode of Doctor Who. The idea came up when Matt Smith expressed his interest in filming an episode in New Zealand with Jackson as the director:

“Let’s get Peter Jackson to direct one and go and make it in New Zealand. I would love to, I will campaign endlessly to come over and film there. There’s clearly a great film industry out there. It’s something I would be very interested in, it’s just whether we can persuade the producers to fly us all over.”

Upon hearing Smith’s interest, Jackson responded:

“I’m a huge Doctor Who fan, and I think Matt’s fantastic. Just name the time and place and I’ll be there!”

Since the initial talk of Jackson coming on board to direct an episode, the producers have been contemplating about whether or not the idea is feasible. Series 7 writer, Neil Cross, has spoken about potentially scripting a story that could “only be shot in New Zealand.” It’s a safe assumption that Jackson would probably be in the Director’s Chair.

Caroline Skinner, Executive Producer of Doctor Who, is just as keen on the idea:

“It is beyond wonderful that Peter is a fan of the show and it’s beyond flattering that he’d even think about it. I’m absolutely sure that we couldn’t afford him but, you know, we can always negotiate. His enthusiasm is just fantastic of course.”…”I’m with Matt [Smith]. Of course at some point we’d love to bring Doctor Who down under…it won’t be possible until at least a year after the 50th anniversary. We are already two-thirds of the way through the shoots of series 7 and although we filmed a couple of episodes abroad (Spain and the USA). I can confirm for the rest of series 7 we will be shooting entirely in Cardiff Bay.”…“It won’t be for a while but rest assured that we are thinking about it. The landscapes and just the world of New Zealand is of course phenomenal and many movies are set in your beautiful country. It is also an extremely long way from Cardiff Bay so the logistics and the sheer scale of moving Doctor Who to New Zealand is something that would take an awful lot of planning and time. It’s an enormous thing to move an entire production down there for an episode or two.”

Hopefully we see some Peter Jackson magic in the next series of Doctor Who. I’m thinking it will be a match made in heaven.
