I was fortunate enough to be invited to attend the Blumhouse of Horrors media night several weeks ago, but I was unable to attend. Luckily for me they were gracious enough to reschedule, so this past weekend I made the trek up to downtown LA to check out what terrors lay in wait for me.

The Blumhouse of Horrors is the brain child of Jason Blum, producer of Paranormal ActivityInsidious and Sinister. In this terrifying haunted tour, you explore the corridors of a haunted Los Angeles theater that shut down for 80 years after a tragic accident. It’s halls are filled with the ghosts of past unfortunate victims along with an evil dark arts magician that may have something sinister in store for you…

What I enjoyed the most about Blumhouse was the interactive nature of the tour. It wasn’t like every other maze type haunted house where the only scares that happen are the monsters that jump out at you. The experience itself was like walking through a live play, exploring the back stage of a production where you interact with cast and crew. There were also many unexpected plot twists and features at Blumhouse that I thoroughly enjoyed. I won’t divulge any specifics (wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise), but I can say that the entire walk through kept me on my toes all the way until the very end when we finally made it to safety on the street.

Another plus is that since you’re in downtown LA, you’ll find plenty to do afterwards. Your ticket stub gets you $5 valet parking right around the corner at the Watermarke Tower, 10% off at Towne, and 20% off at LA Brewing Company. There are obviously tons of hot dog carts around as well and LA Live is right down the street.

I’d have to say that this is probably one of the better haunted tours I’ve gone through and I recommend it to anybody looking for a good scare this Halloween season.

I happened to be watching Interview with the Vampire the other night when my friend (thanks Daniel!) let me in on some awesome news: a graphic novel version, written by Anne Rice and illustrated by Ashley Marie Witter, will be released later this Fall on November 30th. I never even knew she was planning on creating a graphic novel version, I’m a bit behind, but I’m glad that she is. This comic version will retell the story of Interview with the Vampire, but from the point of view of young Claudia instead of Louis. If you’ve read the book or seen the movie, you know that she was a pretty terrifying vampire with a tragic life. It should make for an interesting read.

The first few pages of illustrations look extremely amazing and I really can’t wait for this to come out:

Today, while watching Fido on IFC, a trailer for R. Kelly’s Trapped in the Closet popped up onto the screen. The teaser didn’t divulge much, except that the saga is to continue this fall, so I obviously had to do a little digging. Prior to this serendipitous moment, I had no idea R. Kelly planned on adding to his Trapped in the Closet series, but I sure am glad I do now…

This amazing tale has already been going on 22 chapters strong, and now Sylvester (R. Kelly), Rufus, Cathy, Gwendolyn, Bridget, Big Man, Rosie the Nosy Neighbor, Twan and Pimp Lucius are back for another 22! The first part of the hip hopera has been humorous, dramatic, and definitely full of cliffhangers, I’m sure the next installment won’t disappoint either. The storyline will continue on IFC, perhaps mid-November, as R. Kelly progresses the narrative forward, either clarifying it or complicating it even more.

Be sure to keep an eye out for one of the most epic tales of mystery an intrigue on IFC:

Each year around Halloween I watch re-runs of old horror movies and attend fright fests in the area, but next year Pixar Animation Studios has promised something that will probably take the place of Friday the 13th Part 5 on my list. They have announced that for next year’s Halloween season they plan to release a TV special known as Toy Story of Terror.

From what we’ve heard, Toy Story of Terror will fall under the creepy motel/murder mystery genre. It follows the toys as they arrive at a roadside motel where one of them inexplicably disappears and the survivors must solve the mystery before they’re all gone.

It hasn’t been confirmed whether the same actors from Toy Story 1, 2, & 3 will be returning as the voices of Buzz, Woody, and all the other lovable characters from the series franchise, but I will be keeping my fingers crossed.

This past Friday, I was lucky enough to be invited to the Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor for their opening night and media event. The event was held in the RIP Lounge, a VIP lounge where maze goers can relax on comfy couches as well as enjoy some food and alcoholic beverages while overlooking the entire attraction. I would definitely recommend getting passes for the RIP Lounge to anybody planning on going to Dark Harbor this year. After enjoying some cocktails and snacks, we were told about the new monsters and maze that they had added to their repertoire this year, then we were led downstairs to watch the running of the monsters. It felt like watching a scene from The Walking Dead as hundreds of zombies and creatures came rushing around the corner charging into Dark Harbor while chasing some unfortunate few.

After a few more rounds of cocktails, obviously to boost my courage, we were led around in groups to several of the mazes, the first being Dead Rise, their newest attraction. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but what I can say is that the monsters and scares at Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor are thoroughly frightening. My favorite part of the entire attraction is being able to go onto the Queen Mary. The idea of being on a supposedly haunted ship makes it all the more creepier, not to mention the smell…old, musty, and dank. Everything about that old ship just adds to the tension of even being on it.

If you find that you’ve got a sore throat from screaming too much, you can grab yourself a drink at one of many stalls located in-between the mazes. You can also grab some greasy treats from a variety of different food stands if you feel the need to calm your stomach. And, if you need to take a break from walking around and dealing with monsters getting in your face every five seconds, they have live music and a large seating area for you to enjoy your food and beverage while listening to the sweet, sweet sounds of a screeching guitar. I obviously had to sit and listen to amazing guitar solos as I helped myself to more food and drinks before I continued my exploration of what the Queen Mary had to offer me.

All in all I can say that I had an extremely great time, maybe a little boozed up by the end of it, but a great time nonetheless. If you’re on the fence about going to check out the Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor, I’d say just go for it. You will not be disappointed.

If you haven’t watched tonight’s episode of Doctor Who, I suggest you do so now. The episode, titled The Angels Take Manhattan, was the fall series finale as well as Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory’s (Arthur Darvill) final adventure with the Doctor (Matt Smith). The ending was extremely heart wrenching, and if you are a Who fan, I, as well as the Doctor, expect you to “have a lump in your throat somewhere by the  end of it. And if you don’t, then you’re an alien.” And if you are an alien, then the Doctor will be coming to get you.

Below is a 12-minute tribute video to the Ponds featuring Smith, Gillan, and Darvill, along with Steven Moffat and Caroline Skinner. It timelines the Ponds’ adventures with the Doctor from the beginning to the extremely tearful goodbyes.

And all we’re saying is… we told you this had to happen a year ago.

Last week, we learned that Peter Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, was interested in directing an episode of Doctor Who. The idea came up when Matt Smith expressed his interest in filming an episode in New Zealand with Jackson as the director:

“Let’s get Peter Jackson to direct one and go and make it in New Zealand. I would love to, I will campaign endlessly to come over and film there. There’s clearly a great film industry out there. It’s something I would be very interested in, it’s just whether we can persuade the producers to fly us all over.”

Upon hearing Smith’s interest, Jackson responded:

“I’m a huge Doctor Who fan, and I think Matt’s fantastic. Just name the time and place and I’ll be there!”

Since the initial talk of Jackson coming on board to direct an episode, the producers have been contemplating about whether or not the idea is feasible. Series 7 writer, Neil Cross, has spoken about potentially scripting a story that could “only be shot in New Zealand.” It’s a safe assumption that Jackson would probably be in the Director’s Chair.

Caroline Skinner, Executive Producer of Doctor Who, is just as keen on the idea:

“It is beyond wonderful that Peter is a fan of the show and it’s beyond flattering that he’d even think about it. I’m absolutely sure that we couldn’t afford him but, you know, we can always negotiate. His enthusiasm is just fantastic of course.”…”I’m with Matt [Smith]. Of course at some point we’d love to bring Doctor Who down under…it won’t be possible until at least a year after the 50th anniversary. We are already two-thirds of the way through the shoots of series 7 and although we filmed a couple of episodes abroad (Spain and the USA). I can confirm for the rest of series 7 we will be shooting entirely in Cardiff Bay.”…“It won’t be for a while but rest assured that we are thinking about it. The landscapes and just the world of New Zealand is of course phenomenal and many movies are set in your beautiful country. It is also an extremely long way from Cardiff Bay so the logistics and the sheer scale of moving Doctor Who to New Zealand is something that would take an awful lot of planning and time. It’s an enormous thing to move an entire production down there for an episode or two.”

Hopefully we see some Peter Jackson magic in the next series of Doctor Who. I’m thinking it will be a match made in heaven.

Since the early 70s, Stephen King has been instilling nightmares in us with a large array of creepy novels such as Carrie (1974), IT (1986), and Misery (1987), many of which were adapted for the silver screen. One such novel was The Shining (1977), whose 1980 film adaptation was directed and produced by Stanley Kubrick and starred Jack Nicholson along with some really creepy twins.

Now, over 30 years later, King has revealed the release date for Doctor Sleep, the sequel to The Shining. It is set to come out this time next year, so we’ve got some waiting to do.  The storyline of Doctor Sleep follows Danny Torrance, the son of killer Jack from the original, as he continues life in adulthood. According to io9:

“Danny is a hospice worker who uses his powers to help ill patients to pass away without pain. Unfortunately, he runs afoul of a gang of wandering psychic vampires who feed on people’s energy.”

Should be interesting…

Here’s a video of King reading a chapter of Doctor Sleep:

Guillermo Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) has decided to move to the small screen for the time being with an adaptation of The Nutshell Studies Of Unexplained Deaths. The new project to debut on HBO will simply be called The Nutshell Studies, and Del Toro is set to be the director and executive producer. He will be working alongside Sara Gran (writer of TNT’s Southland) who will co-executive produce as well as write for the show.

The book the project is based upon was written by author and photographer Corinne May Botz. It centers around forensic pioneer Frances Glessner Lee, the founder of Harvard’s Department of Legal Medicine in the 1930s who later became a captain in the New Hampshire Police Department. The HBO project itself will be a fictionalized version of the book, revolving around a 1950s housewife who becomes obsessed with solving brutal murders creating diorama reconstructions of the murder scene. The Hithcockian aspect of it will surely make for a creepy show.

Little information has been released as to whether The Nutshell Studies is to be a mini-movie, miniseries, or an ongoing series, but whatever the case may be, I’m sure it will be amazing.

In last season’s finale of Sherlock, the ending came as a surprise when Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) jumped off the top of a building to his supposed death. Was this to be the end of our favorite detective? Well, we know that season 3 will begin sometime next year, so maybe we haven’t lost him just yet.

Since the episode aired in January, there have been a lot of speculations as to what really happened when Sherlock took the jump. Fans have come up with wild ideas as to how he could have survived the fall and have spoken up about their many theories. In a recent interview with Cumberbatch, he explained his surprise to all of the reactions from the apparent death in the season finale. He said,

“The level of obsession with it was nuts. When I read that in the script I got the biggest kick of my life. I remember ringing Martin and going, “Oh my f**king God. Have you read this?”

He also joked about the many theories that had been circulating among the fans:

“All the homeless people in London caught me [laughs]. They formed a human mattress and it was lovely. It was like getting the bumps on your birthday, I didn’t feel a thing. Seriously though, I did that jump. I was on a wire and went off the edge of the building. I was jumping off about three metres into a bunch of cardboard boxes with only a railing separating me from the real drop. We did it about two or three times in the rain with people filming opposite, and it was f**king amazing. I’ve skydived three times and it was nearly as thrilling. I even did a sky dive while I was in New Zealand, which I shouldn’t be telling anyone, but there you go.”

Cumberbatch, unfortunately, didn’t let slip any hints on exactly how Sherlock survived his fall, but he did let us know that Steven Moffat plans to begin filming in January of next year. Looks like we’ve still got more waiting and theorizing to do between now and then.

A lot of talk has been circulating about the heartbreak we can expect due to the departure of Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) in this series of Doctor Who. We know that the last episode they appear in will be The Angels Take Manhattan, but Steven Moffat hasn’t ruled out whether or not one of our beloved companions will be killed off.

Now, in a recent interview with Matt Smith about series 7, he said:

“What’s really  interesting about these next five episodes…it deals with the fall of the Ponds and the demise of those two great companions that the Doctor is hugely, hugely attracted to and had such a significant impact on him as a character and for me as an actor. So that’s bound to be an event that flips his universe massively.”

His use of the word demise is what really piqued my interest. Does that mean we can expect the death of one, or possibly even both, of the Ponds? The suspense is killing me…

Series 7 of Doctor Who premiered the other night on BBC America’s Sci-Fi Saturday with the debut of a new character played by Jenna-Louise Coleman. We had all expected to see her later in the series as the Doctor’s new companion, so her appearance last night came as quite a surprise.

Even though there had been four separate screenings of Asylum of the Daleksthere were no leaks about Coleman’s character from the press or fans. Steven Moffat, Executive Producer and Head writer, expresses his gratitude for their silence:

“I hope you all got a nice surprise when Jenna popped up in Doctor Who several months early. If so, that surprise came to you courtesy of the frankly magnificent ladies and gentlemen of the press, and of the many Doctor Who forums and blogs too. This show has been seen at four separate screenings, across four different countries and yet not one person gave one spoiler. From all of us on Doctor Who, a heartfelt thank you for helping us tell our story.”

What other surprises do you think we can expect in the rest of the series?

Not too much information has been released about the next season of Sherlock, but Steven Moffat (Doctor Who) has been kind enough to give us some key information about what we can expect. This past Friday, August 24th, Moffat Tweeted, “The three words for the next run of Sherlock…Rat. Wedding. Bow.” These three words correspond with the three upcoming episodes in next seasons run of the show.

Last season, the three words that Moffat released were woman, hound, and fall. The episodes that were released later in the year ended up being A Scandal in Bohemia, The Hounds of Baskerville, and The Final Problem. Now, the little hints given this year make us think that the stories we can expect will be The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire or The Giant Rat of Sumatra, The Noble Bachelor, and The Last Bow. Exciting, right? Well, maybe not. Chronologically speaking, The Last Bow was the final story in the Sherlock Holmes series by Conan Doyle and happens to be the story where Holmes retires. This sudden end of the series could be due to the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and Martin Freeman (Watson) have received more film offers and their schedules, including Moffat’s, have become bogged down. Not a very pleasant thought for all us Sherlock fans out there…

Even with these subtle clues, we have information that could prove otherwise. Mark Gattis, co-writer of Sherlock, had previously confirmed that The Adventure of the Empty House would be the first episode of the returning season. The storyline would confirm the survival of Holmes and his reunion with Watson, as well as the remaining threats of Moriarty.

Perhaps this means the end of our dynamic duo, but since Moffat, Cumberbatch, and Freeman have all expressed interest in continuing the series, it does give me some hope.

After last weeks premiere of the BBC America original Series Copper, the critics have fallen in love with the show and lead man Tom Weston-Jones. With 1.8 million viewers, the show holds the spot of the highest rated series premiere on BBC America. Since it’s debut, The Los Angeles Times believes the production to be “an impressive piece of work.”

Weston-Jones plays the clever and morally complex Detective Kevin Corcoran. In a recap of the first episode, Surviving Death, The Wall Street Journal gives insight on what type of character Corcoran is:

“[Corcoran] is a police officer who doesn’t play by the rules, but that’s OK because it’s 1864 and there doesn’t seem to be too many of them.”

The show was created by Barry Levinson and Tom Fantana (producers of the HBO series Oz) and centers around Weston-Jones’s character, an Irish immigrant cop who patrols the Five Points in 1860s New York City. Throughout the series he will be dealing with the aftermath of the American Civil War along with social inequality within the aristocratic and African-American societies.

An amazing time period drama filled with corruption, whore houses, and violence…how exciting. Episode two, Husbands and Fathers, will be airing Sunday, August 26 at 10 pm pacific time. Make sure to check it out if you haven’t already!

Though the downtime between seasons 1 and 2 was nearly 2 years, Steven Moffat (Doctor Who) ensures fans that the wait for season 3 of Sherlock won’t be “too long.” Anything over a year seems like ages to us, but for British viewers who are more accustomed to shorter seasons, the time and effort put into each episode makes for a better series.

“Get used to a bit of starvation.” Moffat says. “We’re making movies–those six films we’ve made could go in the cinema. You can’t factory produce that–it’s a different kind of show. So, when we’re good and ready–it won’t be that long–but when we’re ready, you’ll get the follow up.”

Another thing to consider is the fact that the stars of the show, Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and Martin Freeman (Watson), along with Moffat, have become hot commodities in the TV and film industry. Moffat will be busy with the return of Doctor Who and a possible sequel of Tin Tin, Cumberbatch is said to be casted as the villain in J.J. Abrams Star Trek 2, and Freeman will be featured in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, along with his Sherlock co-star Cumberbatch. Though the cast are busy with projects of their own, none have any intentions to leave. With so many projects at play, it is no wonder that the season 3 premiere is still up in the air.

In a previous article, I wrote that BBC had confirmed that the premiere of Doctor Who will be Saturday, September 1 with Asylum of the Daleks. But, they have decided to give us a little treat by releasing a five-part mini adventure starting Monday, August 27, at noon on the official BBC website, with parts 2-5 broadcasting from the site throughout the week.

Pond Life, featuring the Doctor (Matt Smith), Amy (Karen Gillan), and Rory (Arthur Darvill), was written by Chris Chibnall and directed by Saul Metzstein. Throughout the mini adventure, we can expect to see what the crew has been up to since the end of the last series.

Chibnall gives some insight on what the mini series will be about:

“Pond Life provides us with a lovely opportunity to catch-up with Amy and Rory since we saw them at the end of the last series.  It opens with the Ponds at home and gives us an insight in to just what happens when the Doctor drops in and out of their lives.  Travelling with the Doctor is one of the greatest things you can do, but it’s fun to spend a few moments looking at the chaos he can also bring.”

Caroline Skinner, Executive Producer, also sheds some light on what we can expect:

“Chris has written a beautiful, heartfelt and wickedly funny piece about the adventures the Ponds have been having with the Doctor since we last saw them on-screen.  It’s not long till the series itself will be back with a vengeance – but in the meantime, Pond Life is a truly heart-warming piece about our best-loved companions and their madcap relationship with their raggedy Doctor.”

Check out this video of Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill as they give you a brief introduction into Pond Life.

More information about Pond Life will be released as the date draws near.

So if you already made plans this weekend, I suggest you cancel them. I was trying to find a nice little project for myself, when I stumbled across this gem on the internet. The BBC blueprints on how to build a Dalek! WARNING! This is not a project for the faint of heart. You will definitely need to have some “do-it-yourself” know how to complete this one.

Apparently, there was a Doctor Who fan back in the 80’s by the name of Ronald that wrote to the productions team asking for the DIY build plans of a Dalek. What he got in return was a response letter along with a copy of the blueprints that were originally released in 1973. I wonder if they would release some sonic screwdriver blueprints if I asked them nicely…

If you’re feeling up to the task, and you have some woodworking and metalworking skills, then I highly encourage you to try this one out. Maybe create your own army of Daleks and scare all your neighbors. If you do decide to take this project on, definitely send in some pictures! I’d love to see your Dalek creation!

After all the rumors that have been circulating around about when the Doctor will return, BBC has finally confirmed that the new series of Doctor Who will premiere on Saturday, September 1. They have also released the official synopses for the first three episodes!

Asylum of the Daleks

“Kidnapped by his oldest foe, the Doctor is forced on an impossible mission – to a place even the Daleks are too terrified to enter… the Asylum. A planetary prison confining the most terrifying and insane of their kind, the Doctor and the Ponds must find an escape route. But with Amy and Rory’s relationship in meltdown, and an army of mad Daleks closing in, it is up to the Doctor to save their lives, as well as the Ponds’ marriage.”

Dinosaurs on a Spaceship

“An unmanned spaceship hurtles towards certain destruction – unless the Doctor can save it, and its impossible cargo… of dinosaurs! By his side a ragtag gang of adventurers; a big game hunter, an Egyptian Queen and a surprised member of the Pond family. But little does the Doctor know there is someone else onboard who will stop at nothing to keep hold of his precious, prehistoric cargo.”

A Town Called Mercy

“The Doctor gets a Stetson (and a gun!), and finds himself the reluctant Sheriff of a Western town under siege by a relentless cyborg, who goes by the name of the Gunslinger. But who is he and what does he want? The answer seems to lie with the mysterious, Kahler-Jex, an alien doctor (yes another one!) whose initial appearance is hiding a dark secret.”

What we can also expect is the death of one of the TARDIS crew members midway through the season and the addition of another, Rory’s Dad, played by Mark Williams (Mr. Weasley of the Harry Potter franchise.) A new companion will also be joining the Doctor partway through the season once the TARDIS crew parts ways in episode six. Carla, portrayed by Jenna-Lousie Coleman, is rumored to be the daughter of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, who was played by the late actor Nicholas Courtney.

Other rumors that have been circulating as of late is the revamp of the TARDIS in honor of the Doctor’s 50th Anniversary and that Neil Gaiman, writer of The Doctor’s Wife in series 6, will be returning to write a few episodes (perhaps episodes 12 and 13) of series 7.

So in the last article I wrote, we found out that the first episode would have it’s debut at the BFI. And now they have just released the titles for episodes 4 and 5! So here is a little sneak peak for what adventures you can expect in the upcoming series:

Asylum of the Daleks, by Steven Moffat

Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, by Chris Chibnall

A Town Called Mercy, by Toby Whithouse

The Power of Three, by Chris Chibnall

The Angels Take Manhattan, by Steven Moffat

You can expect more information as the premiere of series seven draws near.

For all you gore and horror fans out there, Christmas has come early! Eli Roth’s brainchild, GORETORIUM, will be opening September 23rd on the Las Vegas strip, right across from the Cosmopolitan and the City Center.

“The GORETORIUM will be a destination for both horror fans and tourists from around the world, 365 days a year”, Roth said. “We are creating the most intense live terror experience a person can have, incorporating the latest technology with old-fashioned scares…No matter how many haunted houses you’ve been through, you have never been through anything quite like the GORETORIUM.”

Set in a vintage hotel, that is said to rival many Hollywood backdrops, is a multi-level maze full of terrors that tell the tale of Sin City’s most deadly and mythical hotel and casino, The Delmont. Around every corner you will encounter past hotel victims and the cannibalistic serial-killing proprietors as you make your way through the lobby and horrifying labyrinth of the self-guided tour.

Once you’ve had your fill of blood and guts, you can head over to “Baby Dolls.” The 60’s inspired lounge will offer magnificent views of the City Center alongside zombie go-go dancers. Stay long enough and you’ll be treated to a “live feeding.” If watching dead, half-naked girls eating flesh isn’t really your thing, you can always grab a drink at the to-go bar, “Bloody Mary’s.” And if all this murder business is making you feel romantic, or maybe it’s the drinks mixed with some bad decisions, you can even head over to the Wedding Chapel to get married.
