[This unboxing is based on a sample provided by Loot Crate.]

The previous two months of Loot Wear crates, for the most part, haven’t wowed me. The quality has been fine, and all but the licenses used just weren’t within my realm of interests. That completely changed with this month’s shipment. Bearing the theme “Magical,” the titles included are Kingdom Hearts, Harry Potter, Dr. Strange, and Adventure Time.

lootwearnov16-khscarf

My favorite item from this month is the Kingdom Hearts Icons Scarf. It is very soft and consists of several layers, providing a considerable amount of warmth. It is a nice, subtle way to show your love for the game series in the cold weather months.

lootwearnov16-harrypottersocks

Dobby would have loved these. The Harry Potter socks are so freaking cute I don’t know whether to put them on my feet or frame them! The print bears a mix of the story’s characters (Hedwig in the cage!) along with spells. Expecto Patronum!

lootweardnov16-hogwartsloungepants

Harry Potter‘s other item is the Crest Logo (lounge) pants. Like the lounge pants found in this month’s Loot Anime crate, these are made of a light jersey fabric. The four Houses in Hogwarts are represented here: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. One neat detail about the print on the pants is that House crests are made to look like patches with faux stitching around the edging.

lootweardnov16-drstrangesocks

The second pair of socks is themed to Doctor Strange with the Eye of Agamotto on the top of each. These would make a fun accessory to a cosplay outfit.

lootwearnov16-drstrangeshirt

Building on the the whole “ugly Christmas sweater” trend, Loot Wear included a Doctor Strange shirt that imitates sweater patterns. In all honesty, the shirt graphic more brings to mind NES graphics rather than the stitches on a garment. It is still nifty, though.

lootwearnov16-adventuretimeunderwear

I think it is combination of my not wearing men’s underwear and lack of interest in the Adventure Time series that adds up to this pair of Earl of Lemongrab underwear being the least cool item in the crate. All things considered, five out of six is a pretty dang good.

Marvel one-ups itself again with spellbinding visuals and a stunning performance from Benedict Cumberbatch as “Doctor Strange.” That’s hard to do considering the company that the film joins, but with the driving force of director Scott Derrickson (Deliver Us From Evil) his film surely deserves a spot within the top seven films in the Marvel Universe (MU).

Considering that “Doctor Strange” is mostly a B-level character it comes to no surprise that Marvel is able to mold the mythos into a worthy film. Some keep waiting for the so-called super hero fatigue to hit but with Marvel leading the way with quality films that are balanced, well-written, and containing worthy characters, it just seems to not be happening.

Some may have thought “Doctor Strange” was possibly going to be a miss for Disney. However, the film easily impresses with a solid story as it follows a similar pattern of intrigue, witty humor, action packed visuals, alongside thoughtful and smart casting that Marvel just keeps repeating.

The choice of going with a B-level character is a smart move for Marvel as “Doctor Strange” offers a new level of ability that the others such as Iron Man, Thor, and Hulk do not share (despite the Scarlet Witch).

Strange gets his powers from magic. His talent stems from his photographic memory that allows him to learn effectively from ancient books of magic and gives him the ability to perform complicated spells that harness mystical energies and forces that are unseen to the regular people. His character fits well into the universe as something different as he is able to do things and go places the other characters in the MU cannot. That appeal is part of why this character sucessfully avoids the fatigue mentioned already; and of course the superior directing and acting too.

It’s all to easy to say Benedict Cumberbatch is the definitive driving force of the film and many will. However, the entire cast was perfectly realized. Despite the rumblings from the peanut gallery on Tilda Swinton’s casting as The Ancient One, there is no one who could have played the role better. She’s just the right amount of other worldliness and at the same time human, creating this ethereal being that can wield power and empathy equally. Her performance takes me back to her character “Mason” in the equally trippy film “Snowpiercer” where despite her small role, it contributed vastly.

In a film with Cumberbatch and Swinton it’s easy to maybe pass up on Chiwetel Ejiofor who plays Mordor. He’s a mentor to Dr. Steven Strange and even makes a case to the Ancient One as to why Strange should be allowed to learn from them. If you are familiar with the comic or cartoon then you know his destiny and I won’t spoil it. Let’s just say that his ability to portray characters with great range will create a wonderful dynamic down the line in the next film.

Also, easily dismiss-able in super hero flicks is the love interest. In the original “Thor” movie with Natalie Portman cast as the love-interest, her character was just a non-entity. She didn’t bring chemistry nor much humor with the two dimensional character she played (in both films). On the flip-side “Strange” cast Rachel McAdams, who gets some great screen time where her character is allowed to play a wide range of emotions. She’s funny in the right places, sad, hurt, excited and the character feels a lot more real when compared to some other equally good Marvel films with weaker love interests. It was smart this time out to make sure this small character was not written as flat. The character’s ability to recognize the changes in Steven Strange help the audience define how he evolves as a person. This creates more gravitas for the story and the growth of the Strange character <which is important in an origin story>.

There’s more. There’s the villain, Mads Mikkelsen as Kaecilius. He’s the Ancient One’s traitorous former disciple. Is there any role Mikkelsen can’t shine in? For a equally trippy ride see him in “Men & Chicken.”

Marvel once again delivers on a solid super hero film making sure to include just the right amount of humor and action alongside a story that resonates with superb acting. The visuals alone make the film worth seeing in 3-D and even IMAX. Early prediction is that the film will more than likely require repeat viewings not only in the theater but in Blu-Ray ownership down the line. “Doctor Strange” is highly entertaining and a must-see in the theater.

The Final Verdict: 4 out of 5!

A very Happy New Year to our friends who are Sherlock Holmes fans. BBC One announced today that the famous detective will be returning to BBC on January 1st, 2017.

In promoting his movie, Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch has alluded that this may be the last time we see the dynamic duo of John Watson and Sherlock Holmes. According to Cumberbatch, he told GQ magazine, “It goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately.”

At the end of the last series, and the Christmas special, we see that things from Sherlock’s past is catching up with him. That not everything is as they seem.

True to the Sherlock fashion, the series will only be 3 episodes, each having a title or story based on a short story written by Sir Arthur Coonan Doyle. The first episode, entitled ‘The Six Thatchers‘ with it’s title loosely based on the short story The Adventures of the Six Napoleons.

Watch the teaser down below and let us know your thoughts!

Briefly: We’re now just a few months away from Marvel’s insanely anticipated Doctor Strange, and the studio today released a short new sneak peek at the film, detailing Mordo, the ‘Zealot’s, and so much more.

The featurette comes in at just a minute long, though looks to be a piece of a larger puzzle that I’m hoping we’ll see soon. In any case, it’s fantastic to get some more insight on the still fairly mysterious film, even if it’s just barely 60 seconds worth.

The film follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.

Briefly: Following the epic first trailer for Doctor Strange, Marvel has just revealed the official synopsis for the highly anticipated film, while also releasing the synopsis for the even more anticipated (at least by myself) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Doctor Strange will hit theatres on November 4th, and it “follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 won’t release until May 5th, 2017, and its synopsis will have you itching for literally any news about the film:

“Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.”

Who are Peter Quill’s parents? Which fan-favourite characters will we see? Damnit, it’s going to be a long wait.

Briefly: Oh heck yes.

The very first trailer for Marvel’s Doctor Strange just debuted on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and it’s so cool.

It’s our first look at Cumberbatch in motion as Stephen Strange, and he looks absolutely fabulous. The trailer definitely throws off some way too heavy Inception vibes, but is a great first look at Marvel’s next money printing machine.

When famous neurosurgeon Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) suffers career-ending injuries in a devastating car crash, he seeks help in the furthest reaches of the world! Hoping to find cures for his injuries, Strange instead uncovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

Briefly: Just a few hours ago we received our first official look at Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange via the latest cover for Entertainment Weekly, and the publication has now published more gorgeous photos from the anticipated film.

The images consist of two photos (one pretty magical), and a few sleek pieces of concept art for the film. I don’t know if there was any doubt on this one, but it’s pretty clear from the stills that Cumberbatch looks absolutely exceptional in this outfit.

Of course, we still don’t know much at all about the feature, but hopefully something will be revealed soon! In any case, you can take a look at the new stills below, and be sure to let us know what you hope to see in the film! Doctor Strange hits theatres on November 4th, 2016!

Briefly: It’s finally, officially in production. Phew, we though that this one was on thin ice (not).

Yep, Marvel today officially revealed that Doctor Strange is now in production. The film stars the wondrous Benedict Cumberbatch as the famed Stephen Strange, and the official release came with a very unexpected first synopsis:

In Rachel McAdams’ own words to the L.A. Times, “it’s still super-early days, and I don’t know where that’s gonna go, if it’s gonna go anywhere at all,” but word that she’s considering taking a leading role across from Benedict Cumberbatch—in the title role—of Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange is very exciting news. McAdams reliably turns in strong performances in romance (The Notebook), comedy (Mean Girls), action (Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes) and is lately proving her dramatic chops with True Detective. (Check out Geekscape’s coverage of True Detective here.)

Honestly—hopefully, without spoiling anything—I’ll admit that I was most into the Sherlock Holmes films when she was most on screen and part of the storyline. Hearing others in Hollywood tell it, McAdams already seems a sort of ethereal presence in Tinseltown—preferring to stick closer to her Canadian roots rather than getting lost in the glitz and glamour—which could naturally bring just the right energy to Doctor Strange.

If she ends up with the, as of yet unnamed, role in Strange, she’ll be joining Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor as well as Cumberbatch in the Scott Derrickson (writer/director of Sinister and Deliver Us from Evil) directed adaptation. I’m not sure if Derrickson’s resume gives me enough to get a bead on how he’ll handle the Strange film but I did sorta appreciate some of the choices he made directing the 2008 remake, The Day the Earth Stood Still. Overall, that film got a pretty cold reception and only almost made its budget back in stateside box-office receipts—but I doubted any update would ever be able to fill the big shoes of the original in the first place and did my best to remain open to it from there. I’m curious to see what Derrickson will do with Doctor Strange—want to give him a shot—but mostly I’m worried. I really want to see Strange a success—especially with the cast being assembled!—and I’ve got my fingers crossed.

As far as which role McAdams may be considering, at this time we can only speculate. So I will!—I’m speculating it’s Clea. I mean, who else? The Sorceress Supreme of the Dark Dimension—she and Doctor Strange are practically a package deal—it makes sense to me. McAdams has that kiss of otherworldly beauty; all she needs is the white hair. Depending on what sort of origin story is told, if Strange is already sort of established from the beginning, the film could be the story of meeting Clea and facing off together against Dormammu! We could then extrapolate that Swinton may be Umar and Ejiofor may be Dormammu, yeah?

Let’s hope there’s a bit less speculation and a whole lot more details soon!

It’s official, Oscar nominated-actor Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) will play the villainous Baron Mordo in Marvel Studio’s upcoming Doctor Strange film. Baron Mordo was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and first appeared in Strange Tales #111. Mordo is a fellow apprentice of the Ancient One but betrays him and Doctor Strange.

The Scott Derrickson directed film also stars Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role.

It might be a little early to get excited for this movie but I think it’s going to have a completely different vibe from all the other Marvel Studio movies when it opens in theatres November 4, 2016.

Today is full of casting announcements. Deadpool has Ryan Reynolds, Jessica Jones has Krysten Ritter, and now Doctor Strange has Benedict Cumberbatch.

From Marvel.com:

The actor will star in Marvel’s “Doctor Strange,” scheduled to hit theaters November 4, 2016. The film, directed by Scott Derrickson with Jon Spaihts writing the screenplay, will follow the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,” said Producer Kevin Feige. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”

Benedict Cumberbatch’s star is higher than ever, having starred this year in The Imitation Game as Alan Turing and as a giant dragon in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. He also has a steady gig working as the famous Sherlock in the critically-acclaimed BBC series of the same name, which is where I suspect he built his massive fanbase. The “Cumberbitches,” as they are, although he thinks that name is degrading. Oh, him.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always been full of A-list stars, but now it’s on a trend of getting the hottest rising ones. Benedict Cumberbatch is one on the verge of total A-list stardom, and a blockbuster Marvel movie just might be the one to truly cement his status.

Furthermore, how much awesome does Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe look? The exciting line-up announced a few months ago set the right mood, and now every casting choice announced so far makes the series look so damn good. 2016 onwards is going to be a hell of an era for superhero movies.

Every year an unexpected film rises out of nowhere and makes its mark on the awards season race. While Morten Tyldum’s The Imitation Game hung quietly on prognosticators’ radars, none expected it to capture the highly coveted People’s Choice Award at TIFF, a recognition that instantly catapults the film into the heart of the Best Picture race. Previous winners of the award include powerhouse titles such as Slumdog Millionaire, The King’s Speech, Silver Linings Playbook and 12 Years a Slave, so it’s easy to understand the significance of such an achievement. But a larger and more important question continues loom over The Imitation Game, can the film hold off a barrage of Oscar-worthy competitors that are still awaiting their releases?

Brilliant mathematician Dr. Alan Turing (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) is summoned to interview with military officials during the German expansion of World War II. Alan is selected as part of a secretive unit tasked with one important mission, to break the most sophisticated encryption machine the world has ever seen. Understanding that human trial and error has no chance of breaking Germany’s Enigma code, Dr. Turing develops an advanced computing machine that helps the allied forces defeat the Nazis and changes the world forever.

2014, THE IMITATION GAME

The Imitation Game has all the makings of an Oscar-caliber film. Director Morten Tyldum brings to life an amazing true story filled with obstacles and complexities that briskly carry the feature from start to finish. And at its core rests a worthy lead, Benedict Cumberbatch, whose intricacies perfectly capture the mind of a mathematician. As a professor of mathematics at a state university in Pennsylvania, I have a first-hand view into such “thinkers” and Cumberbatch sells the role extremely well. Everything from Alan Turing’s difficulties handling social settings to his full-fledged cognitive arrogance. Although I personally felt some of the moments were slightly overacted, Cumberbatch undoubtedly gives an accomplished performance alongside other stellar turns from castmates Keira Knightley and Matthew Goode. With yet another beautiful score from Alexandre Desplat and solid direction from Tyldum, The Imitation Game is an all-around formidable piece of cinema that will certainly find its way into many Oscar discussions.

game2

Although The Imitation Game is a strong piece of filmmaking on various levels, one unfair criticism would be that the feature never really amazes in any particular area. Actually, the movie feels like a bit of a conundrum. For example, I commend the uptempo pacing of Tyldum’s work, yet more interesting ideas and controversies surrounding Alan Turing’s personal life become glossed over in order to achieve a more fluid viewing experience. While such decisions unarguably ease the responsibilities of both the filmmaker and the screenwriter, The Imitation Game becomes merely a partially told story that feels like a slight disservice to such a marvelous and significant man who has left his impression on the modern technological world.

All in all The Imitation Game is an unquestionable crowd-pleaser filled with humor, drama and everything in between. Dr. Alan Turing was a pioneer in the world of technology and a mathematical genius who helped defeat the Nazis. His story of heroics is one that is told very well throughout the film and one that everyone should know, so do yourself a favor and seek out The Imitation Game when it reaches theatres in late-November.

Hot off the digital Presses is this fantastic news!

Sherlock star, and Tumblr heartthrob, Benedict Cumberbatch has just been cast as Doctor Strange in the upcoming film adaptation of the Marvel sorcerer.

With filming set to begin in May of 2015, fans were starting to get a little anxious as to who would play the cult favorite. Early rumors also say that this is NOT going to be an origin film, and as a fan of Strange PhD I cannot be more on board with that decision.

Doctor Strange is being directed by Scott Derrickson and is written by Jon Spaihts.

Dreamworks Animation presented a panel on their upcoming movie, Penguins of Madagascar, the next installment of the Madagascar series, which is centered fully on the adventures of everyone’s favorite flightless birds, the Penguins.

Directed by Eric Darnell (writer for the previous Madagascar movies) and Simon J Smith (Bee Movie), and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Ken Jeong, John Malkovich, Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, John DiMaggio and Christopher Knights, Penguins takes the Skipper and his compatriots deep into the world of global espionage.

dreamworks-animation-panel
Benedict Cumberbatch at the SDCC Penguins of Madagascar panel. Cumberbatch plays Agent Classified in the upcoming movie.

Cumberbatch, Malkovich and McGrath were at Comic Con to talk about their work on Penguins; Cumberbatch plays Agent Classified, a 007-type agent (and also a wolf) who runs a MI-6/SHIELD type agency, while Malkovich takes on the role of the villain, Dr. Octavius Brine (an octopus, naturally). McGrath reprises his role as Skipper, the erstwhile leader of the Penguins.

A–very good–trailer clip was shown to loud applause, and the cast discussed their experiences working on the animated film.

“It was a really interesting character to play.” said Malkovich. “He’s sort of a large, remorseless kind of psychopath, really.”

Cumberbatch revealed that he had just met Malkovich that day, despite co-starring in the movie together, and spoke about how working on the movie taught him a great deal about voiceover work.

The Penguins were originally only in one small scene in the original Madagascar movie, but their popularity has spawned books, a TV show, and now their own movie.

“We found a way to integrate them more into the story,” said McGrath. “And now after three movies, 10 video games, 80 TV shows, they get their own movie.”

Penguins of Madagascar opens on November 26th, 2014. To tide you over, here’s the trailer:

Are you excited? Were you at the panel? What did you think?

The Fifth Estate, a film about the creator of WikiLeaks and all of the drama that ensued upon its creation, dragged at the beginning of the film but eventually picked up.

WikiLeaks creator Julian Assange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness, Sherlock) was a man that many found unlikeable, and a movie focused on this man was a bit tough to take. It started out slow, but picked up as the film went on, especially since it focused a bit more on Assange’s right-hand man Daniel Berg. Berg was depicted in the film as likeable, if not a bit optimistic, and actor Daniel Brühl (Inglorious Basterds, Good bye Lenin!) was excellent in the role.estate18f-3-web

The excellent acting and amazing collection of actors really pulled along a storyline that was, at times, a bit dull. Stanley Tucci and Laura Linney were superb as U.S. Government officials handling the Wikileaks website. Peter Capaldi and David Thewlis held their own as journalists for The Guardian. And of course Cumberbatch is spot-on as the slightly despicable Assange.

Another positive was how director Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters, Kinsey) was able to show so many conversations via IM and other computer-related work in an entertaining way. This could have slowed down the film even more, but instead was one of the bright spots.

maxresdefaultIs the movie worth watching? Sure it is, if you like films about real life events, journalism or government-type movies. Or even if you’re just a big fan of Cumberbatch. The first half is a bit slow, and possibly spends a little too much time trying to give the back story, but about halfway through it starts to pick up.

3 out of 5 stars.

Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange and Daniel Brühl as Daniel Domscheit-Berg in Dreamwork’s The Fifth Estate.

If you missed The Fifth Estate in movie theatres last year, the Julian Assange/Wikileaks biopic will be out on Blu-ray/DVD on January 28th.

The film follows Wikileaks founder Julian Assange (a mesmerizing Benedict Cumberbatch) and Daniel Domscheit-Berg (an equally strong performance by Daniel Brühl) from the Baer bank scandal to the Afghan War Logs release. Based on Domscheit-Berg’s  Inside Wikileaks: My Time With Julian Assange and British Journalists David Leigh and Luke Harding’s Wikileaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War on Secrecy, the movie was not sanctioned by Wikileaks–in fact both Assange and Wikileaks stridently protested against it.

In trying to tell a extremely detailed story about a man many viewed as unlikeable, the film loses itself occasionally, seemingly unsure if Assange is a much-maligned hero responsible for a new, truly free press, or a narcissistic sociopath intent on toppling governments for anarchy’s sake. While director Bill Condin manages to make a bunch of people typing on their laptops watchable, and the dynamic between Cumberbatch and Brühl is riveting,  the majority of the film feels muddled and somewhat meandering, as if it wasn’t sure whether it was a film about journalism, a film about political intrigue, or a film about two men and their work on–and fight for–a new way to distribute and collect information.

Marketing is in full swing for both films. Yesterday, an intense new clip for Iron Man 3 was released, and today, Paramount unveiled a new poster for Star Trek Into Darkness. This one features Benedict Cumberbatch walking away from a burning city. As expected, it looks pretty badass.

Paramount has released a new still from J.J. Abrams highly-anticipated (understatement?) Star Trek Into Darkness. So, remember that scene from the international teaser? Well, this still may shed a little more light on what’s going on. Does the image reveal Benedict Cumberbatch’s mysterious role? Make sure you get your tickets to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey so you can see the first full-length trailer this weekend.

Star Trek Into Darkness is set to hit theaters May 17th, 2013.

Skyfall isn’t even in theaters yet but there’s word that Bond’s next adversary is already lined up. Following the news that that actor Daniel Craig has signed on to star as 007 in two more James Bond films, Express UK’s Day & Night are reporting that Craig will be joined by Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock), and saying the actor has already landed the role of the main antagonist in the twenty fourth Bond film.

“Benedict is considered perfect Bond villain material.Work on the next film will begin next year and the plan is for Benedict to be on board. He grew up watching Bond, so it would be a childhood ambition fulfilled. Playing a Bond villain is one of the plum roles in film history and he’d jump at the chance.”

The actor stated a few months back that he would jump at the chance of playing James Bond, and while he won’t be playing Bond maybe he definitely jumped at the idea of being in a Bond film? No official confirmation has been issued by the studio yet. So, what do you guys think about this one? I already know one Geekscape writer that probably fell out of their chair in excitement.

In last season’s finale of Sherlock, the ending came as a surprise when Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) jumped off the top of a building to his supposed death. Was this to be the end of our favorite detective? Well, we know that season 3 will begin sometime next year, so maybe we haven’t lost him just yet.

Since the episode aired in January, there have been a lot of speculations as to what really happened when Sherlock took the jump. Fans have come up with wild ideas as to how he could have survived the fall and have spoken up about their many theories. In a recent interview with Cumberbatch, he explained his surprise to all of the reactions from the apparent death in the season finale. He said,

“The level of obsession with it was nuts. When I read that in the script I got the biggest kick of my life. I remember ringing Martin and going, “Oh my f**king God. Have you read this?”

He also joked about the many theories that had been circulating among the fans:

“All the homeless people in London caught me [laughs]. They formed a human mattress and it was lovely. It was like getting the bumps on your birthday, I didn’t feel a thing. Seriously though, I did that jump. I was on a wire and went off the edge of the building. I was jumping off about three metres into a bunch of cardboard boxes with only a railing separating me from the real drop. We did it about two or three times in the rain with people filming opposite, and it was f**king amazing. I’ve skydived three times and it was nearly as thrilling. I even did a sky dive while I was in New Zealand, which I shouldn’t be telling anyone, but there you go.”

Cumberbatch, unfortunately, didn’t let slip any hints on exactly how Sherlock survived his fall, but he did let us know that Steven Moffat plans to begin filming in January of next year. Looks like we’ve still got more waiting and theorizing to do between now and then.

Not too much information has been released about the next season of Sherlock, but Steven Moffat (Doctor Who) has been kind enough to give us some key information about what we can expect. This past Friday, August 24th, Moffat Tweeted, “The three words for the next run of Sherlock…Rat. Wedding. Bow.” These three words correspond with the three upcoming episodes in next seasons run of the show.

Last season, the three words that Moffat released were woman, hound, and fall. The episodes that were released later in the year ended up being A Scandal in Bohemia, The Hounds of Baskerville, and The Final Problem. Now, the little hints given this year make us think that the stories we can expect will be The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire or The Giant Rat of Sumatra, The Noble Bachelor, and The Last Bow. Exciting, right? Well, maybe not. Chronologically speaking, The Last Bow was the final story in the Sherlock Holmes series by Conan Doyle and happens to be the story where Holmes retires. This sudden end of the series could be due to the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and Martin Freeman (Watson) have received more film offers and their schedules, including Moffat’s, have become bogged down. Not a very pleasant thought for all us Sherlock fans out there…

Even with these subtle clues, we have information that could prove otherwise. Mark Gattis, co-writer of Sherlock, had previously confirmed that The Adventure of the Empty House would be the first episode of the returning season. The storyline would confirm the survival of Holmes and his reunion with Watson, as well as the remaining threats of Moriarty.

Perhaps this means the end of our dynamic duo, but since Moffat, Cumberbatch, and Freeman have all expressed interest in continuing the series, it does give me some hope.

Though the downtime between seasons 1 and 2 was nearly 2 years, Steven Moffat (Doctor Who) ensures fans that the wait for season 3 of Sherlock won’t be “too long.” Anything over a year seems like ages to us, but for British viewers who are more accustomed to shorter seasons, the time and effort put into each episode makes for a better series.

“Get used to a bit of starvation.” Moffat says. “We’re making movies–those six films we’ve made could go in the cinema. You can’t factory produce that–it’s a different kind of show. So, when we’re good and ready–it won’t be that long–but when we’re ready, you’ll get the follow up.”

Another thing to consider is the fact that the stars of the show, Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and Martin Freeman (Watson), along with Moffat, have become hot commodities in the TV and film industry. Moffat will be busy with the return of Doctor Who and a possible sequel of Tin Tin, Cumberbatch is said to be casted as the villain in J.J. Abrams Star Trek 2, and Freeman will be featured in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, along with his Sherlock co-star Cumberbatch. Though the cast are busy with projects of their own, none have any intentions to leave. With so many projects at play, it is no wonder that the season 3 premiere is still up in the air.
