With the SAG/AFTRA and WGA strike in full swing and cancelled panels, signings, and appearances aplenty, there’s a ton of uncertainty circling around this year’s always-epic San Diego Comic-Con.

While the Hall H schedule is looking a little bare (I don’t expect to see many attendees waiting overnight this year) and some of your favourite booths (we’re still in our same old space at #3919) may not be around (it seems like for every company that pulled out, the Funko booth has grown even larger) nobody currently in San Diego really knows what the exhibit hall may look like over the next few days.

Walking around the Gaslamp District today, however, a couple of things became very clear — there are still like a billion people here (maybe more), and offsite activations appear to be back and in full swing.

We’ll be taking a look at many of this year’s offsite offerings over the next couple of days, but Shane (yep, Shane is back in San Diego for the first time since 2018) and I were lucky enough to check out Paramount’s ‘The Lodge’ in the hours before preview night officially kicked off.

The Lodge is located at the Happy Does bar (340 5th Ave), and its hours are as follows:
Wednesday, July 19 from 6pm-10pm
Thursday, July 20 – Saturday, July 23 from 12pm-10pm
Sunday, July 23 from 10am-7pm

Naturally, tickets went up awhile ago, and sold out for the entire weekend in just a few minutes — a standby line will be running through the weekend, and from some Twitter impressions a lot of people with reservations (at least for tonight) weren’t showing up so the standby line was moving at a decent pace.

The Lodge itself features a ton of small activations for a number of Paramount + offerings (small is a pretty key word here). Here’s a quick breakdown before we get into some thoughts:

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts: Visit Energon Station to replenish your energy and unleash your inner beast with some tantalizing PRIMAL BREW (cold brew) and AUTOBOT TEA (iced tea).

Good Burger 2: Munch on delicious tray pass sliders from the classic Good Burger counter.
Yellowjackets: Step inside Lottie’s serene compound, where there’s more than meets the eye. Guests will explore a path through the activation to the secrets inside, and those lucky enough to reveal the iconic antler queen will leave with their very own bespoke Yellowjackets playing cards.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Take a trip under the sea to Bikini Bottom and visit The Krusty Krab. While at the iconic restaurant, grab a seat at the boat set for an underwater selfie photo moment.

Special Ops: Lioness: Crime awaits in the CIA safe house, where guests will be asked a series of “tests” matching with one of the three female archetypes. Fans will then receive a card with a character-match write-up and tune-in info. For guests passing by, the space features a spycraft wall where consumers can discover secrets.

Star Trek: Returning by popular demand, Star Trek’s Caricature Studios welcomes guests to take a seat at one of three rock thrones where artists will sketch visitors as their own Trek character. While at each studio, guests can select from a menu of preset characteristics adding details like uniform weapons, specialty alien-race touches, skin tone, etc.

1923: Discover a hidden speakeasy where you’ll find yourself in the Silver Dollar Soda Shop. Step inside and order a glass bottled root beer or a specialty cocktail within the existing nook. With a tasty beverage in hand, guests can then take a seat in the 1923 portrait studio for a vintage-style photo moment.
CBS Sports: Reimagine the iconic CBS Sports desk with a winter twist celebrating all sports, all the time. While walking around, take a peek at the CBS Sports “Hall of Fame” memorabilia wall, including items from NFL, UEFA & NWSL (San Diego Wave FC), and play a friendly game of shuffleboard.

Ink Master: Experience a day in the classic Ink Master banquette booth while flipping through a book of airbrush tattoo options from your favorite Paramount+ shows. Stencil options from beloved Paramount+ shows include Beavis and But-Head, Spongebob, RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, and more.

Pet Sematary: Modeled after the film’s themes, guests will be invited to the Pet Sematary portrait studio for a photo moment where aftereffects will be added to invoke the dead in a beautiful yet dying environment. Post-photo, digital versions will be available for consumers to share on social media.

I loved the styling of the offsite — from the outside it totally looked like a lodge you’d find at a ski resort (complete with snowed-up trees). I definitely wondered how they’d fit so many things into an area that didn’t seem all that large, and it turns out that to do so most of the offerings were pretty tiny.

The Transformers piece amounted to a stylized mural and a counter with the aforementioned Cold Brew and Iced Tea, while the Spongebob section had a Krabby Patty themed corner and an Instax-powered photo op where you were able to sit behind the counter (I think that there was a secret here too, but it wasn’t working during our session).

Pet Semetary had a great photo op, and 1923 had its own themed cocktail and photo op area too. There were Goodburgers servers walking around serving up some tasty burgers.

The Yellowjackets area reminded me that I really need to start season two of Yellowjackets, but it we walked away

The Star Trek caricature area looked to be one of the absolute coolest memories that you could take home from SDCC, but these things take time, and as such the lineup was really long. We jumped out of line after about half an hour (half an hour of not really moving) as it seemed like it would be ages before we’d finally get through (and despite taking place on top of a chilly mountain, it was hot as hell in the room).

The Special Ops: Lioness activation was a bit of a weird one for sure. Participants sit down and are taken through three timed ‘tests’ to see if you have what it takes to join the special ops. The first test seemed to be some simple-looking (but not actually simple) riddles. The second one basically amounted to the actor being like ‘assemble this’ without any context as to what you were supposed to be assembling, while the third was akin to the online videos you see of people trying to remove a bar of gold from a small box with a hole in it. I’m not sure if the swag differed depending on how well you did on the tests, but since I was only able to finish the third (and was unreasonably stressed out about the second), I was rewarded with… a business card sized ad for Lioness.

Some cool giveaways were available for attendees — upon entry, we were given a voucher for a (Goodburger) burger and two drink tickets, as well as a retractable belt clip perfect for your SDCC bagde, and a lift-ticket inspired tag complete with a code for a free month of Paramount Plus. Around the activations you could score (naturally), the afformentioned Spongebob, 1923, and Yellowjackets photos, but you could also obtain a small jar of themed honey and playing cards in the Yellowjackets activation. For the coolest swag, you’ll need to go further than the activation itself and complete the Paramount Scavenger hunt in eight locations across the convention area.

Take a look at some of our photos from the activation below, and let us know if you make it to The Lodge!

Pros:

+ Tasty snacks and sips (that 1923 cocktail was delish).
+ One location showing off a lot of fun properties.
+ The Yellowjackets swag felt very appropriate and is absolutely a keeper.
+ A few neat secrets around for those with an eye for detail.
+ If you’ve got the patience, the Star Trek caricature looked like an amazing take home.
+ A free month of Paramount Plus if you don’t already subscribe (and come on, Survivor is on there).

Cons:

– The Lioness activation was unclear and stressful and gave you a business card.
– Only the fastest and/or most patient fans are walking out with caricatures — timed slots have a 50 minute cap on the whole experience so it can be reset for the next group.
– If you’re a swag hunter, the best merch is locked away behind the Paramount Passport.
– If you’re a sports fan, the sports activation seemed to amount to some football helmets and a shuffleboard table.

Paramount Television is currently putting together a TV series project based on Galaxy Quest, the 1999 cult sci-fi movie about the cast of long cancelled cult sci-fi TV show! Keeping up?

In Galaxy Quest, the cast of the show reluctantly become real space heroes when they are accidentally transported to a spaceship and become responsible for saving an alien nation. The film starred Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub and Sam Rockwell. The film’s writer (Robert Gordon), director (Dean Parisot) and producer (Mark Johnson) are all involved in the project as potential executive producers, with Gordon penning the script.

Is there room in your crowded TV schedules for a show like this? Let us know in the comments below.

This week film journalism arguably became (one of, let’s not get carried away) the most important subject in the national conversation. It has been a hell of a week, from the surreal to the maddening, and it’s hard to look at any movie news without getting a bit frustrated at the state of affairs. But Deadline just reported something that has made my heart sing: Justin Lin, currently directing True Detective season two but renowned for every Fast & Furious film since Tokyo Drift will helm  Star Trek 3.

Almost everything about this is awesome.

From Deadline:

He is available because he was going to direct the sequel to The Bourne Legacy spinoff with Jeremy Renner, but that film got postponed when Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass agreed to do another installment of The Bourne Identity, which Universal wants to come first. Lin was courted to return to the Fast & Furious franchise to do a multi-part finale, but I am not sure whether that will be in the cards in light of the Star Trek job. Orci remains a producer on the Star Trek film.

Where do I begin with my excitement? I love the Fast & Furious movies. It’s a wildly misunderstood series, mistaken for something to leave on the TV while you do yard work or chores. But it’s not! It is, without pretense, the most fun and ever-changing blockbuster franchise that warps your perception of what these films are all about with each installment. The action pieces are brilliantly put-together, and the central characters ooze charm. You want to be invited to their barbecues.

But what of Lin? Thought to be a dying series after 2 Fast 2 Furious, Lin transformed the Fast movies starting with Tokyo Drift, also a totally misunderstood movie. It comes off as the most direct-to-DVD of the entire franchise, but it’s a wonderful film and a door to a whole other world that exists in the crazy Fast universe. Had Lin stopped at Tokyo Drift his selection to direct Star Trek 3 would still be in question, even I would admit. But it was the crazy-awesome Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6 that legitimizes Lin as the guy to do Star Trek 3. Next to The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, both Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6 are expert demonstrations on ensemble action blockbusters. How do you make a compelling action movie with a wide cast of characters? If you’re an aspiring creative, take notes and watch the last two Fast movies. How Lin managed to make goofs driving willy-nilly compelling and visceral is outstanding.

Lastly, on the subject of ethnicity. It’s incredible, at least to me, that the Fast series, one of Hollywood’s leading franchises, has largely been directed by people of color. Roberto Orci is Latino, but without a proven track record as director it was hard to get excited for him as a creative. Lin, one of the top contenders of blockbuster filmmaking, has without a doubt proved he can do a film as massive as Star Trek, and his choosing honors Star Trek and sci-fi in general from their own lessons in progressive social politics. On that note, I urge you to watch Justin Lin’s Better Luck Tomorrow, an excellent film that can kickstart any conversation about Asian-Americans and the bullshit “model minority.”

Even if that’s not your jive, come on, the dude who made the best episode of Community is now doing Star Trek. Get hyped.

Briefly: Well, Jonathan Liebsman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles turned out way better than we expected it to be (it was so much fun), and Paramount isn’t nearly finished promoting it yet (and a sequel has already been announced).

The studio has launched an incredible art moment called ‘The Legend of the Yokai.’ The exhibition explores the origins of our heroes, and features over 30 amazing artists from 16 different countries. Plenty of amazing pieces are already available for viewing on the Legend of the Yokai’s official website, and Geekscape is very excited to be exclusively debuting Stephane Blanquet’s incredible piece. Before we reveal it, you should definitely check out the trailer for the exhibition:

As Paramount describes, the exhibition “tells the epic tale of a village over-run by an evil warlord and his army of demon monsters. When all hope seems lost, the wishes of an innocent girl summon forth the heroic Kappa, who abide by the pillars of honour, courage, wisdom and brotherhood, fighting side-by-side to vanquish this fearsome evil.”

The site shows off some incredible pieces based on each of these ideals, and Stephane’s abstract piece is definitely one of my favourites. Born in 1973 near Paris, where he lives and works, Stéphane Blanquet is a multi-talented artist and a prolific figure of the French art scene since the beginning of the 1990s with: Installations, mix-media artworks, sculptures, mural paintings and urban furniture, performances, music, theatre (scenography and play writing), animation movies, alternative graphics, comics, publishing, etc. His work has been shown around the world and twice very successfully at the Singapore Art museum. (Latest show in Singapore: 100,000 visitors). With many upcoming projects, in Europe, Asia and US, Blanquet in on the way of becoming a key artist on the contemporary art world scene.

Take a look at Stephane’s piece below (click for full-size), and be sure to keep scrolling for an amazing behind-the-scenes look at its creation.

StephaneFull

The art is incredibly complex. Take a behind-the-scenes look at the artwork below and you’ll be amazed by the amount of detail and layering hidden inside.

Pretty amazing, huh? Again, be sure to head to the exhibition’s official website for much more!

Briefly: There’s some crazy talent attached to this one!

Chop Shop centers on Porter (John Bregar), a car thief recently released from a five year stint in prison, who finds himself struggling to rekindle a relationship with his former girlfriend Sofia (Ana Ayora) and their five-year old son he hardly knows. Porter soon reconnects with his old partner in crime Caine (Rene Moran), who’s volatile and aggressive nature puts him at odds against Porter’s new life. Torn between family and friendships, Porter faces the most difficult decision of his life and realizes that to change his future he might have to relive his past.

The excellent 22-minute long premiere episode of the Machinima series hit the web earlier today. The series is six-episodes long, and a new chapter will release each Friday.

Elliott Lester (Blitz) directs the Bandito Brothers (Act Of Valor) and Joshua Weinstock produced series, alongside writers Josh Baizer and Marshall Johnson (Mortal Kombat: Legacy).  Series stars John Bregar (Being HumanKick Ass 2The Mentalist), Rene Moran (ShamelessLie to MeSwitched at Birth), Ana Ayora (Marley & MeCastle), and acclaimed actor Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment DayThe SopranosThe X-FilesTrue Blood).

From releases like Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist to Mortal Kombat: Legacy and now Chop Shop, I can’t wait to see what’s next from these guys! Take a look at the first episode of Chop Shop below, and let us know what you think!

Briefly: With just over a month to go until Transformers: Age of Extinction hits theatres, Paramount has finally unwrapped more of the film’s sure-to-be-coherent plot. They’ve kept things fairly under wraps so far, so it’s nice to actually learn a bit about the film before it releases.

I’ve hated on the film a lot so far, but this new preview actually makes it look like a pretty fun time. Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think! Transformers: Age of Extinction hits theatres on June 27th!

Briefly: We’re just a few more weeks away from Transformers: Age Of Extinction‘s big release, and Paramount has just debuted a few new stills from the film.

We’ve got shots of both Bumblebee and Optimus Prime, and that shot of Prime on his knees looks pretty badass. I’m not overly excited for the film (I quit the series after the first), but these shots certainly look cool.

Take a look at the images below, and let us know what you think. Transformers: Age of Extinction hits theatres on June 27th!

Briefly: Following the IMAX poster from a few weeks back, Paramount has debuted a new one-sheet for this Summer’s Transformers: Age of Extinction.

The image looks to feature the same gigantic spaceship as the IMAX poster did, but instead of new character Lockdown looking cool and walking away calmly, we have human stars Mark Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz running for their lives.

Take a look at the poster below, watch the trailer here if you haven’t, and be sure to let us know if you’re looking forward to the film. Transformers: Age of Extinction releases on June 27th.

Briefly: The next Ghostbusters is finally, finally, finally happening… soon.

Deadline reports that Sony Pictures is set to start production of the film in early 2015, and that following the death of Harold RamisGhostbusters and Ghostbusters II director Ivan Reitman has decided not to direct the feature. Instead, he and Sony Pictures chairman Amy Pascal will hunt for a new director for the film.

In speaking to Deadline, Reitman stated that “There has been all kinds of stuff, unofficially written aboutGhostbusters. I’ve been reading things online for about four years, speculation on who’s writing, what they’re writing, who’s in it, who we will use, and who’s directing. We’d decided not to comment up till now, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do, and it was never clear what Bill was going to do. A lot of things happened in the last few months, the most significant of which was the passing of Harold, who was a very good friend who was extraordinarily influential in my career. We did five movies together including both Ghostbusters.”

You can head to Deadline for Reitman’s full statement, but be sure to let us know who you would like to see direct the film. Can you believe that after all of these years, we’re going to get another Ghostbusters?

We at Geekscape have many a love; two of those are Transformers and badass theatrical posters. Last week we showed you the very mery Wahlberg character poster. Well now we got you all a brand new one.

Paramount just released this awesome looking poster for the IMAX release of Transformers: Age of Extinction. It features the new character Lockdown, the hot Aventador changing bounty hunter.

So scapists, who out there is excited for Transformers 4? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Briefly: Seven new stills for Transformers: Age of Extinction have made their way online. The images don’t feature a lot of robots, but do feature a lot of good-looking people being good-looking.

Are you looking forward to the film? I haven’t see a Transformers movie since the original (no, not the good original, the live-action one), and as such I can’t say I’m looking forward to this one. In any case, take a look at the stills below, and let us know what you think! Transformers: Age of Extinction hits theatres on June 27th, 2014!

Briefly: We know the official title (though still no plot details), we’ve seen plenty of fancy cars, and now we have our first official image of some of Transformers: Age of Extinction‘s human cast!

Michael Bay himself debuted the photo earlier today, which depicts Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor on the set of the highly anticipated film.

As I’ve said before, I hated the first Transformers, and haven’t seen either Revenge of the Fallen or Dark of the MoonAge of Extinction, however, looks to be shaping up pretty nicely. With a cast including Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, and Kelsey Grammar among others, this one may be hard for me to avoid!

With Star Trek Into Darkness  hitting theaters later this summer, it’s easy to get aboard the Star Trek hype train. If you’ve seen the advertisements for this game, you’ll know the idea of a co-op adventure with Spock and Kirk in the spotlight sounds great, only, it’s not so great when you boot it up. And don’t worry, this is a non-spoliery review.

Don’t get me wrong, this game has a lot of things going for it. To start off, the game features voices the original (2009) cast including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Anton Yelchin. This, coupled with the the story makes the game feel immersive.

The game’s story is solid. Players will get to delve deeper into the universe and find out what’s become of Vulcans post world destruction. Without giving too much away, I think any trekkies who are fine with the way the universe is going now will like this game’s story.

It’s important to note that this game was built from the ground up with cooperative gameplay as its focal point. This game should only be played with a friend. Trust me, I decided to play a chapter by myself and AI Spock just isn’t that fun. Still, if you don’t have any friends, you are able to order Spock or Kirk, depending on who you’re playing as, to attack enemies or move to a position. There are also parts of the game that relies heavily on teamwork. It can be frustrating because of what the game demands, but if you and your partner are in the same room and have had a relatively good day so far, you should be able to get through it.

st4

The game’s mechanics and gameplay aren’t to the caliber most of us would desire  The game is a 3rd person shooter which utilizes a cover system. Players have the option to run and gun or point in shoot. The game will also present various obstacles that involve jumping, climbing, and hacking.

st2
Hacking appears in three different forms throughout the games, two of which can be done by just one player. The hacking in the game is little more than a mini-game, just as it should be. There are parts of the game which requires both players to match a pair of sine waves.

st6

Players have health and shields. If one of you gets downed, the other can come over and help you back up. There are parts of each mission that allows players to heal and refill on ammunition Both Spock and Kirk have their own attributes that allow players to have specialties. For example, Spock has an ability that allows him to hack things automatically rather than solve a puzzle. Kirk can help Spock up with this tricorder without actually having to stand over him. Players can level up their attributes by killing baddies or scanning various glowing objects with their tricorders.

st

Another plus can be found within the weapon options presented to players. Both Spock and Kirk have different starting weapons that are similar. Both also have the option to augment when leveling up. This starting weapon will always be in your arsenal and never runs out of ammo. Players are also treated to the variations of basic weapons such as a rifle, SMG, and shotgun. Each weapon has a secondary fire mode that provides strategic values depending on what weapon you’re equipped with.

st5

The level design is linear but does suffer form instances where gamers may have absolutely no idea where to go. This instances are brief and made short thanks to the handy dandy tricorder.

Star Trek: The Video Game leaves a lot to be desired. This is partly due to the amount of potential the game had with the story’s award-winning writer, Marianne Krawczyk, and the cast of actors who lent their voices. There are still numerous bugs that, while not game-ending, cause a nuisance. If you’re solely interested in picking up a co-op oriented game, I’d wait till this drops down in price significantly. If you’re a trekkie looking for a good video game adaptation, have a lot of patience and forgiveness in your heart, still wait for a price drop. If you MUST play this game, please, grab a human partner who’s willing to complete the game with you. I personally found this game to be better with a partner in the same room.

Star Trek: The Video Game is available now on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

Publishers: Paramount Pictures & Namco Bandai Games

Developer: Digital Extremes

We’re getting closer to the film’s release date and Paramount Pictures have released another brand new clip from J.J. Abram Star Trek Into Darkness. This new clip titled “I Allow It” features a little chat between Kirk and “John Harrison”.

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Star Trek Into Darkness hit theaters May 17, 2013

Michael Bay is currently doing the press rounds for Pain & Gain and during an interview with Moviefone also discussed two of his upcoming projects as well. A rumor spread a short while back that the upcoming Jonathan Liebesman directed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, which Bay is producing, would see the four main characters re-invented as an alien race. During the interview Bay commented on the rumor and explained just what exactly is going to be alien in the film:

There was that quote saying that we’re making [the Ninja Turtles as] aliens. We’re not. It’s the ooze! It’s from the original source material. These are from the original writers, and I never went out to correct myself in the press. I do listen to the fans and I do want this to be authentic. I think they’re going to be really happy with this movie. When I see the digital stuff, the turtles look great. But I’m getting away from your question. Your question was…

Bay then switched gears to Transformers 4 and spoke about starting the franchise as well as protecting the brand:

See, I was not a fan of Transformers [at first]. Hasbro was talking about giving me a whole Transformers story, and I’m like, “If I can do this really real. If I can make them believable, I think I could have something here.” I’m not a Hollywood guy. My friends are normal guys. I’ve got this guy from Texas. He’s like, “Mike, that “Transformers” [movie] seems like a dumb idea.” And I’m like, “Yeah, I know, but just give it a second.” And then I showed him the shot of the Scorponoks jumping out of the sand with Tyrese [Gibson] running. He saw that image and he went, “I see what you’re doing.” You’ll always have haters, but the last movie? One-hundred-twenty million people saw that movie. There’s still a lot of fans of that franchise. And I’m a huge Transformers fan now, and I protect that brand.

On what Bay set out to do with the films and the fanboy backlash:

[The film] was also to make non-Transformer fans into Transformer fans. I think it was good coming from that perspective that it wasn’t a “fanboy” movie.

Bay then discussed “re-designing” the franchise for the next trilogy and keeping things fresh:

You know there are a couple of historians of Transformers. I would do my designs of the robots and they’re like, “What if you just add a little bit more ears to Optimus?” But they’re really hands off. We’ve redesigned them in “Transformers 4,” and there’s some really cool sh*t in it. I’m literally redesigning every character, top to bottom. There’s a reason why they’re redesigned, but it’s also to keep it new and fresh to me. I think the fans will appreciate some of this new stuff we have in the movie and some of the new characters.

On what made him want to return for the fourth film after saying the third was his last:

Yeah, and this is literally a true story. I went to the [Transformers] ride in Universal, and there’s a two-and-a-half-hour line, and you just see all these kids — it’s the most popular ride they’ve had since Jurassic Park — and I’m like… It’s hard to let go of your franchise. You don’t want someone to f*ck it up. So I at least wanted to set it up on some good footing. Because you’re going to get a different kind of director [who is] not going to want to follow in my footsteps. Directors feel very territorial. So they’re going to go to a more inexperienced director. It’s just the way Hollywood works. And I’m thinking, “God, so I’ll redesign it, set it up… Someone’s gonna f*ck this up. This is way too big of a thing.” And I’m looking at all these kids and I’m like, “F*ck, I gotta do one more.” And then I brought Mark [Wahlberg] into it. So now we’ve got a movie star, we’ve got full redesigns. At least it’ll be on good footing.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is set to hit theaters set to hit theaters June 6th, 2014 with Transformers 4 set to follow on June 14, 2014.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. Ever since the high definition restoration of Star Trek: The Next Generation was announced last year for Blu-ray, the show’s third season was the one all the fans have really been waiting for. Year three of TNG was the “now we’re cookin’ with gas” season, where the show finally stepped out of the shadow of the original Star Trek, and became a legitimate pop culture phenomenon of its own. By the time the season came to its end, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard was assimilated by the Borg in Trek’s first ever cliffhanger, arguments like “is Picard a better Captain than Kirk?” seemed like relics of the past. TNG had finally carved its own niche.

Star Trek: The Next Generation had a rough first two seasons creatively…and that’s kind of putting it mildly. Although the show was a ratings hit from day one, TNG had serious creative problems from the get go. Writers and producers came and went, and two original cast members left early on; Denise Crosby (Lt. Tasha Yar) left at the end of season one, and Gates McFadden (Dr. Beverly Crusher) was fired around the same time. The 1988 writer’s strike cut down the number of episodes in season two, and by the end of that particular season, the show’s replacement chief medical officer (Diana Muldaur)  had departed the series as well. The Next Generation wasn’t a show that was living up to its premise or its cast, and by the end of the second season, TNG was a series in crisis.

Enter Michael Piller, the series’ new show runner and head writer. Piller was in charge of the writing staff on season three, and he made two massive changes to the way the show was run that changed the series’ fortunes forever. First, he made a declaration that from now on, the series would shift away from “alien of the week” or “guest star of the week”,  and focus on character, first and foremost. Any given episode would be a Data episode, or a Worf episode, or Picard episode, but they all had to be focused on one of the series’ main characters and their emotional journey, and not just the moral quandary or “lesson” of the week.

Secondly, Piller instituted an open door policy in regards to script submissions, which meant fans and amateur screenwriters could send their scripts to Paramount in hopes of catching their big break. Most of the scripts ended up in what they called the “slush pile,” with most never to be used. But the cream rose to the top, as within that pile were some true gems. Some fan favorite episodes that season began as fan submissions. Add to that a new director of photography, Marvin Rush, who gave the show a more lush, filmic look, sleek new uniforms for the crew and a brand new opening credits sequence, and from the first episode that year, Star Trek: The Next Generation season three was almost like a soft reboot that the entire series needed. And it paid off, in spades.

Now these episodes are finally being released on a six-disc Blu-ray set from CBS Home Video, and if you consider yourself a Trek fan at all, I highly recommend going on Amazon or hitting Best Buy or wherever on April 30th when this puppy is released. Skip the first two seasons if you must, but this particular set belongs on your shelf.

The Episodes

The original Star Trek had their best year from a creative standpoint during their first season on the air. By the time they reached their third season, having barely made it back on the airwaves, and with their budget slashed in half, the quality of the show went down the drain. In that third and final year, the show’s cancellation was something of a mercy killing. Next Generation had the opposite problem–after two years of struggling, the show came together in year three, and because of that, they boldly went where the previous Trek never did; into a fourth season. And a fifth, and sixth, and so on.

After struggling for so long, TNG found its groove, and most of the season three episodes range from good to great. In fact, unlike most other seasons of the show that have some obvious stinkers, I can only think of one out of 26 episodes in season three that would really qualify as bad in any way (and for the record, that episode is Menage a Troi, a “comedic” episode focusing on Deanna Troi’s mother. Every season had one of these Mrs. Troi episodes, and 90% of them were terrible. This one is no different.)  But the rest of the twenty five episodes on this Blu-ray set are the cream of the crop for this series. Episodes like The Offspring, Sins of the Father, The Bonding, Who Watches the Watchers, Tin Man, Hollow Pursuits, Sarek, and most especially Yesterday’s Enterprise and The Best of Both Worlds, are among the very best episodes of the show’s entire seven season run.

The Restoration

The team at CBS Digital has once again done an astonishing job on the HD restoration of the series, surpassing their work on season one. As someone who has seen these episodes dozens of times over the past twenty plus years, it is still amazing to see them in such jaw dropping clarity. In many ways, I feel like I’m watching them for the first time. One could never really see all the details on the sets, or the costumes, or the model work before in such great detail, and it is a true testament to everyone involved just how well everything holds up to the unforgiving clarity of high definition. The folks at CBS Digital have set the standard for how one restores classic television shows from before the high-def era for modern audiences, specifically those shot on 35mm film, but edited on video tape. If you’re only used to watching the show the old way, or in re-runs on Sci-Fi Channel or BBC America, then you’ve never seen the show. Because of this restoration the colors and details pop like never before, and the show looks like it was shot yesterday, not twenty three years ago.

The Extras

Once again, the team at CBS, spearheaded by Robert Meyer Burnett and Roger Lay Jr, have created the definitive look back at this seminal series with various behind-the-scenes documentaries. There are two all-new hour length documentaries; the first is Inside The Writer’s Room; hosted and moderated by Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane, himself a massive Next Gen geek. This feature reunites four of the writers from the glory days of the show, Ronald D. Moore, Brannon Braga, Rene Echevarria and Naren Shankar. This feature is pretty loosey-goosey in terms of how it is structured, but it’s a blast to watch these four just get together in a room and shoot the shit about the glory days of the Trek franchise. Everyone is pretty candid about not only the good times, but also the bad times, and some of the crappier episodes they produced (they had to churn out 26 of these in a nine month period every year…they’re not all gonna be classics people.) All four of these guys have gone on to long careers in the television business, but it is obvious how much they all still love Trek and look back fondly on that part of their lives.

The other main documentary Resistance is Futile: Assimilating the Next Generation, is split into three parts- Biological Distinctiveness, Technological Distinctiveness, and The Collective. This covers the show’s transition is season three from a troubled show looking to find its voice, into a pop culture phenomenon by the end of that year. Co-executive producer Ira Steven Behr is mainly featured in this documentary above most of the other writers, and has great stories to tell, mostly about butting heads with the other series main producers Rick Berman and Michael Piller (an ailing Gene Roddenberry was still in the mix at this point as well, although most of his crazier suggestions were mostly ignored by just about everyone, kind of like everyone’s crazy ol’ grandpa.) Ira Behr was only on staff for that third seasons, and is pretty candid about the show being hell to work on at the time.  In his words, no one back then knew they were in the middle of the show’s creative renaissance, they were all just trying to make it from week to week and not go totally crazy. And there were many times were they came this close to a staff mutiny, especially when dealing with the less than warm and cuddly Michael Piller.

There are other great features here too, including four audio commentaries for some of the most beloved episodes of the season The Bonding, Yesterday’s Enterprise, The Offspring and Sins of the Father. Three of these feature Ronald D. Moore, who has some particularly funny stories to tell about his very first gig in Hollywood, long before he was the much lauded creator of the new Battlestar Galactica. Once upon a time, he was the guy who happily came in to work on holidays and brought everyone donuts, mostly afraid that someone on staff would realize he was only hired there on a week-to-week basis, and some higher-up would figure it out and fire him.

A fifteen minutes tribute to the late Michael Piller is included here as well. Piller of course steered the course of the show that third season, and stayed a part of the Trek family throughout the rest of Next Gen, co-created Deep Space Nine and Voyager, and stayed with the television franchise all the way until the second season of Voyager. He also wrote Star Trek: Insurrection. Sadly, he died of cancer in 2005. Interviews with the former writing staff and his own wife and son are showcased here, a fitting tribute for a man for whom the Trek franchise owes its continued existence to. While it is clear that his writing staff often butt heads with him, it is clear that just like a stern dad that pissed them all off on occasion, they all still loved the hell outta the guy, and miss him dearly.

Rounding out the extras are an HD Gag Reel, and several scenes with the late actor David Rappaport (Time Bandits) from the episode The Most Toys. He originally played the villain in that episode, Kivas Fajo, but only a few scenes of his were shot due to a suicide attempt he made during the time he was making the episode. (He was replaced by actor Saul Rubinek.) Not long after he was replaced, he succeeded in killing himself, but during the restoration of the episodes for HD, his footage he did film was discovered, and is included here–a rare glimpse into what might have been. An all the special features from the old DVD sets are included here as well, in standard definition of course. No stone was left uncovered.

But WAIT! That’s Not All!

Also on April 30th, CBS Home Video is also releasing a special stand alone release of The Best of Both Worlds two part episode, featuring the famous Borg cliffhanger from season three, and the second part from the as-yet released season four, edited together as one epic movie. This single disc release has its own series of extras, unique to this release, including a gag reel, an audio commentary (not on the season three set, I might add) and a behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of this now classic two-parter. Of course, some fans might feel it’s a cash grab, and truth be told,  it kind of is. But what self respecting Trek nerd doesn’t want The Best of Both Worlds: The Movie on their shelf? You know you’ll watch it more often than most of the Next Generation feature films.

Overall Rating For Both Releases: A

CBS Digital has gone above and beyond the call of duty for these Blu-ray restorations, and the discs show just how much TLC was put into these releases. The work from everyone involved here has been nothing short of amazing. I simply can’t wait for seasons 4-7, and The Prophets willing, Deep Space Nine in the not-too-distant future. Both Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 3 and The Best of Both Worlds are available everywhere April 30th, 2013, and are highly recommended.

Wow. This trailer is flat out amazing.

Paramount has just debuted a new (and final) theatrical trailer for JJ Abrams wildly anticipated Star Trek Into Darkness. The preview doesn’t feature much new footage, but the simple way that everything is cut together makes for an emotional 2.5 minutes. It’s goosebump inducing, really.

Marketing for Star Trek Into Darkness is now in full force. Following a new poster just two days ago (and a batch of high-res images yesterday), Paramount has released a cool new motion poster for the film. We haven’t been getting much news regarding the Michael Bay produced and Jonathon Liebesman directed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, minus learning that Megan Fox will be playing April O’Neil in the film and that filming will begin in April. Paramount Pictures have announced that the semi-controversial reboot has been pushed back three weeks after the original release date of May 16th, 2014.

The film will now be hitting theaters June 6th, 2014. This isn’t a major delay by any means and probably to avoid competition with Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Legendary’s Godzilla (which was set to open the same weekend). Filming on the project is set to begin very soon and we should begin learning even more regarding the cast over the next month or two.

JOE: RETALIATION” in IMAX 3D, RealD 3D and digital 3D theaters in advance of Paramount and MGM’s “HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS.”

This first-look at the film will play across the globe beginning January 24th and run throughout “HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTER’S” theatrical engagement.

Based on the best-selling HASBRO characters, this follow-up to the 2009 release of “G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA,” which grossed more than $300 million worldwide, is di Bonaventura production and is presented by Paramount Pictures, MGM and Skydance Productions, in association with Hasbro.

In this sequel, the G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra, they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence. The film stars D.J. Cotrona, Byung-hun Lee, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce, Ray Stevenson, Elodie Yung, Channing Tatum with Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson. Directed by Jon M. Chu, and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Brian Goldner of Hasbro, from a screenplay by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick, based on Hasbro’s G.I. Joe® characters.

“G.I. JOE: RETALIATION” is in theaters everywhere in the UK and Ireland on March 27th, 2013.

“HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS” stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as Hansel and Gretel, who, after getting a taste for blood as children, become the ultimate vigilantes, hell bent on retribution. Now, unbeknownst to them, Hansel and Gretel have become the hunted, and must face an evil far greater than witches… their past. In addition to Renner and Arterton, the film stars Famke Janssen and Peter Stormare. Written and directed by Tommy Wirkola and produced by Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Kevin Messick and Beau Flynn.

“HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS” opens in the UK and Ireland on the 27th of February.

After a new red band trailer earlier this week, Paramount has now treated us to two clips of the upcoming Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.

The film stars Jeremy Renner (The Avengers) and Gemma Arterton (Prince of Persia, Clash of the Titans) as the brother and sister duo. 15 years after their well documented incident, they’ve become reputable bounty hunters of certain “witchly” beings. It certainly sounds like an interesting twist of the classic tale, and from the footage released so far, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters looks as though it could almost (almost) be a spiritual successor to Terry Gilliam’s The Brothers Grimm.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters hits theatres on January 25th. Will you be checking it out?

Tom Cruise is a busy man these days. He’s got Jack Reacher and Oblivion making their way into theaters and the actor is currently shooting the adaptation of the manga, All You Need Is Kill and expected to soon shoot both the sequel to Top Gun as well as a new Mission Impossible.

Well, add one more onto his list for because Cruise has signed to star in Our Name Is Adam. With a script written by T.S. Nowlin, the film “will have Tom Cruise play an astronaut who travels back in time and works with his younger self.” The film has previously been described as Back to The Future-ish. After the success of Looper, should we expect a whole slew of new time travel movies to be hitting theaters?

I’ve been a big fan of the Paranormal Activity series up to this point. The first film was an incredible success story that you don’t get to hear too often these days: Oren Peli crafted the first film with a few friends in his own house, and after a few years of unsuccessfully trying to sell the finished product, Paramount would pick up the $15,000 picture which would gross nearly 200 million. The sequels would go on to mostly build on that success, and weave a clever tale of haunting that spanned the entirety of the first three films.

The first movie managed to feel like a breath of fresh air in the crowded horror genre. It would go on to launch the “found footage” craze that nearly every film seems to take on these days (other films used the style first of course, but many people seem to forget that fact). Paranormal Activity was a simple story of a haunted house (or so it would seem) and its living inhabitants, that would be told with an incredible amount of polish. Just as Jaws made moviegoers afraid to step into the ocean, Paranormal Activity made people afraid of their own homes. I personally know some folks who felt the need to sleep with their lights on for days after seeing the first film.

I was equally as impressed with Paranormal Activity 2. Instead of the forced perspective of the single camera first film, the sequel managed to get cameras all over the house and have it make sense. The plot managed to coherently span from long before the first film would have started, to just after it ended. It also managed to expand on the mythology introduced in Paranormal Activity in a way that felt completely natural, and arguably in a way that even improved the plot of the first film.

Paranormal Activity 3 would turn back the clock to 1988, and show us just how all the activity began. Again, this sequel expanded on the plot and mythology of the first two films, and made the series most powerful when thought of as a whole. It also revolved around children, which added at least a few levels to the creepiness of the picture.

This is where I feel like Paranormal Activity 4 takes its first misstep. The film opens with a quick recap of the end of the second film before jumping ahead 5 years (to 2011), and introducing us to a new, unrelated family. This immediately breaks a lot of the connection to the first few films. I don’t really know how it could be done differently, seeing as Kristi died and the end of the second movie, but it simply doesn’t work for me here. We’re introduced to a slew of new characters that really have nothing to do with the last ones, and we’re expected to care about them before shit starts to go down. The biggest problem with the film is just that: I don’t care. In all cases, Paranormal Activity 4 feels more like an uninspired spin-off than any sort of sequel.

Our main character, a new family’s teenage daughter.

The plot of this fourth film has also taken a turn for the worse. Katie (from the other movies) and her “son” Robbie live across the street from this new family. Katie (somehow with a new identity as you’d think the police would be after her) ends up being taken to the hospital, and as Robbie has no other family, is set to spend a few nights in this new house. As in the second film, our main character falls to the family’s teenage daughter. She happens to have an annoying-as-hell boyfriend who happens to record her sleeping via Skype (weird as hell, right?), when he sees something odd. The youngsters determine that they want eyes all around the house to check for any other weird happenings, before realizing that Robbie seems to be the source of them. Instead of security camera footage or old home movies, the feeds we’ll be looking at are those of all the many computers in the house. I’m afraid that I simply couldn’t suspend my disbelief here. The video feeds are way too high quality to be coming from these computer webcams, and magically these hard drives never seem to fill up despite these videos recording 24/7. There are also numerous scenes in the film where the computers are most definitely sleeping, as in you can audibly hear them waking up, and yet they’ve managed to keep recording the entire time.

Kinect comes up CONSTANTLY

The real star of Paranormal Activity 4 seems to be the fucking Microsoft Kinect system. Boyfriend Ben introduces early on that the Kinect shows cool looking tracking dots all over the room when viewed through a camera’s infrared mode. Somehow Ben’s hacking skills get the Kinect recording constant video too, and the film returns to this disco-looking room for a huge amount of the scares that it tries to throw at you. Lame as hell, and an almost laughably impossible situation. There’s even a scene that insinuates that the freaking kid was playing Kinect with the ghost…

The Blu-Ray casing should feature this sticker.

For me, the only real saving grace in the film is its conclusion. The Paranormal Activity franchise always manages to do endings extremely well, and the fourth film is no exception. The ending was creepy as hell and definitely made me jump more than once. This also left me feeling slightly more positive when the credits began to roll, though that likely was just because the movie was over. It also doesn’t really leave much setup for another sequel as the other films have, so I really wonder where they’ll end up going with the franchise.

Again, I was a big fan of the series, and very impressed at the way the creators managed to weave the first three films together and have everything make sense. Paranormal Activity 4 forgoes all of that, and instead introduces a lame plot, with lame characters, and scares that by now we’ve seen multiple times (how many times can we be terrified at a slightly moving door).

Paranormal Activity 4 is by far the worst film in the series. Hopefully the inevitable fifth film can bring back the things that this one was lacking (nearly everything). In any case, I know I’ll be going into the next one with caution.

Paranormal Activity 4 scores an Kinect Ready 1.5/5.

In any case, let us know what you thought of the film if you end up seeing it!

Well, it looks like Ghostbusters 3 will finally start shooting next year after spending plenty of time in what appeared to be a major development hell. Honestly, I was pretty sure the movie would never even see the light of day. Deadline reported on Paramount putting director Ivan Reitman’s Draft Day in turnaround. But also hidden inside the article there’s a little something interesting to take note of:

“Paramount chose not to make it in the small window that Reitman has before he is expected to finally get the long-gestating Ghostbusters reboot in front of the cameras next summer for Sony Pictures (sans Bill Murray). … It would be tough to find room to squeeze in the football film and get done before Reitman goes back to Ghostbusters duty. Paramount insiders tell me that if the film can’t happen in this nearly impossibly short window, the studio could simply hang on to Draft Day, and make it after Reitman and Costner finish their obligations.”

Well, now that they’ve finally given up on Bill Murray it appears that the long talked about movie will finally begin getting underway. Does Sony have a date planned for the threequel? Should we also expect to hear some casting soon? Well, maybe we should wait until they officially announce this one to get too excited here.
