Doug Liman returns with his second offering of 2017, re-teaming with his former Edge of Tomorrow star, Tom Cruise, in the wild true story of a commercial airline pilot-turned-CIA recon gatherer. American Made plays to a similar tone that we’ve witnessed on many occasions, shedding its light on the notorious Medellin drug cartel and leader Pablo Escobar. This aura of familiarity and a complete disregard for character building haunt Liman’s latest and have us pining for the level of success he showed early in his career with hits like The Bourne Identity and Swingers.

After growing tired of the monotony involved in his everyday life as a commercial pilot for TWA in the late 70s, a rare opportunity falls in the lap of Barry Seal (Tom Cruise) when he’s recruited by the CIA to fly recon missions in South and Central America. Barry’s thirst for adventure proves reckless when he finds himself immersed in a cocaine smuggling scheme under the behest of ruthless dealer Pablo Escobar. With all sorts of government agencies on his trail and danger certainly looming, Barry puts everything at risk when he makes a compromising decision that places him and his loved ones in grave danger.

Eerily reminiscent of Ted Demme’s 2001 cult classic, BlowAmerican Made suffers from what can only be described as an apparent egotistical grandstanding from leading star Tom Cruise. You’d be hard-pressed to find any extended period of time without Cruise’s long, flowy locks and devilish grin plastered across the screen. Sadly, the film focuses exclusively on Barry Seal, and its failure to properly address the impacts of Barry’s decisions on everyone else in his life through an adequate development of side characters proves detrimental. Barry’s family, most notably, is nothing more than a silhouette to Cruise’s demanding character. But despite this glaring weakness and unforgivable oversight to the film, American Made still manages to attract an audience with an energetic and amusingly tragic story. As Barry continues to fall deeper into his corrupt world of drug trafficking and money laundering, its like watching a car crash develop, where you refuse to look away for fear of missing the most destructive moment of impact. Cruise isn’t at his best but he certainly remains capable of carrying a film, even if we’re forced to take him in overflowing doses. But for as engaging and consuming as American Made‘s story allows it be, you can’t help but feel like Liman should have accomplished so much more.

‘The Mummy’ opening this weekend is a big tub of greasy popcorn fun starring Tom Cruise. This new take on the classic tale is filled with some twists and revamping of the core story.

Whether you are intricately aware of the original Universal Mummy films or the later ones starring Brendan Fraser this foray earnestly tries to incorporate new story elements including a female mummy, and Cruise playing a character with questionable morals.

Sidekick to Cruise is “New Girl” star, Jake Johnson who brings an excellent amount of levity to the story that seems to break up some of the action and dark scenes with solid laugh out loud moments that mostly work even when the dialogue gets cheesy. His character is often the voice of reason even when Cruise’s wants to go off the deep end.

In an attempt to provide context and avoid one and two dimensional characters ‘The Mummy” has two prologues which is kind of different but smart considering this is an action led narrative. Both mini stories do help establish Russell Crowe’s surprising character, but more importantly, gives motivation for Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella) as she becomes a mummy for crimes she committed.  Unfortunately, even with these added character prologues, both still rise to just being two dimensional.

While Admanet’s motivation is clearly set on power we don’t get to see much else of what makes her tick. To be a great villain a story needs to show more depth and this is one of the reasons “The Mummy” is more fluff than substance. In the same vein, is Russell Crowe’s character (intentionally leaving out his name). He’s a bit ambiguous and the character creates more questions than answers. This may be intentional, as I would assume to see him showing up in the “Dark Universe” films that will be featuring other Universal monsters like Dracula and Wolfman. Look for Easter Eggs in the workshop and office hinting at other famous creatures (they are not obvious).

One of the major action sequences that takes place is when the cargo plane crashes as seen in the trailers. The work that went into the scene almost makes the entire film worth going to see as well as some underwater sequences. Cruise loves his action and in that he totally delivers in this film.

“The Mummy” isn’t going to win a bunch of awards in the story or acting department. However, that doesn’t mean that it still can’t be fun. Cruise delivers on what he’s known for, bigger than life stories with gigantic incredible action scenes. For many that’s enough to make an outing to the theater worth the effort. The story does do some different things with the classic Mummy tale but the choices for some will be predictable. Those who love the traditional creature feature of yester year won’t mind but those looking for substance will find it difficult when the narrative plays second fiddle to expansive action scenes.

Final Verdict: 3 out of 5

Briefly: Welcome to a new world of Gods and Monsters.

Universal has just debuted the very first trailer for the long-awaited reboot of The Mummy, and boy does it look action packed (with some gorgeous effects to boot).

In the film, “Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.”

Yeah… the baddie sort of sounds similar to X-Men: Apocalypse and Suicide Squad (and numerous films before that), but this looks like it could be a pretty neat start to Universal’s planned cinematic universe (since Dracula Untold… didn’t count).

For now, take a look at the first trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you think! The Mummy hits theatres June 9th, 2017!

Briefly: If you weren’t already excited for next week’s Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (did you even see Ghost Protocol?), this newly-released featurette will probably change your mind.

It’s short, clocking in at just over 1 minute, but it showcases just how incredible the stunts in the film can be.

You know that scene from the trailer that has Ethan hanging off the side of a plane during takeoff? That was actually Tom Cruise, on the side of an actually taking off airplane.

Pretty freaking incredible. Take a look at the featurette below, and let us know what you think! Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation hits theatres on July 31!

IMF agent Ethan Hunt is tracked down by The Syndicate, a highly trained organization of rogue assassins that kill on order. With the help of his colleagues, he plans to bring The Syndicate down by any means necessary.

Briefly: Yesterday marked our first look at this Summer’s probably-going-to-be-awesome Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, and today a much longer trailer for the film debuted online.

It looks totally ridiculous, and seriously awesome.

In the film, “IMF agent Ethan Hunt is tracked down by The Syndicate, a highly trained organization of rogue assassins that kill on order. With the help of his colleagues, he plans to bring The Syndicate down by any means necessary.”

The film stars Tom Cruise (of course), Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Alec Baldwin, and more, and will hit theatres on July 31st. Take a look at the new trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you think!

Looks like the latest trend in marketing is the “Trailer for a Trailer”, as we can plainly see in this teaser for Mission Impossible 5: Rogue Nation.

IMF agent Ethan Hunt is tracked down by The Syndicate, a highly trained organization of rogue assassins that kill on order. With the help of his colleagues, he plans to bring The Syndicate down by any means necessary.

You can peep the full length trailer, TOMORROW! You can get your eyes on the film Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation July 31st!

Make no mistake about it, the hype surrounding Edge of Tomorrow, from both critics and moviegoers alike, continues to grow throughout the film’s opening weekend. With an estimated $30 million in box-office revenue in the works and nearly 9 out of 10 critics voicing their approval, Tom Cruise proves he is still a major attraction. But is the megastar’s latest blockbuster collaboration with The Bourne Identity director, Doug Liman, worthy of all this adoration? Absolutely not!

Tom Cruise stars as Cage, a marketer-turned-Army Recruiter after an unexplained alien invasion threatens the survival of humankind. However, Cage has zero interest in actually setting foot on the battlefield. That is, until his commanding officer orders the under-qualified and cowardly soldier to attack the enemy with the first wave of fighters. Caught in the midst of war, Cage becomes trapped in a time-loop and uses the opportunity to team up with a Special Forces warrior named Rita (Emily Blunt) who transforms him into a killing machine determined to destroy the opposing forces.

edge1

Allow me to precede my arguments with a declaration that the latest sci-fi blockbuster, Edge of Tommorow, is a well-crafted and highly rationalized idea. Yet, Doug Liman’s action adventure is over-pursued and misguided. The whole “time travel” or “time loop” idea is by no means uncharted territory. Somewhat recent comparables such as Duncan Jones’ Source Code or Rian Johnson’s Looper use this scientific anomaly as a far more impressive backdrop to their better executed stories. With Edge of Tomorrow, the audience is asked to buy into an often-used, but convincing, character arc surrounding Tom Cruise’s onscreen personae, Cage. But to the film’s detriment, an unjust finale sells that transformation short and tears down the flimsy foundation it spends nearly two hours building.

edge2

Although Doug Liman’s Edge of Tomorrow contains a mediocre plot and a collection of performances that neither benefit nor detract from the final product, the blockbuster delivers an abundance of remarkably-shot scenes. The camera work and editing are superb enough to satisfy any action junkie imaginable, further demonstrating a need to applaud Liman’s effort for the movie’s sound technical achievements. However, at the end of the day, there’s no escaping a long list of basic fundamental blunders that ultimately confine Edge of Tomorrow to being a run-of-the-mill feature.

Sporting a balanced sheet of pros and cons, the latest sci-fi tale, Edge of Tomorrow, fails to stand out among a long list of similarly-molded films. Its “groundhog day” approach feels long-winded through a moderately engaging story. And although the special effects and captured shots are likely to be marveled at, there isn’t much else elevating Edge of Tomorrow to mainstream blockbuster glory.

Briefly: Warner Bros. has just debuted an awesome new featurette for next week’s Edge of Tomorrow.

The HUGE 13 minute long video is narrated by both Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, and it goes much deeper (almost too deep) into the plot than we’ve seen in any previous videos. We also see some of the fantastic production (including the heavy suits), and it’s definitely worth watching through to the end. I wasn’t overly excited for the film when the first trailer released, but after seeing this, I can’t wait to get in line.

Take a look at the video below (which also contains a ton of new footage), and let us know what you think! Edge of Tomorrow hits theatres on June 6th!

The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world.

Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.

But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

Briefly: Warner Bros. today debuted a brand new, extender trailer for next month’s Edge of Tomorrow.

I have to say that I wasn’t overly impressed with the first trailer for the film, but each subsequent video has garnered more and more excitement for the upcoming sci-fi.

The new preview clocks in at over three minutes long, and does a great job of explaining just what the hell is going in the film. Of course, you could also read the novel that the film is based on, All You Need Is Kill.

Four neat new featurettes for the for the film have also been revealed, which feature the cast and crew, and help to explain things even further. Take a look at everything below, and let us know what you think! Edge of Tomorrow hits theatres on June 6th!

The Edge of Tomorrow feature film is scheduled to be released from Warner Bros. Pictures on June 6th  in 3D, 3D IMAX and regular 2D. The film is directed by Doug Liman and stars Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt and Bill Paxton.

The story is set in the future when aliens called Mimics invade. Keiji Kiriya is just one of many recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor called a Jacket and sent out to kill. But he dies on the battlefield after only a few minutes, only to be reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On his 158th iteration, he gets a message from a mysterious ally – the female soldier known as the Full Metal Bitch. Is she the key to Keiji’s escape or his final death?

In 2009, ALL YOU NEED IS KILL served as the launch title for Haikasoru, a unique imprint developed by VIZ Media dedicated to publishing the most compelling contemporary Japanese science fiction and fantasy for English-speaking audiences. New York Times best-selling author John Scalzi declared ALL YOU NEED IS KILL to be a novel that, “reads fast, kicks ass, and keeps on coming,” and it has proven to be one of Haikasoru’s most popular titles. Sakurazaka’s other novels include Characters (co-written with Hiroki Azuma) and SLUM ONLINE, which was published in English by Haikasoru in 2010.

“Live…die…repeat. ALL YOU NEED IS KILL / EDGE OF TOMORROW delivers a nightmarish, action-packed spin on reliving one’s own triumphs, and failures,” says Nick Mamatas, Editor, Haikasoru. “Catch the original story that inspired the gripping movie with the official movie tie-in edition and in the Western comic book mode with the ALL YOU NEED IS KILL official graphic novel. Both of these debuts are perfect reads leading up to the highly anticipated theatrical debut of Edge of Tomorrow this summer!”

“The ALL YOU NEED TO KILL graphic novel stays very true to the original source novel,” says Joel Enos, editor for the new comic. “We made a conscious effort to create something unique that could stand on it’s own away from both the original novel, the film and the upcoming manga, but would nicely complement and pay respects to all three! Lee’s retro-futuristic art style especially puts ALL YOU NEED TO KILL as a comic into it’s own orbit!”

Briefly: Warner Bros. has just released a new (and way better than the first) trailer for the June sci-fi thriller Edge of Tomorrow.

It stars Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, Jeremy Piven, and plenty of others in what basically looks like Groundhog Day and Independence Day all mashed together (with just a little bit of Source Code thrown in for good measure).

I wasn’t overly impressed with the first trailer, but this new video actually made me want to check it out. In any case, you can take a look at the trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you think! Edge of Tomorrow hits theatres on June 6th, 2014!

Release date: 4/19/13

Directed by: Joseph Kosinski

Starring: Tom Cruise, Andrea Riseborough, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Melissa Leo, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

The Plot:  Earth’s moon was destroyed in a preemptive attack by aliens, creating devastating earthquakes and tidal waves that do a fantastic job of destroying the infrastructure of the planet. In a last ditch move, humanity sacrifices the planet by nuking it to rid itself of the the alien “scavengers.”

Some 60 years in the future, only a few humans remain to oversee the mostly automated harvesting of the Earth’s water supply. Its a tough and lonely job for the human team of “Jack” (Tom Cruise) and “Victoria” (Andrea Riseborough), who work together as an “effective team” to maintain attack drones that protect the huge harvester machines from the last vestiges of the aliens who survived the nuclear attack.

The Earth’s landscape is barren, with striking visuals of a world torn by massive shifts in gravity and war. The humans might have won the war, but the planet was trashed and the devastation is pretty much total. Humanity has been shipped off to one of Saturn’s moons to survive. Even though the “effective team” of Jack and Victoria have had the past five years of their memories wiped as a security precaution, their time on the planet is coming to an end. They’ll soon get to join the off world humans. Even though Jack is looking forward to leaving, there are still parts of him that wish to stay, and nagging dreams of a woman that plague him of a life filled with love. He can’t help but feel like Earth is his home, and who is this woman “Julia” from his dreams (Olga Kurylenko – Hitman and Quantum of Solace)?

The Film:

Based on a unpublished graphic novel passed around Comic Con Intl several years ago, Joseph Kosinski steps outside of the Tron Legacy world that he directed to create his own with Oblivion.

Kosinski overwhelmingly redeems himself with a strong combination of visually spectacular images and a traditional science fiction story that doesn’t have to rely on big explosions, fancy guns, or heavily designed aliens to enthrall audiences. Of course, it does have those elements, along with the post apocalyptic theme that is prevalent today, but it’s the story here that really drives the film. It’s not a Bladerunner, but it does evoke some of the same thoughts of “what if,” and what every good science fiction story should do, creates a sense of wonder and thought.

Moreover, the story does throw in a surprising bit of romance between Jack, Victoria, and Julia, which adds a nice element to this already strong plot.  There are a few other human characters that we only get to see briefly, and you can’t help but wonder what their stories are, but to expand on them in the film (as many critics have complained of) would take us off track. Yes, I would have liked to see more of Morgan Freeman as “Beech”, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones) as “Sykes,” but in all honestly, there just isn’t time if you want to keep the story moving. What the story does do well in relation to them is showing enough information that you can get a sense of their desperation and that there’s a whole other world existing out there, beyond just what Jack sees.

There’s a spectacular shot of  “Victoria,” (Andrea Riseborough) entering a pool, naked with the sun shinning behind her. Was it CGI? Was it just her with well engineered lighting, or a combination of both? You won’t have time to wonder what’s real and what’s not, because the story will be moving you along with revelations and action sequences that are paced perfectly, to keep you guessing almost every step of the way.

Bottom Line:

As is common with every science fiction story, there are the standard plot holes that plague just about every film in the genre to date. However, all is forgiven, because in Oblivion, we simply don’t have time to dwell on them. The story is big, the visuals epic, and heck, it has Tom Cruise, who actually does a very good job of not being standard Tom Cruise, but “Jack” instead. Go see it in the theater and if possible, IMAX, because this is what IMAX was designed for. Oblivion is the reason you should get out from under your DVD/Blu Ray collection and head to the cinema. It’s well worth the ticket cost, and a second viewing for this writer.

We may have seen a leaked version of the trailer yesterday but now Universal Pictures have released the official trailer for the Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) directed science fiction epic Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise as one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on an uninhabited Earth. Tom Cruise has a pretty good track record when it comes to sci-fi films, so this one looks like it should definitely live up to the hype.

Oblivion hits theaters April 19, 2013.

Just ahead of the release of the theatrical trailer for the sci-fi epic, Universal has released the first poster for the Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) directed Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise. The first trailer for the film will be debuting this Sunday.

Get a first look at Tom Cruise in All You Need Is Kill, the adaptation of the manga of the same name, showing Cruise running from an explosion in a powerful mech suit. All You Need Is Kill stars Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton and is directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Jumper).

The story unfolds in a near future in which a hive-like alien race, called Mimics, have hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, shredding great cities to rubble and leaving millions of human casualties in their wake. No army in the world can match the speed, brutality or seeming prescience of the weaponized Mimic fighters or their telepathic commanders. But now the world’s armies have joined forces for a last stand offensive against the alien horde, with no second chances.

Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously demoted and then dropped—untrained and ill-equipped—into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Cage is killed within minutes, managing to take an Alpha down with him. But, impossibly, he awakens back at the beginning of the same hellish day, and is forced to fight and die again…and again. Direct physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop—dooming him to live out the same brutal combat over and over.

But with each pass, Cage becomes tougher, smarter, and able to engage the Mimics with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt), who has lain waste to more Mimics than anyone on Earth. As Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated battle becomes an opportunity to find the key to annihilating the alien invaders and saving the Earth.

All You Need Is Kill is scheduled to hit theaters on March 14, 2014

Tom Cruise is a busy man these days. He’s got Jack Reacher and Oblivion making their way into theaters and the actor is currently shooting the adaptation of the manga, All You Need Is Kill and expected to soon shoot both the sequel to Top Gun as well as a new Mission Impossible.

Well, add one more onto his list for because Cruise has signed to star in Our Name Is Adam. With a script written by T.S. Nowlin, the film “will have Tom Cruise play an astronaut who travels back in time and works with his younger self.” The film has previously been described as Back to The Future-ish. After the success of Looper, should we expect a whole slew of new time travel movies to be hitting theaters?

A new trailer for Christopher McQuarrie’s Jack Reacher has been released. The new trailer shows off more of Tom Cruise as the bad-ass Reacher. Some people may not be buying it but I am actually looking forward to seeing Cruise take on something different than he usually does. The film also stars Robert Duvall, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, and David Oyelowo.

When a gunman takes five lives with six shots, all evidence points to the suspect in custody. On interrogation, the suspect offers up a single note: “Get Jack Reacher!” So begins an extraordinary chase for the truth, pitting Jack Reacher against an unexpected enemy, with a skill for violence and a secret to keep.

Jack Reacher opens December 21st.

A few months ago, it was revealed that Tom Cruise was attached to star and produced the Universal Pictures reboot of Van Helsing. The film will be developed by the team of Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci (Star Trek). However, up until now no director had been attached to the project.

Twitch Film is now reporting that Rupert Sanders (Snow White And The Huntsman) is currently in “early and still relatively casual” talks to direct the flick. The site also says that there’s a good chance that the film will be Tom Cruise’s next project after he finishes up shooting Warner Bros. All You Need Is Kill, so you can expect a director to be picked pretty soon. Personally I am hoping they go for a less campy feel this time around maybe go for something along the lines of what Guy Ritchie did with the Sherlock Holmes films.

Warner Bros. has announced that Doug Liman‘s sci-fi action film All You Need Is Kill will be hitting theaters March 14, 2014. The film, which is based off the manga of the same name, stars Tom Cruise as a soldier in a war against aliens who relives the day of his death over and over. The film also stars Emily Blunt and Bill Paxton.

This release date will put All You Need Is Kill head to head against Disney’s Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie. Will Tom Cruise’s star power be able to defeat a Disney flick? We’re going to have to wait and see on this one. This could turn out to be a very interesting weekend at the box office.

The synopsis for All You Need Is Kill:

The story unfolds in a near future in which a hive-like alien race, called Mimics, have hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, shredding great cities to rubble and leaving millions of human casualties in their wake. No army in the world can match the speed, brutality or seeming prescience of the weaponized Mimic fighters or their telepathic commanders. So, who’s ready to bust our their aviator shades and crank up some “Danger Zone”? Get ready to debate which one of you guys gets to be Ice Man. Reports are coming in that Tom Cruise was in Fallon, Nevada on Friday for some preliminary research work on the Top Gun sequel that we’ve been hearing about for quite some time now. It looks like the sequel really is happening and we could be seeing it sooner than expected. The actor was seen talking to Navy officials and doing some other unspecified prep work at the Naval Air Station in Fallon. Officials did confirm that indeed Cruise was in town doing prep work for the movie but could not confirm if the movie will be shot at that location. Maybe Cruise really wants to fly the jets this time around?

There’s not much known about the plot to this upcoming sequel, but what is known that the script will “reflect the advances in aviation technology since the ’80s, in particular that of the Navy’s killer robot drones that are now utilized throughout the world”. Jerry Bruckheimer will be producing the sequel with Tony Scott directing and of course we will see Cruise back as the hot-shot pilot Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell who “is said to be one of the last ‘old school’ pilots, captaining the last manned fighter aircraft, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter”. But, what about the rest of the cast?

Val Kilmer has reportedly expressed interest and it seems that just recently Rick Rossovich has gotten back in the acting game. But, I think out of the two we only really care about Kilmer coming back. It’s quite possible that we could get cameos from Meg Ryan and Tom Skerritt as well. We will have to wait and see what develops as far as casting goes though. So, who’s ready to fly back into the danger zone?

This weekend people will be excitedly seeing the remake/re-adaptation of Philip K Dick’s We Can Remember It For You Wholesale (aka Total Recall). Like most of Philip K Dick’s book the movie asks the ever popular question “What is Reality”

One of my favorite movies to pitch this question was Vanilla Sky, Cameron Crowe’s remake of the (admittedly superior) spanish film Open Your Eyes. The first time I heard of this movie was in Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs by Chuck Klosterman (my favorite book ever). In the chapter “The Awe-Inspiring Beauty of Tom Cruise’s Shattered Troll-like Face”, Klosterman recalls a particularly rough night of digestial issues forcing him to read a review of the movie in an old issue of Entertainment Weekly.

Klosterman basically says exactly what I’d end up thinking about the movie; that question of What is Reality? “might be the only valid reason for loving it”.

The movie follows Tom Cruise (his name in the movie is David Aarmes but let’s face it, he’s Tom Cruise… just a owner of a publishing firm instead of an actor). Tom Cruise fills his day with booze and casually banging Julie (Cameron Diaz). However when his best friend Brian (Jason Lee) brings Sofia (Penelope Cruz) to a party he falls head over heels in love.

The film is intercut with David in a prison cell wearing an emotionless mask being interviewed by Dr. Curtis McCabe (Kurt Russell). Apparently he’s being charged for murder. We are hearing David’s version of the events that took place.

It seems Julie can’t take David moving on to a new girl and drives them off a bridge. Julie dies in the crash while David survives but is left horribly disfigured. David begins hiding behind an emotionless mask (the one we’ve seen him wearing in the prison) and getting plastered to deal with the pain.

Sofia tries to bring David out of his slump and eventually motivates David to have his face repaired. Things are great for David until reality starts to slip away. David continues seeing his deformed face, Sofia continually turns into Julie. Eventually David attempts to suffocate Julie only to discovered his murdered Sofia instead.

David sees a commercial for Life Extension and requests Dr. Curtis take him to the offices as he finds them important to the case. There David is explained about the Lucid Dream program which allows someone to live in a continuous dream state until a cure for their sickness is found.

David realizes he’s in his own lucid dream and has been for 150 years.

Critics hated this movie. Rotten Tomatoes has a 40% rating which is second lowest in Crowe’s career (just above Elizabethtown… another future Guilty Pleasure). I feel like the attack on this movie has more to do with Tom Cruise than the movie itself.

This was released in 2001. By this point Tom Cruise had produced 6 movies (and starred in 3 of them). All the critics refer to the movie as Tom Cruise’s ego-trip and a vanity project. The fact is that very little of the plot line has changed from the spanish original (including Cruz playing Sophia in both films).

It seems like Hollywood likes to pretend that Tom Cruise has gone crazy. Rewatch some of his interviews in the 90’s, he’s always been crazy. However, around 2000 he started producing more and more of his own movies. When he started to not need the Hollywood system anymore; suddenly he’s crazy.

I think Vanilla Sky was the unfortunate victim of being releases at the beginning of a media attack on a public figure. The movie isn’t perfect (the original however is) but it’s still a solid movie. 2001 was a year filled with uninteresting blockbusters like Planet of The Apes and Zoolander (yeah I said it).

Crowe and Cruise followed the original plot line closely while interjecting elements of themselves. At the end of the day the film is successful in causing us to question our reality and making a film filled with emotional moments.

Plus the movie makes you believe that Penelope Cruz is far more fuckable than Cameron Diaz (kudos Mr. Crowe). Give this remake another shot before you go see this weekend’s (sure to be blockbuster) remake and this time Open Your Eyes.

Reports are coming in that Warner Bros. has officially given the green light to All You Need Is Kill, an adaptation of the science fiction graphic novel of the same name. Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) will be directing, while Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are set to star in the film. Originally Brad Bitt was was approached to play the lead, but he has conflicts with other films for which Warner wanted him. Dante Harper wrote the script with executive producer Joby Harold. Cruise began work on the movie last Friday in London. He recently completed production on another sci-fi graphic novel adaptation, Oblivion.

No release date for All You Need Is Kill has been set yet. But we should be expecting an announcement from Warner Bros. sometime soon.

If you’ve never read nor heard of All You Need Is Kill here’s a plot summary:

The story is told from the perspective of Keiji Kiriya, the protagonist, a new recruit in the United Defense Force which fights against the mysterious ‘Mimics’ which have laid siege to Earth. Keiji is killed on his first sortie, but through some inexplicable phenomenon wakes up having returned to the day before the battle, only to find himself caught in time loop as his death and resurrection repeats time and time again. Keiji’s skill as a soldier grows as he passes through each time loop in a desperate attempt to change his fate.

While it does seem cool I am not too sure about the cast and director on this one. But I will have to wait and see before I pass judgement because Tom Cruise has surprised me in the past before.

Check out the first trailer for the new Tom Cruise flick Jack Reacher, in which Cruise plays a 6’5, 250 pound bad ass. Okay not really, but apparently that’s how the character is written in Lee Child novels. Fans of the novels will probably be up in arms over the diminutive Tom Cruise, whose only 5’7 (hey lil fella) playing the character. Having no knowledge of the character, I could care less about the change. I think the movie looks cool.

A homicide investigator digs deeper into a case involving a trained military sniper who shot five random victims. Based on a book in Lee Child’s crime series.

Jack Reacher stars Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, and Robert Duvall. It is written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie. It opens December 21st.
