Today in the magical land of Japan, Universal Studios Japan had their (literal) groundbreaking event for Super Nintendo World. On top of finally getting a confirmation that there will be an actual Mario Kart ride heading to the land, we were also teased with a short little concept trailer of the land itself. The video shows Mario entering to the world through a pipe, while they tease being able to visit both Peach and Bowser’s castles. The land is still a far ways off as it’s not scheduled to open until 2020, but hey, it’s fun to think about what this could hold in the future. Check out the trailer below and get ready to buy a one way ticket to Osaka!

About 2 weeks ago, Nintendo and Universal teased eager theme park fans about what to expect from the iconic partnership. Today we finally got the answer (kinda.)

Late last night, Nintendo revealed that the now called Super Nintendo World will be hitting Universal Studios Japan by the year 2020, just in time for Japan to host the Olympics. The photo they teased us with is a beautiful piece of concept art featuring the mushroom kingdom in all its glory (green hills, Peach’s castle, Bowser’s castle, etc.).Sadly, no date has been given for a Florida or Hollywood release, but hopefully the company is working on that as well. Another thing to mention is that Nintendo has said that Mario thankfully won’t be the only Nintendo I.P represented by rides and locations (please Please PLEASE! give me my Donkey Kong Country mine cart ride.). Check out the image yourself! Are you excited, or disappointed? Tell us in the comments below!universal-japan

Briefly: Welcome to a new world of Gods and Monsters.

Universal has just debuted the very first trailer for the long-awaited reboot of The Mummy, and boy does it look action packed (with some gorgeous effects to boot).

In the film, “Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.”

Yeah… the baddie sort of sounds similar to X-Men: Apocalypse and Suicide Squad (and numerous films before that), but this looks like it could be a pretty neat start to Universal’s planned cinematic universe (since Dracula Untold… didn’t count).

For now, take a look at the first trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you think! The Mummy hits theatres June 9th, 2017!

Briefly: I’m unbelievably excited (and terrified) for this, and it’s something I’d never have expected.

After what seems like years of silence, Andreas Wulfila, developer of classic iOS gem Tiny Wings has just revealed that in just a few days time the simple, adorable, laughably simply, scarily addicting one buttoner will be hitting a new platform: tvOS on the fourth generation Apple TV.

I don’t know that I’ve ever been as addicted to another mobile title as I (along with many of my close friends) became to Tiny Wings. I can recall countless nights of groups of friends sitting around, playing their individual games, screaming with frustration when they failed, missed a goal, or messed up a run, and screaming with joy when they’d beat one another’s score. A single player game at heart, it’s one of the few titles that I ever became truly competitive with, which was pretty easy to do using iOS GamevCenter and its challenges.

The tvOS version was announced with a super cute trailer, and Andreas also revealed that the Apple TV version of the game will support split-screen multiplayer with the Siri Remote or with a combination of Siri Remote and MFi controller, and that the Tiny Wings iOS app will also let you use your iOS device as a controller.

I can’t freaking wait.

For now, take a look at the trailer below, get practicing on your iOS device, and let me know the most addicting mobile game you’ve ever played (I’m always looking for new titles)!

Earlier this year it was announced that Nintendo would be partnering with Universal Studios in order to create new rides and lands for their parks.

While originally planned for Universal Hollywood and Florida, it seems like their vision for the project has expanded. The video below talks a bit about what both companies are planning on contributing to the deal, as well as the new announcement that this new area will now be coming to all 3 Universal locations! Nintendo has promised even more details soon, but in the meantime, it’s nice to dream. What are your thoughts on the announcement video? Tell us in the comments below.

Ever since NBCUniversal’s acquisition of Dreamworks Animation back in April, the parent company hasn’t done much to change the animation company’s line-up that much, until now.

According to Variety, Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley met with the studio last week to pull the plug on the highly anticipated project The Croods 2. Originally aiming for a release in 2018, The Croods 2 would have been a follow up to 2013’s animation hit The Croods. The film was directed by Chris Sanders (same director of Lilo & Stitch, and How to Train Your Dragon) and centered around a caveman family traversing a new land after their home get’s destroyed. Nicolas Cage was also the star, and that alone makes the movie a 10/10.

What are your thoughts on the cancellation of the film? What’s your favorite Dreamworks Animation film? Tell us in the comments below!

Briefly: Well this is a fantastic trailer for a film that I’d somehow never heard of until now.

Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures have just dropped the first trailer for Hero and House of Flying Daggers director Zhang Yimou’s net project, The Great Wall.

The film tells the story of an elite force making a valiant stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure.

It’s a insanely interesting premise that had never even crossed my mind before: what if the Great Wall of China was built to keep something out?

The film stars Matt Damon, Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe, and Andy Lau, and was actually the largest film ever to be entirely shot in China.

Take a look at the trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you think! The Great Wall hits theatres on February 17th, 2017.

Javier Bardem has already portrayed a wide array of roles, some of which are villainous in nature. Now, say what you will about his role as a Bond villain, but Bardem was truly terrifying in the Coen Brothers’ No Country for Old Men.

javierbardem

Today, reports are coming out that Bardem is on the short list to play the Frankenstein monster. What’s even bigger here is that we have the remember that Universal is planning a connected cinematic universe between all of its monster properties. So, if Bardem is cast as Frankenstein, there’s a good chance he could show up in another Universal monster movie that’s already in the works, namely The Mummy reboot that Tom Cruise stars in. Another possibility is that we’ll see some sort of reference to Frankenstein in the film, or perhaps an after-credits scene.

Currently, the Universal Monster Cinematic Universe is being lead by Alex Kurtzman (Star TrekFringeLimitless). There is no set release date for Frankenstein. The Mummy is set to release in 2017.

We wanted to start Geekscape’s new year off with a bang, and what better way to do that than partnering with pals at Universal Pictures Home Entertainment to give away Blu-Rays of a few of the hottest horror titles of 2015?

That’s right! One luck winner will receive Blu-Ray versions of M. Night Shyamalan’s return to form, The Visit, Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno, and Ciaran Foy’s surprising sequel, Sinister 2.

Entering the giveaway couldn’t be easier (more on that below), but first, you should probably make sure that you can even handle this giveaway. All three of these films are absolutely terrifying, and The Green Inferno features some of the most brutal gore I’ve seen this side of Hostel (fittingly, seeing as they’re both Eli Roth films).

Learn a little bit about each film below, and keep reading in order to enter!

Sinister 2

In the aftermath of the shocking events of Sinister, a protective mother (Shannyn Sossamon of Wayward Pines) and her nine-year-old twin sons (real-life brothers Robert and Dartanian Sloan) find themselves marked for death in a rural house as the evil spirit of Bughuul continues to spread with frightening intensity.

The Green Inferno

New York college student Justine (Lorenza Izzo) meets student activist Alejandro (Ariel Levy) when he goes on a hunger strike on behalf of underpaid janitors. Smitten, she agrees to help Alejandro undertake his next project: rescuing an Amazon village from destruction by a greedy multinational corporation. But Justine soon comes to regret her decision when their plane crashes in the Peruvian jungle and the students realize they are not alone. No good deed goes unpunished as the well-meaning students are captured by the cannibalistic tribe they came to save.

The Visit

When Becca and Tyler are sent to their grandparents’ secluded Pennsylvania farmhouse for a weeklong stay, they quickly discover something is not right with the elderly couple. Faced with strange rules and increasingly frightening behavior, the children soon realize it will take all their wits to make it home alive. Critics rave the latest heart-pounding thriller from the director of The Sixth Sense and Signs and the producer of Paranormal Activity and The Purge is a “deliciously creepy triumph.” (Scott Mendelson, Forbes.com)

Universal really has been knocking it out of the park this year. With Furious 7 grossing $1.51 Billion dollars earlier this year and now Jurassic World at a STAGGERING $1.52 Billion dollars.

Jurassic World sits behind Avatar and Titanic. The last remaining market for the dinosaur adventure is Japan (August 5th), where it isn’t expected to make up the half billion it needs to claw into the number two spot.

This really is the year of Universal. Prior to 2015, there have been no Universal films to ever gross over a billion dollars, and now they have two?! You can be SURE they’re going to run the Jurassic World property into the ground, now.

What do you think ‘scapists? Does the film deserve the huge box office numbers or is it fuel purely on nostalgia?

Nintendo and Universal have announced a joint venture that will bring all of our favorite Nintendo franchises to life at Universal theme parks!

Promising “spectacular, dedicated experiences based on Nintendo’s wildly popular games, characters and worlds,” we’ll soon be able to expect a day where we can hang out with Mario and friends when on our family trips. While details on what specific games, franchises and attractions will be revealed at a later date, the declaration stating that their “most popular” franchises will be represented as “major attractions” means that we’re pretty much promised Mario and Zelda representation at this point. Ah, if only we could get the Animal Crossing Weed Pulling Experience, or the Earthbound themed, Giygas’ Wild Ride, complete with womb simulation, then I could die happy.

For longtime Nintendo fans, this is very exciting news. This may not be the first time Nintendo and its affiliates have dabbled in theme park shenanigans, (Nintendo’s Six Flags Wii Experience kiosks and the traveling Pokemon theme park in Japan come to mind,) but this event will mark the first full fledged park representation for The Big N. What this attraction will consist of, when it’s arriving and at what parks will participate is still unknown, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted as the news breaks.

What Nintendo franchises are you hoping make an appearance?

Universal today released a new featurette that digs deeper into Dracula Untold. The brutal looking film digs into the untold (duh) origin of Dracula, and looks to paint the character in a different light than we usually see him: a hero who turns to darkness to protect the ones he loves.

The film stars Luke Evans, Sarah Gadon, Dominic Cooper, Diarmaid Murtagh, Samantha Barks, and more, and hits theatres on October 17th. Take a look at the features below, and let us know what you think!

Of all the cinematic genres, it has long fascinated me that horror is among the few to predominately feature women in prominent roles. Whether a screaming, almost-naked teen babysitter is shorthand for sympathy and terror and is thus quietly misogynistic, or because horror filmmakers tend to be more socially progressive and want strong women conquering forces is solidly uncertain. This is for you to decide.

Still, it always brings a smile to my face whenever I see a strong central woman in any movie, and As Above, So Below deserves recognition.

Just before I entered the heavenly gates that were the doors to Power MorphiCon in Pasadena this past weekend, I had the chance to talk about the dungeon to hell with Perdita Weeks, the star of As Above, So Below! How much fun did the smart, talented, and indeed lovely Ms. Weeks have playing a badass? And what was it like down there?

Scarlet is a strong and daring individual. She’s Indiana Jones meets Ellen Ripley to me. So, very plainly, how much fun did you have playing a badass?

Perdita: It was so good. It was so fun. I knew it was going to be fun when I read the script. Yeah, it was like, I’ve kind of always wanted to play Lara Croft, unfortunately Angelina got there first. [laughs] I just thought, [it was] really fun, [she was] really strong, leading a group of individuals down to the catacombs. It was brilliant. Hard, but very, very fun.

PERDITA WEEKS (SCARLET) AND BEN FELDMAN (GEORGE) IN AS ABOVE, SO BELOW.

Yeah, I picked up on the Lara Croft thing a little bit too. The movie was kind of like a video game to me. But you filmed it in the actual catacombs! With the physical challenges in those tiny, dark hallways, being terrified must not have been farfetched, was it? What was it like shooting down there?

Perdita: The first time we went, the first time we went before shooting was just like a walk around. The Dowdles showed off which spaces we’d be using specifically. And it was a little daunting, more just because I’ve never shot anywhere that was going to be so logistically difficult. It was very tough on the crew, having to get all their cables down there, incredibly heavy equipment, and lighting luckily wasn’t really an issue, because the only lights were from our head helmets and the one from the camera. But because of the style of shooting, the found footage aspect, and the fact that all six of us would essentially be having cameras, it meant the crew had to completely hide away, all the time, because you never knew what would be caught in the frame. But it was more incredibly exciting and novel, to be one of the few people who ever shot down there. There was maybe a good forty to sixty of us. It was quite a bonding, unifying experience actually. I mean, you spend that long, you know, with that many people, it was a tight-knit crew by the end of it. You know, we felt like we had really gone through something.

By the time we got to shoot in the sound studio in the last week we were like, this is heaven! There were toilet facilities, and coffee! [laughs] It was hardening, but it was really good for the film. We all felt quite so proud of ourselves after it. Some people had a couple of … head injuries, minor.

Oh, wow.

Perdita: Yeah, ceiling, the height, it changes all the time so it was incredibly unstable. Lots of times, lots of members of the crew had just gone smack! Into kind of like a sticking out rock. It’s a mad, mad place to be in for the entire film. It was bizarre. Probably more bizarre than it even looks in the film. It was scary in the film, in reality it was kind of hysterical. Like, what are we even doing here? Is it even going to work? But, it was great. It adds to the kind of excitement.

SCARLET (PERDITA WEEKS) CRAWLS THROUGH THE CATACOMBS OF PARIS IN AS ABOVE, SO BELOW.

Your terror came out genuine, it was amazing to watch. You put on an excellent performance down there.

Perdita: Thank you!

In addition to the actual setting and challenges that came with it, you’re also filming a found footage movie. Very verite-like. Was there any learning curves in acting in those spaces with that kind of genre? As opposed to, for example, shooting The Tudors?

Perdita: Oh, yes! But it was great! You have a lot more energy, because you’re never off. You never know when the camera is gonna capture you. It brings you that much more closer. For each sort of scene, if you can call it that, because in the film the action is so continuous, and lots of time we’d have ten or fifteen minutes of continuous action. I mean, it was incredibly, absolutely exhausting, but brilliant. We would get to do one scene, all day. And at the end of it we’d change, every single take it would be different. But you know, they were using continuous takes, and every time the DOP would do something different. So you never knew really what was going to happen. It was kind of just about reacting to all that.

There was six of us there, all of our performances are changing all the time, so it was a great acting experience, actually. Especially when you’re doing, you know, people give horror a bad rep, but my God, it’s hard work. For any actor. It’s very testing. I’d recommend it to any actor. It’s very hard work but very, very satisfying.

Scarlet is burdened by family guilt and seeks redemption. She’s rebellious and she never hesitates. She immediately dives into a situation. Do you think she’s trying to prove something to the world, or do you think she’s trying to prove something to herself?

Perdita: I think the thing with her is that the thing she really isn’t interested in is fame, or money, or even success to some degree. My whole idea for her was that, she works as a professor in order to just make enough money, and she’ll stop the very second she’s got just the right amount to go and complete this mission. And the thing with her, the reason she is so, as you say, has no hesitation to do anything … is she’s got nothing to lose. That’s what I love about her. Characters like this just don’t come out often. Characters with absolutely nothing to lose as the one complete driving force.

It was a complete dream to play because it makes every decision that you have to make incredibly easier. You know exactly what their purpose is. And what their motivation is. You know, with her, I honestly didn’t think she’d mind if she died doing this. Because, there is no one around. She’s cast off maybe the one person who maybe did care about her, and she doesn’t have any family left. It was the only thing that mattered to her, until the point where she realizes she’s put other people in danger. And that’s her saving grace. You know, she really doesn’t want to endanger anyone else. You see it in the beginning of the movie when she goes to Iran. It’s the only thing that matters. If she dies, she dies. There’s no one who would miss her.

She was fearless and absolutely one of my favorite characters in recent history. You played her well.

Perdita: Oh, great! [laughs]

Film Title: As Above/So Below

One last question. Because this is Geekscape, we are nerds here. This is a bit of a fun question. The catacombs are of course terrifying and ancient. If you could be any superhero and go back to the catacombs, and face off all the demons, what superhero would you be?

Perdita: Ooh! Golly, I’m not very up on my superheroes! Who would I be? Well I don’t know if she’s really a superhero, but what was the name that Alan Cumming played like in X-Men, he was a little black sort of–oh, no! I’m gonna be, oh, what’s the name of that… Rebecca Romijn-Stamos played in X-Men and Jennifer Lawrence played now?

Mystique!

Perdita: Mystique! Yeah! That would be cool. It’d be handy! You know, to just blend in and whatever. And also, she’s a good ninja.

As Above, So Below is in theaters now. Head here for our review, and here for our interview with director and writers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle!

Whether you know much about filmmaking or not, you have to agree that it’s difficult work. There is so much that goes into just one shot, it can be daunting and intimidating to even think about.

Now imagine you’re in dark tunnels with real skeletons at your feet.

During Power MorphiCon weekend I interviewed As Above, So Below writer/director John Erick Dowdle and writer Drew Dowdle, the brothers behind the newest horror movie from Legendary and Universal Pictures. Filmed inside the actual catacombs beneath Paris, the Dowdles chatted with me about shooting a satanic horror movie while almost losing their sanity in the dark, macabre tunnels full of human remains.

It was extremely difficult to imagine as I sat inside the well-lit lobby of the Westin in sunny, 80-degree Pasadena, on my way to a Power Rangers convention.

absbresize

So I was impressed that you shot it in the actual catacombs. Why was it important for you guys to remain so authentic?

John Erick: When you build something, you just feel, like, it never feels as real as the real thing. Anytime you give someone the real thing, it just adds such depth to the texture of the movie. And you feel the performances. The performances, you can tell seeing this movie, you can tell the actors aren’t stepping off set between takes, sipping a latte and texting their friends. They’re in it, you know, spending ten hours six stories under the ground every day. You can see it in their faces. Like, all of us [became] half-crazy as a result of being down there so much. And it shows! You feel the presence of that space. On our first location scout, we went underground and we all felt, “Oh my god, this is terrifying down here.” And to try to build that and recreate that on set, and be all like, “Okay, everyone, act scared!” It wouldn’t have worked the same way. When you go down there, you feel your chest get tight, your breathing gets shallow, the air is still, and the sound is really weird and tweaky. You just couldn’t fake that.

Drew: When we were talking about doing the movie initially too, it was one of those [conversations]. It was like, if we’re not shooting in the real location, then we almost didn’t think it was worth making the movie! [laughs] It is such a specific place in the world. And if you’re not shooting the real thing, we knew that would be obviously the number one question coming home to. “Is this in the real place?” It has to be. [Questions like] “Do you build some of it? Go somewhere that’s maybe easier to shoot in Paris that might look like this?” To us, none of those were options that were interesting alternative.

Film Title: As Above/So Below

Well, you guys succeeded because it came out wonderful.

John Erick: Thanks so much! I really appreciate that.

There is a bit of a video game aesthetic in the movie. I don’t know if that was intentional or not. Like, I was watching the film and it kind of came off like a dungeon crawler in a very literal sense. Were video games at all a point of reference in the making of the film?

John Erick: You know, we didn’t shy away from that, but we didn’t consider that like a reference. And yet we knew that early on in that first sequence when she’s going in that cave, we saw that were like, “Okay, it sorta feels like a first-person shooter,” we thought that was pretty cool. We really wanted to have a camera on Scarlet that was just sort of attached to her clothing, but we realized we wanted to see her a little bit too. Even if it’s just the side of her face, even just a little something so [she’s] not totally disembodied. So we sorta went with that aesthetic early on and it really felt effective. So it was pretty cool. It was fun to play with.

Found footage is a difficult genre. For this film it felt necessary, but it is a hard genre. Did you have any hesitations about doing it in this style?

John: We talked about it for like two minutes, and were like, “You know what, this fits this movie.” There’s something to it, about shooting in the catacombs. If you tried to shoot traditional, you know, light and everything in one direction of the room, and then shoot that out, and then switch out all the lights [for the other side], like that would be a nightmare down there. We were like, let’s go really guerilla. Let’s shoot it like you were if you were doing this real. Let’s light the whole thing with the actor’s headlamps. There’s a scene near the end of the movie where they’re standing around the hole, that whole scene was lit literally from Scarlet, the camera from Scarlet’s hand.

Oh, wow.

John Erick: There’s no other light. We had the actors lighting, I’d say 90% of the movie. And probably 30% of the movie was shot by the actors! [laughs] We really went for like, “Let’s see what kind of happy accidents happen. Let’s try not to over-produce it.” And it really ended up, I think, adding to the realness of the movie. And frankly, it was a lot of fun to shoot that way.

Drew: I’d say too, the origin of this particular character was always kind of in a found footage world. We always had an idea that, you know, doing a female archaeologist, kind of one-part Indiana Jones character in a found footage world would be a really interesting movie. So when we conceptualized this initially, it was always kind of in a found footage set. So it never really occurred to us, frankly, to not do it that way in this setting.

(L to R) ZED (ALI MARHYAR), SOUXIE (MARION LAMBERT), GEORGE (BEN FELDMAN) AND BENJI (EDWIN HODGE) IN AS ABOVE, SO BELOW.

I picked up on the Indiana Jones similarities, to me she was kind of like Ellen Ripley and Indiana Jones, I thought it was fantastic. But you guys enjoy doing terror in small spaces. You did Devil and Quarantine, and now As Above, So Below. So, are you guys claustrophobic like Benji? (Note: Benji is a character in As Above, So Below and he suffers from claustrophobia.)

[both laugh]

John Erick: It’s actually funny, a little bit. I gotta say, the first time we did a location scout of the real catacombs, we crawled through a hole about the size of like a medicine ball, we crawled through that, and we’re like in a tunnel we had to crawl through on all fours and then there was water and I never really considered [it]. I’m finding all sorts of new fears as a result of this job. [laughs]

But like, I never considered myself claustrophobic, but there was a point at which, literally I was having a hard time breathing, like I’m freaking out! Like I’m genuinely terrified! And I had this moment, that if I can’t hack this, they’re gonna have to replace me. And that first location scout they were like, okay, let’s keep going until it feels normal and natural. So we did that first location scout for five hours underground, going deeper and deeper, and one of the people on our team totally lost their mind. They had a total breakdown. So, it was something! It was something down there.

Drew: Yeah, our first scout was actually through that hole on the train tracks that they go through in the movie, was where we entered. On the other side of the hole in reality was about fifty yards of tunnel that’s like, elbows and knees, army style crawling before you can get into a space where you can actually stand up. So for me I’m not very claustrophobic, what I found terrifying personally was the idea that, I’m more of a map person, like I really need to know where I am on the grid, and once you make about three turns in there your sense of direction is gone. And you have no idea which way is out. So not knowing where the exit is and if our guide dropped dead of a heart attack or something, you know, that fear was much more palpable for me than the claustrophobia.

Well, I’m very happy you guys survived.

[both laugh]

The title, “As Above, So Below“, it refers to confronting your inner demons. As storytellers, why is that attractive?

John Erick: Well, you know, I think going back a little bit to the confined spaces, we always find something terrible happens, it triggers that flight or fight response. If you take flight out of it, the confined spaces take flight out of the equation. It forces characters to face something that terrifies them. You know, frankly, I feel personally in my twenties, like there were so many things that scared me I backed away from, there were plenty of them, and in my late twenties, I’m like, I gotta start hitting these things more head-on. And in doing so, literally every aspect of my life changed.

For me that’s been something personally that’s really, I don’t know, made a big difference. I remember a friend of mine, had a kind of metaphor: gotta face life like a boxer, apparently a boxer, like if you lean away, that’s when you get clobbered as a boxer. But if you lean in to the fear, put your face like right into the fear, that is how you box. That’s how you have to fight. In our movies, going through that journey with our characters seeing, you know, if you can’t run away from your fears, you have to face it, and you do, are you better with yourself? How did that change you?

One last thing. Scarlet was a fascinating character. Do you think we’ve seen the last of her?

John Erick: We hope not! We’ll tell you August 31st!

[everyone, including me, laughs]

Drew: Yeah, we’d love to continue these stories. She’s not only a fun character, but such a terrific actress and really fun to work with. Get the band back together, if the audiences want it.

Dominion premiered on Syfy on June 19th, and airs on Thursday at 9/8c. It’s set after Armageddon, and mankind’s last bastion of safety is the City of Vega, which was Las Vegas (there’s a sin metaphor here somewhere). It takes place after the events in the movie Legion,  where the war between Heaven and Hell has wrecked earth, and Mankind is pitted against Angels and Demons to survive. The panel will feature the series stars Chris Egan, Tom Wisdom, Roxanne McKee, Alan Dale and Anthony Stewart Head, as well as Executive Producer Vaun Wilmott.

The panel is on Friday, July 25th. from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in room 6DE.

Syfy will also be featuring a panel with the cast of Helix, so we can ask all those burning questions. Like “How did you get a second season?” and “Where exactly are you in the Arctic where it’s equally night and day all the time?”

The second season will premiere sometime in Winter 2015.

And, if you want to know what we really think about Helix, head over to our 10 Things Wrong With Helix article.

What do you think, Comic-Conners? Which panel is a must for you? All of them? None of them? Let us know in the comments!

Briefly: I hadn’t actually heard of this one until today, but it actually looks pretty cool!

Universal today released the first official trailer for Dracula Untold.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think!

http://youtu.be/3AXVuHRSR_w

Luke Evans (Fast & Furious 6, Immortals) stars in Dracula Untold, the origin story of the man who became Dracula. Gary Shore directs and Michael De Luca produces the epic action-adventure that co-stars Sarah Gadon, Dominic Cooper, and Diarmaid Murtagh.

Looks like Guillermo Del Toro and Peter Jackson didn’t give up on the idea of working together after Guillermo left behind the directing duties on The Hobbit!

Today, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros announced that both Jackson and Del Toro would team up for what the pair are calling “their dream project”: ‘King Kong VS Godzilla’! Legendary Pictures, the production company behind this summer’s Godzilla and last summer’s Del Toro helmed Kaiju epic Pacific Rim, will produce the joint effort for both the studios and the creatives.

As you’ll remember, Legendary is now on the Universal lot, owners of King Kong, who put out Peter Jackson’s 2005 Kong remake. The production company was formerly on the Warner Bros lot, the company that released Pacific Rim and this summer’s Gareth Edwards directed Godzilla reboot.

Obviously, a movie the size of King Kong VS Godzilla may just need two studios to bring it to the screen. Warner Bros is no stranger to this, having partnered with MGM on Peter Jackson’s current Hobbit trilogy, and dual studio productions seem to be becoming the norm in this tent-pole driven day and age.

The only question now is… who will direct and who will produce? Or is there room in the director’s chair for both of these cinematic titans?

King Kong VS Godzilla is scheduled for a November 2016 release.

Briefly: Somehow, I missed this fantastic video until just a few minutes ago. Being a big fan of Bates Motel, this was simply too good not to share.

I can’t seem to find the context of the sketch, but I assume that it debuted during the Bates Motel panel at Comic-Con, and has since made its way online. The video features Norman himself, Freddie Highmore, preparing for production of the second season, and subsequently going a little crazy when he sees the original Bates Motel on the Universal Studios lot.

Take a look at the video below, and be sure to let us know what you thought of the show’s first season, and if you’re excited for season two!

In “Bates Motel,” following the tragic death of her husband, Norma Bates buys a motel on the outskirts of the idyllic coastal town of White Pine Bay, seeking a fresh start. As Norma and Norman get ensconced in their new home, they discover this town isn’t quite what it seems, and the locals aren’t so quick to let them in on their secrets. But the Bates’ are done being pushed around and will do whatever it takes to survive – and will do whatever it takes to protect their own secrets.

Briefly: Less than one day after Jim Carrey renounced support for Kick-Ass 2, Universal has debuted a new poster for it.

Coincidentally enough, 25% of the image is filled with Carrey’s character, Colonel Stars and Stripes.

If the first film was any indication, Kick-Ass 2 should be an absolute blast. Take a look at the new poster below, and let us know what you think! Kick-Ass 2 hits theatres on August 16th!

KickAss

Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010’s irreverent global hit: Kick-Ass 2.  After Kick-Ass’ (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol.  When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation.

When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young vigilante Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and Dave. With graduation looming and uncertain what to do, Dave decides to start the world’s first superhero team with Mindy. Unfortunately, when Mindy is busted for sneaking out as Hit Girl, she’s forced to retire—leaving her to navigate the terrifying world of high-school mean girls on her own. With no one left to turn to, Dave joins forces with Justice Forever, run by a born-again ex-mobster named Colonel Stars and Stripes.

Just as they start to make a real difference on the streets,  the world’s first super villain, The Mother F%&*^r, assembles his own evil league and puts a plan in motion to make Kick-Ass and Hit Girl pay for what they did to his dad. But there’s only one problem with his scheme: If you mess with one member of Justice Forever, you mess with them all.

How could Universal NOT bring Van Damme back for this? Did The Expendables 2 not prove how incredibly versatile the man still is?

THR has learned that Universal has begun development on a reboot of the 1994 hit, Timecop. The original movie, based on the Dark Horse comic, is widely regarded as Van Damme’s best film. It spawned both a short-lived television series, and a direct to DVD sequel.

Marc Shmuger and Tom McNulty will produce the film, which is being treated as a complete reimagining, and is currently in search of a writer. No further information has been revealed about the project, but we’ll keep you updated as we learn more.

How do you feel about the news? Who would you like to see in the role of Walker?

Director Colin Trevorrow has tweeted the following photo which reveals that Jurassic Park 4 will take us back Isla Nublar. In the original 1993 film, Island Nublar was the location of the original failed theme park which was not returned to in either of the sequels. Both the second and third film took place on Isla Sorna aka “Site B”. It looks like we may be returning to some very familiar locations when the film hits theaters next year.

Jurassic Park 4 is set to hit theaters June 13, 2014

A brand new still image from Jeff Wadlow’s Kick-Ass 2 has been released online. The new image features Colonel Stars And Stripes training the members of the team Justice Forever.

Plans for a big screen adaptation of the popular video game franchise Gears Of War may finally be moving forward. The adaptation has been in development for quite some time with New Line picking up the rights for the property with plans to have Len Weisman direct some years ago. However, creative differences between the studio and Epic Games led to New Line Cinema releasing the rights back in 2007.

Ted and 47 Ronin producer Scott Stuber has gained the film rights and will develop the script for the project with Epic Games. Despite having a first look deal with Universal, the film does not currently have a distributor and a screenwriter has yet to be hired for the project as well.

Horror certainly has changed over the years. If you were to hold them side by side, it’d be impossible to see how Psycho lead to Hostel III. However, if you were to work your way through the various decades of horror films, you’ll be able to see just how the genre evolved (or devolved, depending on who you ask).

Here’s a quick breakdown for you though. While the 60’s focused on films like Psycho and Peeping Tom, horror was still mostly tame until Hershell Gordon Lewis came to town with Blood Feast and 2000 Maniacs. You’d think this would mark the start of gore, but it wasn’t. Lewis’ films mostly remained all his own. By the 70’s, horror became more psychologically driven. Films about stalkers, cannibals and revenge dominated the genre. This is where you started to get films like The Hills Have Eyes, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Halloween.

Enter the 1980’s. Suddenly there was a new horror movie every week. You had a nice blend of gore films, low-budget films from Full Moon Pictures and Troma, as well as plenty of Slasher flicks. Eventually, in a sea of sequels, horror died out in the 90’s.

It wasn’t until 1996 that Horror suddenly became important again with Scream, but within a few years, the self aware slasher became tiresome. While the late 90’s/early 2000’s produced a few decent surprises (Cabin Fever comes to mind), most horror fans were clamoring for the eventual release of Rob Zombie’s directorial debut, House of 1000 Corpses.

200px-House_of_1000_Corpses_poster

Rob Zombie created music for Metal-heads and Horror fans (which basically has a lot of overlap). His filmmaking career at that time had been minimal.. He did some animation for Beavis & Butthead Do America, as well as directed some White Zombie music videos, but that was the extent of it.

In the 90’s, he was instrumental in helping revive Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights which opened the door for him to make a film for Universal. What he ended up presenting them was a film so demented, dark and bizarre that Universal believed it would receive a NC-17 rating and refused to release it.

The film is a throwback to the gritty psychological films of the 1970’s blended with the modern day gore. It’s packed with winks and nods to The Manson Family, Hills Have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the Marx Brothers. It begins with a group of 4 teenagers (Including pre-Office Rainn Wilson and fat Chris Hardwick) driving around, when they stop at Captain Spaulding’s gas station/Museum of Monsters and Madmen. It’s there that they find out about Dr. Satan, a local serial killer.

Museum

While trying to find the tree where he was hung, they encounter a hitch-hiker named Baby. Shortly after picking her up, they blow a tire and need a tow. Baby informs them her family lives near by and her brother has a tow-truck.

The group end up in a strange dinner/variety show performed by the family, and when they begin to leave the house after their tire has been replaced, they are attacked and held captive for Otis Driftwood’s (Baby’s Adopted Brother) demented experiments. It just gets dark, more deranged and in general unsettling from there.

The film was completed in 2000 but Universal refused to release it. It wasn’t until 3 years later, when Zombie was able to purchase back the rights that he managed to finally get the film released by Lionsgate on April 11th 2003. I remember seeing it the night it came out with a group of friends after work (listening to the movie soundtrack on the drive there). That same weekend, I went for an encore with my girlfriend at the time. The next week we found out her best friend hadn’t seen the movie yet, and I went and saw it a 3rd time.

I know many people who hated this film and consider it Zombie’s worst movie. While I know that The Devil’s Rejects (the films sequel) is a superior film, I have more fun watching this. The film grows in enjoyment ten years later. It’s still just as demented as ever before. Rob Zombie’s weird usage of various camera styles and filters, as well as his unrelenting gore and plain bizarre twists make the movie difficult to follow but still a ton of stupid fun.

Some people might not care, but I say Happy 10 Year Anniversary House of 1000 Corpses.

Universal has released the first red band theatrical trailer for Jeff Wadlow’s KICK-ASS 2, the upcoming film adaptation of the comic series by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. ****, this one looks like it’s going to be tons of fun.

By Crom! Arnold Schwarzenegger will once again tell us what is best in life as he returns to the role that made him a star as Conan The Barbarian, in Universal Pictures The Legend Of Conan. Schwarzenegger will reprise his role as the Cimmerian warrior in a film to be produced by Fredrik Malmberg and Chris Morgan. Chris Morgan (47 RoninWanted) is expected to write the script for the film.

The only film that The Legend Of Conan will adhere to will be 1982’s Conan The Barbarian. The film will pretty much just ignore Conan The Destroyer and the reboot that starred Jason Momoa altogether.

“The original ended with Arnold on the throne as a seasoned warrior, and this is the take of the film we will make. It’s that Nordic Viking mythic guy who has played the role of king, warrior, soldier and mercenary, and who has bedded more women than anyone, nearing the last cycle of his life. He knows he’ll be going to Valhalla, and wants to go out with a good battle.”

Schwarzenegger added:

“I always loved the Conan character and I’m honored to be asked to step into the role once again. I can’t wait to work with Universal and the great team of Fredrik Malmberg and Chris Morgan to develop the next step of this truly epic story.”

There’s no word yet if the film will be R-rated like that original film, but one can only hope.

Deadline has reported that the remake of the much loved 1983 crime thriller Scarface is set to be rewritten. Paul Attanasio (Donnie Brasco, The Good German) is set to redo the script, which was originally penned by David Ayer (End of Watch, Harsh Times).

The film is said to be a contemporary spin on the 1983 title, which itself was a loose remake of the 1932 film of the same name. As with the 1983 version, the new Scarface will not be a direct remake, and instead will simply build on the themes and common elements of the previous films. This means that while the story and characters may (or may not) be different, the overall flow is likely to be the same: an outsider works their way up to kingpin in a criminal underworld, only to be consumed by their newfound power.

What did you think of Brian De Palma’s version of Scarface? Had you been looking forward to the remake?

The days of a video game and tech centric channel are now far behind us. According to sources pulled by Variety, G4 will undergo a rebranding of sorts. According to these unnamed sources, the new G4 will instead appeal to more chic topics and become GQ (as in the magazine) of TV. While these sources claim that the channel will stay true to it’s video game and tech roots, we can only wait and see.

I personally haven’t watched G4 in quite some time. Say what you will about the hosts of their various shows, but their chance to stick with their roots has come and gone. One of my earliest memories with the channel comes from their early days following the merge with TechTV.

Whatever the name may be, this rebranding will come early 2013. Get your COPS, Cheaters, and Ninja Warriors’ while you still can!

It appears that nothing is safe from the remake and reboot process these days. Deadline reports that Adam Berg, who had his name once attached to the Deadpool movie, is set to make his big debut as the director of an updated version of Videodrome for Universal Pictures. The remake is scripted by Ehren Kruger (Transformers: Dark Of The Moon) and will be produced by Daniel Bobker (Dream House).

The original film, which was released in 1983 and starring James Woods, was set in Toronto during the early 1980s, and follows the CEO of a small cable station who stumbles upon a broadcast signal featuring extreme violence and torture. The layers of deception and mind-control conspiracy unfold as he uncovers the signal’s source and loses touch with reality in a series of increasingly bizarre and violent organic hallucinations. The film has been described as “techno-surrealist”. This news probably won’t be very well received by many fans of the cult classic. This is especially due to Deadline reporting Universal’s plans to “modernize the concept, infusing it with the possibilities of nano-technology and blow it up into a large-scale sci-fi action thriller.” I’m curious what David Cronenberg thinks about it.
