After some not so well received recent films and failing to successfully get a new Clerks and Mallrats off the ground, Kevin Smith is going back to a fan favorite duo.

That’s right, announced today via Facebook, Smith has confirmed that he is working on a brand new Jay and Silent Bob film. Not much is known about the film right now as it’s still in the writing phase, but Smith did post a picture of him working on it at his desktop.  The film is set to be a reboot with a focus on parodying the current Hollywood trend of constant reboots. No solid release date is in sight, but here’s hoping for the best. Are you excited for this new film? What’s your favorite Kevin Smith film? (You can say anything but Yoga Hosers.) As 2016 ends to make way for 2017, we are fastly approaching the DuckTales reboot.

Now the last time a network tried to reboot some of its older properties, it didn’t turn out so well *cough* PPG *cough*, but Disney is taking steps to make sure this reboot caters to both old fans of the series, but also new fans and even fans of the original comic. Earlier this year they revealed an image of the reboot featuring Donald and the original shows cast in a more stylized comic like animation (being used for the header above). Disney has now released another teaser in the same style showing off the same characters, but with one new addition. That’s right! Everyone’s favorite bumbling aviator Launchpad McQuack.ducktales-2017-launchpad

Not only that, but other returning characters include Gyro Gearloose, Duckworth, and Magica De Spell (hopefully still being voiced by the amazing June Foray). Since summer 2017 is still a ways away, Disney is still slowly rolling out info on the series, but they did leave us with a catchy little teaser. Check it out below! Are you excited about this reboot? Which characters are you hoping come back? Tell us in the comments below!

After over 2 decades, the long awaited (or dreaded) new Ghostbusters film is finally in theaters. And based on the opening weekend numbers, there’s a pretty good chance that you’ve seen it. And if you’ve seen it you probably have a definite opinion on it. Opinions we’ve witnessed so far have ranged from extremely good to impossibly bad.

My opinion is somewhere right in the middle. I didn’t have fun watching this movie and in general the movie fell flat. But what hurt the most was how much potential the new Ghostbusters had. I’m aware that I am someone who has never made an actual movie. And I’m about to Monday Morning Quarterback it. But I believe a lot of issues I had with the film could easily have been fixed with small changes.

First, let me break down what some of the issues for me were. This will get into Spoiler Land and it’s probably best not to read beyond this point if you haven’t seen the movie.

Okay. You have been warned.

ghostbusters2016

Now not all of these issues are easy fixes. At one point, our heroes witness the main villain running off to destroy New York City during the mid-afternoon and but are not see again until some time at night when they finally jump into the Ecto-1 and tear onto the streets to catch him. Um. Hours and entire scenes have passed. How do you create a sense of urgency if the characters themselves don’t show any sense of urgency? When the police suspect that our heroes have just killed a man by throwing him from a window the scene ends with a series of Patrick Swayze references? There’s absolutely no resolution to this potential hurdle and it’s swept under the rug like so many potentially rich story beats in exchange for some witty dialogue. The movie ignores plot in lieu of potential laughs several times and the story and characters are worse off for it. I can list every offense but for the sake of this article I’m going to focus on the three major issues that most of the smaller issues stem from.

Issue #1: This movie does not exist in the same universe as the original two films yet is still very self conscious about it existing. This doesn’t bother everybody, but it definitely bothered me. By making this its own stand alone film, this go around has to retell the Ghostbusters origin story from scratch and spend a lot of energy doing it. It repeats beat by beat scenes from the original movie with very subtle “unique” twists. This isn’t a structural issue (because it worked great in the first film) but then the movie additionally is packed with cameos of the entire original cast as “jokes”. Only one or two of these cameos actually works but most of the time the extent of the joke is “look, it’s one of the people from the original movie… laugh now please.”

Issue #2: The relationships established between the 4 Ghostbusters are extremely rushed and don’t really change that much from there. Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wig) and Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) are former best friends. They stopped being best friends for… reasons? Erin re-enters Abby’s life to ask her to stop the publication of a book that they wrote years ago and discovers that she’s basically been replaced by Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon), an eccentric but brilliant inventor who only services the story to mumble weird asides and introduce interchangeably forgettable gadgets that will only be used once. After less than 10 minutes Abby and Erin are friends/business partners because they saw a ghost and their estranged relationship is almost never mentioned again. That is until the end of the film when Erin has to make the choice to potentially sacrifice herself for her friend…. except at that point it’s not much of a choice as they’ve been friends for 99.9% of the film. This isn’t a big character moment or choice as much as it’s a quick wrap up to a problem the Ghostbusters let happen in the first place when they sat for hours instead of chasing the bad guy down the street (not to mention letting him grow to the size of a skyscraper before actually zapping him). The final piece of the group comes in Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones) who exclaims after joining the group and looking for a ghost down a hallway that she “thought she was joining a book group”. And this is after she witnessed a ghost at her subway job… twice.

Issue #3: For a movie that’s trying so hard to be different they literally have just created four female characters that are attempts at being direct duplicates of the original cast. This ends up being more of a disservice than anything and causes some weird character issues. If these are new characters, treat them as such.

ghostbusters-pic-4

For reference, here’s who represents who:

Abby is Ray
Erin is Peter
Holtzmann is Egon
Patty is Winston

The original film was a tale for one sarcastic guy and his 3 co-workers, all playing the straight man to an outlandish situation. Sure Ray, Egon and Winston have some hilarious lines… but every line is delivered with complete sincerity. They don’t have time for jokes, they’re here to catch ghosts and are firmly grounded in doing so. The audience has a place of perspective from which to watch the fantastic story play out.

This new movie has no straight man. The closest we have is Erin but even she is too goofy for her own good and is made less respectable in situations in which she mistakes windows for sliding doors. Holtzmann is too silly to be the “Egon”, which would be fine if they made her more of a 3-dimensional character than just a weird Egon. McKinnon’s performance is getting a lot of praise and it’s super deserved because it was a huge risk but it could have been so much more relatable if it had any depth or history to it. She’s the same unpredictable question mark at the end of the story as she is when Erin first meets her.

gb_headshot_thumbs_gb2016_03-1

The most offensive issue comes in Patty as Winston. In the original film Winston was a man who didn’t believe in ghosts. He just needed a job. Some of the best moments in the original film was Winston being the normal guy coming to terms with lots of new information. In the remake, Patty discovers a ghost and calls the Ghostbusters for help. That’s perfectly fine. Then She asks to join the group. This is also fine. Then on their first mission with the team she’s mumbling to herself about “I thought this was gonna be a book club and now I’m fighting ghosts”. What?!? There is no other reason for this line to exist for this character beyond “She’s the Winston”. Even when the character is actually the most different from its male counterpart, they still write dialogue for her that’s more fitting for Winston. This is even more absurd based on the fact that just before this mission she got them a vehicle for the equipment and uniforms… TO CATCH GHOSTS! Why in the hell is this character unaware of what she signed up for after having dealt with one TWICE in the subway?

That in a nut-shell are my 3 major issues. And they’re big ones. The new Ghostbusters is a film that wants to make its own name for itself but can’t get out from under the shadow of the original.

So why not just accept that the original films existed in this universe and start from there? Why must every reboot be a remake?

Here’s my take on the first 20 minutes of the film that would quickly fix some of these issues. And remember, I’ve never made a movie, I’m just writing how marrying these two stories together could work and how it would fix a lot of issues.

Imagine if the new Ghostbusters film opened with the original commercial from the first Ghostbusters movie. The year is 1990 and we pull back to reveal a trio of girls having a sleepover. These girls are 10 year old Erin, Abby and their eccentric friend Jillian Spenlger. Yes, I’m turning Holtzmann into a relative of Egon because if you’re going to make her character a female equivalent him anyways let’s just make her a relative and have a reason why they share the same tendencies. The three of them are sharing ghost stories and maybe even make a reference to how cool it is that Jillian’s uncle is a Ghostbuster.

Suddenly weird things begin to happen in the house and they experience a real life ghost. The three are bonded by this scary moment and the credits roll.

We then jump to modern day New York.

The three remaining Ghostbusters are looking around their offices reminiscing about Egon (who has passed away) and discussing how the business has become a money pit. There hasn’t been a ghost in New York for over 20 years and their equipment is extremely dangerous after years of being inactive. On top of that, with no ghosts to bust they can barely afford the rent on the building.

It’s at this time that Jillian enters the firehouse. She has inherited Egon’s quarter of the business and actually wants to join the team.

gb2

Peter, Ray and Winston decide that Jillian could be the ultimate solution to the financial albatross that is The Ghostbusters and they do her one better. They’ll give her their shares as well and make her the sole owner. This is admittedly a crude trick but we can make sure that all three get something bad in return. There’s a joke in the current film where Patti, Abby and Holtzmann are attacked by a giant Stay Puft Marshmellow Man balloon that keeps them pinned down. Instead of that happening to the female Ghostbusters we could make it that Peter, Ray and Winston decide to ultimately help the girls out only to get trapped under the balloon and be rendered old and useless. The four female Ghostbusters simply pop the balloon and save them, clearly stating that they are the newer, better models (take that, internet trolls).

Jillian excitedly calls her friends Abby and Erin to join her so they can continue their ghost hunting excitement. But they have since all but forgotten their experience 25 years ago. Much like in Ghostbusters 2, the two try to convince Jillian that her uncle was a scam artist who tricked New York into believing in ghosts for profit. But the mystery of a ghost reappearance reinvigorates them when Jillian is asked to investigate the historical site from the beginning of the film.

From this point on we can start to introduce our villain, who should have ties to the history of the Ghostbusters, and pick up right where we meet Patty in the current film. Most of the movie can play out the same way from this point except the villain actually has weight beyond being a random angry kid from Reddit.

By making these changes you immediately tie the film to the original films that the current version is already self conscious of, except now the cameos serve a purpose beyond being gags. It also removes the 20 minutes of retelling how the Ghostbusters were formed and avoids some of the weird missing elements of Erin and Abby’s friendship.

Since the equipment is still old and beat up, it still allows us to keep some of the more entertaining segments of the girls “testing out Jillian’s equipment” but also allows us to bypass some of the more obnoxious elements of the film where everyone but the younger section of the audience (and since this is the first PG-13 Ghostbusters film don’t tell me that’s who it’s specifically aimed at) has heard this dialogue and seen this before.

At the end of the day, what’s done is done. The movie is out there and it’s a hit. There will definitely be a sequel and honestly that’s a good thing. The main cast has fantastic chemistry and I’d be more than thrilled to see what a sequel would be like now that the tedious work of reestablishing the Ghostbusters has been done. I just hope that they now take things in a new fresh direction rather than continuing to pay fan service to films that their audience already has on their shelves at home.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 14 years since the first Ratchet & Clank game released on the PS2. What was even harder to believe at the time was what a legendary series it would become. In what was a golden age for its genre, Ratchet has endured long after mascots like Jak and Daxter and Sly Cooper bowed out of the spotlight, (although the latter has attempted a comeback in recent years.) After over a dozen sequels and spinoffs across four different platforms, Sony and developer Insomniac have decided that it was time to revisit the duo’s roots. In conjunction with the upcoming film based on the franchise, Ratchet & Clank comes to the PS4 as a complete reboot of the original title, making some modern adjustments to go with its new take on the story. While a reboot felt unnecessary to me at first, the series’ PS4 debut serves as more than a simple do over. What we get is a love letter to the fans who have stuck through this decades plus journey while reintroducing the Lombax and his robot pal to new eyes, creating what ends up being one of the best 3D platformers in years.

Ratchet & Clank Screen 4

Can a simple mechanic save the galaxy?

Told through Captain Quark’s perspective in a scenario that’s different from the film, the square jawed hero takes us back to the days before the titular duo were an inseparable pair. Ratchet is a simple mechanic with big dreams of joining the Galactic Rangers, a team of interstellar heroes who protect the galaxy from any threat that may rise. When tryouts come to Ratchet’s home planet, he takes the chance to become something greater, (or at least to try and impress Quark, his hero and leader of the team.) Meanwhile, a defective Warbot who would go on to be known as Clank overhears his creators discuss their intentions to invade the Rangers’ home planet and take them out so their plan to destroy planets will go unchecked. Since the tiny robot failed to inherit the malicious intent of his brethren, (as well as their height,) he escapes the factory in an attempt to warn the Rangers of what was coming to them. After crash landing on Ratchet’s planet, the pair team up to save the galaxy from some of the most nefarious criminals in the system, all while impressing the Rangers in the process.

As great as the original Ratchet & Clank was, its control scheme has not aged well, leading future games to adopt a more traditional third person shooter method that revolves around strafing. No remake worth its bolts would keep these flaws unchecked, which is why the first thing you’ll notice with this latest game is how easy it is to move around. As a platformer/shooter hybrid, attacking waves of enemies and swapping weapons with a tap of the control pad while jumping out of the way of danger is as seamless as its ever been. As more weapons are unlocked, your quick select options can be customized so you can have easy access to any four weapons at any given time. When ammo is running low however, a solid swing from Ratchet’s trademark Omniwrench still does the trick. One of the most rewarding aspects of Ratchet & Clank is how accustomed you’ll become with each type of weapon and movement, especially as more options become available to you.

Speaking of options, the series has become synonymous with its over the top weapons over the years, and this reboot is no exception. Acting as a “best of” list for longtime fans, the weapons available span the entire series, with a few new weapons to boot. Staples of the PS3 games such as the pistol-like Combuster, the Groovitron, a disco ball that forces enemies near it to dance uncontrollably, and the trash talking battle companion, Mr. Zurkon, join PS2 classics like the Glove of Doom, a bomb that summons self destructing robots, and the Sheepinator, a beam that turns any enemy it hits into a sheep. New weapons like the Pixelator, a shotgun-esque weapon that gives enemies an 8-bit makeover, round out one of the most exciting weapons lineups in the series to date. Encouraging players to switch up which weapons they use, the level up system from past games returns, making it so each weapon gets stronger as you destroy more enemies with them. In addition, extra boosts can be purchased with Raritanium, where you’ll pay to fill in a board where each space adds a perk, such as extra damage or ammo. When these perks surround a hidden boost, buying all the ones around it will unlock extra surprises, making them even stronger. The would-be rangers are further complimented by gadgets such as the jet pack from Into The Nexus, and the 02 mask from the original, so you can explore both the air and sea, so there’s never a shortage on new tools to try out.

Ratchet & Clank Screen 5

You’ll have to get creative with your gear to take out the worst of Drek’s army.

Thankfully, there is plenty to explore with all your tools. More so than any other game in the series thus far, Insomniac makes the most out of the series’ PS4 debut with some of the richest environments in the series to date, each one littered with enemies and hidden areas with only occasional slowdown. Featuring a mixture of the original planets from the series’ PS2 debut to brand new areas original to the film and game, even repeated areas are either partially, or fully rebuilt. Each planet is so different from the last, that they’re always a joy to visit, which is emphasized by the game’s gorgeous visuals. Flying up as high as I could and surveying the landscape was one of my favorite things to do on the planets that allowed it, really giving you a sense of how big the game really is. When taking the character models, which rival their CG film counterparts on occasion, and you have what’s easily one of the best looking games on the PS4.

One feat that I found particularly admirable was how the game’s script made it look easy to mix in the right amount of nostalgia with new content, making it feel familiar without ever feeling like a retread. The top notch voice acting and witty script continues to impress after all these years, with Quark’s charming stupidity once again taking center stage. New characters bring in some Hollywood talent to join James Arnold Taylor’s Ratchet and David Kaye’s Clank, including Bella Thorn, John Goodman, Rosario Dawson and Sylvester Stallone. In fact, franchise purists can rest assured that aside from the game’s main bad guy, Chairman Drek, who is now voiced by Paul Giamatti, all the returning characters have kept their actors in both the games and films, while the new voices fit right in with the characters we’ve come to love.

Ratchet & Clank Screen 6

Ratchet rarely takes itself seriously, and it’s better off for it.

If the story content isn’t enough of a callback for you, (on top of the handful of Resistance references for the hardcore Insomniac fan,) unlockable trading cards can be found throughout the game, each of which contain details on both this, and past games. Collecting all the cards in a series provides extra boosts like bolt, card and Raritanium increases, as well as access to stronger versions of your weapons, so even if a walk down memory lane isn’t your thing, at least there’s that extra incentive to find them. To make finding them easier, five duplicates can be traded for the card of your choice, so you’ll want to remain on the lookout for as long as possible.

It’s easy to see that the developers know that there’s plenty we’ve come to love with this series, much of which returns to tickle our nostalgia. Certain scenes, characters and interactions will remind you of some of the charm of 2002 while making you forget that you’ve visited these worlds years before until these callbacks pop up. And yet, for every reminder of the originals, like the plumber you meet in your first full world or the hoverboard races which are even more thrilling now as they were back then, you’ll come across new battles like dog fights in space and a city defense mission where you’ll use magnets to hurl enemy robots back at their ships. It’s moments like these that really make it feel like the series has been fully realized for the current generation.

Ratchet & Clank Screen 1

Fights can get pretty intense.

Still, it can’t be all action all the time, which is where Clank’s solo missions take center stage. These puzzle inspired areas ask players to transform helpful robots in the area either into generators, bridges or springs in order to power nearby doors and open the exits. Simple on the surface, yet more complex as the game progresses, these distractions are challenging enough without becoming overbearing, only popping up a few times throughout the game’s story. That’s not to say Clank can’t handle himself in a fight, since some of the most visually impressive moments in an already gorgeous game come from when he must outwit the Warbot commander, Stallone’s Victor Von Ion. These short, but sweet sequences have Clank running towards the camera as Ion slices apart the corridors they’re running through in order to destroy the defect with his beam blade. Everything from the sparks, laser effects and fire looks so good while being fun to play, that you’ll be disappointed that these sequences aren’t featured more often.

Thankfully, disappointments are few and far between with this reboot, although one aspect that might come off as divisive is the changes to the story. Surprisingly acting as an origin story for more than just Ratchet and Clank, the big twist at the end is twofold this time around, introducing characters that originally debuted later in the series’ timeline. Unfortunately, that comes with concessions to what would become my favorite character arc throughout the games, fundamentally changing what would go on to happen in the sequels. That puts the game in a strange position because if this reboot is a one and done game to coincide with the movie’s release, then the story works better to a degree, setting up story elements for the future of the franchise. If it isn’t a one off and the whole series will begin branching out again from here, I don’t see it playing out on the track its on without completely invalidating the second game and part of the third. Considering how much I enjoyed this take on the series, knowing that the changes to the story closes off some of the best parts of potential future installments isn’t ideal, although this is more of a nitpick than a damning flaw. Still, I enjoyed the way the twist was handled in the original more so than in the reboot. You know, minus the whole Ratchet being a jerk to Clank part, which was thankfully omitted.

Outside of these story nitpicks, the only real flaws I encountered were technical issues such as “falling” off of a cliff when stuck between boxes, landing on certain mountains that were programmed like lava, and some poorly placed checkpoints that will force you to replay large fights, all because you missed that one guy stuck in the corner at the end of the third wave. While length might be an issue for anyone who is looking to only complete the story, I got a good 12-ish hours out of it on a hard mode run where I found half of the 28 Golden Bolts and leveled up all the weapons, which is pretty good for a platformer. When you consider I still had numerous collectables to find and side missions to complete, a 100% run was still hours away. For those who want the full experience however, a type of new game plus called “Challenge Mode” asks players to run through the game again while getting hit as little as possible. The more enemies you kill without taking damage, the higher your bolt multiplier, which you’ll need to take full advantage of if you want to buy the Omega versions of your weapons, which can be upgraded even further for maximum destruction. While playing the same game multiple times isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, Insomniac provided plenty of content for those who enjoy exploring every nook and cranny of the game’s world. As mentioned earlier, there’s plenty to explore.

Ratchet & Clank Screen 3

Just so we’re clear, this game is gorgeous.

Ratchet and Clank has been advertised as “the game, based on the movie, based on the game!”, but it’s so much more than that. On one hand, it might be the best “game adaptation” of a film to date, although that might not be fair to compare since it has almost 15 years of games worth of experience to build on. But what is fair to say, is that this release is not only one of the highlights of a growing PS4 library, but possibly the best game in Insomniac’s long history with the franchise. This game could have been a quick nostalgia trip that capitalized on the movie. What it ended up being was a nod to new and old fans alike as a shining example of what a reboot should be. I might be slightly nervous on the narrative direction the game is headed in, the formula is admittedly feeling a little samey despite its many upgrades, and small technical glitches hurt a near perfect package, but fans of platformers, fans of shooters, fans of the series… heck, fans of gaming can’t go wrong with picking up Ratchet and Clank, and have a chance to rescue the galaxy all over again.

tl;dr

+ Ratchet and Clank are back with plenty of new content to go with a dash of nostalgia.

+ The platforming is as fluid as ever, with both new and old weapons to keep combat interesting.

+ Plenty of worlds to explore, each with huge areas, waves of enemies and secrets to uncover.

+ Side missions like Clank’s puzzle stages and dog fights keep the game feeling fresh.

+ A new game plus mode that will more than double the standard length.

– Some story changes make us nervous for the future.

– Small technical issues pop up from time to time.

– Though offset by the Challenge Mode, those looking for a one and done game will be done with the story in a weekend.

– While great, the formula is feeling a little familiar.

Final Score: 4.5/5

Great news for those eagerly awaiting new info on 2017’s DuckTales reboot.

This morning, Disney finally pulled back the curtain a bit to finally reveal what the reboot of the popular 1987 Disney Afternoon show will look like. Check it out below!

DuckTales Reboot

From the looks of it, the new style looks like a page from the original comic book come to life. It also looks as if Donald will be joining along for the adventure this time (as he did in the original comics.) I for one am excited to see this new, and more faithful take on this beloved property. What are your thoughts though? Are you excited for this reboot?

Cartoon Network has just released the first official teaser video for the new Powerpuff Girls reboot.

The clip centers around the girls fighting Manboy, A villain who wishes to turn all of Townsville into Mansville. Will the girls be able to stop him? Judging from the clip, yeah they can probably handle him. Check it out for yourself! Are you excited for this new reboot?

The post apocalyptic Zorro reboot film has just landed it’s director. In other news, there is a post apocalyptic Zorro reboot film in the works.

Sobini Films announced today, in a press release over at ComingSoon, that Gravity screenwriter Jonas Cuaron will be writing and directing the upcoming Zorro reboot.

Sobini Films’ CEO Mark Amin and  Lantica Media’s CEO Antonio Gennari had this to say:

When I saw Desierto, I was impressed with Jonás’s command of action and suspense, his great visual eye, and the strong performances he elicited from his actors. We are very fortunate to have Jonás on this film. His love of cinema is evident in his work and he is very talented in his ability to tell a compelling story. We look forward to seeing where his vision will take us.

If “post apocalyptic Zorro reboot film” sounds familiar to you then it does. As far back as 2013, 20th Century Fox was in the process of creating their own Zorro reboot. Tentatively titled Zorro: Reborn , it was set in a near future southern California. You may remember the pitch trailer that director Ricardo de Montreuil made as a proof of concept of the film. You can see that below.

There is no word if the above Zorro: Reborn pitch trailer has ANY barring on the upcoming reboot (currently titled Z).

The character of Zorro goes all the way back to 1919. Zorro is the masked identity of rich playboy Don Diego de la Vega. He would don a black mask, cape and brandish a sword. He was the protector of the common man, and was most likely a huge influence in the creation of Batman.

The character has been a point of contention for copyright holders, as the character himself is public domain.

Principle filming of begins this Summer. No release date has been announced.

Briefly: We’ve been hearing pretty constant rumours about the long in development Tomb Raider film reboot for a number of years now, and we finally have our first bit of real, actual news about the project.

Nope, after all these years, it’s not our Laura Croft, a side character, or even a plot synopsis (though the film is said to take place over Lara’s first adventure), but instead Warner Bros. has revealed just who will helm the film, and it’s The Wave director Roar Uthaug.

I haven’t yet had an opportunity to see the Norwegian disaster flick, but I have heard some very positive things about it. We’re still waiting to officially find out who will write the film, but THR notes that Transformers 5 screenwriter Geneva Robertson-Dworet is in talks to write the script.

I’m actually really excited to see the potential for this film. Square-Enix’ recent reboot and just released Rise of the Tomb Raider have taken the series to heights that I couldn’t have even imagined (I’m seriously debating picking up another Xbox One just to play the game), and if some of that re-invigoration could trickle down into this reboot, we’d be in for a real treat.

Then again, it is a video game movie, so I wouldn’t hold you breath!

Are you down for a Tomb Raider reboot? Who would you like to see play the new Lara Croft? Sound out below!

It’s still hard for me to believe that after 13 long years, The X-Files is returning to television. This isn’t a stinkin’ reboot either, but bonafide extra-terrestrial, supernatural mysteries featuring our beloved Mulder and Scully.

Today, Fox debuted the first teaser for the 6-episode mini-series. While it reveals nothing of note (some sort of crash, bodies being dragged away, etc), it’s still exciting as hell, because guys, The X-Files is coming back!

Take a look at the teaser below, and let us know what you’re doing to prepare for the January 24th premiere!

https://youtu.be/CFJnWwh12j0

IT’S MORPHIN’ TIME.

Well, in 15 months. Which means that Lionsgate really needs to get moving on production, which starts with them finding actors (and a director). The film founds its writers back in July of last year, and TheWrap has learned that Project Almanac director Dean Israelite has entered negotiations to direct the anticipated film.

Project Almanac has to be one of the most original films that I’ve seen this year, dealing with a high school student and his friends, who uncover blueprints for a mysterious device with limitless potential, inadvertently putting lives in danger. It did a fantastic job of showcasing what real people would likely do with a time machine, and it featured a cast of unknowns whose chemistry really made Project Almanac memorable. It seemed to slip under the radar of most, but I’d definitely recommend giving it a shot.

Israelite has also been tapped to direct a WarGames reboot.

How would you feel about Dean in the director’s chair? I feel like an up-and-comer with a history of working with (and making a film for) youth can only be good for a Power Rangers film. Unless you want it to look like the BOOTLEG UNIVERSE version.

Briefly: You can stop whining about the all-female Ghostbusters now, jerks.

Deadline has learned that Sony has formed “Ghostcorps, a new production company whose principals include original Ghostbusters architects Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd; they will have offices at Sony with the mission to scare up branding opportunities based on the 1984 comedy classic.”

Yep, so we’re getting another Ghostbusters film to go with Paul Feig’s 2016 reboot (which hasn’t even started production yet).

Community and Captain America: The Winter Soldiers directors Joe and Anthony Russo will helm the film, while Iron Man 3 (ugh) writer Drew Pierce will write the script.

Apparently, Channing Tatum is one of the producers on the film, and will likely star (since he’s so good at launching franchises).

“We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment,” Reitman told Deadline. “This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.”

So, after not having a Ghostbusters film in over 25 years, the market sounds like it could be pretty saturated, pretty quickly.

Are you down for even more Ghostbusters? Or was one reboot enough? Sound out below!

The world went wild a few weeks back when the cast for Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot was revealed. Wild, as in, showered Feig, the cast, and the idea with boatloads of praise… and buttloads of hate. I try to reserve judgement until I actually see a finished product, but what do I know anyways?

In any case, NEW Ghostbuster Leslie Jones has uploaded a few photos from Sunday night’s SNL40 after party. One of the pics showcases the actress with Ghostbusters co-stars Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, and Kate McKinnon. They’re definitely in party mode and not Ghostbusting mode, but it’s pretty interesting in any case.

Take a look at the photo below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the film. Ghostbusters hits theatres on July 22nd, 2016!

Briefly: Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot just got a release date, and we know know which lucky ladies of Hollywood will be the ones to don the sought-after Proton Packs.

First up, when we can see it:

And now, our starring ladies:

Yep, that’s Bridesmaid‘s Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, along with SNL‘s Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. The script is currently being written by director Paul Feig and The Heat (ugh) scribe Katie Dippold.

Are you down for the all female heroes? How about these females in particular? Sound out below!

Briefly: Already feeling mixed thoughts about next year’s Terminator: Genisys? A new batch of images for the film, along with a tiny teaser for a trailer set to release tomorrow, have been released online… and they may not sway you in the positive direction.

Sure, the images look very promo-y, and certainly don’t appear to be stills from the finished product, but to my untrained eye, they look super cheesy, which I’m not overly looking for in an anticipated Terminator film.

The teaser definitely looks better than any of these promo images, but it’s also really hard to judge something from 15 seconds of choice footage (not that we should really be judging the film at this point anyways).

In any case, take a look at everything below, and be sure to let us know if you’re looking forward to the film! Don’t forget to check back tomorrow for Terminator: Genisys‘ full trailer!

Briefly: 2016 is going to be a busy year. The year is filled with gigantic films like Cap 3, Batman v. Superman, Finding Dory, and Warcraft among dozens of others, and another huge release has just been announced for the cycle.

Lionsgate and Saban have revealed that Power Rangers will hit theatres on July 22nd, 2016.

Details on the film are still scarce (or non-existent), and the feature is still without a cast and director, but the script is coming from Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz while Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, Allison Shearmur and Roberto Orci will produce.

The first official synopsis for the film also debuted today, but it reveals nothing that we don’t already know:

From a story by Executive Producer Roberto Orci (TRANSFORMERS, STAR TREK, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2) and screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, THOR) comes a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world.

What do you hope to see in the film? Sound out in the comments below!

Briefly: I’m really looking forward to the next Terminator film. It’s got a stellar cast consisting of Arnold Schwarzenegger (of course), Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, Jason Clarke, JK Simmons, and many more. Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor is at the helm, and the film aims to be the start of a new trilogy that could not possibly end as poorly as the last one.

I’m still excited for the film, even if today it received an official, stupid subtitle. The rumoured title has been Terminator: Genesis for some time now, but now the film has officially been named Terminator: Genisys.

Yeah, I’m sure it’s got something to do with some tech company or similar entity, but still, it sounds pretty silly.

Production on the film has also wrapped, so longtime Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger said the following on his official Facebook page (try not to read it in his voice):

Hasta la vista, baby.
I want to thank the cast and crew of Terminator Genisys for a fantastic shoot. It was challenging, it was fun, and it was rewarding. From our director to the producers, from the camera team to catering, from visual effects to hair and makeup – we couldn’t have done it without you. I can’t wait to see our finished project and I know we’ll remind the fans why they fell in love with the Terminator. On July 1, 2015, I’ll be back.

Are you a fan of the title? Are you excited for the film? Sound out below!

Briefly: We still don’t know many details about Lionsgate and Saban’s recently announced Power Rangersbut we now know just who will write the script.

X-Men: First Class and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles scribes Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz will write the film, while Star Trek and Transformers screenwriter Robert Orci will help develop the story and executive produce.

We’ll be sure to fill you in as we learn more about the project, but as THR notes, the film will “completely re-envision the Rangers, a group of high school kids who are infused with unique superpowers but must harness and use those powers as a team if they have any hope of saving the world.”

Are you looking forward to the film? Anyone you would like to see take the role of a Ranger? Sound out below!

Just hitting the Geeksape news desk is some radical news! Lionsgate and Saban Entertainment are joining forces to bring us a new live action Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie!

Launched in America over 20 years ago, the Power Rangers have been a staple of children’s saturday morning television every week. From dinosaurs to ninjas and from space police to jungle animals, they’ve gone pretty much everywhere.

Details are vague; is this a reboot/re-envisioning of the show from 1993? OR, is this an entirely brand new narrative. The world will have to wait.

Briefly: The cast of Alan Taylor’s Terminator: Genesis (or whatever it ends up being called) is growing once more.

THR has reported that Spider-Man‘s J.K. Simmons has joined the project as “a weary and alcoholic detective who has followed a bizarre case involving Sarah Connor and robots for more than three decades.”

Little information on the film has been revealed at this point, but we of course know that Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke, and Jason Clarke are starring in the film, which will hit theatres on June 26th, 2015.

Are you looking forward to the reboot? Would you have preferred that they’d continued Salvation? Sound out below!

About a year ago, anime fans had plenty to be excited about when we all learned that Sailor Moon would be returning with a new anime adaptation. Since then we’ve waited… and waited… We haven’t heard much of a peep since, aside from being told that it’s still coming.

Well, it seems like our patience is about to pay off! A quick look at the Sailor Moon animation web site greets visitors with a countdown that seems to coincide with the AnimeJapan trade show. While no details are given aside from an image of the moon, it has to be the new show’s formal reveal. It just has to be!

If you couldn’t tell, I’m very excited for this show to debut. Sailor Moon was my favorite anime before I knew what anime was, and little did I know that those early mornings watching magical girls fight monsters would help shape the interests I carry on to this day. Including high school girls. *ahem*

Briefly: We already know that Emilia Clarke is our new Sarah Connor, and that Jason Clarke is John Connor in the upcoming Terminator reboot. Today, Paramount Pictures revealed the new Kyle Reese.

It’s Jai Courtney, who will soon show up in Divergent, and recently starred in I, Frankenstein and A Good Day to Die Hard.

No plot details have been announced at this time (but it’s probably not the awesome sounding 1940’s-1950’s origin story), but as was revealed before, this will be the first film in a new Terminator trilogy.

Is Courtney a good fit for the role? Or is there someone else you’d rather see? Let us know! The yet-untitled Terminator reboot hits theatres on June 26th, 2015!

Briefly: The mother of dragons is now the mother of John Connor.

That’s right. Game of Thrones Emilia Clarke has just been cast in Alan Taylor’s Terminator reboot as Sarah Connor.

This is the first official casting news from the project aside from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to the franchise. Deadline reports that Zero Dark Thirty‘s Jason Clarke is still in negotiations for the role of John Connor.

We’ll be sure to keep you up to date on the reboot as further casting is announced. The film is slated to hit theatres in July 2015, so I’d imagine that we’ll hear more very soon.

Do you think the Clarke will be able to stand up to the likes of Linda Hamilton and Lena Heady, or is there someone else you’d rather have seen in the role? Sound out below!

There is no fate but what we make for ourselves: the Terminator franchise is about to change immensely.

Skydance Productions, Annapurna Pictures and Paramount Pictures have just announced that a rebooted Terminator will launch on June 26th, 2015. Set to be the first film in a stand-alone trilogy, the reboot will not be connected to the already established timeline that started with 1984’s The Terminator.

The reboot is yet to sign a director, but Laeta Kalorgridis (Avatar, Shutter Island) and Patrick Lussier (Drive Angry) are currently writing the script.

Interestingly enough, even though Arnold Schwarzenegger confirmed earlier this month that he was attached to the project, his role is not mentioned in the press release. Also, being that this is a different timeline and trilogy altogether, it’s unlikely that the rumoured 1940’s/1950’s origin story will actually make it onscreen.

Take a look at the full press release below, and let us know what you think of the news!

Skydance Productions, Annapurna Pictures and Paramount Pictures have jointly announced they will partner on a rebooted “TERMINATOR” movie, to be released by Paramount Pictures on June 26, 2015.

The first in a stand-alone trilogy, “TERMINATOR” will be produced by Megan Ellison of Annapurna and David Ellison of Skydance. Dana Goldberg and Paul Schwake of Skydance will serve as executive producers. Laeta Kalorgridis (“Avatar,” “Shutter Island”) and Patrick Lussier (“Drive Angry”) are attached to write the screenplay.

Launched in 1984 with star Arnold Schwarzenegger as the title character, “TERMINATOR” spanned 3 subsequent films, which have earned over $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

David Ellison most recently executive produced, along with his partners at Paramount, “World War Z,” “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” and “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”. A 5th installment of in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise is in active development, along with a 3rd film in the “G.I. Joe” franchise, among other films.

Megan Ellison most recently produced the Academy Award®-nominated “Zero Dark Thirty,” “The Master” and executive produced “Spring Breakers” via her Annapurna Pictures banner and has David O. Russell’s “American Hustle,” Spike Jonze’s “Her,” and Bennett Miller’s “Foxcatcher” set for release later this year.

How could Universal NOT bring Van Damme back for this? Did The Expendables 2 not prove how incredibly versatile the man still is?

THR has learned that Universal has begun development on a reboot of the 1994 hit, Timecop. The original movie, based on the Dark Horse comic, is widely regarded as Van Damme’s best film. It spawned both a short-lived television series, and a direct to DVD sequel.

Marc Shmuger and Tom McNulty will produce the film, which is being treated as a complete reimagining, and is currently in search of a writer. No further information has been revealed about the project, but we’ll keep you updated as we learn more.

How do you feel about the news? Who would you like to see in the role of Walker?

Don’t feed them after midnight. Gremlins are coming back!

After hearing Stone-Cold Steve Austin on a recent episode of Geekscape claiming that he was working on a new Gremlins I thought….yeah right!

Bloody Disgusting just got the official word that a Gremlins reboot is moving forward at Warner Bros., and that Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) is attached to produce the film along with David Katzenberg.

Gremlins has hit that perfect sweet spot where it has been long enough since its release that you either remember it and want to see a new take, or you belong to an entirely new generation that simply hasn’t had the pleasure of experiencing the original film.

Gremlins came out in 1984 and was (and remains) wonderful to watch. I’m sincerely looking forward to this remake, and can’t wait to see more from the project.

Warner Bros. Pictures is currently negotiating with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment to reboot the beloved Gremlins. Apparently, this isn’t the first attempt to reboot the 1984 horror comedy and the numerous attempts in the past have all fallen through.

However, sources are claiming that this time around it’s looking good and we may need to be warned again not to give Mogwai’s water after midnight. There’s no further details regarding the project, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated as more is learned about it.

Did you know that Universal was planning to reboot The Mummy franchise?

Deadline broke the news today that Universal Pictures has set their sights on Total Recall‘s Len Wiseman. Jon Spaihts (Promethius) is currently working on the script, and the film is shooting for a Summer 2014 release.

Film producer Alex Kurtzman in a Deadline interview had this to say about the project:

“When I first heard Universal was relaunching this, that is the image that popped into my head, the period tale, the old monster, but when Bob and Alex pitched it, there was a great new take and approach, and a very different mummy as well,” Wiseman told me. “It’s a darker twist on the material, a scarier version.”

The film will apparently take place in more modern times than previous iterations, which is a very interesting move. The previous franchise took place around the 1920’s.

Wiseman also had this to say about the film and its title character:

“One of the things that interested me with this mummy is, he’s still in essence a man,” Wiseman said. “They haven’t turned his brain into a monster brain. He still has a personality and is very cunning and calculating. He’s a true character in any form, and in creature form, even if he is that staggering creature, it becomes more important that he’s a thinking, calculating person.”

I totally forgot about this franchise. I don’t think I’ve seen any of the titles since The Mummy 2 was in theatres. A modern take is a cool idea, but I’m a bit wary of it coming from the writer of Promethius and the director of this summer’s Total Recall, as neither of those turned out too hot.

What are your thoughts? Looking forward to this one? Hoping for Brendan Fraser to return?

Just earlier today set photos leaked online from RoboCop giving a first look at the new suit. So, I am going to go ahead and say this and I await the backlash. But the new RoboCop suit is fucking bad ass in my opinion. Well, one of the new suits that is being that there is more than one in the movie. Remember that part guys. Here’s an even better look at the new suit as well as some more set photos including the first look at his new car thanks the guys at Bleeding Cool.

An up close look at the suit:

And a new teaser poster courtesy of Cine1:

In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy (Kinnaman) is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

RoboCop is hitting theaters August of 2013.

Sources over at Vulture have learned that the first project that Disney has on their agenda under new studio chief Alan Horn will be a new version of the classic from 1991, The Rocketeer. The original movie was directed by Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger)  and dealt with a racing pilot named Cliff Secord (Billy Campbell) who discovers a rocket-pack prototype in his stunt plane, and becomes a metal-mask wearing hero.

The Rocketeer was based off the comic published in 1982 by the now defuncy, Pacific Comics, and was conceived by artist Dave Stevens as an homage to the serial action heroes of the 1930’s. The Rocketeer was also somewhat of a failure at the box office, but was definitely loved by comic book fans. So, will the second time around be a charm or will we see another John Carter incident? The studio will soon be meeting with various writers to come up with a take.

Set photos and some concept art from the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road have made their way online. Filming on the upcoming reboot started last month in Africa. In the upcoming reboot of 1979’s Mad Max we will see the road warrior, played by Tom Hardy this time around, caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by the Imperator Furiosa played by Charlize Theron. The film also stars Nicholas Hoult and Zoe Kravityz(X-Men: First Class), Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (Transformers: Dark Of The Moon), Nathan Jones (Fearless) and Riley Keough (Magic Mike). Check out the photos full of post-apocalyptic goodness from the set below!
