Many of today’s adult nerds can remember watching Power Rangers on their clunky television sets as children. The Amercan-ized version of the first season  is getting a very swanky movie remake and I can imagine many of us will be lining up to buy tickets. A shiny, new trailer was released today for the film. Let’s have a look.

With its somewhat darker tone, I feel like the film is catering more to the older fans who grew up with the series. That is not to say it looks bad by any means, quite the opposite in fact. I had my doubts initially but this trailer has piqued my interest in the title.

What was your reaction to this trailer? Let us know in the comments!

It’s that wonderful time of the week again, new comic book day! Choosing what to read can be daunting (and expensive!). Don’t worry though, Geekscape has you covered. Each week we give a few best bets for a comic book that you’re sure to enjoy. Let’s get into it!

DC

DC is on such a high right now. Their Batman books are solid, their Superman books are solid. Young Animal is maturing. They’re pumping out tons of awesome content, but this week there is one title that jumps off my pull list…

Justice League/Power Rangers #1
📝 Tom Taylor
🎨 Stephen Byrne, Eduardo Nunez

Two of comics greatest teams team up for the very first time! Something terrible has happened in Angel Grove! When the Command Center is breached and the teleporters are damaged, Zack is flung into another universe, where he’s mistaken for a villain by a mysterious masked vigilante. Can the other Power Rangers get to their friend in time to save him from Batman? Co-published with BOOM! Studios.

Well, I’m sure we’ve all thought of it before in either our dreams, action figure battles, or discussions with friends and now we finally get to see it unfold in comic books! That’s right, it’s Power Rangers + Justice League. Need I say more?

Marvel

Jessica Jones #4
📝 Brian Michael Bendis
🎨 Michael Gaydos

Jessica Jones latest case has revealed a new hidden evil in the Marvel Universe. An evil so terrifying she was willing to rip her family apart to save them from it. But was the sacrifice enough? Another all-new blistering chapter of Marvel’s premier detective.

This series is getting good. It’ll scratch the itch while you wait for more Marvel Netflix content.

In recurring theme this year, Lionsgate has decided to release five more character posters ahead of the ‘Power Rangers’ reboot panel at New York Comic Con, which takes place Saturday at 2 PM.

The ‘Power Rangers’ film stars Dacre Montgomery (A Few Less Men) as Jason the Red Ranger, RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Billy the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott (The 33) as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Becky G (Empire) as Trini the Yellow Ranger, Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Zack the Black Ranger, and Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games) as Rita Repulsa. In addition Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) has been announced to play Zordon with Bill Hader (“Saturday Night Live) voicing Alpha 5.

‘Power Rangers’ will morph into theaters March 24, 2017.

The biggest license at Bandai’s booth at San Diego Comic-Con was easily Power Rangers. Merchandise from the series took up the majority of the booth’s real estate. And, I have to tell you, it is a good time to be a Power Rangers fan!

IMG_0372IMG_0374

While there were several items that limited in edition, the majority appeared to be open edition.

IMG_0419IMG_0414

Nostalgia was the name of the game with these toys. Many of the placards read “Legacy” on them and harkened back to the first several seasons of the show.

IMG_0401IMG_0377

Some of the toys on display will be exclusive to certain retailers, like Toys R’ Us or Walgreens. Those effected had the store’s emblem on the placard.

IMG_0223IMG_0228
Real talk: I love Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir so much. But, the merchandise on display, for the most part, disappointed me. The quality reminded me of those Sailor Moon dolls from the 90’s. They just don’t look enough like the characters, especially Adrien (there is something about his eyes that is off, too). The two-pack that was SDCC-exclusive seemed much better in terms of matching the design.

IMG_0222

The portion of the Miraculous toy selection that I liked a great deal was the plush assortment of Tikki and Plagg, the sidekicks /confidantes for Marinette and Adrien. I thought the pair were very cute and their size (6 inches tall) fit their characters nicely.

IMG_0392

One of the big draws for Bandai’s booth was the corner of Gashapon machines filled with Dragon Ball mini-figures. Quite a few attendees were excited about their inclusion. I even witnessed a fan working all four machines at once! That is some dedication, right there.

IMG_0383IMG_0239

Oh, did I mention there was giant plush of Tubbs the cat from Neko Atsume a.k.a. Kitty Collector? It wasn’t not for sale but visitors could pose with it and take pictures. Figures of the game’s lovable felines were also on display at the booth. Attendees had the opportunity to purchase a set of desktop figures starring some of the game’s stars.

IMG_0384

I personally know several people who will be excited about this one: a prototype of Dark Souls III‘s Artorias the Abysswalker along with concept art for the Faraam Knight. Both characters will be part of Banpresto’s DXF Figure line.

What items are you excited about? Let us know in the comments!

The upcoming 2017 Power Rangers film is seriously shaping up to be amazing. Everything we’ve seen from it so far has quelled any and all worry us fans have for the reboot.

Today SABAN released five character posters for San Diego Comic Con, and they are totally fucking awesome. Check them out below!

Simple and clean, but they really get the point across. Our beloved heroes from our youth are BACK! And God dammit don’t they all look fucking attractive.

Be sure to keep and eye out here for more #sdcc2016 coverage!

👎 – Skip, read at your own risk
👌 – Okay, not great, not bad, you might find something to like here
💪 – Great, highly recommended

A lot of great reads this past week, most of which weren’t from the big 2 publishers.

DC

DC’s Rebirth takes a week off but we did see the continuation of Action Comics and Detective Comics, as well as #1’s of Aquaman, The Flash, and Wonder Woman. All these stories are solid but none of them have earned must-read status.

👌 Action Comics #958
This is perhaps the most intimidating book if you are new to the DC Universe. We have a new Superman, a Lex Luthor Superman, and a Clark Kent who apparently isn’t a Superman. However, not a lot of that matters this issue because it’s mostly one great big battle with Doomsday!

👎 Detective Comics #935
In my opinion, this is the least interesting of DC’s new offerings. This book in particular starts out with something super exciting but then pulls the carpet out from beneath us and leaves us with a relatively uninteresting story that is struggling to find any identity.

👌 Aquaman #1
This may be my favourite of DC’s releases this week. Walker’s art on this is stellar. I was worried an Aquaman title could get weighed down by too much politics but so far Abnett is balancing the politics with equal parts action. The action sequences at the end of this issue were gorgeous, as the characters battle isn’t separated by panels but by the way the water flows.

👌 The Flash #1
This may also be my favourite of DC’s releases this week, I just can’t decide! Williamson is really focusing on the theme of despite the Flash’s speed, he isn’t able to be everywhere at once, and therefore can’t help everyone. For me this premise is interesting enough to explore for a few issues, but much like last week’s Batman #1, this book takes a twist at the end that leaves me wondering what the heck is going to happen next!

👎 Wonder Woman #1
It may not be a popular opinion but for whatever reason, this book just hasn’t worked for me yet. I don’t think it’s any fault of the creators, Rucka and Sharp, I think it’s just my unfamiliarity with the character of Wonder Woman. There are times during this issue where I feel completely lost and the story isn’t interesting enough to drive me to do any further research.

Marvel

More Civil Snore…

👎 Captain America – Sam Wilson #10
Another title that I read because of the Civil War II stamp on it, another title that I’m let down by. Aside from Rhode’s funeral, I’m unsure how this ties in at all. Don’t spend your time reading Spencer’s Marvel stuff, checkout The Fix instead!

👎 Civil War II – Choosing Sides #1
This book isn’t worth your money. I don’t have anything else to say.

Power Man and Iron Fist Cover
💪 Power Man and Iron Fist #5
Is it any coincidence that one of Marvel’s only books that isn’t a part of Civil War II is awesome? The fifth issue serves as more of a transition from the last arc to the next one. If you didn’t read this issue, you wouldn’t miss much but there are enough laughs in here to make it worth while.

Archie Comics

Archie Cover
💪 Archie #9
If a comic book has Mark Waid’s name on it, you ain’t going to regret reading it. I’ve discussed how great Archie is in previous Weekly Reads and the series continues to gain momentum. Archie Comics is doing such a great job with it’s IP right now, I don’t think they’re making anything that isn’t awesome!

Dark Horse

Dept H Cover
💪 Dept. H #3
Another title I’ve gushed over previously. The comic is as good as ever. This is a must read if you’re looking for a non superhero comic. Instead of gushing over the issue, I’ll talk about how awesome of a moment it was to see Cullen Bunn (writer of Harrow County, Uncanny X-Men) wrote into the letter page. Note: I only read the letter page of books that I love. Guys, what else do I have to say, this book is a must read! Matt’s writing is awesome, his love for comics comes through the pages, Sharlene’s watercolours are unlike anything else I’ve seen in comics. Love, love, love this book!

BOOM! Studios

Mighty-Morphin-Power-Rangers-004-Cover
💪 Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers #4
This series is better than I ever could have imagined. Perhaps I shouldn’t be giving it strong status because if you aren’t a Power Rangers fan this might not be up your alley, but I think you’d be surprised. Sure, this is a Power Rangers story but the themes of team building, trust, insecurity are something anyone can relate to. If you’re a Power Rangers fan, this book is a no brainer, if not, I think you still might be able to find something to love here.

OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD! Major news about Lionsgate’s 2017 Power Rangers Movie.

Today it was announced that none other than Walter White himself Bryan FREAKING Cranston will be returning to the Power Rangers series in order to play Zordon in the upcoming 2017 film. “But wait!”, you say, “did you just say returning?”Indeed I did stranger, indeed I did. Cranston is no stranger to the rangers as he used to voice Twin Man and the first appearance of Snizzard in the original series: Mighty Morphing Power Rangers.

In fact, Cranston left his impression on the series so well that the Blue Ranger, Billy Cranston was inspired directly inspired by the man himself. Are you excited for this new casting news, or are you a bit hesitant until an official photo is revealed? Tell us in the comments below!

Welcome to Weekly Reads! It’s your little dose of comic book goodness that focuses on some aspect of my comic book reading!

Oh boy, oh boy, a ton of books we are reading came out this week. Let’s jump into them!

Ongoing Reads

Black Panther #2 hit shelves, and I think I’m in a minority in thinking that this series is nothing special so far. Perhaps all the hype of Ta-Nehisi Coates penning it caused me to set some high expectations for the series that it just isn’t living up to for me. It seems the series is going to focus on a few characters; T’Challa of course, as well Shuri (his sister), Ayo (member of T’Challa’s royal guard) and probably a couple more. The problem in these first two issues is that the book jumps from setting to setting without giving us a chance to connect with the characters, after two issues I am invested in no one. I’m not jumping ship yet, but this is a tough book for me to recommend. Now, onto a book that I can’t recommend enough!

The Fix #2 is out and it picks up right where #1 left off. This series is just so damn entertaining. If you weren’t around when we discussed the first issue, the series is basically about two robbers who have a day job being cops, and you won’t believe the ways they use that to their advantage. The situations and character interactions that writer Nick Spencer has come up with are laugh-out-loud funny throughout the second issue. On the opposite side of the spectrum, he continues to build up how sadistic and unstable the series’ villain is shaping up to be. Guys. Gals. This is a must-read series!

I am so into this Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series. It’s so damn good. I grew up with the show, so I’m probably a little biased but this book holds up in ways the show doesn’t anymore. Prasetya’s art is phenomenal. His panels are so clean and the characters borderline on being manga-like but not? His work with the mystical elements (Rita’s henchmen, the zords) is where he really shines. The only downside is this green ranger story is starting to drag. We aren’t getting a new villain issue to issue, and the action is starting to wane.

Archie continues to be phenomenal with its eighth issue. If you aren’t a fan of high school stories, maybe this won’t be up your alley, but you might be surprised. We are living in a world where if Mark Millar’s name is on a comic it is probably worth reading. Don’t worry if you haven’t read an Archie book before (I hadn’t) you can still connect with this book and these characters. Millar offers a little Archie history lesson at the end of every issue. I’m not sure if he actually loves the original source material or not, but damn he has me convinced that he does.

New Reads

House of Penance 3

“Don’t judge a book by its cover.” When it comes to comics, I break this rule regularly and I did it again this week when I decided to check out House of Penance.

The book’s description reads:

“The Winchester House—famous for its original owner’s bizarre compulsion to incorporate a multitude of architectural curiosities. But as the bereaved Sarah Winchester’s workers toil on stairways to nothing and doors to nowhere, a mysterious stranger arrives… and he could make Sarah’s demons all too real.”

Basically, after two issues, it’s a whole lot of “WTF?” but in all the right ways. I think? I still don’t really know what’s going on other than it’s really, really, creepy and I’d really, really, like to find out.

I love the style of Bertram’s art, I had reservations about how it would work in a horror story but it’s great. This story isn’t on the same level as the first two arcs of Harrow County or what I’ve read of Outcast so far, but if you’re looking for horror comics this needs to be on your pull list.

Next Time

You guys want DC? I got DC! Future Quest #1
Then Civil War, Spider-Man, and Surfer!

Just because Lionsgate will release a full-length Power Rangers movie next year doesn’t mean there still can’t be a television series either. As the show enters heaven knows what season, production of Saban’s Power Rangers on Nickelodeon will adapt Toei’s Shuriken Sentai Ninninger, part of the long-running Super Sentai franchise in Japan, as 2017’s Power Rangers Ninja Steel. Casting sides posted on RangerCrew reveal the new names for the characters, and they are as generic as you could imagine.

Here they are, the Ninja Steel Rangers: Brad, Glen, Sophie, Harriet, Vince, and Morty. Not confirmed yet are the character’s Ranger colors — Morty sounds like a jokester/side character than perhaps a bearer of the Gold Ranger mantle — but RangerCrew is stating Brad will be the Red Ranger. There is also an Uncle Zane, who seems to be related by blood to Brad and will function as a mentor to the Rangers.

Generally casting sides provide character details, but only Vince has anything distinct written in the sides. It reads, verbatim: “Jock attire. Besides attire, Vince has a HIGH LEVEL of arrogance and conceitedness. Look at the Zap Brannigan and J. Peterson as great examples.”

Futurama fans will recognize the Zap Brannigan reference, but does anyone know who “J. Peterson” is supposed to be? Google is only bringing up is the linguist on Game of Thrones. I’m pretty sure he’s not an arrogant guy, even though he did basically invent Dothraki. Like Morty, he could end up being a joke side character than a Ranger, but he could also be a suitable Blue Ranger as well. (To anyone who saw Ninninger, the only other male Ranger is Yellow and his character was kind of a goof, of the clumsy variety. That’s not an attribute you’d give to a jock.)

Anyway, those are the new Power Rangers! They’re not any more distinct than Jason, Zack, and Kimberly, and there have been weird-ass names in Power Rangers history. At least there won’t be a Tyzonn, or an Udonna, or even a Ziggy for awhile.

This morning I put on a Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers T-shirt. I thought nothing of it. I needed a clean shirt, because it’s appropriate and it was a breezy fifty degrees in the continental Northeast so being shirtless would be an unpleasant experience. As I began my day, wearing that T-shirt bought at a Spencer’s for bored suburban kids, a coworker sent via Slack the Entertainment Weekly article showing the 2017 Power Rangers costumes.

My immediate instinct, which I didn’t do, was to take off my shirt and burn it in the office. My second instinct, which I did do, was shut off my laptop and go for a walk. It was a breezy fifty degrees in the continental Northeast.

I didn’t burn my shirt because a) that is arson and b) I would be (pun not intended) fired. But I became restless, because I am tired of this.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFB8a8Kmzo4/?taken-by=powerrangersmovie&hl=en

I am tired of hearing about the Power Rangers movie. No, I’m not tired of Hollywood’s insistence on summer tentpoles and reboots — the American film industry has always adapted cartoons, comics, plays, and books, Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather was adapted from Mario Puzo’s airport book — but tired of it as circus.

I am not tired of the pandering to my childhood, which was fine but not interesting so why are you trying, but the assumption that it is a thing to appropriate. To see it in ostentatious design and called “edgy,” as if it needed permission by those who never cared to exist. I am a mother seeing my daughter participate in a pageant without my permission. No, I do not “own” Power Rangers so Lionsgate, the producers of the film, do not need my permission. But excuse me. I have bothered to care more than most for twenty years. I do not have a say, legally, but y’know? I should have a say.

Power Rangers is not sacred. It is toys, made to sell merchandise and branded products like cereals and comic books and pajamas. I have no delusions what Haim Saban — who by the way is like the twelfth richest person in the world — had always intended for his teenagers with attitude. He was going to parade them and sell them, always. Power Rangers is not Calvin and Hobbes. (I wish more creators had Bill Watterson’s heart). And yet, I give a shit about it.

I give a shit about the TV show. I give a shit about the toys (not the ones made explicitly for children, I find the “for adults” collectibles quite nice). I give a shit about its continuity and its themes, how it entertains me and let me forget the world can be awful. I like to watch Power Rangers when I’m mad about my work. I like to watch Power Rangers when I’m feeling alone. I like to watch Power Rangers when racist, sexist, orange baboon Donald Trump makes one of his vile remarks that is causing irreparable damage to us as a nation. I like to watch Power Rangers when another mass shooting happens and people unfathomably think thoughts and prayers are enough. I like to watch Power Rangers when I see the world at its worst because I want to believe people can selflessly, and proudly, be at their best.

But I am tired of this. This movie. The emerging details, released my publicists at odd ours timed to dominate the news cycle and every bit showing why none of this is a good idea. And the spectacle, oh heavens the spectacle. Power Rangers is becoming a grotesque parade where the internet’s collective noise of Twitter snark and critics’ hot takes creates the sobering experience to bear witness intelligent people whose careers I model mine after say some of the dumbest fucking things about a thing I know too well, while making me feel shitty that I do. (No tweets or examples I can show here, but let’s just say I dread what my colleagues will say when the trailer comes out.) They say never meet your heroes. Well I actually have, and they don’t make me feel as anxious.

https://www.instagram.com/p/-5ORfsgN92/?taken-by=ericthedragon

I know the internet is a place where everyone has a voice, and it would be horrifically Orwellian if I wanted it silenced. And the best option — log off, walk away — is always an option, as I did today. But I also make my living on the internet, so it’s kind of hard to do my job when all y’all, not just my “heroes” but regular people who never gave an ounce of thought to Eltarian politics or the purpose of the Morphing Grid, or even watched past Power Rangers in Space are making a ruckus. I don’t want you to shut up, but in the name of Zordon, can you do some Wikipedia searching first?

Oh, and if you’re wondering my thoughts on the costumes: They look gross. Why are they glowing blue? Why are their helmets so goofy and look nothing like dinosaurs? Why do the Pink and Yellow Rangers have boob armor and wedges? Why do they look as evil and menacing, and damn near identical, to Rita Repulsa? What is even the point? I want to see them in action because CGI production art does not flatter these suits. Right now, I’d rather they just wear licensed T-shirts.

Growing up i was a huge fan of original series Mighty Morphing Power Rangers, i was enthralled by drama that Tommy brought by being the green Ranger and as The White Ranger. So when I saw the new Rangers suits the nostalgia train pulled in that are looking pretty cool. The new suits definitely has  some of that throwback look from the early 90’s series mixed in with the look of the Iron Man suits. Along with the new Rita Repulsa looks, so everything is shaping up to look like a cool modern reboot but only time will tell when we get a trailer and can judge it a little bit better.

prangers

The reboot will star Elizabeth Banks (Rita Repulsa),  Becky G (Yellow Ranger – Trini), Ludi Lin (Black Ranger – Zack), Dacre Montgomery (Red Ranger – Jason), Naomi Scott (Pink Ranger – Kimberly), and RJ Cyler (Blue Ranger – Billy). I’m still waiting to find out who will be the roles of Zordon and Alpha.

Here’s hoping that it follows in line with the TMNT reboot and keeping to a similar tone that made it so popular and still relevant to today’s audience.

Good Luck Rangers.

‘Power Rangers’ hits theaters March 24, 2017.

Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers is one of the best selling comic books right now. That shouldn’t be a surprise, because it’s really good! According to Diamond Comics Distributors, Power Rangers written by Kyle Higgins and published by BOOM! Studios was the #2 selling comic of March 2016 surpassing DC’s Superman and Marvel’s Star Wars. I live in a world where Power Rangers sells more than Star Wars, and I love it. (Nothing against Star Wars, for the record. That’s a great book too.)

In a recent interview on Comic Book Resources, BOOM! marketing president Filip Sablik hinted something grander at play for the rainbow-colored super squad at BOOM due to the series’ success. “It’s been around 20-plus years, and every couple years it gets completely reinvented,” Sablik said. “What’s amazing about the possibilities is, you could go do a Power Rangers project that’s completely in a different part of their mythology, that’s aimed at different readers. The Power Rangers series we’re doing is very much for people that were kids when the series came out. That’s a very different tone than if we were to do a series that was currently on the air and that’s aimed at kids.”

BOOM! has already planned a limited spin-off series, Power Rangers: Pink from DC writer Brendan Fletcher (Black Canary), which is going to be totally sweet. But what else could they do? Here are six killer ideas for BOOM! if the company is serious about expanding upon its newest goldmine.

1) Rita and Zordon’s 2,ooo Year War

Ten thousand years ago, Rita Repulsa and Zordon locked each other into a stalemate. When Zordon trapped her in a space dumpster, Rita locked Zordon away in a dimensional warp. That’s what that giant tube is all about. But what happened in that original battle?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJaBxHtMS5g

If there’s one thing Power Rangers doesn’t get recognized for is its wholly original take on space fantasy not seen since Edgar Rice Burroughs. There’s an entire galaxy of stories and mythology Power Rangers came loaded with right out of the first episode. What happened between Rita and Zordon? Who was Zordon when he was a wizard? What was his home planet, Eltar, like? How important was Zordon to the Eltarians? Why and how did Rita become who she was? We later saw glimpses of Rita’s family — her brother Rito Revolto and her father, Master Vile — but we really don’t know enough about Rita’s species or origins. There was also some confusing retconning in Season 2, when it was revealed Lord Zedd left Rita in charge. So what was Rita to Zedd before that?

We never saw these questions answered in the original Power Rangers TV show, because there were toys to sell and garbage to clean up at Angel Grove park. But a comic book — not restricted to TV budgets — would be an excellent medium to explore the entirely unexplored fantasy-driven mythology of Rita and Zordon’s origins before five teenagers with attitude came around.

2.) How the Alien Rangers of Aquitar Assembled

In Season 3 of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, the Rangers are turned into children and must journey to find the Zeo Crystals to reverse the spell. For the final ten episodes of Season 3, the Alien Rangers of Aquitar (whose costumes came from 1994’s Ninja Sentai Kakuranger) took over protecting Angel Grove, fending off against Zedd’s monsters like Hydro Hog.

But we never saw their story. Who were these Aquitar guardians like when they first teamed up? How did they team up? Unlike the Power Rangers of Earth, the Alien Rangers seem sanctioned by the Aquitar government. (And what KIND of government does Aquitar have?) Eventually in Power Rangers Zeo, Billy leaves Angel Grove and lives on Aquitar. If Billy is to suffer a similar fate on Higgins’s Power Rangers, it would be nice to know he’s living with characters we comfortably know.

3.) What Became of the Colonial Green Ranger

In the Season 2 two-parter “Return of the Green Ranger,” Rita Repulsa recruits the Wizard of Deception into making a clone of Tommy Oliver who unleashes a clone carrying the Green Ranger powers against the White Ranger, the real Tommy. While the two Tommys battle, the other Rangers are sent back in time to 18th century Angel Grove because… Because. Eventually, the two Tommys go back to 1700s Angel Grove to save the Rangers and colonial Angel Grove from the Wizard’s mutant rat monsters. (It barely makes sense when you watch the episode.) Now fighting for good, the Green Ranger clone stays behind to protect Angel Grove in the colonial era.

This is where I should clarify that many fans speculate Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers takes place in an alternate Earth. There were no colonial settlers out west before the Louisiana Purchase, especially not in what would become Angel Grove, California. So, it’s historically impossible a Green Ranger could protect a colonial California village (aside from the fact that I’m talking about a Green Ranger in THE COLONIAL PERIOD).

But you know, what if? None of “Return of the Green Ranger” hasn’t happened (yet?) in Higgins’s series, which is still covering Tommy’s early days as the real Green Ranger. But time travel is a funny thing. If — and this is a big fat if — there’s already a Green Ranger who protected westward settlers and Native Americans from ancient threats in 1700s Angel Grove? The comic could be more accurate and set as a proper western. What would the history books say about him? I’d love to see a comic book about that in the same vein as Marvel’s Old Man Logan or DC’s Gotham by Gaslight.

4.) How Dax Became Masked Rider, and What Happened to Him

You do know that Alpha 5, the quirky robot assistant to the Power Rangers and Zordon, wasn’t made by Zordon, right? Alpha, that sentient automaton, was built on the distant planet Edenoi, which by Season 3 of Power Rangers was a Mad Max-esque wasteland dominated by the evil Count Dregon. Prince Dax, a.k.a. the Masked Rider, teams up with the Power Rangers in the three-part episode “A Friend in Need” which served as a backdoor pilot for his own spin-off series, Masked Rider.

Masked Rider tanked in the ratings, so don’t bet a full-fledged Masked Rider comic book could do well in sales. But tied well enough to Higgins’s Power Rangers and there’s a universe of potential. We never really saw what became of Dax’s adventures when Masked Rider ended, and he was never  heard from again in the Power Rangers universe. He’s still around somewhere. I wonder what he’s up to.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SX6-DwRXe8Y

5.) The Story of the Phantom Ranger, Zordon’s Son

In Power Rangers Turbo, an obsidian stranger came to help the Rangers whenever they needed him the most. He was the mysterious Phantom Ranger, who got shockingly close with Cassie, the Pink Ranger. He was a soft-spoken hunk in diesel tubes, and his costume was totally badass. I went as him for Halloween once.

But who was he? By Power Rangers In Space the Phantom Ranger had disappeared, and in the climactic finale “Countdown to Destruction” he and the Blue Senturion were fighting the Alliance of Evil on — Eltar? It was never explained. Many fans have long speculated whether or not the Phantom Ranger was Zordon’s son. It’s a good theory with little to support it, but that hasn’t stopped countless fanfiction from dominating the fandom.

A comic book exploring the Phantom Ranger, as the son of Zordon of all people, would be a fascinating one in the whole of the Power Rangers universe. Why didn’t the Phantom Ranger become one of the Power Rangers? Why did Zordon keep him a secret? What was he like before he put on that Darth Vader-esque outfit? As a kid, I used to think he was horribly scarred, hinted by the entire storyline surrounding his stolen ruby that gave him life like Iron Man’s Arc Reactor.

As the son of the mentor to the world’s greatest heroes, a cast-off prince would be an incredible story to explore. And maybe, just maybe, his broken relationship with his father led to his loss at the hands of Rita…

6.) The Real, Original Power Rangers: The Zyurangers?

It’s been widely hinted in Power Rangers lore that Zordon has always used a group of teenagers to battle the forces of evil. Cases of “Ancient Rangers” have appeared in instances like Power Rangers Wild Force and Power Rangers Lost Galaxy. But, if you haven’t already noticed, ancient history has never been fully explored.

Who were Zordon’s “Power Rangers” when his war with Rita ended? As a fan with nothing better to do, I’ve always thought how cool it would be if Zordon’s first Power Rangers resembled the Zyuranger, from Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, the 1992 Super Sentai series that provided the initial basis for Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers.

Geki, Dan, Goushi, Boi, Mei, Burai. Sure, they don’t have to be the actual Zyurangers, but it’d be the ultimate fanservice in a legitimately cool way if the Rangers who actually preceded Jason, Billy, Zack, Trini, Kim, and Tommy were in fact the “Zyuranger.” Like the Alien Rangers, I wonder what they were like. What bugged them? What were their goals? What would they be like raised in a society that’s been at war for two millennia? Geki and Burai’s story — a spoiled prince versus his pauper brother — is ripe with so many possibilities.

As far as I’m concerned, BOOM! is killing it with Power Rangers. But exploring these stories is too good of an opportunity for anyone with the license to pass up.

Welcome to Weekend Reads! It’s your little, weekly dose of comic book goodness that focuses on some aspect of my weekend reading!

Ongoing Reads

Power Rangers is incredible. Issue two came out a couple of weeks ago, and if you aren’t reading it, you are missing out. If our site hasn’t yet made you a fan of the franchise, this book will. Last week’s All New X-Men featured Doctor Strange. Paco Diaz Luque picks up art duties from Bagley (Bagley will be back for #9) and delivers the fanciful mystical art that you’d expect from a title with Strange it. The story itself is a bit weaker than previous offerings; it definitely felt like a filler issue before the title dives into Apocalypse Wars.

New Reads

Now, let’s dive into the only #1 I had a chance to check out.

The_Unbelievable_Gwenpool_1_Young_Variant
The Unbelievable Gwenpool

I was sceptical before reading this issue, for the most part, I had my review already written in my head; read this if you want more Deadpool, otherwise, just read Deadpool. Luckily, I read it anyways because I was pleasantly surprised.

As you’d expect from a Deadpool-esque book, there are plenty of pop culture references. Christopher Hastings never breaks the fourth wall directly; he frames it that Gwen Poole has been taken from her normal world (like ours) into the Marvel Universe, so she references that she is in a comic book but never addresses the audience directly.

The book’s art is what caught my eye initially; the cartoony look provides a nice contrast to the book’s violence. Speaking of violence, the book isn’t as violent as I imagined it would be. In fact, I left this book thinking it was more light hearted and easy going than it was violent. Well, except for the book’s shocking twist ending! You’ll have to read it to find out what it is 😉.

Is this book worth $4.99? Maybe? If you’re tight on cash maybe wait for the trade or just skip it, but if you’re curious about it, you will probably enjoy it.

Oh, before we go, anyone check out Faster Than Light? I checked out the TPB released last week but after two issues it wasn’t working for me. The art is unreal, though! If you like space, this is maybe worth checking out.

Next Time

Plenty to be excited about this week:
Power Man and Iron Fist #3
Captain Marvel #4
Extraordinary X-Men #9

Maybe I’ll give Tokyo Ghost #6 and Dept H #1 a try. I’ve heard good things 🙂

We are less than a year away from the new Power Rangers reboot hitting theaters next year.

We’ve already seen some new things such as an official logo reveal, but now it’s getting interesting. Today, People gave us a first look and interview with Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa. While not looking like her original Power Rangers design, her new update makes her look a bit more threatening. Check out the image below, and read the original People interview right here.  Do you like Rita’s new re-design? What would you do differently? Tell us in the comments below! The Power Rangers reboot will be MORPHING into theaters on March 24th, 2017.

Rita

The logo for 2017’s Power Rangers directed by Dean Israelite is now unveiled, and, well I’m not going to dance around this. It looks like garbage.

Looking like chrome vomit from a late ’90s PlayStation game, the logo for Power Rangers is uncomfortably color-less, sporting a bizarre emphasis on black, red, and some blue. It’s not quite what I wanted from something as beloved to me as Power Rangers, and honestly the current blank logo they have would have been fine.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BEMgDroGztT/?taken-by=powerrangersmovie&hl=en

I guess this is supposed to be dark and gritty? That’s kind of what Dean Israelite and literally anyone else involved with this movie has been describing the production as. Given how well Marvel balances the line between family friendly and profoundly dark, not to mention how much Zack Snyder’s nihilism plagued Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice it’s amazing to me that anyone thinks “dark superheroes targeted to children” is in any way a good idea.

As far as the logo itself, I wish I had evidence but it looks like something I actually made when I was 6 toying with the clip art in Windows 95. I printed it and kept it on my wall. I seriously wish I could show you how this logo is something an actual 6-year old made, because I did!

While we have yet to see a trailer for this, let’s reserve judgement until then. Meanwhile, last week they opened up a Snapchat account. I haven’t seen them post anything, but hopefully a social media intern doesn’t accidentally send out sexts.

Power Rangers will be released on March 24, 2017. It stars (deep breath) Darce Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott, pop star Becky G, and 30 Rock and The Hunger Games star Elizabeth Banks.

Welcome to Weekend Reads! It’s your little, weekly dose of comic book goodness that focuses on some aspect of my weekend reading!

This week I was reminded of why I love comic books… and declare Weekend Read’s first MUST-READ issue!

The reads:

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 001-000
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #1 by Kyle Higgins, Steve Orlando, Hendry Prasetya, and Corin Howell

Spider-Man_Vol_2_2
Spider-Man #2 by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli

Black Widow (2016-) 001-000
Black Widow #1 by Mark Waid and Chris Samnee

As a kid, I loved Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Watching, playing with my toy zords, putting my hair in a ponytail, so I looked like Tommy (the Green Ranger)… I did it all. Once it turned into Power Ranger in Space or whatever it was, I lost interest. I casually revisited Mighty Morphin in my teens but for the most part, it is something that just lives in my childhood. Well, until now.

The BOOM! Studios published Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is everything I could want a Power Rangers comic book to be. It picks up just after the green ranger frees himself from Rita’s possession (one of the show’s greatest storylines, in my opinion at least). Tommy is struggling to fit in with the rest of the Rangers, and they are fighting to 100% trust him. Issue #1 is fun and feels like Power Rangers. Seeing them morphing, summoning their zords, and all those Power Ranger things is just a lot of fun. Is this book anything special if you aren’t a Power Ranger fan? Probably not, but if you grew up with the series you should check this book out. I hope it doesn’t get too wrapped up in character drama and keeps on the fun, bad guy fighting, don’t have to think too much side of things.

In the first edition of Weekend Reads, I discussed my sadness with the state of Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe. It’s amazing what difference one issue can make because I’ve completely changed my tune on Miles Morales. I love where Bendis is taking the Spider-Man series!

The highlight of this issue has to be Bendis’ dialogue. The interactions between Peter and Miles made me, at times, laugh out loud. After two issues, there is plenty I’m looking forward to:
* Miles struggling to find a balance between his life as Miles and his life as Spider-Man.
* Bendis alludes to the coming of super villains (both old and new).
* Miles’ skin colour is coming into the equation as well in an interesting and unique way.

If you are reading Amazing Spider-Man and longing for the Peter Parker of times past, Spider-Man is for you.

Alright, let’s get to the greatest read of the weekend.

Black Widow #1 is unlike any comic I’ve ever read. It is essentially one long, continuous action sequence and it is fricken INSANE! Black Widow has stolen something from SHIELD and SHIELD is doing anything they can to get it back. We have battles in the sky, in vehicles, hand to hand combat, there’s a little bit of everything. This issue unfolds in epic fashion as Black Widow gracefully deals with all the personnel SHIELD throws at her. It feels almost poetic in the way the panels and pages flow into each other. I had no idea Black Widow could be this cool. My gut says that the creative team of Waid and Samnee are going to make Black Widow one of the best books of 2016. I haven’t done this on weekly reads before, but I’m declaring Black Widow #1 a MUST-READ. It’s fresh, fun, and unleashing the potential of a character that I’ve never thought much about.

That’s it for this week. Check out Black Widow #1, get into Spider-Man, and if you’ve ever enjoyed Power Rangers you owe it to yourself to check that out too. I’d love to hear your thoughts on these books!

Briefly: Dean Israelite’s Power Rangers has finally found its villain.

As a 90’s kid who only really remembers the series’ early seasons, I couldn’t be more excited to see iconic villain Rita Repulsa on the big screen in 2017.

THR has learned that Pitch Perfect 2 director and Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp star Elizabeth Banks has signed on to portray the role, and the actress has already taken to Twitter to express excitement over the news:

It’s truly amazing to see so much of the world so excited about a Power Rangers resurgence (well, not that Power Rangers ever went away), and as a huge fan of director Dean Israelite’s 2015 feature debut, Project Almanac, I really can’t wait to see what comes of 2017’s Power Rangers.

RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott, and Dacre Montgomery are our new Rangers, and Power Rangers is slated for a March 24th, 2017 release.

How do you feel about Banks as Rita Repulsa? Be sure to let us know in the comments below!

Adi Shankar is a multiple threat creative: an actor, director, writer and producer whose work includes films like ‘The Grey’, ‘Dredd’, ‘Lone Survivor’ and more. But in Geek circles, he may be best known for his ‘Bootleg’ series of fan films, bold interpretations of beloved characters like James Bond, The Punisher, Venom, Power Rangers and more! This week, we’ve got him on Geekscape to talk about the Bootleg series and how he almost quit Hollywood. We also talk some Royal Rumble and Adi side-steps and counters my questions about ‘The Grey’s ending like a pro! Enjoy!

During Shout! Factory’s Zyuranger marathon (which we’ve been tweeting along all morning!), a new promo aired advertising the next Super Sentai release: Ninja Sentai Kakuranger!

That’s right: the source material for Mighty Morphin‘s third season replacement squad Alien Rangers as well as the giant Zords — the Ninja Megazord and Shogun Megazords — will hit U.S. shores on DVD.

It’s currently unknown what the specific date will be as well as what bonus features, if any, will be included. Zyuranger had the panel that I moderated as a bonus while Dairanger was a bare bones release.

I’m very excited. Kakuranger is the series I was most hoping for when Shout! began to import the Super Sentai series. Former Ninja Warrior contestant Kane Kosugi, who also starred in DOA: Dead or Alive and Isaac Florentine’s Ninja: Shadow of a Tear plays Jiraiya, a.k.a. Ninja Black in Kakuranger. He plays a California-born ninja and speaks a ton of English in the series. I can’t wait!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYWzu1mARsE

Set the date: On January 23rd at 9am PST, Shout! Factory will stream a marathon of Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, the original Super Sentai series from Japan that provided the aesthetic basis of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, on Shout! Factory TV. The marathon will be hosted by Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters author August Ragone, who previously hosted Shout! Factory’s various kaiju movie marathons last year.

I never thought as a die-hard Power Rangers fan that we’d ever see a U.S. domestic release of the Super Sentai series that provided the basis for Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. Yet in 2015, Shout! Factory made our dreams come true with not one, but two complete DVD sets of Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger and Gosei Sentai Dairanger. I’ve been working my way through Dairanger a lot more slowly than I like, but I’m also just enjoying them like fine wine: Slow, steady, and savoring every second. (Even if Dairanger is admittedly not that great.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4H1S4mQhifo

I’m also considering this a present from Shout! Factory to me since the marathon is happening literally the day before my birthday. Thanks Shout! You guys shouldn’t have. But please do, and more often.

If you didn’t know, BOOM! acquired the rights to Saban’s Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers last summer and the first issue, the #0 prelude, will arrive on store shelves this month. Judging by how BOOM! handles its licenses and the great care Kyle Higgins has stated he’s approaching the project, you should be keeping Power Rangers on your radar. I can’t speak for everyone at Geekscape, but Power Rangers is the most-anticipated comic of 2016.

Last fall, writer Kyle Higgins (best known for his work on DC’s Nightwing and his original series C.O.W.L. from Image Comics) went on the interview train and spoke to everyone from Comic Book Resources to GQ about his interpretation of the ’90s teenagers with attitudes. Throughout them all he reiterates a lot of the same points: The story will begin after the events of the “Green With Evil” saga which featured Tommy’s turn as Rita’s evil Green Ranger. The “contemporary” story (it takes place in 2015, instead of 1993) will feature themes of trust and the isolation of being an outsider.

It’s difficult for me to really convey to non-Power Rangers fans why a kitschy show stitched from cheap Japanese sci-fi resonates so much. Many can’t get past the rubber suits and Doctor Who special effects, but deep down there is a rich story to be had about friendship and teamwork through the 20-plus years of stories. To the show’s discredit, they’ve regularly failed at telling that story effectively.

Plagued by tight budgets, exhausting schedules, and the burden to sell toys, it’s in the DNA for Power Rangers to be an sloppy, cobbled-together mess. Sometimes it’s been brilliant (Time ForceDinoThunderRPM), but it’s often been despite itself. Still, the premise at its most bare-bones is forever promising: Five teenagers become superheroes to save the world. To anyone who has read Spider-Man or X-Men or the Harry Potter books, that shouldn’t be strange or a poor story in the slightest.

A comic book, with a wide-open imagination and hardly a budget to consider, is probably the best medium for the show, and I say that with memories of the television show in my head. I love seeing the live-action martial arts and Megazords as much as any Power Ranges fan, but in the interest of a rich and compelling story without the kitschy flavor that has turned off 90% of the first-world audience away from the show, a monthly comic book series is exactly the kind of medium this story needs to stretch.

And it seems Kyle Higgins is aware of that.

In an interview with Comic Book Resources:

[T]o me, the heart and soul of Power Rangers as a concept is a combination of the ordinary made extraordinary, great power and great responsibility, and teamwork. As kids, we all want to feel special — especially when we don’t fit in.

As anyone who’s ever been the new person in a group, on a team, or at a high school can attest, it’s often incredibly hard to fit in. It takes time to get to know people, earn their trust, and for them to earn yours. You often overcompensate, make mistakes, and rub people the wrong way. And while a group might look great on paper, there are going to be bumps along the road as everyone learns to work together — just look at any LeBron James basketball team of the last five years. Take that dynamic, add in the clique-drama of high school, the stakes of trying to save the world, and the fact that Tommy spent weeks trying to kill the Power Rangers — while under mind control — and it’s easy to understand how his addition might take some getting used to.

Here is Higgins speaking to the LA Times:

It’s a big serialized story. And one of the benefits that we have that the original show didn’t was, we have a format that really lends itself to serialized storytelling. I’m working with [artist] Hendry Prasetya, who is just fantastic. He can draw anything. So we’re able to do things visually that the show was never really able to do because of the limitations the show had, like using preexisting footage.

Thematically and emotionally I’m able to explore things in the writing that the show with the format of the show was never really able to do either. So working within this medium has been a lot of fun, specifically, for Power Rangers. I think it lends itself quite well to it.

So while there is a big focus on Tommy, especially in the first arc, everyone kind of has their own story and they all feed into each other’s. I really wanted to make sure I was exploring different storylines for each Ranger.

[Y]ou’re looking at a group of individuals who are a part of a team and each one is defined by not only a different color but different kinds of flourishes in their costumes as well. So visually you have this group of individuals that is also a part of a larger whole, and there was just something about that. Even the X-Men, growing up, didn’t feel as much like a unified team as the Power Rangers.

And with Newsarama:

I would never say never to [origin tales], but I’m telling new stories. I’m not telling stories for the sake of filling in for continuity or for the sake of answering mythology questions like that. To me, that’s a bulls— reason to tell a story. If it has an emotional truth to it and it’s part of what I’m trying to tell, that’s great, I’ll use it. First and foremost, my focus is on these six rangers and their interactions and their lives and the drama that comes out of being both a Power Ranger and a teenager.

And with GQ. Never forget this time GQ took Power Rangers seriously.

“There’s something very pure about it,” he adds. “It’s good versus evil in its purest, best form. Not for one minute did I think there was any sort of stigma for doing a book like this. I love the world, I love the characters, I love the concepts, and if I can do something cool with it, then I want to do it.”

At New York Comic-Con, I asked Higgins what his plans were to address the series’ diversity — because no one will shut up about certain Rangers being certain persons of color — and he had this to say:

When I watched the show growing up, I didn’t think about that at all. I don’t really have a great answer right now, but it’s something that I’m aware of, it’s something that’s definitely on my radar. I can’t really give too much info on what we’re going into at this point, but it’s definitely something on our radar.

So we’ve got compelling teenage drama concerning trust and friendship with the exciting superhero action and giant robots you can expect. What’s not to love?

Power Rangers #0 from BOOM! Studios will hit store shelves January 13.

Briefly: Yeah, this is barely news, but as a huge fan of iZombie, someone that loved Veronica Mars, and an all-around Rob Thomas fanboy, this is very exciting.

EW has just revealed that Veronica Mars herself, Kristen Bell, will sort of be making an appearance on an iZombie episode next month.

The episode will air on January 26th, and is (hilariously) titled ’50 Shades of Grey Matter’. During the episode ‘things get interesting for Liv (Rose McIver) after she consumes the brain of a young librarian who was poisoned, and who also happened to secretly be an erotic fiction writer’

Where does Kristen Bell fit in? Well, she’s certainly no stranger to narration, based on her long roles on Veronica Mars and Gossip Girl, so she’ll fit right into iZombie with a voiceover role on the episode. In any case, it sounds like a hilarious 42 minutes, and a fantastic way to get Veronica Mars fans interested in the show.

And here I was still reeling over the series getting an extra six episodes this season…

Are you as excited as I am? Sound out below!

https://youtu.be/E4I3BWFJwcg

Briefly: Aw yiss.

The CW’s iZombie is far and away my favourite series currently running on television. Really, the series somehow takes two beyond-tired genres (zombie and crime drama) and somehow mashes them into an incredibly quirky, wondrously funny crime dramedy with a heart (and a brain) that only showrunner Rob Thomas and his amazing team could put together.

Somehow, I started the series late, only binge watching it when the first season hit Netflix back in September. Now, I’m watching it day and date with the rest of the word, and the very second that each episode is over I’m beyond hungry for more.

That said, it makes me incredibly happy, (and thankful, because Thanksgiving), that The CW has just added an extra six episodes to iZombie‘s second season run.

This brings season two’s total order up to a hefty 19 episodes, which should definitely keep me satisfied until the inevitable season three.

By the way, does anyone else have a crush on this entire cast? No? Just me? Okay.

Haven’t started the series yet? What the heck are you waiting for?

At this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Red Ranger is getting back to action.

On the 89th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday, November 26, the Red Ranger will be a part of the march up and down Manhattan for the second year in a row. The special will air live on NBC from 9am until 12pm, all time zones.

The Red Ranger joins Ronald McDonald, the Good Dinosaur from The Good Dinosaur (I don’t know his name), the main Angry Bird, two elves from something I don’t know, Santa Claus, and Scrat from Ice Age for some reason. This is a pretty shitty Avengers, if you ask me.

2015 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade poster

As a kid, I had always dreamt that my beloved Power Rangers would be at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I spent my childhood near the Natural History Museum near Central Park on Thanksgiving eve to see the balloons get inflated, from Spider-Man to Cat in the Hat to Rugrats. The Power Rangers have been a staple since 2010, but since last year the Red Ranger had his own balloon.

Last week Collider reported that Saban and Netflix had finalized a deal in which the 20-plus year old children’s superhero franchise would be an exclusive to the popular on demand streaming service. According to our friends at Den of Geek!, it’s false.

“[T]here is no accuracy to the report that Power Rangers is moving exclusively to Netflix in 2017,” said a Saban Brands rep to Den of Geek!

Not confirmed is whether or not Power Rangers will stay at its current home on Nickelodeon.

In the original Collider rumor, the 24th season of Power Rangers would be an adaptation of the currently-airing Shuriken Sentai Ninninger and that the new Power Rangers would be titled Power Rangers Shruiken. My radar should have gone off when I noticed “Shruiken” was totally misspelled, but I chalked that up to people not knowing their Asian weapons of warfare. People pronounce katana “ka-tay-na,” for example.

Not to throw shade at Collider but whoever is giving them scoops seems dubious. Their reports on the 2017 Power Rangers film have been spotty; the site recently revealed the alleged character names in the movie; the Red Ranger was named “Callum Oliver” which fueled rumors regarding the continuity of the movie (“Oliver” is the last name of original Green/White Ranger, Tommy). In a confirmed tweet by the official Power Rangers Twitter, the report turned out to be incorrect.

As of now, Power Rangers is expected to continue broadcasting on Nickelodeon with Power Rangers Dino Supercharge airing 2016. Later this month, the Red Ranger balloon will return to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Variety has reported that a slew of young Hollywood actors will begin testing for 2017’s Power Rangers, set to be directed by Project Almanac helmer Dean Israelite with a script by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz of X-Men: First Class and Thor. Based on the information, I can say that for the most part, they’ve chosen well!

From Variety:

Sources tell Variety the studio is about to begin testing young talent, looking at up-and-coming actors and actresses to make up the team. Sources say Daniel Zovatto (“It Follows”), Ross Butler (“Chasing Life”) and Brian “Sene” Marc are among those testing for Zack (aka the Black Ranger), while KJ Apa (“Shortland Street”), Austin Butler (“The Shannara Chronicles”) and Mitchell Hope (“The Descendants”) are testing for Jason (aka the Red Ranger).

Sources also say Naomi Scott (“The Martian”) and newcomer Stephanie Scott are up for the role of Kimberley (aka the Pink Ranger). Insiders say the studio is looking for fresh faces to fill out the team and will probably look for a big name to play the antagonist for the films, though no offers have been made for that part.

These are quite the batch of promising young stars, but let’s break them down by character and see how well each candidate would portray our beloved teenagers with attitude. As of now, we only know the potential candidates for Jason, Zack, and Kimberly.

Let’s take a look at Zack. For a refresher, here is the rumored character description.

17 years old, always the life of the party. Filled with bravado and swagger, Zack’s tough and cool on the exterior. A charming guy who’s never had trouble with the one-liner, nor lacked confidence around women. A great athlete that’s never wanted to play on any team but his own. Zack advertises everything about himself, except the truth, which is that he lives in a trailer park with his single mom, and because of it, feels deeply inferior to all his peers.

Proposed actors: Daniel Zovatto, Ross Butler, Brian Marc.

WOW. They’re really uncomfortable casting a black actor for Zack, and in some ways that’s a bummer. Power Rangers never intentionally casted by skin, but the producers they must feel as though they just can’t get away with letting Zack the Black Ranger be black. While people object to that, the Black Ranger has become an icon for black millennials, and to see that changed would turn ticket-buyers away from the movie. From what I gather, Brian Marc — who doesn’t have much of a body of work to judge him by — is of mixed race.

Ross Butler, however, is Asian. His acting credits are a bit longer than Brian Marc’s, mainly in some Disney stuff and TNT series. He’d be an interesting choice: Besides being Asian and bucking Asian stereotypes (again, read his rumored description), he has a cool air about himself — necessary for Zack –that I’d be excited to see.

Of course, Daniel Zovatto is the highest profile actor, having been on the horror hit It Follows and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. While I hope Zack stays an actor of color, Zovatto would be equally exciting as the Black Ranger.

My personal hope is that Ross Butler gets it. Just because it would be a really significant step for Asian men and POC superheroes. Zovatto wouldn’t be bad either but I don’t think he needs Power Rangers, and sadly Brian just doesn’t have enough for me to judge from.

Now, Kimberly.

17 years old, unconventionally cool all in a way the popular girls wish they were. In fact, she was one of those girls, but isn’t anymore. Not since she’s returned to school after an absence of 6 months. Rumors are flying as to why; rumors she seems not to care about, because she’s come back with this new rebel-without-a-cause, edgy attitude. But the truth is, it’s all masking a deep secret that makes her feel profoundly vulnerable.

Proposed actresses: Naomi Scott, Stephanie Scott.

Both actresses are exactly what they’re looking for: young, pretty, and up-and-coming. Both have respectable resumes (Naomi Scott was just in The Martian, although I honestly don’t remember her character). She was, however, a star in Terra Nova, which I did not see enough of to judge her from. It’s also worth mentioning she’s British-Indian, which is a rad departure from the brunette Valley Girl that Kimberly originally was.

Stefanie Scott, just 18 years-old and having starred in Insidious 3 and the upcoming Jem and the Holograms, IS your typical blonde-looking teen, and is a pop star as well. I always imagined a pop star actress would be Kimberly.

In the end, what matters for Kimberly is that she needs to be smarter and more clever than she appears to be. She has to be beautiful, yes, but she’s also not a dumb Barbie. She’s whip-smart and clever, and deceptively so. That’s what’s needed for Kimberly. Either Naomi or Stefanie would be good, but I think Naomi would be more interesting.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVlyEVDhDN0

Now, Jason.

17 years old, the makings of someone or something great if he would just get out of his own way. Jason was a legend of this town — a freshman quarterback with the skills to take him all the way. People knew his name. Children wore his jersey. Until, one night Jason wrapped his car around a pole and busted out his knee. Everything Jason was going to become ended in an instant. And with it, he lost himself. When we meet him at the start of the film, he’s a kid in need of redemption. By the end, he’ll be leading this disparate group of teens to shed their individual baggage and find who they truly are.

Proposed actors: KJ Apa, Austin Butler, Mitchell Hope.

I think I’ve mentioned how much I hate they’re departing Jason from his martial arts roots, but what kid could relate to karate when their dads want them playing football?

Disappointingly, all actors are white dudes, and none of them remotely resemble what Jason should be. I don’t get a square-jawed hero vibe from any of them, and even with his emo-laced description I just don’t see any of these guys fitting that role. Mitchell Hope is the closest one, but I’m still not sold.

Is Jon Foo too old? They can just CGI the shit out of him into looking like a teenager, right?

Neither Trini nor Billy‘s proposed performers were mentioned by Variety (maybe I should audition!), but they’re bound to be filled soon.

Power Rangers is set for release on January 13, 2017.

Boom! Studios’ anticipated Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series will debut this January with issue #0, and Batman Eternal and Nightwing writer Kyle Higgins penning the script.

When Boom! announced they were writing Power Rangers I anxiously scoured for any information regarding these exact details. I wanted to know who would be taking care of my beloved Rangers (because Boom! sure as hell wouldn’t ask me) and I wanted to know when exactly I should be spending my money. San Diego Comic-Con came and went — where I lucked out and bought all six blind bagged exclusive one-shots written by the wonderful Mairghread Scott — and I gave up trying to learn more. It’s a good thing I gave up, then! That’s a great lesson for life.

Issue #0 will include Scott’s Comic-Con short with art by Daniel Bayliss. It’s unknown who will draw the main series, but I do hope it’s Bayliss. I liked his coloring and representation of the Power Rangers.

Until January, gawk at the amazing covers by Goñi Montes, and Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive look at his White Ranger cover.

Briefly: iZombie is (finally) almost back on The CW, and the network has (finally) debuted the first show but sweet trailer for the upcoming episodes.

The footage looks just as light-hearted and fun as everything we saw in season one, and I cannot wait to see what’s in store for Liv and company next.

In the series, “A med student-turned-zombie takes a job in the coroner’s office to gain access to the brains she must reluctantly eat to maintain her humanity, but with each brain she consumes, she inherits the corpse’s memories. With the help of her medical examiner boss and a police detective, she solves homicide cases in order to quiet the disturbing voices in her head.”

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think. iZombie returns on October 6th!
