Marvel is back with a new live-action Disney+ series: ‘Echo’! Spinning out of the events from ‘Hawkeye’, Echo sees Maya Lopez deal with the consequences of shooting Wilson Fisk. What happens when The Kingpin Wilson returns? Also returning is Ian Kerner as we talk about the 5 episode miniseries! What about Marvel cameos like Daredevil? What are the differences in the treatment of Echo in the comic books vs on screen? And when we might see Maya and these characters again? It’s all on a new Geekscape!

It’s an MCU double feature as Garrett talks about both “Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness” & “Moon Knight”! He dives into what Sam Raimi brought to Doctor Strange, the differing arcs of Stephen & Wanda, reinterpreting Moon Knight for the small screen, & why the sandy supernatural vibe added to the series. This past weekend, as the D23 Expo dropped bomb after entertainment bomb on the world, one of the lesser-known but extremely interesting characters that surfaced was a new series set for release on Disney+ called Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. The show was announced Saturday amid a ton of other news, and this one drew my attention because I had just met one of the co-creators of the character and comic book, Brandon Montclare, at Keystone Comic Con in Philadelphia. Montclare, along with Amy Reeder and Natacha Bustos, created the character.

The show Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur will follow the adventures of 13-year-old Lunella Lafayette and her best friend/time traveling partner/pet, Devil Dinosaur. This show is adapted from the Marvel Comic Series and is produced in conjunction with Laurence Fishburne’s Cinema Gypsy Productions.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #1, via Marvel.com

Lunella is the self-proclaimed smartest person in the world in the comics, and one of her inventions creates a time warp that allows Devil Dinosaur, a vintage 1970s Marvel character created by Jack Kirby, to appear in present day and help her fight bad guys.

Animated image of Lunella and Devil Dinosaur, courtesy of Marvel Animation.

I sat down to ask Montclare some questions about his comic and the upcoming show.

DF: Give readers who may not know of the comic your description of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.

BM: Moon Girl is Lunella Lafayette, a nine year old inventor and she is always trying to make new gadgets to save the world, or to at least make herself happy. One of these gizmos malfunctions and teleports Devil Dinosaur from the past into the present day, and Devil Dinosaur is just a big red Tyrannosaurus Rex who was created by Jack Kirby… they become reluctant partners. They need each other, as all buddy cop stories go.

DF: How did the character of Moon Girl come to be?

BM: Moon Girl was originally Rocket Girl, and Marvel really liked what we’d done with the image, and said “Maybe you guys can do something for us”…we had a meeting…and very early on they mentioned Devil Dinosaur was something that might be cool that nobody was working with. It was a property they were trying to revive and they were also looking for something geared towards younger readers…there was a supporting character in the old Devil Dinosaur that was Moon Boy, which was just a cave man back in the dinosaur world…so we came up with a brand new character, we made her a girl, and instead of being set in the dinosaur world we would bring it up to speed, so it kind of developed that way. There’s a huge tradition of scientific Marvel characters…Peter Parker, a kid who was able to make his own web shooters, plus Tony Stark, Mister Fantastic and Ant Man…so we made this superhero in the same mold as all of the other guys and gals, and gave a little twist on it.

DF: How do you feel about the announcement at the D23 Expo that your comic was picked up for a show on Disney+?

BM: Super excited. I really wanted to make Moon Girl feel like a Marvel book. For me it’s about the chance to make a character that’s going to be a part of that universe. So I want her interacting with other characters, whether it’s [working with] Iron Man, fighting Doctor Doom, or whatever. Marvel has gone on so much beyond the comics, the movies, the shows and everything else…so I’m super excited about it. And I really do like seeing other people’s take on it. It’s pretty cool.

DF: How did Moon Girl end up working with some members of the Fantastic Four?

BM: I really liked working on that arc. It was called Fantastic 3 because what happened was at the time, in the regular Fantastic 4 book Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman were presumed dead and lost in the multiverse someplace. In our story Moon Girl found a way to send Devil Dinosaur back to his own time to correct accidentally transporting him. So she lost her partner, and The Thing and the Human Torch were left without their partners, so they thought it was a good idea to combine forces and do what the Fantastic 4 couldn’t do anymore…but [working together] was a bit of a disaster. It all works out okay and Devil Dinosaur ends up coming back as a fourth member of the Fantastic 4, they had to fight the Silver Surfer, Galactus and a couple of new characters…but now the original members are back and she was an ancillary member.

Moon Girl fights with The Thing and The Human Torch as part of The Fantastic 3

DF: Could you see Moon Girl in the MCU at some point?

BM: Sure! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying she will be. I would just love to see it. Maybe in Phase 9.

The comic Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is on a current run, and the show is slated for Disney+ sometime in 2020.

Marvel’s popular Daredevil has returned to Netflix for a 3rd Season… but does this one hit a bullseye!?! Bad pun. I know. But things are a bit rockier for the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen in the wake of Netflix’s cancellation of both Iron Fist and Luke Cage. What does that mean for future Marvel Netflix shows? Or the upcoming Disney streaming app? And as we get into this SPOILER FILLED episode, what were the highlights of the season? What do we still have questions about? Where do we go moving forward? Really, we just want to keep talking about how awesome Bullseye’s origin was and can’t wait to see more of him! But obviously, we do that in a ton of detail! It’s all here so enjoy!

Longtime Geekscape friend Yuri Lowenthal has been keeping a secret… that he’s Spider-Man! But now, the entire world knows because Spider-Man on PS4, in which Yuri plays Peter Parker and Spider-Man, is one of the hottest, system selling games of the year! In this episode, Yuri talks about the long process of auditioning for the roll, having to keep such a giant secret and performing as one of the most iconic characters of all time! What was the process of performing some of the action packed mocap sequences? Did he get to adlib any of the lines? What were some of his favorite parts of the whole experience and would he be up for a sequel? Also, we talk about Yuri’s live, user interactive sci-fi series for Project Alpha, ‘Orbital Redux’, and what an insane and brilliant idea it is for a web series! There’s a lot here to process, Geekscapists, so enjoy!

Finally! Hollywood had its way and successfully released the stand-alone ‘Venom’ movie that they’ve been trying to make for years! But… is it really a success? What can be argued against an $80 Million opening weekend? Well… a lot. This movie isn’t exactly a critical darling. From the script to the fx to the acting to the entire point of making a stand-alone Venom movie in the first place, there’s a lot that doesn’t work. So why did we still have fun watching it? Did it have anything to do with the movie? Well, it’s time to answer your questions. Does any of it work? How is there a Venom separate from the Spider-Man story? Are the action scenes exciting? Did they nail the Venom and Eddie Brock relationship? How does the villain stack up? Does anything in this movie make sense? It’s all here in this episode… so better you listen to this than watch the movie.

Jason Inman (and his wife Ashley Victoria Robinson) have been personal friends of both myself and Geekscape for a long time! And they’re also burgeoning comic book creators with last year’s successful ‘Jupiter Jet’ hitting stands! They’re back now with their really cool second comic ‘Science!’, about a school for young genius that may be home to more than just a good education! Jason and Ashley join me to talk about the graphic novel, the Kickstarter campaign going on RIGHT NOW for the book and much, much more! And once Ashley bows out of the episode, Jason and I keep the party going by talking about Grant Morrison’s upcoming ‘Green Lantern’ run, if the Marvel Universe needs a complete reboot and we even create our own Avengers team in the process… which pretty much just consists of D-Man! What’s the next step in Danny Rand and Colleen Wing’s relationship? Does this set anything up for ‘Daredevil: Season 3’? How does Misty Knight and Luke Cage relate to the events in ‘Iron Fist’? Well, it took 10 years and 3 phases in the making, but Avengers Infinity War is now closer than ever.

It seems as though we’ve known about this movie since the start of the MCU, just patiently biding time until we get up to this point. While other companies try and rush out cinematic universes for quick cash, they’ve all paled in comparison to the time, care, and planning that goes into the MCU. The first official trailer for the film dropped just this morning and fans are already going nuts. The video already has over 10 million views and been trending like crazy. No trailer play by play this time, just sit back and enjoy the trailer. Avengers Infinity War will release on May 4th, 2018.

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ has arrived and it is glorious! Crammed to the gills with action, humor, massive set pieces and wonderful character moments, Thor’s 3rd solo film is widely regarded as his best yet. Do we agree? I sit down with Ian Kerner for another Geekscape special to discuss the cameos, Thor VS Hulk, Hela’s status as one of the best villains in the MCU, the adaptation of ‘Planet Hulk’, how ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ fits into the wider MCU, what it means for ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and so much more! You know Ian is going to bring the knowledge and there is a LOT to talk about this film so listen up and enjoy!

Quantum Mechanix is known for their intricate figures and detailed prop replicas. Their booth at San Diego Comic-Con was a glorious gallery of new and upcoming products. They also had a store in the back, where attendees could get their hands on merchandise (some of which, for the very first time).

This year’s con marked the debut of their Wonder Woman Q-Fig Max. The figure is super-detailed with a bunch of different pieces (don’t worry –  it comes pre-assembled). I loved that both Wonder Woman and her mount share the same determination in their eyes.

Q-Fig’s tendency to have a whimsical side. The Batman and Superman Friendship Q-Fig is a perfect example of that. The contrast in expressions between the two heroes is hilarious and I could not help but smile when I saw it.

There were also prototype Q-Fig’s from the world of Harry Potter on display. The Harry and Hagrid: Race for Hogwarts Q-Fig Max will be the most complex in the series to date.

The Harry Potter on the Broom Q-Fig was also impressive. Harry’s entire body as well as his broom balance on that translucent blue swirl of “wind.”

Here was a figure I never thought I would see: a Good Feathers Q-Fig. This was also a prototype.

Quantum Mechanix is also known from their plush Q-Pals line. The majority of the ones on display were prototypes, with the exception of Supernatural‘s Sam Winchester, Castiel, and Dean Winchester.

And I absolutely adore this plush Niffler from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Funny story about this little guy: Quantum Mechanix hadn’t planned on selling it at SDCC but they received a small shipment early. Initially, they were just going to have a prototype on display. Needless to say, this adorable beast sold out before Day Three (which is when I got there). The good news is fans like myself can sign up on their site to be notified when the plush comes in-stock.

There was plenty of Firefly merchandise to be found. I could not get over how much thought and detail was in every figure. Everyone’s clothes are made of real fabric. That trait is standard for the 1:6 articulated figures but it was especially impressive in this set because of the intricacy of their outfits.

While the majority of the 1:6 scale articulated figures were based to Firefly or Star Trek but there were a few outliers. One that excited me in particular was Westley from The Princess Bride. He comes with both his masked face when he is the Dread Pirates Roberts as well as his traditional Westley face (“As you wish!”).

Star Trek saw plenty of representation at Quantum Mechanix’s booth, from prop weapons and badges to Tribble plushes to the already-mentioned 1:6 articulated figures. What I was most impressed from this series was the Captain’s Chair. It was to scale with the articulated figures and – here is the coolest part –  the buttons work! They make sounds and light-up when pressed.

The booth was also home to a 1:72 scale miniature of Star Lord’s ship, the Milano, from Guardians of the Galaxy. Once again, detail was king. For example, you could look inside the cockpit and see the seats and the control panel.

I had a blast looking at all the goods that we can expect in the future from Quantum Mechanix. You can check out more of the products on their site.

Briefly: This is incredible.

I’ve been largely avoiding trailers, clips, and spoilers for the upcoming release of Spider-Man homecoming, but for some reason the opportunity to catch the first few minutes of footage from the film was simply something that I couldn’t resist.

Cinemablend points out that this isn’t actually the first four minutes, and that there’s another scene preceding this footage, but in any case, it’s a freaking wonderful few moments of footage that skyrockets my excitement for the feature.

Naturally, if you don’t want anything spoiled you should probably avoid watching (and reading below this sentence).

The clip plays off as a video diary of Peter’s journey to meet The Avenger’s (culminating with him stealing Cap’s shield), getting a new suit, annoying the hell out of Happy, and… having to sit around awkwardly while Stark talks about his hopes that Aunt May is wearing something skimpy.

A new trailer is attached to the end of the footage, though it’s composed mostly of footage that has already been released in some form or another.

In any case, we’re just a few days away from what sounds (based on early reactions) like an actually freaking good Spider-Man film, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Take a look at the footage below, and be sure to let us know what you think! Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theatres this Friday!

Yes. Please. I’m not as familiar with the Marvel Universe as I could be, but I was instantly taken with Chadwick Boseman’s portrayal of the Black Panther; you could feel how close he was with his father, how much he cared about his country, his intense hatred for the Winter Soldier. This movie has a stunning cast (Lupita Nyong’o and Forest Whitaker to name a few!), and I can’t wait to see more about this movie tonight when the trailer drops (if you’re into sportsball, the trailer debuts at 6 PM PT during the NBA finals game).
