Netflix’s ‘Punisher’ series finally arrived and it took no prisoners! I know that we’re a little late on this one but it doesn’t matter… because we don’t take prisoners either! Ian Kerner joins in to talk about Jon Bernthal’s take on the Punisher and how it stacks up against the competition. Nowhere is safe to hide as we ask all the questions! What does this mean for Daredevil, Luke Cage and the rest of the Netflix Marvel universe? Is this Microchip a better version than the comics? What about Ben Barnes and the rest of the cast? New characters, old characters… which pieces were adapted properly? And of course, what can you maybe expect in Punisher Season Two? There is a LOT to like in this series so listen in as we sift through the bodies and look for survivors!

👎 – Skip, read at your own risk
👌 – Okay, not great, not bad, you might find something to like here
đŸ’Ș – Great, highly recommended

DC

👌 Aquaman #2
👌 Batman #2
đŸ’Ș Green Arrow #2
👌 Green Lanterns #2
👌 Justice League Rebirth #1

I can’t get enough of DC’s Rebirth. Eventually, I’ll cut back (in fact, I almost skipped Green Lanterns) but I’ll wait until things get a little tougher to keep up with. Green Arrow has been blowing me away and is my favourite of the current Rebirth titles. Percy is telling a Green Arrow tale that is starting to feel a lot like a Frank Miller’s Born Again story arc for Daredevil. For those of you unfamiliar with the reference, it means good things, very good things.

Justice League Rebirth wasn’t as exciting as I was hoping it would be since it basically just served as an introduction to the team, but Hitch’s art provided enough action, spanning cities and giant monsters to make the issue enjoyable.

I don’t have much to say about the other titles. Batman is pretty solid so far, after two issues most of the chess pieces are in place and it looks like things are going to start getting really interesting for Batman, our new super-powered heroes, and the villain who is revealed by the issues conclusion. Green Lanterns and Aquaman are both decent enough reads, just not characters that I feel a strong connection to yet.

Marvel

👌 Amazing Spider-Man #15
👌 The Punisher #3

Last week’s Amazing Spider-Man was interesting. It looks like Peter, MJ, and Regent may remember the events of Secret Wars. This came out of left field, so I’m not sure what the implications of it could be but I’m excited to find out. The issue concludes with a shocking twist, leaving one of our characters lifeless (probably not, but maybe) on the ground. I’d recommend picking up issues #13, #14 and #15 and start familiarizing yourself with this series. I have a feeling Amazing Spider-Man is going to find itself in must-read territory very soon.

Sure, this Punisher run isn’t reinventing the wheel, but it has been a lot of fun so far. It has everything you’d expect from a Punisher book; the Punisher, bad guys who are after The Punisher, good guys who don’t know whether they’re after bad guys or the Punisher, and a whole lot of violence!

Image

đŸ’Ș The Fix #4
đŸ’Ș Paper Girls #7

I’ve previously mentioned The Fix isn’t as strong or funny of a title when the two characters aren’t together. The trend continues here as we see what Mac is up to. However, I found myself enjoying this issue as much as the first two. I can’t recommend this title enough, we’re only four issues in so go pick ’em up and get in on the fun!

I’m loving Vaughan’s Paper Girls. It is just so unlike anything I’ve ever read before. The art is a lot of fun and Vaughan’s plays with time travel (a concept that many would say has been done to death) in plenty of fun and inventive ways. This isn’t a series you can just start reading though, if you are interested I strongly suggest you begin with #1.

Book of the Week!

Green Arrow 2 Cover

Not only is the Green Arrow my favourite of the current Rebirth titles, it’s also my favourite book of the week!

Welcome to Weekly Reads! It’s your little dose of comic book goodness that focuses on some aspect of my comic book reading!

A ton of ongoing reads, plus a couple of new ones. Let’s get into it!

Ongoing Reads

It feels like just last week we were talking about Amazing Spider-Man, oh wait, we were! This week #12 was released and Mary Jane is back and she’s working for Tony Stark. Iron Man and Spider-Man team up to battle Ghost. It was actually a lot of fun but the Spider-Man issue to read this week was hidden away in the Free Comic Book Day issue of Captain America! Google it, I won’t spoil it for you.

Are you reading Black Widow yet? You should be. Issue #3 came out this week and it continues to be one of my favourite ongoing comics. Waid and Samnee embrace and take advantage of the art form in a way few other creative teams can. Every issue of this book brings something new to the table and it’s always executed in masterful fashion.

I shouldn’t talk about X-Men. One week I love it, the next it bores me. Uncanny X-Men #7 is another meh offering in the Apocalypse Wars story arch. Like I said last week, this is a story you’ll want to wait for in trade.

New Reads

The Punisher (2016-) 001-000

The Punisher #1 (Volume 10 in case you were wondering). This issue feels like an extension of Marvel’s Daredevil. Punisher’s appearance is similar as is the situation he finds himself in. Not much to say about this book. The story is a typical, drug-dealing bad guys, even badder leaders, and the DEA… and lots and lots of violence. It’s nice to see Steve Dillon drawing the character again 😊

Renato Jones - The One Percent 001-000-047

I tried but I couldn’t get into Renato Jones – The One Percent #1. I thought this book was going to be a fun read but its bleak outlook on the world makes it hard to enjoy. If you like to hate on rich people there might be something for you here. I feel like I missed something because this is the kind of book I’d normally like but nothing about it sucked me in. It was just too ugly of a universe. Perhaps I’ll revisit it in trade if people say good things about the next few issues.

Next Time

‱ Black Panther #2 – I thought this came out last week but I was wrong
‱ All New X-Men #9 – After not enjoying X-Men this week, I should like it again next week
‱ THE FIX #2! 😁

Kingdom Come 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition comes out this week. If you haven’t read it, now’s your chance!

Briefly: We’ve seen glimpses of Punisher and Elektra in earlier trailers (which yes, we are still watching on repeat), but today’s teaser, entitled ‘Suiting Up’ gives us our best look at Punisher and Elektra’s costumes yet!

Just when Matt thinks he is bringing order back to the city, new forces are rising in Hell’s Kitchen. Now the Man Without Fear must take on a new adversary in Frank Castle and face an old flame – Elektra Natchios.

Bigger problems emerge when Frank Castle, a man looking for vengeance, is reborn as The Punisher, a man who takes justice into his own hands in Matt’s neighborhood. Meanwhile, Matt must balance his duty to his community as a lawyer and his dangerous life as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, facing a life-altering choice that forces him to truly understand what it means to be a hero.

Take a look at the teaser below, and let us know how many episodes you plan to watch on March 18th!

Briefly: Wow. Wow. Wow.

10 days ago we saw an amazing first trailer for Daredevil‘s upcoming second season. The last few seconds of that video noted that today, February 25th, we’d be teased yet again with another trailer for the beyond anticipated episodes.

The new trailer has just debuted online, and it re-introduces us to a few familiar faces (and the Yazuka), and also digs into Matt and Elektra’s troubled past.

It’s essentially made up of entirely new footage, and as hard as I thought it would be to top the trailer that we saw earlier this month, I think that this one has done it.

Take a look at the (kinda spoilery) trailer below, and be sure to let us know how many episodes of Daredevil you plan to watch on March 18th!

This season, Just when Matt thinks he is bringing order back to the city, new forces are rising in Hell’s Kitchen. Now the Man Without Fear must take on a new adversary in Frank Castle and face an old flame – Elektra Natchios.

Briefly: Damn.

Back in January an exciting, believable rumour churned across the internet that had Marvel, Daredevil, and The Punisher fans absolutely ecstatic. Word at the time was that a standalone Netflix The Punisher series was seemingly moments away from being greenlit.

It looks as though this was, sadly, nothing more than a rumour (damn you), as a just published excerpt with Marvel’s head of television Jeph Loeb, notes that “I think that’s something that people are speculating on, as opposed to something that’s actually happening. It’s certainly our hope that any of our characters will be embraced and that people want to see more of them.”

Now, we can certainly hope that Loeb is simply trying to downplay this whole thing, and that an official The Punisher announcement will arrive just days after Daredevil‘s second season blows all of our minds on March 18th… But for now, hope is all that we can do.

Loeb also spoke on the quick renewal of Jessica Jones, stating that “When they announced that Jessica Jones was getting a second season, every single report said, ‘It should come as a surprise to no one that Jessica Jones has received a second season order’. I’m the guy going, ‘Well, it was a surprise to me! It isn’t a given in television. The fact that we get to continue telling stories with these characters speaks a lot about the quality of the storytelling and the acting and the writing. We are telling the best stories that we can at Netflix, and they seem to be responding to it.”

Daredevil‘s second season hits Netflix in its entirety on March 18th, and we can’t freaking wait. Just how badly do you want to see a standalone The Punisher series? Be sure to sound out below!

Briefly: Following the in-motion looks at Foggy Nelson and Karen Page, Netflix has just debuted new motion artwork depicting a menacing Frank Castle (holding Daredevil’s mask to boot).

Take a look at the new teaser below, keep watching that recently-released full trailer on repeat, and be sure to let us know if you’re as excited as we are! Daredevil‘s second season hits Netflix on March 18th!

Briefly: This is exciting.

Of course, Marvel and Netflix refused to comment, so nothing is official at this point, but (understandably), the companies are apparently looking into a dedicated series based on The Punisher.

The character is set to debut in the universe with the March release of Daredevil’s second season, and will be portrayed by The Walking Dead alum Jon Bernthal.

According to TVLine, early buzz on Bernthal’s performance has been exceptional, and as fans have been waiting years (decades) for a truly great portrayal of The Punisher, Marvel/Netflix would be crazy not to capitalize on it.

Which story arc would you like to see told in a standalone series? What do you think of Bernthal as The Punisher? Sound out below!

Briefly: Well this came out of nowhere.

Marvel has just announced that The Walking Dead and Fury actor Jon Bernthal has been cast as Frank Castle, and that he’ll first appear in next year’s second season of Daredevil.

Marvel states that “He is a vigilante who aims to clean up New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen by any means necessary, no matter how lethal the results.” The first season of Daredevil marked some of the most graphic TV that I can recall watching, and I can’t wait to see just how far they can turn things up with Punisher.

Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television stated that “Jon Bernthal brings an unmatched intensity to every role he takes on, with a potent blend of power, motivation and vulnerability that will connect with audiences. Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same.”

I knew that Punisher rights reverted back to Marvel recently, but I certainly didn’t expect them to jump on the character like this. What do you think of Bernthal for role? Is there anyone else you’d rather have seen as Frank Castle?

Daredevil‘s second season hits Netflix in 2016.

Bernthal

Briefly: This is damn cool.

While we may never see the most powerful heroes and villains from Marvel and DC face off against each other on film, television or in the comics, it has happened 4 times already in Super Power Beat Down. DC currently has the upper hand having won 3 of 4 against its Marvel counterparts. Superman got the best of Thor while Nightwing took down Gambit and Batman overpowered Deadpool. Marvel’s only win was a clash of titans as Wolverine became the first competitor to win twice in bringing Batman to his knees – marking the only time a DC character has lost. Marvel, meanwhile is just 3-3 in the series.

Today, in the 12th episode of this popular series, Marvel has another chance as the two biggest gun-toting vigilantes in their respective universes will go head-to-head in a deadly brawl – Red Hood vs. Punisher.

Who do you think will win? Take a look at the video below and find out!

So, remember when Marvel released that teaser for Daniel Way and Steve Dillon’s Marvel NOW! title a week ago? And I jokingly said “Hey, what if it’s a Thunderbolts book with The Punisher and Deadpool on the team?” Well, I guess it turns out that it IS a Thunderbolts book starring The Punisher, Deadpool, Red Hulk, Venom and Elektra. After seeing this line-up you’re sold, I’m sold and we’re all adding this to our pull lists. Check out Steve Dillon’s cover for issue number one of Thunderbolts! Just shut up and take my money Marvel!

Editor Jordan White speaking to Newsarama about the title:

The idea for this team of Thunderbolts actually came from a Marvel retreat, where ideas are flying fast and furiously. The question of how to shake-up Thunderbolts and take it in a new direction came up, and the idea of a Red Hulk-led team got the room excited. From there, the question became who he would tap for his team, and everyone agreed the main roster you see here (Punisher, Venom, Elektra, and Deadpool) would be an awesome team book. Looking for the right fit for this book as far as writers go, Dan Way was at the top of the list — and once we brought the idea to him, he leapt in with both feet, with tons of ideas of his own to add to the mix. He quickly shaped what was a rough idea for a team into a book with a specific idea and direction behind it… and added in a few more characters to the team, who shall be revealed over the first few issues.

Unlike the most recent Thunderbolts, this group is not working for any government program — this is Red Hulk’s team, to do with as he sees fit. In case you forgot, big red’s secret ID is that of General “Thunderbolt” Ross, a well-respected military official who the world thinks was KIA. Well, just because he can’t be part of the American Armed Forces doesn’t mean he can’t put together an armed force of his own (in fact, as a side note, I’d considered suggesting we call the book “Thunderbolt’s” with a possessive, but decided I would be laughed out of editorial if I mentioned it). And again, if you look at the crew ol’ T-Bolt has put together, you can get a sense of the kind of things he might be looking to do with them. They’re a team of loners, but all highly trained and highly skilled as either mercenaries or soldiers. This is a black ops dream team… or perhaps red ops, as the case may be. They’re all characters with their own very particular morality, who do the things they do because they believe in them. They believe they are doing right, even if the world around them might not. Now that they’re working together, they can set their sights even higher… and the world had better look out, because they won’t take no for an answer.”

Two new teams have been released teasing some new upcoming Marvel NOW! titles. These ones are definitely harder than the last batch and quite a bit more open to speculation.

This first teaser announces the team of Daniel Way (Deadpool) and Steve Dillon (Punisher MAX) and from the word “lightning” one could assume it may be a new Thunderbolts title. With the crosshairs over the name and these two attached could we see a Thunderbolts book that featured The Punisher and Deadpool?

This one is a little harder to figure out. The team of Dennis Hopeless (X-Men: Season One) and Kev Walker (Thunderbolts) could possibly be working on an ongoing Marvel Zombies series? Or maybe that’s too obvious.

Looks like friend of Geekscape, Thomas Jane wants another shot at playing The Punisher. He and his friends went so far as to make a short film to prove why that might actually be a good idea.

Jane has this to say on the YouTube page:

“I wanted to make a fan film for a character I’ve always loved and believed in – a love letter to Frank Castle & his fans. It was an incredible experience with everyone on the project throwing in their time just for the fun of it. It’s been a blast to be a part of from start to finish — we hope the friends of Frank enjoy watching it as much as we did making it.”

I got chills watching this.

In October we will return to a world ravaged by a plague that had turned most of Earth’s heroes into raving cannibalistic monsters. Jonathan Maberry is back to continue on from events that unfolded in ‘Marvel Universe vs Punisher’ and ‘Marvel Universe vs Wolverine’ in a four issue mini-series ‘Marvel Universe vs The Avengers

“The story is intensely personal, as all stories of great cultural trauma,” Maberry says. “These are horror stories, and ‘Marvel Universe vs The Avengers’ takes the horror down to a very personal level. We are no longer witnessing the world’s hurt or the cultural hurt, we’re inside the head – and heart — of a man who is experiencing the most personal kind of hurt.” The man he is referring to here is Clint Barton aka Hawkeye.

“The story is told from Hawkeye’s perspective, but most of the big guns are there: Thor, Hulk — red and green versions — Iron Man, Giant Man, Luke Cage, Black Widow, Mockingbird, Spider-Man, and others,” reveals the writer. “We also check in on the kids at Avengers Academy. The events in these four issues cut a bloody swath across the entire Avengers landscape.”

“The world is becoming a horror show and no one has the power to stop it,” Maberry explains. “Then we look down at the street-level, at a man like Hawkeye who has no super powers and who isn’t really the go-to guy for a world-threatening crisis and for reasons we’ll explore in the story, he doesn’t succumb to the plague as quickly. More and more of the responsibility for this fight falls to him, and he’s extremely mortal.”

“View that same thing from another perspective and you see someone who has never been as powerful as his teammates, and yet he’s always held the line, always done his part. So, maybe he’s the kind of hero we need in a world where super powers are no longer the answer.”

“The world itself is broken, and the storytelling reflects that,” Maberry offers. “There is no longer an orderly pace to history, and if humanity survives, the history that’s taught will come from fragments of memory and experiences.

“I wanted to get inside the phenomenon of becoming ‘powerless.’ Many of the heroes lose their heroic status by becoming monsters; we have characters struggling to continue to be heroes while knowing that they are transforming into the enemy. The government and even groups like S.H.I.E.L.D. can’t stop this. The greatest brains on the planet—Reed Richards, Hank Pym, T’Challa—can’t solve this problem. We see how different characters cope with their friends/team-mates and loved ones becoming monsters.”

But in the end it’s all coming down to one man. The man with the arrows.

“That is a special kind of horror, and it’s a special kind of heroic tale,” Maberry promises. “I think people are going to bond pretty heavily with Hawkeye in this tale.”

Marvel continues teasing their next big event “This Is War”. While many fans speculated this could be the Ultron War it continues to look less and less like it. Could they be going against the government? The Punisher?! I’m calling it as The Punisher based on these teasers. Guess we will have to wait and find out at Comic-Con.
