The flood gates have opened!

The hottest thing on the internet this week is without a doubt Joseph Kahn’s dark and gritty Power Rangers fan film, and today the folks over at Saban have filed a DMCA take down request with YouTube/Vimeo and got his film TAKEN DOWN!

When the news of this incident came to me, I had to ask our official Power Ranger expert Eric Francisco for his take on the take down.

He informed me that Saban is very strict with the public image of the Rangers, and always wants it to be very kid friendly. This isn’t the first time a fan film has been a cease and desist notice.

Hopefully this all gets sorted out, as Josephs product was truly amazing.

Finally, it seems like we could end up with the live action Dragon Ball Z film that we deserve, but it’s not coming from 20th Century Fox.

Dragon Ball Z: The Fall of Men is a passion project from filmmakers Yohan Faure and Vianney Griffon, taking place in an alternate timeline where Cell has brought the Earth to the brink of destruction. Aiming to create a world without Goku or Vegeta to protect it, Cell is now systematically taking out the remaining Z Fighters, leaving Trunks as the planet’s final hope.

When you consider that the film is low budget by nature, the special effects are impressive! Seeing the way that the world was set up, the path of destruction Cell has left in his wake, and the desperation that the brief trailer sets up, and it’s clear that even with little to work with in the way of funds, these guys just get it. At the very least, the trailer manages to resemble DBZ more closely in a few short minutes compared to the entirety of Dragon Ball Evolution.

That’s not to say some liberties weren’t taken. With the intention of making a standalone version of what they thought a post Goku world would look like, the creators gave most of the characters a more realistic look, (so don’t go expecting purple and blue hair). Even Cell got a change in the looks department, taking bits and pieces from his three main forms to create a frightening, new version.

Excited yet? Check out the teaser trailer below, and get hyped like we have! If you want to show your support, head over to the team’s Indiegogo page and drop a couple of bucks. The whole world is at stake!

Briefly: Hollywood has been busy not making a live action version of Akira for well over a decade at this point. Naturally, some amazing fans decided to take matters into their own hands, and The Akira Project was born.

The is self-described as a “crowd-sourced, non-profit project meant to create a live action fan trailer of AKIRA, the renowned manga-turned-anime film from the late 1980′s; a stunning example of both mediums as art forms. While Hollywood has been working on a live-action Akira movie for a few years now, we, as fans, wanted to take a shot at making our own adaptation. A chance to stick as close to the source material as possible. A chance to do Akira Justice.”

And that’s exactly what they’ve done.

The group raised funds with a semi-succesful IndieGoGo campaign back in 2012, and the live-action Akira trailer has just been released online. It’s pretty much perfect, and should be an absolute treat for Akira fans. Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think! Be sure to head to The Akira Project’s official website for more info.

Briefly: My most anticipated next-gen launch game, Watch Dogs, may have been delayed until next year, but that hasn’t stopped director Brian Curtin and his team from crafting an amazing fan film based on the property.

The video takes us through what must be an average day in the life of Aiden Pearce, the game’s mysterious protagonist. He hacks, he fights, and he looks damn good doing it – this is one of the best fan films I’ve seen in a long time (though that live action Dead Island trailer was also pretty amazing).

Curtin explains the creation of the film:

Remember seeing that first gameplay video for Watch_Dogs, like a year ago? Not only was I drawn in by the characters and the mood, but the overall theme of everything being “connected”, it’s not too unrealistic for someone to have complete control in the palm of your hand. All of that gave us the itch to bring it to life and apparently many other fans felt the same way. Who would have thought there would be such a large number of fan films circulating, months before the game has been released. Crazy, I think Ubisoft is on to something. The best part about bringing Aiden to life was our opportunity to collaborate with Matthew Sumner (The man behind the mustache with Beat Down Boogie). Matthew and Annie Tee brought some extra flavor to our work, along with a killer original soundtrack from Tatenda Zvarayi, we hope to collaborate with more talented people in the future. )

Take a look at the video below, and let us know how much you’re longing for Watch Dogs.

Briefly: League of Legends fans, you’re going to love this.

You probably remember the fantastic Skyrim fan film, Into the Void, that Machinima debuted earlier this month, right? Well they’re at it again, and this time the’ve released two incredible projects based on the ever popular (though somehow I’ve still never played it) League of Legends.

Both videos come from George and Harry Kirby, the very same geeks who crafted an impressive Dragon Ball Z live action short earlier this year. First up, on Machinima Prime is League of Legends: Blind Ambition, which delves into the past of Lee Sin, the blind monk. You’ll learn how he was blinded, watch him battle the deadly assassin Katarina, and much, much more. Take a look at Blind Ambition below, and read on for the next video!

Next up, on Machinima Realm, is League of Legends: Shadowfall, a three-part miniseries that “follows the lore of Shen and Zed, two brothers training to become ninja warriors, whose sibling rivalry turns deadly when Zed embraces the shadow powers in order to overcome his brother.” Take a look at all three episodes below, and let us know what you think!

Machinima is certainly producing some great content these days. I can’t wait to see what comes next! Be sure to let us know what you thought of these shorts!

Briefly: Clocking in at just under five minutes, saying much of anything about First Impressions would simply spoil it too much.

In short, Leo Kei Angelos has crafted an immensely impressive, insanely well choreographed Wonder Woman fan film. The short stars Hailey Bright as a very capable Diana, Chester See as her date, and our pal Doug Jones as a bad guy with bad things to do.

Seriously, it’s five minutes, and it’s totally worth it. Check out the short below, and let us know what you think! CW / Warner Bros., whenever you finally get around to producing something Wonder Woman centric, you should definitely be calling up this guy.

This just came across my desk and I had to share. Jesse V. Johnson, who currently has his film The Package in theaters (starring Stone Cold Steve Austin and Geekscape favorite Dolph Lungren), just put out this awesome Fan Film/Trailer starring Wonder Woman.  The short stars Nina Bergman as Diana with Peter Stormare, Timothy V. Murphy and
Matthias Hues.

It’s a Deadman’s Party as the producers and star of the fan film “Requiem for a Deadman” join Tim and Sax. Producer and AVN Award Winner Nicki Hunter (“Naughty Office 19”) and  writer/star Wes Calimer (“Cutting Veggies”) discuss their labor of love and the hard road they encountered bringing Arnold Drake’s and Carmine Infantino’s baby to live-action. We discuss the relation between pornography fans and comics geeks (there isn’t much) as well as the benefits of kickstarter versus sponsorship. Learn what it takes to create a live-action version of a fan favorite comic book.

I know Geekscape has plenty of zombie fans out there, especially fans of Valve’s Left 4 Dead video game series. Here’s a little treat especially for you guys. Check out this gory and not safe for work fan film titled Seriously Left 4 Dead. The short was directed by Jason Forge. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Looks like friend of Geekscape, Thomas Jane wants another shot at playing The Punisher. He and his friends went so far as to make a short film to prove why that might actually be a good idea.

Jane has this to say on the YouTube page:

“I wanted to make a fan film for a character I’ve always loved and believed in – a love letter to Frank Castle & his fans. It was an incredible experience with everyone on the project throwing in their time just for the fun of it. It’s been a blast to be a part of from start to finish — we hope the friends of Frank enjoy watching it as much as we did making it.”

I got chills watching this.
