Briefly: Hankering for more Doug Jones after rewatching the sizzle reel for Geekscape’s own Paul London: Hero of the Prophecy, in which Jones plays the terrible, evil wizard searching for the all powerful ‘Artifact’? Wait, you have seen Hero of the Prophecy, right?

Doug has just revealed that he’ll be returning to the DC Universe (he played the Thin Clown in 1992’s Batman Returns), this time portraying Deathbolt on The CW’s Arrow.

Name doesn’t ring a bell? Yeah, I couldn’t recall it either. The character first appeared back in 1983 (seven long years before I was born), and according to the DC Wikia, his “body functions as a living electromagnetic battery. He can absorb, channel, and redirect electricity for offensive attack.” In Arrow, the character will “be a metahuman with the ability to harness and weaponize plasma energy.”

We love ourselves some Doug Jones, and we can’t wait for this episode. Doug will appear in this season’s nineteenth episode, which is called ‘Broken Arrow’. Oooh, ominous.

Premiere Of Paramount Pictures & Marvel Entertainment's "Captain America: The First Avenger" - Arrivals

Monster fans will be thrilled to learn that legendary creature actor, Doug Jones, will be playing the original vampire, Nosferatu! During Comikaze, the project’s creators hosted a panel talking about their project and Kickstarter campaign (Which is fully funded! Yay!). Jones, unfortunately, could not make it to the panel as he was filming in Vancouver, but he joined us briefly via Skype. With his long career portraying creatures/monsters, he has often been asked what role that he has not had a chance to play yet. He said he would ,”…love to play a classic vampire like Nosferatu.” Jones is no stranger to playing strange and unusual characters. During the Q&A, he was asked, “Was there anything particularly challenging about playing Nosferatu?” He replied that it is difficult when you take material that already has a huge fan base. Jones said he wants to be reverent to the original material but make it his own. This film will using a new technology where they can take the footage from the original and add new footage. They are calling it “Nosferatu – The Feature Film Remix”. Jones went on to say that he wants to make himself proud as an actor and to make the fans proud as well. As a fan of Doug Jones and monster movies, I cannot wait! Check out their Kickstarter campaign here to learn more about the film and spread the word!

The many iconic faces of Doug Jones

Seeing Doug Jones as Count Orlock is a pretty amazing thing. Imagine a feature film worth of this:

DougJoneOrlock

Doug Jones, along with director David Lee Fisher and a crew of exceptional talent (including Academy Award Nominated special effects artist Mike Elizalde) want to bring the horror classic Nosferatu back to life in an extremely interesting way.

They’re calling it Nosferatu – The Feature Film Remix, and are using technology they developed on previous projects to add and adapt original footage with new props and actors. The project’s Kickstarter video shows off some of this technology in motion, and it actually looks pretty unbelievable. As described, they call the technology a “visual remix.”  Nosferatu’s production will use this same revolutionary process, but to a much higher degree of quality due to great advances in software, cameras and computer power; allowing us higher cinematic quality and far more dynamic sets and locations.”

If you’re unfamiliar with Nosferatu, here’s how they describe it:

The original, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horrorwas the first vampire tale ever filmed, and is widely considered the cornerstone of horror cinema. Shot in 1921 and directed by F.W.Murnau, the film was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Upon its release, Stoker’s widow ordered all copies of the film burned. Fortunately a single print survived.

The history of the film is pretty amazing on its own, but Fisher, Jones, and crew re-adapting the film for a new audience could keep the legend alive for years and years to come.

Of course, to make this dream a reality (and to give Doug Jones what sounds like his dream role), this project needs our help. Nosferatu – The Feature Film Remix is sitting at just $34, 421 of its $60, 000 goal… with just eight days left to go. It’s a project that looks beyond deserving of our funds, and it’s one that really needs every dollar possible at this point to get there.

Of course, there are a ton of great rewards in store for backing Nosferatu. There’s the standards; DVD’s, digital copies, Blu Rays, etc. But there are also some extremely unique rewards available if one wants them badly enough; sculptures of Orlock in various sizes, Skype conversations with freaking Doug Jones himself, studio tours of Spectral Motion sound… this stuff all sounds incredible.

In any case, take a lookout the project’s Kickstarter video below, and head here to back! If you can’t back, share with your friends, as this is a project that we would all love to see happen.

Briefly: This one’s got just a few days left of it’s nearly-there Kickstarter campaign, and I definitely think that we can push it over the edge!

This one’s called 5th Passenger, and it’s an original science fiction/horror feature film with cast members from Star Trek and Stargate, and it also features a strong female lead! Kari actually had an opportunity to interview some of the creative team behind the project back in September 0f 2013, so if you’re looking for more 5th Passenger, be sure to head here.

Here’s the film’s plot:

Set in 2151, after the Yellowstone Caldera volcano erupts throwing the Earth into chaos, 5th Passenger tells the story of a secretly pregnant female officer and her four man crew adrift in deep space in an escape pod after their transport ship explodes before reaching the new home planet. They fight amongst themselves as they run low on air, but must work together to find a vicious alien hiding aboard their craft before it kills them all.

Sounds pretty cool, huh? Now check out their Kickstarter video, and read on for more info.

Yeah… this looks freaking awesome. And how about that cast and crew!? Doug Jones, Tim Russ, Marina Sirtis, Robert Picardo, Manu Intiraymi, Hana Hatae and even MORE!

As always, there are plenty of rewards up for grabs for people who back the project, including stills, digital downloads, premiere tickets, DVDs, autographs, producer credits, and more! There’s really something for everyone here, and with just three days left in its campaign, it needs just $3600 to make its goal.

You can head to the 5th Passenger Kickstarter page here, and be sure to let us know if you plan to back!

Briefly: It’s almost here!

A fourth season of Falling Skies was confirmed all the way back in July 2013, and now we’re just a couple of months away from its premiere.

TNT has just released a new trailer for the upcoming season… and since I’m not caught up, I turned it off pretty quickly. What I saw, however, was great, and I really can’t wait to see the new episodes.

Take a look at the trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you’ve thought of the series so far. Falling Skies premieres on June 22nd.

If you’ve been following Geekscape on Twitter and Facebook (and now on Youtube with GeekscapeTV!), then you’ve no doubt watched the sizzle reel for our Geekscape original series ‘Paul London: Hero of the Prophecy’. The idea came from my brother Paul, who thought it would be fun to do something Buck Rogers-ish for one of his wrestling photo shoots. He, Graham Douglas and his former tag partner Brian Kendrick went up to Griffith Park one day and shot some ridiculous promotional photos. When I saw them I thought he had lost his mind. Wrestling fans would never go for this… but geeks just might (I’m pretty sure I was wrong about the wrestling fans, who so far love it, but was right about the geeks!).

Paul London_groupshot_cropped
That’s Graham on the left… as ‘Finnegan’ for the first time!

I suggested to Paul that he get together with William Bibbiani and write up an idea for a webisode script. What William wrote is still one of the favorite things I’ve ever read… but it was too expensive. There was no way we could shoot it. Part of that was my fault. I told them to just go nuts, but as my producing partner Georg Kallert and I started to meet with people about what was now called ‘Paul London: Hero of the Prophecy’ it became clear that to make this series properly, with great wrestling and semi-passable 80s effects, it was going to take some money. Several doors were closed in our faces. It was a depressing time.

Ultimately, we decided to shoot the sizzle that you now see below on GeekscapeTV. Georg, William, Paul and I wrote something that we could afford from scratch, something that we could present to TV Networks and show them in a modest way what the show could be, especially the 80s nostalgic tone (and of course… the wrestling!). It wasn’t easy, as William had some hilarious ideas and I had trouble figuring out what we could afford to shoot in 3 days. Finally Paul, Georg, Graham, William and some of our friends (Brian Gilmore, Marisha Ray, Yuri Lowenthal, Nick Gregorio, Jason Trost, Kari Lane and Mr. Doug Jones) spent a few days shooting it after the dungeon/castle set was built and we had found a place in sunny Simi Valley that would work for the exteriors. We had to delay one day from the shoot for a few months due to Doug’s Falling Skies schedule but Doug is literally the sweetest man I’ve ever met in Hollywood (and one of the most talented) so it was definitely worth the wait! And of course, seeing him vaporize Gilmore wasn’t something I was going to compromise! I’d been waiting to see Gilmore killed on screen for years!

Mr. Doug Jones... the sweetest man in Hollywood!
Mr. Doug Jones… the sweetest man in Hollywood!

The days were fun and our love for 80s sci fi and fantasy films helped power us through the long hours (and the summer heat). Finally, after a few months of off and on editing, we arrived at the sizzle trailer that you see below. It’s a pitch piece that we can show people in order to tell them what ‘Paul London: Hero of the Prophecy’ could be, a celebration of nostalgia, wrestling and sword & sorcery (which is more popular today with Game of the Thrones and Lord of the Rings as it’s ever been) rolled up into a love letter to my brother Paul, a boy who grew up loving wrestling and achieved his dream of wrestling in the WWE at the age of 22. Now that those years are behind him and he’s off on life’s next adventure, I thought it would be a fun and sincere basis for a big, hilarious space and fantasy opera.

Please, if you enjoyed what you saw here, share ‘Paul London: Hero of the Prophecy’ with your friends, family… and even enemies! We want everyone to see what we’ve created in the hopes of keeping all of our childhood dreams and loves alive. That is why it’s so important to us here at Geekscape! And maybe, just maybe, with enough fan support or if it lands on the right set of eyes, the adventure will continue some more!

Briefly: Clocking in at just under five minutes, saying much of anything about First Impressions would simply spoil it too much.

In short, Leo Kei Angelos has crafted an immensely impressive, insanely well choreographed Wonder Woman fan film. The short stars Hailey Bright as a very capable Diana, Chester See as her date, and our pal Doug Jones as a bad guy with bad things to do.

Seriously, it’s five minutes, and it’s totally worth it. Check out the short below, and let us know what you think! CW / Warner Bros., whenever you finally get around to producing something Wonder Woman centric, you should definitely be calling up this guy.

San Diego is upon us! And just like in years past, the Geekscape booth has become a cool place to meet all sorts of creators and personalities (beyond our own)!

Briefly: Sci-Fi fans, you’re favourite alien drama is sticking around for at least one more year.

That’s right! Noah Wyle may have led some of us to believe that the series was coming to a close with his ominous quote a few days back: “As opposed to some of the other seasons where we’ve ended on a cliffhanger. This [finale] has more of a sense of closure, and completion.” But you can rest easy, as Falling Skies has just been renewed for a fourth season.

The Steven Spielberg produced drama actually ranks as the #1 drama on basic cable, so in that sense, the renewal is no surprise. The ten episode fourth season will premiere in Summer 2014!

Are you keeping up with the show? What have you thought of Season 3 so far?

FallingSkies

When I first started Geekscape in December of 2006, one of the first decisions I made was to apply for a San Diego Comic-Con booth. At the time, all applications sat at the end of a potential 4 year wait-list, but I knew that Geekscape was something that I wanted to create that would stand the test of time and that I could afford to be patient as it grew. In the Summer of 2010, Geekscape had its first booth on the SDCC floor. At the time, the wait-list was rumored to be 7 years and today, as Geekscape looks back on its 3rd year on the SDCC floor, the wait supposedly sits at 10. I haven’t always made the best decisions with this brand, but applying for real estate on the floor of the fan biggest convention in North America has easily been one of them.

And this year was our best year yet, both in terms of exposure, excitement and even sales. In fact, I was happy to discover that by 10am on Thursday, the morning of the first full day, we had sold more Geekscape t-shirts than during all four full days of last year’s SDCC. All weekend, while Scott Almaniana, Shawn Madden and the Geekscape press corps ran around bringing you fantastic Con coverage, Shane O’Hare and I weathered the constant barrage of visitors, fans and signings at the Geekscape booth. This summer, more than those past, the evidence was undeniable:  Geekscape is bigger and better than it ever has been. And I feel as though we’re just now really getting started. Thank the Old Gods that I’m patient, right?

The reasons for this surge in popularity are several, some planned, some not. First off, our site is finally something that can fully engage and keep an audience. With Shawn Madden and company keeping a steady stream of content on the site since our March relaunch, our numbers have steadily grown. At the time, we were the Top 260,000th site on web, with an average 30k pageview/month count. It was quite the sad state of affairs. In less than 6 months, we’re now on the verge of cracking into the Top 100,000 sites on the web with an average pageview/month of over 200k. We still have a ways to go, but there’s no denying that our mantra of consistency and quality is starting to show results. Add to this the brand new ScapePods, both regular and hopefully quality, and we’re really cooking with gas. In fact, I’ll soon be announcing some more audio podcasts to add to our slate of shows as I move my focus from the written content, now in solid hands, to the podcasts. They were our very start and I think that we can do more to get them out there to the audience that they all deserve… even The Saint Mort Show. Look for tweaks on the site in the coming months to help up the quality in what we do around here.

The FP‘s JTro and X-Men: First Class‘s Lucas Till drop by to say “what’s up” to Geekscape!

Another thing that’s helped us get our name out is our increase in friends. Geekscape was built as a resource for all like-minded geek creatives, and having folks like Doug Jones, Marc Zicree, Charlie Adard, Brea & Zane Grant and many others start to use it as a way to get the word out and share in our excitement is really rewarding. Their fans become excited about Geekscape. Geekscape fans become excited about their projects. And everyone wins. On Thursday, as my voice first started to fail (and I still had both our Comikaze/Stan Lee party and the Comics on Comics panel to go), Geekscape friends Jason Trost from The FP and Lucas Till from X-Men: First Class dropped by to talk to me about their upcoming project “Wet and Reckless“. I don’t have much news for you yet, but you know that as soon as I can share, you’ll see it shared on Geekscape! Across the board, creators like Mega 64, Jon Schnepp, Iain McCaig and more were excited for the first time to see what Geekscape had in the works (and there’s a lot).

On Friday, voice recovered as much as possible, The People VS George Lucas director Alexandre Philippe dropped by to deliver me a rare Japanese version of the film’s blu-ray (there is no US blu-ray).

In addition, we did an interview for our new Geekscape co-produced film Doc of the Dead with Fanboy Comix and held a fundraising poster signing with The Walking Dead artist Charlie Adlard (in an hour we raised $1,000).

I was also finally able to begin recording some GeekscapePods to send to you fine folks. My intent was always to record more throughout the weekend, but the fact is that between keeping the booth running, helping the autograph signings and maintaining everything else, I definitely overestimated my ability to record. I did get Charlie Adlard, FX legend Iaian McCaig, MMA fighter Nate Quarry (who dropped by and surprised me as I was closing up shop Friday night) and Sean Becker and Teal Sherer to record some things for you. In the end though, not recording more content for you guys is something that I regret and next year I hope to have both Shane O’Hare and Matt Kelly there to give me a chance to get you some more pods! I would also like to record some more pieces from Geekscapists walking the floor and sharing their experiences. So I’ll plan accordingly and here’s to next year (because we did already pay for next year so start making plans to be there)!

“More podcasts next year!”

The final positive of this year are all of the new friends that we made. I had a tough time leaving the booth and only managed to do so for about 10 minutes a day to walk the floor (although I did manage lunch on two days which I thank Shane O’Hare so much for allowing me to do)! In that time, I went and bought a Zomb for Laura and got to see Geekscape friends like Kevin Eastman and Daniel Corey at their respective booths. I also had a slew of new friends come to the booth like our booth neighbor Maddox, pro-wrestler John Morrison (who will be on an episode of Geekscape very soon) and convention wild-man Keith Apicary (who did not get kicked out!).

So that was our year at San Diego Comic Con from my perspective and some hints of what’s to come. Super Action Man made an appearance on the final day to scare some visitors (into loving him) and scripts for the next Geekscape project after Doc of the Dead went to a few folks in the know in order to get the ball rolling for next year. It’s an incredibly exciting time for Geekscape and things are only going to get better. San Diego Comic Con is always a benchmark for how far we’ve come over the years and a few days removed from this year’s experience, I find myself both amazed and grateful for how far we have come together in the years since I ordered booth space back in December 2006. Thank you all so much for being a part of it and just you wait to see what’s next!

Doug Jones, maybe the nicest guest we’ve ever had, is back on Geekscape! Doug talks about his new book “Mime Very Own Book”, his roles in the upcoming releases John Dies at the End and Neighborhood Watch and working with actors like Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn. He also shares his love for all things Abe Sapien and how he felt having his performance as the Silver Surfer ADR’ed. Also, what did Doug, a mime and often silent actor, think of “The Artist”? Also, Jonathan explains why “The Grey” is the funniest movie of the year and tells you why you should be reading B.P.R.D.!

I’m not that into Hellboy. I think he’s a cool looking character and Mike Mignola’s art is amazing. I think the stories are fun but it’s just a bit on the light side and I could never get too invested in them. I am, however, a huge fan of Guillermo Del Toro. So I was quite excited when the first Hellboy came out. It gave a filmmaker I adored a fun world to play in. The end result came off a bit like the Hellboy comics though. It was fun, it looked cool, but I just couldn’t bring myself to care too much.

Since the release of Hellboy, Guillermo Del Toro has grown immensely as a filmmaker and has proven himself to have one of the most vivid imaginations of any director working today. He has also earned critical acclaim and his name now carries some weight. So it’s a new, more powerful Del Toro who is tackling Hellboy 2, and it shows.

Hellboy 2 is a wild ride through a mad genius’ imagination. Del Toro finally had the freedom to go all out and every inch of the screen is filled with amazing little details. He took Mike Mignola’s world and really made it his own without betraying the source material, and in doing so turned something I only kind of liked into something I loved.

Yes, I loved Hellboy 2. I think it improves on the original in every way. The story is clearer and better told, the action is more spectacular, the visuals are breathtaking, and the characters that matter were front and center. In Hellboy we were forced to view this world through the eyes of a human outsider and as such we were one step removed from everything. This time we are with Hellboy and his crew and we are thoroughly entrenched in their world and it makes us do something we didn’t the first time around. It makes us care.

Luckily we have a good story to care about. The plot of Hellboy 2 is very simple but it’s told in an incredibly strong manner. There is a thing the bad guys want and that the good guys can’t let them have. That thing of course doesn’t really matter. It’s a classic MacGuffin that just serves as an excuse to get our characters moving. We aren’t buried under boring exposition. The real meat of the movie is with the characters and their relationships. Everyone gets screen time here and their characters are very clearly and strongly defined. We watch as Hellboy deals with doubt over his place in the world, as Liz deals with fear over the future of her family, as Abe deals with an impossible romance. We also get a villain who isn’t just “evil”. He’s not a cardboard cutout. He has depth and he has purpose and he is sympathetic, and that makes all the difference in the world.

Character and plot are all well and good, but the real star of the show here is the art design and makeup work. There are very few humans in this movie but there are tons of monsters and they all exist. What I mean by that is these aren’t empty CG shells. This isn’t one character design repeated ad naseum in a computer. These are wall to wall crazy creatures made with practical effects and makeup. They have personality, they have life, and it’s absolutely wonderful to watch. That’s not to say there isn’t any CG but it is used sparingly, and it is used to enhance rather than replace.

I was really taken aback by all of the different character designs on display here. It’s either an effects department’s wet dream or worst nightmare. The Troll Market scene in particular steals the show and has been getting a lot of comparisons to the Cantina scene in Star Wars. For my money this outdoes Star Wars by a large margin.

Makeup can only go so far without a skilled actor making it move and all the major players bring their A game here. Perlman IS Hellboy. He is so comfortable in the role and completely makes you forget that there is a nearly 60 year old human in there. Doug Jones finally gets to use his real voice in a movie and, even though I preferred David Hyde Pearce, does an admirable job as Abe Sapien. His true talent lies in his body language though and in this department he is second to none. The big surprise this time around was Seth MacFarlane, of Family Guy fame, as Johann Krauss, the German accented gas… guy. He provides some of the funniest moments in the film and is a very welcome addition.

I feel like I should say something negative about the movie, but there is really very little wrong with it. Kid Hellboy looks kind of stupid. Abe’s relationship with the elf princess seems a bit abrupt and he makes a questionable decision because of it that you don’t quite buy. I’m really having to try to nit pick here.

Point is, the movie is awesome and I’m kind of bummed that The Hobbit is going to keep us from seeing Hellboy 3 for quite some time.
