In the year 2005, TNT picked up a show called The Closer, about a Deputy Chief by the name of Brenda Leigh Johnson, who worked on some of the cruelest cases brought to the LAPD’s front door. Fast forward seven years, the series star Kyra Sedgwick said goodbye to her crew and audiences said hello to Mary McDonnell and Sharon Raydor for Major Crimes. Now, the show is saying goodbye again.

In a span of 13 years, the crew and a majority of the cast stayed together. From the pilot of The Closer, to the finale of Major Crimes, hundreds of hours were spent on creating unique cases, suspects and victim’s stories that were unique, characters that were relatable and memorable, friendships that were unforgettable. At the helm of all of this is James Duff; the visionary behind the characters, the cases, the idea.

We at Geekscape had the privilege to speak to Mr. Duff before the season began, on the heels of it’s cancellation. Since then a lot has happened. Storylines hit close to home for some, the loss of a main character struck a nerve, and the realization that saying goodbye to this show was imminent. Now with the ending of the series upon us, we spoke to him again.

With the show being one of, if not the top-rated show for TNT, it’s a bittersweet farewell. Over the last few years the show went from their usual Monday night time slot, which it held for 10 years, to Wednesday, to ultimately Tuesday nights. Their ratings held. Their audience kept coming back. For good reason.

The show had interesting characters. Cases that rung true to ways of life and provided an insight into the lives of LAPD officers. Characters made the transition from The Closer to Major Crimes with new characters being introduced and settling into our hearts. One of those characters was portrayed by Mary McDonnell, who was nominated for her work on The Closer, as Captain Sharon Raydor.

Fans were forced to say goodbye to Sharon Raydor, when her character died four episodes before the end of the show. In a move that upset a lot of fans, we asked James what caused him to make that move.

“We wanted the audience to let go with us,” Duff remarked. “We knew the audience was going to fight, that the audience was going to struggle and not want us to go.”

It was announced in the summer that Billy Burke, who Duff claimed to be a genius, would be returning to the show as the serial killer Phillip Stroh. With Sharon Raydor gone, the team is left vulnerable in their grief- much like the fans who are reeling with her departure.

“The archetype of the leader, taking her band of heroes to the battle, but can’t be allowed to participate is not new.” Duff said.

When asked if Sharon Raydor was ever going to be involved in this battle with Phillip Stroh, he answered, “No.”

“To me it’s an expression of my heart and soul,” Duff said, in regard to the show and the show ending. “I wanted to grieve and I wanted the audience to grieve with us.”

The final table read was bittersweet. The final days of shooting were bittersweet. Saying goodbye to these characters, difficult and emotional.

“The feeling of loss permeated our company. No one felt it more keenly more than I did,” Duff added. “It’s admitting that the show was over.”

Now that the show is over, screen has gone black, the question is What’s next?

“I have a couple features back to back that I’m writing,” he told us. “We’ll see if they’ll get made. I have a pilot that I’m shopping.”

Being involved in this show for the last thirteen years, he claimed “I haven’t really had an opportunity to think of the future.”

With the show ending, Duff hopes that there can be things in the future that will allow this family that was created to come together once again.

Major Crimes aired on TNT.

Sanctuary City, which premieres it’s penultimate episode tonight, is said to be an emotional episode. Tensions are high. As for the rest of the season? Well, Tony Denison, also known as Andy Flynn on the show, gave us a little bit of an insight into an event that fans are anticipating, the relationship between Flynn and Provenza, as well as the end of the show.

Andy Flynn last season was benched due to health problems. He watched the building his fiancée, best friend, and team were inside of blow up after trying and somewhat successfully being the hero. This season we see him back in the field with a few moderations.

“He’s recouping his health. He’s on the mend,” Tony Denison said. “There are some really heroic things that Andy does in the show and like James [Duff] said, not to toot my own horn, but some of the acting I’ve done this season is the best acting I’ve done.”

James Duff commented on the acting of Tony Denison and Mary McDonnell in a previous interview, which can be read here.

Coming on the heels of Mary McDonnell’s character, Sharon Raydor, passing out in the middle of the squad room, there is apprehension. As Duff said in his previous interview, she puts on the breaks.

“He wants to assure her that everything is going to be okay,” Denison said, commenting on the case his character had to make to Sharon. “That I’m going to be fine. She wanted everything to be clean or else she wouldn’t have gone through with the wedding.”

As for the wedding, Denison commented that, “they lit Mary in a way that when she walked down the aisle she looked like an angel.”

The lighter episodes that always seem to be fan favorites are those that involve Denison’s character and G.W. Bailey’s Provenza, a gruff and at times cranky Lieutenant who has years of experience on the force.

While they are not having as much fun as they used to have, Denison commented that, “It’s something GW and I miss. It’s difficult for us to go onto capers that go into mishaps. Maybe if the show had gotten another year, maybe that would have happened.”

Speaking to the end of the show and the possibility that the show may come back Denison remarked, “You never know. The only thing you can be sure about is that you can’t be sure about anything.”

Major Crimes airs on TNT at 9PM EST, 8CST on Tuesday nights.

It’s back!  TNT’s top rated show, Major Crimes, will be returning late October. October 31st to be exact.

The last time audiences saw the Major Crimes team, their headquarters blew up, courtesy of an angry citizen who wanted revenge on the LAPD. The last season ended with a multi-episode arc, which is a format TNT have taken to. When the show comes back, it will deal with three  multi-episode arcs, each dealing with various complexities . While the team deals with changing times in both their professional and personal lives, hiding in the shadows is the return of Billy Burke’s character, Phillip Stroh, a serial killer, who fans haven’t seen since the end of season 3, when he escaped detainment.

In the trailer below, the Major Crimes deals with a trio of boys who have gone missing, lots of money, and a new Assistant Chief who wants to know what makes the case they are dealing with a Major Crime.

Major Crimes, will air on Tuesday, October 31st, at 9pm Eastern 8pm Central, on TNT.

Oh hell yes! TNT’s The Librarians has just been renewed for a second season.

From the press release:

TNT has renewed its hit fantasy-adventure The Librarians. One of the hottest new shows on cable, The Librarians burst onto the scene with a chart-topping launch in December and went on to finish the year as basic cable’s #2 new series of 2014, second only to TNT’s The Last Ship. The show’s success extends across TNT’s multiple platforms, with each week’s episode reaching an average of 11.4 million viewers through linear telecasts, DVR playback and VOD, digital and mobile viewing. TNT has ordered 10 episodes for the second season, which is slated to launch later this year.

I’m going to be honest, those big numbers surprise me. There is virtually zero passion for the show from other geeks that I can see, and it was hardly discussed on other outlets and blogs. Hell, even we here at Geekscape remained relatively quiet on this delightful series.

The Librarians was one of the best and woefully underrated new TV shows from last fall. I was concerned its lifespan would be cut short due to lack of buzz, but my worries have been relieved.

If you haven’t watched the series yet, go out of your way to do so. In one word, it’s fun. It has the spirit of Guardians of the Galaxy but with B-movie/genre TV sensibilities. I’m in love with the characters and the world they have been thrown in. The premise has opened their doors to literally anything, and in its first season the show has lived up to that. Haunted houses, Santa Claus, minotaurs, even a U.N. for fucking DRAGONS. It’s great stuff.

We may be rooting for other, lesser-known shows like Constantine, but in this golden age of television our television adventures have been too quick to explore the darker reaches of the human condition. I’m not condemning this, but we’ve rendered whimsy and wide-eyed points-of-view into something uncool. We’ve belittled optimism and hope, and it’s kind of made us all too moody. Even our beloved Doctor, in his Twelfth form, and the once wise-cracking Green Arrow have become something darker than they probably should be.

Check out The Librarians on TNT and add a little pep to your step. When you watch, I dare you not to smile.

TNT’s new hit drama, The Last Ship, was at Comic Con to talk about the show, what to expect in the last half of season one, and where the show will go in the just announced 13-episode season 2.

Geekscape had a chance to speak with the cast and creators of the Micheal Bay produced virus-killing-the-world-apocalyptic series. With us were executive producers Hank Steinberg and Steven Kane, and cast members Eric Dane (Grey’s Anatomy), Adam Baldwin (Firefly) Rhona Mitra (Underworld: Rise of the Lycans), Charles Parnell (Fringe), and Travis Van Winkle (Happy Endings).

Loosely based on the book of the same name by William Brinkley (or, as Dane said “we share a name and a title, and that’s about it”), The Last Ship follows Captain Tom Chandler (Dane) as the captain of the U.S.S. Nathan James, Dr. Rachel Scott (Mitra), who may have the cure; XO Mike Slattery (Baldwin), who’s loyalty to Chandler is tested by the decisions the Captain must make; Lt. Danny Green, the leader of the Naval Mountain Warfare Unit; Lt. Kara Foster (Marissa Neitling, Leverage) a combat officer in the CIC; and Command Master Chief Russell Jeter (Parnell), who leads the ship’s enlisted men and woman as they struggle to find  a cure for a deadly virus that is decimating earth’s population.

“In this world, 100 people die every day. So we’ve got this ticking clock occurring in the show.” said Dane. “It’s apocalypse now. It’s still unfolding.”

The show has a very close working relationship with the US Navy, including shooting the majority of shipboard scenes on actual in-use Navy vessels. In order to work with the Navy’s schedule, show creators had to write the entire first season so that almost all shipboard scenes could be shot during a tight three-week window provided by the Navy.

“It was a little insane. We had no idea what we were doing, or where it fell into the season as a whole sometimes.” said Baldwin with a laugh. “We’d go from episode 3, scene 4, to episode 9, scene 8. It could get a little confusing. But being able to work on the actual ship, was incredible.”

In addition to shooting on Navy ships, the show has US Navy advisers both in the writer’s room and on set, and a number of the extras in the show are actual Navy personnel. To thank the Navy for all of their support, the cast and crew flew out to Washington D.C. for a special premiere of the pilot for the US Navy early this summer.

“Some times, they had a completely different reaction then non-military audiences.” said Van Winkle. “In the scene where I kiss Kara, most audiences were like, ‘whatever,’ but the Navy guys just blew up. ‘Cause they knew what a big deal it was.”

Kane elaborated: “I think the best moment I had so far was when we were in Washington D.C., and young Navy woman came over to me, and thanked me–and the show–for the moment with Christina’s character, [LTJG Granderson], for showing a same-sex relationship in the Navy with such honesty, and for having that in the show.”

As for what fans can expect in the rest of season one and going into season two?

“Slattery and Chandler definitely are going to continue to have some issues.” said Baldwin. “It’s the nature of the situation and the XO and CO relationship.”

“I think fans are going to be absolutely shocked by how season one ends.” said Steinberg. “Season two is going to build but also take us in some different directions.”

“Episode nine is the big musical episode.” said Van Winkle.

Unfortunately we couldn’t get anyone else to confirm this.

Watch the Comic Con exclusive trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments!

I am not exactly sure why but I am particularly fond of post-apocalyptic stories. Maybe it is the uncertain future or all the strange possibilities after a disaster? Well, I was excited to learn that TNT has a new drama show coming out Sunday June 22nd at 9/8c that is not quite post-apocalyptic, but rather, it is apocalyptic. The Last Ship is a show where the disaster is currently happening!

When a global pandemic wipes out eighty percent of the planet’s population, the crew of a lone naval destroyer must find a way to pull humanity from the brink of extinction.

Executive Producer Michael Bay presents The Last Ship, starring Eric Dane, Rhona Mitra and Adam Baldwin.

At WonderCon 2014, during The Last Ship panel, Executive Producer Hank Steinberg talked about the inspiration for the show saying, “The story was brought to us by TNT” and it is based on an 80s book where the Cold War was the “disaster.” The draw was that it is a story about “people alive at sea…alone” (Steinberg). The producers wanted to explore the existential and emotional journey and see how the captain would keep the crew together. To update the show, producers/creators considered global thermal nuclear war because some people could survive that, but they opted for a global pandemic since it is much more realistic and “they can solve it” (Steinberg). Steinberg compared The Last Ship to Star Trek by stating, “we have a ticking clock with a sense of urgency and if they can solve this, they can get back to their families and save them.”

THE LAST SHIP

Having a ship as the setting, “opens up the possibility to go anywhere” explained Executive Producer Steven Kane. He went on to say that the “missions of the first season are based on the needs of the scientists.” Also, there will be a lot of moving around within the ship.

The actors at the Q&A, Charles Parnell (Commander Master Chief) and Travis Van Winkle (Lt. Danny Green), mentioned how they both trained with the military. Parnell even read up on the origins of the navy during his own research. Van Winkle trained with Navy Seals and felt that it was “inspiring to hear their stories,” and that it was a blessing to work with them.

So what makes this an intriguing show? It is a sci-fi in a very pure sense because the science is actually based in reality. The show is philosophical and looks at what it means to be human/civilized. Every day that they are not back with the vaccine, more people die; they really are the last hope. The Executive Producers also said it will have different types of heroes than we have seen before. Sounds good to me! Make sure to check out The Last Ship Sunday June 22nd!

Briefly: It’s almost here!

A fourth season of Falling Skies was confirmed all the way back in July 2013, and now we’re just a couple of months away from its premiere.

TNT has just released a new trailer for the upcoming season… and since I’m not caught up, I turned it off pretty quickly. What I saw, however, was great, and I really can’t wait to see the new episodes.

Take a look at the trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you’ve thought of the series so far. Falling Skies premieres on June 22nd.

I was thrilled to learn that there will be a new TV show based on The Librarian trilogy! The Librarians will be a continuation of the successful TNT films (The Librarian: Quest for the Spear, The Librarian: Return to King Solomon’s Mines, and The Librarian: Cure of the Judas Chalice) starring Noah Wyle as the librarian charged to guard ancient/mystical artifacts. Not sure what I am talking about?

Well, the first Librarian film came out in 2004 and I saw it while working at Hollywood Video (remember that ancient place?). I thought it was such a fun film and was quick to watch the well done sequels over the next several years. If you like movies such as National Treasure and Indiana Jones then you will enjoy The Librarian films (and hopefully enjoy the new TV show as well). They are full of action and adventure, lots of humor and they are extremely smart.

Wyle’s character, Flynn Carsen, has 22 college degrees, is socially awkward and does not have much direction in his life. He finds himself at the Metropolitan Public Library and applies to be a librarian. The library holds more than just books though. It turns out to be the place where mystical artifacts such as Excalibur, Pandora’s Box, and the Holy Grail (just to name a few) are stored. It is the job of the librarian to locate these items in the world and bring them safely to the library.

The TV series will be set 10 years after Flynn started working for the library which is cool because it parallels the real world timeline (remember the first film came out in 2004). Being the librarian can be a tough job so now he will be working with a team.

To aid him in his duties, the Library has recruited four people from around the world, including Eve Baird (Rebecca Romijn), a highly skilled counter-terrorism agent who is responsible for protecting the group and keeping them all alive; Jake Stone (Christian Kane), an Oklahoma oil worker with an IQ of 190 and an encyclopedic knowledge of art history; Cassandra (Lindy Booth), a quirky young woman with the special gift of auditory and sensory hallucinations linked to memory retrieval, known as synesthesia; and Ezekiel Jones (John Kim), a master of new technologies and aficionado of old classic crimes who enjoys playing the role of international man of mystery.

TNT has ordered ten episodes of The Librarians with the intent of launching the series later this year and I cannot wait to check it out!

Briefly: Sci-Fi fans, you’re favourite alien drama is sticking around for at least one more year.

That’s right! Noah Wyle may have led some of us to believe that the series was coming to a close with his ominous quote a few days back: “As opposed to some of the other seasons where we’ve ended on a cliffhanger. This [finale] has more of a sense of closure, and completion.” But you can rest easy, as Falling Skies has just been renewed for a fourth season.

The Steven Spielberg produced drama actually ranks as the #1 drama on basic cable, so in that sense, the renewal is no surprise. The ten episode fourth season will premiere in Summer 2014!

Are you keeping up with the show? What have you thought of Season 3 so far?
