We’re inevitably trapped in an era of recycled work. Therefore, when news broke of a new installment to the Bad Boys franchise, I was hesitant to let my excitement get the better or me. Sometimes we’re handed some freshly polished rehashes like last year’s Shazam! and dare I say the controversial Joker, but for the most part these reboots are just mindless and unoriginal money grabs hoping to cash in on familiarity and nostalgia. So while I wouldn’t allow myself to get too invested in Bad Boys for Life (I hadn’t even watched a trailer for the film), my adoration for the series’ first two installments made me anxious to reconnect with these two foul-mouthed police officers.

Things have changed for law enforcement partners Mike Lowery (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence). Marcus is a new grandfather which prompts his talks of retirement once again, while Mike discovers troubles of his own when he becomes the target of the son from a past arrest. These two ride-or-die partners embark on one last hurrah to stop this young and deadly assassin from killing Mike.

Michael Bay, director of both the original film and its sequel, built a foundation on pulse-pumping action and laugh out loud humor that allowed the two young comedic actors, Smith and Lawrence, to shine brightly in their roles. However, a 16-and-a-half-year hiatus brings about noticeable aging in the film’s leading pair and it proves problematic. Everything about Bad Boys for Life feels older and slower. From the relaxed pacing to a disappointing reliance on geriatric humor, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah’s new inclusion to the series lacks energy and bravado. Even its action-sequences seem to move at a more leisurely pace. In addition, an unnecessarily elaborate and inefficient story plague this melodramatic screenplay. Bad Boys for Life takes a lot of emotional swings, mostly as a substitution for the many moments where hilarity would take the reins in previous films, and the result is certainly underwhelming. And the movie’s primary “twist”, one that’s clearly shoe-horned into the story for dramatic effect, culminates in an unrealistic and brutally-forced manner. But despite all of the film’s obvious faults, blame shouldn’t be directed at Will Smith or Martin Lawrence, both of whom appear fully committed to the effort, their chemistry remains apparent and their characters stay true to form. Bad Boys for Life stands as a worthless and mediocre inclusion to the series as life after Michael Bay proves futile for the franchise.

Briefly: I’ve been pretty vocal about my distaste for the Transformers film series over the past few years (tl:dr – huge fan of the cartoon and comic books, severely let down by the first film, and never watched another), so with the release of the first teaser for next Summer’s Transformers: The Last Knight, I have a lot of questions about what this series has become.

Here are a few examples:

-Why is Optimus Prime dead?
-How can humans still be fighting Transformers after five movies?
-Why does this trailer start way, way, way back in the past?
-How did this film get Anthony Hopkins on board?
-As someone who’s only seen the first film… are any of these movies worth watching?

Again, that’s not a conclusive list based on this pretty confusing trailer. Aside from not making any sense to me, I thought that the trailer had some epic moments, and some fantastic effects.

Someone should definitely answer my questions in the comments below, and everyone else can take a look at the first teaser! Transformers: The Last Knight hits theatres on June 23rd!

Briefly: Following the awesome look at the film from the Super Bowl back in February (which gave us our fantastic first look at Krang and more), and that fantastic ‘final’ trailer, Paramount has just debuted another new look at next month’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. This time around, it’s all about Rocksteady and Bebop.

While the first film had its (long list of) issues, overall I actually enjoyed the film as a whole. In any case, essentially everything that we’ve seen thus far from Out of the Shadows looks so much better than anything that we saw in the first film.

“TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS” is the sequel to the 2014 hit film “TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES.” The film is based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles characters created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman and is directed by David Green (“EARTH TO ECHO”). Michael Bay (the “TRANSFORMERS franchise) returns to produce alongside his Platinum Dunes partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form (” TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES”), with Galen Walker and Scott Mednick (“TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES”) also producing.

Also returning for the sequel is Megan Fox (“TRANSFORMERS”) as April O’Neil, Will Arnett (“Arrested Development”) as Vernon Fenwick and the Turtles: Alan Ritchson as Raphael, Noel Fisher as Michelangelo, Pete Ploszek at Leonardo, and Jeremy Howard as Donatello. Rounding out the cast is Stephen Amell (“Arrow,”) as Casey Jones, Tyler Perry (“GONE GIRL”, the “MADEA” franchise) as Baxter Stockman, Academy Award nominated actress Laura Linney (“The Big C”, “LOVE ACTUALLY”) as Chief Rebecca Vincent, Brian Tee (“JURASSIC WORLD”) as Shredder, WWE World Heavy Weight Champion Stephen “Sheamus” Farrelly as Rocksteady and Gary Anthony Williams (“THE INTERNSHIP”) as Bebop.

Briefly: Following the awesome look at the film from the Super Bowl earlier this month (which gave us our fantastic first look at Krang and more), Paramount Pictures has just debuted four slick character posters for this Summer’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.

Naturally, each of the four brother’s gets a dedicated poster, and while we’d have loved to see one for Arrow star Stephen Amell’s Casey Jones as well, these images are actually pretty damned cool.

Take a look at the four images below, and be sure to let us know if you’re looking forward to the film! We’re also interested in hearing what you thought of that controversial first film!

As one of the many Super Bowl commercials that have graced our screens during the big game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out Of The Shadows gave us glimpses of what’s in store for Leo, Mikey, Don and Raph, and I have to be honest; it’s looking pretty great!

As a follow up to the controversial 2014 film produced by Michael Bay, this upcoming film looks to introduce elements of the Turtles lore that haven’t been explored as deeply, (or at all,) across its many live action iterations. Seeing WWE Superstar, Sheamus, as Rocksteady pre-Rhino transformation, the return of Shredder, and the Turtle Van speeding through New York are sure to stand out as crowd pleasing moments, it’s Krang’s film debut that really stands out, with a great looking human suit to boot.

I’m someone who usually can’t stand Bay’s recent work, but seeing Krang in action, and knowing that Arrow star, Stephen Amell, will be playing the hockey mask wearing vigillante, Casey Jones, and my attention is starting to turn. Watch the trailer for yourself and let us know if you’re looking forward to the next installment in the Bay-verse Turtle series, and share your thoughts in the comments!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 will rise from the shadows on June 3rd.

Transformers 5 should leave no one surprised or excited.

Much like hurricane season, or any other annual destructive force that looms on the horizon, the fifth installment in the visual torment that is the Transformers live action series will soon be upon us. Instead of raving about what new Autobot or Decepticon could be featured, or which star got suckered in for a Metroplex sized paycheck to appear in this schlock fest, the remainder of this article will be used to inform you, the public, what can be done about the impending CGI shit storm headed your way Summer of 2017.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, a comment that’s certainly just a rye comment, director Michael Bay jokes, “I’m doing Transformers… 5, is it?” Let’s holster our rage for just a moment and consider the obvious objective facts; first, these movies lack anything that resembles any effort in regards to narrative. Second, these movies exist to sell merchandize. Third, they will never stop making these films as long as they continue to rake in millions of dollars.

Certainly there are a few diehard consumers of the Transformers live action series who will assert that the cinematic eye gouging that appears on screen is actually a film. For those that like to argue that shit is really gold, please direct yourselves here, here, and here for a counter point that unveils the curtain on the practical joke of a film franchise that refuses to die. Ladies and gentlemen of the internet, It’s time to unanimously concede that this joke has long since worn out it’s… well, it would have had to have been funny in the first place: it was not.

It’s time for Transformers to fold itself back up and remain on the toy shelf where it belongs.

It’s time we the people, the geeks, the nerds start demanding better content. But, and this is the important part, that demand does not come in the form of flame wars on the internet. The only thing that Paramount Pictures will understand is when we stop mindlessly throwing our money into this outhouse of a film franchise expecting it to transform into something better: it will not.

So when you hear any further Transformers movie news from here on out, cover your ears, save your hard earned money, and roll out to any of these alternatives coming to your cinema 2017.

Us right now.
Us right now.

Over the last ten years, Michael Bay has blessed us with not one, not two, NOT THREE, but four Transformer movies.  Aren’t we lucky?  If it’s possible, each one less successful than it’s predecessor (this coming from a Michael Bay fanboy).  So, when news broke that Bay would be handling a story based on true events in Benghazi, Libya titled ‘13 Hours’, my interest was piqued because it was finally something different (yes Pain and Gain also came out in this time period, but it was typical Michael Bay flash with no substance).  Now that the trailer has dropped for his new film, my interest has skyrocketed!  Check it out below:

The film based on true events follows a team of “security operators” who attempt to repel a terrorist attack on the United States embassy in Benghazi, Libya in 2012.  You can 100% tell from the trailer that it is a Michael Bay film based on the cinematography and score alone, but this looks to be a more sophisticated and reserved director who doesn’t look to be leaning on comedic elements like he often does in his films.*crosses fingers*

The film much more resembles Black Hawk Down, Lone Survivor or Zero Dark Thirty than it does any of Bay’s previous work.  Granted this is just a two minute snippet of a two hour movie, but this first look, and Jim Halpert looking yolked, is extremely promising.  ‘13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi’ is set to be released on January 15, 2016.

Briefly: Last month we learned that Stephen Amell would mask up as Casey Jones in next year’s fast-tracked Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, and today a new cast member was revealed for the project.

Variety has learned that The Wolverine‘s Brian Tee has joined the project as Shredder. The character was played by Tohoru Masamune in the 2014 reimagining. We had Brian on the show back in 2013, and we’re definitely excited to see what he can do for the beloved villain.

Details on the film are still few (it was first announced back in August), but both Megan Fox and Will Arnett are set to return, while Earth to Echo director Dave Green will take the reigns from Jonathan Liebesman.

I have to say that, while I was definitely not looking forward to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles last year, the film turned out to be a fun, yet forgettable time. It was almost, almost worth it for the cowabunga alone, don’t you agree?

Are you looking forward to the sequel? What did you think of the first film? Sound out below! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 hits theatres on June 3rd, 2016!

Briefly: Variety has learned that Arrow star and heartthrob Stephen Amell has been cast as Casey Jones in the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel. More than six actors were said to have tested for the role, and Amell was apparently chosen due to his chemistry with Fox.

I shouldn’t have to remind you but my social media feeds say otherwise. As we reported earlier, Jonathan Liebesman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles did gangbusters at the box office, about $65 million, so plans for a sequel have already started. And it could be your fault.

There were a lot of groans about the film’s success. There was the usual hyperbolic speak about losing faith in Hollywood (you shouldn’t have faith there to begin with), and film snobs I’m friends with/follow mourned the death of cinema. It’s a bit of an overstatement and people need to relax a little, but it’s easy to see why they’re screaming fire at smoke. A 19% on Rotten Tomatoes is ugly, and knowing what kind of film Ninja Turtles is — a big, noisy reimagining of a children’s cartoon* from two decades ago — one would be inclined to believe that, yeah, maybe people are stupid after all. Let’s just give up. Stop everything. Art is dead (relax, it’s not).

The issue here is that people saw this coming, and they still went to see it.

I don’t blame you if you genuinely love the turtles. Maybe there is a big enough of a fandom that will spend $65 million to see the movie, but I doubt that. Do I have enough friends? Because I’ve met people from all fandoms and I have never met a genuine Ninja Turtles fan, and I have been to Power Rangers conventions. From what I gathered from friends, acquaintances, and total strangers on the internet,  it seems a chunk of that $65 million came from people who just wanted to be right about how they saw this trainwreck coming. And if that was you, fuck you, this is your fault.

You have no right to complain about how bad Ninja Turtles was if you willingly bought a ticket knowing it isn’t the kind of film you want. You vote with your dollar, and you just voted for the bad guy. You helped the system. You proved them right. They don’t care about a Rotten Tomatoes score or your Twitter status. They have your money and they’re going to do it again.

I don’t know how good or awful (probably awful) Ninja Turtles is. This weekend, I chose to see old friends from high school at a graduation barbecue. I didn’t see any movies. I will watch it one day, I’m sure. On a Sunday afternoon on FX, perhaps. I don’t want to trash something before I experience it, because that is just as terrible. But if you’re aware of the culture’s climate, you know what you’re getting into. I know what I’m getting into, and I’ll behave accordingly.

If you don’t want movies like Ninja Turtles, then don’t go see them. I’ve seen you complaining and it’s dumb that you are. Next time a movie like this waltzes into theaters, I hope I don’t have to write something like this again.

*=I’m well aware of the original Ninja Turtles books from Eastman and Laird, but we know that isn’t what the movie was cashing in on at all.

Briefly: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hasn’t even made it through its first weekend at this point, but according to Deadline, Paramount has just confirmed that a sequel is in the works.

As much as I hated on the new turtles film back when the character designs and the first trailers arrived, I’m hearing from countless comic book and TMNT fans that the film is a lot of fun (albeit a bit messy). I didn’t get a chance to head to the theatre this weekend, but I’m now looking forward to watching the film sometime next week.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles screenwriters Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec will return for the sequel, as will producer Michael Bay. It’s unknown at this point, however, whether director Jonathan Liebsman will return for the feature.

The as-yet-untitled sequel will hit theatres on June 3th, 2016.

Did you catch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles this weekend? What did you think? Are you down with a sequel? Sound out below!

TNT’s new hit drama, The Last Ship, was at Comic Con to talk about the show, what to expect in the last half of season one, and where the show will go in the just announced 13-episode season 2.

Geekscape had a chance to speak with the cast and creators of the Micheal Bay produced virus-killing-the-world-apocalyptic series. With us were executive producers Hank Steinberg and Steven Kane, and cast members Eric Dane (Grey’s Anatomy), Adam Baldwin (Firefly) Rhona Mitra (Underworld: Rise of the Lycans), Charles Parnell (Fringe), and Travis Van Winkle (Happy Endings).

Loosely based on the book of the same name by William Brinkley (or, as Dane said “we share a name and a title, and that’s about it”), The Last Ship follows Captain Tom Chandler (Dane) as the captain of the U.S.S. Nathan James, Dr. Rachel Scott (Mitra), who may have the cure; XO Mike Slattery (Baldwin), who’s loyalty to Chandler is tested by the decisions the Captain must make; Lt. Danny Green, the leader of the Naval Mountain Warfare Unit; Lt. Kara Foster (Marissa Neitling, Leverage) a combat officer in the CIC; and Command Master Chief Russell Jeter (Parnell), who leads the ship’s enlisted men and woman as they struggle to find  a cure for a deadly virus that is decimating earth’s population.

“In this world, 100 people die every day. So we’ve got this ticking clock occurring in the show.” said Dane. “It’s apocalypse now. It’s still unfolding.”

The show has a very close working relationship with the US Navy, including shooting the majority of shipboard scenes on actual in-use Navy vessels. In order to work with the Navy’s schedule, show creators had to write the entire first season so that almost all shipboard scenes could be shot during a tight three-week window provided by the Navy.

“It was a little insane. We had no idea what we were doing, or where it fell into the season as a whole sometimes.” said Baldwin with a laugh. “We’d go from episode 3, scene 4, to episode 9, scene 8. It could get a little confusing. But being able to work on the actual ship, was incredible.”

In addition to shooting on Navy ships, the show has US Navy advisers both in the writer’s room and on set, and a number of the extras in the show are actual Navy personnel. To thank the Navy for all of their support, the cast and crew flew out to Washington D.C. for a special premiere of the pilot for the US Navy early this summer.

“Some times, they had a completely different reaction then non-military audiences.” said Van Winkle. “In the scene where I kiss Kara, most audiences were like, ‘whatever,’ but the Navy guys just blew up. ‘Cause they knew what a big deal it was.”

Kane elaborated: “I think the best moment I had so far was when we were in Washington D.C., and young Navy woman came over to me, and thanked me–and the show–for the moment with Christina’s character, [LTJG Granderson], for showing a same-sex relationship in the Navy with such honesty, and for having that in the show.”

(l-r) Travis Van Winkle, Adam Baldwin, Eric Dane and Christina Elmore on TNT’s “The Last Ship.”

As for what fans can expect in the rest of season one and going into season two?

“Slattery and Chandler definitely are going to continue to have some issues.” said Baldwin. “It’s the nature of the situation and the XO and CO relationship.”

“I think fans are going to be absolutely shocked by how season one ends.” said Steinberg. “Season two is going to build but also take us in some different directions.”

“Episode nine is the big musical episode.” said Van Winkle.

Unfortunately we couldn’t get anyone else to confirm this.

Watch the Comic Con exclusive trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments!

Briefly: This movie’s going to make a ton of money… But I don’t think it’ll be getting any of mine.

A new trailer for the Michael Bay produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has just hit the web, and it fills me with even more dread than the first trailer did. It’s got a little of everything that many of these 80’s reboots tend to offer, including bad  performances, underwhelming CGI, who-the-hell-approved this character redesigns, and way too much dubstep.

After hating on Days of Future Past‘s Quicksilver, who then went on to steal the film, I try to reserve judgement on these projects until I actually see them, but that’s really hard to do this time. It just looks awful.

In any case, you’ve been warned. Take a look at the trailer below if you dare, and let us know what you think. Shrek 5 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hits theatres on August 8th.

I am not exactly sure why but I am particularly fond of post-apocalyptic stories. Maybe it is the uncertain future or all the strange possibilities after a disaster? Well, I was excited to learn that TNT has a new drama show coming out Sunday June 22nd at 9/8c that is not quite post-apocalyptic, but rather, it is apocalyptic. The Last Ship is a show where the disaster is currently happening!

When a global pandemic wipes out eighty percent of the planet’s population, the crew of a lone naval destroyer must find a way to pull humanity from the brink of extinction.

Executive Producer Michael Bay presents The Last Ship, starring Eric Dane, Rhona Mitra and Adam Baldwin.

At WonderCon 2014, during The Last Ship panel, Executive Producer Hank Steinberg talked about the inspiration for the show saying, “The story was brought to us by TNT” and it is based on an 80s book where the Cold War was the “disaster.” The draw was that it is a story about “people alive at sea…alone” (Steinberg). The producers wanted to explore the existential and emotional journey and see how the captain would keep the crew together. To update the show, producers/creators considered global thermal nuclear war because some people could survive that, but they opted for a global pandemic since it is much more realistic and “they can solve it” (Steinberg). Steinberg compared The Last Ship to Star Trek by stating, “we have a ticking clock with a sense of urgency and if they can solve this, they can get back to their families and save them.”

THE LAST SHIP

Having a ship as the setting, “opens up the possibility to go anywhere” explained Executive Producer Steven Kane. He went on to say that the “missions of the first season are based on the needs of the scientists.” Also, there will be a lot of moving around within the ship.

lastship2

The actors at the Q&A, Charles Parnell (Commander Master Chief) and Travis Van Winkle (Lt. Danny Green), mentioned how they both trained with the military. Parnell even read up on the origins of the navy during his own research. Van Winkle trained with Navy Seals and felt that it was “inspiring to hear their stories,” and that it was a blessing to work with them.

lastship3

So what makes this an intriguing show? It is a sci-fi in a very pure sense because the science is actually based in reality. The show is philosophical and looks at what it means to be human/civilized. Every day that they are not back with the vaccine, more people die; they really are the last hope. The Executive Producers also said it will have different types of heroes than we have seen before. Sounds good to me! Make sure to check out The Last Ship Sunday June 22nd!

Briefly: A slighty different Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trailer has just hit the web. It still has a severe lack of both pizza and cowabuna’s, but this time around, it shows off all four turtles (and gives us a quick glimpse at William Fichner’s Shredder).

Take a look at the new trailer, and let us know if you’re still severely disappointed in the way that the turtles look. Admit it, when he takes that mast off, he kind of looks like Shrek… a lot.

Also, someone took it upon themselves to improve the look of the turtles. Here’s what could have been:

In any case, here’s that trailer. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hits theatres on August 8th.

Briefly: Following the film’s first trailer from just a couple of weeks back, IGN has just debuted the first TV spot for Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The spot clocks in at just 30 seconds long, but it gives us our first look at Splinter (from the back, anyways), and we can also see what looks to be William Fichtner’s Shredder standing in the background.

In any case, take a look at the spot below, and let us know what you think. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hits theatres on August 8th.

Briefly: The first trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles dropped a couple of weeks back to (understandably) mixed reception. Today, Paramount debuted four new teaser posters for the August release, focussing on their weapons and colours rather than their… lips.

I usually try to reserve judgement until I can see the full feature, but I’m finding that just a little tough this time around. Take a look at the trailer below, and see if you can see what I mean.

The trailer has a severe lack of both pizza and cowabunga’s, doesn’t it (though yes, I know that the original comics did too)?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stars Megan Fox, Alan Ritchson, William Fichtner, Will Arnett, Whoopie Goldberg, and plenty of others, and hits theatres on August 8th.

Briefly: Following yesterday’s Wahlberg-centric character poster, Paramount has debuted two new character posters AND the full trailer for Transformers: Age of Extinction.

As much as I’ve hated on the Transformers series over the years, there are definitely some cool moments to this trailer. The main character being an adult with a family to protect is an interesting deviation from Shia Labeouf, and the much more classically styled Optimus Prime is a welcome change. The Dinobots still looks stupid, but… well, baby steps, right?

You can take a look at the full trailer for Transformers: Age of Extinction, plus two character posters below, and be sure to let us know if you’re looking forward to the film, and what you’re most looking forward to seeing in the full feature.

Briefly: We haven’t seen much from the Transformers: Age of Extinction camp since the first teaser debuted back at the Super Bowl (which also gave us our first look at the Dinobots). Today, Paramount Pictures debuted the first character poster for the film, which naturally features Mark Wahlberg’s Cade Yeager (yep, that’s his name) holding some sort of alien weapon.

You can take a look at the poster below, and be sure to let us know if you’re looking forward to the film! Transformers: Age of Extinction hits theatres on June 27th, 2014.

Yep… I think that most people either really love or really hate the Transformers franchise (you should know by now that I’m in the latter… I haven’t even seen Revenge of the Fallen or Dark of the Moon), but in either case, be sure to let us know what you think of the footage!

As SJ noted earlier todayTransformers: Age of Extinction is slated for a June 27, 2014 release and stars Jack Raynor, Nicola Peltz and Mark Wahlberg, with Peter Cullen reprising his role as the voice of Optimus Prime. Kelsey Grammer recently joined the cast as the villain Harold Attinger, and Glenn Morshower is returning to the role of General Morshower.

Transformers: Age of Extinction released new pictures of on-set action; cranking up the already frantic levels of excitement around the much-anticipated Super Bowl ad.
