With the worldwide phenomena of the #MeToo movement engrossing every walk of life, Hollywood was no exception to the unmasking of workplace sexual harassment claims. One unexpected casualty of the movement was Kevin Spacey, a veteran actor with a stunning resume, who faces multiple accusations of unwanted sexual advances. Consequently, director Ridley Scott felt compelled to do the unthinkable with his new film All the Money in the World. A mere six weeks before its official release, Scott recast Academy Award Winner Christopher Plummer in Spacey’s role and re-shot 22 scenes in 9 days with the committed aide of his cast and crew members. But how much of an effect would all of these 11th-hour changes have on the overall quality of the film? Truth be told, these last-minute edits are the least of the movie’s issues.

All the Money tells the unbelievable true story of oilman John Paul Getty (Plummer), the world’s richest man, who refuses to pony up a $17 million cash-ransom demanded by the kidnappers of his 16 year-old grandson Paul (Charlie Plummer, no relation) in 1973 Italy. But when Paul’s mother, Gail (Michelle Williams), pleas desperately for Getty’s assistance, he enlists the services of personal advisor and ex-CIA agent Fletcher Chase (Mark Wahlberg) to take care of matters “as quickly and inexpensively as possible”. Pressed for time as Paul’s abductors make it clear that they aren’t afraid to kill the teen if necessary, Gail and Chase try to scheme a way to cut a deal.

There’s a more interesting story embedded somewhere within this broadly told screenplay from David Scarpa. But instead, All the Money muddles its focus and emerges as a thinly-elaborated and thrill-less bout of factual exhaustion. Widely outstretched to nearly 135 minutes of uninspiring and occasionally agonizing narrative, Michelle Williams and Christopher Plummer deliver effort-saving performances that are but twinkles of starlight in a dark and empty void of crumbling deficiencies. The film’s two most-prominent characters, Gail and Getty, become lost in a sea of meaningless subplots. The lengthy amount of attention given to the kidnappers and their prisoner, Paul, lacks the required tension needed to justify its overwhelming inclusion. Moreover, Mark Wahlberg is so noticeably miscast that it’s difficult to tell whether his designed character arc is poorly scripted, terribly acted, or a disastrous combination of both. Either way, this bitter and cold real-life story lacks a genuine purpose. It fails as a suspenseful thriller, it underwhelms as a cheaply-explored character study, and it by no means engages the viewer emotionally. You will find some brilliant examples of skilled acting and a few strong moments of direction sprinkled throughout the film, yet there’s very little else to be found inside of Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World.

Briefly: It’s been a long (long) time coming, and now we know just when the Mark Wahlberg starring how-the-heck-is-this-happening Six Billion Dollar Man will be hitting theatres.

Naturally, it’s still a ways away, and as it’s not set to start principal photography until next September, the film will release on December 22, 2017.

The film will be written and directed by Oscar-nominated Damián Szifron (Wild Tales), while Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Bob Weinstein will produce.

The Six Billion Dollar Man is based on the classic television series “The Six Million Dollar Man” and the novel “Cyborg” by Martin Caidin. The story follows military officer, Steve Austin, who becomes part of a top secret government program after a horrific accident leaves him near death. With the help of cutting edge technology, Steve is brought back to life with extraordinary abilities, making him the world’s first truly bionic man.

Wahlberg said that “I’m thrilled to assemble ‘The Six Billion Dollar Man’ for the big screen with the likes of Bob Weinstein and Damián Szifron. We look forward to creating a Steve Austin for the 21st century.”

Szifron adds that “Writing the screenplay was such a fantastic ride and embarking on this journey with Mark, Bob and Stephen to take this story to a whole new level is simply spectacular. Growing up, these kind of films left an indelible mark on me and now it feels so good to be making one.”

I just hope that he fights Bigfoot.

In any case, how do you feel about Wahlberg as Steve Austin? How about the change to The Six Billion Dollar Man? Six million just doesn’t seem like a lot these days, does it?

Animation guru, Seth MacFarlane, proved once and for all with his 2012 comedy hit, Ted, that he was capable of transitioning to a big screen director. And while his sophomore effort, A Million Ways to Die in the West, was an absolute disappointment, MacFarland attempts to get back to his comfort zone with the highly anticipated sequel, Ted 2. Regrettably, though, MacFarlane will have to continue trying to top his original work.

A few years have passed and John (Mark Wahlberg) has divorced while Ted’s ties the knot with his grocery store check-out co-worker, Tami-Lynn (Jessica Barth). With a shaky marriage brewing between the Teddy bear and his foul-mouthed wife, they decide that having a child is the only way to reconcile. However, in order to adopt a child (due to Tami-Lynn’s drug-destroyed ovaries), Ted must prove that he’s a person in a court of law. So they enlist the help of a novice trial lawyer named Samantha Jackson (Amanda Seyfried) and take on the almighty powers that be.

Ted1

Ted 2‘s brightest moments occur when Seth MacFarlane sticks to his mantra of one-liners and merciless zingers regarding pop culture icons. The writer-director is massively effective when it comes to constructing these kinds of jokes. However, MacFarlane struggles to develop a cohesive and sensible story to help put his comedic prowess on display. He completely misses by continuing his blind loyalty to actor Giovanni Ribisi. After Ribisi’s character nearly spoiled the franchise’s first installment, there is absolutely no need to revive “Donny” in this sequel. While the blame deserves to land solely on MacFarlane’s shoulders, as Ribisi has proven that he’s a capable actor, Ted 2 suffers from an unforgivable second act that’s plagued by unnecessary subplots and an over-extended script that pushes the comedy far past its desirable limits.

Ted2

The third feature from Seth MacFarlane isn’t all doom and gloom, however. Just like the original, Mark Wahlberg gives a fully committed performance once again and demonstrates his natural ability for eliciting laughs. Yet, despite Wahlberg’s fine work in the film, trading Mila Kunis for Amanda Seyfriend is ultimately a bit of a loss. While Seyfriend is merely serviceable, Ted 2 uses a long list of cameos from Liam Neeson, Jay Leno and Tom Brady to keep the jokes fresh. But in the end, all of these shining bright spots become inevitably overshadowed by a flimsy story that provides a brittle foundation for the comedy.

Of course Ted 2 will make you laugh, much like anything MacFarlane has his hand in. Nevertheless, you’re honestly better off revisiting the first film or soaking in some classic Family Guy episodes. This latest effort from Seth MacFarlane is by no means a complete bombshell, but it’s definitely a long-winded affair that offers very little more than a solid barrage of first-half laughs and a steady stream of second-half yawns.

Many aspects of life operate in cycles and Hollywood is no exception. The latest Tinseltown remake comes from Rise of the Planet of the Apes director, Rupert Wyatt, who teams up with Mark Wahlberg in the slightly re-imagined version of 1974’s The Gambler. When Paramount originally announced the remake in the summer of 2011, it was believed that visionary Martin Scorcese and his loyal leading star, Leonardo DiCaprio, were in line take on the project. But after viewing Wyatt’s unnecessary adaptation, I’m left to ponder what could have been.

Jim Bennett (Wahlberg) is a high stakes gambler who falls further and further into debt in an underground casino ring with his risky and careless betting habits. But after the self-destructive English professor borrows from a second loan shark and offers his life as collateral, his addiction continues to place him on a very dangerous path. And in Jim’s mind, his only way out of this mess is to go all-in one final time.

gambler1

For a brief moment before the film had ever been screened, some insiders gave The Gambler an outside chance at making an awards season splash. However, Rupert Wyatt’s effort is far from Oscar contention. Boasting a constrained and soulless script that’s drowned in timely cynicism and betting cliches, you can only watch a blackjack dealer flip over cards for so long before you start tuning out, and that limit is reached very early on. Simply put, The Gambler would rather show its protagonist losing than have the audience experience the feeling through a clever and well-crafted character-driven screenplay. As for the film’s leading star, Wahlberg’s performance is by no means a burden to the overall product, but he isn’t a bright spot either. Unlike the 1974 original where James Caan delivers a character that viewers can connect with, it’s difficult to tell whether Jim Bennett’s lack of allure is a product of Wahlberg’s acting, or the result of poor writing and development on the part of Academy Award winning screenwriter William Monahan. Odds are, it’s a combination of both.

gambler2

Thankfully, though, The Gambler offers a saving grace with its long list of exceptional supporting roles from John Goodman, Brie Larson and Jessica Lange. Each do their part to successfully transition Bennett’s collapse from scene to scene, and some of the film’s finest moments occur when John Goodman takes command of the screen. In fact, the movie would have been much better served opening the door a little wider for these vastly under-utilized characters. Brie Larson is such an emerging talent in Hollywood and, unfortunately, she isn’t given the proper platform to work with in the film.

No matter how hard Rupert and his team attempt to offer a slick and cool tale of underground gambling, the final product fails to resonate. The Gambler‘s biggest detractor is an unlikable protagonist who becomes impossible to connect with for a multitude of reasons. For example, if you’re trying to sell a story about an unlikely gambling addict, you should make the character significantly more endearing and vulnerable. Instead, all we’re given are Wahlberg’s frequent “woe-is-me” rants followed by a careless and unforgiving attitude that repels the audience almost immediately. There’s no rooting interest here, so I suggest spending your time elsewhere.

Briefly: Following yesterday’s Wahlberg-centric character poster, Paramount has debuted two new character posters AND the full trailer for Transformers: Age of Extinction.

As much as I’ve hated on the Transformers series over the years, there are definitely some cool moments to this trailer. The main character being an adult with a family to protect is an interesting deviation from Shia Labeouf, and the much more classically styled Optimus Prime is a welcome change. The Dinobots still looks stupid, but… well, baby steps, right?

You can take a look at the full trailer for Transformers: Age of Extinction, plus two character posters below, and be sure to let us know if you’re looking forward to the film, and what you’re most looking forward to seeing in the full feature.

Briefly: We haven’t seen much from the Transformers: Age of Extinction camp since the first teaser debuted back at the Super Bowl (which also gave us our first look at the Dinobots). Today, Paramount Pictures debuted the first character poster for the film, which naturally features Mark Wahlberg’s Cade Yeager (yep, that’s his name) holding some sort of alien weapon.

Can’t wait for the Super Bowl ad? Don’t care? Tell us in the comments!

Imagine this … you’re walking down a dark and desolate road when you’re approached by a stranger wielding a gun. How would you feel? Scared? Uncomfortable? Just the sight of such a deadly weapon would make almost anyone feel these types of emotions. Now, imagine the amount of fear our brave young soldiers must feel on a daily basis serving overseas in dangerous countries like Afghanistan, fighting against armed militants who don’t abide by the typical rules of war. Peter Berg’s Lone Survivor is for them. The strong men and women who protect our right to kiss our family goodnight and sleep safely in our beds. Perhaps no film has ever made me feel as proud and thankful for each and every member of our armed services. You are all heroes.

Lone Survivor tells the remarkable true story of a botched 2005 mission where four brave members of SEAL Team 10 found themselves under siege by an army of Taliban soldiers. Thankfully, someone lived to recount their harrowing tale of heroism and brotherhood. One that cuts right through the skin and penetrates straight to the center of your heart, where it belongs.

Lone Survivor 1

This isn’t Peter Berg’s first go-around with a middle east centered war film. The director already has 2007’s solid effort, The Kingdom, nestled away in his back pocket. However, his newest release, Lone Survivor, reaches insurmountable heights with an inarguably strong showing from its action-loving director and a relentless true story that goes far beyond anything you’d ever imagine. In a packed afternoon showing you couldn’t even hear the person next to you breathing, because chances are they weren’t. The feature’s intensity is numbing, almost paralytic. You don’t just watch these four soldiers combat against an army of dedicated religious fanatics, you experience it. Berg puts you in the center of the action, so much so that you feel every cut and you suffer with every gunshot wound. It’s mesmerizing and something you can only understand by witnessing first-hand.

Lone Survivor 2

Another impressive quality to the film is how expansive the story actually becomes. The most interesting facets of this real-life account exceed beyond what you’ll find in any trailer. There are moments of compassion and sympathy that play out in such a beautiful and earnest sequence. In addition to an exquisite story, Lone Survivor benefits from gutsy and respectful performances from all of its four main stars, Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Taylor Kitsch and Emile Hirsch. Without question, there’s pressure to taking on roles that hold as much important as these ones do. The entire cast does a dignified job of bringing them to life, and perhaps no one is better than the regularly overlooked Ben Foster. He’s just marvelous, and I’ll leave it at that. There’s plenty to appreciate across the board, making Lone Survivor my new top film of 2013.

Okay, I’ll finally stop with the outpouring of love and quickly address one of the few shortcomings surrounding the feature. For example, its title … completely unnecessary! My guess is most people are unaware of the story’s details going into a viewing, so why give away the ending right off the bat? There are some moments in the third act where Berg attempts to build some tension and anxiety, but they’re weakened by a predisposed knowledge garnered from the film’s title. Yet, we can easily look past this error in judgment and its effects on the progression of the movie to appreciate Lone Survivor for what it truly is, one of the most gripping and worthwhile true stories you’ll ever encounter.

The film, based on the book Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10 tells the story of a failed 2005 mission, where the team was set to capture and kill a prominent member of the Taliban.

Briefly: We’ve already seen Bumblebee’s new look for Transformers 4, but Michael Bay’s latest preview would suggest that the character may be getting an overhaul at some point in the film.

No character info has been released about the latest vehicle, but the description that accompanies the photo states that “The adventure continues to transform with a very different offering from Daimler Trucks North America . . . the imposing 2014 Argosy cab-over truck by Freightliner.”

This one certainly looks like it could be a Decepticon: being that this rig features a very contrasted look from that of Optimus Prime, could the classic baddie Motormaster be appearing in Transformers 4? Bay seems eager to reveal all of the new vehicles, but hasn’t yet shared just who is actually in the movie. That has to be frustrating for fans.

I remember July 2nd, 2007 like it was yesterday. A beyond-excited 17 year old me drove over almost two hours to the nearest movie theatre and waited in line all afternoon to finally get a chance to see Michael Bay’s Transformers on opening day.

I barely remember the movie all these years later, but I do remember the disappointment. I remember the dozens of times during the feature when I simply thought to myself, “what the hell am I watching?”, or “they did not just do that”. I remember wondering to myself if I should simply leave, but convincing myself instead to stay because “it has to get better”.

It didn’t. I hated it in its entirety. I still haven’t seen Revenge of the Fallen or Dark of the Moon, and I have no plans to see Transformers 4. It’ll make millions, and folks will love it, and I respect that, but it’s simply not for me.

For those of you as infatuated with Transformers as I was back in the day, three images from the production of Transformers 4 have been revealed. Two new Autobots in their vehicular forms have been shown off, as well as a redesigned Optimus Prime.

Take a look at the images below, and let us know if you’re excited! Transformers 4 hits theatres on June 27th, 2014.

A new Red-Band trailer has been released for director Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain starring Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie. The upcoming dark comedy, which is based on a true story, definitely looks like it’s going to be a fun time at the movies.

From acclaimed director Michael Bay comes “Pain & Gain,” a new action comedy starring Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie. Based on the unbelievable true story of three personal trainers in 1990s Miami who, in pursuit of the American Dream, get caught up in a criminal enterprise that goes horribly wrong. Ed Harris, Tony Shalhoub, Rob Corddry, Rebel Wilson and Bar Paly also star. The film is based on magazine articles by Pete Collins, with a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely and produced by Donald DeLine, Michael Bay and Ian Bryce.

Not too long ago it was rumored that actress Nicola Peltz (The Last Airbender, Bates Motel) would play the female lead in the upcoming fourth installment in the Transformers franchise. However, there was no official confirmation regarding the news and we haven’t heard anything since then. Well, that was until today. When asked if Megan Fox would be returning as the female lead in the film on Twitter, director Michael Bay responded:

Peltz will join Mark Wahlberg and Jack Reynor in the upcoming film. Reynor and Peltz will play a high school-aged couple. He is a race car driver and she is the daughter of Mark Wahlberg, who will be the lead in this start of a new trilogy.

Yes, you read that right. Ted, the loveable, vulgar teddy bear from one of last year’s most surprising comedies (which went on to become the highest R-rated comedy of all time) will be presenting at next month’s Academy Awards!

This should be pretty interesting to watch. Was Ted not CG for most of the movie? How will he be animated on stage!?

The Academy also stated “we won’t deny that Ted used his pull with our host to get himself the booking.” This year’s host, of course, being Seth Macfarlane, creator of Family Guy, and writer/director on Ted.

Will you be tuning in to the ceremony? The 85th Annual Academy Awards will broadcast live on February 24th.

A short while ago it was rumored that young Irish actor Jack Reynor (What Richard Did) had been offered a lead role in the upcoming fourth Transformers film to star alongside Mark Wahlberg. Michael Bay has now taken to his official website and confirmed that Reynor has been cast in the film, calling him “the real deal”. Bay also confirms that the film, which will be quite different than the last few, will the be the first of a brand new trilogy.

I just hired a great new actor for Transformers 4 to star against Mark Wahlberg. Jack Reynor, he is an Irish kid that came to America with 30 bucks in his pocket. Pretty ballsy. Transformers 4 is not a reboot. That word has been floating around on the net.

This movie takes place exactly 4 years after the war in Chicago. The story makes a very natural transition, and reason as to why we have a whole new cast. This Transformers will feel very different then the last three. We are embarking on a new trilogy.
