Briefly: Take-Two Interactive’s comic book subsidiary, Double Take, may have just launched their Night of the Living Dead tie-in books back in September (yep, like one month ago), but that hasn’t stopped Lionsgate from announcing the adaptation of one of what may be the best book of the bunch, Z-Men.

“We’re delighted to expand our relationship with our friends at Take-Two by partnering with their comic book arm, Double Take, in bringing Z-Men to the big screen,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger. “We continue to diversify our portfolio with films adapted from novels, video games and board games and look forward to translating 2T’s graphic novel into a spine-chilling film for moviegoers and comic book fans alike. It is yet another example of the strong underlying intellectual property on which our film and television content is based.”

Here’s the synopsis of the cool-as-hell book, in case you’ve missed it thus far: “Dead and/or alive… LBJ orders the Secret Service to bring him back a zombie. It’s 1966 and the Oval Office is in an uproar; there’s been a spree of mass murders in Western Pennsylvania (and reports of the dead returning to life). President Lyndon B. Johnson assigns the head of the Secret Service to send agents into the field to investigate. Agents Stuart and Clancy are given the opportunity to serve their country and see if the zombie apocalypse has indeed begun.”

“We are pleased to expand our partnership with Lionsgate, who has the right team to bring to life on screen what Double Take brings to life in comics,” said Double Take General Manager Bill Jemas. “We look forward to seeing Lionsgate’s creativity transform the Z-Menstory into an exciting feature film, and everyone on the Double Take team is incredibly enthused at this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

No further information about the project has been revealed at this time, but we’ll be sure to keep you informed as we find out more!

The Arcs is hell.

No, it’s not a bad book (quite the opposite, actually). Writer/Creator Michael D. Poisson has simply crafted a tale so haunting and emotional that you’ll be praying for a shed of hope on each and every one of its 80 pages.

If you’re not interested in reading the buttload of praise that I’m about to give this book, here’s a TL:DR – The Arcs is among the most original graphic novels I’ve experienced in recent memory, and is a tale that stuck with me for eons after I’d finished reading. At the book’s conclusion, you’ll simply be begging for more, and I sure as hell hope that Poisson and his team have a sequel planned for this one (and more than one at that).

Preview1

Yep, The Arcs is fantastic.

I first heard of the title back when its release date was announced this past Summer, and was immediately intrigued by its simple, yet profound plot. The book tells the story of the seven Archangels (the Arcs, duh), who are charged with protecting the Earth after God completely disappears. The angels wage a never-ending war with the armies of Hell, who (of course) want Earth and its inhabitants for themselves. The Arcs open as the angel army is in dire straights: Hell’s army grows more and more powerful, while angels are being torn apart left and right or worse: losing their faith and joining the ranks of the demons. It’s a very original twist on the age-old Heaven vs. Hell storyline, and one with a myriad of clever twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. I absolutely loved the fact that not even the angels knew where God had gone (or when, if at all, he would return), and had to instead rely on blind faith that there was a purpose to their father’s actions.

The story isn’t as black-and-white as it initially sounds (I definitely don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll stop there), but interestingly enough, the art is. That’s right: beneath Matt Jacob’s gorgeous cover (wonderfully coloured by Carlos Badilla), lies an entirely monochrome book, and I think that The Arcs is all the better for it. Sure, colours can be drab and disheartening, but nothing can give off a feeling of hopelessness as strongly as a completely colourless page. Jacob’s has done some incredible work here, elegantly displaying the invisible war between worlds (with humanity caught in the middle), and intelligently using light, darkness, and shadow to add all sorts of emotion to each and every scene. An incredible amount of detail is packed into each page of The Arcs, a feat that could only have been infinitely more challenging without the use of colour. I often found myself studying pages for an extended period of time, simply revelling in the stark contrast of parties present in each hellish battle.

TheArcs2

The only problem that I had with The Arcs (and what a problem to have), is that it was over all too quickly. The book feels like a phenomenal introduction to a much larger series (and a tale that could go on for a very long time), and at its conclusion, all that I wanted was more (and more, and more). There’s still a ton of tale to tell here, and I certainly hope that Michael D. Poisson and his team, and Fanboy Comics, have a chance to continue it.

The Arcs scores a clear 5/5. You can check out a preview of the book here, and pick up your very own copy here! Already read it? Be sure to let us know what you though! Again, this one is definitely worth the price of admission.

With all of the Transformers graphic novels being released these days, it’s hard even for a HUGE Transformers fan like myself to get excited for new books. But when I realized Transformers: Monstrosity Volume 1 was one of the new motion books from Madefire, I have to say that I was curious.

The storyline was great. It included some old favorites, such as the Dinobots, who seem to have broken faction from the Autobots and are working on their own. The timeline is just after a great war which the Autobots have won. Megatron is dead (or as dead as can be expected…of course we all know Megatron NEVER dies) and Optimus is struggling with one part of leadership he is not prepared for: politics. As the Dinobots try to find black market goods to sell so they can leave Cybertron, Optimus meets with other leaders trying to win them over while a small group of Decepticons, including Scorponok and Starscream, are in hiding and disposing of an almost-dead Megatron on Junkion.

Not from the motion comic (duh)
Not from the motion comic (duh)

Yes, fans of the original Transformers probably are at least a little excited by all of those names/places, but what really drew me in was the fact that this was my first motion book. Maybe everyone out there is reading them besides me already, I have no idea, but wow did they add to the enjoyment. The combination of images moving along with sound effects (like truck engines and explosions) were so cool. The artwork is amazing as well.

The gimmick of moving graphic novels pulled me into a storyline that was decent enough. I would like to hear the dialogue read along with everything else, but then I guess it becomes a cartoon. The graphics were awesome though.

Overall, I found the experience enjoyable and highly recommend this book to anyone who already loves Transformers. 4/5 Stars.

Sound off: Have you read a motion comic? What do you think? We’d love to hear from you!

Heading into Anime Expo 2013, I expected the usual out of the popular con. You know, the anime, the announcements, the Cosplay… But amongst the sea of con flu and body odor, the last thing I expected to see was a legendary wrestler like Ultimo Dragon. Luckily for fans like me, he didn’t show up empty handed.

A collaboration between Ultimo, former film writer and WWE creative member Dan Madigan, and Musetap Art Studios, a graphic novel staring the pro wrestling icon was announced to be in the works. This 100 + page graphic novel will bring the story of Ultimo’s legendary mask to life, as its history is traced across hundreds of years, all of which promise to bring the action, excitement and innovation that Ultimo has shown in the ring for over two decades.

Below is a synopsis from the official Kickstarter page:

“It is said that a great warrior chieftain is the one that created the code for which the wearer of the mask should live by…that with knowledge, courage and strength comes with a great price…for centuries…the mask has found itself being handed down from tribe to tribe…then from clan to clan…never owned by one people…but always used by those that needed it…that needed its courage and wisdom…and strength that lie within it….there may come a day in the time of our people that one of you may have to wear this mask…it is a great undertaking…for one may wear the mask on the outside…but the mask owns you on the inside…I hope that day…never comes.”

As an attempt to make Ultimo more well known to American audiences, the project seems to have so much potential right out of the gate. For more information on the writers, artists, funding the project or on the book itself, check out the Kickstarter page. Until then, watch the teaser trailer and let us know if Ultimo Dragon will earn a spot on your bookshelf when the project is released.

Now playing on Machinima Prime is a new series from a surprising star/writer, Orlando Jones. It turns out that he’s a comic book aficionado and absolutely loves graphic novels.  His new series, Tainted Love is an interesting mix of media, combining live action with a graphic novel. The story however, is not for the kiddies: the plot is urban, contemporary, and if it was rated it would certainly be an “R”.

Orlando Jones stars as Barry, a criminal suffering from “Tainted Love.” He’s a hustler who has a way of making ends meet, but when he hooks up with lady love, ‘Jezebel’, played by Deanna Russo (Being Human, Burning Love), things start to go crazy, including a non-so-planned pregnancy.

Notorious good actor who plays bad guys, Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight, The Expendables), brings his own brand of tough guy to the production as well. He plays a crime boss not unlike the one he played as Marconi in Nolan’s Batman. In addition, Maz Jobrani (Axis of Evil Comedy Tour) and Jim Jefferies (Legit) bring comedic touches to the show.

In an exclusive interview I spoke with Orlando about this hilarious, laugh out loud series.

Allie Hanley: Tell me about your new series ‘Tainted Love’, that you wrote and also star in.

Orlando Jones: It is an action comedy, graphic novel, at least that’s how I describe it anyway. The ideology is really just based on that we all love things that we are not supposed to, and as amazing as love is, it is often tainted.

I really like that idea and I really thought telling the story about characters that people think have no dignity and therefore, people treating them as if they have no humanity. Just an idea that I was interested in exploring.

Barry and Jezebel are two criminals having a kid, which felt to me like “Tainted Love.”  They love the criminal parts of their lives, and at the same time they are having a kid which just seemed like crazy making to me.

AH: So your show is part live action, part graphic novel; Whose idea was that, and how hard was that to incorporate into live action story?

OJ: I think there were a lot of challenges to figure out. It was definitely an idea that I had and the simple idea was that if you were to create Batman or Iron Man, or whatever the comic book is, you  wouldn’t do it the same way you would do it in the 50’s or the 60’s, even the 70’s for that matter, where in you would draw this and then launch it in the print business. I mean every week we hear about the dying print business and how everything is moving to digital so I thought in 2013 if I was to launch a graphic novel into the space, I thought where would I do that and how would I do that? It meant that it had to be live action and how would that come to life? It also meant that you had to go where that audience is, and that would be Machinima. At the time I didn’t know anyone really at Machinima. At the time I didn’t think I was going to walk in and pitch them a live action graphic novel and have them go great, let me write you a check. So I felt the burden was really on me if I wanted to tell that story, and try to figure out how to do it with my partners.

Ultimately what you are looking at is pretty much collaboration with those individuals. It’s been an exciting ride. Incorporation of art created a whole other set of different issues because it needed to feel that the graphic novel was the basis of it, and that it was in fact, coming alive.

It meant first deciding what your art was going to look like; and then secondly the art needed to be original and fresh. Thirdly that the visual effects elements were there to make it come alive, and lastly that the narrative felt organic.

A lot of that was trial and error, and a lot of that was planning. Frankly we were just fortunate that it all came together, happy that it all came together. It certainly affects the way we told the story, because the rules are different on Machinima than they are on a traditional expense.

AH: Your series rolls at a fast pace, and is definitely for adults. Your co-star Deanna Russo has a lot of screen time with you, and a lot of skin to skin action as well. Tell me about that, and if you guys were friends before that…. And just for fun, can you do it in an Alabama accent since I know that’s your home state?

OJ <in a crazy Southern Accent>: Well I remember seeing her a couple times on the television… and she’s hot to trot. So I asked her if she would come on over and meet with me. And she came on down there, and she had the right spirit and the right attitude and I didn’t want her to be some side-arm, ya know what I mean? So she’s a comic book nerd herself -ya know? And I wanted her not to be the way so many other women are portrayed on television – ya know? What I mean, not another girlfriend or just a pair a boobs. I told her she was driving this, and I am going to be following you. Then she looked at me like I was crazy; and then she thought I was bullshittin’ but I wasn’t. And that there is the way it came together.

AH: Thanks for cracking us up with that funny accent! You’re the best! So in episode 2 we get a look at “Fred Lucus” played by Eric Roberts in a role that looks similar to the one he played in the Christopher Nolan Batman movies, will we be seeing a lot of him in the 6 episodes?

OJ: You will see pieces of him, they are definitely there. In this story I wanted to spend most of my time with the two lead characters. Eric is hysterical and amazing in it. But I think he represents an image (for me), the type of bad guy that’s very funny. His interest in violence is really secondary to his interest in his brand of playing the bad ass. For me, he does things for his brand and he doesn’t really do things that are personal. So “Barry” creates a scenario where he invokes him in personal way. I don’t want to spoil it.

We’ve been fortunate to take this to the big screen and you will get to see more of that character as it plays out. Because there is a definitely an idea of how a bad guy is suppose to be, not just a pretend bad guy.

AH: He’s got the look, that’s for sure.

OJ: Ha ha, yes he does.

Looking for more from Orlando Jones? He’ll be joining Jonathan on Thurday’s episode of Geekscape! Check it out at 6PM PST on the Toadhop Network! Watch chapter one of Tainted Love below, and let us know what you think!

Check out the first trailer for the upcoming adaptation of Seven Grant’s graphic novel 2 Guns. The action film, directed by Baltasar Kormakur, stars Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington as two undercover operatives from competing bureas. However, the two don’t realize each other are undercover and…well, just check out the trailer below.

Academy Award® winner Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg lead an all-star cast in 2 Guns, an explosive action film that tracks two operatives from competing bureaus who are forced on the run together. But there is a big problem with their unique alliance: Neither knows that the other is an undercover federal agent.

For the past 12 months, DEA agent Bobby Trench (Washington) and U.S. naval intelligence officer Marcus Stigman (Wahlberg) have been reluctantly attached at the hip. Working undercover as members of a narcotics syndicate, each man distrusts his partner as much as the criminals they have both been tasked to take down. When their attempt to infiltrate a Mexican drug cartel and recover millions goes haywire, Trench and Stigman are suddenly disavowed by their superiors. Now that everyone wants them in jail or in the ground, the only person they can count on is the other. Unfortunately for their pursuers, when good guys spend years pretending to be bad, they pick up a few tricks along the way.

2 Guns hits theaters August 2, 2013

A second domestic trailer has been released online for Walter Hill’s upcoming action-thriller Bullet To The Head. The film, which stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Momoa, Christian Slater, Sarah Shahi, and Sung Kang, is based on the graphic novel of the same name. Bullet To The Head tells the story of a New Orleans hitman and a New York City cop who form an alliance to bring down the killers of their respective partners. This is Walter Hill’s first directorial effort in 11 years and it definitely looks like a fun and action-packed flick.

Bullet To The Head hits theaters February 1st, 2013.

Fox has picked up the rights to Athena, a drama based on the graphic novel Headache by writer Lisa Joy (Pushing Daisies), with plans to develop it as an hour long drama for the small screen. The graphic novel is described as:

This gripping coming-of-age tale of an 18-year-old girl who happens to be Athena. In Athena’s life, there’s no such thing as hyperbole. Her “evil” stepmother? Hera, who’s actually evil and out to kill her. The bad boy she falls in love with? Hades, king of the underworld. The philandering father whose approval she always seeks and fails to attain? Zeus the ultimate deadbeat dad. And now she must take on all of the gods in order to stop them from destroying mankind.

Deadline states that the show will consist of a storyline in which “each week she must maintain her secret identity while battling a slew of ancient monsters from Greek mythology and searching to uncover which of the other Greek gods is secretly plotting against her to take over the Earth”. Joy will write and executive produce the hour long project alongside Peter Chernin (Rise of The Planet Of The Apes) and Katherine Pope (New Girl).

Check out these preview pages from Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’s upcoming graphic novel Batman: Earth One. Much like J. Michael Straczynski and Shane Davis’ Superman: Earth One, it re-imagines the Dark Knight’s origin for a new age.

“Gary and I are tackling BATMAN from the beginning, before he knows what he’s doing and with a very different ultimate goal in mind,” said Johns. “He’s never left Gotham. And our Gotham and the people in it are very gray. Our heroes unlikely. Our villains hidden. Our story is only beginning with volume one.”

“It’s essentially the first piece of the jigsaw,” said Frank. “He’s not the Batman people know, but he might be one day. He’s certainly not yet a superhero. The fun is to watch him piece the persona together drawing on his experiences and the influences of those around him and, at this stage, the idea of becoming a ‘superhero’ hasn’t even entered his head.”

Batman: Earth One is available for pre-order on Amazon, and hits shelves on July 10th.

WARNING! SPOILERS ABOUND! <— that should be enough…

There are two ways to handle an adaptation, one of which is right and one of which is wrong. The right way to adapt a story to film is to stay true to the theme and story of the original work. You can tweak the details all you want. Take a few characters out, add a few new ones, change locations, whatever. The fanboys will bitch but as long as you stay true to what the original material is about you will have done your job, and it’s just a fact of life that that stuff needs to happen sometimes to make a book or comic work on film.

The wrong way to adapt something is to completely neglect what the original is about or was trying to say but then try to cover your ass by staying true to some of the details. Unfortunately, this is the route that Wanted went. It’s got dialog and scenes lifted directly from the comic all over the place to remind you that, yes, this is the Wanted you know and love. However, they could not have missed the mark further as far as staying true to the message of the original.

Wanted, as written by Mark Millar, was a comic about breaking out of your mundane, meaningless existence and just giving into your id fully. It was unapologetic, it was brutal, it was amoral, it was nihilistic. It was a book that you want to be repulsed by but somewhere deep inside there was a primal part of you that was cheering with joy.

The movie attempts to take a book about bad guys being bad just because they can, and makes it a movie about good guys being bad because they are trying to make the world a better place. It tries to spread the message of giving into your id and giving a big “fuck you” to the world, but at the same time is apologetic about it. Like a kid throwing a temper tantrum until he accidentally breaks something, then cleaning up the mess while uttering a non-stop stream of “I’m sorry’s”.

The movie also decides to change up the story a bit. The comic revolved around a secret society of super villains that had killed off all of the super heroes and now control the world. The movie is about a secret society of assassins that was started by a group of weavers who get their assassination orders from a secret code imbedded in the thread of cloth woven by the Loom of Fate. I’m not making that up and it is exactly as stupid as it sounds.

At least they kept with the main thread of Wesley Gibson, as played by James McAvoy, being a completely normal, boring, insiginficant person before learning that his father was a bad ass killer and now he has to follow in his father’s footsteps. Kind of. The father is a different person than he is in the comic, and really the whole dynamic is thrown off because of it. You know what, they really didn’t get any aspect of the comic right.

So we’ve got a movie that is a horrible adaptation with an absolutely retarded plot. Case closed, right? Not quite. Despite its many failings, Wanted is one hell of a fun ride.

Director Timur Bekmambetov gained fame by directing the absolutely bat shit crazy Russian flicks Nightwatch and Daywatch, and all the strengths and weaknesses he showed there are present in Wanted. Bekmambetov is all about big ideas and big set pieces. He is a visual artist that wants to show you things you haven’t seen before, and they can be thrilling. Wanted is a series of set pieces strewn together with the weakest of threads. Bekmambetov hasn’t learned to tell a story yet, and I’m not sure he wants to. He wants to show you some cool shit and the story is just the excuse to do that.

If he could manage to be more consistent, Bekmambetov (man that is not a fun name to type) could really be a powerhouse director. As it stands, Wanted is wildly inconsistent in every way. There are moments of visual extravagance and humor but they happen too seldom to ever feel natural. There are times when they go all out with the in your face nihilism from the comic and then moments when they back step and try to be moralistic or dramatic. One scene happens and then the next scene happens and they rarely feel connected. The movie has more montages than a Rocky flick. It’s kind of a mess.

James McAvoy does a decent job in his first big headlining role but the real stars of the show are Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman. I’m not the biggest Jolie fan but she really comes off as effortlessly cool here. She’s also charming and manages to be sexy despite her increasing resemblance to Christian Bale in The Machinist. Morgan Freeman is always basically Morgan Freeman, but this was a Morgan Freeman that said “Kill this mothafucka” and could bend bullets and that’s just fun.

So at the end of the day we have a neutered and bastardized version of the comic, a ridiculous plot with more than a few nods to Fight Club and The Matrix, and inconsistent messy filmmaking. But none of that really matters, just turn off your brain and let yourself enjoy watching James McAvoy attack a textile factory with explosive rats. It’s really kind of cool.
