Former UFC fighter Nate “Rock” Quarry has been fighting his entire life. Raised within an abusive cult, movies, video games and comic books were Nate’s first means of escape. Later as an MMA fighter Nate talks about his fights in the octagon and as a single father that led to him creating “Zombie Cage Fighter”, his new zombies meets MMA fighting graphic novel that you can support right now on Kickstarter. Along the way we talk about dealing with depression, classic fights in comic books and the awesomeness of collecting everything from Star Wars figures to Bowen Designs statues! And also dealing with bullies at your daughter’s school!

New Geekscape time! As the drummer and lyricist for the popular ska punk band Less Than Jake, Vinnie Fiorello helped define the soundtrack to my life. As one of the co-founders of Fueled By Ramen Records, he introduced the world to bands like Fall Out Boy, Paramore, The Gym Class Heroes and Geeakscape’s favorite band and theme song artist Punchline! He also has his own collectible toy line and shop, new indie publishing label and more! Now Vinnie is a guest on the Geekscape podcast to talk about his new creative pursuit: the ska and comic book hybrid ‘The Inevitables’! Fans of The Umbrella Academy, Tank Girl and Y: The Last Man will probably love ‘The Inevitables’, which also features the talents of Obi Fernandez (Westbound Train, Meen Machine) Jono Diener (The Swellers), Alex Stern (Big D and the Kids Table), Matt Appleton (Reel Big Fish), Billy Kottage (The Interrupters) and more! After several hours of waiting in room 5AB (and seeing Josh get up close with some of the featured superstars outside of the room) the panel that I’d been waiting for (and the one panel that I’d decided that I had to attend was finally here).

The Sherlock Manga panel cleared out pretty quickly and swarms of people in WWE shirts (probably more Nikki Bella and Alexa Bliss than anything else) began swarming to the front of the panel room. I managed to move up numerous rows over the course of the previous two panels and obtained a pretty nice seat. A graphic for the panel appeared on the projector screen, and the excitement in the room began to grow.

The panel was moderated by the fantastic Renee Young (#SaveTalkingSmack), and Charlotte, Nikki Bella, Brie Bella, Sasha Banks, Bayley, and Becky Lynch were all in attendance. All of the talent seemed excited and energized to be at the panel, which also featured Mattel SVP Lori Pantel.

The crowd freaked out as each superstar was introduced, and it was surprisingly pretty tough to not feel starstruck seeing so many of my favourite superstars in the same place at the same time.

The announcements came fast, and there were a lot of them (Lori noted that she wanted to get through them quickly to give fans more time with the superstars, who naturally they were really here to see). Mattel revealed everything from a line of fashion dolls featuring a myriad of the female superstars, new action figure lines, and some incredible San Diego Comic-Con exclusive figures from Wrestlemania 32 that were extremely (extremely) hard not to purchase, even though I told myself that I’d never buy another toy after the Amiibo debacle from a couple of years back.

The Eva Marie WWE Superstars doll on the floor later on.

Renee opened up a Q&A session, asking what it felt like to be able to be a part of this new line of fashion dolls. Nikki noted that it was an honour, while Bayley added that this is all because of the fans, stating that the myriad of attendees in Fearless hats, Sasha Banks glasses, Hugger shirts, and the like were the reason that all of this was happening in the first place.

Next up, Renee asked if the ladies ever have an opportunity to reflect on everything that they’ve accomplished thus far in their careers. Becky told us that just before the WM32 Triple Threat, she was sitting in a Whole Foods and started simply crying, stating that “When I started wrestling at 15, this just didn’t seem possible. To have our heads on the side of AT&T stadium just didn’t seem possible,” continuing “We just keep going, and keep progressing, and us making history is now just the norm.”

Yeah. She’s the coolest.

With all of the history that had been made so far, Renee asked what the ladies would still like to accomplish as their careers continue. “Main event Wrestlemania,” Charlotte said without hesitation, while Brie Bella called for an all-women’s Royal Rumble, adding that “Being a mom and now sitting and watching these girls do amazing things every week, watching as a fan. Seeing these dolls come out, and seeing these ladies be role models.” She sees these dolls and thinks that birdie can be independent – she doesn’t need a Ken doll in this day and age. Brie notes that she’s looking forward to one day explaining why she has an action figure, and tellling Birdie about everything that her and her friends did to make all of this happen. “It’s insane that I’ll one day get to see my daughter grow up and be proud of all of these women in WWE.”

Renee brought up one of the few elephants in the room, asking Nikki if her and John had set a date yet, and what she’d been up to since the mixed-tag match and proposal back at Wrestlemania. “We finally set a date,” Nikki said. “But I’m not going to say when. But it was insane getting engaged if front of all of you guys. My favourite part is watching it back and seeing John’s voice getting all shaky.” She says that she’s been busy “doing the reality thing” with season 7 of Total Divas, while waiting for her neck to continue to heal. She added that “We found out that it’s not fully fused. I have a herniation, but I think that with time it will heal.”

Renee adds, “So it’s fair to say we’ll see you in the ring at some point? To which Nikki answers “I think so.” Brie jumps in, yelling “Brie’s coming back, you’ll see!”

Brie then got some time to talk about being pregnant and giving birth, noting that Birdie’s head had a 14-inch circumference and that it was a very long labour, adding that “I feel like I was pregnant for years, it was insane. I ended up in an emergency c-section which was unfortunate.” She reveals that she’s also preparing to come back to the ring, stating that Daniel is finally letting them get their own ring, that he’ll be acting as her coach, and that she hopes to make it back sometime in 2018.

That’s a lot of talent in one room.

Renee asks Charlotte about her experience in switching brands, to which she says the difference has been huge, “I remember being on RAW, and thinking that I want to be better than Smackdown. No offense, but now I want Smackdown to be better than RAW. I think that just new competition, and a new group of women and men, and wanting to be the better brand – it automatically creates competition and I think that’s healthy.” She continues, talking about her goals to win the Smackdown women’s champion and becoming the first female triple crown winner.

Some really interesting questions then begin to flow as Renee asks about the very best moments in their careers. Charlotte starts, saying “I remember being in guerrilla and looking at Becky and Sasha and knowing that they’ve wanted this for their entire lives. Thinking that I was here, continuing my dad’s legacy. He spent 40 years creating this legacy and now I was continuing it.” She continues, stating that she remembers watching him retire in 2007 and never thinking she’d be a women’s wrestler, and then all these years later he’s walking her down the aisle and into the ring.

Renee asks if anyone would like to see Becky beat up Ellsworth, and the crowd responds with huge Yes! chants. “He’s in the women’s division pretty much, so I don’t see why not. Summerslam is right around the corner,” Becky adds. Brie responds “But you couldn’t do any chin locks, are you going to be okay with that?”

Bayley is the most recent NXT call up in the room, and Renee asks how much different the roster and fan base feel from when she was in NXT. Bayley says that “The roster is kind of similar; like you said I was the last one down there. So when I got to WWE everyone was there already so it was kind of just another bigger version of NXT. I kind of knew the girls and knew everybody by the time I got there.” She continues, “The fanbase is different. It’s kind of good and kind of bad. NXT fans are kind of like a family, and they watched us grow and watched us make it to WWE so they kind of know us. They’re smaller crowds, and it’s only like once a month. Now we’re live every Monday at RAW.” She adds that “AT FYE, I’ve got Bayley gummy bears. They’re incredible! Go to FYE and buy some Gummy Bears and Booty-O’s and T-Shirts and give them to your friends!’

I listened. #LevelSeven

The fan questions begin, and a little girl starts by asking what the craziest thing that they’ve witnessed backstage is. Nikki says “where do we start,” and Brie adds “This one time – yeah.” They begin to talk about a time when a Daniel Bryan match was cut short due to a potential concussion. Nikki notes that “He was screaming at everyone and cussing and Brie was trying to stop him and I was like where’s the popcorn, this is great!” Brie says “Note to self. Don’t cut Daniel Bryan matches.”

Charlotte talks about a time at TLC when her dad was acting as her manager. “He thought I really got hurt, but was a really important piece in what was supposed to happen in the end of the match. Instead of taking off the turnbuckle he was beside me like “Honey are you okay?” She began yelling at him that she was fine and that “You’re supposed to be taking off the turnbuckle!”

She continues in what may be the funniest quote of the panel. “Sometimes he would just Woo! randomly during the matches when it wasn’t about him at the time. Like, why are you wooing? This is supposed to be about me right now. The amount of stress and grey hair he caused me that first year, you have no idea. The struggle is so real.”

Charlotte points to Becky – “She had to kiss him, so I’m sure that’s up there for her.”

The next question goes to an adult male instead of a little girl. He asks about the best veteran advice they received, who gave it to them, and if any of them are related to Kurt Angle.

Brie starts, noting that when she was starting out she told Rey Mysterio that she was so nervous and that she wanted to vomit, and he said “Honestly the day you don’t feel that way is the day that you shouldn’t be in the business. Every day when you’re performing you should feel like this.” She continues, talking about just how right he was.

Nikki talks about being nervous at her first match at a WWE Live event. She says that Scotty Armstrong gave her some simple advice that she still thinks about to this day: “Just breath baby girl.”

Sasha keeps it simple with some advice from Dusty. “Just be you baby, just be you.” She says “I’ll always take that with me.”

Bayley says that Jason Styles gave her some advice from May Young, that “The day you’re not nervous is the day that you should leave.” She says that “Before going out I’m all like “Why do I do this to myself? why am I doing this?” and when she comes back from a match she just thinks, “Oh yeah. That’s why.”

Becky says that William Regal told her the the business is like riding a wave. “It’s like surfing. You have to be on the wave and just go with it. Sometimes you’re down and sometimes you’re up, but another wave is coming and you just need to go with it.”

Nikki talks about Cena asking “Why are you fighting?” She adds, “That’s always been the best question.” Noting that it even popped up in the just-released Netflix series GLOW. “Why are we fighting? It’s so true. It makes everything better, that question. Why are we fighting?”

A fan asks what match they had to prepare and train for the most. For Bayley, it was the Iron Woman match, as “It was a long 30 minutes.” For Brie, it was her feud with Stephanie McMahon, “It was like, just don’t hurt the boss.” Nikki’s match with Charlotte at Hell In A Cell was hard, because she knew that there was something wrong with her neck.

Charlotte states that “I think NXT match where I won the title vs Natalya is where I probably had to prepare the most. One, I wasn’t sure that I was ready. Two, I hadn’t really been wrestling that long. I wanted to show the world that I wasn’t just my last name.

Becky had an interesting thought that hadn’t crossed my mind before. “Maybe, I’m just thinking in terms of – the ladder match for example. It’s a matter of handling these ladders. We have smaller hands than the guys and they weigh a lot. It’s a matter of manuevering them. Same with tables. These kind of matches I need to go in and figure out the apparatuses.”

A fan notes that he’s surprised at lack of products for the rightful next Women’s Champion Carmella, and the history making champion Alexa Bliss, along with the coming winner this Sunday, the lovely Lana. “Where are they!?” he yells as the crowd boos. Josh (who was also in attendance) later tells me that this guy is at every wrestling show in the area. Lori from Mattel jokes that “The secret to really smart marketing is to keep people waiting.”

The best moment of the panel comes up next. The most adorable little girl ever is at the microphone. She can’t be more than five years old, and she has a voice that’s so high pitched that I’d bet it was inaudible to the older folks in the audience. She says “Sasha Banks……… I love you.” She begins to make her way back to her seat as Renee invites the little girl up to the stage. Sasha comes down, gives her a massive hug, and speaks to her off microphone for a moment. The crowd goes absolutely wild as the little girl heads back to her seat with tears of joy in her eyes, and Sasha gets back to her microphone and simply says “That is why we do it.”

Brian from Vancouver, who is about to begin training under Lance Storm asks for any advice they may have for people who want to be wrestlers. Becky says to “Just believe in yourself. It’s about hard work, dedication, and passion. Those are the three ingredients that will take you to the moon and back, and if you have those than nothing can stop you. Heck, I failed PE and I’m sitting up here.” Brie says that “There will be so many times you’ll want to give up. It’s about wading through those moments and thinking that there’s a reason you’re here. Believing that you can do it can go a long way. Just never give up. Nikki yells out “What’s that Brie? NEVER GIVE UP!?” As the crowd laughs.

A little boy in a John Cena getup asks what the best moment in their careers has been.

Nikki says “When the guy who’s shirt your wearing got down on one knee and proposed.” Brie states that she learned so much over her feud with Stephanie, while Bayley and Sasha both bring up NXT Brooklyn. Becky notes “Being able to be in the ring with Charlotte and Sasha at Wrestlemania 32, and seeing the new women’s title. And also becoming the first Smackdown Women’s Champion.”

For the last question, another little kid asks “What does it feel like fighting your friends?”

Charlotte jokes that “You hit your friends harder,” while Sasha adds that “I think it makes it more fun.”

Things wrapped up pretty quickly following this. Everyone thanked the crowd again for being such passionate fans, for being in attendance, and for all of the great questions. People began to clear the room, and I attempted to approach the stage as a means to get a few closer photos for this write-up. The crowd made getting anywhere near the superstars pretty tough, but Renee Young, who I may (possibly) favour over much of the in-ring talent (male or female), was kind enough to stop for a photo. I was so excited for this. I don’t often become star struck these days after years of doing this kind of stuff, but in this moment, I did. It’s sure to be a convention highlight for me for years to come. Also, #SaveTalkingSmack.

Overall, I think that I had more fun at this panel that at any other I’ve been to in years prior. Just listening to these people answer fan questions, most of which I’m sure they’ve been asked a thousand times, with excitement and sincerity was extremely refreshing, and it definitely made me more of a fan of each and every one of them.

I was diagnosed with Schizophrenia when I was about six. This was partially a formality as I had shown signs of it much earlier on — hallucinations (both visual and auditory), along with delusions and other troublesome symptoms. That diagnosis of Childhood Onset Schizophrenia was a blessing of sorts though, as I was able to learn (admittedly with some difficultly) that I saw and heard things that others did not. It took time, and a lot of bullying, but I think it let me adapt to living amongst normal people much more easily than if my disorder had shown up later in life.

I found a great deal of comfort in toys. The one magical thing about my case of Schizophrenia (I don’t know if this is typical) is that toys had personalities. I actually like this part. Stuffed animals are my favorite; they are the most understanding and amicable. Dolls and figures have a tendency to be a bit, um, set in their ways. I have over two hundred plushes and each one is a friend to me. My brother calls my room, “The Room of a Thousand Eyes,” and that is not much of an exaggeration.

I have been asked before if I had a favorite amongst my fluffy friends and I genuinely do not. At different times I may favor one for cuddling over the others but I do rotate every so often to make sure it is fair. There is, however, one plush who actually isn’t inside my room but in the hallway outside. His name is Klaus and he is a large, very old brown bear that I received from my Grandfather upon his passing. Klaus is a very special boy because he is assigned a job (which for the record, he volunteered for). He guards my room from the scary things I see. Sort of a “Guard Bear,” I guess. He takes it very seriously and I offered him time off once, but he declined and sounded a little offended with the suggestion. I do make sure to salute him and thank him for his hard work every night as I head off to bed, as well as every morning when I head out to start my day. His “voice ” is slightly gruff like an old man but he has a delightful guffawing laugh. It isn’t like my Grandfather’s, in case you were wondering (his was a softer voice), but I can totally see Klaus being some other plush’s grandfather.

My ability to “hear” toys  was sort of a secret super power but not without its flaws. I have a tendency to buy toys that are damaged and then repair them, rather than buying a one in perfect condition. I feel bad for them and want to nurse them back to health.

While the plushes can communicate to me the way as humans do – with words – sometimes, it is as if they are projecting their emotions instead. When the damaged ones come into my care, more often than not, they are too timid to talk and even their emotions are weak, like a flickering candle struggling to stay lit on a windy night. The longer they stay in my care, the more they open up and the majority of them do eventually use words. I have a few that never went on to use words but they are in the minority.

In my high school art class, we had a bin full of dismembered and otherwise abused action figures that other students had used for sculptures and things like that. I spent a good portion of my class time crafting new limbs for the poor dears and talking soothingly to them. Yes, I previously stated that I am more a of “plush person”, but I couldn’t just leave them there. It felt like I would be leaving a wounded soldier in the gutter. I still have them, standing (albeit with some difficulty) on a shelf above my desk. Whenever I look at them I feel a mixed bag of emotions: sorrow because they have suffered, pity because they are not what they used to be, and finally, relief that I could be there for them. I am glad that, while they are but shells of their former selves, they are not sitting in the bottom of that bin waiting to be further torn apart.

I remember watching the original Toy Story in theaters. I was so traumatized by the neighbor kid, Sid, abusing and dissecting his toys that I had to leave. I was bawling. It was like watching a graphic horror movie. I understand that that was sort of the point, only it was intended to be harmless because the victims were toys rather than people. But when you anthropomorphize toys, it becomes just as upsetting and seeing it at a young age really threw me for a loop. I don’t watch gory movies but think of one that involved the victim being innocent and vulnerable, like a young child or a small animal, and then overlay that victim with what torture methods Sid used, like ripping off the head and affixing it to a different body or burying different limbs in the sand box. It would be awful, right? To this day, I can’t watch that movie without fast-forwarding through that part.

I know that I am more than just my disorder, but it takes up a lot of my energy trying to deal with it. Even indirectly, medicine drains most of the vitality that I have. At nighttime, most people my age are out and about or hell, at least awake doing some sort of activity. By 8 PM, I am barely coherent.

So, this is my life. I am well aware that many, many people have it worse off than I do but I am not them. I am me. And I will go back to sitting here, cuddling Cupid the stuffed cat and letting my mind wander.

Nothing to see here, folks. Well, not for you anyways.

Fans of unusual plushes are going to get a kick out of this. Previously, Hashtag Collectibles created a Stuffed Water Bear (also known as a Tardigrade). I love the blue dude but he is admittedly pretty large and if that was an issue for you in the past, your Water Bear-envy days are at finally an end.

Hashtag Collectibles now has the Water Bear Mini. Each of these smaller plushes measures nine inches by five inches, which is quite a difference from the original’s 18 inches by 10 and half inches. And while it may have shrunk in size, it is clear that the critter’s cuteness remains intact.

Now that you have seen and, undoubtably fallen in love with, the Water Bear Mini, one question remains: how do you buy it? Well, you have two options. You can buy an individual Water Bear Mini for $14.99 or purchase the “Water Bear Special,” which is six plushes for the cost of five ($74.95). And of course, if you live by the motto “Go Big or Go Home,” there is always the original Stuffed Water Bear, priced at $39.99. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of these options, personally.

Pretty soon, another subscription box service will be joining Geekscape’s unboxing line-up! TokyoTreat consists of three different series for fans of Japanese culture: the original TokyoTreat, YumeTwins, and NOMAKENOLIFE. Candy lovers and overall snack fiends will be interested in TokyoTreat. This line is broken up into three different box sizes, ranging from $14.99 to $34.99 a month. As you would expect, the more you pay, the more items and variety you receive. Here are some examples of what sort of items you might find in a box:

YumeTwins has a rate of $29.99 a month, with a focus on all things kawaii. Be it a squishy plush, some pretty stationary, or a cute lifestyle item (like the upcoming Totoro handtowel), odds are that you will find something to love. Next month’s theme is Totoro, so if you have an interest in the lovable Studio Ghibli character, be sure to register in the next seven days or you will miss your chance!

Finally, there is NOMAKENOLIFE, a subscription box all about Japanese cosmetics. Items may include skincare, haircare, body care, make-up, bath accessories, and tools. Like YumeTwins, there is only one size of this box at the cost of $29.99 a month but with a variety of payment plans to suit your needs, such as a recurring plan every 1, 3, 6, or 12 months.

Geekscape is now part of Tokyotreat’s referral program so if you are intrigued by any of these three boxes, we would super-duper appreciate it if you used our affiliate links found here: TokyoTreat, YumeTwins, and NOMAKENOLIFE. Look forward to seeing more from the TokyoTreat family in the future!

That Corrin amiibo Nintendo promised to make is still M.I.A. but thankfully, Good Smile Company is filling the void with both a figma and Nendoroid of the female version of Fire Emblem: Fates‘ hero.

figma Corrin (Female) looks graceful and is able to be posed in many positions , thanks to joints and flexible plastic in different parts. The heroine comes with two facial expressions, a calm, smiling one and a yelling one for battle scenes. She is also equipped with her trusty sword, Yato, as well as the Dragonstone. As with all figma, Corrin is packaged with an articulated stand to help support her in her various poses.

figma Corrin (Female) ships in August 2017 but is available to pre-order now at the price of ¥6,296.

If you decide to pre-order her from the Good Smile Company online shop, a bonus accessory, the Omega Yato sword, will be included as a bonus.

For those of you who prefer your warriors on the diminutive side, Good Smile Company has also created the Nendoroid Corrin (Female). The Nendoroid is also posable and comes with a variety of accessories. Unlike the figma, the Nendoroid gets both the Nohr and Hoshido versions of the Yato sword. Also included is a Dragonstone. The accessory that stands out most in my opinion are the head and arm parts that allow Corrin to perform her “Dragon Fang Shot” attack (seen in the last image). Additional facial expressions include a gentle smile and brave, combat-ready face.

Like the figma, the Nendoroid ships in August 2017 and is available to pre-order now. The price is moderately lower at ¥4,815 but there is no additional bonus for purchasing the figure at the Good Smile Smile online shop.

Which of these figures do you like best?

The odds are good that Hashtag Collectibles‘ newest goods are odd. They are a series of roly-poly critters called Oddballz and I don’t know about you but I think they look awfully fun to squish. Series 1 consists of Blobfish, Water Bear, and Cthulhu.

oddballz_blobfish_squishy_1024x1024_8cd8b4e4-2d4f-4f46-9fb2-725b9a347868_1024x1024

All three of the critters are available as a four-inch plush or as a two and a half-inch keyring ornament. I am honestly torn between which style I like more. I think that Blobfish keyring would look great on my purse but then again, who wouldn’t want a Water Bear that looks like it swallowed a tennis ball? Tough decisions! Thankfully, the Oddballz Series 1 set is an option for just such a dilemma. Containing all three characters in both their plush and keychain forms for a total of six plushes, this may be the best option for a collector.

img_9546_1024x1024_6fc45677-b54c-4aec-b72d-46832ed58185_1024x1024

The plushes in this limited edition series can be purchased individually for $12.99 each or as a set, a $62.94 value, retailing at $59.99.

Hashtag Collectibles, makers of those amazing Blobfish plushes, is venturing into canine territory with their new plush Doge. No, that wasn’t a typo. I meant “Doge” as in that well-known meme with the words and the dog photos. I know you know what I am talking about.photo_jul_25_3_49_14_pm_1024x1024

Anyways, back to plush toys. The Doge plush measures six inches by nine inches, a good desktop size. It costs $16.99. In my experience, Hashtag Collectibles makes high quality plushes. If you are a lover of internet-famous animals or simply a fan of the breed, I would totally check it out.

Oh and while you are over at Hashtag Collectibles’ online store, take a look at the Stuffed Water Bear. You will thank me later.

With all this hype surrounding Pokémon Sun and Moon, it is easy to forget some of our earlier monster buddies that got us into the series in the first place. Toy manufacturer Sanei Boueki is helping to keep that nostalgia alive with their new Pokémon Mochi-Fuwa Cushion set. The trio of squishy plushes stars Slowpoke, Chansey, and Spheal.

Screen Shot 2016-08-14 at 11.55.51 AM

Spheal measures 25 centimeters wide, 30 centimeters deep, and 25 centimeters tall. To pre-order this guy, it will cost¥4,500.

Screen Shot 2016-08-14 at 11.55.36 AM

Chansey is 25 centimeters wide, 30 centimeters deep, and 31 centimeters tall. Like Spheal, this pink Pokémon will cost ¥4,500 to pre-order.

Screen Shot 2016-08-14 at 11.54.30 AM

Slowpoke is slightly bigger than the first two: 23 centimeters wide, 46 centimeters long, and 20 centimeters tall. Because of the size difference, it carries a higher price tag of ¥5,000 to preorder.

All three plushes are scheduled to ship in November 2016.

Word to the wise: I would not recommend waiting if you are thinking about ordering one of these guys. AmiAmi’s allotment is already sold out so I imagine HobbyLink Japan‘s will soon meet the same fate.

If you’ve ever dreamed of your terrible father and stepmother being dismembered by an 8-foot-tall, remorseless teddy bear, then this week’s pick is for you! Matt picked Dolls (1987) so that he could talk about how great this early draft of How I Met Your Mother is. He also wanted to talk about the trash punk girls with bad teeth. We think. Hold onto your porcelain eyes, it’s another episode of Horror Movie Night!

Briefly: San Diego Comic-Con fast approaches (too fast, I’m not ready), and we’re getting to the point that exclusive announcements seem to be flooding our inboxes by the minute.

This latest announcement from Entertainment Earth may be one of the best exclusives I’ve seen announced for this year’s SDCC thus far.

You probably don’t recognize him… but it’s a convention exclusive The Force Awakens C-3PO that stands 18 inches tall.

Here are some sweet reasons why you should probably pick one up:

– “You probably don’t recognize me with my red arm.”
– Exclusive limited edition chrome C-3PO action figure!
– Fresh from the Battle of Takodana in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
– First-ever C-3PO action figure at this scale with his classic reflective finish!
– The protocol droid stands 18-inches tall.
– He’s shiny and gold, just like in the movies!

It’s huge, it’s gorgeous, and it’s just $60 at the Entertainment Earth booth (#2343).

This convention exclusive “is a shiny gold robot boasting 7-points of articulation. His chrome finish is as shiny as you please, with a red arm to honor his fallen friend from the days following his adventures on Endor. C-3PO comes packaged in an amazing premium edition box featuring an exquisite Resistance symbol backdrop and gold foil highlights.

At 18-inches tall, it’s “the first time a C-3PO action figure has been offered with his classic reflective finish at this scale. It’s like a mini-replica of the suit Anthony Daniels wears in the film, so you can almost hear his voice in your head! You’ll thank Jakks when you bring home this Resistance spymaster and famous translator.”

Yeah, we’ll take two (one to open and one to leave in the box, duh).

Be sure to let us know if you’ll be picking one up!

Fans of Yo-kai Watch should pay extra attention to Hasbro’s booths (3213 and 3329) at San Diego Comic-Con. Today, the toy company revealed that one of their con-exclusive items will be a vinyl figure of the Yo-kai Dianyan, bundled with 5 special Yo-kai Medals. The toy will cost US$29.99 and be limited in edition, although exact numbers are not yet known.

Besides looking rather spiffy, the figure will unlock the feline Dianyan in the Yo-kai Watch 3DS game. I don’t know about you guys but I still need that fellow on my team! Additionally, the accompanying Yo-kai Medals are compatible with the Hasbro’s toy version of the Yo-kai Watch.

Can’t make it to the con? Hasbro will have a small batch of them available to purchase on their site after SDCC ends.

If you weren’t aware already, Toho is producing their newest addition to their long line of Godzilla films with Godzilla Resurgence. According to Toho, this film is meant to be a complete reboot to the already existing franchise. With that being said, check out the pics below, complete with the, well, weird looking tail. The figure will cost about $126. It’s a bit pricy, but measuring at 40CM (15.75 inches) from head-to-tail and standing at 18CM (7″) tall, it’s perfect for any Godzilla fan. Unfortunately for us, there’s no word on pre-ordering.

Godzilla Resurgence is set to release in Japan on July 29, 2016.

At Medicom’s 20th anniversary party, the Japanese toy company previewed several new figure prototypes. One particularly spectacular-looking one was The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Link from their Real Action Hero line. Key features of this line are posable figures, fabric clothing, and high quality accessories.

As we can see from the prototype on display, Link will be packaged with at least a sword, shield, bow, and quiver of arrows. I would not be surprised if additional items are included at release.

Pricing and release date are currently unavailable.

Tokyo Toy Fair has just begun and we’ve already got some cool news from our friends at the distributor Bluefin! Bandai’s Chogokin robot figure set, Toy Story Combination Woody Robo Sheriff Star, will be made available for fans in North America. The set includes five characters from the beloved Disney-Pixar film series, Toy Story (Woody, Rex, Bullseye, Hamm, and Slinky Dog) and reimagines them as transforming figures that combine into a larger 9 inch tall robot figure, Woody Robo Sheriff Star. Think of it as Toy Story-flavored Voltron.

Toy Story Chogokin 1

The individual figures look lovely in their own right, don’t they? I love that Woody can ride Bullseye! It is interesting how Buzz Lightyear isn’t included in the set though. Could a separate Buzz-themed Chogokin be in the pipeline?

Toy Story Chogokin 2

The Toy Story Combination Woody Robo Sheriff Star set will cost US$169.99 and is scheduled to release in December 2016. Pre-orders will open at San Diego Comic-Con. Early orders will also include a special picture book. Additional images can be found on Bluefin Tamashii USA’s Facebook page.

Gayle Middleton and her family of Vamplets are no stranger to Kickstarter. Her Ghost Pony and Baby Undead Dragon, not to mention series two of the Vamplets plush line, all got their start on the crowdfunding site. They are now trying their hand at a non-stuffed medium by way of the Vamplets Mini Figures campaign.

The Mini Figures Series consists of seven pieces, one of which is exclusive to backers of the campaign. The figures range in height from two to three inches. The main four characters featured are Ghost Pony, Vampyre Baby Lily Rose, Baby Undead Dragon, and Werewolf Baby Howliss.

In addition to the standard, painted Ghost Pony, four clear variants will be made. The Ghost Pony “Trifecta of Terror” includes a glow-in-the-dark Graveyard Green Pony, Pandemonium Pink Pony, and Clear Ghost Pony. The Clear Ghost variant will only be available during the Kickstarter. The fourth Ghost Pony, Ice Ghost Pony, is extra-special and incredibly limited in edition. Only 24 of these toys will ever be made.

The campaign has 23 days left to go and needs a little more than $30,000 to make these nightmares a reality. You can find additional details and add a pledge of your own here.

Add this to the list of things I never thought would exist. It turns out Japan loves Ted, the wildly-inappropriate living teddy bear. Who knew? His movies are so popular over in the Land of the Rising Sun that Max Factory and Good Smile Company have developed a figma Ted, complete with a beer bottle and a bong. Yes, he comes with a mini-PVC bong; you can’t make this stuff up.045304fbd2c70eb4b749b7d9e393b4b1

Like all figma, the Ted figure is posable, with articulated joints, and has multiple expressions. To change Ted’s facial features, you switch out his muzzle part (he comes with laughing, smiling, and upset expressions) and move around his articulated eyebrows. He can sit, stand, and do several other poses with the help of the included figma stand. Ted is smaller than most figma, standing only 55 millimeters in height.

figma Ted is scheduled to ship this July for the price of ¥2,963. He is available to pre-order at the Good Smile Company Online Shop. Pre-orders close March 30 at 9 PM Japan Time.

What do you think of this addition to the figma line?

WonderCon is set to take place in Los Angeles this month and many of us are still wondering what we should expect to spend our remaining money on. BeeFy & Co. (and its creator, Menh Voong) over at the exhibit hall’s booth #1331 delivered some of that news today! WonderCon will mark the release of the plush Totopoo – “Smile” Edition. For those unfamiliar, BeeFy & Co. is a brand that spans toys (both plush and vinyl as well as other mediums), fashion, and art prints. The majority of the plushes are from the “Adventures of Ryupoo” Collection, featuring stylized stuffed critters, some of which come with accessories.

The “Smile” Edition of Totopoo, modeled after My Neighbor Totoro, has a wide grin across his face. Like the other plushes, Totopoo stands 10 inches tall and will cost $25. He comes with a large fabric leaf embedded with a magnet so it can stick to his articulated head. Note that while this variant will debut at WonderCon, it is not exclusive to the event.

If you prefer your Totopoo to be the stoic type, a regular (not grinning) edition will be released at the Chicago Comic And Entertainment Expo (a.k.a. C2E2)  and Silicon Valley Comic Con.

The latest release for Good Smile Company’s  Nendoroid posable figures is En Yufuin from Cute High Earth Defense Clube LOVE! (Binan Koukou Chukyuboeibu LOVE! in Japanese). Part of the company’s Orange Rouge line that caters to female fans, the figure of En-chan a.k.a. Battle Lover Cerulean is perfectly timed; the second season of his anime was recently announced.

Nendoroid En Yufuin stands about 100 millimeters tall and is packaged with several interchangeable parts. He comes with his Love Stick weapon along with a special arm part to hold it. Other arm-pose pieces include the finger-point and heart-symbol, both used at the end of the team’s transformation sequence. En-chan also comes with three facial expressions: “standard,” smiling, and sighing. My favorite accessories are definitely the bath house towel and bucket that he wears when he visits the Kurotamayu Bath House. You can see additional photos on Kahotan’s Blog.

You can pre-order Nendoroid En Yufuin now for the price of ¥5,000. If you pre-order him at the Good Smile Company online shop, a Nendoroid Plus Rubber Strap of En will be included with your order. Keep in mind, orders close March 16 at 9PM Japan time.

Any fans thinking of picking up this guy?

The New York Toy Fair opened today but that didn’t stop Funko from giving fans a preview of some of their booth’s exciting displays. One of those displays that is creating a buzz is a set of Funko POP! figures made in the likenesses of Sailor Moon‘s iconic heroes.

Photos show figures of Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Venus, and Tuxedo Mask. Moon and Venus each come with their feline companion, Luna and Artemis. According to the booth’s placard, these toys should release April 2016. While their official prices were not shown, I imagine they cost the same as a typical POP! figure ($12.50).

What do you think of the Sailor Senshi in this style? Are you planning on picking up any of them?

A popular feline character from the comic series Saga will get her turn in the limelight (emerald-light?) when the Lying Cat talking plush debuts at Emerald City Comic Con with an exclusive variant.

The Lying Cat plush stands a whopping 17 and a half-inches and looks absolutely huggable. Give the sun on her collar a squeeze and you’ll hear Lying Cat’s well-known line: “LYING!” Both the standard and the variant editions will include this feature.

So what makes this variant special? The variant Lying Cat’s collar is green, most likely to tie into the whole “Emerald City” part of ECCC. She will also have a limited edition ear tag.

Dying for the variant and can’t make it to the con? ReedPOP, the creator of ECCC, has you covered. The Lying Cat Talking Plush – ECCC Exclusive Variant is currently stocked in their online store. You can purchase her now for $35. I imagine supplies are limited so I wouldn’t sit on this one.

What do you think of this exclusive? Are attending Emerald City Comic Con? Let us know in the comments!

This Fall Hasbro will be launching some My Little Pony toys that are a bit different than what we’re used to seeing. This new line is called Guardians of Harmony, and it’s intense! The first image I saw of the line was Shining Armor riding a giant transformed-into-full-dragon Spike, who has armor of his own. What?! That’s so cool!
635906658846886888-B6012AS00-MLP-Big-Dragon-Spike-LS-47660

There are many more than just that, and you’ll be able to get your first look at them in person if you’re at the New York Toy Fair this weekend. Samatha Lomow, the senior vice president of Hasbro Brands, said that after talking to fans and consumers who had asked for new ways to play with the core ponies, “They just wanted the characters brought to life in a whole new way.”

635906658840802849-MLP-Guardians-Figure-and-Friend-Princess-Twilight-Sparkle-and-Changeling-

That’s definitely exciting for an older fan, like myself, that’s been with the series as a whole since she was little, and Friendship Is Magic since it started. Speaking of, you’ll get to see characters in this line that we haven’t seen for a little bit, such as the Cockatrice, Queen Chrysalis and the Changelings, and the Shadowbolts. It’s also nice to see some variation, as these are NOT the average brushable ponies they usually release with each new season.635906658848290897-mlp-princesses

Single figures will run around $9.99, “Figure and Friend” assortments will be $14.99 and include two characters from the same set, such as Princess Twilight and the Changeling, or Queen Chrysalis with Spike the Dragon. The set of Princesses Celestia and Luna will be $19.99, and the 13-inch dragon Spike will be $39.99 and comes with removable armor, fireball projectiles and a saddle so ponies can hop on for a ride. Keep your eyes peeled to the stores later this year when they start to arrive in Fall.

There are many ways to express love: a hug, a kiss, flowers, and chocolates. But if you want to make someone feel extra-special, the ladies at the nail salon suggest going with something unexpected. And nothing says “unexpected” like bath tub filled with blobfish plushes!

blobfishtubmini

Hashtag Collectibles, makers of such toys as the Grumpy Cat Puppet and the original Stuffed Blobfish, have taken the dream of floating amongst a sea of squishy, pink cuteness and made it a reality with their “Bath Time Blobby” special. You have the option of selecting the “Large” variety, which includes eight large Blobfish (the same size as the original plush), or the “Mini,”containing 50 mini Blobfish (matching the single mini found here). These bundles are sold at the discounted price of $280 (value of $320) and $649.99 (value of $749.50), respectively.

Hashtagcollectibles.com

If the price tag gives you a bit of sticker-shock, it is nice to note that 10 percent from every piece of Blobfish merchandise sold is donated to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. And if you are flying solo this Valentine’s Day (no shame in that), you can always cuddle up with a Blobfish of your very own. I love mine. His name is Blobbington and he is a very special boy.

I would wager that pretty much anyone who watched anime in the 90s has at least heard of Rumiko Takahashi’s martial arts comedy gem, Ranma 1/2. The series’ characters are a focus in a new S.H. Figuarts line, the most recent additions being the female version of the titular fighter, Ranma followed by the Chinese Amazon, Shampoo.

Ranma in female form (or as Kuno would call him, “The Pigtailed Girl”) will come packaged with an articulated body, a stand for posing, four interchangeable facial expressions, a sword, a fighting staff, a kettle, and “chudo-n” special effects piece. This figure will cost ¥5,184 and release January 30.

Shampoo, one of Ranma’s many suitors, is scheduled to release in June of this year. No other details were given. But from looking over these product shots, we can gather that she will at least come with a bowl of ramen and a delivery box from her grandmother’s Cat Café.

Wonder Festival 2016 Winter begins February 7 in Japan and announcements of lovely new toys are popping up on the web. Good Smile Company and Max Factory always bring special items with them to the event and this year is no exception.

The headliner is of course, Snow Miku, a wintery-themed Hatsune Miku. Every year, the Vocaloid’s seasonal attire is designed and voted on by fans. This year’s theme was “Winter Sports in Hokkaido” and the winning artist, Kotatsu Otogi, envisioned Miku in a snow outfit topped off with a cap resembling a snow owl. The design was transformed into a Nendoroid as well as a figma.

Nendoroid Snow Miku: Snow Owl ver. has a very special feature. Each of the figure’s snow owl-like ski caps is hand-knit and is embellished with natural wooden buttons. Besides this accessory, Snow Miku comes packaged with her snow bunny friend, Yukine, a removable scarf, and a snow ball plus three interchangeable facial expressions (energetic smile, playful giggle, and eyes shut). And since the theme is “Winter Sports,” she is equipped with skis, poles, snow goggles, and an extra body with a snowboard. This figure’s base special-themed as well, covered in white snow with blue flakes. You can see additional images of these accessories here.

Nendoroid Snow Miku: Snow Owl ver. costs ¥5,093 and stands about 100 millimeters tall.

figma Snow Miku: Snow Owl ver.‘s articulated joints allow for more poses. Like her Nendoroid counterpart, the figma comes with the rabbit Yukine, skis with poles, snow googles, and a snowboard. Her scarf and neck warmer are removable, if you would rather she pose without them. Her three packaged facial expressions are an energetic smile, a playful face, and a winking one. Note that figma Snow Miku’s stand is not themed like the Nendoroid’s is. You can get an overall look at her accessories here.

figma Snow Miku: Snow Owl ver. costs ¥5,556 and stands approximately 135 millimeters tall.

The Nendoroid and figma of Snow Miku: Snow Owl ver. aren’t available to purchase online yet but should be soon. But if you are in Japan for Wonder Festival 2016 Winter, limited amounts of each figure are available to purchase. There will be 3000 pieces of the Nendoroid and 2000 of the figma.

Do you plan on picking up one or both of these figures? Is there one you like better? Let us know in the comments!

It is a good time to be a Legend of Zelda collector. First, there was the news of GameStop carrying Nendoroid Link Majora’s Mask ver. Now, pre-orders are open for Good Smile Company’s figma Link: A Link Between Worlds ver., available in both standard and DX editions.

This figma stands approximately 110 millimeters in height. The figure is able to be posed in many different positions and is packaged with a stand. Link is also able to switch out facial expressions and comes with a smiling face as well as a serious one. Both editions include the Master Sword, Hylian Shield, and an illustrated sheet of Link when he is merged to a wall.

If all that is enough for you, you should be just fine with the Standard edition. But who wouldn’t want more Legend of Zelda goodness? That is where the DX edition comes in. The DX edition not only includes everything from the Standard edition but also packs in the Tornado Rod, Hookshot, a Bomb, a Baby Maiaimai (so cute!), a rupee, and a pot. Before you ask: no, you cannot smash the pot.

You can pre-order these figures now at the Good Smile Company online store. The Standard edition costs ¥5,000 while the DX edition will set you back ¥6,000. Keep in mind that orders are limited and will close on February 3 at 9p.m. Japan time. They are scheduled to release this August.

If you have a particular fondness for the way Nintendo’s Rockefeller Center-based Nintendo World Store is now, you had best visit before it closes for a remodel on January 19. The store will reopen on February 19 under a new name, Nintendo NY, and will feature an overhauled look.

The updated interior will have a 15-foot gaming screen, brand new demo units for both the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS, and additional surprise elements. The store’s new tagline, “Where everyone comes to play,” will be emblazoned on a bronze coin at the store’s entrance.

bronze_coin

The grand opening weekend for Nintendo NY, February 19 through 21, will host special activities, giveaways, plus the chance to see costumed versions of Mario and Luigi. Collectors take note: several exclusive souvenirs will be on sale this weekend only, such as limited editions shirts featuring Link or Mario.

Who’s planning on paying a visit to the updated Nintendo NY when it opens? I know I wish I had a plane ticket!

For many years, GameStop was strictly video games and strategy guides but more recently, they expanded to include card games, fashion accessories and collectible toys. The chain has now leveled up to include designer toys, such as Good Smile Company’s Nendoroid figures and Kotobukiya’s ArtFX+ line (like those two Star Wars figures). Two designer toys that we think you’ll be interested in were listed for pre-order on GameStop’s online store, a limited edition Fox McCloud statue along with Nendoroid Majora’s Mask Link.

119557b

The Fox McCloud statue stands eight inches tall and is made of hand-painted resin. The figure is limited 5,000 pieces. It costs $79.99 and is scheduled to release on February 9, 2016.

118219b

The Nendoroid Majora’s Mask Link is approximately 10 centimeters tall. Like all figures in Good Smile Company’s Nendoroid series, it comes with a bunch of accessories to customize Link’s look (you can get a better idea from this blog post by Good Smile Company’s Kahotan). The figure costs $46.99 and ships from Gamestop on March 15, 2016.

Are you playing on purchasing either of these figures? What do you think of GameStop’s new direction?
