Welcome back to Let’s Play Arcade!

The outline of this show is simple. We’ve got:

Two best friends.
One randomly selected Apple Arcade game.
Two fresh new semi-randomly selected beers (we basically just grab something new that we see on the shelf).

We don’t talk about the game at all before we record, so we’ll be learning each other’s thoughts and impressions live on air. At the end of each episode, we’ll also randomly draw the game for our next offering, so you’ll always know what’s coming up on the next adventure.

Part of the appeal of doing this show was just getting to “hang out” more often. Back in the day we’d be able to meet up for a beer, but because of where we live at this point, it just can’t really happen. For each episode of Let’s Play Arcade!, we’ll also be cracking open (and sort-of reviewing) a random beer as well. Neither of us really know anything about beer (or drink it all that often), so while we don’t know what anyone has to gain from us talking about them, we’ll see what happens!

Each episode will also feature an ‘after show’, where we’ll basically drivel on about whatever we feel like (stick around after the end theme if you want to listen).

This episode we jump into Lego: Builder’s Journey, a beautifully crafted puzzler with a touching, silent story. We also chat a lot about Coronavirus / COVID-19 — keep in mind that this was recorded about a month ago and John has since cancelled his plans for a road trip through the United States (and also the border is closed anyways).

Now available only on Apple Arcade! LEGO Builder’s Journey is a poetic puzzle that takes place in a LEGO brick world, brought to life with the most accurately rendered LEGO elements yet to feature on screens. Be taken through a breathtaking world filled with brick-by-brick effects, accompanied by a beautiful soundtrack.

This episode, John and Derek play a game about a sport they’re not familiar with… that doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the actual sport.

Swing bats and throw balls through the intertwined histories of humankind and cricket in this one button, physics-driven game.

Over a thousand years ago the human race teetered on the edge of extinction. Our ancestors were helpless against the mighty behemoths of the land. And then, salvation…the game of cricket was invented! Go alone, or take a friend, on a journey through the rich and exquisitely accurate history of cricket in Cricket Through the Ages.

Scott Thompson might be best remembered as a member of the cult comedy sketch group The Kids in the Hall or as his outrageous character Buddy Cole… but he’s about to get real with the Geekscapists. On this episode, Scott sits down to talk candidly about joining The Kids In The Hall, how comedy may have helped him come out of the closet, Cancel Culture and the dangers of a “woke” society and how the universe keeps trying to kill him. Along the way, we talk serious issues of deep-seeded trauma, school shootings, the war on terror and what it would take for Scott to kill Ellen Degeneres. We also answer a few of his questions! Enjoy!

It’s been over a decade since Jonah Hill and Michael Cera helped set the bar for teen comedies in Greg Mottola’s Superbad. And in a lot of ways, Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut feature Booksmart takes a similar vulgar-laden approach but infuses it with a refreshing female perspective that gives the film its own sense of identity. We’re all well aware of Wilde’s onscreen abilities but behind the camera and in tandem with the underrated talents of co-stars Kaitlyn Dever (Short Term 12) and Beanie Feldstein (Lady Bird), Booksmart serves as a fearlessly funny and welcome addition to the 2019 SXSW festival lineup.

It’s the day before graduation and best friends Amy (Dever) and Molly (Feldstein) are up to their usual shenanigans as they head to their last day of high school ever. But it’s here that the inseparable pair are reminded of their years-long failures, where Amy is still yet to be intimate with a female after “coming out” during sophomore year, and Molly’s all-work and no-play approach to being the Valedictorian hasn’t actually separated her college prospects from most other classmates. Yet, for these forever friends, tonight is different. Tonight is their final chance to live it up with no regrets before they embark on their separate futures.

Booksmart has no issues ushering in the laughs thanks to a well-used R-Rating filled with female masturbation jokes and other irreverent raunchiness. Refusing to masquerade as anything more than a female-centric buddy comedy, its easy to ignore the film’s disregard for purposeful character development. Instead, we’re guided down a hysterical series of obstacles and resolutions that unfold in an eerie familiar fashion. This direct parallel to the events in Superbad mildly spoils the onslaught of hilarity that ensues, but there’s enough laughter throughout to erase the unpleasantry. And much like elder comedy’s everlasting effect on the careers of Hill and Cera, don’t be shocked if Booksmart becomes a similar vessel that helps launch Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein into the mainstream. There’s something to be said for the film’s wading in familiar waters, but Olivia Wilde’s unapologetically racy and laugh-filled debut still stands as a winning comedic effort from this year’s festival lineup.

The romantic comedy, a genre born to rectify the stress and combativeness of date night decision-making. But in all of its easy-viewing fluff, occasionally one breaks through the mold to deliver something more. Whether it’s a truly romantic tale with affable characters with performers donning an uncanny onscreen chemistry, or perhaps just an elevated level of humor that’s relentless in its pursuit of laughter, the rare rom-com gem is a transcendent work that typically appeals to all. And we’re given all of that and so much more in Jonathan Levine’s (50/50 and Warm Bodies) emotionally pleasing and riotously funny new film, Long Shot.

Fred Flarsky (Seth Rogen) is a political journalist with conviction. His edgy writing style and brash wit make him a low-key internet mainstay until the company he works for is purchased by a ruthless media conglomerate. Forced to resign out of honor and dignity to his craft, Flarsky looks to drown his newly unemployed sorrows with his lifelong best friend (O’Shea Jackson Jr.). But as the rowdy pair of friends find their way into an upscale fundraising party, they cross paths with Flarsky’s former babysitter and first-crush, Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron), who also happens to be the current Secretary of State and a rising political star. Flarsky and Charlotte reconnect over some laughs and it isn’t long before she decides to bring him on board her staff as a speechwriter.  The two slowly start to develop feelings for one another but, as she gears up for a run at the presidency, it’s clear that Flarsky isn’t the optimal relationship choice for boosting her poll numbers.

Long Shot infuses robust comedic energy into a Cinderella-esque story with a role-reversal twist. And while Seth Rogen is hardly a belle of the ball, he makes for a root-able underdog in this savagely funny R-rated rom-com. His onscreen counterpart, Charlize Theron, trades her Atomic Blonde kicks and kill-scenes for a more reserved role. It’s a smooth and easy transition for such a rangy and adaptable talent that she is. On the other hand, we’re gifted the prototypical Seth Rogen role, a routine he hardly shies away from but consistently delivers to perfection. And if you haven’t been worn out by his comedy schtick already – something that I’m not sure I’ll ever get bored by – Long Shot is chock full of quintessential Rogen-style humor that hardly gives you time to settle from joke to joke. A lengthy and diverse list of co-stars keep hilarity flowing as O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton) absolutely steals the show whenever he enters the frame. As far as the romantic aspect of the film, Long Shot offers a relatable tale of forbidden love that’s neatly wrapped in a somewhat contrived, but certainly acceptable, political backdrop. Thankfully, the film doesn’t dive too deep into our volatile political extremes without attaching comical hysteria to it, which surely helps the movie stray from alienating certain types of audiences. Long Shot’s characters are warm, affectionate, earnest and downright vulgar, allowing for a healthy dose of edgy humor that’s counterbalanced brilliantly by a satisfying relationship story. I’m glad to say that Jonathan Levine returns to form with one of the finest rom-coms in years.

In 1959 We are introduced to 4 people:
Penny, a single mother, she regrets working the night shift and leaving her three children at home.
Harrison, a would-be singer, that suffers from stage fright.
Julia, a waitress that moved to the city to experience city life and to avoid getting married to her boyfriend John.
Milo, a small-time thief and tough guy that conned a young boy out of his grandfather’s stamps. He tried to steal them back got beat up by the guy who hired him.

They all ride the same bus that night and die because their bus driver Hal can’t keep his eyes off a sexy pair of legs. The 4 souls of Penny, Harrison, Julia, and Milo all enter Thomas Reilly while he is being born in the family car. Hal for some reason gets a pass and accends to heaven.

As the years pass Thomas is the only one you can see his ghost and they all form a deep bound. As the boy ages, he has problems because people think he’s weird. Thomas’s mother and father almost have him committed but the ghosts realize they are harming his life and make themselves invisible to Thomas. The abandonment causes young Thomas to avoid close relationships for the rest of his life, fearful that they, too, will leave him.

Twenty-seven years later we meet Thomas, now a ruthless foreclosure banker who refuses to open up to his devoted girlfriend Anne and lives on his car phone. Hal returns with his trolleybus. Because his irresponsibility ended four innocent lives, Hal has been condemned to convey spirits to the next life, and he has now come for his former passengers.

They reveal themselves to Thomas and he crashes his car. He wakes up in a hospital and he attempts to check himself into a psychiatric hospital, where a schizophrenic patient can see his ghost. This convinces Thomas that the spirits are real, but he is still angry with them for their abandonment and refuses to help them. The quartet convinces him by leaping in and out of his body during an important meeting and threatening further public humiliation until Thomas reluctantly agrees to help in order to finally be rid of them.

One by one the ghosts solve their unfinished business.
1. Milo steals back the stamps and gives them to the grown-up kid. However, after the burglary, a nervous Thomas encounters a police sergeant (who is ticketing his illegally parked car) and accidentally gets himself arrested, forcing Anne to bail him out.
2. Harrison uses Thomas’s body to sing the national anthem at a B.B. King concert. Anne is in the audience and gets mad at Thomas for skipping their date.
3. After which Thomas is arrested again by the same police sergeant, who Penny suddenly recognizes as her son. Thomas tells Billy the location of his long-lost sisters, and Billy is so overcome that he lets Thomas go with a warning after hitting his car.
4. Finally, Thomas and Julia write a letter to Julia’s boyfriend John in which she confesses her love for him, only to learn that John died several years before. At the same moment, the trolleybus returns to take Julia. Thomas protests that Julia’s business is still unresolved, but Julia realizes that her true business is Thomas, who is making the same mistake with Anne that she made with John. Thomas promises her that he will tell Anne his true feelings before it is too late, allowing Julia to depart.

Thomas invites Anne back to his apartment, where he tells her his fear of abandonment and his love for her. He gives her a heart-shaped keyring containing all his personal keys. Anne takes him back, then the two of them dance under the night sky were four new stars twinkle to show that Penny, Julia, Harrison, and Milo are finally at peace.

This weekend I saw The Disaster Artist and while I think it was a well made movie with good dramatic and comedic moments, it didn’t speak to me like it has for many others. It just felt like it wasn’t made for me which is weird because of my love of “So bad its good” cinema but not that weird since I’ve never seen The Room.

Yes, you read that correctly, I’ve never seen The Room. The man who hosts a podcast specifically about watching garbage films has never seen the so-called grand-daddy of them all. Many people find this shocking and to a certain extent I suppose I do too. Allow me to explain why I’ve avoided this film for over a decade.

The first big reason is because I’ve met & hung out with Tommy Wiseau on two different occasions. Neither time did I find him fun or charming. He struck me as an egotistical and cruel diva. This personality trait I believe they captured quite accurately in The Disaster Artist. The sheer fact that he is praised as an important cult figure has always rubbed me the wrong way because of these two interactions and for that reason I’ve always avoided the film.

I will say that it’s possible that I caught him on bad days. I have one friend who HATES Mick Foley because of a bad experience the only time he’d met him. Everyone else I’ve ever encountered who has met Foley has had nothing but kind words about him. So I’m open to the possibility it could be wrong place, wrong time. However if you can track down the episode of Geekscape from approximately 6 years ago you’ll see a lot of my issues.

The second reason is how I first really “saw” the movie. It was between my first and my second encounter with him. My friends showed me a very long (approximately 40 minute) episode of Nostalgia Critic about the movie. I’m not a fan of nostalgia critic, he seems like a good guy but his comedic style doesn’t really work for me. It’s basically the same reason I prefer the slightly less screamy We Hate Movies and Flop House podcast over How Did This Get Made. Angrily yelling everything doesn’t equal comedy for me.

Shortly after this, I would encounter someone (friend or stranger) quoting this movie at me damn near every week. It almost reminds me of how for a few years I just couldn’t watch Napoleon Dynamite because I had been overwhelmed with “your mom goes to college” and “numchuck skills” quotes.

Which leads into my final issue and really the main focus of this. There’s no way to say it without coming off like a hipster douchebag so I’ll just say it; It’s the most Mainstream version of “So Bad It’s Good”. It’s the Rocky Horror Picture Show of “It’s So Bad It’s Good”. It’s the Smells Like Teen Spirit of 90’s countdowns. It’s The Beatles. It’s all of those things.

That doesn’t make it a bad thing. I love all of those things. I adore the Beatles, Smells Like Teen Spirit is still a great song and Rocky Horror Picture Show is a blast. My problem is that So-Bad-It’s-Good films are a passion of mine. They’re something I adore, I love showing them to people, I love tracking them down and owning them.

Imagine if you encountered someone who exclusively listened to The Beatles, and only the Beatles, but claimed to be a music expert. Imagine someone who claimed to be a fan of Nirvana but only knew that single song. It’d be frustrating as hell.

The second we declare something “the best” anything; the search tends to end. The Room may be fantastic but is it the best? In a world full of Troll 2, Hard Ticket to Hawaii and Sleepaway Camp is it truly the best of the worst? That’s even just sticking with the more mainstream stuff. There’s some incredible and rarely talked about piece of cinema garbage.

Killer Workout has been one of my more recent loves. It’s a bafflingly film that’s more complex and confusing that necessary. There’s Nukie, the borderline unwatchable E.T. rip off. What about Invisible Maniac in which our titular character chucks someone to death with a hoagie (Something that has been a constant joke on the previously mentioned Flop House podcast) or The Guyver in which Jimmy Walker is grossly miscast as a rapping alien. The Uninvited … a film about a killer mutant cat puppet loose on a cruise ship is also a strong contender. Even this week on Shock Waves podcast the film The Evil Within was mentioned and sounds like a very promisingly terrible film. Don’t even get me started on Belly of the Beast starring Steven Seagal.

Don’t just be content with a poorly made drama from a mysterious and self-absorbed person. Explore what’s out there. Maybe instead of watching The Room for the 50th time, examine a film like S.I.C.K. (Serial Insane Clown Killer). And I? Well … I’ll stop bitching about a movie I’ve never seen and will finally watch it. This is just Part One. Tune in Next Week. I’ll be watching The Room for the first time and writing my thoughts.

Stay Tuned

It’s my pleasure to introduce the Geekscapists to Lauren and Katie of the K-Lo Sketch Show! I’ve been saying it for a long time Lauren and Katie are the two funniest people I know… and they’re also the most driven. Every month, they put on a brand new, 2-person improv, sketch and variety show from the ground up: the K-Lo Sketch Show! And it really is a pretty amazing show (which now regularly plays to a standing room only crowd)! On this episode, Katie, Lauren and I talk about the appeal of Macaulay Culkin, the recent eras of comedy films, Katie’s ‘Overwatch’ habits and Lauren’s past as a beauty queen and a variety of Disney princesses. We also discuss the K-Lo Sketch Show’s worst performance ever… and why they would do it all over again! It’s gonna get low, low, low, low, low on a new Geekscape so enjoy!

What’s worse than watching Body Melt and Street Trash for your podcast? One might think “watching another melt movie” is the answer, but it’s actually “watching another melt movie twice in one week because you didn’t realize it was going to be picked for the podcast and you already watched it after watching Street Trash,” which is just what Scott did with this week’s pick – 1977’s notoriously goofy The Incredible Melting Man! The plot is murkier than all the vanilla pudding used to make the effects in this film, but the guys muddle through as always. Come see the rings of Saturn with us and maybe we’ll even catch a glimpse of Uranus while we’re at it on another episode of Horror Movie Night!

Adam is MIA so Scott and Matt are forced to tackle John Carpenter’s end of the world obsession on our own. We discuss 1987’s Prince of Darkness until one of us ends up trapped in a mirror world with Alice Cooper and the Devil. You can only know which one of us gets sacrificed by listening to this week’s Horror Movie Night

We’re on the cusp of Halloween Weekend 2k17, kids, so we scrounged up a truly terrifying tale of thaumiel trickery to assail your aural appendices, a story of one child’s harrowing nightly encounters with Howie Mandel in his bedroom. That’s right, we’re talking 1989’s Little Monsters! This isn’t a good movie, but really, we don’t associate ourselves with those kinds of movies anyway, and Howie’s cocaine freakout performance pretty much fits right into our wheelhouse. Thrill to scenes of Mr. Mandel tempting fate to explode his heart and a child drink urine. It’s all here on this Halloweekend episode of Horror Movie Night!
