All this and more ONLY! on the Geekscape Games Podcast!

Games we played:

Courtney – Diablo 3,  Spy Party, Crypt of the Necrodancer

Derek – Red Dead 2, Fallout 76

Join Courtney, Derek,  and Jake as they discuss the last week in video games!

THIS WEEK:

Courtney tells you all about her magical vacation, but still can’t explain what’s the point of “Don’t Starve” despite the 100 hours she put into it. Derek waxes poetic about WWE 2k19 for Derek amounts of time. Jake had a chill week with fast cars and figuring out how not to die in “Don’t Starve Together”. Then everything sort of falls apart and we talk about lizard dicks and horse balls for longer than is healthy. And Shane wasn’t even here.

All this and more ONLY! on the Geekscape Games Podcast!

Games we played:

Courtney – Clawbert, Devious Dungeon, Diablo 3, Don’t Starve Together

Derek – WWE 2K19, Elder Scrolls Legends, Mario Party

Jake – Forza Horizon, Don’t Starve Together, Diablo 3 Season 15 (Double Bounties)

I’ve been really drawn to pixel-art style games lately; pretty much anything with sprite avatars catches my interest. The problem is a lot of the games with that art style aren’t super interesting. ‘Aground’ managed to catch my eye and keep my interest. It’s a side scroller survival game, but it has a lot of different mechanics that make the game stand out from other similar games.

I got to play the demo for 10-15 minutes. You play a person who has been shipwrecked on an island and has to collect resources, build shelter, gather and store food etc. to survive. First thing off the bat – you get to customize your character from gender, hair skin and eye colors, and clothes. I guess, you can customize it to an extent since they are pixel-sprites BUT it’s a hell of a lot more satisfying than character selection in ‘Sea of Thieves’.

I promise character customization is the key to the best game
Look it’s me!

You are then shown a quick reprise of your shipwrecking before you do a short tutorial of how to collect wood and food and progress through the story line. You meet different NPCs who help you along with quests (Let’s build a storage room!) but the cool thing about the NPCs on this island is that they don’t just sit there and deliver the same one-liners outside their designated area, they actually help you gather resources while you’re off doing different things around the island.

I didn’t progress very far through the story during my short time with the demo, but I definitely got hooked. I am a major fan of survival games like this, and was charmed with the art style. The game also has cool features like MOVING LEFT (I had to get a hint on that one), mining, and eventually, dragons!

Khaleesi or nah?
Are we fighting dragons or taming them – I need to know for science!

I think the best part of this game is its conception. After the release and huge disappointment of ‘No Man’s Sky’, David Maletz, the designer said “I can build a better game than that!” which eventually lead to the creation of Aground, which, while admittedly is very different from NMS, is a much much better game.

‘Aground’ is currently in Early Access on Steam and available for $10.

I have sunk more time than I would like to admit into turned based and real time strategy games. There was a dark time (or two) when all I would do after I woke up was eat, play Civilization… and go back to sleep. There are also those countless hours I’ve spent playing various RTS mobile games on my phone when I couldn’t sleep. So, when I saw Driftland from Star Drifters, I was intrigued to see just how it measured up against the other RTS style games I’ve played.

In Driftland you play as a mage, trying to rebuild your kingdom after a magical apocalypse, cobbling a new land together from floating islands. There are four playable races (humans, dwarves, wild elves, and dark elves), each with different strengths and weaknesses that affect gameplay. For example, dwarves are really good at geomancy, engineering, and resource use, but aren’t able to use dragons when they appear later in the game.

All races have basic skills that help you expand and explore the islands hidden around the map. You can lift the fog of war by using floating eyeball minions, move islands closer to build bridges, or setup a temporary portal to send out scouts to explore the islands and find resources.

Driftland draws a lot of parallels to Civilization in the best ways – scout, claim, build, mine resource, build armies, fight against other expanding kingdoms. Unlike Civilization and many other games I’ve played, you don’t have to worry about micromanaging your workers or ending your turn, which makes the game feel much more fast-paced, and allows you to focus on the bigger picture. Players have different avenues for achieving victory, either by conquering the world, or expanding and defending your kingdom faster than the other rival kingdoms on the map. The game features three different map sizes, with a small map consisting of 30 islands and a large map at 65.

It took me a few minutes to get used to the controls (okay, so like 10-15 but remember I’m bad), and I was only able to play for 30 or 40 minutes, but I could easily fall back into my hobbit hole days of just sitting and playing nothing but this game for hours. I was thoroughly impressed with this game, and its small (15 people!) team of developers. This game allows for so much variation in experience, between the race choice, map size, and random competing factions (of other races even), I simply don’t see this game growing stale.

Driftland is currently in early access on Steam for $20… which is totally reasonable, and totally worth it.

The full game should be released in the first quarter of 2019, with multiplayer (up to 6 players) and 4 campaigns available in addition to the single player option. Hopefully they will be able to expand to other platforms as well, as I could see this being a huge hit on the Switch.

Join Courtney and Derek as they process life post-SDCC and talk about this week in gaming!

 – I was nervous to do comic con this year. Even more nervous than last year when I got thrown in the mix last minute (more last minute than most things at SDCC). Last year, I had zero idea what I was getting into; I had never gone to any sort of convention, never done a real interview, or met with any industry people. I think I did a pretty good job of navigating not only my first convention, which is one of the largest in the world, but also a new city where I technically didn’t know anyone. I had never met anyone from Geekscape in real life (apart from Shane) until I got to the convention center the first day, which in itself was really nerve wracking.

Meeting new people ended up being the easy part. Derek, Natalie, Josh, Jon, Heidi, Gui and Zack ended up being just as kind and amazing as they were online – they made me feel like I was really a part of the family almost instantly.  The hardest part for me was all the walking, standing, and getting stepped on, which are difficult for most healthy people. But I’m not considered “healthy”.

If you’ve listened to the Geekscape Games Podcast, you may have heard me talk how I sometimes struggle with gaming because of my Rheumatoid Arthritis or RA. RA is an autoimmune disease, which means that my body’s immune system can’t quite distinguish between foreign cells, like bacteria, and cells in certain parts of my body, and so it ends up attacking itself. This mostly affects my joints, but can also affect any connective tissues in the body as well as some of the major organs. When my immune system attacks a joint, it’s called a “flare” which basically means the joint swells up, becomes warm to the touch, and causes a lot of pain. I have to take a pharmacy’s worth of medications to try and keep my condition in check, and things like stress, diet, illness, weather etc. can cause my condition to flare up. This also means that I’m also almost always tired. Imagine having the flu and that all over tired achy feeling, but that’s your normal everyday life. Some days are better than others, and I can move through my day more or less normally. But I’ve found those days to be more and more rare over the past 9 years since my diagnosis. Simple things most people don’t think of doing, like shaking hands,  can ruin my day if someone gets overzealous and grips my hand like it’s gonna run away, and mean that I can’t really use it the rest of the day for anything.

So imagine that being your baseline – kinda tired, kinda sore, and you haven’t even started your day at the con yet. Now try and navigate through a new place, pretty much alone, getting exposed to all sorts of germs (cons are super dirty people), and walking everywhere all the time. And if you’re not walkling, you’re standing, because you’re in a line, or waiting to walk, or there just isn’t anywhere to sit. I think I ended up averaging about 5 miles of walking each day of the convention. I completely wore out the brand new pair of shoes I had been advised to buy (thanks Shane!) and most of a bottle over OTC pain killers. I was completely wiped out for the next week when I got home, and picked up some sort of con crud that caused a lot of discomfort and stuck around almost until it was time for PAX West in September.

With all that in mind, I almost didn’t come to San Diego this year. I love seeing my Geekscapists and getting to meet cool people in video games and spend time with everyone, but I was afraid that my health wouldn’t be able to hold up or I would be short changing myself for the rest of my summer, sacrificing the next month or so for one week. I ultimately, obviously, decided to go, because I want to make sure that I use my good health times for times like this when I can make good memories, and share stories with others.

So this is that story. A girl at a con, who looks healthy and normal, but isn’t, trying to do as much as she can to do what she loves, with some of the people she cares about most. I’ll try and share some tips and tricks for others of you out there who also fight the good fight against invisible illnesses or other disabilities. Hopefully my story will help inspire you to go to a convention, or a concert, or a party when you’re unsure of whether or not you should because of your condition. There is no reason why we shouldn’t be out doing what we love because of something our bodies are doing.

We got this.

DC All Access host Jason Inman has joined forces with Operation Gratitude to give comic books to US military members through the Third Annual Jawiin Comic Book Drive.

Operation Gratitude sends 250,000+ individually addressed care packages to Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines deployed overseas, to their children left behind, and to New Recruits, Veterans, First Responders, Wounded Heroes and their Caregivers. Each package contains food, hygiene products, entertainment and handmade items, as well as personal letters of support.

The Jawiin Comic Book Drive has collected over 22,000 comics for Operation Gratitude in the past two years. This year, from November 1st through the 30th, Jason is looking to send another 22,000 comics for our service members. DC Publisher Dan Didio has already donated 10,000 comics to get the drive going!

If you’d like to donate any of new or good condition comic books, follow the steps below! Feel free to include letters or postcards along with your comic donations!

1. Fill out the donation form at https://www.operationgratitude.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Donor-Form_2017_OCT.pdf
Put “Jawiin Comic Drive for Soldiers” in Group Title and the comic drive email on the form. The rest of the form is pretty self-explanatory.
2. Box and ship the comics and the donation form to
Operation Gratitude
21100 Lassen St.
Chatsworth, CA 91311
Please include a donation form in EVERY box even if they’re part of the same donation. Sometimes cartons don’t all arrive at the same time.
3. Send a picture of your comics and the number of books you are donating to jawiincomicdrive@gmail.com.
(If you don’t send your number to the email, they will have an inaccurate count and the drive could fail. Let’s get these soldiers some comics for the new year!)

Let’s see how many comics we Geekscapists can muster!

If you missed the announcement of the epic BoxLunch Funko Pop collaboration of a new Tina Funko Pop you should totally go read about that.

Just to recap, BoxLunch will be donating 11 meals to Feeding America, an organization that works to bring healthy food to 46 million people across America. BoxLunch donates a meal for every $10 spent in their stores and online. Feeding America also supports programs that improve food security, educates the public about the problem of hunger; and advocates for legislation that protects people from going hungry. Individuals, charities, businesses and government all have a role in ending hunger. Feeding America is also working to help those affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria.

No waitress was harmed in the taking of this photo.

Geekscape was lucky enough to receive one of the BoxLunch Tina Funko Pop’s signed by Bob’s Burgers creator, Loren Bouchard, and we’re giving her away to a lucky Geekscapist!

How do you enter? Simply comment on our Geekscape Facebook post with your own burger creation until midnight PST, September 29, 2017. The Geekscape staff will go through and pick their top 3 burgers, and then let the Geekscape community vote on the winner!

One entry per person, you must have an original burger (no digging through the Bob’s Burger wiki!). Good luck ‘Scapists!
