Join Courtney, Derek,  and Jake as they discuss the last week in video games!

THIS WEEK:

Courtney tells you all about her magical vacation, but still can’t explain what’s the point of “Don’t Starve” despite the 100 hours she put into it. Derek waxes poetic about WWE 2k19 for Derek amounts of time. Jake had a chill week with fast cars and figuring out how not to die in “Don’t Starve Together”. Then everything sort of falls apart and we talk about lizard dicks and horse balls for longer than is healthy. And Shane wasn’t even here.

All this and more ONLY! on the Geekscape Games Podcast!

Games we played:

Courtney – Clawbert, Devious Dungeon, Diablo 3, Don’t Starve Together

Derek – WWE 2K19, Elder Scrolls Legends, Mario Party

Jake – Forza Horizon, Don’t Starve Together, Diablo 3 Season 15 (Double Bounties)

After a logo/trademarking move, it looks like we have full confirmation. Gwent, the fictional card game from The Witcher series is getting its own release. Check out the announcement trailer below.

When the leak first came out, and what the trailer kind of implies at the start, the consensus was that this was going to be an analogue release. So when the announcement came out today that it was going to be an Xbox One / PC title, excitement soared.

Gwent will be a free to play game (with inevitable microtransactions and expansions). It looks like CD Projekt Red wants to go after that Hearthstone money.

Check out the press release, and instructions how to sign up for the beta, below!

In GWENT, you’ll clash with your friends in fast-paced duels that combine bluffing, on-the-fly decision making and careful deck construction. The game is played over a best-of-three series of rounds, as players unleash their hand by slinging spells and diverse units with special abilities and use clever tricks to deceive their opponents.
Sign up for the Closed Beta here today!
GWENT will be available at release for Xbox One, PC and PlayStation 4, GWENT is a free to play game that puts you, not your cards, in the center of the action.

Briefly: We’re now in the final third of 2016’s first month, and Microsoft has just revealed the latest Xbox 360 titles to be added to the Xbox One’s backwards compatibility list.

Nope, Alan Wake still isn’t available, but some stellar titles did make the list this month (like The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings). Here are all 10 games that are backwards compatible as of now.

-The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings
-Sam & Max Save the World
-Aegis Wing
-Counter-Strike: GO
-Age of Booty
-Space Giraffe
-Soulcalibur
-Skullgirls
-Jeremy McGrath’s Offroad
-Small Arms

The company has also revealed a big change to the way that backwards compatible titles will become available. Previously, new titles were revealed once per month (as with the list above), but going forward they’re set to simply ‘release titles as they become available, rather than a set monthly launch date’.

Oh, and did I mention that until February 5th, you can get The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings for free? Yep, you can head right here to download the acclaimed title.

Briefly: I literally can’t even.

The Witcher 3 is probably the best RPG that I’ve ever played (or at least, way, way up there). I’ve put more time into it than any other game in recent memory (50+ hours so far), and I’m not anywhere near completing the story, let alone all of the endless amazing side quests or Gwent challenges.

Apparently, I better get on it. Following the endless stream of free DLC and endless notable updates (thanks again to CD Projekt Red for adding in a colorblind mode), the first proper expansion for the title has officially been revealed.

Subtitled Hearts of Stone, the expansion will deliver “10 hours of new adventures that introduces new characters, powerful monsters, unique romance, and a brand new storyline shaped by player choices. The expansion also introduces a brand-new system of Runewords that significantly affects gameplay. Each Runeword will impact different aspects of in-game mechanics, allowing players to experiment with various strategies and tactics.”

The expansion will launch digitally on October 13th for a cool $19.99. Incredibly enough, collector’s will also “be able to purchase a special, limited boxed edition of Hearts of Stone (SRP $19.99) available at selected retailers worldwide. The box contains a digital download code for the expansion, two masterfully crafted physical decks of Gwent, the card game set in the world of The Witcher, as well as a detailed manual explaining the rules. With two unique sets of cards, Monsters and Scoia’tael ready to go, you and your friends can now engage in tactical combat on a grand scale outside of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt!”

Freaking real Gwent cards. I’m in!

Take a look at the trailer for The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone below, and let us know just how excited you are!

Briefly: If you’ve listened to the last couple of episodes of Geekscape Games (here and here, it’s good, we promise… maybe), you’ll know just how enamoured I’ve become with The Witcher 3 over the past couple of weeks. The game comes in a noteworthy physical package that surprised the hell out of me, and it’s held my interest more than any other RPG in as long as I can remember (even more than Ni No Kuni did). In the short time that the game has been out, the developer has released numerous patches improving performance, adding content, and even creating a colourblind mode than I am so f

It seems as though a ton of other people have fallen in love with the game as well, as CD Projekt Red has revealed that The Witcher 3 has sold over 4 million copies in just two weeks.

CD Projekt Red co-founder Marcin Iwiński released the following message today on the company’s official blog:

May 19th was a crucial date for all of us here at CD PROJEKT RED — we released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, our open world role-playing game that we had been hard at work on for over 3 years. Since day one, you have given us tons of positive feedback and support — the sheer volume of emails we’ve gotten since launch simply congratulating us for our efforts is both epic and heartwarming, and I wish every developer comes to have such a fantastic community. In terms of media reception, we’re really humbled by the scores the game has received all around the world. With an average of 90+ on every platform, Wild Hunt is our dream coming true.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the four million gamers worldwide who bought The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in the first two weeks from launch. Four million RPG fans spending their hard-earned money on our game is a sign that we did something right, and you can be sure that we’ll harness all that positive energy and make the upcoming expansions worthy of the grand adventure that you’re telling us Wild Hunt already is! Until then, keep on enjoying Wild Hunt, do not forget to grab your weekly set of free DLCs, and stay tuned for constant updates and enhancement to the game we are continuously working on.

Dandelion once said to Geralt that the world is changing, the sun is setting, and vodka’s running out — go, play, and have fun!

The Witcher 3 is an incredible experience, and I’m extremely glad to see the company finding success. Pick it up if you haven’t yet, and if you have, be sure to let us know how you’re liking it so far!

Briefly: It’s not often that I get to pick up a game at retail. Working (over) full time leaves me little time for gaming, and I’ve all but replaced my habit of buying games that I’ll never play with buying Amiibo that I’ll never use. It’s (arguably) more expensive, but at least they’re holding their value at this point instead of depreciating faster than a new car.

Yep, that's my wall.
Yep, that’s my wall.

Today, I picked up CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher 3. Somehow, the game (series) has slipped under my radar for all these years; It wasn’t until reading the universal praise of the latest game (including Gamespot awarding it the 9th perfect score that the publication has ever given), that I finally started looking into it. The game looks incredible, and though I’m unsure just when I’ll have an opportunity to really delve into it, I simply had to support the company.

When I unwrapped The Witcher 3‘s physical package (the standard edition by the way), I was greeted with a more comprehensive amount of content than most special editions include. It was so noteworthy, in fact, that I had to write about it.

See, most games today come with nothing. Reversible covers are cool but rare, physical manuals are all but nonexistent, and if you’re lucky you’ll get a single piece of paper advertising some inevitable map pack or DLC. The lack of manuals or any additional content has made the switch to digital more and more attractive over the years, but the fact that I often play my games once and then trade them in has been the only thing keeping me buying physical copies. I’m so, so happy that I purchased The Witcher 3 physically however, as this is what it came with:

That’s a lot of extra content, for a game that takes 100+ hours to complete, for the exact same price as every other new game that releases.

The first thing you’ll notice when you open the package? The heartfelt ‘Thank you’ note that makes you want to give these guys all of your money:

Thanks

In case it’s tough to see from the photos above, The Witcher 3 also includes a map of the Northern Realms, a cardboard sleeve, a soundtrack CD, and The Witcher Universe Compendium (containing a ton of useful info on the characters and previous events, AKA a physical manual). Inside the compendium you’ll also find a download code for the first issue of Dark Horse Comics’ The Witcher: House of Glass comic book, and a code for a new hero in The Witcher Battle Arena mobile game.

Again, this was all from the regular edition of the game. I’m still having a hard time believing it.

Have you picked up The Witcher 3 yet? What do you think of the game so far?

Polish game Dev CD Projekt Red appears to have knocked it out of the park AGAIN! The third in the series for their next level open world RPG, The Witcher, has just has just blown the gaming community’s’ collective mind. The CG in the cinematic is absolutely astounding. Please pump up it up to 1080P and let it buffer.

From the release:

CD Projekt RED is proud to present The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt “Killing Monsters” cinematic trailer to the public for the first time, offering a thrilling glimpse into the morally ambiguous universe of Geralt of Rivia.

“Killing Monsters” portrays the cruel and gritty world of The Witcher and foreshadows the mature mood of the upcoming story-driven RPG, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, set for release on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2014.

Today It was announced, from the MYSTERIOUS conference in Warsaw what CD Projekt RED is up to. Their next game will be an RPG that uses the Cyberpunk interface system.

The studio says this game, set in a neo-future world, will be for the mature player who expects to be treated seriously. That has a touch of “Lost In Translation” but I believe the meaning holds true; Gamers don’t want another Mass Effect 3 to happen.  Said to be non linear and very open world with a over arching story, this new game, if anything like the Witcher series, should be amazing.

Now about this Cyberpunk interface you ask? What does this mean for players? Let me break it down.

The game Cyberpunk is a pen and paper role playing game set in a “neo-future world”. The author, Mike Pondsmith, was brought on board by CD Projekt RED to incorporate his game mechanic, the Interlock System.  Interlock  features character development through skills instead of stat development.

Now I’ve never played Cyberpunk before, but Mike Pondsmith was responsible for the character leveling system for The Matrix Online, which featured development through skills instead of stats. I feel that his system is perfect for the setting this game will be in.

CD Projekt RED announced some great things at today’s Spring Conference about The Witcher series that was streamed live on Ustream for all to watch. Besides showing off gameplay from the Xbox 360 version of The Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition which comes out on April 17th, here are some highlights from the conference.

iOS users will get an interactive motion comic starring the witcher himself, Geralt. It will be released free for both iPhone and iPad on April 17th. Another thing for the Apple crowd is you can now buy and play The Witcher: Enhanced Edition on your Mac through Steam. As with other PC games getting a Mac version on Steam, if you own a copy of The Witcher on Steam for PC already, you get the Mac version for free. If you’re not a person that has PC and Mac in the same household, you can pay the $9.99 for it now on Steam.

We all know how backing up your data is important and CD Projekt Red and GOG.com seems to agree with offering a free back-up digital copy of The Witcher 2 to anyone who purchases the game. No matter where you bought it from or when. On April 17th, point your web browser of choice to http://www.gog.com/en/page/witcherbackup and sign into your account to have your back-up copy waiting.

PC gamers that already have The Witcher 2 will get access to the “Enhanced Edition” update on April 17th with preloading the update starting April 11th.

The biggest thing to come out of CD Projekt RED’s conference was their crazy campaign that will give out 1000 copies of The Witcher 2 on Xbox 360 to “enthusiast” reviewers. Simply go to http://thewitcher.com/review and fill out the form. CD Projekt RED will contact you a few days later. It’s that easy. Everyone thinks they can write better reviews than the paid professionals. Now’s your time to prove it.

Not to be left out of all the fun, GOG.com had some news to drop as well. From the developers of Machiarium comes a new title, Botanicula.

Botanicula will release on April 19th for $9.99

GOG.com will also start offering “Premium Edition” games with some newer titles to arrive on their site starting with Assassin’s Creed: Director’s Cut and Heroes of Might & Magic V Bundle that includes both expansion packs. Just like the older games on GOG.com, you will get a ton of stuff with the Premium Edition games from official art books to soundtracks and more.

Finally, the reason why GOG.com is probably loading slow for everyone. For the next 48 hours, you can get Fallout for free. If you ever wanted to see how the series got its start, go get your free copy now.

The fabulous folks over at GOG (Good Old Games) have released a STAGGERING amount of news today regarding their deal with CD Projekt RED and their spring lineup.

Two weeks before the release of Witcher II: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition, GOG and CD Projekt Red, the Polish developer of the Witcher series, wll stream a live event. The official press release says:

“Just two weeks before we launch Enhanced Edition on Xbox 360 and PC,
and we’re doing something that is truly extraordinary. I don’t think
anyone’s ever done something like this for their gamers. We have
prepared pretty big surprises for gamers of all kinds, and we think
that you will enjoy them a lot. If games are your passion, watch our
conference,” said Marcin Iwinski, Joint CEO of CD Projekt RED S.A.

Witcher II: Assassins of Kings is slated to ship internationally on May 17th. So make sure to check out GOG.com two weeks prior for the live stream.

If you are unfamiliar with GOG, let me bring you up to speed. They are a revolutionary group of lads and lasses that offer DRM-FREE digital distribution of games. They’re know for offering games that have been long out of print. It’s the only place to get a copy of my favorite PC FPS of all time, SHOGO.

Starting with Witcher II and Legend of Grimrock (GOG is the only digital distrubution service offering preorders of Legend of Grimrock, and they are putting a 20% discount on top of that.) they will start moving out of the “Classic Game” market and begin offering DRM-FREE new releases! Along with the new stuff, you can get copies of Trine and The Whispered World as well.

So what does this mean for us PC gamers? Well GOG has always been a nuisance to their competitors but never really offered anything for the likes of STEAM, ORiGIN or Direct2Drive to really be worried about. Now though, with the advent of true DRM-FREE release day available games, it is really putting GOG up there in the same boat as STEAM. We’ve all been there, internet goes down, moving or leaving on a jet plane and no access to the Steamcloud and all those games out of reach, hopefully this push by GOG will make STEAM and the others to offer a bit of change.
