A day before Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, the first game in the action RPG published by Nintendo and developed by Team Ninja is set to hit shelves, we learned about the first four newcomers emerging from the shadows. During Marvel’s games panel at San Diego Comic Con, it was revealed that Moon Knight, Punisher, Blade and Morbius would be making up the Marvel Knights DLC pack, the first of three scheduled packs set for the game’s post-launch future.

Fans will have plenty to be excited about with these reveals. Moon Knight and Blade are both returning from past games. Blade has been largely out of the spotlight since becoming the first Marvel movie poster child in the late 90’s while Moon Knight has never really had the spotlight at all, so it’s great to see them coming back. However, with Blade being one of the few exceptions, the past games generally strayed away from showcasing the more violent heroes of the Marvel universe, which is why seeing Punisher and Morbius in the game is a welcomed surprise. Morbius in particular has a movie right around the corner, so this can be a great way to acquaint audiences with The Living Vampire before it releases.

The Marvel Knights pack leads the Expansion Pass content priced at $19.99 and includes the previously announced Fantastic Four and X-Men packs. Alongside Loki being shown as part of the base roster, Cyclops and Colossus were also revealed as free DLC in August. This opens the doors wide open as to who might be featured in the paid packs. The Fantastic Four pack on the other hand… Not so much. Still, we’re thrilled to see these characters join the 36 character cast, some of which impressed us when we got to play the game at E3. This is looking like a brawler that Switch owners won’t want to miss.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is launching exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on July 19.

Last week, we learned about the first of the three houses featured in the upcoming Fire Emblem title for Nintendo Switch. With only two weeks until the game releases on July 26, we’re being introduced to the second house of the three. As those who “walk the true path of justice”, the chivalrous Blue Lions walk the straight path towards strength.

Dimitri, the prince of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus, leads this band of straight laced fighters. Flanked by Dedue, Dimitri’s servant who doubles as a deadly combatant, Sylvain, Dimitri’s skirt chasing childhood friend and Ingrid, a knight to the core who exemplifies the principles of her kingdom, this group of warriors fit the medival theme pretty strongly. As the much more traditional group compared to the Black Eagles, the Blue Lions might be the house for those with a strong moral compass and a penchant for sword fighting.

With the Golden Deer waiting in the wings, it won’t be long until it’s time to choose where our allegiance lies when Three Houses finally launches. Meet the Blue Lions in the video below and let us know who has won your support so far.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is already loaded with hours of content if the Nintendo Treehouse presentation at E3 is anything to go by. Yet somehow, it’s looking like we’re about to get much more courtesy of a nearly year long expansion pass.

Nintendo has announced that the upcoming game in their storied strategy RPG series will receive four batches of DLC between its July 26 release date through April 2020. Promising new maps, costumes and playable characters, specific details were few. Past games have brought in protagonists from past games, enemies and NPC’s that wouldn’t be usable otherwise, as well as a combination of challenge maps and easy maps meant for easy leveling for your units. The idea of playing as Marth, Celica Lyn or Ike with the new Switch graphics engine sounds incredible, so I’m hoping this trend continues.

For anyone who pre-purchases or purchases the expansion pass, these players will unlock a special costume for both the male and female versions of Byleth, the main character of the game. As professors at the Officer’s Academy, this formal wear helps the leads blend into such a formal role.

If you’re having trouble on deciding which house you’ll ultimately align with, the Black Eagles have also received an introduction video presenting their school of nobles and mages. Led by the future emperor of the Adrestian Empire, Edelgard, classmates such as the cool headed Hubert, the foreign student, Petra and the lazy crest researcher Linhardt round out some of the units we’ll be introduced to. Check out their introductions in the trailer below.

Which house calls your name at this point? And what are you hoping we’ll see in the Expansion Pass? Let us know in the comments!

Continuing their partnership with Nintendo, Bethesda is releasing Wolfenstein: Youngblood, the follow-up to the acclaimed Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, day and date with the other versions. Their previous shooters sacrificed visuals for performance on Nintendo’s platform, but with the cooperative aspect of the game being introduced this time around, would it still be able to hold up? This was the question I was hoping to answer walking into the E3 demo of the Switch version.

Playing as the daughters of BJ Blazkowicz, the Nazi fighting protagonist of the previous games, the pair are seeking out clues to the whereabouts of their missing father. Continuing the family tradition, they accomplish this by gunning down as many Nazis as possible, only this time with a wider range of technology thanks to advancements made in the 20 years or so between games. Each girl gets their own customizable loadout that can be tailored towards stealth or direct combat, and a second player can jump in and out at any point during he mission locally. When playing solo, the CPU did a good job of performing as a competent partner.

Once in a mission, the team can decide to take on challenges together or work towards separate goals. For example, one can solve puzzles or look for items while the other clears the way by taking down enemies. Larger environment led to greater freedom, but the team had to reunite when either advancing the story or moving to a new section of the map. Using an RPG-like health system, each weapon did a certain amount of damage to enemies and their HP determined whether or not they would go down. In other words, a headshot wouldn’t necessarily mean the bad guy was going depending on the situation. Still, it’s little to worry about when you’ve got a partner at your side.

Regarding the Switch version, despite the larger rooms and two-player format, it performed about as well as the previous Bethesda shooters on the platform. Up close, the character models and environments looked rough, and the frame rate looked below the usual 30 FPS, but the game stayed consistent with no noticeable performance dips in handheld mode. While the concessions made are obvious, they didn’t get in the way of delivering an action packed shooter experience on a handheld.

Grab a friend and go Nazi hunting! Nintendo owners will have what’s shaping up to be a strong co-op FPS to look forward to this summer when Wolfenstein: Youngblood releases on July 26.

Ever since X-Men Legends surprised gamers 15 years ago, we’ve known that multiplayer superhero action RPG’s can be amazing. And yet, as Marvel has progressively permeated the worldwide public consciousness with phenomenons like Avengers: Endgame, we haven’t seen a new game since the original Iron Man film released. With Activision losing the license years ago and Square Enix’s Avengers game seemingly in limbo until recently, imagine how surprising it was to see that a third Marvel Ultimate Alliance was on its way. Not only that, but it was being published by Nintendo and developed by Team Ninja (of Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive fame) exclusively for the Switch! But the developer and platform was not the only thing that’s changed in the last decade, with a roster of characters who have since risen to prominence. But most importantly… is Jessica Jones in the game!?

The answer is yes… in a way. Like the past games, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 allows players to put together a dream team of four. With over 30 Marvel heroes and villains to choose from, the roster features mainstays like Wolverine, Captain America and Thor joining up with newly prominent heroes like Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Even Elsa Bloodstone made the cut! But unfortunately, while Jessica is technically in the game, it was only as an NPC, directing the playable characters towards their fight against The Hand. It’s better than nothing, but with Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Daredevil all playable, it would have been great to get the old Netflix team back together. Designing Jessica based on Kristen Ritter’s portrayal just feels like teasing at this point.

Each character has unique sets of skills, like the ability to fly, shoot or swing depending on the hero. As they progress, each earns experience through combat that leads to developing unique combat skills that can damage large waves of enemies or concentrate large attacks into a single strike. As a top-down brawler, the team can’t get too far from each other. The lack of freedom is made up for by filling the environments with plenty of enemies to defeat, which can be done in increasingly flashy ways thanks to the team up attacks. Once enough enemies are defeated, players can trigger an ultimate screen clearing attack, which can be amplified by having their partners activate it at the same time. With that said, while Ultimate Alliance 2 had some really cool specialized team attacks like Captain America reflecting Iron Man’s energy blasts towards enemies, the third game’s moves seemed more generic. Here’s to hoping that the final version will have more specialized attacks. Oh, and if you happen to be short on friends, you’ll be able to swap between CPU controlled heroes on the fly.

Overall, despite the change in developer and the 10 year layoff, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 seems to be in good hands. There are some concerns with the visual quality of some of the characters that the cell shaded look can’t mask, while crowded areas did lead to some slight slowdown, but the time until the final release might be enough to put down that extra layer of polish. Be ready to assemble when the game launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch on July 19.

Alongside as many features and reveals as one could fit in 15 minutes, the Pokemon Sword and Shield Nintendo Direct showed off a surprisingly large amount of Pokemon spanning the entire series. Naturally, the most exciting part of exploring a new region is the new Pokemon waiting to be discovered. Check out the 10 new species highlighted throughout the Direct, everything we know about them so far and screenshots that give us a closer look at our debuting partners.

New Pokemon:

  • Grookey (grass starter)

Category: Chimp Pokémon
Type: Grass
Height: 1′
Weight: 11 lbs.
Ability: Overgrow

The stick that Grookey holds, originally from the forest where groups of Grookey live, is imbued with special powers after being exposed to the energy within Grookey’s body. Its green fur creates energy from sunlight. When Grookey drums with its stick near wilted flowers and leaves, they regain their color.

  • Scorbunny (fire starter)

Category: Rabbit Pokémon
Type: Fire
Height: 1′
Weight: 9.9 lbs.
Ability: Blaze

Scorbunny uses its powerful legs to confuse and disorient its opponents by running and jumping around them. Because the soles of its feet can become very hot, Scorbunny’s kick can burn and damage opponents, too. With a sac in its chest containing viscous fire energy, Scorbunny can increase its heart rate and body temperature by running around. This awakens the true power of its fire energy and greatly increases its physical abilities.

  • Sobble (water starter)

Category: Water Lizard Pokémon
Type: Water
Height: 1′
Weight: 8.8 lbs.
Ability: Torrent

When Sobble touches water, its body changes its pattern and color, allowing it to blend into its surroundings. A rather timid Pokémon, Sobble will secrete the water within its body like sweat and disappear into its surroundings when nervous or embarrassed. With tears that are as potent as a hundred onions, Sobble will start to bawl if it feels threatened, spreading its tears around the area and causing everyone around it to start crying uncontrollably. Sobble will then use this distraction as a chance to escape.

  • Wooloo

Category: Sheep Pokémon
Type: Normal
Height: 2′
Weight: 13.2 lbs.
Ability: Fluffy / Run Away

The white fur that covers Wooloo’s body grows throughout its life and will fully grow back in three months even if it has been completely shorn. The fur is used for clothing, carpets, and other goods and is very popular as a specialty product of the Galar region. Wooloo live as a herd and mimic the actions of their Trainer or herd leader. They dislike conflict, and if they need to escape from enemies, they will simply roll away.

  • Gossifleur

Category: Flowering Pokémon
Type: Grass
Height: 1′4″
Weight: 4.9 lbs.
Ability: Cotton Down / Regenerator

Gossifleur prefers land with clear water and air. Its pollen has a healing effect and is commonly used as a folk medicine remedy and made into a tea given to children in the Galar region when they are ill. Gossifleur travels over long distances by getting blown along by the wind. It controls the direction of its travels by twisting its body and petals.

  • Eldegoss (Gossifleur’s evolution)

Category: Cotton Bloom Pokémon
Type: Grass
Height: 1′8″
Weight: 5.5 lbs.
Ability: Cotton Down / Regenerator

When Gossifleur evolves into Eldegoss, its head becomes covered in thick cotton fluff. This cotton fluff serves as a cushion that helps to protect Eldegoss’s head from damage. The tiny seeds attached to the cotton fluff are said to be highly nutritious and beneficial to both people and Pokémon. Eldegoss spreads these seeds throughout the region, making the soil of the Galar region rich in nutrients.

  • Drednaw

Category: Bite Pokémon
Type: Water/Rock
Height: 3′3″
Weight: 254.6 lbs.
Ability: Strong Jaw / Shell Armor

The jagged fangs of the Bite Pokémon Drednaw are strong and sharp enough to bite through rock and iron. Though it has a heavy shell, its well-developed muscles allow it to move quickly. Drednaw is known to be extremely aggressive, so it takes a skilled Trainer to tame and handle this Pokémon. It seems that some Trainers will release Drednaw back into the wild once they discover they can’t handle it.

  • Corviknight

Category: Raven Pokémon
Type: Flying/Steel
Height: 7′3″
Weight: 165.3 lbs.
Ability: Pressure / Unnerve

It is said that Corviknight is the strongest Pokémon living in the skies of the Galar region. It can often be seen fearlessly soaring through the air. Many say that any Pokémon foolish enough to challenge Corviknight are sent running with just a sharp glare and cry from this fearsome Pokémon. Because Corviknight possess superb flying skills and high intelligence, many of them work for the company called Galar Taxi and help transport people from town to town.

  • Zacian (Pokemon Sword legendary)

???

Zacian’s attacks are so graceful that its movements captivate opponents. Holding what appears to be a sword in its mouth, Zacian’s shining blade can cut through anything.

  • Zamazenta (Pokemon Shield legendary)

???

With majestic movements and what appears to be a shield covering its body, Zamazenta can turn back any attack and overwhelm any opponents that dare face it.

If we consider that the new starters will have three forms and that the missing forms of the returning Pokemon will make appearances, we’re already slightly over 100 different species of Pokemon confirmed in less than 20 minutes! Considering Sun and Moon ended up at about 800 Pokemon in total, it’s looking like trainers are going to have more than enough to discover when Sword and Shield release for the Nintendo Switch on November 15. What are the standouts so far, which returning Pokemon were you happy to see and which ones do you hope make it into the base regions? Let us know in the comments!

We at Geekscape Games never miss the chance to try out the newest games, so when we were fortunate enough to be invited by Nintendo to preview their holiday games, we made sure to be there!

After being announced, Pokemon Let’s Go has been a source of controversy with dedicated fans of the series. Leaning into Pokemon Go in terms of game play and connectivity, restricting the game’s roster to the original 151 Pokemon, and serving as a remake of a game that’s already been remade are just some of the concerns players have had. With the lack of traditional battles against wild Pokemon, online trades being impossible for the first time in over a decade, and an overall simplified version of an already simple game, the concerns were warranted. Fortunately, after playing the game for ourselves, we found that the blend of Go mechanics with a core Pokemon game makes for a promising spinoff that will do well to hold us over while we wait for the next main entry next year.

Exploring Viridian Forest showed instantly that the graphical upgrade makes this old environment look new, with random encounters being replaced with Pokemon on the field. The colored rings around them let you know how big or small they will be, while using berries once you encounter them will alter the difficulty of the catch or the rewards that come with it. Just like Pokemon Go, catching is determined by throwing the ball at the Pokemon, with additional point bonuses depending on whether or not you throw it within the progressively shrinking ring around them. Since battles aren’t possible in the wild, all Pokemon in your party get EXP just for catching, with bonuses being attributed to the previously mentioned timed throws, by catching them on the first throw, or if your throw was perfectly synchronized with your partner when playing with the jump in / jump out co-op mode. When encountering trainers however, the game was much more traditional, with the standard four attack setup per Pokemon with various strengths and weaknesses depending on the types of the Pokemon battling. Playing co-op almost felt like cheating when combat would turn into a two-on-one beatdown.

Our 11 minutes with the game was brief, but what we found was the foundation of a worthy entry for the long-running series. Check out our game play video below, and let us know what you think!

Additionally, here’s some direct capture footage of Let’s Go Eevee, courtesy of Bradley Yoshiller from GoNintendo.com! Which version are you all going with? Game play starts at the 3 minute mark.

Did you ever use cardboard boxes to make forts, costumes, and other things when you were younger?

If so, Nintendo has just announced the perfect building kit for you. Meet Nintendo Labo for Nintendo Switch. As mentioned, Nintendo Labo is a new initiative by Nintendo to produce building kits for some of their more experimental Switch ideas. The accessory is set to launch this April 20th with 2 SKU’S. The first one is a Variety Kit, which includes many different types of projects ranging from Pianos to fishing rods, motorcycles, and even more! The second package is the Robot Kit, which has you assembling a suit where you can take control of a giant transforming robot (very similar to the canceled Wii U title Project Giant Robot.)

The Variety Kit will be sold for $70, while the Robot Kit will go for a pretty steep $80. It’ll be interesting to see how successful or not this will be in the market. Nintendo is no stranger to console peripherals whether they be good or bad. If a success, it’ll be fun to see what other ideas Nintendo has for Labo in the future. If it fails, it’ll have been a fun experiment. Regardless, this is a very creative way of using the Switch and Joycons outside of just its normal functionality. Check out the announcement trailer below. Are you going to pick up Nintendo Labo?

One of the most inventive games to come out in the past decade would have to be the Scribblenauts series. Created in 2009 for the DS by Jeremiah Slaczka and 5th Cell, the game was a breakout hit for WB Games and spawned 3 sequels, one of which included the ability to summon anyone from the DC universe.

Ever since 2013, the series has been on a bit of a hiatus, but it looks like that’s finally over. This morning WB Games announced Scribblenauts Showdown for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PS4 with a release date of March 6th. While the game isn’t a traditional adventure, it still retains what makes Scribblenauts such a unique series. throughout the 25+ mini-games in the package, players will still have access to the over 35,000-word library that fans have come to know and love. Also featured in the game is a character creator and a Sandbox mode more reminiscent of the original games.

Even if it’s not a main series title, it’s still great to see that Scribblenauts hasn’t been forgotten and just tossed into a bin of abandoned IP’S. What do you think of Scribblenauts Showdown? Are you interested in trying it out, or are you holding out for a more traditional game in the series? Check out the announcement trailer below.

A remastering of Dark Souls for the Nintendo Switch has been one of the worst-kept secrets in about the last year of gaming.

As early as the original announcement trailer for the console, rumors started that From Software had their hands on early dev kits for the console and were very impressed at how well their games could run on the system. Flash forward finally to this month with Nintendo’s mini direct, and the cat has finally been let out of the bag. Dark Souls Remastered is officially making its way to the Xbox One, PS4, PC, and of course, the Nintendo Switch on May 25th. The game will run at 720P undocked, and 1080P docked. Both modes will also include a 30FPS as well. Well worth a couple of frames shaved off to have a souls game on a portable console essentially.  Are you excited to pick up Dark Souls Remastered on the Switch?  Tell us in the comments below, and check out the teaser trailer to help entice you until the release.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was one of the most overlooked titles for the Wii U.

The game seemed to come out at the wrong place at the wrong time, where in order to keep Wii U sales afloat in 2014, Nintendo ended up littering the console with 2D platformers in hopes of turning things around. Not only did this not work, but in the sea of 2D platformers, Retro Studios’s sublime sequel to Donkey Kong Country Returns got overlooked for just being another platformer. Flash forward 4 years, and the game has become a Wii U gem, often being praised for the amazing soundtrack and cohesive level design. Now, people who never owned a Wii U or gave Tropical Freeze a shot can now finally experience pure platform joy and bliss.

During Nintendo’s surprise mini direct yesterday morning, the company announced that the game will be heading to the Nintendo Switch on May 4th. Probably the most exciting aspect of the announcement is the addition of a new mode. The game now includes a mode that’ll allow you to play as everyone’s favorite surfer monkey Funky Kong. Funky essentially acts as an easy mode for new players trying to get into the series, which is good for a tough as nails platformer as this one. Using his surfboard, Funky Kong can infinitely hover in the air, double jump, roll forever, and even breath underwater forever. This marks the characters first playable appearance in about 10 years since his unlockable appearance in Mario Super Sluggers for the Wii.

Are you excited for Tropical Freeze heading to the switch and Funky Kong’s playable return? Tell us in the comments below, and also check out the trailer for the game below as well!

11 Years ago Square Enix released a small RPG title for the Nintendo DS.

This game had an odd story and even odder gameplay. Unlike normal RPG’S, this one took advantage of the dual screens on the console to create 2 separate styles of gameplay. One where you would normally attack your way through enemies, and the other where you’d use magical pins to attack. Although very positively reviewed and loved by fans, the game failed to sell enough copies to warrant a sequel and any continuation of the series. This game was The World Ends With You, and the game is finally receiving a 2nd chance at success.

Nintendo’s January mini direct kicked off with this announcement, and fans were absolutely ecstatic about the announcement. Remember that weird anime guy with the headphones from Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance? His name is Neku, and he’s the main protagonist of the game.  The game starts with a mysterious countdown timer appearing on his hand informing him to get downtown or face termination, and from there, mysteries and mysteries abound pop up.

For fans planning a return trip to the game, you’ll be happy to know that Square will be adding a whole new section of the game that definitively wraps up the story for good. No release date has been announced, but the game is slated as a Nintendo Switch exclusive for sometime this year.  Check out the announcement trailer below!

Yesterday was a big day for Capcom.

Monday, December 4, 2017, marked a special 30th-anniversary stream for the Megaman where Capcom dropped some big bombs about the future of our beloved robot hero. The first news was that all 8 Megaman X games are coming to current-gen consoles, PC, and even the Nintendo Switch. The second piece of news was that the recent Megaman Legacy games will finally be arriving on the Switch with Amiibo support sometime in 2018. No exact date was given, but it can be safely assumed that it’ll release sometime in the first half of the year.

The last big bombshell of the celebration stream was none other than the announcement that Megaman 11 is real and is officially in development for all current-gen consoles and PC. The game is expected sometime late 2018. With the announcement also came with a pretty sweet trailer that gives us a taste of what the art and gameplay will look like. The game is what you’d traditionally expect out of the first 10 games, but the art style is a bit different. instead of using pixel art, the game instead is trying something new and using a more 3D hand-drawn style for the game. Check out the trailer below and enjoy the reunion.

The Jackbox Party Pack 4 is the 4th installment in what has become the yearly Jackbox series. This time around, Jackbox Games has brought only 1 familiar game, and 4 brand new ones revealed over the course of this summer, and while they all aren’t perfect, There are still plenty of great laughs and moments to be had with the game 4 iterations in.

Fibbage 3 is the first and only returning veteran game this time around. Nothing has changed other than new questions and the removal of the deFIBrillator.  The best new addition to Fibbage 3 comes in a new mode titled Fibbage: Enough About You. This mode is where you write out truths about yourself and see if you’re closest friends can get them right. It can be incredibly satisfying when you’ve perfectly guessed one of your friends, and even more surprising when you find out things you never knew about them.

Survive the Internet is the first new game of the pack and is also a contender for one of the pack’s best offerings. Players are asked pretty tame and tepid questions about their thoughts on medial and trivial things. Afterwards, those words are given to another player and are told to twist them into something vile and untrue in order to slander their reputation. Much like Quiplash before it, this game is not for the faint of heart, but you’ll find plenty of gut-busting and chuckle-worthy moments that make the game worth coming back to constantly.

Monster Seeking Monster is a mystery dating game where you play the role of a monster in disguise trying to date other monsters. Each of you has a hidden ability that’s only revealed if you are the highest placing player. You must attempt to date and gain hearts for 6 nights while trying to avoid having your ability revealed. It can take at least 1 full game to really understand the game which goes against the easy pick-up-and-play nature of Jackbox, but it can be very rewarding the second time around, as play styles can slightly change depending on which monster you are. The only thing weighing the game down a bit is that the usual 8th spot in the game is exclusively reserved for the audience this time around. It can be fun to watch it choose random pickup lines in hopes of dating someone, but it would have been nice to have an option to turn them off and replace them with a proper 8th person.

The 4th game on the list is Bracketeering, this pack’s answer to Quiplash. Players answer one prompt and duke it out in a tournament sized bracket to see who’s answer is the best. Players can also bet on which answer they think will make it out on top before, and during the start of a new bracket for extra points. The big draw of the game is the ability to play with up to 16 people at once, but sadly this ends up hurting the game in the long run. There are no options to readjust brackets for games with less than 16 people, so the game automatically fills in answers. The computer prompts aren’t especially enticing or fun, and more often than not, just draw the game out too long. There’s also the fact that ties are settled by quickly tapping the answer you want to win. In a group f 16+ this probably wouldn’t be a big problem, but when you have a group of 6-8 people, it can become unbalanced if someone is faster at tapping than others. While a great idea on paper, Bracketeering is ultimately undone by its ambitious scope.

The 5th and final game is Civic Doodle. In the game, the mayor of Doodle Valley tasks you with drawing murals and pictures of citizens in order to make the town a nicer place. Players will take turns competing against each other as they draw different murals on the same wall. Once a winning mural is chosen, the next players will be tasked to modify or add more to the drawing. once everyone has had 2 turns to draw, everyone must name the mural. Much like Survive the Internet, Civic Doodle is one of the top contenders for this year’s pack. It’s tons of fun seeing odd and hilarious modifications being made to previous paintings. the only downside is that 2 rounds in an 8 player game can drag out just a bit as 8 phases to one round is already a lot.

Overall, The Jackbox Party Pack 4 is still a great time with friends on or off the internet.  Expanded audience features are nice, such as being able to choose a collective lie for Fibbage 3, but others such as being the only 8th player in Monster Seeking Monster impede on some of the local aspects of the game.

FINAL VERDICT: ★★★★☆

While Nintendo fans wait eagerly this holiday season to take Skyrim on the go with them, Bethesda has some more surprises for Switch fans coming up soon.

This afternoon during today’s Nintendo Direct, Bethesda announced that they’re bringing the critically acclaimed Doom 2016 and the upcoming insanity that is Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus to the Switch.  Doom in all of its blood and gore goodness will gush onto the switch this holiday season, while Wolfenstein 2 will be shooting its way to a 2018 release. This is another huge win for 3rd party support on the Nintendo Switch. Doom 2016 is already an amazing game, and now being able to play it on the go wherever you want is a dream come true. It’s also great to see a relatively new release such as W2 not being left in the dust for too long as well. Are you excited that 3rd party support is ramping up in a big way for the Switch? One of the most unique games to grace the 7th generation of game consoles was Rockstar Games and Team Bondi’s L.A. Noire. The game became infamous for having one of the craziest development cycles, as well as shutting down the developer Team Bondi 5 months after release. Aside from the controversy, the game was pretty much universally praised by critics and fans alike.

Now, the game is getting another chance to shine. This morning, Rockstar announced that the game will be heading to next gen platforms November 14th. This includes your usual suspects like PS4 and Xbox One, but the big bombshell is that the game will also be heading to the Nintendo Switch the same day as the other 2!

This is big news as there hasn’t been a Rockstar game on a Nintendo system since 2009’s Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for Nintendo DS.  Aside from that, they also announced L.A. Noire The VR Case Files for the HTC Vive. Are you excited to play L.A. Noire wherever you go? Do you want to see the series make a comeback? Tell us in the comments below!

This morning’s Nintendo Nindie Showcase was a sight to see.

So many talented developers bringing some of the weirdest and coolest games to the Switch is something exciting both Nintendo and fans themselves. One of the stand-out developers doing an amazing job at this is Inti Creates. From Blaster Master Zero to Mighty Gunvolt Burst (and the soon to be released Azure Striker Gunvolt Collection on Switch.), they’ve been doing an absolutely fantastic job delivering some short, but fun Switch experiences. Their new game is a bit different though. Meet Dragon: Marked For Death, a 4 player co-op action game that you can play locally with friends, or online with strangers.

Worried about the project? Don’t be! If you’re a fan of the stellar Megaman Zero series or Megaman’s 9 & 10, rest easy. Ryota Itoi, director of the previously stated games is helming this new project. On top of that, it’s very exciting to see a 4 player couch co-op action game being released in this day and age. Reminds me of the stellar arcade co-op beat em ups that Konami made. The game is set to release sometime this Winter as a Nintendo Switch exclusive, with more info coming in the near future.

Back in January people went nuts when it was announced that Goichi Suda (Suda51) was working on a brand new game for Nintendo Switch starring No More Heroes character Travis Touchdown.

He stated that it would not be a traditional NMH game, but instead, a collaboration between him and smaller indie creators. Not much else was said afterward. Flash-forward to Nintendo’s special Nindie Showcase this morning and we finally have a concept trailer with a bit more understanding of what to expect from Suda’s brilliant and insane mind. Taking place 7 years after NMH, Travis Strikes Back starts with The Batt confronting Travis about the death of his daughter Bad Girl. The 2 fight it out but eventually get impaled by a phantom game console, and now must try and make it out of the cursed console alive.

As stated before, the games inside the console were created with collaborations from other popular indie devs, the first of them being the people behind Hotline Miami. Also to note, the game will be running the latest Unreal Engine. Not much else was shown beyond the trailer, but hopefully, we find out more about the collaborations going on with the game. The game is scheduled to release as a Nintendo Switch exclusive sometime next year. Check out the trailer below and get hyped!

Ever since its release last year, rumors have been abuzz that Final Fantasy XV would be making its way to Nintendo’s darling little hybrid system.

About a day ago during a Gamescom livestream on Twitch, XV Producer Hajime Tabata hinted that on top of the Windows and Mobile versions of XV that they are also working on a console version that rhymes with Twitch. No, it’s not the Xbox One Xitch, but good guess. If done right, FFXV on Switch could be incredibly cool and addicting. Would you be interested in double dipping in the game if it was brought to Switch? Check out the video mentioned above right here!

About a week ago, I discussed the Sonic Mania Panel that was held this year at Comic-Con.

During the showcase, Sega showed us the first screenshot and music for the brand new special stages. Now we finally have gameplay of the aforementioned stages as well as a peak at the returning orb stages from Sonic 3 & Knuckles!  It only seems like the hype is rising as Sonic Mania is only about 2 weeks away from release. Check out the trailer below! Sonic Mania releases for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, and PC on August 15th.

Even though 2016 marked Sonic’s 25th anniversary, it’s 2017 that’s really the year of Sonic.

We’re not only getting one, but TWO Sonic games this year. One of them is the next 3D entry titled Sonic Forces, but the other has much more people talking. It’s a brand new 2D pixel art tribute to the blue blur’s early days. I’m of course talking about Sonic Mania. I got the chance to play Mania at E3 this year and really enjoyed. Now just 3 weeks out from release, Sonic Mania is speeding toward the finish line with one final stop to make in the form of San Diego Comic-Con. I was lucky enough to get invited to the panel, and it didn’t disappoint.

Moderated by everyone’s favorite video game Social Media, Aaron Webber took to the stage to introduce the panel for the evening which included Takashi Iizuka (Head of Sonic Team), Christian Whitehead (Lead Dev & Programmer), Tee Lopes (Composer), Tom Fry (Art Director), and Simon Thomley (Programmer). After everyone was introduced, they went on to talk about the origins of the game. Sonic Mania began development in early 2016 and was code-named Sonic Discovery.

They were very nervous about initially presenting the game to Iizuka, but after they showed him Studiopolis Zone, Iizuka absolutely  loved it. He had always wanted to make another 2D Sonic game, and after seeing what was presented to him, he had great faith that the team would do it justice. He even went as far as to pull out a whiteboard and write it’s name right besides the original 3, and Knuckles. And so, Sonic Mania was born!

Next, the team moved onto programming. They talked about how they loved chronicling their favorite glitches as they made the game. They started making a top 10 list, but that quickly expanded to 20, and then 30, etc. They even showcased some of them. One was of Tails stuck in the ground, and another one called to mind the infinite Knuckles jump from Sonic Boom. Then Webber presented his favorite of all the glitches, and that was this.

Next, Tom and Tee talked for a bit about their contributions and history with Sonic. Tom talked about how Mania was his first time spiriting for a game. He stated that even though the game is meant to be a send-up to the Genesis era of Sonic, the game is a bit beefier than that and would need something more along the lines of the Sega Saturn to run it. Tom had always wanted a Sonic game for the Saturn, and said that the designs for the characters are what he’d think they’d look like on that console.

Tee also commented about how he wanted the Saturn, but had to keep his good grades in school according to his dad. He ended up maintaining the grades, but found out that his dad accidentally bought him a Sega Master System instead. No need for disappointment, this sparked his love for the hedgehog!

Finally, they decided to end the panel with 3 big bangs! The first was our first look at the special stages! No longer will fans have to suffer through the dreaded half pipe, but instead a revised version of the UFO from Sonic CD. There’s now only one UFO, and to catch him, you must collect blue orbs to increase your speed. Once you reach Mach 3, you’ll be able to catch him. Rings are also very important as they extend the time that you can be in the area.

The next 2 things were also big surprises for fans. Remember that awesome Pre-order trailer  a couple of months back? Turns out that the same guy who made that trailer also made an intro for the game in the same Sonic CD style! Finally, the 3rd and final reveal was that the dev crew created a special introduction manual for the game, and everyone at the panel got a copy of it! What a great way to celebrate 26 years of everyone’s favorite blue Hedgehog. The best part is that this is only a pit stop. We’re still 3 weeks out from the main course. Sonic Mania will release on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, and PC on August 15th.

In case you didn’t know, I’m a huge fan of Splatoon. Since naming it my game of the year in 2015, I’ve only come to appreciate the game even more for how it made us rethink how a shooter could be approached. With Splatoon 2 right around the corner, I made sure to sit down with the game’s new Salmon Run mode at E3. Could the creativity Splatoon brought to team based shooters work its magic on the traditional Horde Mode? Let’s just say I got caught off guard by how much I got splatted.

As mentioned, Salmon Run is Nintendo’s take on the Horde Mode that was made popular by games such as Gears of War 2. In it, you and a group of friends will team up to take on endless waves of enemies, with each wave increasing in both amount of enemies and their individual ferocity. Of course, Splatoon isn’t going to devolve into a gory sea of dismembered limbs, but what we get instead are new fish based enemies with some surprising abilities. Just when I felt like I could use my skills to work my way through my enemies, the salmon began attacking with… my best abilities?

That’s right. As we progressed, the stronger enemies began attacking us with our own Special Attacks. As we learned during the Testfire, most of these attacks are easy enough to dodge when you see them coming from another player. But when you’re fighting multiple enemies and you find yourself getting caught off guard from an army of foes with their sites set on you? Yeah, you get the idea. Don’t expect the Salmon Run to be a walk in the park, because you’ll surely get taken out if you keep your guard down.

Overall, Salmon Run feels like it’ll serve its function just fine. While it’s a little more straightforward than modes like Turf War, it acts as a fun side mode for you and your friends to tackle in between those stressful ranked matches online. With the online modes, the story mode, and now, Salmon Run, it looks like Inklings around the world will have so much more to dig their tentacles into when Splatoon 2 releases in July.

What do you think of the game so far, and are you excited for Horde Mode to come to Splatoon? Comment below and share your thoughts with us!

Out of the many Warriors spin-offs out there, Hyrule Warriors particularly stood out thanks to its ability to seamlessly blend traditional Zelda mechanics into the army slaying hack-and-slash action we’ve come to expect from Koei Tecmo’s series. When it came to Fire Emblem Warriors however, knowing that this series is a lot closer to the core Warriors franchise led me to believe that we would end up with a much more traditional interpretation when it was Chrom’s turn to take up his blade. Once I got some time to play the E3 build of the game for myself however, I quickly learned how wrong I was. A little bit of creativity goes a long way, which is why Fire Emblem Warriors truly surprised me with how well it blends the hectic combat with the conventions of Nintendo’s strategy RPG series.

At its core, Fire Emblem Warriors is still a Warriors game, following the decade plus tradition of using a single character to wipe out hundreds of soldiers at once. Only this time, it’s with some of the most popular characters from Nintendo’s strategy series. Playing as Marth, Chrom, Corrin, Xander, and Ryoma felt distinct despite all of them being sword wielders thanks to the attention to detail that stays true to the series. For example, Xander fights on horseback while Corrin uses her dragon transformations to compliment her fighting style, complimented by some fantastic animations that need to be seen in action. The two new characters never felt out of place either, with some amazing looking shield combos put into action. Needless to say, the game looks beautiful in motion, oftentimes looking like the jaw dropping cutscenes that the 3DS games have featured.

Visuals aren’t the only piece of Fire Emblem to make the transition. Defeating enough enemies leads to a level up, with the stats gained being random. So yes, the heartbreak of getting one point up out of a potential six or so will be felt playing through this. While it was said that the weapons triangle would be in the game, meaning certain weapons are strong and weak against others, we weren’t able to put that in action when everyone in the demo used swords. It’ll make that character swap ability to take over any ally on the field at any time important when you find yourself in an unfavorable matchup.

Or you could just bring a partner with you, since the pair-up mechanic from Awakening makes the transition here as well. By linking up with a teammate on the field, you’ll gain a variety of options, including switching on the fly, creating opportunities for double team combos, or unleashing powerful ultimate attacks that combines the might of your paired warriors. In typical Fire Emblem fashion, consistently using the same pair and constantly fighting side by side will unlock special conversations, all the way up to S-Ranks. Does this mean we’ll be able to have Marth and Lucina have some kind of weird, centuries old incest going on? I doubt it’ll go deep enough to include marriage, but it’ll be interesting to see characters who would never be able to interact otherwise like Tiki and Corrin find their way to each other.

With so much of Fire Emblem‘s identity enveloping Fire Emblem Warriors, I find myself being even more excited than I was before I played it. The attention to detail will make this feel like a truly special love letter to longtime FE fans, and if it ends up being anything like its Hyrule counterpart, then we’re going to be playing this for a long, long time. Let’s just hope the roster lives up to its potential.

Fire Emblem Warriors will go to war on the Switch and 3DS this September.

Pokken Tournament DX will serve as a second chance for the Wii U’s Pokémon themed fighter to catch fire when it releases this September with a handful of new characters joining the fight. While almost all of them were additions to the arcade versions, one character that will be completely unique to DX is Decidueye, the final form of Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon‘s Rowlet. When I got the chance to try out the winged archer during Nintendo’s E3 demo, I realized that his ghost shots brought a lot to the table when it came to keeping opponents at bay in its own way.

If you couldn’t tell from its Robin Hood-esque motif, Decidueye is primarily a ranged fighter, using its bow and arrow to keep opponents at a distance. I found it to be a powerful fighter up close as well, using its large wingspan to push opponents back to a safe distance when getting pressured. More importantly than just its standard fighting abilities however, are its arrows unique ability to hold the opponent in place. Staying true to its signature attack in Sun and Moon, Spirit Shackle was a ghost type arrow attack that prevented enemies from fleeing battle. In Pokken, this attack acts as a trap, keeping opponents locked into place for Decidueye to get in a few extra hits. Considering that most characters are rewarded for fighting fast and aggressively, fighting Decidueye would force you to second guess the idea of charging forward with reckless attacks, since one wrong move means you’re giving up free damage to the archer.

From my brief time playing with Decidueye, I found that its biggest weakness was its lack of chainable attacks. While many of the other fighters can deal huge damage with multi hit combo strings, the owl was only able to put together a handful of hits before it was left vulnerable. If it’s unable to keep opponents at bay, the player will have to rely on their wits, baiting, and a well timed counter to create some distance. Otherwise, there’s not a whole lot you’ll be able to do to push the foe away. Basically, it plays exactly how you would expect a ranged fighter to play in a one on one fighter.

I’m looking forward to spending more time with Decidueye and the rest of the cast to learn more about the ins and outs of their playstyles, but from what I’ve seen so far, the game’s newest character is a welcomed addition to the cast. Will it be enough motivation to double dip for Wii U owners? That, I’m not quite sure of yet, but I have a few more months to be convinced.

Let us know what you think of Decidueye being added to Pokken, and let us know who else you’d want to see in the comments!
