Yesterday was a big day for Capcom.

Monday, December 4, 2017, marked a special 30th-anniversary stream for the Megaman where Capcom dropped some big bombs about the future of our beloved robot hero. The first news was that all 8 Megaman X games are coming to current-gen consoles, PC, and even the Nintendo Switch. The second piece of news was that the recent Megaman Legacy games will finally be arriving on the Switch with Amiibo support sometime in 2018. No exact date was given, but it can be safely assumed that it’ll release sometime in the first half of the year.

The last big bombshell of the celebration stream was none other than the announcement that Megaman 11 is real and is officially in development for all current-gen consoles and PC. The game is expected sometime late 2018. With the announcement also came with a pretty sweet trailer that gives us a taste of what the art and gameplay will look like. The game is what you’d traditionally expect out of the first 10 games, but the art style is a bit different. instead of using pixel art, the game instead is trying something new and using a more 3D hand-drawn style for the game. Check out the trailer below and enjoy the reunion.

At San Diego Comic-Con’s World of Capcom panel, con attendees were regaled with news from the gaming realms of Monster Hunter, Marvel Vs. Capcom, Street Fighter, Mega Man, and Resident Evil. The panel was basically a “here’s what’s next” showcase and there was a lot of applause when each new title was brought up.

The first on the docket was Monster Hunter: World, launching globally in early 2018. This portion started off with a trailer for the game after which one of the panelists, Tristan Corbett, briefly explained what makes this title stand out. Of course, there will be brand-new monsters to hunt along with old favorites. The game’s ecosystem, with its vegetation and where monsters graze or hunt, is now crucial to survival and hunting strategy. The different environments will affect how the player chooses to hunt. This new title will also feature global online servers as well as drop-in online multiplayer. For more information on Monster Hunter: World, attendees were encouraged to stick around for its dedicated panel coming up after the World of Capcom one (you can read all about it here).

Next up was Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. They opened this section by revealing several new additions to the game’s roster. Joining the already diverse group of fighters are Spiderman, Haggar (Final Fight), Frank West (Dead Rising), Nemesis (Resident Evil), Gamora, and Thanos. They noted that pre-ordering the game will net you exclusive costumes.

The story revolves around the Infinity Stones from the Marvel universe.  The developers felt that it was a good time to return to that plot line because, thanks to current films like Guardians of the Galaxy, more people were aware of their existence. The two villains of the series, Marvel’s Ultron and Capcom’s Sigma, have merged to create the title’s big bad guy, Ultron- Sigma.

Ultron and Sigma aren’t the only things that have combined. Fighting stages are now mash-ups from Marvel and Capcom worlds. One example given was the Xgard stage (seen above), a mix of Thor‘s Asgard and Mega Man‘s Abel City.

Companion comics will also be released, with variant covers. The pairs featured in the comics share personality or background traits. For example, Ryu and Hulk both have anger management issues.

After that, the panel moved on to reveal some updates coming to the already-released Street Fighter V. They unveiled a surprise fighter joining the game, Abigail from Final Fight (yes, that burly dude in the screenshot above is named “Abigail”). This hulking colossus is the largest character in the game to date.

New stages were also announced. The first one shown, the Metro City Bay Area, pairs with Abigail and like the character, originated from Final Fight. The other stage was an oldie-but-goodie, Suzaku Castle.

The panel also announced the release of Mega Man Legacy Collection 2, which will contain games 7 through 10. The collection will include extras, like challenges and online leaderboards. It will launch on August 8 for the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

For those who don’t remember much about these titles, the panel gave a brief refresher. Mega Man 7 is 16-bit. Mega Man 8 was the first 32-bit game in the series as well as the first to have voice acting (extremely awkward voice-acting but I digress). Mega Man 10 returns to its 8-bit roots and introduces the character, Bass. Protoman will be playable in both and 10Mega Man 10 will also feature stages themed to the Killers (Enker, Punk, and Ballad).

The final game discussed was Resident Evil: Revelations. I say “discussed” rather than “shown” because there wasn’t footage of the game. Instead, attendees were treated to a message from the game’s director, Kōshi Nakanishi (seen above).

We were also given a brief synopsis of the game along with a description of some gameplay features. The game takes place between Resident Evil 4 and with players assuming the role of Jill Valentine, who is searching for Chris Redfield. He was taken captive inside an abandoned cruise ship, the Queen Zenobia, by a bioterrorist organization. There will be a traditional story mode as well as a Raid Mode, which features co-op gameplay.

The panel wrapped up with a trivia contest. And there was much rejoicing.

On the third day of San Diego Comic-Con, July 22, Room 25ABC was abuzz with Monster Hunter news. The room was filled to capacity for the Monster Hunter panel held there. As you might guess from the panel’s timing, the focus was on Capcom’s newly announced game, Monster Hunter: World. Two of the people responsible for the game were present, Producer Ryozo Tsuijimoto as well as the Executive Director and Art Director Kaname Fujioka. Director Yuya Tokuda was still in Japan, hard at work.

Monster Hunter: World has several new features that the panel detailed. But first, we were given a brief overview. The game will have 14 weapon classes, a life-like ecosystem, and expansive, ever-changing terrain. There will be both a single player campaign as well as four-player co-op play. But wait! There are some first for the series related this. The co-op will be cross-regional, meaning you can play with people from around the world. Online drop-in multiplayer is also coming to Monster Hunter: World. So if you are in over your head in a mission, you can get a friend’s help without having to start over.

Let’s talk about the game’s world for a bit. The concept for realistic, living ecosystem was actually conceived 10 years ago. One of the game’s fields, called the Ancient Forest, was used as an example to show how these ecosystems work.

Humidity dictates what plants grow in each section, which in turn draw different herbivores and then their predators. As the hunter goes deeper into the Ancient Forest, more powerful monsters can be found, such as the Great Jagras or the Anjanath (more on these bad boys in a moment). Since Japan doesn’t have much diversity in terms of humidity, the team traveled to Australia and learned more about high humidity plants.

Each monster has its own method of marking its territory, from scratching the barks of trees to spraying some sort of mucus on nearby fauna. One important strategy for hunters to utilize will be to pit monsters against each other, even if it means luring them away from their territory.

Okay, now we get to show off some of the new monsters that hunters will be taking on. First is the Great Jagras. It’s initial design was a bit different from the final product. The first thought was to simply enlarge a normal Jagras, another monster found in the game. This idea was later thrown out.

Next up was the Anjanath. The concept of this monster focused around its powerful (and humongous) jaws. One design added hair, based on the recent study that suggested dinosaurs might have had fur or feathers.

Familiar faces are also getting upgrades. For the Rathalos, quality improvements were incorporated into the appearance of the scales and skin. Its wingspan and skeletal structure were also adjusted to make its movements appear more lifelike.

To study reptilian movement, the development team had a special field trip to a Japanese alligator garden. The research helped them understand more about the creatures’ body weight as well. They took photos from the excursion and scanned them into the games 3D engine. This was part, while beneficial for work, was also for fun.

Monster Hunter: World will feature many graphic upgrades. Players will notice improvements in the fur shading found in Felynes as well as monsters, like the Anjanath, as well as muscle shading seen during movement. Another biggie is translucency, like in the Rathalos’ wings, to help add to the realism.

Returning weapons will have more functionality. Videos for each of the 14 weapon classes will be available in the coming days.

In co-op mode, hunters can send up a signal flare to call for help. Hunters will also be able to utilize their environment like never before. See that rock? Go ahead and climb it, just like you have always dreamed! It is a brave, new world, my friends.

Monster Hunter: World is scheduled to release globally early 2018 for Playstation 4 and Xbox One.

This past week at E3, I had the pleasure of talking with Capcom’s Hiroyuki Kobayashi, Producer of Resident Evil 4, 6, and the animated CG films including the upcoming Resident Evil Vendetta. We talk about the differences between making a Resident Evil film versus the games, and what those differences mean for creators.

Geekscape: So, the Resident Evil animated movies have been a little different from the games. What made you guys choose to tell these stories in film instead of a video game format?

Kobayashi: In the video games, the focus is more on playing the games, so you can’t easily develop deeper characters or deeper stories, but in the movie, we’re very happy to be able to show more of the backstory of the three main characters, and the drama among these people.

Geekscape: Which part of the movies has been your favorite part to develop? You talked about being able to develop the characters further, what has been your favorite part?

Kobayashi: For me, I really wanted the movie to be able to tell a story without knowing the background stories of any of the characters, and I think we succeeded in that, and I’m fond of that. We really wanted a good balance of horror and action, and I feel we succeeded on that too.

Geekscape: Exactly where in the Resident Evil timeline does this take place? Is this in between any of the games or does it have its own separate continuity?

Kobayashi: So, this one takes place right after the game Resident Evil 6.

Geekscape: How has it been, making the movie under Sony? Have they been supportive of your ideas and the crew?

Kobayashi: So, this is the third movie that we made with Sony Studios, and we always have a good time making the films; every film has a new story and characters, with different people taking the place of the main characters, and we really enjoy working with each other.

Geekscape: Resident Evil’s  4, 5, and 6 were sort of a middle trilogy before 7 and starting something new. What was your favorite title of that trilogy to develop?

Kobayashi: I, myself, only produced 4 and 6. 4 was kind of challenging because we did a total remodeling of the game. So for me, 4 has more of my thoughts behind it, so it’s more more memorable.

Geekscape: Resident Evil 6 was 5 years ago, do you look back at the game and think you would change anything, or are you happy with what the story ended up as?

Kobayashi: I feel I did the best I could do with 6. I feel the four characters had good, human drama between them.

Geekscape: So, you said that in these animated movies, you enjoy fleshing out the characters and developing them more. Who was your favorite character to expand upon for this movie?

Kobayashi: My favorite character is Leon. The motorcycle scene and the battle scene on top of the building were among my favorite scenes. There is a scene that takes place in a lodge where Rebecca, Chris, and Leon are conversing and those kinds of interactions are those that you can’t do easily in the games, so I’m really happy to show this part of the world.

Geekscape: And the film is getting a limited theatrical release on June 9th, isn’t it? Are you excited to have the film in theaters?

Kobayashi: I didn’t expect it to be released theatrically, so I’m really happy to have heard that news, and I’m very excited about it.

Geekscape: You were also the producer for some of the Devil May Cry games. Is there any chance of seeing the series come back sometime soon? Will Dante return?

Kobayashi: I can’t comment on that, but if you want to see Dante, he’s over at the Marvel vs. Capcom booth right there!

And there you have it! It was a pleasure being able to sit down with Mr. Kobayashi and talk about these films. Resident Evil: Vendetta in select theaters June 19, on Digital June 20 and 4K, Blu-ray and DVD July 18.

After a surprise reveal last year at PSX 2016, Capcom has remained pretty hush hush on Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite.

Today, we finally got a bit more info on what will be going on in the game. Turns out the story mode is completely ridiculous but amazing. All you need to know is that Ultron and Sigma team up and fuse together to create Ultron Sigma, and now both Capcom and Marvel heroes must join together to take him down. The trailer introduces a couple of new roster characters such as Strider, Hulk, Thor, Chun Li, Chris Redfield, and more! The trailer even ends with a release date of September 19th for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Of course you can’t just have a regular trailer. With Capcom being Capcom, old habits die hard as the final shot of the trailer advertises and incentives buying the Deluxe Edition of the game which includes 6 premium costumes and DLC characters including Sigma as a playable character. The fact that they probably already have those 6 characters made  and are purposely keeping them hostage as DLC overall ends up putting a slightly sour taste in my mouth as I’m sure that’s going to be how they compromise not having Wolverine in the initial roster. Nonetheless, are you excited for this game? What character do you want to see included? Tell us in the comments below!

Back in the late 80’s/early 90’s, Capcom used to be the king when it came to making licensed video games. More specifically, games based off of the insanely popular Disney Afternoon. 4 years ago we were treated to a great DuckTales remake, but since then, not much else has happened with those beloved classics.

This morning, Capcom has announced that they’ll be keeping the classics alive as they’ll be releasing The Disney Afternoon Collection later this year. The game will release for $20 on April 18th, and will include both DuckTales,  both Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers, Tailspin, and Darkwing Duck, but there’s more to the collection than just the initial 6 games. Much akin to 2015’s Rare Replay, the collection will add additional features such as behind the scenes art, a rewind feature, and snapshot challenges including time attacks and boss rushes.

As of right now, the collections biggest downside is that it will not be releasing on the Nintendo Switch. It’s quite a head scratcher seeing as how all of these games originated on the NES. Perhaps if demand is high enough, then Capcom might consider a Switch release. Check out the trailer below, and bask in the glorious Disney nostalgia!

Briefly: Following the first poster for the film, which debuted yesterday, Screen Gems has just released the very first teaser trailer for its anticipated Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

The trailer really drives home the fact that Alice will need to go back to where everything began to finish things off. The Red Queen is present in the trailer, and lets Alice know that she’ll need to return to the centre of the hive, and we also see that crazy laser room from the first film.

Picking up immediately after the events in RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION, humanity is on its last legs after Alice is betrayed by Wesker in Washington D.C. As the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead hordes, Alice must return to where the nightmare began – Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.

In a race against time Alice will join forces with old friends, and an unlikely ally, in an action packed battle with undead hordes and new mutant monsters. Between losing her superhuman abilities and Umbrella’s impending attack, this will be Alice’s most difficult adventure as she fights to save humanity, which is on the brink of oblivion.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think! Resident Evil: The Final Chapter hits theatres on January 27th!

Briefly: Did anyone else forget that this was even happening?

Screen Gems today debuted the very first poster for its upcoming Resident Evil: The Final Chapter in advance of the first trailer releasing online tomorrow.

The poster’s tagline notes that ‘This January evil comes home’, as this apparently final film will see Alice return to Raccoon City in order to finish things things off.

Capcom hosted a Monster Hunter panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con with a focus on the recently released title, Monster Hunter Generations. The event was moderated by Tristan Corbett, the Monster Hunter Brand Manager at Capcom.  Joining him were two very special guests, Yasunori Ichinose and Shintaro Kojima, Generations’ Director and Producer, respectively. IMG_0487

The discussion quickly dove into upcoming DLC, the first highlight being the Okami-themed armor set for Felynes.

IMG_0488

There are many collaborative DLC in Japan and with Generations releasing there first, many DLC have already been made available to Japanese players. However, this DLC is exclusive to players in the West. It was a sort of amusing concept, given that this Felyne-specific armor is based on Okami‘s Amaterasu, a goddess in wolf-form.

IMG_0489 IMG_0490

The creation of this DLC sparked a poll amongst the development team: “Which is better, cats or dogs?” In the end, cats won. Kojima-san remarked that neither himself nor Ichinose-san participated in the poll.

IMG_0493

The second DLC discussed also featured a Felyne-only armor set. The Mega Man set is particularly special because much of the Development team were fans of the series. A trailer was shown highlighting the set and it was noted that the armor will have different color skins depending on what attacks the Felynes use (they couldn’t go into more detail than that). The color change was akin to Mega Man switching weapons and gaining different abilities based on the bosses he defeated.

It should be noted that, as in previous Monster Hunter titles, all DLC is free.

IMG_0500 IMG_0503

The panel then moved on to how the game’s monsters are designed. The first monster they mentioned was Amatsu, whose mention earned quite a bit of applause from the audience. The monster is an old favorite from Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, a game for the PSP that never saw a release outside of Japan. Its concept is based on the snake-like dragons found in Eastern mythologies.

IMG_0505

Amatsu’s eye color changes and chest glows when it enters its “enraged state.”

IMG_0509 Amatsu has the ability to fly because its body is filled with gas, which allows it to float. Its fins are used to navigate in the wind. The concept was inspired by kites. Monster designs sometimes draw inspiration from animals. In Amatsu’s case, it was the Leafy Sea Dragon.

IMG_0512

Amatsu uses water-based attacks in which water shoots from its mouth. The animation is based on explosive chemical reactions.

IMG_0520 IMG_0524

The gear that can be forged from materials found when carving Amatsu’s corpse are based loosely on Shinto ceremonial garb. The majority of the armor sets created from “big boss monsters” are bulky but Amatsu’s set does not because it did not fit Amatsu’s image.

IMG_0525

The second and final monster discussed at the panel was Nakarkos, a monster that made its debut in Generations. It was inspired by the idea of a dragon zombie. The team pointed out that zombies do not exist in the games’ world and that the concept was strictly for design purposes. Nakarkos is actually a monster that covers itself in the bones of others.

IMG_0530 IMG_0535

The initial design was more lizard-like but another designer changed it to a cephalopod/kraken-like creature.

IMG_0537 IMG_0544 IMG_0549

Nakarkos’ design fit well with the Jurassic Frontier, a location new to Generations.

IMG_0556 IMG_0558

Two different armor sets can be crafted from Nakarkos’ materials. The pair are based on the concept of the heroes and villains of American comic books. The “villain” sets can be seen above.

IMG_0560 IMG_0561

And here are the “hero” sets.

The panel finished off with a trivia contest in which attendees guessed panelists’ favorite weapon class. Those who guessed correctly won a poster signed by Ichinose-san and Kojima-san plus some Japanese badges.

Man, Capcom and Nintendo are killing it with these crossovers! They already announced DLC starring outfits from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Strider, Fire Emblemand Okami. And now, we can add Star Fox to the growing list. This one feels very fitting for the cat-like Palico and Prowler buddies, given their furry exterior.

Not only will Captain Fox McCloud be made available as a costume but it appears as though Slippy Frog, Peppy Hare, and Falco Lombardi are also getting similar treatment.

Monster Hunter Generations for the Nintendo 3DS releases on July 15. Will you be joining the hunt?

2005 was the year that Phoenix Wright took the courtroom by storm here in the West, and where Phoenix was, Maya Fey wasn’t far behind. But after getting in her fair share of trouble across the first three games as Nick’s spirit channeling assistant, the pair went their separate ways, failing to make a significant appearance in the series since.

As you might have heard, that’s about to change with the sixth mainline Ace Attorney game. Considering Spirit of Justice partially takes place in a country known for spirit mediums, you know Maya can’t be far. Splitting protagonist duties between two characters for the first time in series history, Phoenix will be by Maya’s side in the country of Khura’in while Apollo takes back his starring role as he holds the fort at the Wright Anything Agency. As detailed in our E3 preview, Phoenix will take on a court system that has banished lawyers, (thanks to its method of viewing the final moments of the deceased when they were killed), with some new mechanics that will help turn the tables. On the other side of the world, Apollo and Athena will use their unique skills, (including Athena’s psychoanalyzing that debuted in the fifth game), creating a unique gameplay experience for each.

Naturally, we’re expecting plenty of strange spirit shenanigans with Maya back in the mix, but will we see the return of any of the other Fey girls? What’s Pearl up to these days? It can’t be any weirder than that time Maya helped Nick fight Marvel’s strongest heroes in Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. Either way, make sure to watch the trailer below and watch Maya’s return fully voice acted, then check back with us as our coverage of the Spirit of Justice panel goes into detail on what we can expect from the next big turnabout.

Monster Hunter Generations for the Nintendo 3DS releases in North America on July 15. Capcom has been generous with the DLC announcements so far, with armor sets themed to characters from StriderFire Emblem, and Okami. We can now add The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker to the list.

Your Palico friends will be able to equip this set (I presume Prowlers will, too). I personally found the set a tad jarring in the video. In a still image, it is kind of cute but put it in motion and it is not my cup of tea. But to each, their own! I am sure there will be plenty of hunters who will fall head over paws in love with this DLC.

MH4U to MHGen Save Data bonus

In other news, those of us who hunted in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate will be rewarded with several bonus goodies as a reward for having save data for the game on our system. What data you ask? Yuri Araujo of Capcom-Unity explained it this way:

The Save Data in question is the “Extra Data” that gets saved on your SD Card. In MHGen, all data is actually stored on the SD Card as well so you would need to be using the same 3DS to get the Bonus content.
You can, however, transfer your entire 3DS to a new one and claim your bonuses on that one.

The bonus pack includes items to get you started in the game on good footing as well as the exclusive Baby Tigrex Armor for Felynes. The design is based on the monster’s look in Poka Poka Airu Mura DX and it is super adorable!

If you are still on the fence about getting Monster Hunter Generations, the 3DS eShop has an impressively-thorough demo available. Give it a shot!

As a longtime fan of the Ace Attorney series, I always imagined that it must be really hard to make a sequel for a game like this. As a simple lawyer, how can the development team keep finding new ways to prove that people are lying through text? Obviously, whoever’s working at Capcom is a lot more creative than I am, because they’ve pulled off new mechanics well so far. Their impeccable track record is seemingly continuing in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney- Spirit of Justice, the sixth mainline game for the popular handheld series, asking the lawyer to examine the senses of the victims at the time of death.

E3 2016 Phoenix Wright Screen 1

Finding himself in a foreign country that detests lawyers, with a legal system that relies on Spirit Mediums to take us back to a victim’s final moments to identify their killers, (kind of like Minority Report in reverse), how is someone supposed to defend the innocent with rules like these? With that said, how can the defendant be innocent when you’re watching what seems to be the crime in action, with your client committing the crime? In typical Wright fashion, you bluff until you find a clue that can blow the case wide open. Except this time, examining memories themselves will be the only way to do so.

E3 2016 Phoenix Wright Screen 2

When viewing the victim’s death, the sensations that they’re feeling manifest into words in the vision. While not meaning much at first glance, this method of cross examination will let you point out contradictions in new ways. In the demo version, the time of death was called into question since the victim heard the Song of Ceremony, which wasn’t supposed to take place until some time after. Perhaps the most obvious sense, his sight, also played a role as the person apparently blacked out right before feeling the blow to his head that led to his death. Once these contradictions came to light, it wasn’t long before the court started questioning their full proof methods, but in typical Ace Attorney fashion, not before taking some humorous pot shots at our favorite lawyer. Just be prepared to get it your guesses wrong on your way to success, which gives the game plenty of chances to show off the return of five “chances” before you get a game over as opposed to the health bar that’s been a mainstay since the second game.

E3 2016 Phoenix Wright Screen 3Comparing testimony to the senses that the victim experienced is your path to justice.

This mechanic takes some time to get used to, but I have complete faith in the development team. Like with the psychological profiles and nervous ticks from the last two games, I fully expect to be challenged in new, exciting ways when Spirit of Justice releases exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS in September.

Wow. Just…wow.

In what easily has to be one of the most spectacular matches in CEO history, Hajime ‘Tokido’ Taniguchi and Seon-Woo Lee (better known as ‘Infiltration’) battled it out for the CEO Street Fighter V championship in Orlando, Florida this weekend. Having survived a pool of over 800 Street Fighter V  players until being sent to Loser’s Bracket after losing to Infiltration 3-1 in Winners Semifinals, Tokido went on to defeat some of the most prolific players in the game today in Daigo Umahara, Haitani, and Momochi to earn a spot in the Street Fighter V Grand Finals.

What would happen in the rematch between Infiltration and Tokido would be nothing short of an instant classic.

Infiltration went into CEO undefeated this entire season, finishing first in the Final Round tournament in Atlanta and NorCal Regionals in Sacramento. Odds favored the Korean-born player, and he seemed to be well on his way to his third win of the season–that is until Tokido’s agrressive play outmatched that of the 2015 EVO champion.

Grand Finals began with Infiltration taking the first set with Nash by drawing Tokido into the corner and quickly teleporting behind him to land an overhead punch–a move which has become Infiltraton’s go-to finsiher since the move gets around most defenses. Surprisingly, that would be the only set Infiltration would take in Grand Finals.

After evening the score at one set a piece, Tokido never looked back. Suddenly, Tokido implemented some of the most aggressive Ryu gameplay in the entire CEO tournament. Rather than keeping his distance from Infiltration’s Nash, Tokido went straight at him with a series of quick three-hit combos and chain grabs–closing the gap between both characters. Infiltration had difficulty escaping Tokido since he rarely repeated the same combination, making in frustratingly difficult for Infiltration to get proper read on his opponent. In the closing moments of several rounds when it appeared Infiltration–with a healthy life lead–would take the win, Tokido managed to steal wins away by capitalizing on timely parries and reading Infiltration’s teleport attempts.

With the bracket reset, Tokido’s dominance continued as he went on to sweep Infiltration in three straight sets–ending the tournament with a deafening statement by finishing off Infiltration with a Perfect K.O. and sending the crowd in a frenzy of cheers and applause. Tokido takes home the CEO Street Fighter V Championship as well as a prize purse of over $12,000.

Geekscapists, with EVO only a month away, do you think Tokido will repeat his success in Las Vegas, or will Infiltration reclaim the title? Better yet, can an American win the Street Fighter championship for the first time in EVO history? Sound off in the comments below and we may mention you on the next episode of the Geekscape Games Podcast!

With each new Dead Rising game, the zombie beat em up finds new ways to get even more insane each time. Being able to craft weapons and mount guns onto vehicles in previous games was insane enough, but what happens when you throw in a super powered Exo Suit, Christmas themed weapons, and a city that’s much larger than any one before it? You get Dead Rising 4, which might have been the most fun I had playing a game throughout the entire E3 convention. Oh, and did I mention selfies?

Dead Rising 4 marks the return of Frank West, who has stepped aside as the series protagonist since the original game graced our consoles in the early days of the Xbox 360. Deciding to return to Willamette, the same city that housed the mall that served as the first game’s setting, our favorite zombie slaying reporter arrives just in time for Christmas. Unfortunately for him, another zombie outbreak plagues the city, forcing Frank back into action as he battles the undead with a ton of new weapons to play around with. The best part? Each one is just as crazy as you would expect.

E3 2016 Dead Rising 4 Screen 4

Going all in with the Christmas theme, most of the new weapons featured in the free for all demo included a grenade launcher that shot exploding tree ornaments, a pair of giant light up presents that could be used as boxing gloves, and a candy cane crossbow to name a few. There’s something satisfying about beating down hundreds of zombies with giant presents, or any way to tear them apart in humiliating fashion. Speaking of which, you can’t have Frank West without needlessly taking pictures of everything in the middle of the apocalypse, which is photography makes its big return. Attempting to take scary, violent or even sexy pictures is still as strange as ever, but as recent years have taught us, you aren’t really apart of an incredible moment if you don’t take pictures of yourself there. With this in mind, Frank can now take selfies, adding a hilarious touch to an already over the top game, especially when you start changing his facial expressions with the analog sticks.

But lethal Christmas gifts, weaponized cars and electric go karts aside, Frank’s biggest weapon this time around might be the Exo Suit. By putting this on, not only does he look like a male version of Capcom’s forgotten P.N. 03, but he gains a huge boost of strength in the process. Suddenly, the world becomes his weapon, allowing him to pull parking meters out of the ground and using them as clubs, punch cars into the distance while mowing down any zombies that are unlucky enough to be in its way, and use weapons that would otherwise be too heavy to use. These games have never shied away from being absolutely silly, which is why this suit felt like a great addition to already insane game.

E3 2016 Dead Rising 4 Screen 5

Keeping in mind that Willamette will be several times bigger than Dead Rising 3, and will include the ENTIRE mall from the first game as part of the game’s open world environment, all while promising more zombies on screen at once than any game before it, and is there any reason not to be excited for when Dead Rising 4 releases for the Xbox One and PC in time for the holidays? With so much carnage to look forward to, we can’t wait to find Frank West under our trees, as the series’ original zombie slayer returns to take back his town. Who’s excited!?

E3 this year is really blowing last years out of the water! Our first look at the fourth iteration of Dead Rising is here, and its got me super excited!

Thats right! Frank West is back, and with him so is the franchises normal wackiness that was missing in Dead Rising 3. I mean, we’ve got power armor. Electric go-karts. Candy Cane crossbows. FLAME THROWING TRICERATOPS!

Thanks to Project Scorpio, we can get our hands on these amazing titles for PC as well. NO NEED TO BUY AN XBOX ONE FOR ME!

When Capcom promised that it would bring the Resident Evil franchise back to its horror roots after Resident Evil suffered both critically and financially due in part to its action heavy direction, we never would have expected the series to get the full PT treatment. Yet, after Resident Evil 7 debuted at Sony’s E3 2016 press conference, we’re left with something that is undeniably creepy, but looks a lot more like something we’d expect from Silent Hill.

Based on the trailer below, we don’t have a whole lot to go on. Taking place in America in the aftermath of the events in Resident Evil 6, the first person horror game takes players through a decrepit house, full of all of the grotesque imagery that we would be more likely to see in a certain playable teaser. Using a variety of jump scares, the dark atmosphere, and visual tricks to keep the player feeling tense, that sense of horror that the series has been lacking definitely feels like it’s back in play. Considering that the entire game can be played using PlayStation VR only makes the idea that much more terrifying.

This trailer is such a departure from past Resident Evil games that I can’t help but have a mountain of questions after watching it over. Where are all the monsters? Why do ghosts seem to be such a major part of the scare factor? Will there be any zombies or tie ins to the Umbrella Corporation? And how will the Wesker family tie in to the whole thing after the conclusion of Revelations 2?  We’re definitely intrigued with this new direction, and I’m glad to see that someone is picking up the PT mantle after so many indie games have ultimately failed. Still, I can’t help but laugh at the irony that after years of being accused of ignoring their fans, Capcom finally listens… To Konami’s!

Plus members, go download that demo and tell us what you think in the comments. There’s definitely a lot to talk about, so I’m looking forward to your thoughts on this new direction! One thing is for sure though, RE7 is putting the horror back into the series that put it on the map.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is scheduled to release on

He’s fought evil between dimensions. He’s taken on the finest heroes and most dangerous villains that the Marvel universe has to offer. He’s covered wars! And if these leaked screenshots of the yet to be announced Dead Rising 4 are any indication, there’s no one you would rather have on your side in a zombie apocalypse than Frank West.

After being relegated to guest appearances and becoming the focus of DLC side stories since the character’s debut in the original Dead Rising, the photojournalist takes the lead once again when he finds himself in the middle of yet another zombie outbreak. As expected from a series such as this that doesn’t take itself seriously in the slightest, Frank returns to the fray with a variety of crazy weapons and abilities, one of which is some kind of space armor with a giant concrete stick. Being surrounded by hundreds of zombies never looked so good in the screenshots below. Go ahead, check them out!

E3 2016 Dead Rising 4 Screen 1 E3 2016 Dead Rising 4 Screen 2 E3 2016 Dead Rising 4 Screen 3

The images alone make it obvious that the game will take place near Christmas, so it will be interesting to see how that plays into whatever crazy narrative the game is sure to follow. One thing is for sure though; after Dead Rising 3 improved so much on the previous formula, it can only get better as long as photography makes its return.

Are you looking forward to the return of Frank West? Tell us what you think in the comments, and make sure to keep up with our E3 coverage as more news on Dead Rising 4, and every other announcement throughout the week, begins to surface.

If you were still sour over the lack of single player options in Street Fighter V, Capcom has some news that might perk you up.

Releasing as scheduled at the end of June, the latest Capcom-Unity blog update goes into detail on what we can expect from the game’s yet to be released Story Mode. Titled “A Shadow Falls,” the narrative will follow Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li as they travel the world in search of fragment pieces that are said to stop the Seven Black Moons that M. Bison and his evil organization, Shadaloo, are gathering to grant the dictator unimaginable power. It sounds pretty wacky, but if you want the full synopsis, the blog post explains it as follows:

The Street Fighter V Cinematic Story Expansion, “A Shadow Falls,” depicts the ultimate battle between the evil Shadaloo organization and the heroic World Warriors who rise up against them. Seven “Black Moons” are deployed by Shadaloo, granting M. Bison unimaginable power and enveloping the earth in total darkness. Seeing the moons mysteriously appear in the sky, Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li embark on an epic journey around the world to retrieve fragment pieces that are the key to stopping the “Black Moons” before it’s too late. Along the way, they encounter the rest of the World Warriors, each of whom have their own agendas and motivations in mind. The final battle between good and evil begins now… who will RISE UP?

The best news of all is that A Shadow Falls will allow us to play as all six season one DLC characters, three of which will still be months away from release. While unfinished and still needing balance updates before their official release, it will be exciting to play as Balrog, Juri and Urien alongside Ibuki, Guile and Alex so far in advance. Promising to be about 3-4 hours in length, finishing it on its two different difficulty settings will net us a total of 80,000 Fight Money, which is almost another character.

Not all the news is good though. Aside from what one could consider a short length after the team has said that they drew inspiration from the lengthier Mortal Kombat storylines in the past, the June update will also mean that real money purchases will finally be implemented. Doing away with the promised Zenny system for purchasing DLC, each platform will be priced in standard currency, with characters costing $5.99, stages and premium costumes costing $4.99, and alternate stages and story costumes costing $1.99. This also means the free trials for Alex and Guile will come to an end, so if you have more Fight Money to earn with them, now would be the time to do it.

Does the news of the included DLC characters and the implementation of Story Mode give you hope for where the game is headed? Or has the last few months burned you too strongly? Share your opinion with us by commenting below!

If you were eagerly anticipating the next character to join the Street Fighter V roster, looks like we’re going to have to wait another month.

Despite promising a character a month, the third fighter of the fighting game’s first season of characters wasn’t revealed until the end of May. When the month came and went, Capcom confirmed that she wouldn’t be ready as anticipated. Instead launching alongside the long awaited story mode at the end of June, the company is promising to be more upfront with their schedule going forward. As expected, fans such as myself didn’t take too kindly to the news since the delay wasn’t confirmed until the end of the month the character was scheduled for, adding to the issues the game has gone through since its February release.

Then again, it’s looking like the team is putting the extra time to good use. Bringing back Ibuki from Street Fighter III, it’s clear from her debut trailer that her ninja bombs and air dash will give her plenty of new tools to work with in her upcoming appearance. Fighting with a much more flashy take on her typical move set, players will have plenty to work with when the ninja is finally released.

With Balrog, Juri and Urien on their way, we still have plenty to look forward to as Street Fighter V pushes towards the second half of its first season. What do you think of Ibuki, the delay, or how it was handled?

Pokken Tournament was super effective against Street Fighter V in retail, as the fighting game from Nintendo and Bandai Namco outperformed Street Fighter V  in sales in the United States.

According to video game analyst ZhugeEX, who provides video game sales data and has access to early NPD reports, Pokken Tournament did very well against Street Fighter V here in the U.S.:

Though no specific numbers are provided, ZhugeEX does say that based from his information, more physical copies of Pokken Tournament were sold in the United States than Street Fighter V–even though Capcom released their game a full month before Pokken Tournament.

How could this be, you ask? Good question. How does the most recognizable fighting franchise in the world fail to meet sales expectations and underperforms to a game hybrid between Tekken and Pokemon? As discussed by many of us at the Geekscape Games Podcast, Street Fighter V feels more like a demo than a full retail game–especially when compared to the vanilla version of Street Fighter IV.

Suffering from a Story Mode which abandoned Street Fighter’s traditional formula, online matchmaking issues, and a number of bugs found in the PC version of the game, Capcom’s newest entry from its flagship franchise failed to become the retail juggernaut many thought it would be. Instead of selling the projected two million copies Capcom predicted, the latest entry in the Street Fighter franchise only managed to sell 1.4 million copies worldwide. Yes, Alex and Guile are in, but many fan favorites are painfully absent.

Where’s Akuma?!

Considering the 36 million people who make up the install base for the Playstation 4 far surpass that of the Wii U (which stands at nearly 13 million), it is surprising Street Fighter V couldn’t pull off the sales goal. Those who received review copies of the game reported how much Street Fighter V lacked in content, but one would assume that the name of ‘Street Fighter’ alone would move units. It should be noted that while sales for Street Fighter V are low, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the franchise is losing its popularity among the competitive fight scene. On the contrary, it’s quite the opposite.

As of April, over 4,000 Street Fighter V players have registered to compete at this year’s EVO Tournament in Las Vegas–making it the biggest tournament in the event’s history. Pokken Tournament has over 1,000 players registered at this year’s EVO as of this writing.

How can Capcom translate the game’s popularity into a financial gain? What can Nintendo and Bandai Namco do to capitalize on the success of Pokken Tournament? Let us know in the comments below and we will discuss your points on the next episode of the Geekscape Games Podcast!

July 15 will not only mark the release of the latest entry in Capcom’s Monster Hunter series, Monster Hunter Generations, but the launch of a themed special edition New Nintendo 3DS XL as well. The system will be specially colored, blue in North America and Red for Europe. Both regions’ will feature the same art on the 3DS’s top shell, an emblem of the “Fated Four,” the main monstrous quartet from the game.

Monster Hunter Generations New Nintendo 3DS XL

It should be noted that Monster Hunter is a series that greatly benefits from the New Nintendo 3DS XL’s C-stick and ZL and ZR buttons. The former makes controlling the camera a breeze and the latter can be assigned to the new Hunter Artes. The standard New Nintendo 3DS also has these features.

A price for this system has not been listed but I imagine that it will cost about the same as other special editions, US$199.99. Regrettably, the game is not included. Neither is the AC adapter cable. While these omissions are not uncommon, it stings nonetheless.

What do you think of the New Nintendo 3DS XL – Monster Hunter Generation edition? Will you be adding it to your collection?

[This review is based on a sample provided by the publisher.]

As a fan of Capcom’s Monster Hunter series, I had high hopes for VIZ Media’s first volume of Monster Hunter: Flash Hunter, featuring art drawn by Shin Yamamoto and a story penned by Keiichi Hikami. Unfortunately, only some of those expectations were met. As one would anticipate, the manga caters to those that have played the games but it goes so much in that direction that the book’s story is lacking in depth (at least in volume 1).

I don’t generally like to start a review off on a negative note but I feel like the story or lack thereof should be addressed sooner rather than later. I think if I wasn’t as excited for this title as I was, I wouldn’t have been so disappointed. But that is the problem. The majority of people who will pick up this manga are going to be fans. And from my experience, those readers are also going to have experience with manga on some level.

The story centers around a hot-headed hunter named Raiga from the village of Dundorma. Volume 1 mainly outlines how he meets his teammates, the skilled gunner Keres and the bookish Torche. After Keres and Raiga meet, they are constantly butting heads, leading most of their exchanges to basically boil down to arguments (see the page above for a good example). The remaining dialogue is either flavorless or, in the case of hunting scenes, reads like a strategy guide. The characters get hung up on details of hunting strategies, equipment, and items. I can definitely see this being a turn-off for unfamiliar readers.

The manga’s art is a double-edged sword. Fans can clearly identify the sets of armor each of the characters are wearing as ones from the video games. Even in action sequences, you can pick them out. Same goes for the monsters. When a monster appears for the first time, a bare-bones bio is listed for it but, once again, fans will have no trouble naming them. The art for Qurupeco and Rathian impressed me the most.

So what’s the negative side of the art? With the exception of a few intro pages, The backgrounds are sparse at best. The Monster Hunter series has some fun environments and it’s a shame that they weren’t included as backdrops.

I would give volume 1 of Monster Hunter: Flash Hunter a 2 out of 5. Yes, the series has potential (and it still could improve in volume 2) but as it stands, that potential is wasted. I would have been happier with an art book drawn in this style.

Staying on schedule with their promised character per month DLC model, Guile has been confirmed as the next fighter to join the Street Fighter V roster.

Arriving as the only true “charge” character so far, (with Vega and Chun-Li having their moves either partially or completely changed to quarter circle motions,) the all-American family man returns with some interesting tricks up his rolled up sleeves. Most surprisingly, he will be the only character with a walking crouch. Called the “Faultless Move”, Guile can hold his down charge for his trademark Flash Kick while moving forward, finally giving us the chance to emulate the cheating CPU from Street Fighter II.

Street Fighter V Guile Screen 4

In addition, Guile’s V Skill and V Trigger enhance his Sonic Boom projectiles in ways that will let him control the field like never before. His skill is Sonic Blade, allowing him to launch a stationary version of his trademark fireball to either set a trap or keep downed opponents on the offensive. His trigger, called Solid Puncher, gives him the ability to throw out continuous Sonic Booms at varying speeds depending on the button pressed. While limited like all the other V Triggers in the game, this brief period will give Guile a huge space advantage, allowing him to control the field or extend combos at his will, on top of powering up his Critical Art.

Street Fighter V Guile Screen 1

Street Fighter V Guile Screen 2

Street Fighter V Guile Screen 3

Speaking of his Critical Art, the Sonic Hurricane from Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 returns as Guile’s go-to ultimate attack. Launching a large, stationary Sonic Boom directly in front of him, what better way to apply the pressure even further than with a large projectile to bring the opponent closer to you for big damage? Flash Kick fans might be a little disappointed that these new moves are all Sonic Boom heavy, but hey! You get a walking crouch, which sounds amazing!

Street Fighter V Guile Screen 5

In addition to Guile, the April update will come with some long awaited enhanced rage quitting penalties that lock frequent abusers out of the game for a set amount of time, and the Air Force Base Stage. At the asking price of 70,000 Fight Money, this throwback stage has all the same soldiers cheering you on, all of which have aged surprisingly well from their SFII appearance 25 years ago, but with a new coat of paint. Season Pass holders will get the stage for free as a thank you from Capcom!

Street Fighter V Air Force Bace

Guile himself will be the standard 100,000 FM for new characters, but like Alex before him, he will be free for all players until Capcom finally gets the Zenny system up and running, which will serve as their exchange system for real money. Including his trials, story content and availability across all modes, you might want to take advantage while you can.

No official date has been announced for the release of the April update, but Capcom is promising it will be available by the end of the month.

Grab your great sword and some traps and prepare to head to your favorite book supplier! Viz Media is releasing Monster Hunter: Flash Hunter in English. With Monster Hunter Generations releasing this Summer, the timing is perfect for the series to create a buzz in the manga scene. The series is written Keiichi Hikami with artwork by Shin Yamamoto.

Veterans of the games will be familiar with the story’s universe but for newcomers, here is what Viz Media has to say about the setting as well as a teaser for the first volume:

It is an age when monsters rule the world, soaring through the sky, treading the earth and filling the seas. Humanity survives on the fringes, relying on a special kind of hero to defend the people from danger – the Monster Hunters!

In the opening volume of the series, hunting giant man-eating beasts is no job for the weak-hearted, but along with courage, it takes skill and experience to be a good Hunter. It also takes good teamwork. Raiga and his comrades are experts now, but when they started down the path of the Monster Hunter, they lacked these qualities. When they head off to confront the dragon-like Queropeco, they quickly learn that this flaw could cost them dearly…

As a fan of the video game series, I am looking forward to this one. The games’ plots always seemed to take a backseat to the gameplay and multiplayer action. It will be a nice change of pace to experience a bonafide Monster Hunter story.

Look for Monster Hunter: Flash Hunter both in print and digital form (available on Nook, Kobo, Kindle, iBooks, comiXology, Google Play, BOOK WALKER, and the Viz Manga app) when the first volume releases April 12.

As the Ace Attorney series drifted back towards a focus on Phoenix in the fifth entry in the popular text adventure series, it was only a matter of time before his friends started filtering back in as well. This felt even more inevitable when it was confirmed that the upcoming sequel, Ace Attorney 6, would heavily focus on spirit channeling, allowing the Wright Anything Agency to relive the final moments of the victim’s lives. If you were expecting to see the return of the famed Fey family, then you were right! Phoenix’s old assistant from the original trilogy, Maya Fey, will make her comeback in the upcoming sequel.

Despite making recent appearances in a wide variety of spinoffs, including Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace AttorneyUltimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, and most recently, Project X Zone 2, the noodle burger loving head of the Fey family hasn’t had an appearance in the main series since Trials and Tribulations back in 2007. With Phoenix firmly taking center stage in the fifth game, it was strange not to have an appearance from someone so close to him considering the violent events that took place throughout the story. Apparently this time around, the call of spirit channeling was too much for Ms. Fey to ignore, showing that her penchant for assisting Nick during trials, (and almost becoming a victim herself,) is still in effect.

That’s not to say Apollo and Athena will be ignored. On the contrary, the two proteges are left to defend the agency in Japan while Phoenix is dealing with his problems in Kurain Country. Does this mean that the two will finally get to stand on their own and outside of Phoenix’s shadow? As a big fan of Apollo and wanting to see his story that started in the fourth game resolved, I can’t object to that!

Check out the trailer below and see Ms. Fey in all of her non-aging glory. Wait… shouldn’t she be 27-ish in this game? Why does she still look like a teenager!? Ehm… anyway, let us know your thoughts, and be sure to check back with us as more information surfaces on a Western release date.

The latest Nintendo Direct had plenty of great first party news for Wii U and 3DS owners, but that didn’t mean third party announcements would get left in the dust. Perhaps the biggest announcement of the entire presentation, Capcom and Nintendo unveiled the latest Monster Hunter title, which will arrive on our 3DS handhelds a lot sooner that we thought.

Coming Summer 2016 and no longer titled Monster Hunter X, Monster Hunter Generations looks to bring even more mobility and attack options for our custom hunters to take advantage of when battling these towering beasts. Guns are seemingly getting a big overhaul, allowing gunners to leap above monsters and shoot them from the air, alongside some new air based sword attacks. My only concern is that MH4 was significantly easier thanks to its added attack options combined with many of the early monsters failing to adapt with the game play. If Generations’ early screens are anything to go by however, both new and returning monsters should be even more vicious, hopefully keeping up better with our new tricks.

Not to be outdone in the DLC department, Generations is already following up on MH4U’s massive amount of free costumes by revealing Marth’s gear from Fire Emblem being available for the title. You know why that’s awesome? Because the prince’s androgynous appearance would work for both men AND women!

Briefly: As I’ve likely expressed numerous times on the Geekscape Games podcast, aside from a few exceptions, fighting games are not generally my thing.

That said, Capcom has just debuted a 3+ minute CG trailer for Street Fighter V, and it’s probably the coolest look at the game that we’ve seen next.

All of the game’s participants appear in the video, and it does a fantastic job of… well, making me want to play Street Fighter V.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think! Street Fighter V hits stores on February 16th!

Let the celebration begin! Capcom’s classic RPG, Breath of Fire III, is coming to the North American PSN Store this month on a yet-to-be revealed date. The title, priced at US$9.99, will playable on PSP, PS Vita, and PlayStation TV. Breath of Fire III will be joining its successor, Breath of Fire IV, which has been in the Store for a long time now.

No further details were provided but this is more than enough to get me thoroughly hyped. Also, I am going to put this out there right now: My fairy village can beat up your fairy village.

Will you be downloading Breath of Fire III? Do you have fond memories of the game? Let us know in the comments!
