Wow. Just…wow.

In what easily has to be one of the most spectacular matches in CEO history, Hajime ‘Tokido’ Taniguchi and Seon-Woo Lee (better known as ‘Infiltration’) battled it out for the CEO Street Fighter V championship in Orlando, Florida this weekend. Having survived a pool of over 800 Street Fighter V  players until being sent to Loser’s Bracket after losing to Infiltration 3-1 in Winners Semifinals, Tokido went on to defeat some of the most prolific players in the game today in Daigo Umahara, Haitani, and Momochi to earn a spot in the Street Fighter V Grand Finals.

What would happen in the rematch between Infiltration and Tokido would be nothing short of an instant classic.

Infiltration went into CEO undefeated this entire season, finishing first in the Final Round tournament in Atlanta and NorCal Regionals in Sacramento. Odds favored the Korean-born player, and he seemed to be well on his way to his third win of the season–that is until Tokido’s agrressive play outmatched that of the 2015 EVO champion.

Grand Finals began with Infiltration taking the first set with Nash by drawing Tokido into the corner and quickly teleporting behind him to land an overhead punch–a move which has become Infiltraton’s go-to finsiher since the move gets around most defenses. Surprisingly, that would be the only set Infiltration would take in Grand Finals.

After evening the score at one set a piece, Tokido never looked back. Suddenly, Tokido implemented some of the most aggressive Ryu gameplay in the entire CEO tournament. Rather than keeping his distance from Infiltration’s Nash, Tokido went straight at him with a series of quick three-hit combos and chain grabs–closing the gap between both characters. Infiltration had difficulty escaping Tokido since he rarely repeated the same combination, making in frustratingly difficult for Infiltration to get proper read on his opponent. In the closing moments of several rounds when it appeared Infiltration–with a healthy life lead–would take the win, Tokido managed to steal wins away by capitalizing on timely parries and reading Infiltration’s teleport attempts.

With the bracket reset, Tokido’s dominance continued as he went on to sweep Infiltration in three straight sets–ending the tournament with a deafening statement by finishing off Infiltration with a Perfect K.O. and sending the crowd in a frenzy of cheers and applause. Tokido takes home the CEO Street Fighter V Championship as well as a prize purse of over $12,000.

Hajime ‘Tokido’ Taniguchi stands victorious as the new CEO Street Fighter V champion.

It might not be the Tekken x Street Fighter announcement that we’ve all been waiting for, but Bandai Namco has just announced that Akuma will be playable in its newest update of the game, Tekken 7 – Fated Retribution!

This announcement came in the form of a short trailer, displaying a pact between Heihachi’s wife Kazumi, and a shadowy figure, to kill Heihachi if she dies.  He agrees to repay his debt, and the shadowy figure is revealed to be none other than Akuma, cutting to a scene where he stands on a cliff on a darkened landscape, with his trademark “Ten” kanji amassing the background.

He seems to have returned with all of his signature moves from Street Fighter, such as his fireballs, hurricane kicks, dragon punches, and even Shun Goku Satsu, otherwise known as the Raging Demon.  Ranged attacks aren’t often used in the Tekken formula, two examples are Alisa Bosconovitch with her rocket punch, and Devil Jin with his laser beams–so this has the potential to change up the game!  Also this may give skeptics some insight on how the Street Fighter formula could fit in a Tekken battleground–and my own personal guess is that they’re using this as a “test” of sorts before they finalize the mechanics of Tekken x Street Fighter.

The way this could weave into the storyline is interesting as well.  Akuma is depicted as an antagonist in Street Fighter, using the demonic fighting force Satsui no Hado, which is a driving force for his desire for death matches, and his lack of compassion for other beings.  Tekken is a 3D fighting game centered around a power struggle for a family owned company (Mishima Zaibatsu) that has the military power to take over the world.  Heihachi is the centerpiece of this struggle, being the antagonist of the series, wanting to use the company for such a purpose.

At the moment, Tekken 7 is only available for arcades, although it has been announced for console release (date unknown).  Tekken x Street Fighter has been dubbed “under development” by Katsuhiro Harada (Tekken’s producer/director) as of 2014 San Diego Comic-Con, no other updates have been provided since then.

The dead live! Street Fighter Alpha favorite, Charlie Nash, is returning next year to consoles with the release of Street Fighter V. Fans can get a dose of Nash in the upcoming Machinima live action series Street Fighter: Resurrection. Check out the teaser trailer below!

Iconic heroes Ken and Ryu are reunited to face their deadliest threat yet. The long-presumed dead Charlie Nash is back, and is targeting legendary Street Fighter champions for mysterious reasons. Now it’s up to Ken and Ryu to uncover his lethal plan and discover if he is ally or enemy. Keep your friends close, and your guard up.

This announcement marks the return of director Joey Ansah (The Bourne Ultimatum, Snow White and the Huntsman), who in 2014 brought us the incredible Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist. A live action retelling of Ken and Ryu’s back stories.

Set ten years after Assassin’s Fist, Resurrection stars Alain Moussi (Suicide Squad, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Pacific Rim) as Nash himself. Mike Moh (Empire) and Christian Howard (The World’s End) return as Ryu and Ken.

Street Fighter: Resurrection is a collaboration with Machinima and Capcom, and will premiere come March 2016 on the go90 streaming network.

The Street Fighter franchise holds a special place in my heart, as the first arcade game I played. As the series progresses and evolves, it’s a must for me to learn the ins and outs of how it grows, which is why playing Street Fighter V on the E3 show floor was a must. After playing IV and its multiple versions for so long, I thought jumping into Capcom’s newest fighter would be easy. As I would soon learn though, everything unique to the last game is thrown out the window.

Featuring every character announced so far, including Ryu, Chun Li, Cammy, M. Bison, and Street Fighter Alpha veterans, Charlie and Birdie, the first change that I noticed was the pacing of the game. Using my familiar attacks with Chun Li were just a step off, or would miss by a fraction of a second, which can make all the difference in a match. It was soon clear that despite IV being considered a slow paced fighter, V is slightly slower, which forces different timing on attacks. Aside from this, most of the returning characters played similarly to how they have in the past, with some moves being changed, (Chun’s Lightning Kick is a quarter circle motion with a set amount of kicks as opposed to rapidly tapping,) removed, (her Hazanshuu split-legged overhead,) or added, like most of Charlie’s move set.

But while the foundation may be the same, V adds some features that make it stand out from its predecessors. Removing the Ultra Meter and Focus Attack that became vital parts of the last game, this new version replaces them with the V-Gauge. The V-Gauge builds as each character lands hits or gets damaged, with three different functions. For instance, the V-Skill gives each character a unique move, like parrying for Ryu or teleporting for Charlie, the V-Reversal, which activates a counter attack when being hit by an opponent, or the V-Trigger, which costs both segments of the two tiered meter. Similar to an Ultra, V-Triggers are meant to turn the tides of battle, with each fighter having unique boosts. For example, Ryu hits harder while Chun-Li gets an extra hit added to each attack. These attacks change the dynamic quite a bit, but I would imagine that it would be even harder to balance the game with such drastic differences between the cast. The people at Capcom have been the leaders when it comes to fighting games for so long however, that if anyone can pull it off, it’s them.

On the subject of changes however, if you’re expecting to jump in as Charlie or Birdie, both have gone through huge changes since their last appearances, with Charlie especially playing completely differently. For Birdie fans, (all five of you,) you’ll be happy to know that his massive weight gain has come with more long range options. Finally putting that chain to good use, he’ll be able to command throw with it as both an anti air and a long range option. Charlie on the other hand, has discarded all of his charge attacks with the good old quarter circle. Using variations of the Sonic Boom and Flash Kick that he taught to Guile, the new Charlie plays much more aggressively, being able to control space with his projectile, while teleporting in close and overwhelming them with his scythe kicks. Assuming Guile will be in the game, it makes sense that Charlie gets an overhaul, and while we joke about how fighting game stories don’t matter, I’m excited to see where his new attitude takes him.

Turns out the leaks were real!

During the special Smash Bros Nintendo Direct presentation, in addition to the reveal of a new set of amiibo, and the confirmation of yesterday’s leaks with Ryu and Roy’s character reveals, the news that stole the show was that the new DLC was available immediately after the presentation closed!

Including the rumored Mii Fighter costumes, the Kirby stage from Smash 64, Roy, Ryu and the previously announced Lucas, the entire package will set you back just under $30 for both versions. If you don’t want everything the set has to offer, the bundle costs the same as if you bought each item individually. Standard characters costs $4 for one version and $5 for both Wii U and 3DS access. Ryu comes with a $7 and $8 price tag, which includes his Street Fighter II inspired stage, three versions of both his and Ken’s themes, and the character himself, who rewards players with extra damage for actually inputting his attacks with the same commands as his native game. When you top these off with the $2/$3 Kirby stage and the costumes, (including Tekken, Mega Man, Animal Crossing and Virtua Fighter inspired gear,) at under $1/$2, there’s plenty of content to bring players back into the arena.

Aww, you were just a day away from keeping it a surprise, Nintendo.

If two allegedly leaked YouTube videos are to be believed, then it looks like Fire Emblem‘s Roy is making his grand return alongside Ryu, the face of the Street Fighter series. The two reels show what appears to be their arcade mode ending sequences, showing off small glimpses of what they have in store for their opponents once their release date comes.

From what we can tell, Roy still has similarities to Marth, the character his move set was cloned from in Melee. Still, a closer look at his animations, (namely his Up-B attack,) seem to have some slight differences compared to his past attacks. Is there a chance that Roy will be more of his own character, especially when Lucina already fills the role of a Math clone?

Ryu on the other hand, looks like he’s bringing something completely new to the Smash Bros arena. Coming equipped with his focus attacks, hadoukens, shoryukens and hurricane kicks, (feel free to spell out the Japanese name, because I’m not doing it,) most telling is the legendary fighter’s apparent ability to perform legitimate combos, something which isn’t normally possible outside of high level play. Will this change the way players approach the game? I can’t wait to find out!

Alongside these leaks, further rumors suggest new trophies for the Inkling and Ryu’s best friend, Ken, a new Dreamland 64 stage, Ryu’s iconic Street Fighter II Dojo stage, and Mii Fighter costumes, including Zero from Mega Man X, Mega Man .EXE, Akira and Jacky from Virtua Fighter, Animal Crossing‘s Isabelle and Heihachi from Tekken. At this point, we’re almost guaranteed to get the official word from Nintendo during E3 week, but it seems like the cat’s out of the bag.

While not terribly surprising for those who knew that sound files for Roy and Ryu were part of the Mewtwo update, it’s still surreal to see the biggest fighting game icon make an appearance in Nintendo’s all star brawler as the first, true original character as part of Smash’s DLC line up. Roy is a little more expected, since I felt his inclusion was an inevitability once DLC was announced, but I’m hoping more unique characters see their returns soon, (especially Wolf, Snake and Ice Climbers, although the last two probably aren’t possible.) Speaking of Snake, if copyright is an issue, can we at least slap his move set on the Mach Rider guy or something?

June 14th is turning out to be an eventful day! Between the Nintendo World Championships, the release of Lucas, a new stage, and character costumes for Super Smash Bros., and our very own Geekscape picnic, it’s not as if we needed more plans for that day! But when it comes to new Smash news, I’m sure we’ll find a way to spare 20 minutes.

Starting at 7:40 AM Pacific, Nintendo will broadcast a new Nintendo Direct, hosted by Masahiro Sakurai himself. The only thing being promised at this point is new content, so while I’m trying not to get my hopes up too high out of fear that the previously announced DLC will be all that is discussed, I can’t help but feel that something big is coming, especially just outside of E3. And if new characters are announced separately from the main E3 Direct, how amazing will Nintendo’s presentation be on the 16th if Smash of all things got bumped?

Will we see Roy return? Or will the rumored Ryu be confirmed? Will Chibi Robo get in in light of its newly announced game!? Let the speculation begin! Tell us who you want to see, then come back and compare your predictions after the Direct wraps up!

You read that right. A live action ‘Street Fighter’ series will be hitting your small screens in 2013. Today it was announced that we would be getting ‘Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist’ from the team that brought about the fan film ‘Street Fighter: Legacy’. Could it be good? Capcom USA, Inc. and Assassin’s Fist Limited have signed an agreement to produce a live-action series based on Capcom®’s successful ‘Street Fighter®’ game franchise.

To be called ‘Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist’, this thrilling, multi layered series will take the audience back to the formative years of the iconic characters, Ryu and Ken, as they live a traditional warrior’s life in secluded Japan. The boys are, unknowingly, the last practitioners of the ancient fighting style known as ‘Ansatsuken’ (Assassin’s Fist). The series follows them as they learn about the mysterious past of their Master, Gouken, and the tragic and dark legacy of the Ansatsuken style. Can their destiny be changed…or will history repeat itself?

‘Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist’, the brain-child of Joey Ansah, is being brought to the screen by the core team behind the hugely successful fan movie ‘Street Fighter: Legacy’.

“Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist will be what fans have been waiting for. Legacy was a taster; a glimpse of what a live-action Street Fighter should be,” said Joey Ansah, announcing the movie. “This takes the story right back to the start – the origins and motivations of Ryu, Ken, Gouken and Akuma. This will become the definitive back-story from which further epic adventures will follow.”

‘Street Fighter: Legacy’ received a rapturous reception from fans and critics, becoming one of the most successful YouTube movies of all time in the film & animation category, with over 8 million views. Christian Howard, who starred as ‘Ken’ in ‘Legacy’ and has co-written the script for ‘Assassin’s Fist’ with Joey Ansah, said, “Our priority is to stay true to the appearance, fighting techniques and canon of the Street Fighter game. At the same time we’ve managed to make this an emotion and character driven story, which will surprise viewers who might just be expecting a super faithful fight fest!.”

The series is being produced by Jacqueline Quella, whose previous projects include ‘Romanzo Criminale’ (Crime Novel); Academy Award nominated ‘Don’t Tell’; and Tobe Hooper’s ‘The Toolbox Murders’.

The series will be directed by Joey Ansah who, as ‘Desh’, was part of one of the most celebrated movie fight scenes of all time, in ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’; and was recently at the heart of the action in ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’; and is in the forthcoming ‘The Numbers Station’ with John Cusack.

The series was announced by Capcom’s Producer for Street Fighter, Yoshinori Ono at Comic-Con 2012 (San Diego), and will be distributed worldwide by Content Media Corporation for a release in 2013

Have you been hoping that Capcom would release the first Marvel vs Capcom or even Marvel Super Heroes? Well now you can have both in one! The game will merge both fighting styles giving you the choice of classic one-on-one battles or you can choose the three-on-three tag style of Marvel vs Capcom. The game features an online multiplayer mode with a limit of eight players in the lobby. Players that are waiting for their turn will be able to watch the match currently going on by using the spectator mode. Marvel vs Capcom: Origins will also feature HD graphics and the ability to save replays of players’ matches. The game will be coming to Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network for $14.99 (1200 Microsoft Points).

Marvel vs. Capcom: Origins brings two classic arcade fighters – “Marvel Super Heroes” and “Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes” – together and to the modern generation. This September, fight like a hero, play like a legend!

Today the crew over at Capcom and CyberConnect2 announced that starting this afternoon on PS3 (28th XBOX), players of the crazy genre blending anime-fueled  experience, will be able to purchase and download the first in a series of DLC for the game.

Today players will be able to grab “Episode 11.5”. 11.5 offers insight on what happened between Episode 11 and Episode 12. Then next week, April 3rd, “Episode 15.5” hits the PSN and XBL stores. Both of these episodes offer a shift in the art style, taking an Anime approach. Check the trailer below, make sure to watch the WHOLE thing.

As you can see Street Figher favorites, Ryu and Akuma, make an appearance. Expect to get your hands on them in May with the Lost Episode packs.
