It’s Day 5 of our 12 Days of Switchmas! A number of folks here at Geekscape have shared their hopes and desires in terms of what they want from the Nintendo Switch…except your truly. Well, the wait is over, and now it’s my turn to express not only what I hope the Nintendo Switch will be able to do, but rather what it needs to do.

Right off the bat, the Nintendo Switch needs to have a Restore Point feature for all its games. One of the things I love about the Wii U and 3DS is the Restore Point feature applied to their Virtual Console games. Restore Points give gamers the ability to simply pick up a game where they left off–making gaming incredibly convenient especially when sessions can be cut abruptly short as work and family responsibilities come up. When it comes to Nintendo’s Wii U, it is frustrating that its titles do not have that feature when both the PS4 and XBOX One have it. It may seem like a minor thing, but there’s an obvious difference when booting up the Wii U to play Smash Bros. for Wii U as opposed to booting up my PS4 to play Overwatch.

In addition, I believe it’s safe to say that I speak for many Nintendo fans when I say I want a much more seamless method to join my friends to play online games. While Nintendo thankfully got rid of their atrocious Friend Code system, they didn’t go as far as they could.

Wii U owners were able to add friends by simply typing their friend’s Nintendo Network ID, but once a friend was added, there would be no in-game notification to know when they signed on or off. The only manner to know is to briefly leave one’s game and go to their Friends List and check for themselves. Compared to how simple the PlayStation and XBOX allows its users to know their friend’s online status and what games they are playing, it makes the Wii U’s method appear archaic.

Lastly, there needs to be voice chat on the Nintendo Switch. If Nintendo wants to emphasize more of a presence in the eSports scene, voice chat capability needs to be a top priority.

Splatoon online matches, while fun, made teamwork nearly impossible due to the lack of voice chat.

I love Splatoon (my wife even more so), but when I played online sessions with my buddies Ash Paulsen, Joshua Jackson, and Noah Roman, it was frustrating not having a method of communicating when the enemy was heading towards a certain area on the map or when one needed support. While players could use outside programs like Skype, players shouldn’t be forced to do so when other video game consoles already allow voice chat. I can’t imagine the Nintendo Switch hitting the market without voice chat capabilities, then again, this is Nintendo we’re talking about.

All that said, I will be placing my pre-order and waiting in line with bated breath until I get my hands on the Nintendo Switch. I have no doubts that the Nintendo Switch is going to have an amazing library of games to play: I just want an simpler process to do so with my friends online.

Oh yeah. I also want a new F-Zero game. Nintendo, 14 years is a long enough wait. My good friend Rico would echo my sentiment.

An F-Zero track in Mario Kart 8 but no new F-Zero? Why do you play with my emotions, Nintendo?

Sound those klaxon alarms because the second official trailer for Star Wars: Rogue One hit the internet this morning after premiering on Good Morning America. Many speculated that the final trailer for the stand-alone Star Wars film would be one of the trailers attached to Doctor Strange, but lo and behold, a new Star Wars: Rogue One trailer is here now! Perhaps there will be another trailer, but after watching this one, it is difficult to imagine what else Disney can show without giving any more away.

Rather than waste any more time, go ahead and watch it here and share your thoughts with us at our official Twitter account @geekscapedotnet.

Star Wars; Rogue One arrives in theaters December 16.

Moments before the Injustice 2 development team took the stage at San Diego Comic-Con to reveal more details about the highly-anticipated fighting game, Geekscape managed to sit down with the game’s director Ed Boon to get answers to many of the fans’ burning questions. The Injustice 2 Director is quickly asked what new changes and/or features will be coming.

We started off with what people expected and hoped we would do: bigger roster and include characters that we couldn’t include in the last game, but the biggest thing that we added is a thing we’re calling the ‘Gear System’–this whole system of acquiring costume pieces that actually level up your character, and this constant search for the best version of your character.

The Gear System will be a amped up version of the one found in the Apple/Android version of Injustice: Gods Among Us.
The Gear System will be an amped up version of the one found in the Apple/Android version of Injustice: Gods Among Us.

For example, if you use Batman you can make him a little bit better if you find, you know, special gauntlets that increases his damage a little bit more. You can find a utility belt that makes his interaction with the [interactive stage] backgrounds a little bit more effective–so you’ll constantly be doing that whole loot drop system: a constant search and pursuit for your ultimate version, your custom version of Batman, Superman, Aquaman, etc.

So that’s the big new feature that wasn’t in Injustice: Gods Among Us.

The next question brought to the table asked how much of an influence does the current run of DC films and television shows (Green Arrow, Flash, and Supergirl) have on the development of the game in terms of move sets and costumes.

Oh! We draw so much–you know–the thing about these DC characters is they’re represented in so many games, comics, movies, animated T.V. shows, video games, and we are huge fans and students of these characters; we are constantly watching those things, and often times we’ll see something and say, “that’ll be so cool in a game.”

Ed Boon wasn’t willing to specify just what those things were that would be ‘cool in a game’, so he was then asked if any studios have come to him personally about adding a specific scene from classic DC films or animated shows.

No. It’s more of like us paying an homage or a salute to those kind of things.

Speaking of DC shows, Katie Cassidy, who portrays Black Canary on Green Arrow, posted this now deleted image on her Instagram account back on May which carried the tagline “The process of game making! Freakin awesome!!”

kcbc
Does this tease a Black Canary entry in Injustice 2? If so, does that mean we can expect characters and skins from other DC shows and films?

Fans speculated that due to the elaborate motion capture camera setup, coupled with the familiar fighting stance she’s in, that Black Canary will ultimately be included in Injustice 2.

We are absolutely open to those ideas. We’ve done a little bit of it like it. We had the Man of Steel Superman. So we are constantly looking for crossover things to bring in. A lot of the fans of these games watch the movies and see the animated shows, so there’s a cool novelty in adding those aspects into the game. The thing about DLC is that you can go back after the game and say, “now wait a minute! Let’s add this cool thing!”

No clear ‘yes’ or ‘no’ was given, but it would be difficult to imagine–due to the popularity of Green Arrow, Supergirl, and Flash–that characters and/or skins from those shows fail to make it into the game as either in-game unlockables or future DLC packs–which brings us to the next obvious question: are there plans for DLC packs upon release?

Absolutely. That’s part of our cadence–release the game and continue to support the game. I think we are probably going to go further with DLC with [Injustice 2] than any of our previous games with packs of characters and costumes–and some of our costumes will be a gear piece; if you put on a certain gear piece, you might switch over to a different character. That is going to make finding the pieces super fun.

For those familiar with games like Destiny, the loot system can be either kind or cruel. Before players begin to panic over the prospect of a loot system which mimicks the aforementioned game, the gear system will more than likely mirror the one found in the Injustice game for Apple and Android. The mobile incarnation of the game allowed players to use in-game currency or actual cash to open digital card packs which awarded the player new DC characters and gear pieces to improve them.

No word was mentioned over how one acquires gear pieces or the chances of landing a rare item. The conversation then moves to whether or not there were any features or characters NetherRealm wanted to include in Injustice: Gods Among Us, but due to time and/or budget constraints they were unable to do so.

A lot of that falls into the category of characters. The DC Universe is all about the characters, and so there’s always that [conversation] of ‘what’s the roster?’ ‘Who can we include?’ We’re going to have a bigger roster than we had in the last game, but at the same time we want to have a lot more newness.

Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle will be playable characters in Injustice 2.
Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle will be playable characters in Injustice 2.

We just don’t want to just start with the Injustice: Gods Among Us cast and then add a few more. Half [of the roster] will be new. The other half are returning [characters]–just to keep things fresh as possible. We absolutely feel the anxiety and nervousness of ‘Oh, God. We hope Injustice 2 lives up to it’, and I think the whole gear thing is the answer to what makes this game better than the first.

At the time of this writing, the only members of the original Injustice roster making a return to Injustice 2 are Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman. The complete Injustice: God Among Us roster (including all DLC packs) featured a total of 30 playable characters.

Injustice Roster
Injustice 2 will feature a larger roster than Injustice: Gods Among US, but only half of the original roster will apparently be returning .

Going by what Ed Boon confirmed in that half of the Injustice: Gods Among Us roster will return, that means only 11 of the remaining 26 characters will make it to Injustice 2. Who those characters will be is anyone’s guess.

Ed Boon was asked what he feels is the team’s greatest accomplishment in terms of translating a character from the comics to the video game.

I think our visual fidelity and the method in we tell our story. Story in fighting games is like a bad punch line. It’s a joke. There’s no coherent stories in fighting games.

We wanted to do the opposite.

We have a multi-hour cinematic experience that you play where we are telling a very elaborate story. We hired professional actors who we think can play the role of these characters. We are trying to tell something as close to a great cinematic experience where you participate in the fight. In fact, the Injustice comics and games are telling one, big long story. and time wise, the  first Injustice comic was chapter one, Injustice: Gods Among Us was chapter two, the next Injustice comic is chapter three, and [Injustice 2] is chapter four.

When asked about the chances of seeing Injustice as a full-length feature film:

‘Some people have drawn parallels, we’ve actually never sat with the movie people and collaborated, or anything like that. Injustice is our universe, [set apart from] the DC movie universe and the animated stuff, and the comics. I’ve been asked, you know, ‘was this inspired from the movie?’ or ‘was the movie inspired by this?’ We’ve been just telling our own story, but there might be some coincidental similarities.’

I was curious and asked if any actors from the current crop of DC shows and movies have approached Ed Boon in an attempt to get their character in Injustice 2.

We definitely had a lot of discussions about guest characters. In Injustice: Gods Among Us, we had Scorpion from Mortal Kombat, and he was actually the most downloaded of all the Injustice characters.

InjusticeScorpion
Scorpion a.k.a. ‘Mr. Popular’.

There’s always a discussion of ‘would it be cool to have this character in Injustice?’, and I’ve certainly had people ask me if I can get their guy in the game, but it’s a pretty long process. A lot of discussion, and it definitely doesn’t boil down to ‘do we want him in? Okay. He’s in!’

There’s licenses and stuff like that.

Injustice 2 is scheduled for release next year.

Be sure to keep it locked onto Geekscape this week as we have interviews with Phil Lamar (Aquaman) and Laura Bailey (Supergirl) coming out this Wednesday and Thursday!

During today’s Star Wars: Rebels panel at Star Wars Celebration, it was revealed that one of the most diabolical and cunning villains from the Star Wars Expanded Universe is coming to the show.

Originally debuted in Timothy Zahn’s ‘Heir to the Empire‘ trilogy (largely considered to be the greatest series of Star Wars novels ever written), Grand Admiral Thrawn became an instant fan favorite. When Emperor Palptaine and Darth Vader died at the end of Return of the Jedi and coupled with the destruction of the second Death Star, the Empire was in shambles. With the remnants of the Empire left leaderless, they were easily hunted down and captured by the Republic. Ultimately, Grand Admiral Thrawn would take it upon himself to unify the remnants of the Imperial Navy and mount calculated strikes against the Republic. After locating the late Emperor’s secret facility, and attaining the aid of a cloned Jedi, Thrawn was nearly successful in gaining control of the galaxy, but that was not to be. Thrawn ultimately met his end y the hands of his own bodyguard, but with Star Wars: Rebels, the Gran Admiral now has a new lease on life.

ThrawnBanner
Welcome back, you cunning villain, you.

When Disney and Lucasfilm announced in 2014 that the existing Star Wars Expanded Universe (all comic, video games, novels, etc.) was no longer canon, many fans became upset since it meant popular characters such as Mara Jade, Dash Rendar, Kyle Katarn, and Grand Admiral Thrawn no longer existed. With today’s announcement; however, there may be hope that other popular characters from the old EU will return in some way, shape or form.

Geekscapists, if you can bring back any character from the old Star Wars Expanded Universe, who would you bring back? Let us know in the comments below!

Alright, Nintendo. First you team up with Vans Shoes and give us amazing Nintendo-themed footwear. Last week, you unleash Pokemon GO on us and overtake our lives. Now on this day, you announce that the Nintendo Entertainment System is coming back?

Earlier today, Nintendo revealed they will be releasing the NES Classic Edition–a smaller version of the Nintendo Entertainment System–on November 11. The NES Classic Edition with come with an HDMI cable, a replica NES Classic Controller (yes, just like the 1985 original), and will come packed with 30 pre-installed NES games. Additional NES Controllers will be sold separately for $9.99.

Additionally, those who own the Wii Classic Controller of the Wii Classic Controller Pro will be able to use them on the NES Classic Edition.

Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime says, “We wanted to give fans of all ages the opportunity to revisit Nintendo’s original system and rediscover why they fell in love with Nintendo in the first place. The Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition is dieal for anyone who remembers playing the NES, or wants those nostalgic memories to the next generation of gamers.”

With a $59.99 MSRP, the NES Classic Edition will undoubtedly be a hot item this holiday season.

Geekscapists, it is shocking to see that some beloved NES games have failed to make the list. For example, where is Contra? If we’re talking about amazing and beloved co-op games, why not include the grandaddy of them all? Anyway, what say you? If you could replace a game on the list with one of your personal favorites, what would it be? Sound off in the comments below (or on our Twitter account: @geekscapegames) and we will discuss your choices on an upcoming episode of the Geekscape Games Podcast!

In what easily has to be one of the most spectacular matches in CEO history, Hajime ‘Tokido’ Taniguchi and Seon-Woo Lee (better known as ‘Infiltration’) battled it out for the CEO Street Fighter V championship in Orlando, Florida this weekend. Having survived a pool of over 800 Street Fighter V  players until being sent to Loser’s Bracket after losing to Infiltration 3-1 in Winners Semifinals, Tokido went on to defeat some of the most prolific players in the game today in Daigo Umahara, Haitani, and Momochi to earn a spot in the Street Fighter V Grand Finals.

What would happen in the rematch between Infiltration and Tokido would be nothing short of an instant classic.

Infiltration went into CEO undefeated this entire season, finishing first in the Final Round tournament in Atlanta and NorCal Regionals in Sacramento. Odds favored the Korean-born player, and he seemed to be well on his way to his third win of the season–that is until Tokido’s agrressive play outmatched that of the 2015 EVO champion.

Grand Finals began with Infiltration taking the first set with Nash by drawing Tokido into the corner and quickly teleporting behind him to land an overhead punch–a move which has become Infiltraton’s go-to finsiher since the move gets around most defenses. Surprisingly, that would be the only set Infiltration would take in Grand Finals.

After evening the score at one set a piece, Tokido never looked back. Suddenly, Tokido implemented some of the most aggressive Ryu gameplay in the entire CEO tournament. Rather than keeping his distance from Infiltration’s Nash, Tokido went straight at him with a series of quick three-hit combos and chain grabs–closing the gap between both characters. Infiltration had difficulty escaping Tokido since he rarely repeated the same combination, making in frustratingly difficult for Infiltration to get proper read on his opponent. In the closing moments of several rounds when it appeared Infiltration–with a healthy life lead–would take the win, Tokido managed to steal wins away by capitalizing on timely parries and reading Infiltration’s teleport attempts.

With the bracket reset, Tokido’s dominance continued as he went on to sweep Infiltration in three straight sets–ending the tournament with a deafening statement by finishing off Infiltration with a Perfect K.O. and sending the crowd in a frenzy of cheers and applause. Tokido takes home the CEO Street Fighter V Championship as well as a prize purse of over $12,000.

Geekscapists, with EVO only a month away, do you think Tokido will repeat his success in Las Vegas, or will Infiltration reclaim the title? Better yet, can an American win the Street Fighter championship for the first time in EVO history? Sound off in the comments below and we may mention you on the next episode of the Geekscape Games Podcast!

With a month left before release, Paramount Pictures has released the final trailer for the third entry in the rebooted Star Trek franchise. Along with new footage, the trailer features a new song by Rihanna entitled ‘Sledgehammer’.

Fans were critical of  the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond due to the use of ‘Sabotage‘ by the Beastie Boys. Some felt the music felt out of place, and it will be interesting to see what the response will be with this trailer. Besides the new music, we do get treated to an extended look at the attack on the Enterprise as well as a great final shot (which we won’t spoil here).

Geekscapists, what say you? Is the marketing campaign for Star Trek Beyond effective? If it were up to you, what music would you feature in a Star Trek trailer? Sound off in the comments below.

Star Trek Beyond is out in theaters Friday, July 22.

What happens when Nintendo and Atlus join forces to create an RPG game based on elements from Shin Megami Tensai and Fire Emblem? You get Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE–a game jam-packed with style, color, music, and so much anime-styled nonsense which makes this writer absolutely giddy with joy. Those expecting a story akin to that found in Fire Emblem: Birthright or Fire Emblem: Conquest should be prepared for something completely different. Emphasis on the word ‘different’.

WiiU_TokyoMirageSessions_FE_box

Alright, here’s the premise: an inter-dimensional evil has invaded modern-day Tokyo. Because of this threat, the city is overrun with monsters and–wait for it–a ‘barrage of music’. That’s right, folks. Somewhere in the depths of space-time, there’s a dimension where Nickleback reigns supreme and is out to destroy our way of life. The only way to avert certain doom rests on the proverbial shoulders of a gang of fluorescent hair-colored teens who, based on their style and rhythm, can summon the aid and powers of certain Fire Emblem characters.

WiiU_TokyoMirageSessions_FE_illustration_01

If you’ve played any game from Atlus, this kind of plot is absolutely normal. When one has played Disgaea, Persona, Code Princess, or any games from Atlus for that matter, the premise to Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE sounds pretty on point, and if any developer can create a game around that premise, no one could do it better than the folks at Atlus.

An Atlus/Nintendo RPG filled with music, turn-based combat, weapon crafting, dungeons, and over-the-top cinematics? We know; we can’t wait to play it either. Fans won’t have to wait long at all for Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE launches on Wii U next week on Friday, June 24!

Will you be picking this up? Are you a fan of Atlus? What is their best game of all time? Lets us know in the comments and we will discuss your responses on the next episode of the Geekscape Games Podcast!

The last time Paper Mario graced a Nintendo home console was back in 2007 when our flat hero was busy fighting Francis, Mr. L, Wracktail, and Count Bleck in Super Paper Mario. Now, after nine long years, the RPG franchise returns to consoles in Paper Mario: Color Splash for Wii U.

In this new adventure, Paper Mario finds himself on Prism Island where all the Toads have been drained of their color. As with previous Paper Mario titles, our titular hero will use the iconic hammer–only this time it is a Paint Hammer; just imagine the talents of Gallagher and Bob Ross rolled up into one truly effective household tool. In addition, the game will feature a new Battle Card system which will allow players to summon allies and objects to defeat enemies and bosses alike.

The game is visually stunning. After checking out the trailer below, be sure to scroll through our collection of screenshots; we are sure your eyes will pop as much as ours did.

Fans won’t have to wait too long as Paper Mario: Color Splash will be available this year on October 7.

PC gamers, rejoice!

Bethesda kicked off their E3 showcase this week by announcing the newest entry in of one of their most beloved and iconic first-person shooting franchises of all time: Quake Champions.

The arena-style shooter will combine the mythology behind the first Quake game with multiplayer aspects of Quake III Arena. Quake Champions will feature a roster of characters–each with their own unique powers and abilities. At the time of this writing, it is unknown how many characters the final roster will have, but the trailer featured below reveals at least a few.

“20 years ago, Quake set new standards for multiplayer competition and pushed the boundaries for graphics and gameplay,” said Tim Willits, Studio Director, id Software. “It’s important to all of us at id Software that Quake Champions remains true to the Quake legacy, and delivers the speed and gameplay our long-time fans expect, while also pressing forward by introducing innovative gameplay opportunities with new Champions and abilities.”

One of the more impressive aspects of Quake Champions is how it is designed and built for eSports, integrating competitive features for professional and amateur levels of play. With networks such as ESPN and TBS dedicating airtime of eSports, Bethesda is looking to make sure competitive Quake Champions players will get all the exposure and support they need to build and nurture their fan base.

Speaking of their fan base,  those attending QuakeCon will learn more details about Quake Champions. For more information about QuakeCon 2016 or to register to attend, please visit www.QuakeCon.org.

What say you, Geekscapists? How excited are you for Quake Champions? Let us know in the comment section below and we will mention you in the next episode of the Geekscape Games Podcast!

Jake Gyllenhaal is teaming up with Ubisoft once again to bring one of the best-selling games of 2016 to the big screen.

According to Variety, Gyllenhaal is set to star and produce a feature film based on Ubisoft’s ‘The Division‘ video game–a title that has been on the market for two months, but has set record sales for Ubisoft.

GettyImages-515290882.0

A script has yet to develop, but the film will more than likely follow the exploits of the Strategic Homeland Division who are trying to reestablish themselves after a smallpox outbreak decimates most of the country–leaving modern society vulnerable to criminal activity.

This will be Gyllenhaal’s second out starring as an Ubisoft hero. In 2010, the actor portrayed Prince Dastan in Disney’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which (believe it or not) is the highest-grossing video game film of all time.

Seriously. It grossed over $335 million dollars world-wide.

The Division is now Ubisoft’s fastest-selling product at the tune of $330 million in its first five days of release, and one can surely bet that Ubisoft is looking for the same result at the box office. With an Assassin’s Creed movie already on its way, this could be an incredibly successful year for the French-based company.

It appears Michael Keaton is going to become a birdman one more time.

Before Spider-Man had to deal with the likes of the Green Goblin, Electro, Rhino, and Doctor Octopus–our favorite webslinger had to do battle with Adrian Toomes, better known as The Vulture. The wait to see the villain on the big screen is finally over as Variety is reporting that award-winning actor Michael Keaton has officially signed on to play The Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming–scheduled for release in 2017.

Keaton will play opposite to Tom Holland, who will be reprising his role of Spider-Man from Captain America: Civil War. Joining them will be Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr., reprising their roles of Aunt May and Tony Stark/Iron Man respectively.

With Michael Keaton’s recent critical acclaim for his recent performances in the last two Academy Award-winning films–Birdman (2014) and Spotlight (2015), and now portraying one of Marvel’s original villains, it will be exciting to see what the man known and loved for his performances as Beetlejuice and Batman will bring to the role.

What other Spidey villains do you want to see? Kraven the Hunter? Mysterio? Hobgoblin? Kangaroo?

Actually, forget that last one…and let us never speak of him again.

Pokken Tournament was super effective against Street Fighter V in retail, as the fighting game from Nintendo and Bandai Namco outperformed Street Fighter V  in sales in the United States.

According to video game analyst ZhugeEX, who provides video game sales data and has access to early NPD reports, Pokken Tournament did very well against Street Fighter V here in the U.S.:

Though no specific numbers are provided, ZhugeEX does say that based from his information, more physical copies of Pokken Tournament were sold in the United States than Street Fighter V–even though Capcom released their game a full month before Pokken Tournament.

How could this be, you ask? Good question. How does the most recognizable fighting franchise in the world fail to meet sales expectations and underperforms to a game hybrid between Tekken and Pokemon? As discussed by many of us at the Geekscape Games Podcast, Street Fighter V feels more like a demo than a full retail game–especially when compared to the vanilla version of Street Fighter IV.

Suffering from a Story Mode which abandoned Street Fighter’s traditional formula, online matchmaking issues, and a number of bugs found in the PC version of the game, Capcom’s newest entry from its flagship franchise failed to become the retail juggernaut many thought it would be. Instead of selling the projected two million copies Capcom predicted, the latest entry in the Street Fighter franchise only managed to sell 1.4 million copies worldwide. Yes, Alex and Guile are in, but many fan favorites are painfully absent.

Where’s Akuma?!

Considering the 36 million people who make up the install base for the Playstation 4 far surpass that of the Wii U (which stands at nearly 13 million), it is surprising Street Fighter V couldn’t pull off the sales goal. Those who received review copies of the game reported how much Street Fighter V lacked in content, but one would assume that the name of ‘Street Fighter’ alone would move units. It should be noted that while sales for Street Fighter V are low, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the franchise is losing its popularity among the competitive fight scene. On the contrary, it’s quite the opposite.

As of April, over 4,000 Street Fighter V players have registered to compete at this year’s EVO Tournament in Las Vegas–making it the biggest tournament in the event’s history. Pokken Tournament has over 1,000 players registered at this year’s EVO as of this writing.

How can Capcom translate the game’s popularity into a financial gain? What can Nintendo and Bandai Namco do to capitalize on the success of Pokken Tournament? Let us know in the comments below and we will discuss your points on the next episode of the Geekscape Games Podcast!

It’s no secret that the Geekscape Games Podcast crew is just a bit critical of UbiSoft, and by ‘just a bit’ I mean ‘extremely’. While their business decisions in the past few years have made us collectively scratch our heads in bewilderment, today is one of those rare occasions in which we are thoroughly overjoyed by them.

Nearly ten years after its debut on XBOX 360 and PS3, the Assassin’s Creed franchise is taking the next step (or leap of faith) onto the big screen–and judging from the trailer which made its worldwide debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live–it looks absolutely fantastic!

The film features an original story as well as a brand new assassin by the name of Callum Lynch/Aguilar played by Michael Fastbender (X-Men: Age of Apocalypse). In addition, the film will star Jeremy Irons (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Brendan Gleeson (Edge of Tomorrow), and Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises).

Fans will get to see the live-action adaptation of the popular game franchise later this year on December 21.

What say you, Geekscapists? Does the trailer underwhelm, meet , or exceed your expectations? You can bet the Geekscape Games Podcast crew will have plenty to say about the trailer, and we would love to share your thoughts so sound off in the comment section below!

For those of us who grew up during the 80’s and had the privilege of having Saturday morning cartoons, get ready for the mother of all nostalgia bombs.

Paramount Pictures and Hasbro have announced that they are currently developing a cinematic universe comprised of Hasbro properties. Of course, this would involve popular franchises such as G.I Joe, but also franchises we haven’t seen in decades–namely Micronauts, Visionaries, ROM, and M.A.S.K.!

Your read that sentence correctly; Micronauts, Visionaries, ROM, and freakin’ M.A.S.K. are getting their own movies!

In order to create this new cinematic universe, Paramount and Hasbro have acquired the writing talents of Akiva Goldsman (“A Beautiful Mind”) who will serve as executive producer on each film of the Hasbro cinematic universe, Brian K. Vaughn (“Saga”, “Y: The Last Man”), Michael Chabon (“The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier & Clay“), Cheo Coker (Netflix’s “Luke Cage”), Nicole Perlman (“Guardians of the Galaxy”, “Captain Marvel”), Jeff Pinkner (“The Dark Tower”), Joe Robert Cole (“Black Panther”), Geneva Robertson (“Tomb Raider”), Lindsay Beer (“The Kingkiller Chronicle”), and Nicole Riegel (HBO’s “Soldier Girls”).

Hasbro’s film label Allspark Pictures will produce all the films and the group’s first meeting will take place this upcoming Monday.

What’s interesting to note in regards to the writing staff is the diverse backgrounds of faith, ethnicity, and gender– which Hasbro’s CCO Stephen Davis says is crucial to have in developing its new universe.

“We first and foremost put together a list of writers who we wanted to be in business with and could be the world-builders that we needed, but we want to be sure that in the room we have diverse perspectives, diverse backgrounds and diverse experiences.”

What say you, Geekscapists? Which Hasbro property are you most excited about seeing on the big screen? The 7 year-old version of J.C. is beside himself with glee knowing that M.A.S.K. is coming back!

Just when we thought we’ve seen enough incredible trailers, Warner Bros. gives us another.

Inspired by the book published in 2001, Fantastical Beasts and Where to Find Them takes place in 1926 (65 years before Harry Potter sets foot onto Hogwarts) and centers on Newt Scamander–a magizoologist who just completed a world-wide excursion to find and document all the magical creatures he could find. Upon arriving in New York, his magical briefcase–containing some of the creatures he’s discovered–is misplaced. With the possibility of those magical beasts running amuck throughout the city, Newt must find a way to get his briefcase and the creatures back before disaster strikes both muggle and wizarding communities alike.

Take a look at the trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments below! Will we get to see a young Albus Dumbledore? What other Harry Potter characters would you want to see? We will find out later this year when Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them comes to theaters November 18, 2016!

Charlize Theron’s days of sitting behind the wheel are not over yet. After a strong 2015, mainly stemming from her role as ‘Furiosa’ in Mad Max: Fury Road, Theron is now ready to test her driving skills in the next Fast and Furious movie.

Universal Pictures and the Emmy award-winning actress have agreed on a deal which would give her a feature role in the latest installment of the Fast and Furious franchise which is simply called ‘Fast 8’. The film is set to begin principal photography this May and will be directed by F. Gary Gray and will feature returning  cast members Vin, Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Jason Statham, and Tyrese Gibson.

With Charlize Theron joining such an all-star cast, it looks as if Fast 8 has a solid shot of surpassing the success of Furious 7, but what do you think? Is Theron a perfect fit or is she miscast? Let us know what you think!

Back in August at D23, our very own Eric Fransisco wrote a short article proclaiming “we all want a darker Star Wars“. Based from the new Star Wars: Rogue One trailer released this morning, director Gareth Edwards is giving all of us exactly that.

The trailer, which debuted today on Good Morning America, follows the exploits of  a band of Rebels who are tasked with what can only be described as a suicide mission: retrieve the plans for the Empire’s mega weapon–The Death Star. The film is scheduled for a December 2016 release date, but no specific day has been announced as of this writing.

Nothing will be spoiled for you here, so click the play button and enjoy, but afterwards, be sure to share in the conversation in the comments below where we will break down and discuss any Easter eggs or points of interest your fellow Geekscapists find.

The cast of Blade Runner 2 just added a ton of muscle this morning.

Alcon Entertainment has officially announced that Dave Bautista will join Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, and Robin Wright in Blade Runner 2, the official sequel to Ridley Scott’s iconic 1982 science fiction film.

Dave Bautista is better known from his role as Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy, and he recently appeared in Spectre–the latest entry in the James Bond film franchise. Blade Runner 2 is set to begin principal photography this July and will be directed by Denis Villenevue (Sicaro, Prisoners) with Ridley Scott serving as executive producer.

There is a ton of secrecy behind the plot of Blade Runner 2, but the only thing we do know about the films story is that it will take place a number of decades after the events of the original film. Not much to go on (we know), but we will take anything we can get.

At this point, the cast looks solid, and with Ridley Scott involved in the project, fans have much to look forward to.

What kind of story would you like to see Blade Runner 2 head into? Sound off in the comments below!

The Killing Joke–by Brian Bolland, Alan Moore, and John Higgins–stands as not only one of the greatest Batman comics ever made, but as one of the best graphic novels ever written. It gave fans a look at the origins of the Joker, set up the events leading to the death of Jason Todd, and witnessed (perhaps the most vivid memory for those who read it back in 1988) the Joker’s brutal attack on Barbara Gordon. Now, 28 years after its release, The Killing Joke is getting its own animated feature scheduled for release this summer–and we have a look at the first official trailer!

Fans will be elated to know that Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are reprising their roles as Batman and The Joker for this film, and for those attending the San Diego Comic-Con, Batman: The Killing Joke will make its world-wide debut at the convention!

Check out the trailer and let us know what you think in the comments below!

This week is a big one for Star Wars fans. Before the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on digital outlets this Friday, the current season of Star Wars: Rebels will end in a special hour-long episode on March 30.

In a season in which we saw Hera, Kanan, Ezra, Sabine, Zeb, Chopper, and Captain Rex deal with Darth Vader and the new Inquisitors (Seventh Sister and Fifth Brother), fans will finally get to see some key moments teased all season long. The inevitable showdown between Ashoka Tano and her former Jedi Master-now-Sith Lord Darth Vader is arguably the moment all fans of the series have been waiting for this season, but there are plenty of other moments that will reach their conclusion. Will Ezra be tempted by the dark side of the Force by Darth Maul? Will we see (to use wrestling terminology) a face turn from Agent Kallus? Is the crossguard lightsaber which Ezra finds related to an ancient order of the Knights of Ren?

Hopefully many of these questions (and more) will be addressed and answered in the Star Wars: Rebels hour-long finale this Wednesday at 9 P.M. PST on Disney XD.

Sunday afternoon, Eric Medalle, a Creative Design Director at The Pokemon Company, was taking one of his two daughters on a drive through Seward Park in Seattle when, at approximately 1:30 P.M., a Douglas fir tree fell on his SUV–killing Madelle and inflicting minor injuries to his daughter. Medalle was 42.

From Pokemon Soul Silver/Heart Gold to the recent Pokemon Alpha Sapphire/Omega Red entries, Medalle was responsible for the graphic design and artwork of much of the Pokemon games released in the last five years. Additionally, he was responsible for much of the art and logos in the Pokemon Trading Card Game.

Medalle is survived by his wife and two daughters–ages 6 and 2. A fund has begun to help see Medalle’s wish of helping his children attend college. As stated on the YouCare website which is hosting fundraiser, “Eric’s expectation for his daughters was college, and to honor that expectation, we can ensure that college remains a reality for his girls.  It is important that Isa and Nico are able to learn and grow, to discover what they love and pursue it to the fullest, just as their father did.”

Those wishing to contribute to the fund can do so here.

We here at Geekscape offer our heartfelt condolences to the Medalle family.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game and TMNT IV: Turtles in Time are some of the finest examples of co-op video games ever to grace the arcades. From its fantastic gameplay, incredible soundtrack, and brilliant stage design, the classic TMNT arcade games still hold a special place in the hearts of those who grew up in the late 80’s and early 90’s. It has been quite some time since a TMNT game has lived up to the standards of its predecessors, but based on the new trailer which debuted on IGN earlier today, Activision and Platinum Games may very well be on their way in bringing everyone’s favorite mutant teens back into their video game glory days.

Coming to XBOX One, XBOX 360, PS4, PS3, and PC on May 24, TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan features local and online 4-player co-op, unique fighting moves for each member of the TMNT squad, cel-shaded graphics, and classic villains  Beebop, Rocksteady, Shredder, Krang, and Karai in an original story penned by IDW Publishing’s TMNT writer Tom Waltz.

So who’s your favorite hero in a halfshell? For me, it has to be Raphael. What about you? Sound off in the comments below and check out the new trailer for the game!

After raking in over 2 billion dollars world wide, Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be available on Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere on April 1, and comes home to Blu-ray/DVD on April 5. According to StarWars.com, the Blu-ray/DVD set will include  a number of extras including deleted scenes, table read sessions, a behind the scenes look on the design and construction of BB-8, a feature on John Williams, and a slew of other specials highlighting the creatures, fight sequences, and special effects from the film.

Additionally, a number of major retailers will offer exclusive editions, but what will they come with and how much will they go for? Fear not, because we are here to break down all four exclusive editions from Best Buy, Disney Store, Target and Walmart in order to find the best one for you. Let’s get started!

Best Buy

It makes perfect sense that the store which specializes in high-quality television sets offer an exclusive set from one of the most visually stunning films from last year, but their incentives may leave many feeling underwhelmed. Best Buy will be the only place where fans can get the film in an exclusive SteelBook packaging featuring Kylo Ren, Captain Phasma, and the gorgeous shot of the Millenium Falcon and the First Order TIE Fighters flying over the sand dunes of Jakku.

forceawakens-bluray-combo-bestbuy-1024x427

At $29.99, this exclusive is the priciest of the bunch. There are lower priced options from other retailers, but if the SteelBook packaging is to your liking, it is available to preorder here.

Target

Target’s exclusive is the only version of Star Wars: The Force Awakens to contain on-disc content not available from any other retailer. Aside from their exclusive box art featuring Kylo Ren, Rey, BB-8, Finn, Han Solo, and General Organa, the Blu-ray/DVD/Digital set also contains over 20 minutes of bonus content featuring interviews with Daisy Ridley and John Boyega and a feature on the film’s weapons and costumes (take note, cosplayers!). It is also $5 less than Best Buy’s offering.

Target’s exclusive Star Wars: The Force Awakens set is the only collection featuring the bonus interviews and weapon/costume featurette.

This set is currently listed at $24.99 and is available for preorder here.

Walmart

Fans came away loving BB-8, and Walmart’s exclusive clearly has those fans in mind when it comes to the lovable droid.  This particular edition has two great things going for it. At $19.96, the Walmart exclusive is currently the best priced option among all retailers. Secondly, I mean–just look at the box art! BB-8, in all his glory, graces the cover of the Blu-ray/DVD set. There are no other bonuses in terms of lithographs, on-disc content, or SteelBook casing, but at such a low price and everyone’s favorite new droid featured on the cover, Walmart’s exclusive may be the one fans may go after first.forceawakens-bluray-combo-walmart-768x913

The set is currently priced at $19.96 and is available for preorder here.

Disney Store

For those who want more physical bonuses with their Star Wars: The Force Awakens set, the Disney Store offers a great incentive. Those who preorder will get four limited edition lithographs featuring Rey and BB-8, Kylo Ren, Han Solo and Chewbacca, and the gorgeous Apocalypse Now-inspired First Order TIE Fighter shot. Not only that, but the Disney Store is throwing in a $10 off coupon on a future purchase of $40 or more.

At $24.99, it is a difficult deal to pass up. Those wanting to preorder can do so here.

I am opting for the Disney Store exclusive, due in part for the lithographs; they are going to look great hanging in my classroom and possibly earn me some geek cred among my students. The Wii U eShop offers some of the best video games on the market today. Games like Runbow, Mutant Mudds, Pushmo, Gunman Clive HD Collection, and Shovel Knight expand an already impressive lineup of quality titles offered on Nintendo’s home and handheld consoles. Last December, Shin’en added to the list with FAST Racing Neo–a futuristic racing game which has received critical acclaim from numerous media outlets.

JC got a chance to ask Shin’en a few questions about their latest game, their influences, and what fans can expect in the future.

Geekscape: First off, congratulations on the overwhelming positive reaction for
FAST Racing Neo. From concept art, development, to seeing the game hit
#1 on the Nintendo Wii U eShop—how satisfying is it to see a game
received so well?

Shin’en: We are very happy how the game turned out and about the players reactions. Many of our previous titles also topped the WiiWare or eShop charts but no game sold so FAST 🙂 So from the business side, we are very satisfied. From the development side we are also very pleased.

We never worked so long and hard on a single game, but in the end everything came really nicely together!

Geekscape: What were some key areas the team wanted to focus on in FAST Racing Neo
that perhaps weren’t implemented or explored fully in FAST Racing League?

Shin’en: Our main focus was to make the game very accessible from the beginning while still being a good challenge. We think we really nailed that part. Another big topic was the feeling of speed. We almost needed a year to find the perfect balance to make the players believe that they never played any racing game that fast, while still being fully in control. That was a big challenge.

screenshot23

Geekscape: FAST Racing Neo looks and plays like a beautiful marriage between F-Zero GX and Ikaruga–while still being able to maintain its own identity.

What were some of your favorite racing games growing up, and how much of
an influence, if any, did those games have on the FAST series?

Shin’en: Our favorite racing game is still Wave Race 64. It has a perfect blend of great gameplay, great tech and marvelous audio. Of course, we played all racing games from the past when we started with FAST Racing Neo, but we learned quickly we would need to do things very differently.

Wave_Race_64_(NA)

So in terms of physics and vehicle handling, I don’t think we have much in common with previous sci-fi racers. Also graphically, besides some obvious nods, we think FAST does really stand on its own.

Geekscape: We here at Geekscape are extremely competitive when it comes to racing games. Have you held any kind of ‘friendly’ tournaments at work, and if so, who is the best Fast Racing NEO player among you?

We played almost every day a tournament. Peter, who did the game testing, is usually on top of the pack followed by Martin. Bernhard is also quite good, although he still refuses to use the ‘leaning’ controls 🙂

screenshot24

Geekscape: What can we look forward to from Shin’en in 2016?

Our first release is planned for January 2016. It’s an update for FAST Racing Neo which will add new features and a much improved and stable online experience. We also really look out for Nintendo NX.

Disneyland’s The Haunted Mansion is one of the theme park’s longest running attractions. Since 1969, many foolish mortals, aboard their doom buggies, have braved dark hallways, witnessed seances from levitating heads, participated in swinging wakes, and have taken part in the graveyard shenanigans along with the 999 happy haunts. Now, writer Joshua Williamson (Ghosted) and artist Jorge Coelho (Loki: Agent of Asgard) invite fans to discover more about their beloved ghost hosts in the upcoming The Haunted Mansion limited comic book series beginning March 2016.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Williamson says, “There are running themes throughout the whole series that we’re going to be doing, but I think when people read all five issues, I want them to have that same feeling they have when they get off the ride. If I can accomplish that, then I really feel like I’ve done something with it. Whether you’re a Marvel fan, a Haunted Mansion fan, a Disney fan, or even a comics fan, if you can get that feeling – that rush of fear and happiness — I think that would be great.”

In addition to the limited comic book series run, a book dedicated to the numerous Haunted Mansion attractions across all Disneyland Parks will be released in July 2016 entitled Disney Parks Presents: The Haunted Mansion--including a CD containing the ‘Grim Grinning Ghosts‘ song heard on the latter part of the Disneyland Haunted Mansion ride. Also in 2016, a new chapter book series entitled Tales from the Haunted Mansion, will feature stories from some of the 999 ghosts (please let it be The Bride!).
