I’m slowly transitioning Weekly Reads into Best Bets. Best Bets is going to be the place for quick recommendations and thoughts on new releases. It will be a curation of what I think is the best of comics for that week. In contrast to that, I will start a new article that will be much more focused pieces that I’ve been itching to write.

To summarize:
– This will be the last “Weekly Reads”
– A lot of the content here will be discussed in “Best Bets” instead
– Look forward to more interesting comic-related content

Now, how about we stop talking about talking about comics, and start talking about comics!

👎 – Skip, read at your own risk
👌 – Okay, not great, not bad, you might find something to like here
đŸ’Ș – Great, highly recommended

Image

đŸ’Ș Eclipse #1
Eclipse was this weeks Best Bet, and I’d say we were right to say so 😊.

đŸ’Ș Kill Or Be Killed #2
This book is must read, a little dark, but very accessible. If The Black Monday Murders is too intimidating, try this book on for size. You won’t be disappointed.

💁 Paper Girls #9
… Still haven’t found the time to read it. 😅

DC

👌Aquaman #6
After the first two issues, I didn’t think much of this title but since then I’ve been won over with each issue.

👌Batman #6
This book contains one of the nicest drawings of Gotham that you’ll ever see, an emotional Batman, and a big-time villain reveal. Feels like a transition issue between story arcs but even so, it was very well done.

👌Cyborg – Rebirth #1

This book provides a good introduction to Cyborg if you are unfamilar with the character (like I was). These Rebirth titles should be free as it doesn’t come close to the quality of a lot of the other DC titles at this price point. I’m interested in what happens next but as a prune back my DC titles, this probably won’t make the cut.

đŸ’Ș Green Arrow #6

The new arc begins.

“SINS OF THE MOTHER”! Following the shocking events with the Ninth Circle, Green Arrow’s wayward sister/sidekick Emiko travels to Japan on a quest to destroy the crime lords who control her mother, Shado, the assassin who murdered Oliver Queen.

Hopefully it’s a good as the last. Green Arrow is one of the best ongoing DC titles.

🙅 Harley Quinn #3
… Not enough time to keep up with this series.

👎 Justice League #4

Surprisingly meh title. Hasn’t established a flow after four issues. Who knows maybe I’m just dumb but I’d recommend any character from the Justice League’s solo book over this.

đŸ’Ș Nightwing #4

The fourth issue concluded the “Better Than Batman” story arc in tremendous fashion. This title is really starting to get into a groove.

👌 Supergirl #1

I love the art style of this book. Everything else about it is decent, I think I’m just a little Super’d out.

👌 Superman #6

The moon gets the crap kicked out of it. I’m not enjoying this as much as Action Comics but it has had some pretty sweet moments.

Marvel

Nothing to read here…

Briefly: We got our first peek at Supergirl‘s Superman late last month, and The CW today debuted a slick new poster for the series’ anticipated return, reminding us that The CW has a new hero, and that Supergirl has a new home.

Supergirl hits The CW on Monday, October 10th, and we cannot wait to see what comes next for Kara and company!

Take a look at the image below, and let us know what you think!

Warner Bros. and Lego really brought the hype to Lego Dimensions when they revealed Year 2 at the 2016 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), showing off several new franchises that will be brought to the game, including Sonic the Hedgehog, the (all female) Ghostbusters, Adventure Time and several others!

Lego-Dimensions-Wave-2-Final-Image-1024x563A list of new franchises adding on to Lego Dimensions in Year 2!

Among this new wave, Supergirl will also be entering the Lego Dimensions universe. But here’s the catch. Supergirl will be a limited edition figure added into the starter pack, meaning if you already own the game, you’ll have to purchase another starter pack just to obtain the Supergirl figure.

So far, Warner Bros. has not announced any future availability outside of the starter pack. While she will not be completely inaccessible within the game as you will be able to hire her temporarily as a hire-a-hero character, for players like me who have bought the starter pack already, this is a little frustrating to say the least.

We can always hope that Warner Bros. will make Supergirl available, even for a limited amount of time, singularly or within a team pack. But for now, the best we can do is sit tight and wait for any further updates on Year 2.

Lego Dimensions will be releasing their second season starting September 27th.

How do you feel about the exclusive add-in of Supergirl? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Supergirl

Moments before the Injustice 2 development team took the stage at San Diego Comic-Con to reveal more details about the highly-anticipated fighting game, Geekscape managed to sit down with the game’s director Ed Boon to get answers to many of the fans’ burning questions. The Injustice 2 Director is quickly asked what new changes and/or features will be coming.

We started off with what people expected and hoped we would do: bigger roster and include characters that we couldn’t include in the last game, but the biggest thing that we added is a thing we’re calling the ‘Gear System’–this whole system of acquiring costume pieces that actually level up your character, and this constant search for the best version of your character.

The Gear System will be a amped up version of the one found in the Apple/Android version of Injustice: Gods Among Us.
The Gear System will be an amped up version of the one found in the Apple/Android version of Injustice: Gods Among Us.

For example, if you use Batman you can make him a little bit better if you find, you know, special gauntlets that increases his damage a little bit more. You can find a utility belt that makes his interaction with the [interactive stage] backgrounds a little bit more effective–so you’ll constantly be doing that whole loot drop system: a constant search and pursuit for your ultimate version, your custom version of Batman, Superman, Aquaman, etc.

So that’s the big new feature that wasn’t in Injustice: Gods Among Us.

The next question brought to the table asked how much of an influence does the current run of DC films and television shows (Green Arrow, Flash, and Supergirl) have on the development of the game in terms of move sets and costumes.

Oh! We draw so much–you know–the thing about these DC characters is they’re represented in so many games, comics, movies, animated T.V. shows, video games, and we are huge fans and students of these characters; we are constantly watching those things, and often times we’ll see something and say, “that’ll be so cool in a game.”

Ed Boon wasn’t willing to specify just what those things were that would be ‘cool in a game’, so he was then asked if any studios have come to him personally about adding a specific scene from classic DC films or animated shows.

No. It’s more of like us paying an homage or a salute to those kind of things.

Speaking of DC shows, Katie Cassidy, who portrays Black Canary on Green Arrow, posted this now deleted image on her Instagram account back on May which carried the tagline “The process of game making! Freakin awesome!!”

kcbc
Does this tease a Black Canary entry in Injustice 2? If so, does that mean we can expect characters and skins from other DC shows and films?

Fans speculated that due to the elaborate motion capture camera setup, coupled with the familiar fighting stance she’s in, that Black Canary will ultimately be included in Injustice 2.

We are absolutely open to those ideas. We’ve done a little bit of it like it. We had the Man of Steel Superman. So we are constantly looking for crossover things to bring in. A lot of the fans of these games watch the movies and see the animated shows, so there’s a cool novelty in adding those aspects into the game. The thing about DLC is that you can go back after the game and say, “now wait a minute! Let’s add this cool thing!”

No clear ‘yes’ or ‘no’ was given, but it would be difficult to imagine–due to the popularity of Green Arrow, Supergirl, and Flash–that characters and/or skins from those shows fail to make it into the game as either in-game unlockables or future DLC packs–which brings us to the next obvious question: are there plans for DLC packs upon release?

Absolutely. That’s part of our cadence–release the game and continue to support the game. I think we are probably going to go further with DLC with [Injustice 2] than any of our previous games with packs of characters and costumes–and some of our costumes will be a gear piece; if you put on a certain gear piece, you might switch over to a different character. That is going to make finding the pieces super fun.

For those familiar with games like Destiny, the loot system can be either kind or cruel. Before players begin to panic over the prospect of a loot system which mimicks the aforementioned game, the gear system will more than likely mirror the one found in the Injustice game for Apple and Android. The mobile incarnation of the game allowed players to use in-game currency or actual cash to open digital card packs which awarded the player new DC characters and gear pieces to improve them.

No word was mentioned over how one acquires gear pieces or the chances of landing a rare item. The conversation then moves to whether or not there were any features or characters NetherRealm wanted to include in Injustice: Gods Among Us, but due to time and/or budget constraints they were unable to do so.

A lot of that falls into the category of characters. The DC Universe is all about the characters, and so there’s always that [conversation] of ‘what’s the roster?’ ‘Who can we include?’ We’re going to have a bigger roster than we had in the last game, but at the same time we want to have a lot more newness.

Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle will be playable characters in Injustice 2.
Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle will be playable characters in Injustice 2.

We just don’t want to just start with the Injustice: Gods Among Us cast and then add a few more. Half [of the roster] will be new. The other half are returning [characters]–just to keep things fresh as possible. We absolutely feel the anxiety and nervousness of ‘Oh, God. We hope Injustice 2 lives up to it’, and I think the whole gear thing is the answer to what makes this game better than the first.

At the time of this writing, the only members of the original Injustice roster making a return to Injustice 2 are Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman. The complete Injustice: God Among Us roster (including all DLC packs) featured a total of 30 playable characters.

Injustice Roster
Injustice 2 will feature a larger roster than Injustice: Gods Among US, but only half of the original roster will apparently be returning .

Going by what Ed Boon confirmed in that half of the Injustice: Gods Among Us roster will return, that means only 11 of the remaining 26 characters will make it to Injustice 2. Who those characters will be is anyone’s guess.

Ed Boon was asked what he feels is the team’s greatest accomplishment in terms of translating a character from the comics to the video game.

I think our visual fidelity and the method in we tell our story. Story in fighting games is like a bad punch line. It’s a joke. There’s no coherent stories in fighting games.

We wanted to do the opposite.

We have a multi-hour cinematic experience that you play where we are telling a very elaborate story. We hired professional actors who we think can play the role of these characters. We are trying to tell something as close to a great cinematic experience where you participate in the fight. In fact, the Injustice comics and games are telling one, big long story. and time wise, the  first Injustice comic was chapter one, Injustice: Gods Among Us was chapter two, the next Injustice comic is chapter three, and [Injustice 2] is chapter four.

When asked about the chances of seeing Injustice as a full-length feature film:

‘Some people have drawn parallels, we’ve actually never sat with the movie people and collaborated, or anything like that. Injustice is our universe, [set apart from] the DC movie universe and the animated stuff, and the comics. I’ve been asked, you know, ‘was this inspired from the movie?’ or ‘was the movie inspired by this?’ We’ve been just telling our own story, but there might be some coincidental similarities.’

I was curious and asked if any actors from the current crop of DC shows and movies have approached Ed Boon in an attempt to get their character in Injustice 2.

We definitely had a lot of discussions about guest characters. In Injustice: Gods Among Us, we had Scorpion from Mortal Kombat, and he was actually the most downloaded of all the Injustice characters.

InjusticeScorpion
Scorpion a.k.a. ‘Mr. Popular’.

There’s always a discussion of ‘would it be cool to have this character in Injustice?’, and I’ve certainly had people ask me if I can get their guy in the game, but it’s a pretty long process. A lot of discussion, and it definitely doesn’t boil down to ‘do we want him in? Okay. He’s in!’

There’s licenses and stuff like that.

Injustice 2 is scheduled for release next year.

Be sure to keep it locked onto Geekscape this week as we have interviews with Phil Lamar (Aquaman) and Laura Bailey (Supergirl) coming out this Wednesday and Thursday!

Briefly: We’re still a few months away from Supergirl‘s anticipated second season premiere (on it’s new home on The CW), and today the network debuted our very first look at Teen Wolf‘s Tyler Hoechlin as Superman.

We still have no idea just how Superman will incorporate into the series, or how much he’ll be hanging around (and limiting our time with Kara), but in any case, we cannot wait for this one to come back to television.

Take a look at the first-look image below, and be sure to let us know if you’re looking forward to Supergirl‘s return.

SupergirlSuperman

After making the jump to the CW, Supergirl aims to one-up its first season and dazzle new and existing viewers with their second season. Supergirl will be airing on Monday’s, which will be followed by The Flash on Tuesdays, Arrow on Wednesdays, and Legends of Tomorrow on Thursdays. Fans of DCTV are in for a treat, should Supergirl deliver!

Unfortunately for us, Supergirl has just begun filming, meaning that there was no new footage to show us during the panel. Instead, we were treated to a sizzle reel that showed key moments in Supergirl‘s first season. After that, the panel came out, most of which was the main cast. Tyler Hoechlin was there as a sort of coming out party for Superman. Plenty of fun tidbits with the cast happened during the panel, some of which I was able to capture. Check it out below!

Aside from the funny moments, a few things were confirmed for season 2. First off, the panel briefly discussed the now confirmed four-part crossover event that is happening approximately eight episodes into the season. However, they did not let on how exactly Supergirl would be introduced into the ArrowFlash universe. I’m sure creators are exploring every avenue they can to bring the characters together. I feel that everyone assumes Kara will make an appearance on the Earth we know in Arrow and The Flash, but don’t be surprised if characters from the later two shows appear in National City!

Furthermore, show creators stated that even though we do have an inclusion of Superman on the show, the focus will not deviate from Supergirl. This is crucial as the show should stick to what the show is actually about. Still, you should expect to see some tension between Superman and Supergirl on what it means to be a hero. Of course, we do know that Superman has been doing this for a little while longer than Kara, but that doesn’t mean Kara doesn’t have handle on what she’s done in her first year as Supergirl.

In regards to Alex, we should be finding out a lot more about her character and her backstory in this next season. Actress Chyler Leigh, who plays Alex on the show, is deeply excited to see where showrunners take Alex next.

As for character romances, a Kara-Jimmy romance was hinted on for early next season. Jeremy Jordan, who plays Winn on the show, also hinted at a potential love interest. And of course, how could we forget Lynda Carter? Her role wasn’t exactly discussed in detail for the show, but because Superman and Supergirl are now in one place, we should expect that at the very least the President of the United States would take notice.

Supergirl premiers Monday, October 10th!

Recently, I was able to get in touch with Blake Neely, composer of all of your favorite DCTV shows running on the CW. From Arrow to DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Blake Neely has scored it all. By now, you’ve heard your favorite musical numbers on Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow. Now, here’s what Neely has to say on shaping the iconic sound behind the DC Universe.

Arrow 410

How were you approached to take on your first DCTV series? Were there any apprehensions?

I’ve worked with Greg Berlanti for 14 years, from his first show Everwood. In 2012, he handed me a script to Arrow and said, “This year, we are doing something a bit different.” I had no idea this would be the beginning of an onslaught of superhero shows in the DC Universe of iconic characters. My only apprehensions were to do the Green Arrow character justice, since the responsibility of musically representing such a decades-old character was a bit intimidating for a composer.

How well versed were you in the Green Arrow lore when you signed up Arrow? Did your previous knowledge of the character change your approach to the project in way that was different from a show like The Mentalist?

I was always a DC Comics appreciator. Aquaman was the first comic I bought as a child, and for some reason the DC characters always resonated with me the most. Whether it was Aquaman, Batman, Superman, The Flash or any number of others, I always gravitated toward DC. However, while I knew of the Green Arrow, I hadn’t followed him. Greg’s script was my introduction, and I was forever hooked. My approach was very different than approaching any other show. This was a character steeped in mythology and fan-base, not just a new character (like Patrick Jane of The Mentalist). But as a composer, my approach wasn’t different, in so much as I like to write something appropriate for any character and hopefully make it stick to the visual. The only difference in approach was that this had quite a bit of fan expectancy to it.

Could you briefly walk me through the process of scoring an episode for any of the DCTV shows you work on?

I generally get a week from receiving the final cut of an episode to its final mix (which is about 2 days before it airs on TV). My process on a first (pilot) episode is to go into a dark room, surround myself with images of the character, and attempt to capture that image musically. I write a suite of ideas, sounds, and themes and then hope it sticks to the image once the show is filmed. But on a weekly basis, I watch the episode and approach each scene dramatically with music that fits the scene. My goal is always to enhance the story-telling and support the action (whether emotional or brutal or cerebral) with the music, while trying to somehow stay in the background so that the audience only subliminally appreciates the music, and not bring music to the forefront. Otherwise, they are taken out of the story.

The Flash 221 Tombstone

The Flash has a very unique sound to it. What influenced the music behind some of Barry’s most emotional scenes?

Barry Allen is a very different character from Oliver Queen. He is a scientist, a bit awkward, brilliant, and later superhuman. What I wanted to achieve musically was multiple layers. Whereas Oliver Queen is more dark, brooding and immediate, Barry is more complex. The layering and subtext in the music helps in his emotionality. I still use similar orchestration with these characters, whether it be simple piano or orchestra, but there are more layers to Barry. In my mind, as heroes, Arrow gets a more upfront sound with aggression and realism, while The Flash has a forward-momentum and almost fragile heroic sound. I come to this from the idea that Arrow always knows he will win, while The Flash is much more vulnerable when he is called to action. It’s extremely esoteric, because it’s just a bunch of music notes flying around, but this is always the approach.

the flash 409

The Flash also pays homage to a number of DC Comics villains, some of which aren’t known to mainstream audiences. How do you go about composing a character theme for a reoccurring villain, like Wentworth Miller’s Captain Cold?

Greg gave me excellent direction on Captain Cold. He said, “This is a great love affair. Cold and Flash will always be chasing each other.” For whatever reason this made me develop a long arch sort of theme for Cold. The harmonies are never resolved. The melody is always reaching and expanding. Never reaching full consummation. With each new villain that is introduced on The Flash or Arrow, I like to sit back and think about the mythology, research their importance, talk with the producers about their desires for the character, and then attempt to make an appropriate theme. Some can sustain a simple sound “theme,” while others (like Cold or Ra’s al Guhl or Vandal Savage) require a full-blown theme and sound world to do their evil business in.

Legends 108 Sara

Legends of Tomorrow season one was unique in that we essentially saw a different time period with every episode. Did you ever have to adjust your approach or musical cues depending on what time period the heroes were in?

I did this a few times in the season. The most apparent were Russia and the Wild West. But for the most part, I felt like music should be the glue to the show we were in. Yes, we were in 1975 or 2147 or the 50s, but we were still watching LEGENDS. I felt it important to only provide a flavor or the time but let the audience rely on costumes and sets for the actual time period. This is a band of “time pirates,” as I early on began referring to them, so we need to musically stay with the team.

Has the cast and/or crew for any one of the DCTV shows you’ve worked on sat in on a scoring session? If so, what was the experience like?

I’ve never had the cast at the scoring or even my studio. However, I have done the opposite: I’ve visited the sets and even gone to dinner with the cast to get to know them. It’s not helpful to the writing of the episodes, but it’s helpful to the collaborative nature of these shows. We are all building a huge universe together. Why not know your counterparts? This has even led to a possible collaboration with Stephen Amell on a side project. I would love for the cast to come to a scoring session someday, but with shooting 8 days a week, I have doubts that they can possibly ever bear the time.

For anyone who’s looking at you as having their dream job, what advice would you give them?

Never give up. I grew up in Paris, Texas without the Internet or any possible connection to Hollywood. And I made it. I’m doing exactly what I dreamed of! Nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it.

FlashArrow

What persuades you to keep scoring DC television shows? What are the unique benefits to working in TV?

DC and Greg Berlanti have been incredibly loyal, incredibly supportive and wildly appreciative of my work. Why would I ever deny a chance to work on a new character or project with them? The benefits of working in TV, to me, are the ability to work again and again with these characters. If I begin an idea in Episode 1, I can continue and evolve it through to Episode 23 and beyond. It’s a never-ending sequel. With film, you get one, maybe two, chances to evolve your ideas. With TV, you get episodes and seasons upon seasons to continue your ideas. It moves way too quickly, and you have to be very prolific, but it’s very fulfilling to have the time with these storylines.

One of my favorite musical cues/themes are your Nanda Parbat themes that pop up every now and then on Arrow. How did go about crafting a score that fits that very unique setting?

Those were a lot of fun. I absolutely loved the arrival of Ra’s al Guhl. It sent me into an Eastern style of music harmonies and scales and instrumentation. This caused an evolution and exploration of sound that might capture the modern yet other-worldly feeling of Nanda Parbat, Nyssa, Ra’s and the ninjas. One of my favorite musicians in the world, Chris Bleth, brought me a wealth of treasures in duduks, dizis, neys, and other instruments, which we incorporated into the score. This was enhanced further by the haunting vocals of my friend, Sherri Chung, who was introduced during Oliver’s “death scene” with Ra’s in Ep 308 “The Climb.” It just grew from there with ethnic percussion, thick soundscapes and orchestration that hopefully made the audience feel like they were in another world far from Starling City.

Legends of Tomorrow 106 Banner

Have any actors commented on their individual themes?

Yes. Stephen Amell was very vocal in his appreciation of what I do. And there was an amazing Tweet from Grant Gustin about my score to one of the episodes. Oh, and Jimmy Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) said some incredibly nice things about the Supergirl score. But my best “theme” moment was when my son was playing Lego Batman. He said “Dad, come up and see this.” I went to his room, and he had just opened a new level. He played and Lego Batman walked into a door and we saw Lego Green Arrow, and all of a sudden my Arrow theme started playing. That was a moment when I realized that what I was doing was creating a small iconic stamp on these characters.

Some of the most iconic musical scores are from television. Do you have any peers whose music you enjoy immensely?

It’s a really enjoyable thing to say that my peers and a few of my heroes are also my friends. We are appreciative of what each other are doing, but it’s nice when it remains non-competitive. Do I have favorites? Of course. Will I divulge? Absolutely not!

The Flash 213

How does it feel to be setting the tone for the DCTV television landscape?

It feels amazing, but it feels incredibly heavy. I would never say that it’s a burden, because that is a negative term. But it feels like carrying a torch that will be handed off again in the future to another runner. For now, I need to carry the torch as high as it has ever been raised and hope it doesn’t get blown out by the wind. The success of these shows, the fanbase of these shows, and the expectancy of these shows is immense. Far bigger than myself. I must do all that I can to uphold the legacy, protect the mythology, and never denegrate the importance of this world that was created way before I was. I’m up for the challenge every day, but it never escapes me how important it can be.

Is there any DC character you’d like to see appear on any of the DCTV shows?

Aquaman. Please. First comic I bought. For whatever reason, a lifetime favorite.

The Flash 208

What’s the best story you have regarding anything DCTV-related in your years working with the respective shows?

My favorite story goes back to the beginning. Greg Berlanti and I had long discussions about what he envisioned for the sound of ARROW. I went away for a few weeks and wrote and wrote and wrote ideas. I developed themes for the show and then brought him to my studio and nervously played the “Oliver Queen Suite.” After hearing it, he stood up and said “Great. Perfect. I love it.” And as he left my studio and the door was closing behind him, I heard him whistling the theme. I thought to myself, “Success.”

Some of the most fantastic panels have taken place inside of Hall H on Saturday night’s these past few years. However, we’re in for a change as it seems DCTV is doing away with our Hall H after dark parties. Instead, Warner Bros. Television has opted for owning Ballroom 20 for what seems to be the majority of Saturday. While this sounds great too, it’s also worth mentioning that Ballroom 20 does not sit nearly as many people has Hall H does. This may spell trouble for anyone looking to attend any one of DCTV’s panels, including Gotham and in addition to iZombie.

What’s also troubling here is that DCTV panels seem to be going on during the daytime on Saturday. This means DC fans may have to choose between a potential Justice League panel and their favorite DCTV show.

That being said, WBTV seems to have spreads its wings this year, even hosting a panels on Sunday! Check these listings and let us know where you’re heading this SDCC!

People of Earth centers on skeptical journalist Ozzie Graham (Cenac) who investigates a support group to write about its members’ supposed alien encounters. The more he digs into their oddball claims, however, the more he realizes a semblance of truth to their stories and, possibly, even signs that point to his own alien abduction. Produced by Conaco in association with Warner Horizon Television, People of Earth is coming this fall to TBS. Room 6BCF

6:30 p.m.-7:20 p.m. Riverdale Pilot Screening and Q&A — Things aren’t always what you expect in Riverdale. Based on the iconic characters from Archie Comics and produced by Berlanti Productions (The Flash, Supergirl, Blindspot, Everwood), this one-hour drama is a bold, subversive take on the surreality of small-town life. As a new school year begins, the town of Riverdale is reeling from the recent, tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom — and nothing feels the same. Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) is still the all-American teen, but the summer’s events made him realize that he wants to pursue a career in music — and not follow in his dad’s footsteps — despite the sudden end of his forbidden relationship with Riverdale’s young music teacher, Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel). Which means Archie doesn’t have anyone who will mentor him — certainly not singer Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), who is only focused on her band, the soon-to-be-world-famous Pussycats. It’s all weighing heavily on Archie’s mind — as is his fractured friendship with budding writer and fellow classmate Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse). Meanwhile, girl-next-door Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) is anxious to see her crush Archie after being away all summer, but she’s not quite ready to reveal her true feelings to him. And Betty’s nerves — which are hardly soothed by her overbearing mother, Alice (MĂ€dchen Amick) — aren’t the only thing holding her back. When a new student, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), arrives in town from New York with her mother Hermione (Marisol Nichols), there’s an undeniable spark between she and Archie, even though Veronica doesn’t want to risk her new friendship with Betty by making a play for Archie. And then there’s Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch)
Riverdale’s Queen Bee is happy to stir up trouble amongst Archie, Betty, and Veronica, but Cheryl is keeping secrets of her own. What, exactly, is she hiding about the mysterious death of her twin brother, Jason? Riverdale may look like a quiet, sleepy town, but there are dangers in the shadows. Riverdale makes its Comic-Con debut with a screening of the complete pilot episode, followed by a Q&A with series stars and executive producers. Riverdale is from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios, with executive producers Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Blindspot), Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Supergirl, Glee), Sarah Schechter (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Blindspot) and Jon Goldwater (Archie Comics). 7:25-8:15 p.m. Frequency Pilot Screening and Q&A — Based on the New Line feature film, Frequency is the story of a father and daughter who are supernaturally reunited two decades after his suspicious and untimely death. New York detective Raimy Sullivan was only 7 when her father, Frank Sullivan, an undercover cop, abandoned his family in pursuit of a case that led not only to his family’s breakup, but also his eventual death undercover. Always believing her dad died in disgrace as a corrupt cop, Raimy set forth to surpass him in law enforcement, rising through the ranks to detective. But everything she knows changes when somehow Raimy and Frank connect — across two decades — over Frank’s vintage ham radio in the garage. Where once Frank was lost in the shadows of his undercover work in 1996, he has now miraculously been found by his now-grown daughter in 2016. As they forge a new relationship while working together in two time periods to close an unsolved serial murder investigation, their emotional connection transcends time to not only repair the broken bonds of their family, but also defy fate and change the course of destiny. Frequency makes its Comic-Con debut with a screening of the complete pilot episode, followed by a Q&A with series stars Peyton List (The Tomorrow People, The Flash), Riley Smith (Nashville, The Messengers) and Mekhi Phifer (Torchwood, ER), along with executive producers Jeremy Carver (Supernatural, U.S. version of Being Human) and Jennifer Gwartz (Lethal Weapon, Veronica Mars). 8:20-9:15 p.m. Time After Time Pilot Screening and Q&A — Using the 1979 novel and movie as a launching point, Time After Time chronicles the epic adventures of a young H.G. Wells. At the age of 28, the 19th century scholar has yet to publish any of his landmark science fiction novels, but his idealistic thinking and radical ideas have led him to actually create a time machine. When his longtime friend — the charismatic (and secretly psychopathic) Dr. John Stevenson, aka Jack the Ripper — finds himself cornered by the authorities at Wells’ London home, he escapes to present-day New York City using the time machine. Naturally, Wells follows, but instead of the Utopian society he imagined would be in the future, he finds a world more aligned to Stevenson’s temperament. Fortunately, Wells meets up with Jane Walker, an assistant curator at a museum staging an exhibition on H.G. Wells, the Father of Science Fiction. As Wells and Jane come together, they will not only play a dangerous endgame with Stevenson, but also find themselves involved with the incredible characters and scenarios that inspired Wells’ War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, The Island of Dr. Moreau and more. An epic love story charged with danger and adventure, Time After Time gives an unpredictable spin on the mythology of H.G. Wells by looking at the world of today through the eyes of yesterday. Time After Time makes its Comic-Con debut with a screening of the complete pilot episode, followed by a Q&A with executive producers Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries, Dawson’s Creek, The Following, Scream movies) and Marcos Siega (Blindspot, The Following, The Vampire Diaries, Dexter, Cold Case, Veronica Mars) and series stars Freddie Stroma (Harry Potter films, Pitch Perfect, Game of Thrones, 13 Hours, UnREAL) and Genesis Rodriguez (Identity Thief, Man on a Ledge, Entourage, Big Hero 6). Based on the novel written by Karl Alexander and produced by Outerbanks Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television, Time After Time premieres midseason on ABC. It’s been no secret that the CW’s casting for their DCTV shows have been phenomenal. The trend continues with the announcement that Lynda Carter, Wonder Woman herself, has been cast for a role in the upcoming season of Supergirl.

LyndaCarter

Supergirl, as you know, has moved to the CW and will premier its second season this October. In an effort to ramp up the buzz, Lynda Carter has been cast as the president of the United States. Not much is known beyond that. However, we can now assume that Supergirl will have some form of communication with the president, be it for better or worse. In any case, we’re pretty excited!

Supergirl returns Monday, October 10th!

Briefly: As disappointed as I am that iZombie won’t make its third season debut until the 2017 midseason, The CW has just revealed it’s Fall season premiere dates, and it looks like we’re set to have a phenomenal Fall in front of our television sets.

Of course, Supergirl has made the jump from CBS to The CW (and is now filming in my home city, which is pretty neat), and as such, a few other series have shifted around from their typical places.

Here’s what The CW has coming for us this Fall:

What CW series are you most looking forward to this year? Sound out below!

After the news hit that Supergirl was making a move to The CW it was only a matter of time before they would announce a four-way crossover with Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

I hope this equals to Greg Berlanti being more hands on with Supergirl and bringing the tone of the show closer to that of its sister shows. I know people have a kind of tough on Supergirl, but i feel like the show did lack that certain je ne sais quoi that we we got from the Arrowverse shows.

Cant wait for The CW’s super line up next fall!!

Rumors have been swirling for a while now, and today, it was made official. What’s worrying here for Supergirl fans is the show’s production budget. It’s reported that each episode took about three million dollars to produce. However, since the show is jumping to the CW, it’s likely the production will also move to Vancouver, where the rest the DC shows on the CW are filmed.

supergirl-the-flash-variety-photoshoot-gustin

With any luck, we won’t see any decrease in production value and Supergirl may end up a better series because of the jump. In any case, we can expect to see some major crossover action planned for season five of Arrow, season three of The Flash, and the season two of Legends of Tomorrow.

Briefly: Yes.

Sure, the show has had its ups and downs, and hasn’t been destroying ratings (though it has been doing pretty well), but according to CBS’ Les Moonves, we should be able to follow the adventures of Kara Zor-El for at least another year.

Deadline notes that Moonves stated at the Deutsche Bank Media Internet & Telecom Conference today that “We have about five new shows on this year,” he says. “Of those five, I believe all five of them will be renewed, and we own four of them.”

The five new series this year would have been Limitless, Code Black, Life in Pieces, Supergirl and Angel from Hell.

Are you excited? We’re excited. Melissa Benoist is the cutest.

Note: Check out last week’s recaps of The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow!

Wow. I’m pretty sure I’ve said it before, but I’ll have to revise any past statement made regarding the best episode of this series because tonight’s episode is definitely the best this show has ever seen. There is so much here to unpack, and we’ll get though all of it together. I promise. Hold me…

Warning: Spoilers Ahead!

We all knew Earth-2 would be arriving this week, but what we didn’t know is that we would have an introduction to the infinite earths. I joke about it a lot, and up until now, we’ve only had two earths confirmed. After tonight, it’s safe to say DC’s Infinite Earth’s has shown up in a big way. First, let’s take a look at what Garrick described as “Everything.”

Green Arrow

There’s a chance we’ll never see this version of the Green Arrow, but I doubt that. With the way DCTV is going, I’m sure we’ll see this Green Arrow someway or somehow. However, there are some important things to recognize here. First, that doesn’t look a whole like Oliver. I’ve previously written about Oliver’s son, Connor Hawke, taking up the mantle of the Green Arrow. Here, that looks to be the case.

The Flash 213

The metallic looking arm also looks a tad bit interesting. For all we know, this could be Oliver Queen, just at a future date.

Earth _ Flash

Back in the 90’s, DC had another Flash tv show that had good run. I’ve also previously written about this show before and it tying into The Flash we know today. Up until now, the only thing linking the two shows was the Trickster.

The Flash 213

What’s key here is the fact that in the 90’s television show, The Flash was played by the same actor playing Barry’s dad now in The Flash. Could we see his dad suit up one more time from another Earth to take on Zoom? We can dream.

The Flash 213

Supergirl

It was recently announced that The Flash and Supergirl would have a crossover next month, leaving many to speculate just how they would connect the two shows. Well, it looks like we have our answer.

The Flash 213

Supergirl is indeed taking place on another Earth, but is still connected to the Infinite Earths in the DC Universe. That just makes the crossover that much more exciting.

Grodd

The Flash 213

Grodd is currently being groomed to become an extremely formidable foe in the future. Here, it looks like Grodd has come into his own, and has embraced his position in Gorilla City.

Jonah Hex

The Flash 213

Legends of Tomorrow will be heading to the wild west at some point this season. Hex’s ‘Wanted’ poster hangs in Rip Hunter’s ship as well. Before we see any of that though, it appears we’ve been treated to a glimpse at what’s to come.

The Legion of Super Heroes

This was perhaps the biggest reveal this episode. Previous to this, there has been no mention of the Legion of Super Heroes. For those unfamiliar with them, the Legion of Super Heroes is comprised of young adults aiming to fight injustice and criminal activity on a galactic scale. Each member is given a ring that allows the wearer to fly, fly though an atmosphere, and fly in outer-space.

The Flash 213

Currently, the only non-member that uses the ring is, of course, Booster Gold. In the comics, Rip Hunter’s father is also Booster Gold. There has been no announcement of an appearance to be made by Gold, but may be one is incoming. After all, the Legends of Tomorrow can very well visit the 30th century, which is where the Legion of Super Heroes reside.

Infinite Earths

Lastly, I wanted to point out the bubbles seen while Barry, Cisco, and Harry are traveling to Earth 2. First off, those aren’t bubbles; They’re all individual Earths.

The Flash 213

You should also notice that each Earth is connected, meaning that everything and everyone in this universe is also connected.

Earth 2

When the gang shows up to Earth 2, they immediately notice the differences between the two Earths. Everything from people’s clothes, the cars they drive, the architecture, and even professions belonging to Earth 1 dopplegangers are wildly different. For example, Floyd Lawton, who previously died on Arrow as Deadshot, made an appearance in Earth 2 as Detective Iris West’s partner. We found this out while the criminal David Singh, who is the police captain in Earth 1, was being processed at CCPD. Another significant change was Joe West’s profession as a Jazz musician, something that suits him a little too well.

The Flash 213

However, if there’s one thing I’m really excited about, it’s Mayor Snart. I know I have no place to ask more of this show, but I would be eternally grateful if we could see Mayor Leonard Snart standing toe-to-toe with Zoom.

Barry and Iris eventually go to their Earth 2 home, where Barry gets a good look at where his doppleganger resides. In an emotional twist, Iris informs Barry that his mother called. Barry heads to the phone and we also get a look at some of most dialed numbers in the Allen residence.

The Flash 213

While those are indeed Leaguers, it’s impossible to say for certain that each of them live up to their alter-egos. And while we’re on that subject, did anyone notice that the Not-Justice-League mural was missing from the Earth 2 Central City Police Station?

The Flash 213

The Flash 213

Through Barry’s conversation with his mother, we also learned that civilian travel to Atlantis is indeed a thing. We’ve known about Atlantis for a while now because Jay Garrick already dropped that bomb a few episodes back, referencing that he has a bestie from Atlantis.

Deathstorm and Killer Frost

Ronnie Raymond returned, only not in a good way. Deathstorm, from Earth 2, aides Killer Frost in trying to find the “breacher” in Earth 2. After a couple of bouts with Barry, we quickly learn that Deathstorm is just as powerful as his Firestorm counterpart. What’s even more troubling is that we also learned the whereabouts of Martin Stein. According to Deathstorm, he hasn’t heard Stein’s voice in quite some time. This could mean that either Ronnie has learned to suppress Stein’s control entirely, or Stein died while trapped in Ronnie’s body. Either way, Earth 2 Ronnie wasn’t a nice guy.

The Flash 213

Killer Frost was the only villain not to be killed by Zoom in Earth 2. While she did play a good villain, Frost is extremely afraid of Zoom. She eventually escaped after Zoom left with Barry. Since Zoom was quick to kill Deathstorm, it’s entirely possible Iris and Harry convince Frost to tell them the whereabouts of Zoom and his prisoners.

Reverb and Vibe

Cisco met his doppleganger in Earth 2, and had some surprising results. Aside from Reverb being able to harness more power, Cisco was able to see what he could become.

The Flash 213

During the meeting, Reverb displayed some powers I’m sure Cisco wouldn’t mind using. Unfortunately, Reverb tried to take control from Zoom and paid the price in doing so.

Earth 2 Prison

The episode ends with Barry being trapped in Zoom’s prison. Barry wakes up to the sound of tapping on glass. This is coming from the adjacent cell next to Barry. It’s clear that whoever that is, their tapping is in morse code.

The Flash 213

If you’re wondering what this mysterious figure is saying, I’ll save you the trouble. The tapping translates to “Zoom is – ” The messenger is of course cut of by the arrival of Zoom. However, next week, this prisoner will will have a key role in revealing more about who or what Zoom is. It’s also entirely possible that this prisoner is a speedster himself. It would make sense that any other speedsters Zoom catches would be imprisoned here for a time while Zoom drains them of the speedforce. The mask is also very peculiar. We’re just going to have to wait and see, but if I had to guess, it’s someone we know under that mask.

Earth 1

Back on Earth 1, Adam Fells, a meta-human that has the ability to cause earthquakes, demands to fight The Flash. With Barry gone, Garrick must fill the void and become The Flash on Earth 1. The only problem is, Garrick doesn’t have his speed. Garrick finally levels with Caitlin and basically confesses that he became a velocity 6 addict on his Earth. Now, this is interesting because Garrick has maintained the story that Zoom stole his speed where in fact it was velocity 6 the whole time. On top of that, the effects of velocity 6 have been slowly killing Garrick as well. This change in story is a little suspicious, considering the possibility Garrick can be Zoom.

The Flash 213

Regardless, Garrick decides to hit the velocity serum again and fights Geomancer. The speedforce effects wear off, leaving Garrick vulnerable. Joe ends up saving him and Geomancer runs off to fight another day.

That’s all for this week! Did I miss something? Don’t be afraid to comment below! As always, thanks for reading!

‘The Flash’ set to take a trip to National City.

According to a press release, ‘The Flash’s Grant Gustin will be guest starring on ‘Supergirl’.

There are no other details as of yet, including whether Melissa Benoist (Supergirl) will be returning the favor and make an appearance on ‘The Flash’. If She were to make an appearance on The CW, one would hope for a trifecta event that would also include The Arrow.

2016-02-03 14_34_08-Instagram

The Team-up comes as no surprise since they all share the same executive producers, Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg. The crossover has been long rumored and on everybody’s wish list basically since the Supergirl’ series was announced. The only other cross network character crossover that I could think of was Detective Munch who has randomly popped up in TV popular detective shows. Kudos for Berlanti and Kreisberg for getting all the networks to play nice and make this momentous crossover happen.

The Fastest Man Alive will team up with the Girl of Steel on March 28, when the Flash is slated to make an appearance on CBS’ Supergirl’.

‘Supergirl’ airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS, ‘The Flash’ airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.

Youtube stars Tyler Oakley and Korey KĂŒhl arrive on Geekscape to talk about their new film ‘Snervous’! Tyler also talks about his new book ‘Binge’ and how its (almost) undefeated rise to the top of the New York Times Best Sellers list. While we’re at it, we talk about the loss of David Bowie and how Tyler really should watch ‘Labyrinth’. Plus, we try and decide which Star Wars droids are the gayest and Will discusses the ups and down’s of TV’s ‘Supergirl’! It’s all on this week’s Geekscape! Enjoy!

Briefly: I’m definitely down for this!

I’ve been having a blast with CBS Supergirl thus far (that huge crush on star Melissa Benoist certainly doesn’t hurt); the series brings a light hearted, funny, and heart-filled breath of fresh air to the crowded, dark and gloomy superhero genre, and I honestly believe that it’s one of the most refreshing new series’ that we’ve seen on television this year.

Apparently CBS agrees, because they’ve just added seven additional episodes to Supergirl‘s first season, bringing the total from 13 episodes, to 20.

Of course, the ratings aren’t shabby either, as Deadline notes that Supergirl has been ‘averaging 11.24 million viewers and a 12.8 rating among adults 18-49 in most recent ratings.’

Not too shabby at all. Miss the series so far? Here’s CBS’ official synopsis:

Supergirl is an action-adventure drama based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist), Superman’s (Kal-El) cousin who, after 12 years of keeping her powers a secret on Earth, decides to finally embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents’ help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin in order to keep her identity a secret. Years later at 24, Kara lives in National City assisting media mogul and fierce taskmaster Cat Grant (Golden Globe Award winner Calista Flockhart), who just hired the Daily Planet’s former photographer, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), as her new art director. However, Kara’s days of keeping her talents a secret are over when Hank Henshaw (David Harewood), head of a super-secret agency where her sister also works, enlists her to help them protect the citizens of National City from sinister threats. Though Kara will need to find a way to manage her new found empowerment with her very human relationships, her heart soars as she takes to the skies as Supergirl to fight crime.

In any case, I’ve loved almost everything that I’ve seen from the series so far, and I cannot wait to see where showrunner Greg Berlanti and the rest of the team takes it!

Take a look at the Supergirl trailer below, and let us know what you think of the series so far!

Rus Gutin is an actor, writer, stand up comedian and all around Man About Town… and now he’s a father twice over! I first met Rus years ago while doing stand up and he’s back to play a little game of catch up with all of us, while celebrating the release of his first stand up DVD ‘Legal Guardian’ (and maybe the birth of his daughter too). While he’s here, Will and I catch him up on all the incredible things that went on at Comikaze and I profess my love for ‘Ash VS Evil Dead’! ‘Supergirl’ looks like she’s going to fly high and all of us share our favorite videogames based on a TV or Movie property! Enjoy!

Excited about New York Comic-Con? So are we! And so is Warner Bros., apparently. With a full slate of fall shows, Warner Bros. and DC are coming to New York Comic-Con in a big way.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, and Gotham are joining Person of Interest, and Blindspot in a WB blitz at this New York Comic-Con. The usual fare is here, including Q&As, pilot screenings, and stars like Brandon Routh, Amy Acker, Arthur Davill, Ben McKenzie, Robin Lord Taylor, Caity Lotz, Jamie Alexander, and more.

But the curious thing are those who aren’t going to be there. Melissa Benoist, “Supergirl” herself isn’t a part of the announced guests, and neither will anyone from Arrow, The Flash, and iZombie. A little weird.

Warner Bros. takes the Comic-Con stage on Sunday, Oct. 11 from 1:30pm until 5:30pm on Empire Stage 1-E. You know. The big one.

And hey, if you’re coming to New York Comic-Con, let myself and Bigyanks know! We’ll be there too! Hit us up on Twitter (@ericthedragon) (@bigyanks). We’ll take selfies and crap.

Briefly: With just a couple of months to go until its premiere, CBS today debuted a brand new, action-packed trailer for its upcoming Supergirl series.

I have to say that I’m really excited to check out Supergirl. Sadly, I missed the pilot screening back at SDCC, and haven’t watched the leaked pilot just yet (we’ll see if I can hold out), but the premise of a fun, not super dark and gloomy superhero series is beyond intriguing to me.

From the looks of this latest trailer, the series looks light-hearted as hell, and we definitely need more of that on television today.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think! Supergirl premieres on October 26th!

A new trailer for Supergirl has just been released, and it’s making me feel a bit better about the upcoming series. That first trailer left a lot to be desired since it played out more of a rom-com than anything else. This time around we get a lot more super action and decent visual effects for a CBS show. There was also a quick tease regarding supervillians that ‘Supergirl” could be potentially facing off against.

My gripe with Supergirl at this point is that it’s on CBS, which I feel may water down the show and might make it cheesy-looking. Hopefully Supergirl can get the same type of treatment that The Flash and Arrow are getting over at The CW and keep it closely connected to its comic counterpart.

Supergirl premieres on October 26.

Briefly: Episode two of Supergirl‘s first season is now in production, and following the series’ first poster from just a few days back, CBS has debuted a new featurette that digs into the episode’s opening scene.

CBS just released their first official poster for the upcoming Supergirl series. Melissa Benoist sure looks…super!

Supergirl premieres October 26th

Right away, I ask that you forgive me for describing Supergirl, the first major superhero TV starring a woman show since — well, a long time, as a “romantic comedy.” It may come off as sexist and I apologize for it, but believe me when I say that as a legitimate compliment in regards to its cinematic styling as well as its premise. A 20-something quirky girl working for a ruthless woman in a trendy city office? That’s straight-up The Devil Wears Prada.

But where My Superhero Ex-Girlfriend failed, Supergirl does right and I’m SO EXCITED.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=23&v=Lm46-envrHo

It’s reminding me of The Flash by just how much fun the show seems to be. It’s like someone went to the set of Arrow and slapped a few smiley face bumper stickers.

Forgetting the troubling closet lesbian line, Supergirl looks like a genuinely cheerful series that the modern, Hollywood Superman seems to be ashamed of being. I’m also torn if I want this series to cross over with the Arrow universe. Supergirl deserves to stand on her own in her own right, but how fucking awesome would it be to see Oliver Queen and Barry looking up at a soaring Kara? And John Constantine in the corner smoking? Can this please happen?

Allow me to still be amazed at the wonders we’re reaping from the mainstreaming of geek culture. We’re getting a fucking incedible-looking Supergirl series aimed for everybody, but with a clear intention at attracting women — all women, both geeks and non-geeks in mind. My sister is absolutely disinterested in superheroes, and Supergirl looks like something we’re going to be watching over the phone together like we do with Scandal.

The geeks have inherited the Earth. We’ve won.

Until five minutes ago I completely forgot CBS is creating a Supergirl TV series. I hear news about it every so often and I’m like, “Oh, okay. That’s a thing.” Now it is more than ever a thing, with an actual, honest-to-goodness look at star Melissa Benoist as the Girl of Steel. (Putting my nerd cred on the line here, has that ever been used for Supergirl?)

It’s a better look than your average Halloween costume, but it’s so Man of Steel-y too that it’s kind of funny. She kind of looks like a sorority girl that is actually super nerdy and spent good money on premium cosplay. I’m not knocking sorority girls by the way, I was one of those nerds who was somehow in a fraternity.

Still, this is real! Holy crap. We’re actually getting Supergirl. I think I’m actually excited now.

Let us know if you’re suddenly looking forward to this series too. A higher resolution image is below, if you wanted a new iPhone wallpaper.

Briefly: The cast of CBS’ Supergirl has grown yet again.

Following the reveal of Dean Cain and Helen Slater’s casting earlier this week, TheWrap reports that The Last Five Years star Jeremy Jordan has joined the project as “Winslow “Winn” Schott, a tech genius and superstar IT whiz who works alongside Kara (“Glee’s” Melissa Benoist) at Cat Grant’s (Calista Flockhart) company, CatCo.”

He’s set for a guest role in the series’ pilot, though there is potential for his character to recur. In the DC Comics, of course, Winslow Schott is also a villain known as Toyman.

The series itself will focus on Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, who also escaped Krypton before it exploded. Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.

As earlier reported, Glee‘s Melissa Benoist will star in the series, and Calista Flockhart will play Cat.

Are you happy with Supergirl‘s casting so far? Are you looking forward to the series, or is the small screen getting as superhero-cluttered as the silver screen is? Sound out below!

Briefly: The project won a huge series commitment all the way back in September, and just a few weeks back we learned who would play the series’ titular character. Today, the cast of CBS’ Supergirl added a second member.

It’s Ally McBeal herself, Calista Flockhart. She’ll play Cat Grant, “the self-made media magnate and founder of CatCo. Cat started her career as a reporter and has built her company into a global powerhouse.”

The series comes from Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler, who previously teamed up for ABC’s short-lived (and fantastic) No Ordinary Family.

Are you down for the casting? Is there anyone else you’d rather have seen in the role? How about Melissa Benoist? Sound out below!

Briefly: The project won a huge series commitment all the way back in September, and now we finally know who will play CBS and Warner Bros Television’s Supergirl.

It’s Glee and Whiplash actress Melissa Benoist. She landed her breakout role in Glee‘s ‘second class’ as Marley Rose, and was later cast in roles in Homeland and Oscar-nominee Whiplash, among others.

As an enormous comics fan of both the Marvel and DC Universes, ever since I was a child I always gravitated to the DC universe more. Even during the periods where Marvel’s output was clearly superior, I was still a DC boy at heart. And it all probably has to do with my love of female super heroes. DC has, without a doubt, the most iconic female heroes in comics. Wonder Woman is the first and longest running of course, and along with her, characters like Supergirl, Batgirl and Catwoman are all household names. Even your grandma could pick them out of a line up. Supergirl and Catwoman have carried their own series for nearly twenty years, and Batgirl, either in the wheelchair or out if it, has been a monthly feature at DC for the better part of fifteen years straight.

At least four of the female characters are household names even to non comic book fans.

Not to say that Marvel’s heroines are anything to scoff at; In fact Marvel, without question, has some of the best female heroes in comics. The X-Men titles alone have given us possibly the most well rounded and iconic heroines in comic book history with  Storm, Kitty Pryde, Rogue, Phoenix, Psylocke, Emma Frost and several more. And yet Marvel has yet to yield one single female hero to headline her own comic for any considerable length of time, while DC continues to have success with female led books. Why is there a difference? Is editorial at Marvel more sexist, or do Marvel fanboys just not want to read stories from a female perspective?

Without a doubt, the women of the X-Men titles are the most well rounded and interesting in all of mainstream comics.

Marvel Women: The Early Years

When Stan Lee began the Marvel universe in 1961, the only prominent female hero regularly published was DC’s Wonder Woman. Supergirl had just been created, and Batwoman was less a hero and more just a character who would pop up occasionally in Batman’s comics and try to get him to marry her. Stan Lee was the first to change all this. While not showcasing a major female super hero character in a book of her own yet, all three of the major team books of the early Marvel Universe (The Fantastic Four, The X-Men and The Avengers) had at least one prominent female character. And not just as a love interest like Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane were for Spider-Man, but as a fully fledged super heroine in their own right. In fact, the Invisible Girl, Marvel Girl and Scarlet Witch were in fact the most powerful members of their respective teams.  So right there, that’s what Stan Lee did right.

The original female Marvel mainstays mostly did a lot of frowning and fussing, despite being way more powerful than the boys, at least in theory.

But here’s Stan Lee did wrong; the women heroes, despite their power pedigree, spent much of the Silver Age fretting over the male heroes on the team. Sue Storm was usually being kidnapped by Doctor Doom or being chewed out by her boyfriend (and later hubbie) Reed Richards, or worst of all, trying to impress him with a sexy new outfit. Scarlet Witch was pretty much a harpy or a victim, complaining about how much she hated working for Magneto, or fending off the lascivious Mastermind’s marriage proposals. And Marvel Girl, despite being telekinetic and telepathic, was mostly just portrayed as the girl next door who all the boys had a crush on. She almost never was the team’s MVP, despite the fact that her power was the easily the greatest.

It is hard to fault Stan Lee here though; he wasn’t a young man when he created the Marvel Universe, and was merely a product of his sexist times. The fact that he made as many new women superheroes as he did is to totally be commended. He created the blueprint others would later improve on in a post sexual revolution world. But maybe that sexist outlook, where women characters were just there to support the men folk, seeped into the editorial culture at Marvel and has maybe never left. Although for a few years in the late 70’s, they really did try to make up for it.

The 1970’s: Women’s Lib Catches Up With Marvel

It wasn’t until the next decade, when creators other than Lee took over the writing on most Marvel titles, that the women started to emerge as strong as their power sets would imply. Under the guiding hand of people like Chris Claremont and John Byrne,  Marvel Girl became the Goddess like Phoenix. Susan Richards dropped the “girl” from her name and became the Invisible Woman, and eventually even became the team leader. Scarlet Witch’s powers were revealed to be more than just random hexes, but the ability to alter reality itself. The Wasp
well, the Wasp got lots of new costumes and got slapped around by her husband Hank Pym.  But she did get to become leader of the Avengers for awhile, so I guess that counts for something. Uhh..right?

The slap heard round the world, as Hank Pym smacks his wife Janet, AKA The Wasp. One single comic book panel neither character would ever really recover from.

But Marvel still lacked a solid marquee female character that could carry her own ongoing title. As  the 70’s continued to roll on, and  the phrase “women’s liberation” was on everyone’s lips, just where were the Marvel solo books for women heroes? DC had Wonder Woman on television, both in live action and animated form,  not to mention non comic related female heroes like The Bionic Woman and Charlie’s Angels kicking ass on the small screen. No doubt feeling the pressure, Marvel fired back with several books to counter Wonder Woman in the late 70’s, starting with an unexpected female take on their most famous hero and corporate mascot, Spider-Man.

Taking a page out of DC's playbook, Marvel unleashed three solo series for women characters, all female analogs for popular male heroes.

In 1977, Spider-Woman was unleashed onto comic book fans everywhere. She very quickly got her own ongoing comic book, and by 1979 even had her very own cartoon series on Saturday mornings. She instantly became a staple of Marvel marketing; I was a young child during this era and remember Spider-Woman being marketed on lunchboxes and toys along with Spider-Man and Captain America as if she were “one of the guys,” and always had been.  I even remember one of those “take a pic with Spidey” events at a local mall when I was four years old, where I took an awkward Sears portrait style photo along with some poor schmo dressed up as Spider-Man…and  there was a Spider-Woman there too.  What made Spider-Woman so cool was that unlike her DC counterparts Batgirl and Supergirl, she wasn’t a Xerox copy of her more famous male namesake. Her powers, her costume, her origins were all different. Aside from living in the same universe, she had no real ties to Peter Parker at all.

During the late 70's and early 80's, Marvel marketed Spider-Woman as if she were equal to her fellow male icons. And then just like that, Marvel all but erased her out of existence.

And then, almost overnight, she was gone. In 1983 her comic book series was cancelled, and worse, she lost her powers and became just Jessica Drew, Private Investigator. X-Men writer Chris Claremont liked her well enough, so she’d show up occasionally in a panel with Wolverine or something, but that was it. No one really knows why, but rumors are that then Marvel Editor in Chief at the time Jim Shooter just plain hated Spider-Woman, as he thought a female version of a male hero emasculated him. (I guess that makes Batman and Superman giant sissies then? And what about the Hulk??) There have been rumors of sexism swirling around the Shooter years at Marvel for decades now, and their treatment of Spider-Woman merely adds fuel to that fire.

A new Spider-Woman was eventually created, but she wore a costume identical to Spider-Man’s black costume and was kept around mostly as just side character in West Coast Avengers, probably just as a way for Marvel to keep the copyright. (a blink-and-you’ll-miss-her third Spider-Woman was also created in the 90’s.)  It was over twenty years later when writer Brian Michael Bendis revived the classic Spider-Woman for New Avengers and did his best to make her a Marvel mainstay again. And so far, it has worked. But despite being announced years ago now, there is still no ongoing Spider-Woman series from Marvel on the horizon.

Julia Carpenter, the replacement Spider-Woman

Another major female character to get her own title during the period was Ms. Marvel. Originally, Carol Danvers was just a female knock off of the alien warrior Captain Marvel, even wearing a sexier version of his costume (eventually as her series progressed, she got her own costume, one which she still wears to this day)  Although her own series was cancelled in 1979, she went on to join the Avengers, where she was a mainstay for quite some time.

Avengers #200 was a very controversial turning point for the character, which essentially had her brainwashed by a villain who was obsessed with her and had her impregnated, only to have her take off with him at the end, with all the other members of the team giving their blessing. This storyline has long been referred to as “The Rape of Ms. Marvel.” This story, along with the editorially mandated death of Jean Grey, gave Marvel of the early 80’s their first accusations of misogynist undertones.  Writer Chris Claremont did his best to undo the damage done to her in his X-Men title,  and made Carol Danvers a cosmically powerful character named Binary. (essentially, he pulled a Phoenix on her)  Today, Ms. Marvel is arguably more important to the Marvel Universe and more high profile than her male counterpart, so that’s gotta count for something. But despite her high profile, her own attempts at carrying a series keep getting ignored by fanboys.

The last major new female character of the era was the She-Hulk. She Hulk has the distinction of being the last major character to be created by Stan Lee for the company, and  the reasons for creating her were similar to the reasons for creating Spider-Woman; copyright. In 1979 The Incredible Hulk was a very popular tv show, and the guys at Marvel feared that the producers would create a female Hulk much like The Six Million Dollar Man gave way to The Bionic Woman. If that was the case, they wanted to make sure THEY created her first, and therefore owned the copyright free and clear.  And so at the end of 1979, She Hulk was bornLike Spider-Woman, She-Hulk’s series only lasted until 1982. But unlike Spider-Woman, after her series ended she continued to be used in comics like The Avengers, and even joined the Fantastic Four title for a while. All this added exposure in popular team titles increased her popularity with the Marvel fanbase, and when she was given a title again in 1989. (with then popular writer/artist John Byrne at the helm) The series was far more popular this time, and lasted five years. Marvel did right this time, but then after the cancellation made no attempts at giving her another ongoing for nearly a decade.

The Present (And Future) of Marvel’s Heroic Women

For the past twenty years or so though, Marvel’s commitment to ongoing series with female protagonists has been spotty at best.  Oh, there have been numerous attempts to do so
characters like Elektra and Mystique have all been given ongoing series, sometimes with big name quality creators, only to flame out quickly after a couple of years. Even highly regarded series like Brian Bendis’ Alias never got incredible sales to go with their rave reviews. Similarly, Spider-Girl, an alternate universe version of Peter Parker and Mary Jane’s teenage daughter, has much critical acclaim but never could generate significant sales, and was ultimately cancelled. In a way, Marvel has had to resort to trickery to get fanboys to buy a series with a female protagonist; X-Men Legacy has essentially been a Rogue series now for years, and It probably would sell half as well were it simply just called “Rogue”.

A disturbing trend from Marvel has been taking their powered-up female heroes and having them become unhinged, as if too much power+ estrogen =disaster. While the Dark Phoenix Saga had a natural build up, by the time Marvel had "Dark Scarlet Witch" the undertones became creepy. I don't remember stuff like this happening to The Silver Surfer or Thor.

In fairness,  the past five or so years have seen Marvel give ongoing solo series to Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk again, but very rarely with their top tier creators, or given much fanfare in an effort to create buzz.  The teen girl version of Wolverine called X-23 was the most recent ongoing super heroine book to get the ax, leaving Marvel with no female lead books yet again. Marvel is pretty much in the exact same spot they were forty years ago, before their late 70’s “Girl Power” moment.

So is Marvel to blame? If you build it, and no one comes, can Marvel really even be at fault? Or have all their recent attempts been anemic and deserving of failure? Or is the ugly truth that most Marvel Fanboys are really just that sexist? The massive popularity of the X-Men titles, with their huge amount of strong female characters suggest otherwise. And the success of Wonder Woman, Batwoman, Batgirl and Catwoman as part of the “New 52” relaunch at DC shows that fanboys WILL buy female heroes if done right. Sooner or later, Marvel will hopefully launch a female centric property and it will stick, but only if they keep trying and don’t give up entirely, as they seem to have done lately.
