Briefly: We had our first taste of fantastic, visceral footage from the upcoming Wonder Woman solo flick back at San Diego Comic-Con in July, and since then we’ve been desperate for more.

The Wonder Woman footage was probably the best reveal of SDCC, and I’m so excited that the film’s just-released official trailer is just as impressive.

The incredible action of the first footage takes a back seat this time around as we head to Themyscira to learn just why Diana decided to leave, plus… well, just take a look at the trailer below.

Wonder Woman hits theatres on June 2nd, 2017, and we couldn’t be more excited. What do you think?

While it was overshadowed Friday night by other big events like the Sonic 25th Anniversary party, The Nick hosted Women in Animation Panel at Comic Con was easily one of the biggest highlights of the connvention.

Hosted by Nick and Moderated by Variety’s Laura Prudom, this panel featured an amazing panel of women including Lauren Faust (MLP:FIM, Super Best Friends Forever) Mary Harrington (Ren & Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life), Vanessa Coffey (Rugrats, Doug), Rikke Asbjoern (Pinky Malinky), Margaret Dean (Women in Animation), and Maija Burnett (CalArts). During the panel, these women brought some great insight into the world of animation and their struggles, and I’m here to give you an abridged version of it.

WIA Panelists

The panel started with a quick introduction of all the panelists and then proceeded to talk about how different the animation field was when they entered the business. They talked about how most shows were being made to just sell products or were aimed towards only a specific gender or demographic. They talked about the struggle to get original cartoons made and how Nick helped usher in the creator driven era in animation where shows were no longer about selling a product or catering to a specific age or gender, but instead telling fun stories that both kid and adults can appreciate.

WIA Panel 2

Next, they moved on to talk a bit about Lauren Faust and her experiences with the industry. She talked about how her first job outside of school was getting the amazing opportunity to animate for films like Cats Don’t Dance and The Iron Giant. She also touched on other subjects like when she tried pitching her possible toy line Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls, but was instead rejected by Hasbro in favor of the offer to help them reboot and breathe new life into the My Little Pony franchise. In the end she ended up accepting the job, and the rest is just about history as the MLP brand is one of the companies biggest staples now because of Faust and her crew.

WIA Panel 3

After that, they went to talk about upcoming and aspiring animators that they try to help every day. They mentioned how great it is that a lot of women are finally getting their chance to have their own shows made and how positive the reception to them has been. Steven Universe and Star Vs. the Forces of Evil were some examples of how positive reception to female creator driven shows have been. They then showed off a short animation by that Rikke Asbjoern helped with called My Friend Pancake. The short centered around a young girl who was friends with a giant cat that seems to be a bit timid. It was a funny and cute short that showed off the talents of upcoming female animators.

Finally, Rikke talked a bit about one of Nick’s upcoming new shows, Pinky Malinky. She talked about how she’s had the idea for this show forever and that as she continued to grow and learn about animation, so did Pinky. She seemed very excited to finally be able to talk and show people the show. They then showed us a couple of small clips of the show as well as some stills. After that, they ended the panel by telling people to help them with a cause called Women in Animation 50/50 which is an initiative to get women animation creatives up from 20% to 50% by the year 2025. If you’d like to help with this cause, check it out right here!

WIA Panel 5

WIA Panel 6

In the end, I can’t say enough good things about this panel. It’s a real shame if you weren’t able to attend the panel if you were at the convention, but hopefully my abridged recap of it helped convince you. Did you enjoy the write-up? Tell me in the comments below!

WIA Panel 1

This year during Comic Con, I had the honor of getting to sit down with composer Bear McCreary. Bear has composed for many different genres and shows from The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica, Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, and even the upcoming God of War for PS4. In the interview, we talk a bit about getting to compose the new God of War, how he got the gig composing the Angry Video Game Nerd Movie, and more! Check out the interview below!

Season 1 of The Magicians ended with a jaw dropping cliff hanger, but fans were able to learn more about the highly anticipated season 2 at Comic-Con and catch a glimpse of what is to come. You can watch all of season 1 on Syfy.com

Sera Gamble, one of the writers, said of the main characters, “…they will all be back in one form or another.” If you have seen the season 1 finale, you know this statement can fill you with hope and dread at the same time.

Lev Grossman (the author of The Magicians books) moderated the panel and asked Gamble how the show got started. Gamble replied that it was actually Amazon that recommended his books to her. John McNamara, another writer for the show, commented, “I read it and it blew my mind.” He went on to say, “The scariest things in there are not the monsters but what people do to each other.” McNamara and Gamble then optioned the book with their own money to get the show started.

Grossman posed an interesting question to the actors on the panel, “Which of you auditioned for a different part?” Olivia Dudley, who plays Alice, said she auditioned for the role of Julia while Jade Tailor, who plays Julia, auditioned for Margo. Hale Appleman said he auditioned for Penny and said, “I would not have made a good Penny.” It is amusing to think of what the show would have been like if the actors ended up playing the roles they originally auditioned for.

Stella Maeve answered the question of what is the “hardest thing to do for your character” by saying, “For Julia, everything. These characters are flawed…hart to get into it.” She went on to say how it was difficult because many times she would not agree with her character and what she does. Summer Bishil felt it was, “grounding the hilarity between Margo and Elliot.” She added the writing helped and she focused on staying true to the script. Arjun Gupta, Penny, revealed, “taking Penny to a place where he was at a point of almost suicide.” Rick Worthy, Dean Fogg, humorously added, “In the pilot, initially I thought I died….Long story short…they found a brilliant way to keep me around.” Dudley talked about the physicality of Alice and how that affects her character. This was the “first time I got to play a character where everything is on the inside.” Before every take, she tenses up to remind herself that Alice holds it all in. Speaking of Alice, if you were wondering how drinking that “god spunk” was, she was able to make it herself and it was lychee. Jason Ralph, Quentin, rounded off the group saying it is challenging for him that his character thinks so fast.

Remember that Talor Swift song? Who could forget that magical dance number? Guess how much they paid for the rights to the song….$50,000! McNamara said that “the guy who wrote the check said, ‘Can we agree that we will never do this again?'” Ralph loved it though because “I got to be a pop star for the day”.

Maeve thinks that the fun thing about the books and the show is that they are “not afraid to make fun of themselves.”

Dudley went on to say, “We get to go to these worlds and comment on them, like a human”. That grounds the show because weird things happen and the characters actually acknowledge the strangeness. It is like they say what you the viewer are thinking.

Grossman asked, “What prop or wardrobe item from the show would you steal?” Worthy wants the dean’s office because there is “a lot of cool stuff in there.” He also likes the dean’s wardrobe and he loves the dean’s glasses! Bishil, just like Summer would say, “I would steal my stripper heels.” Appleman would “probably steal all of Eliot’s clothes and the Physical Kids’ house.” Dudley and Ralphy actually took home items! Dudley confessed she took home Alice’s glasses but “I brought them back.” Ralph took a jacket because it fit so well.

magcians2

It is easy to wonder how similar actors are to their characters. Sometimes the line between actor and character blur. Gupta admitted, “So many times I have called people by their character names.” In thinking about how he is like Penny, Gupta said, “I would like to think I am a lot nicer than Penny but I don’t know if people think that.” Grossman the authority on the subject, said, “Olivia, you are the most like Alice”.

When asked what magical ability he would choose Ralph replied, “If you go by the rules of this world, you don’t just have one power. You’re a magician…you can just study a lot.” Grossman quickly replied that maybe Ralph is most like his character. Bishil shocked the panel by saying she would like to “turn poop into gold. It’s a daily thing…a lot of gold.” Ah Margo. The crowd loved her power choice.

There was a question from the audience about the spell casting and if it is choreographed. The action is described in the book, and serendipitously the finger tutting phenomenon happened right when they started making the show. It is rather cool to watch the character cast spells. Yes, they do have a choreographer.

Ralph was asked to pick between Olivia and Julia but he would not, though he had a nice response saying, “They both had specific times in his life.”

Gupta and Tailor are happy they are more in the show than in the books when asked what they like with the adaptation of the books.

For those wondering about the time loops, Gamble said, “I wouldn’t count out going back and looking at other time loops.”

Yes, we will find out why Elliot has two books. Not really a spoiler but makes a whole lot more sense after you have seen the show.

Ralph and Gupta were asked about their character’s relationship and Ralph feels they are “similar souls on a different path.” They are foil characters but they both want the same thing, magic.

If you wonder about how the show follows the books, Gamble explained, “We see the big plot points as spots on a map, and maybe we get there a different way than Lev and the book.”

If you aren’t already excited for season 2, they will have a centaur!

Here is a fun behind the scenes look at what is coming in season 2!

Also, here is the exclusive first scene of next season that they premiered at Comic-Con!

With the recent launch of DC’s Rebirth, I was able to catch up with Joshua Williamson, lead writer on The Flash: Rebirth series at Comic-Con. We sat down and had a chat about The Flash!

TheFlashRebirth

Jake: Rebirth just launched. What’s your pitch to those out there who don’t buy comics, who haven’t bought comics on a regular basis, and are new to this whole “Rebirth” launch. What would you say to entice them to buy into The Flash?

Williamson: If you like super hero books and want a character who actually enjoys being a super hero, rather than some of the other books that have become dark and gritty, and you want a fun book, you should read The Flash. It’s about a man who got hit by lightning and now can run really quick and really fast, and he’s someone who enjoys helping people.

Jake: The Flash Family is all here now, in Rebirth, –

Williamson: Are they all here?!

Jake: Well, with the two Wally’s, Barry, and now August, how is it juggling all of these speedsters at once?

Williamson: It’s been hard. Especially after issue three, there’s a lot of them. They don’t all have names. It’s like, “I know this one’s name, this one’s name, this one’s name, and this one’s name. The rest of you all are all faceless.” Like, they’re just in the crowd of Speedsters. It’s funny, in editorial, we know the names of some of them because we kinda had to. One’s named Roger. I don’t know if he’s ever actually mentioned, no one ever goes, “Oh, hey look, it’s Roger.” We try to focus on a smaller group. There’s a couple that get introduced in the next issue that you’ll see. August is a big one that was introduced in Issue 1. But I’m always trying show Barry’s perspective. The book is about Barry Allen and I want to keep that going.

Jake: How difficult was it introducing a new villain who hasn’t been touched on too much in Godspeed? How was that experience introducing a new super-villain in the DC Universe.

Williamson: It was a lot of fun. For me, I’ve had a really good time working with him, doing a sort of darker version of this character. I’m curious of what people are going to think about him. You know? He’s not Professor Zoom, he’s not like a Joker-type bad guy. He’s very calculated, and it’s a very emotional story for him and his relationship in the book, you’ll see. I think there will be people, when he is really introduced, I think they’re going to be readers who are like, “Is he the bad guy? Maybe he’s right!” You’re going to get some instances like that. For me, it’s just been fun. I like bad guys, I like writing bad guys. I hope people dig it. It’s been a lot of fun.

GodSpeed

Jake: I understand his colors are white and gold, which is an unconventional color palate to use for a super-villain.

Williamson: Yeah! We’ll see what people think!

Jake: Are you drawing any inspiration from past storylines or threads going back throughout the history of The Flash?

Williamson: Oh yeah. I’m looking at everything.

Jake: How long have you been reading?

Williamson: Since I was a little kid! I love Impulse, I was a big time Wally fan, so I pull from that. I pull from a lot of the Mark Waid stuff. I read some of the old Silver Age stuff and I come up with things. Like what I think our second arc is going to be, after issue nine or issue ten, is pulled from a lot of Silver Age stuff. I’m pulling from a lot of places.

Jake: That sounds great. You’ve been doing a great job!

Williamson: Thanks, that means a lot. I am a Flash fan, so for me, I wanted to make sure it was a book that I would want to read. That would suck if you were writing a comic and were like, “I wouldn’t read this.”

The Flash Rebirth is currently on store shelves right now, with a new issue releasing twice monthly! Check it out!

Earlier today we told you about Rare’s Sea of Thieves panel at Comic-Con and how they are just as pumped about releasing the game as much as people are excited to play it. After the panel, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Executive Producer Joe Neate to talk about the game, community, and much more. Give it a listen!

Briefly: Following the incredibly gorgeous first poster revealed last night, Warner Bros. has just debuted the first trailer for next year’s Wonder Woman solo film.

This marks a great first look at the anticipated film, and we’re extremely glad that Gadot’s Batman v. Superman performance silenced the internet haters, as she looks even more at home in her own solo film.

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Take a look at the trailer below, and be sire to let us know what you think! Wonder Woman hits theatres on June 2nd, 2017.

Briefly: Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot, has just revealed the very first poster for next year’s Wonder Woman solo film… and it’s probably the best poster that we’ve seen in recent memory.

It’s an extremely simple image that simply shows Diana, standing sternly with her sword, but it’s the silhouette, contact, and colouring of the poster that makes it truly outstanding. This looks more like art than a piece of marketing material, and I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that I would love to get my hands on one.

Some of the most fantastic panels have taken place inside of Hall H on Saturday night’s these past few years. However, we’re in for a change as it seems DCTV is doing away with our Hall H after dark parties. Instead, Warner Bros. Television has opted for owning Ballroom 20 for what seems to be the majority of Saturday. While this sounds great too, it’s also worth mentioning that Ballroom 20 does not sit nearly as many people has Hall H does. This may spell trouble for anyone looking to attend any one of DCTV’s panels, including Gotham and in addition to iZombie.

What’s also troubling here is that DCTV panels seem to be going on during the daytime on Saturday. This means DC fans may have to choose between a potential Justice League panel and their favorite DCTV show.

That being said, WBTV seems to have spreads its wings this year, even hosting a panels on Sunday! Check these listings and let us know where you’re heading this SDCC!

6:30 p.m.-7:20 p.m. Riverdale Pilot Screening and Q&A — Things aren’t always what you expect in Riverdale. Based on the iconic characters from Archie Comics and produced by Berlanti Productions (The Flash, Supergirl, Blindspot, Everwood), this one-hour drama is a bold, subversive take on the surreality of small-town life. As a new school year begins, the town of Riverdale is reeling from the recent, tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom — and nothing feels the same. Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) is still the all-American teen, but the summer’s events made him realize that he wants to pursue a career in music — and not follow in his dad’s footsteps — despite the sudden end of his forbidden relationship with Riverdale’s young music teacher, Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel). Which means Archie doesn’t have anyone who will mentor him — certainly not singer Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), who is only focused on her band, the soon-to-be-world-famous Pussycats. It’s all weighing heavily on Archie’s mind — as is his fractured friendship with budding writer and fellow classmate Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse). Meanwhile, girl-next-door Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) is anxious to see her crush Archie after being away all summer, but she’s not quite ready to reveal her true feelings to him. And Betty’s nerves — which are hardly soothed by her overbearing mother, Alice (Mädchen Amick) — aren’t the only thing holding her back. When a new student, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), arrives in town from New York with her mother Hermione (Marisol Nichols), there’s an undeniable spark between she and Archie, even though Veronica doesn’t want to risk her new friendship with Betty by making a play for Archie. And then there’s Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch)… Riverdale’s Queen Bee is happy to stir up trouble amongst Archie, Betty, and Veronica, but Cheryl is keeping secrets of her own. What, exactly, is she hiding about the mysterious death of her twin brother, Jason? Riverdale may look like a quiet, sleepy town, but there are dangers in the shadows. Riverdale makes its Comic-Con debut with a screening of the complete pilot episode, followed by a Q&A with series stars and executive producers. Riverdale is from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios, with executive producers Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Blindspot), Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Supergirl, Glee), Sarah Schechter (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Blindspot) and Jon Goldwater (Archie Comics). 7:25-8:15 p.m. Frequency Pilot Screening and Q&A — Based on the New Line feature film, Frequency is the story of a father and daughter who are supernaturally reunited two decades after his suspicious and untimely death. New York detective Raimy Sullivan was only 7 when her father, Frank Sullivan, an undercover cop, abandoned his family in pursuit of a case that led not only to his family’s breakup, but also his eventual death undercover. Always believing her dad died in disgrace as a corrupt cop, Raimy set forth to surpass him in law enforcement, rising through the ranks to detective. But everything she knows changes when somehow Raimy and Frank connect — across two decades — over Frank’s vintage ham radio in the garage. Where once Frank was lost in the shadows of his undercover work in 1996, he has now miraculously been found by his now-grown daughter in 2016. As they forge a new relationship while working together in two time periods to close an unsolved serial murder investigation, their emotional connection transcends time to not only repair the broken bonds of their family, but also defy fate and change the course of destiny. 8:20-9:15 p.m. Time After Time Pilot Screening and Q&A — Using the 1979 novel and movie as a launching point, Time After Time chronicles the epic adventures of a young H.G. Wells. At the age of 28, the 19th century scholar has yet to publish any of his landmark science fiction novels, but his idealistic thinking and radical ideas have led him to actually create a time machine. When his longtime friend — the charismatic (and secretly psychopathic) Dr. John Stevenson, aka Jack the Ripper — finds himself cornered by the authorities at Wells’ London home, he escapes to present-day New York City using the time machine. Naturally, Wells follows, but instead of the Utopian society he imagined would be in the future, he finds a world more aligned to Stevenson’s temperament. Fortunately, Wells meets up with Jane Walker, an assistant curator at a museum staging an exhibition on H.G. Wells, the Father of Science Fiction. As Wells and Jane come together, they will not only play a dangerous endgame with Stevenson, but also find themselves involved with the incredible characters and scenarios that inspired Wells’ War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, The Island of Dr. Moreau and more. An epic love story charged with danger and adventure, Time After Time gives an unpredictable spin on the mythology of H.G. Wells by looking at the world of today through the eyes of yesterday. Time After Time makes its Comic-Con debut with a screening of the complete pilot episode, followed by a Q&A with executive producers Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries, Dawson’s Creek, The Following, Scream movies) and Marcos Siega (Blindspot, The Following, The Vampire Diaries, Dexter, Cold Case, Veronica Mars) and series stars Freddie Stroma (Harry Potter films, Pitch Perfect, Game of Thrones, 13 Hours, UnREAL) and Genesis Rodriguez (Identity Thief, Man on a Ledge, Entourage, Big Hero 6). Based on the novel written by Karl Alexander and produced by Outerbanks Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television, Time After Time premieres midseason on ABC.
