With the exception of perhaps “Into The Spider-verse” for my money, Marvel’s animated outings have been somewhat lacking. DC always seems to be the frontrunner when it comes to that venue. The release of “Death of Superman” and “Reign of the Supermen” continues that trend but, for some reason, something doesn’t feel quite right.

Most people know the story of the Death of Superman and the aftermath thereof. The first film did a good job of encapsulating that first part of the story while making a few changes that don’t throw things off too much.

“Reign of the Supermen” however seems to kind of go off the rails and incorporates an almost new story when it comes to the 4 individuals parading around calling themselves Superman.

The principles are all there. Superboy, Cyborg Superman, Eradicator, and Steel. Each with their own reasons for donning the giant S on their chest, but that’s kind of where things got a little weird. DC seems to have a difficulty adapting things from the comics. They did a decent job with things like “Under the Red Hood” and the like, but for main stories where a major part of the Justice League is involved, they tend to keep it tied down to a certain universe that they are building instead of letting be its own story. Sometimes including variables that weren’t in the original story can make it better, but in this case it just kind of makes you scratch your head and say “Huh?”

Now I’m not saying it’s a bad story. It’s not. There is quality writing, animation and voice acting. There are just little things, aside from the aforementioned variables, that seem to stand out like a sore thumb, especially to avid readers of the DC Universe of comics. For instance, The Flash. Here you have Barry Allen running around as the Flash, making quippy one-liners. They essentially have put the name Barry Allen onto Wally West’s character and hoped no one would notice. Same with Hal Jordan. Even Batman has a couple of one-liners that seem VERY out of character.

I won’t spoil because not everyone will make it to the theater to see the film and will have to wait until its release on Blu-Ray later this month. It’s not bad, and it’s not good. It’s just there.

That’s why I’m going to give “Reign of the Supermen” 2 1/2 out of 5 stars. If you are a fan of Superman, check it out.

My man! After many jokes at its expense, it’s finally here… an Aquaman movie! But is this the film that gets the last laugh on critics and fans? Maybe! What I do know for sure is that this is the DCEU’s weirdest movie of all time! It’s actually a lot to pick through so I bring Ian Kerner in to talk about the film’s ins and outs and what works and what doesn’t. There are tons of SPOILERS so be warned as we answer lots of questions! Does this film setup a sequel? Does it help fixed the problematic DCEU films that came before it? Were the villains too over the top? Is a ‘Flashpoint’ movie the best way to save the DCEU? There’s lots to discuss in this special episode so enjoy!

Earlier this year the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) was on life support until Patty Jenkins revived hope with her blockbuster hit Wonder Woman. The release date was chosen specifically to build momentum for DCEU’s most pivotal installment to date, Justice League, which combines and introduces an elite army of superheroes synonymous to Marvel’s The Avengers. And with DCEU figurehead Zack Snyder’s unfortunate late-stage departure from the film and, coincidentally, The Avengers writer Joss Whedon’s claiming of the throne, no one knew what to expect from this wildly anticipated release.

Following the death of Superman (Henry Cavill), Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) and Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) learn of an other-worldly threat with devious plans of destroying Earth. Together they recruit the help of metahumans The Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) in order to combat the villain Steppenwolf (voice of Ciaran Hinds). But are they strong enough to resist the forceful army of Steppenwolf? If only Superman was still around to help.

Transitioning the formula to fit the comedic tone of the DCEU’s previous effort Wonder WomanJustice League continues with a dark-aura that’s lightened by timely humor. This is reasonable to expect with long-time Marvel scribe Joss Whedon crafting the screenplay. And although the final effect is nowhere near the level of Wonder Woman, mainly due a surprisingly low amount of energy and a complete level of predictability, Justice League still manages to satisfy a bit more than previous DCEU films like Man of SteelDawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. Gal Gadot continues to impress and Ezra Miller also delivers a standout performance, yet Affleck and new faces Jason Momoa and Ray Fisher aren’t nearly as successful. Furthermore, the film pridefully relies on a bombardment of mind-numbing visual effects that are in no way an acceptable substitute for a meaningful story or valuable character development. Justice League serves as another flat and superficial endeavor from the DCEU that won’t hold up over time.

Quantum Mechanix is known for their intricate figures and detailed prop replicas. Their booth at San Diego Comic-Con was a glorious gallery of new and upcoming products. They also had a store in the back, where attendees could get their hands on merchandise (some of which, for the very first time).

This year’s con marked the debut of their Wonder Woman Q-Fig Max. The figure is super-detailed with a bunch of different pieces (don’t worry –  it comes pre-assembled). I loved that both Wonder Woman and her mount share the same determination in their eyes.

Q-Fig’s tendency to have a whimsical side. The Batman and Superman Friendship Q-Fig is a perfect example of that. The contrast in expressions between the two heroes is hilarious and I could not help but smile when I saw it.

There were also prototype Q-Fig’s from the world of Harry Potter on display. The Harry and Hagrid: Race for Hogwarts Q-Fig Max will be the most complex in the series to date.

The Harry Potter on the Broom Q-Fig was also impressive. Harry’s entire body as well as his broom balance on that translucent blue swirl of “wind.”

Here was a figure I never thought I would see: a Good Feathers Q-Fig. This was also a prototype.

Quantum Mechanix is also known from their plush Q-Pals line. The majority of the ones on display were prototypes, with the exception of Supernatural‘s Sam Winchester, Castiel, and Dean Winchester.

And I absolutely adore this plush Niffler from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Funny story about this little guy: Quantum Mechanix hadn’t planned on selling it at SDCC but they received a small shipment early. Initially, they were just going to have a prototype on display. Needless to say, this adorable beast sold out before Day Three (which is when I got there). The good news is fans like myself can sign up on their site to be notified when the plush comes in-stock.

There was plenty of Firefly merchandise to be found. I could not get over how much thought and detail was in every figure. Everyone’s clothes are made of real fabric. That trait is standard for the 1:6 articulated figures but it was especially impressive in this set because of the intricacy of their outfits.

While the majority of the 1:6 scale articulated figures were based to Firefly or Star Trek but there were a few outliers. One that excited me in particular was Westley from The Princess Bride. He comes with both his masked face when he is the Dread Pirates Roberts as well as his traditional Westley face (“As you wish!”).

Star Trek saw plenty of representation at Quantum Mechanix’s booth, from prop weapons and badges to Tribble plushes to the already-mentioned 1:6 articulated figures. What I was most impressed from this series was the Captain’s Chair. It was to scale with the articulated figures and – here is the coolest part –  the buttons work! They make sounds and light-up when pressed.

The booth was also home to a 1:72 scale miniature of Star Lord’s ship, the Milano, from Guardians of the Galaxy. Once again, detail was king. For example, you could look inside the cockpit and see the seats and the control panel.

I had a blast looking at all the goods that we can expect in the future from Quantum Mechanix. You can check out more of the products on their site.

By now you’ve probably seen ‘Wonder Woman’, DC’s triumphant and glorious entry to their cinematic universe (in case you haven’t… here’s a SPOILER FREE podcast for you). And that means you’re ready for the next step: to have Ian Kerner drop in on the podcast to spoil the whole thing for you! That’s right! This one is totally spoiler filled as we try and turn over every stone of Patty Jenkins’ superhero epic! On the way, we compare and contrast with the other superhero films, imagine what the sequel will be like and talk about the future of the Justice League! Enjoy!

Zack Snyder might not be the most respected man in Hollywood right now (quite the opposite), but to be fair, the guy has the weight of an entire cinematic universe on his shoulders every day.

About an hour ago, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Snyder is suddenly stepping down from his role as director for the upcoming Justice League film alongside his wife Deborah Snyder who produces the DCEU films. The reason for stepping away is due to the sudden death of their daughter Autumn who committed suicide. While we don’t necessarily like his films, this must be incredibly hard on him and his family, so we here at Geekscape.net would like to wish Mr. Snyder the best and hope his family can make a recovery after such a tragic event.

In the meantime, Joss Whedon will take charge of Justice League, shooting extra scenes and finishing up the final edit of the film so that it can make its November 17th deadline. Once again, we wish Mr. Snyder and his family the best and hope they can overcome this.

It’s that wonderful time of the week again, new comic book day! Choosing what to read can be daunting (and expensive!). Don’t worry though, Geekscape has you covered. Each week we give a few best bets for a comic book that you’re sure to enjoy. Let’s get into it!

DC

DC is on such a high right now. Their Batman books are solid, their Superman books are solid. Young Animal is maturing. They’re pumping out tons of awesome content, but this week there is one title that jumps off my pull list…

Justice League/Power Rangers #1
📝 Tom Taylor
🎨 Stephen Byrne, Eduardo Nunez

Two of comics greatest teams team up for the very first time! Something terrible has happened in Angel Grove! When the Command Center is breached and the teleporters are damaged, Zack is flung into another universe, where he’s mistaken for a villain by a mysterious masked vigilante. Can the other Power Rangers get to their friend in time to save him from Batman? Co-published with BOOM! Studios.

Well, I’m sure we’ve all thought of it before in either our dreams, action figure battles, or discussions with friends and now we finally get to see it unfold in comic books! That’s right, it’s Power Rangers + Justice League. Need I say more?

Marvel

Jessica Jones #4
📝 Brian Michael Bendis
🎨 Michael Gaydos

Jessica Jones latest case has revealed a new hidden evil in the Marvel Universe. An evil so terrifying she was willing to rip her family apart to save them from it. But was the sacrifice enough? Another all-new blistering chapter of Marvel’s premier detective.

This series is getting good. It’ll scratch the itch while you wait for more Marvel Netflix content.

Happy New Year! After a nice holiday, I’m back and ready to talk comic books with you lovely people. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

Marvel

Mark Waid’s Avengers and Champions series’ have new issues out this week. Both are worth checking out, but neither of them are must-reads. Reminder: Black Widow, another Waid authored title (which had it’s ninth issue released over the holidays), is.

Beta Ray Bill is back in Jason Aaron and RB Silva’s The Unworthy Thor! Aaron tells great mythological tales and Silva’s art is so damn good. If you’re longing for the Thor of old, this one is for you.

The second issue of the new Nova series is out today too, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the first one so I’m looking forward to this.

DC

Justice League vs Suicide Squad was just beginning the last time we chatted, and now we’re a few issues in. What have you thought so far? It hasn’t wowed me much. The Suicide Squad books so far had done a great job of letting me get to know the characters in the Squad, however, the series has never done much to get me to care about Waller who plays a pivotal role in JLvSS. So a little lacking there. The battle we saw in issue 2 was pretty awesome though! Let’s see where issue three takes us.

Superman is about to enter crazy town.

“MULTIPLICITY” part one! The New Super-Man of China has been taken! The Red Son Superman of Earth-30 has been beaten! And who knows what’s happened to Sunshine Superman! Someone is collecting Supermen across the Multiverse-this looks like a job for our Kal-El as he is joined by Justice Incarnate in this multi-Earth epic!

If the Justice League of America Rebirth gets into motion this week with Justice League of America: The Atom Rebirth #1. We also have The Fall and Rise of Captain Atom #1. A character Alan Moore said influenced Doctor Manhattan, so maybe there will be more to this book than meets the eye.

Best Bets? Most excited for? I don’t know, nothing is jumping off the pull list this week. Maybe I’m still in a turkey coma?

What are your pulls?

Marvel

A lot of so-so Marvel books hit shelves today. Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows, Mosaic, and Power Man and Iron Fist to name a few.

More notable titles include:

lvX #1. Ok, I almost choked when I saw the price tag on this book, $5.99 is steep! Chances are the book will change the face of the Marvel Universe but the X-Men books ran me threw the dirt recently so my faith in this series is low.

Jessica Jones #3. You’d have no idea that it’s been basically 15 years since Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos first run on Jessica Jones (well, Alias). This books feels every bit as solid as their first run. Gaydo’s art has a very grounded in reality feel to it that makes the supernatural moments feel all the more memorable. The tone of this series very much matches that of Netflix’s Jessica Jones if you’re looking for more of that.

DC

You should be reading Action Comics and The Flash, both have been great since the beginning of Rebirth.

A couple of weeks ago I advised waiting for waiting for the current, long-running, Suicide Squad story arc, The Black Vault, to finish before jumping in for Justice League vs Suicide Squad but they tricked me. The Black Vault part 8, out today, also serves as the beginning of Justice League vs Suicide Squad.

Most Excited For, Best Bet, aka You Should Probably Start Reading

Reborn
📝 Mark Millar
🎨 Greg Capullo

MILLAR & CAPULLO’s epic sci-fifantasy story continues. Bonnie is captured by Dark Lands gangsters during her quest to find her missing husband—gangsters who will deliver her to evil General Frost and his boss, Lord Golgotha. But just as all hope seems lost, Bonnie’s warrior powers start kicking in.

I don’t know if the description does it justice or not. Millar’s words and storytelling is great but Capullo is knocking it out of this park with this title. His characters and world building are just off the charts good. If you’re a fan of Saga, this book will be up your alley. This third issue will probably determine whether it makes it on my Best Of 2016 list or not. Or maybe it already has a spot in it, haven’t thought about it enough.

Briefly: I have huge man crush on Joe akin to that of Pee Wee Herman in his latest adventure.

A week ago Ben Affleck had dropped a teaser bomb and showcased what seemed to be a screen test of ‘Deathstroke’ in his upcoming ‘Batman’ movie. Now it was announced that none other than the Adonis incarnate, Joe Manganiello, has been cast in the role. Known primarily for his delicious eye candy roles in ‘True Blood’ and ‘Magic Mike’.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bRcSA6fWZQ

DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns confirmed the casting to the Wall Street Journal in his first interview since his new role overseeing Warner Bros.’ movies based on DC characters.

It’s still not known whether ‘Deathstroke’ will have a cameo in “Justice League,” which is currently shooting in London.

While DC and Warner Bros continue to struggle with launching a critical and profitable DCEU film, that’s not stopping them from green lighting more films.

Announced today in a Variety exclusive, WB has hired Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman to direct a a Justice League Dark movie for DC’s upcoming cinematic universe slate. Along with Liman, Scott Rudin will be producing. Justice League Dark features lesser known, but still loved characters like John Constantine, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, and more as it’s intended to be a darker (obviously) version of the Justice League. While this sounds like a great way to get back on track, the question remains whether or not DC and WB can really bounce back after 3 mis-fires.

According to a recent open letter to WB president Kevin Tsujihara, not only has Suicide Squad been a mess from the start, but Wonder Woman is also having troubles of its own. Only time will tell if they can get back on track with WW & JL, or if they should just jump straight to a standalone Affleck Batman film and soft reboot the universe (it’s never too late.) Tell us what you think in the comments below!

Director Doug Liman on the set of JUMPER.

Briefly: This we did not expect.

Earlier today in the still-ongoing Warner Bros. panel in Hall H, the studio finally screened the first, impressive trailer for next Summer’s Wonder Woman.

Now, director Zack Snyder himself has debuted the first footage for Justice League.

The trailer re-introduces us to each member of the League, and begins with Ben Affleck’s Batman in search of Aquaman.

The tone looks starkly different than the dark and brooding Batman v. Superman, and offers a much more lighthearted feeling. As one would expect, it’s a gorgeous trailer with a bunch of slow motion… and the oft-questioned ‘The Flash’ effect actually really cool.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think!

👎 – Skip, read at your own risk
👌 – Okay, not great, not bad, you might find something to like here
💪 – Great, highly recommended

DC

👌 Aquaman #2
👌 Batman #2
💪 Green Arrow #2
👌 Green Lanterns #2
👌 Justice League Rebirth #1

I can’t get enough of DC’s Rebirth. Eventually, I’ll cut back (in fact, I almost skipped Green Lanterns) but I’ll wait until things get a little tougher to keep up with. Green Arrow has been blowing me away and is my favourite of the current Rebirth titles. Percy is telling a Green Arrow tale that is starting to feel a lot like a Frank Miller’s Born Again story arc for Daredevil. For those of you unfamiliar with the reference, it means good things, very good things.

Justice League Rebirth wasn’t as exciting as I was hoping it would be since it basically just served as an introduction to the team, but Hitch’s art provided enough action, spanning cities and giant monsters to make the issue enjoyable.

I don’t have much to say about the other titles. Batman is pretty solid so far, after two issues most of the chess pieces are in place and it looks like things are going to start getting really interesting for Batman, our new super-powered heroes, and the villain who is revealed by the issues conclusion. Green Lanterns and Aquaman are both decent enough reads, just not characters that I feel a strong connection to yet.

Marvel

👌 Amazing Spider-Man #15
👌 The Punisher #3

Last week’s Amazing Spider-Man was interesting. It looks like Peter, MJ, and Regent may remember the events of Secret Wars. This came out of left field, so I’m not sure what the implications of it could be but I’m excited to find out. The issue concludes with a shocking twist, leaving one of our characters lifeless (probably not, but maybe) on the ground. I’d recommend picking up issues #13, #14 and #15 and start familiarizing yourself with this series. I have a feeling Amazing Spider-Man is going to find itself in must-read territory very soon.

Sure, this Punisher run isn’t reinventing the wheel, but it has been a lot of fun so far. It has everything you’d expect from a Punisher book; the Punisher, bad guys who are after The Punisher, good guys who don’t know whether they’re after bad guys or the Punisher, and a whole lot of violence!

Image

💪 The Fix #4
💪 Paper Girls #7

I’ve previously mentioned The Fix isn’t as strong or funny of a title when the two characters aren’t together. The trend continues here as we see what Mac is up to. However, I found myself enjoying this issue as much as the first two. I can’t recommend this title enough, we’re only four issues in so go pick ’em up and get in on the fun!

I’m loving Vaughan’s Paper Girls. It is just so unlike anything I’ve ever read before. The art is a lot of fun and Vaughan’s plays with time travel (a concept that many would say has been done to death) in plenty of fun and inventive ways. This isn’t a series you can just start reading though, if you are interested I strongly suggest you begin with #1.

Book of the Week!

Green Arrow 2 Cover

Not only is the Green Arrow my favourite of the current Rebirth titles, it’s also my favourite book of the week!

Tony Kim is also known as “Crazy 4 Comic Con”, the human resource for all things comic book conventions! So of course we’re going to have him on the show to help us prep for SDCC next week! Beyond that though, Tony has launched Hero Within, a new high quality, geek oriented fashion line! We talk a bit about putting the line together and how he is starting with officially licensed Justice League styles! Also, we talk about the psychotic epidemic that is PokémonGO and whether or not it’s just a fad!

We all knew Warner Bros. had reserved a space in Hall H’s busy schedule, but we didn’t know exactly what they were going to be showing, until now.

This year, Conan O’Brien will be moderating the two hour panel. Here’s what they’ve got planned in Hall H:

“Wonder Woman” stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine and Connie Nielsen and director Patty Jenkins.

“Suicide Squad” stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Scott Eastwood, Cara Delevingne, Adam Beach and Karen Fukuhara, along with writer/director David Ayer.

Director Chris McKay and star Will Arnett from “The LEGO Batman Movie.”

Charlie Hunnam, who plays the title role in Guy Ritchie’s epic actioner “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword,” from Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures.

Stars Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman, Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell and director Jordan Vogt-Roberts of Warner Bros.’ and Legendary Pictures’ “Kong: Skull Island.”

Director David Yates with stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller and Colin Farrell from “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”

It’s a great line-up, but you may be scratching your head as to the lack of Justice League. Well, as there are every year inside of Hall H, Warner Bros. is bound to have some surprises in store. Ben Affleck has already stated he will be in attendance this year. So what can we expect? I’d say we can at least get a glimpse of some footage, along with an appearance of the full team on stage. You can find out more details about each film below:

“Wonder Woman”

“Wonder Woman” hits movie theaters around the world next summer when Gal Gadot returns as the title character in the epic action adventure from director Patty Jenkins. Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Joining Gadot in the international cast are Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, David Thewlis, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Ewen Bremner and Saïd Taghmaoui. Jenkins directs the film from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg and Geoff Johns, story by Zack Snyder & Allan Heinberg, based on characters from DC Entertainment. Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston. The film is produced by Charles Roven, Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder and Richard Suckle, with Rebecca Roven, Stephen Jones, Wesley Coller and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers. Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with RatPac-Dune Entertainment, an Atlas Entertainment/Cruel and Unusual production, “Wonder Woman.” The film is scheduled for release on June 2, 2017, and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. www.wonderwomanfilm.com

“Suicide Squad”

From director David Ayer comes “Suicide Squad,” starring Oscar nominee Will Smith, Oscar winner Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman and Oscar nominee Viola Davis. It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super-Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

Written and directed by Ayer based on the characters from DC, the film also stars Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Cara Delevingne, Adam Beach, and Karen Fukuhara in her feature film debut. It is produced by Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers. Warner Bros. Pictures presents, an Atlas Entertainment production, a film by David Ayer, “Suicide Squad.” The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. The film opens worldwide in 3D, and in 2D, and in select IMAX 3D theaters August 5, 2016. “Suicide Squad” is rated PG-13 by the MPAA for sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behavior, suggestive content and language. www.suicidesquad.com

“The LEGO Batman Movie”

In the irreverent spirit of fun that made “The LEGO® Movie” a worldwide phenomenon, the self-described leading man of that ensemble – LEGO Batman – stars in his own big-screen adventure. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.

Will Arnett reprises his starring role from “The LEGO Movie” as the voice of LEGO Batman, aka Bruce Wayne. Zach Galifianakis stars as The Joker; Michael Cera as the orphan Dick Grayson; Rosario Dawson as Barbara Gordon; and Ralph Fiennes as Alfred. “The LEGO® Batman Movie” is directed by Chris McKay and produced by Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. It is written by Seth Grahame-Smith and Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers, with additional screenplay material by Jared Stern & John Whittington, based on LEGO Construction Toys, in association with LEGO System AS. Chris McKay also serves as an executive producer, alongside Ryan Harris. A Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, “The LEGO Batman Movie” will open in theaters on February 10, 2017. It will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. www.LegoBatman.com

“Kong: Skull Island”

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ “Kong: Skull Island” reimagines the origin of the mythic Kong in a compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. In the film, a diverse team of explorers is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific—as beautiful as it is treacherous—unaware that they’re crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong.

“Kong: Skull Island” stars Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Oscar winner Brie Larson, John Goodman and John C. Reilly. The international ensemble cast also includes Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Thomas Mann, Shea Whigham, Toby Kebbell and Eugene Cordero. Vogt-Roberts directs the film from a screenplay by Max Borenstein, John Gatins, Dan Gilroy and Derek Connolly. “Kong: Skull Island” is produced by Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni with Mary Parent. The executive producers are Eric McLeod and Alex Garcia. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures Present a Legendary Pictures Production, “Kong: Skull Island.” The film will be released worldwide in 2D, 3D in select theatres, and IMAX March 10, 2017, from Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

“King Arthur: Legend of the Sword”

Acclaimed filmmaker Guy Ritchie brings his dynamic style to an original King Arthur epic, a sweeping fantasy action adventure starring Charlie Hunnam. Starring with Hunnam are Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou, Aidan Gillen, Oscar nominee Jude Law, and Eric Bana. Ritchie directs the film from a screenplay by Joby Harold and Guy Ritchie & Lionel Wigram, story by Joby Harold. “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is an all-new adventure returning us to the wizarding world created by J.K. Rowling. Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne stars in the central role of wizarding world magizoologist Newt Scamander, under the direction of David Yates, who helmed the last four “Harry Potter” blockbusters. The film opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.

Starring with Redmayne are Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, two-time Oscar nominee Samantha Morton, Oscar winner Jon Voight, Ron Perlman, Carmen Ejogo, Jenn Murray, Faith Wood-Blagrove and Colin Farrell. The film marks the screenwriting debut of J.K. Rowling, whose beloved Harry Potter books were adapted into the top-grossing film franchise of all time. Her script was inspired by the Hogwarts textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, written by her character Newt Scamander. The film reunites a number of people from the “Harry Potter” features, including producers David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram. Warner Bros. Pictures has slated “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” for worldwide release in 2D and 3D in select theatres and IMAX on November 18, 2016. www.fantasticbeasts.com

Sounds like a great time!

Some of the most fantastic panels have taken place inside of Hall H on Saturday night’s these past few years. However, we’re in for a change as it seems DCTV is doing away with our Hall H after dark parties. Instead, Warner Bros. Television has opted for owning Ballroom 20 for what seems to be the majority of Saturday. While this sounds great too, it’s also worth mentioning that Ballroom 20 does not sit nearly as many people has Hall H does. This may spell trouble for anyone looking to attend any one of DCTV’s panels, including Gotham and in addition to iZombie.

What’s also troubling here is that DCTV panels seem to be going on during the daytime on Saturday. This means DC fans may have to choose between a potential Justice League panel and their favorite DCTV show.

That being said, WBTV seems to have spreads its wings this year, even hosting a panels on Sunday! Check these listings and let us know where you’re heading this SDCC!

6:30 p.m.-7:20 p.m. Riverdale Pilot Screening and Q&A — Things aren’t always what you expect in Riverdale. Based on the iconic characters from Archie Comics and produced by Berlanti Productions (The Flash, Supergirl, Blindspot, Everwood), this one-hour drama is a bold, subversive take on the surreality of small-town life. As a new school year begins, the town of Riverdale is reeling from the recent, tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom — and nothing feels the same. Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) is still the all-American teen, but the summer’s events made him realize that he wants to pursue a career in music — and not follow in his dad’s footsteps — despite the sudden end of his forbidden relationship with Riverdale’s young music teacher, Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel). Which means Archie doesn’t have anyone who will mentor him — certainly not singer Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), who is only focused on her band, the soon-to-be-world-famous Pussycats. It’s all weighing heavily on Archie’s mind — as is his fractured friendship with budding writer and fellow classmate Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse). Meanwhile, girl-next-door Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) is anxious to see her crush Archie after being away all summer, but she’s not quite ready to reveal her true feelings to him. And Betty’s nerves — which are hardly soothed by her overbearing mother, Alice (Mädchen Amick) — aren’t the only thing holding her back. When a new student, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), arrives in town from New York with her mother Hermione (Marisol Nichols), there’s an undeniable spark between she and Archie, even though Veronica doesn’t want to risk her new friendship with Betty by making a play for Archie. And then there’s Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch)… Riverdale’s Queen Bee is happy to stir up trouble amongst Archie, Betty, and Veronica, but Cheryl is keeping secrets of her own. What, exactly, is she hiding about the mysterious death of her twin brother, Jason? Riverdale may look like a quiet, sleepy town, but there are dangers in the shadows. Riverdale makes its Comic-Con debut with a screening of the complete pilot episode, followed by a Q&A with series stars and executive producers. Riverdale is from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios, with executive producers Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Blindspot), Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Supergirl, Glee), Sarah Schechter (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Blindspot) and Jon Goldwater (Archie Comics). 7:25-8:15 p.m. Frequency Pilot Screening and Q&A — Based on the New Line feature film, Frequency is the story of a father and daughter who are supernaturally reunited two decades after his suspicious and untimely death. New York detective Raimy Sullivan was only 7 when her father, Frank Sullivan, an undercover cop, abandoned his family in pursuit of a case that led not only to his family’s breakup, but also his eventual death undercover. Always believing her dad died in disgrace as a corrupt cop, Raimy set forth to surpass him in law enforcement, rising through the ranks to detective. But everything she knows changes when somehow Raimy and Frank connect — across two decades — over Frank’s vintage ham radio in the garage. Where once Frank was lost in the shadows of his undercover work in 1996, he has now miraculously been found by his now-grown daughter in 2016. As they forge a new relationship while working together in two time periods to close an unsolved serial murder investigation, their emotional connection transcends time to not only repair the broken bonds of their family, but also defy fate and change the course of destiny. 8:20-9:15 p.m. Time After Time Pilot Screening and Q&A — Using the 1979 novel and movie as a launching point, Time After Time chronicles the epic adventures of a young H.G. Wells. At the age of 28, the 19th century scholar has yet to publish any of his landmark science fiction novels, but his idealistic thinking and radical ideas have led him to actually create a time machine. When his longtime friend — the charismatic (and secretly psychopathic) Dr. John Stevenson, aka Jack the Ripper — finds himself cornered by the authorities at Wells’ London home, he escapes to present-day New York City using the time machine. Naturally, Wells follows, but instead of the Utopian society he imagined would be in the future, he finds a world more aligned to Stevenson’s temperament. Fortunately, Wells meets up with Jane Walker, an assistant curator at a museum staging an exhibition on H.G. Wells, the Father of Science Fiction. As Wells and Jane come together, they will not only play a dangerous endgame with Stevenson, but also find themselves involved with the incredible characters and scenarios that inspired Wells’ War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, The Island of Dr. Moreau and more. An epic love story charged with danger and adventure, Time After Time gives an unpredictable spin on the mythology of H.G. Wells by looking at the world of today through the eyes of yesterday. Time After Time makes its Comic-Con debut with a screening of the complete pilot episode, followed by a Q&A with executive producers Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries, Dawson’s Creek, The Following, Scream movies) and Marcos Siega (Blindspot, The Following, The Vampire Diaries, Dexter, Cold Case, Veronica Mars) and series stars Freddie Stroma (Harry Potter films, Pitch Perfect, Game of Thrones, 13 Hours, UnREAL) and Genesis Rodriguez (Identity Thief, Man on a Ledge, Entourage, Big Hero 6). Based on the novel written by Karl Alexander and produced by Outerbanks Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television, Time After Time premieres midseason on ABC. We already know Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman will be making an appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con this year, but could a Justice League panel also be on the way?

Justice league

Yesterday, Ben Affleck himself said “We’ll be there,”  in response to a question as to whether or not he’ll be at SDCC this year. While he didn’t outright mention the Justice League film, we do know that the film is currently filming. Another possibility is that Affleck will be there to talk about his upcoming Batman solo-film.  Still, with Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman already making an appearance there, we might be in for one huge panel.

In any case, with Marvel making an appearance this year, after going MIA last year, SDCC 2016 is shaping up to be big.

Warner Bros. has just released the official synopsis and logo for the upcoming DC superhero team-up movie. Filming is well underway over in Europe so its a matter of time before information starts to leak from the set.

Here’s the synopsis:

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy.  Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat.  But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

With no word on who the “greater enemy” is we can only assume that it might just be Steppenwolf or Darkseid.

new batmobile

Along with the official synopsis they also gave us our first look at the new Batmobile. Looks like cross between the Tim Burton and the Christopher Nolan versions.

‘Justice League’ will star Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Mamoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Ezra Miller as The Flash with Willem Dafoe in a mystery role and J.K. Simmons playing Commissioner Gordon

The film, directed by Zack Snyder, will be released in theaters on November 17, 2017.

If you’re just joining DC Universe’s Animated Movie Universe, then you’ll have a lot of catching up to do. Depending on who you ask, catching up on DC’s Animated Movie Universe can be a chore or it can be a great way to pass the time in between episodes of The Flash. Now, if you’re all caught up, then next up on the list is the highly anticipated Justice League vs. Teen Titans.

Fresh off the anomaly that is Batman v Superman, DC fans may be looking to what’s next. Among some of the past DC animated movies, I have to say that Justice League vs. Teen Titans has one of the strong openings. The movie starts with the Legion of Doom launching a full fledged attack on the Hall of Justice. The action is about what you’d expect from a DC animated movie and it does not disappoint. In fact, it reminded me of some of the Justice League animated series episodes. The nostalgia for someone who experienced nearly every iteration of DC animated movies or shows will indeed pop up from time to time during this movie in particular. For example, those who watched shows like Young Justice and the Teen Titans show from the early 2000’s may see some familiar faces.

JLvsTT-Starfire-Robin-Nightwing

The roster for the Titans has been shaken up a bit to include Blue Beetle and Starfire as the team’s mentor. While it does feel like the Titans of old, it was a welcomed experience seeing this revised Titan group interacting with characters from past movies in this DC Animated Movie continuity. The blend of characters DC is setting up in the world is great and it keeps moving forward. The roster of Titans include Beast Boy, Blue Beetle, Raven, and Robin. However, it’s important to note that Robin is indeed Damian Wayne, who was introduced in Son of Batman (2014).

The title of this movie is a little misleading. There really isn’t a “war” that goes on between the Titans and the League, but there are skirmishes here and there. The actual plot of the movie is hidden well, and the title makes no reference to what the plot is actually about. While I’m not looking to spoil you, I will say that this movie in particular is very much a Teen Titans movie, rather than just another Justice League Story. Another thing this movie does right is wasting no time in telling us how the Titans were formed or how exactly they factor in with the League.

Ultimately, this movie acts as a sort of springboard for future Titan releases going forward. Their introduction into this universe in no way feels shoehorned or convenient. Instead, while moving the plot and character development forward, this movie also features some resolutions to character arcs that were started in Son of Batman and other movies from the same continuity. While it doesn’t replace Young Justice, or any of the other animated shows, this is the close as we’re going to get.

Aside from that, there are a couple of very suggestive scenes involving Starfire. These two scenes may make you uncomfortable if you’re watching with kids. Other than that, this movie’s action and story should satisfy kids and adults alike.

JLvsTT - BlueBeetle-1

Overall, this animated movie could have been better, but it definitely wasn’t the worst among the bunch. Perhaps my favorite thing about these string of movies is that they’re not all one-shots, and are instead part of a much larger story. At no point in these movies do I feel we as an audience are taking a step back to explain a Leaguer’s origin, or go over something for the 100th time. It’s a solid buy for any die-hard DC fan and a fun adventure for anyone looking to get into some of the DC lore.

For those of you wondering, here is the chronological order in which the DC Animated Movies were released:

Flashpoint Paradox post credit scene

Justice League War

Son of Batman

Justice League: Throne of Atlantis

Batman vs. Robin

Batman: Bad Blood

Justice League vs. Teen Titans

During the panel Q and A that took place after the screening, creators remarked that Teen Titan centric movies may be in the pipeline. This would mean that we would have separate stories involving the League and the Titans, but still existing in the same universe. This would also mean potential team-ups in the future and major crossover events.

Justice League vs. Teen Titans is available now via digital download and available on Blu-Ray/DVD on April 12th!

Way back in 2011, DC Comics hit the reset button on their universe, resulting in the launch of what is most commonly known as The New 52. Basically, all their previous titles were cancelled and they began renumbering their books (ie. Action Comics, which retained it’s original numbering since the 1930s started back at #1). This was met with mixed reviews from fans and let to some people, like me, to fall off the DC wagon completely. Now, DC wants us back.

Ok, their motivations might be more complex than that but to me, it actually feels like DC is attempting to fix some of their mistakes from the New 52 launch while not dismissing it entirely. So what are they actually doing? Basically, “rebirth” is a sexy way of saying “refresh.” All their titles will be getting new creative teams and they will go back to their original numbering as well as being priced at $2.99.

Rebirth will start on May 25th when Geoff Johns’ 80-page one-shot is released to set-up the storylines for the upcoming books, then the rest of Rebirth will play out throughout the summer.

In case I haven’t made it obvious, this is not a reboot of The New 52 universe. The DC Comics Twitter account tweeted out a ton of the new creative teams (don’t worry, I’ve copy and pasted a ton of links so you don’t have to go scrolling through their feed!). Before I leave you to that, I’ll say the ones that jumped off the screen for me were All Star Batman (Scott Snyder and John Romita Jr) and Suicide Squad (Philip Tan and Jim Lee). DC and Teen Titans fans should be happy today.

This morning, website TV Insider has reported that there is a brand new Teen Titans animated feature in the works. Launching sometime this spring, Justice League Vs. Teen Titans is about Robin being sent off to work with the titans after his unruly behavior causes the league a failed mission. While the cast from the original 2003 will not be reprising their roles, that’s no reason not to watch this since the new talent is looking to be top notch.  Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) is set to play Trigon, while Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story) is set to play Raven. For more info on casting (including a picture of Jon Bernthal recording his lines), check out the original article. Are you excited for a new action filled Teen Titans movie? About a month ago a picture made its round on the internet of a poster that popped up at the offices of Cartoon Network for a new animated Justice League. Now the new animated Justice League series was confirmed by Cartoon Network Canada. The new series which is rumored to be titled Justice League Action. Cartoon Network Canada responded to a fan question on their Facebook page stating “We will be premiering a new Justice League series, but not likely until next Fall.”

The last time a Justice League animated series aired was back in 2006 with Justice League Unlimited, which is set to be release on Blu-Ray soon. Going to add this to my must-watch viewing after with my daughter. We previously had went though the Teen Titans/Young Justice series and felt the void left by its cancellation and replacement with the more “kid friendly” Teen Titans Go.

With Batman Vs. Superman coming out March 25, 2016, it would make sense for an animated series to premier and get the kids excited to buy more toys.  Hopefully this is new show will up tot he same standards of its predecessors.

Last month, Machinima and DC/Warner Bros. unleashed the exclusive web series Justice League: Gods & Monsters Chronicles. Featuring the Justice League like you’ve never seen them before, the web series is tied to the upcoming Justice League: Gods & Monsters, coming to Blu-ray and On Demand on July 28. The three-part season has already been renewed for a second season next summer.

About a month before its online premiere, I sat down with DC head honcho Bruce Timm in New York City and talked with the man responsible for a solid portion of our childhoods on the exclusive series and what superheroes mean to our generation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNP88Go8C9w

The first thing I want to touch on before we talk Gods & Monsters, Machinima touted its unique millennial audience. Machinima captured my demographic, but you found this kind of success really early on with Batman: The Animated Series, Superman, Justice League. We grew up on that. That was calculated, wasn’t it? To get us from the cradle to the grave?

Bruce: I wish I could say I was that smart.

No?

Bruce: It was just lucky that whenever we did those shows, I just wanted to do a version of those characters that would make me happy. That would please my own inner 12-year-old, and just hoping that other people would still find the same thing about the cool that I did.

At the same time, I didn’t want to hold back on the storytelling aspects of it. I didn’t want to make it a show that only kids would enjoy. That it would be adult in a way that would be not overt, but that so if the parents were actually watching the show with her kids, that they can get hooked on it too.

It just turned out to be just a happy accident that all these years later, it kind of grabbed ahold of people’s imaginations, and here we are.

Let’s talk about the new project. It’s very exciting, obviously you’re taking some of the most iconic heroes and putting a new coat of paint on them in terms of depth and character. It’s not that we haven’t seen an evil Superman before, but what do you hope to do different in this new series? For Wonder Woman and Batman and for everybody else? What is really the goal of the series?

Bruce: I don’t want to say that the traditional version of those characters are worn out or tired, because it’s absolutely not true. I’m sure I’m going to be doing other movies and TV shows with the traditional version of this characters at some point as well. There’s tons of mileage in those guys yet, but at the same time there are certain restrictions that each character has built into them. Just as an example, for the most part I’m a traditionalist myself, and I do understand that you don’t want to push Superman too far over the edge and then suddenly he’s not Superman anymore. At the same time, everybody has their own line in the sand.

JLGM Chronicles1

When we did the first DTV Superman: Doomsday, it was a big part of the original comic that Superman killed Doomsday. They killed each other. Part of that was they beat the crap out of each other. If you’ve ever seen that comic, Superman’s like raw and bloody during it. When we were doing that movie version of it, between the time the comic came out and this time we did the movie, DC official policy was that Superman’s skin does not break. He cannot bleed. I was like, seriously? It’s one of the most famous Superman comics of all time, and we’re going to publicize the crap that we’re doing out of this … Publicize the crap out of the fact that we are doing this animated version of it, and you’re saying he can’t bleed? It’s ridiculous.

It was ridiculous.

Bruce: I literally had to get on the phone with the president of DC Comics and try to talk him out of it, and he’s just like, no. Sorry. You have to find some other way to kill him. The logo of the show is the big, bloody S, and Superman can’t bleed? For instance, things like I used to drive me crazy.

The great thing about this is that since these characters never existed before, even though their names did and parts of their origin stories or parts of their background, I can basically make whatever rules I want about these characters which is great. I get on an e-mail chain with DC Comics now, and the shoe’s on the other foot. They’re doing a spinoff comic book based on these versions of the characters, and they run the ideas pass me. Bruce, do you think this would be okay if Superman did this? I was like, let me think about it.

You are relishing that, aren’t you?

Bruce: I try not to be a dick about it, but at the same time, it is interesting to be the final say of what these characters get to do. To me, it’s just very freeing. Say with Superman, if Lois Lane shows up or Jimmy Olson or Lex Luthor either they react differently with Superman than the traditional Superman, or the characters themselves are completely different. In the Gods & Monsters movie, Lois is in the movie, and she and Superman can’t stand each other.

Wow.

Bruce: Luthor’s in it, and I don’t want to … I can’t talk too much about him, because the take on him that we came up with this pretty interesting and different and unusual. Again, we didn’t want to do just Lex Luthor again, we wanted to come up with and reinvent everybody. Kind of keep the core idea of who that character is, but give him a different back story. Give him a different, basically, an alternate timeline. He made different choices in his life then the real one did.

We’ll get back to characters in a second, but what I’m really intrigued about, actually, is the platform. You’re debuting on Machinima.

Bruce: Right.

I would assume that really frees up a lot of what you can and can’t do versus traditional television.

Bruce: Definitely.

What can we look forward to? How different will this show be from other series that were used to?

Bruce: The biggest difference besides the fact that I don’t have to send him through Broadcast Standards and Practices, so I don’t have to worry about making it appropriate for all ages. Technically, we are going under the assumption that it’s going to be around a PG-13. Between PG-13 and R.

Of course.

Bruce: That’s freeing to a degree in terms of content. Weirdly enough, just from a practical standpoint, the thing that’s most exciting to me is about the idea that each episode is 7 minutes long instead of 22 minutes long, and it’s not like each episode ends with a to be continued. Each episode is going to be a solid contained 7 minutes of story. That’s really interesting. It’s completely new for me, and it’s really exciting because it’s a challenge. I know how to tell a story in 20 minutes. I have to figure out now how to tell a story in 7 minutes, and what does that mean, and how do you do that so it’s not just 7 minutes of fighting? It’s 7 minutes of plot and drama and humor and everything else.

What was the learning curve for that going from years of 22 minutes to now, in these seven or so minutes?

Bruce: We’re still in it. I’m still in that learning curve. We’re figuring it out. I think the first three that we’ve done so far, I think are actually a really good example of the kinds of stuff we’ll be doing, because each of the three shorts is completely different.

One of them is, not a comedy, but it’s a little bit lighter in tone. It’s a little bit more of like an action buddy cop movie. One of them is more of a straightforward horror story, and the third one is kind of more of an epic tragedy. It was really interesting that we can do all the different kinds of diverse kinds of stories the normally do on a regular series, but just in condensed form. Some of the shorts will be a little bit heavier on action, and some of them will be more about mood. Some of them would be more about character, but each one is going to be a satisfying, self contained, 7 minute chunk.

I can assume why you’re going that direction, but can I ask why you’re choosing that direction as opposed to the traditional?

Bruce: That’s what Machinima asked us to do. They said we would like to be the length. We said, okay. We’ll figure out how to do that.

Just targeting those guys who are on the subway?

Bruce: That’s the idea, I guess, is the whole YouTube video idea that it’s not micro-content, but kind of macro-content.

I can’t talk up enough about how much Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League meant to a lot of kids my age. What do you hope fans to take away from these new iterations?

Bruce: Hopefully they’ll be intrigued by these new versions of them, and hopefully even though they can be quote unquote unlikable at times, hopefully they’ll still learn to like and hopefully, maybe never quite admire them, but even that’s a weird thing to me. Like I said, I sometimes think about that. Some of my favorite heroes are dicks. I think James Bond is a dick.

Of course he is.

Bruce: Indiana Jones. He’s a dick, you know, but he’s our dick. He’s our asshole. There’s something about them that still likable, still appealing even though they’re people you probably wouldn’t really want to know in real life.

That’s, again, something I wanted to bring to these characters is that … Batman has traditionally always been kind of a dick.

Haha! Yes!

Bruce: Just to kind of, like I said, play with different flavors of them.

You’ve had a very storied career. Again, I grew up watching your work and the work of DC Animation. Just looking back on your career, does it astound you how much you’ve accomplished and how much you and your teams have accomplished? Does it shock you at all how much influence you have had on generations?

Bruce: It does shock. It’s gratifying, and it’s … Fortunately with the very first show I produced, it was a big, big hit so that helped a lot. Every show since then has had varying degrees of success. It was nice to know even way back even before there really was much internet presence that the show seemed to be popular, and people really loved it and whatever, but it does kind of surprise me now when people your age or whatever come up to me at conventions,”I used to come home from grade school every day and watch Batman: The Animated Series.”

I did.

Bruce: I’m just like, that doesn’t make feel old at all.

I’m sorry!

Bruce: No. It’s all right. It is odd, but it’s good to know, though. It’s cool.

JLGM Chronicles4

What can you tell me about what was the initial nucleus of the idea of Gods & Monsters? Again, we’ve seen evil Superman, we’ve seen evil Batman before, but what about those two specifically?

Bruce: It was two different things that converged at the same time. It was a couple of years ago when they first brought out The New 52, and people were kind of freaking out that it was going to be like this big reboot, and it turned out to be actually a pretty soft reboot. Most of the stuff was cosmetic changes, costume changes, and what not.

At the same time, it got me thinking, I remember when they brought back Flash and Green Lantern in the late ’50s for their Silver Age incarnations. They basically kept the name and the gimmick, and they threw everything else out. They changed their costume, they changed the way their powers work, they changed the alter egos. That would be really ballsy if they did that with The New 52. I was a little disappointed that the reboot was as salt as it was, but at the same time I understood it from a commercial standpoint.

That got me thinking, if I did that with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, basically all the characters on DC Universe. If I did that radical of a revamp of them as they did with Flash and Green Lantern in the Silver Age, what would that be like? What would that mean? That just kind of got my wheels spinning, and this is where I ended up.

I know you’re not directly involved in any of the movies, like Batman v. Superman, but what do you think about the culture proliferating and becoming so massive. All these movies become events now.

Bruce: It’s weird. It’s weird to me. When I first got here in New York a couple of days ago, I checked into my hotel, and I walkout of the hotel for a cigarette, and right across the street from me is the Regal Theater, and it’s like big letters. Avengers. It’s like, wow. When I was a kid I couldn’t even imagine that I would be seeing an Avengers movie on a big screen. I went and saw at 7:00 AM because I had to. Yes. A freaking Ant-Man movie. They’re making an Ant-Man movie.

Right.

Bruce: I was like, what?

On DC’s side we’re getting Aquaman, we’re getting all the guys.

Bruce: Suicide Squad. I know, it’s crazy. It’s cool. It’s really cool. It’s stuff that I never even dreamed about, because I thought this is never going to happen. Who knows.

JLGM Chronicles2

There’s one question I really did want to ask you as with the godfathers of DC animation. Whenever there are pictures of civil unrest around the globe, and you see people wearing superhero T-shirts.

Bruce: That’s funny.

What do you think about people gravitating towards these characters in ways that go beyond the comic book page?

Bruce: That’s too deep for me, dude.

Really deep? I’m sorry.

Bruce: It’s okay. It’s just that I’m too shallow.

No problem.

Bruce: That’s an interesting though. I hadn’t noticed that before.

Eric: I guess next time you see an AP photo, just check it out. Going back to Gods & Monsters, what’s the most exciting thing, again, about this project as a whole? You’re targeting the Machinima audience, you’re going with Machinima. You could’ve gone anywhere else, but now you’re here. What gets you amped about the project as a whole?

Bruce: For one thing, even when we were doing Justice League, as much as I love Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, Flash, the Green Lantern, I really like the weirder, more obscure characters. Characters like The Question, Warlord, and wannabes to whoever. To me, that’s the stuff that is like, I just think that stuff is really fun to play around with. Here I get to create a whole new universe that’s full of characters I can mash up and mess around with. It’s the same kind of thing that made Justice League Unlimited fun for me. Having this huge toy box to play in.

It’s like a kid playing with his toys.

Bruce: Totally.

Just about some of those auxiliary characters, you showed us a weird ass Green Lantern that even I’ve never seen before.

Bruce: Right.

Eric: What are those meetings like? Is there a a lot of back-and-forth between?

Bruce: That was just something I just thought of on my own. I just thought of, if we’re going to do Green Lanterns, A, they’re space based. Yes. They’re technically aliens. That guy’s probably actually one of the more normal looking Green Lanterns because he’s at least a biped. We’ve seen a lot of alien Green Lanterns in the comics and stuff anyways, but at the same time, I wanted to make them so alien that they’re a little scary. They’re a little bit unrelatable for human beings. I didn’t want them to just be human beings in a funny suit like Star Trek aliens with bumpy heads and shit. Yes. That’s kind of where we’re going there. What does it mean to be a genuinely alien Green Lantern? Somebody who doesn’t think like a human? Doesn’t think anything at all in earthly terms.

Who were some of your animation idols growing up and influences? You’ve influenced a whole generation. I’m curious about who got you to pick up a pencil.

Bruce: Big ones were probably an awesome Disney animator named Marc Davis who’s one of my all time heroes. Classic Warner Bros. Looney Tunes director, Bob Clampett, was like God to me. Alex Toth who designed all those wonderful Hanna-Barbera superhero cartoons in the ’60s was a huge influence. That’s the big few I can think of.

Any last words you can say about Gods & Monsters?

Bruce: It’s awesome. Watch it.

Justice League: Gods & Monsters comes out July 28th.

James Wan has been given Aquaman and Robotech. Oh boy.

Could James Wan actually change what we think about big genre movies? Maybe, maybe not. But he might change how we think about Aquaman and giant robots in pop culture.

Before Mad Max introduced the world to wild stunts on cars and badass women, Furious 7 showed the world wild stunts on cars and badass women. James Wan’s direction of the film elevated what would have been another typical Hollywood movie into a master class in precise, action filmmaking. It was a boy genius being given a fully-equipped lab to go nuts.

This is what makes James Wan an excellent choice to helm these projects. For starters, I’m already stoked about Aquaman because the casting directors made the smartest move in the history of comic book casting: Jason Mamoa. Besides being an actual savage, Mamoa is a proud Pacific Islander. What other cultures are so attached to the ocean than they? This is why people made fun of Aquaman: He looked like a rich preppy guy from Connecticut that had one trip to the Caribbean and suddenly thinks he’s cultured. Tapping into the Greek roots of Atlantis just couldn’t work in the modern eye.

But Wan had nothing to do with that. It’s just one reason to pay attention to Aquaman, because let’s acknowledge it: It’s the toughest superhero movie Warner Bros. has to make. Aquaman has had the worst PR team while somehow a psychopath in a bat costume is world-renowned. But under Wan’s eye, Aquaman might single-handedly change the paradigm.

Just try to imagine what an ocean dweller who could summon sharks and whales could look like if it was directed like this:

I’m glad Warner Bros. acknowledges this, and they’ve made two of the smartest decisions they could ever make. While the Justice League movie is awkwardly coming together, at least there’s Aquaman to look forward to.

Then there’s Robotech.

There’s the obvious out of the way: It’s vehicular warfare. Recruiting a director who just sold the world on cars going boom is a no-brainer.

But remember, this isn’t just any director of the Fast series. It’s Wan. This is the guy who masterfully showed off a car jumping in between Abu Dhabi. If Wan can bring that sensibility into a scale as big as Robotech, it could actually change what we think about giant robot movies. I’m sick of people always bringing up Transformers as you are — it’s because of that narrative that people domestically didn’t really dig the modern masterpiece Pacific Rim.

Not to ride Wan’s dick too much, but I’m a legitimate fan of his vision and his helming over Aquaman and Robotech could be actual paradigm shifters in pop culture. We may no longer scoff at Aquaman or think giant robots are dumb movies.

We might actually think they’re pretty cool.
