With the exception of perhaps “Into The Spider-verse” for my money, Marvel’s animated outings have been somewhat lacking. DC always seems to be the frontrunner when it comes to that venue. The release of “Death of Superman” and “Reign of the Supermen” continues that trend but, for some reason, something doesn’t feel quite right.

Most people know the story of the Death of Superman and the aftermath thereof. The first film did a good job of encapsulating that first part of the story while making a few changes that don’t throw things off too much.

“Reign of the Supermen” however seems to kind of go off the rails and incorporates an almost new story when it comes to the 4 individuals parading around calling themselves Superman.

The principles are all there. Superboy, Cyborg Superman, Eradicator, and Steel. Each with their own reasons for donning the giant S on their chest, but that’s kind of where things got a little weird. DC seems to have a difficulty adapting things from the comics. They did a decent job with things like “Under the Red Hood” and the like, but for main stories where a major part of the Justice League is involved, they tend to keep it tied down to a certain universe that they are building instead of letting be its own story. Sometimes including variables that weren’t in the original story can make it better, but in this case it just kind of makes you scratch your head and say “Huh?”

Now I’m not saying it’s a bad story. It’s not. There is quality writing, animation and voice acting. There are just little things, aside from the aforementioned variables, that seem to stand out like a sore thumb, especially to avid readers of the DC Universe of comics. For instance, The Flash. Here you have Barry Allen running around as the Flash, making quippy one-liners. They essentially have put the name Barry Allen onto Wally West’s character and hoped no one would notice. Same with Hal Jordan. Even Batman has a couple of one-liners that seem VERY out of character.

I won’t spoil because not everyone will make it to the theater to see the film and will have to wait until its release on Blu-Ray later this month. It’s not bad, and it’s not good. It’s just there.

That’s why I’m going to give “Reign of the Supermen” 2 1/2 out of 5 stars. If you are a fan of Superman, check it out.

👎 – Skip, read at your own risk
👌 – Okay, not great, not bad, you might find something to like here
💪 – Great, highly recommended

A lot of great reads this past week, most of which weren’t from the big 2 publishers.

DC

DC’s Rebirth takes a week off but we did see the continuation of Action Comics and Detective Comics, as well as #1’s of Aquaman, The Flash, and Wonder Woman. All these stories are solid but none of them have earned must-read status.

👌 Action Comics #958
This is perhaps the most intimidating book if you are new to the DC Universe. We have a new Superman, a Lex Luthor Superman, and a Clark Kent who apparently isn’t a Superman. However, not a lot of that matters this issue because it’s mostly one great big battle with Doomsday!

👎 Detective Comics #935
In my opinion, this is the least interesting of DC’s new offerings. This book in particular starts out with something super exciting but then pulls the carpet out from beneath us and leaves us with a relatively uninteresting story that is struggling to find any identity.

👌 Aquaman #1
This may be my favourite of DC’s releases this week. Walker’s art on this is stellar. I was worried an Aquaman title could get weighed down by too much politics but so far Abnett is balancing the politics with equal parts action. The action sequences at the end of this issue were gorgeous, as the characters battle isn’t separated by panels but by the way the water flows.

👌 The Flash #1
This may also be my favourite of DC’s releases this week, I just can’t decide! Williamson is really focusing on the theme of despite the Flash’s speed, he isn’t able to be everywhere at once, and therefore can’t help everyone. For me this premise is interesting enough to explore for a few issues, but much like last week’s Batman #1, this book takes a twist at the end that leaves me wondering what the heck is going to happen next!

👎 Wonder Woman #1
It may not be a popular opinion but for whatever reason, this book just hasn’t worked for me yet. I don’t think it’s any fault of the creators, Rucka and Sharp, I think it’s just my unfamiliarity with the character of Wonder Woman. There are times during this issue where I feel completely lost and the story isn’t interesting enough to drive me to do any further research.

Marvel

More Civil Snore…

👎 Captain America – Sam Wilson #10
Another title that I read because of the Civil War II stamp on it, another title that I’m let down by. Aside from Rhode’s funeral, I’m unsure how this ties in at all. Don’t spend your time reading Spencer’s Marvel stuff, checkout The Fix instead!

👎 Civil War II – Choosing Sides #1
This book isn’t worth your money. I don’t have anything else to say.

Power Man and Iron Fist Cover
💪 Power Man and Iron Fist #5
Is it any coincidence that one of Marvel’s only books that isn’t a part of Civil War II is awesome? The fifth issue serves as more of a transition from the last arc to the next one. If you didn’t read this issue, you wouldn’t miss much but there are enough laughs in here to make it worth while.

Archie Comics

Archie Cover
💪 Archie #9
If a comic book has Mark Waid’s name on it, you ain’t going to regret reading it. I’ve discussed how great Archie is in previous Weekly Reads and the series continues to gain momentum. Archie Comics is doing such a great job with it’s IP right now, I don’t think they’re making anything that isn’t awesome!

Dark Horse

Dept H Cover
💪 Dept. H #3
Another title I’ve gushed over previously. The comic is as good as ever. This is a must read if you’re looking for a non superhero comic. Instead of gushing over the issue, I’ll talk about how awesome of a moment it was to see Cullen Bunn (writer of Harrow County, Uncanny X-Men) wrote into the letter page. Note: I only read the letter page of books that I love. Guys, what else do I have to say, this book is a must read! Matt’s writing is awesome, his love for comics comes through the pages, Sharlene’s watercolours are unlike anything else I’ve seen in comics. Love, love, love this book!

BOOM! Studios

Mighty-Morphin-Power-Rangers-004-Cover
💪 Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers #4
This series is better than I ever could have imagined. Perhaps I shouldn’t be giving it strong status because if you aren’t a Power Rangers fan this might not be up your alley, but I think you’d be surprised. Sure, this is a Power Rangers story but the themes of team building, trust, insecurity are something anyone can relate to. If you’re a Power Rangers fan, this book is a no brainer, if not, I think you still might be able to find something to love here.

Note: Catch last week’s recap right here!

The Flash returned this week with an episode that delves into two families: The West family, and the Snart family. Obviously ‘Family of Rouges’ is in direct reference into Snart’s family, but it was interesting to see Joe in a different light this episode. We constantly see the good side of Joe, the side that acts as a moral compass for Barry. This time, it was Barry who acted as a moral compass for Joe when he needed help dealing with a mistake from his past. Let’s get to it!

Warning: Spoilers Ahead!

Unfortunately, this episode felt like a filler episode. However, while that’s usually said in a negative connotation, I must admit that in no way was this episode bad. Despite the filler attributes, ‘Family of Rouges’ did not disappoint in giving fans things they didn’t even know they wanted.

Flash 203

First, how awesome was Michael Ironside? I mean, it’s hard not to like him. While everyone has their first Ironside encounters from multiple mediums, I found it to be a nice, maybe unintentional, shout out to the Splinter Cell franchise. Fans of the video game series know that Ironside voiced Sam Fisher up until the latest Splinter Cell installment. In this episode, when Barry went undercover, he introduced himself as “Sam.” Other than that, unfortunately, I couldn’t find any more easter eggs. However, should any surface after publication, I’ll be sure to update the article.

Captain Cold

Snart’s relationship seemed to be spot on. We all know Wentworth Miller’s fantastic portrayal of Captain Cold, and this week, we got an explanation of what made Snart, well, cold. In the comics, Snart’s father was just the same; abusive, drunk, and dangerous. It would seem now, a few decades later, Snart got his revenge on his father by killing him.

Flash 203

Later in the episode, Snart talked with Barry at Iron Heights. During the conversation, Snart alluded that he wouldn’t be locked up for long. Of course, we all know Snart will be getting out one way or another due to his Legends of Tomorrow obligation. This means either Heat Wave will break him out or Rip Hunter will request Snart to be removed from the Meta-Human wing at Iron Heights.

Firestorm

While the Stein collapse didn’t get resolved this episode, as I had hoped, the plot did advance…a little. Right before collapsing for a second time, Stein began to seize and even erupted into a blue flame. Barry and company don’t know what’s going on with him, but I suspect his body may be going through withdrawals from not fusing with Ronnie for a few months.

Flash 203

In any case, it’s looking like we’ll definitely find out more on Firestorm next week.

Harrison Wells

We have another Wells sighting, this time, even creepier than the last. Previously, we saw a glimpse of Earth 2 along with Earth 2 Harrison Wells. Last week, we also heard Wells referenced as the “savior of Central City” in Earth 2.

Flash 203

In what I regard as a foolish mistake, Jay Garrick and the scientific minds of STAR Labs decided to leave a portal to Earth 2 open. While no one was around, in comes Harrison Wells from Earth 2. Wells was dressed in plainclothes, which leads me to believe he knows exactly what he’s doing by entering Earth 1 through the portal. Does he have any relation to Earth 1 Wells? IS he Earth 1 Wells? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Crazy Zoom Theory of the Week

Alright, alright. I know two weeks ago I said Jay Garrick could be Zoom. But maybe I was wrong. Now, in the event that I’m wrong, I’d like to throw my support into another popular theory that’s going around.

Flash 202

As the series is advancing, Barry is sorting out who can and cannot trust. Last season, Barry was betrayed by his idol, and someone who he sometimes had more trust in than anyone else. Early on, in this season, by way of Jay Garrick and Atom Smasher, we learned that doppelgangers could exist on other Earths. Well, to me, it’s looking like Earth 2 Barry is Zoom.

Of course, there has to be some similarities between doppelgangers. These similarities could be fears, emotions, and small personality traits. If Barry would to see his doppelganger be capable of such evil, then Barry would be faced with the most difficult question yet: Can he trust himself? Like with all good things, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens!

Did I miss something? Have a crazy theory of your own? Don’t be afraid to comment! As always, thanks for reading!

Barry Allen is back again, and this time, with friends! We all knew Garrick was coming, and we finally got to see him in action. Let’s get to it!

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

At the start of this second episode, viewers were schooled on the relationship between Earth 1 and Earth 2. Avid comic readers will have extensive knowledge on the differences and similarities that exist between the two Earths, and more, but I felt we got a pretty good introduction to the multiverse for non-comic readers. Along with the mutiverse, we also got introductions to Patty Spivot, a young officer who eventually convinces Joe West to be on the meta-human task force, and Iris’ mother. It’s strange Iris’ mother would come around now after all these years, but we’ll probably get a dose of family drama for at least a few weeks. Furthermore, we also got some more clarity around Zoom and what his intentions are. According to Garrick, Zoom is an evil speedster who won’t stop until he’s the only speedster existing in the multiverse.

Flash 204

In Garrick’s flashback, Zoom had Garrick beat and was about to kill him when the singularity opened up and pulled Jay in. Zoom, however, made no attempt to cross into the singularity which tells us either he has his own way to travel inter-dimensionally, or he eventually found his own way after the singularity event. In this episode, we also found out there are a total of 52 “breaches” around Central City. I suspect one or more of these episodes will deal with these breaches. However, we must remember the largest breach in Central City happens to be at STAR Labs. After that reveal, Professor Stein collapsed, which is what episode 3 will probably open on. Overall, this episode treated the fans while building on new reveals. Now, let’s hit on a few things you may have missed.

Swamp Thing

Yes, that Swamp Thing. In the greenhouse Sand Demon was using as a hideout, Cisco was able to use his vibe-powers to peer inside. While there, he got a look at a name that would eventually lead him to pinpoint Sand Demon’s location. The name? Woodrue, as in Jason Woodrue.

Flash 204

While Woodrue isn’t necessarily the Swamp Thing, he has played both savior and adversary of Alec Holland, aka the Swamp Thing. Woodrue’s known aliases are Plant Master, Seeder, Floro, and Floronic Man. He uses his plant powers for good and evil and has also been in the Secret Society of Super-Villains. It’s also worthy to note that during his time as Plant Master, he often played villain against the Atom, who already exists in this universe.

Vibe

Over the last two episodes, we’ve seen Vibe get more of a hold on his powers. According to Cisco, the “vibes” went away after the singularity event, but resurfaced six months later when Flash battled Atom Smasher. In this episode, Cisco was able to go back to his lab and use his power intentionally by touching some of Sand Demon’s evidence.

Flash 203

It would seem he’s on a path to control and would be a great asset to the Flash team. For right now, Stein is the only present person that knows of Cisco’s powers. This is due to Cisco’s belief that his powers were gifted to him with evil intentions by Wells before the end of season one. I’m not sure how I feel about a costume for Cisco, but some Vibe glasses would be pretty cool every now and then.

vibedcnation

Blackgate Penitentiary

Blackgate was mentioned in last night’s episode sort of offhandedly when Detective West was interrogating Sand Demon’s doppelgänger. Blackgate isn’t in Central City, or even Star City. Blackgate is located on a small island in Gotham Bay, Gotham. This marks the second reference to Gotham in The Flash, with the first reference being tucked away in the newspaper from the year 2024.

Zoom and Jay Garrick

Last night, we got our first good look at Zoom, both in action and as still as he could have been. Before seeing him, all we knew was that Zoom was to be voiced by Tony Todd. Last week, we were told Zoom was behind Atom Smasher’s attempt at Barry’s life. This week, we actually saw Zoom give Sand Demon the same assignment. It would appear as if Zoom offered Sand Demon the same reward for killing Flash, which was a ticket home back to Earth 2. Whether or not Zoom is prepared to make good on that promise is undetermined. It is strange that Zoom doesn’t just come after the Flash himself. Could it be he’s suffering from a bit of power drainage too? Garrick completely lost his while other meta-humans are able to retain their powers.

Flash 202

The loss of speed, and connection to the speedforce, has happened quite a few times in comics. However, Garrick’s situation brought up one particular arc that began in Flash Vol. 2 #165 in which Wally West, who was Flash at the time, loses his connection to the speedforce entirely when he crossed over into a parallel dimension. We’ll just have to wait and see if Garrick can re-establish his connection to the speedforce somewhere down the line.

Earth 2

In both Jay Garrick’s flashback and the stinger at the end of the episode, we were able to get a good look at what Earth 2 looks like. The art style, clothes, and architecture are noticeably different. It would also seem that their technology is a bit behind ours, even though we’re both in the year 2015.

Flash 202

The tour guide inside STAR Labs stated that the company was created in 1991 by the “savior” of Central City, Harrison Wells. It’s hard to trust Wells’ smirk at the end of the episode and almost seems to suggest that this is the same Wells that left last season. As to how he saved Central City is a mystery. It’s possible that Wells is the one who closed the singularity on Earth 2’s end while Firestorm and Flash were responsible for closing it on Earth 1.

Flash 202

Who knows, maybe this Wells isn’t all bad. In fact, it would be awesome to see Wells and Barry working together again. In any case, we’ll have to wait and see.

Did I miss anything? Confused about something? Don’t be afraid to comment! See you next week and thanks for reading!

It’s been a long summer without The Flash, but it’s back now, and it got off to a great start. Season one of The Flash steadily built mystery and intrigue that lead to the creation of a singularity, which seemed to be impossible to stop. After watching the episode tonight, I can safely say the excitement around season one’s finale definitely carried over.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

The first episode of the second season takes place six months after the singularity event. Since then, a few things have changed. For one, Barry has since worked by himself after feeling responsible for Ronnie’s death. Before we go deeper into this, it’s important to note that the death of Ronnie is not the death of Firestorm. Firestorm, as we all know, will appear in the upcoming Legends of Tomorrow series. Still, Ronnie’s death has had a considerable impact. The singularity experience prompted a dream sequence that opened the episode with all of Barry’s friends around him, and ultimately vanishing.

Screen Shot 2015-10-06 at 7.30.53 PM

Through the episode, the group copes with Ronnie’s death and Barry eventually lets everyone back in to STAR Labs, which belongs to him now. The ownership of STAR Labs was left to Barry in the form of a living will. The message was delivered via Harrison Wells’ lawyer, who handed Barry a USB drive containing a video message. The video message also contained Wells’ confession of Nora Allen’s murder, which lead to Barry’s dad, Henry, being released.

Henry Allen

Having just been released from prison after fourteen years, it’s understandable if Henry has a hard time adjusting to normal life again. Henry tries, I guess, for approximately one evening before telling Barry he has to leave the city.

Flash 2x1 Henry

It’s a little strange, and frankly, a little lazy if Henry has to disappear from the show just because he has to readjust for a time. It almost felt like a cop out. Almost. If there’s one constant about The Flash, it’s to never take things at face value. It’s quite possible Henry has an agenda that requires his presence elsewhere. Before leaving, he did tell Barry that he would be back if he ever needed him. With Zoom coming, that time may be soon.

Atom Smasher

Our first Meta-Human encounter became Atom Smasher. This was an interesting choice for our first villain of season two, mostly because of Atom Smasher’s history. In the comics, Atom Smasher is of Earth 2 origin and often finds himself hanging around JLA members. That’s right; for those of you non-comic readers, Atom Smasher’s allegiance is with the good guys. So why was he a villain in this Flash universe?

AtomSmasher Comic

We know one of the first crimes Atom Smasher committed was killing, well, himself – or a version of himself. It’s quite possible that the villain Atom Smasher is not of this current Flash universe and is instead from another universe where his intentions aren’t so good.

The Flash -- "The Man Who Saved Central City" -- Image FLA201a_0168b -- Pictured: Adam Copeland as Atom-Smasher -- Photo: Cate Cameron /The CW -- © 2015 The CW Network, LLC. All rights reserved

We also know Zoom, the big baddie for this season, is the one who presumably brought him to this universe and most definitely promised to take him home.  Having Atom Smasher kill his counterpart of his universe could have been Zoom’s sick way of having Smasher prove himself. Whatever the case may be, it’s confirmed Zoom is here and is putting out hits on Barry.

Jay Garrick

Well, that didn’t take long. We got our first glimpse of Jay Garrick early in the episode snapping some pics of Barry at a crime scene. It’s easy to guess as to why Garrick was following Barry around, but why the pics? We see that Garrick was able to walk right into STAR Labs at the end of the episode, but it was just him. Also, if Garrick had been following Barry around, he would have presumably been at the Flash Day event. Why not help him out then?

Flash 2x1 Garrick

Back in the season one finale, we’ve seen evidence that a portal to different universes had been created and may have been open long enough for things to pass through. We’ve even peered into this multiverse when Barry was running around the particle accelerator. In that same episode, we saw Garrick’s helmet fly out of the portal when Barry was gone. Snapping the pics leads me to believe Garrick isn’t alone and, for right now, puts him in an untrustworthy light. Maybe Garrick has no idea what’s going on in this current universe and is researching everything about The Flash, or maybe not. For all we know, Jay Garrick is Professor Zoom in disguise. The pictures could have been used to show Atom Smasher who The Flash was. After all, Atom Smasher did say he had been dealt a curveball when Barry appeared at his hideout, claiming, “I thought I was going to have to come looking for you.”

“I think I saw it in a comic book somewhere.”

Flash 2x1 White Emblem

White Emblem

This development is interesting. Over the summer, my friend and I were debating on whether the emblem change would come naturally or because the future would influence the change. Tonight, we got our answer. It’ll be interesting to see what else the group, especially Barry, takes into account having the extra knowledge.

Questions? Comments? Fire away! As always, thanks for reading!

You read that right! While the suit looks mostly the same, the white emblem is more than enough to get fans excited. This is coming off numerous announcements including the casting of Captain Cold’s father and other casting news announced at San Diego Comic-Con two weeks ago.

The show’s executive producer, Greg Berlanti, has previously noted that the show will delve more into comic book storylines. This change in the emblem is a start!

Who do you think will inspire the emblem change? Barry or Cisco?

Everyone has someone to answer to. Michael Ironside has been cast as Lewis Snart, an abusive criminal. Fans of the lore and show will realize that Ironside will be doing double-duty as a father to both Cold (Wentworth Miller) and Lisa Snart/Golden Glider (Peyton List).

Ironside will be making his first guest appearance in the third episode of the season, appropriately titled, Family of Rouges, in which Lewis Snart returns to Central City after being released from prison. Of course, Miller and List will costar as Captain Cold and Golden Glider respectively.

Michael Ironside

This is coming after an already big announcement of the inclusion of Wally West, Jay Garrick, Patty Spivot, and Professor Zoom.

CW has decided to give a full series order to the Arrow-Flash spinoff DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. This is exciting news since Flash and Arrow are firing on all cylinders. When it comes down to the comic adaptations to television, DC seems to be reigning supreme so far. With Supergirl being ordered into a season and iZombie picked up for a second season the executive producers Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti seem to do no wrong.

‘DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’  is set to star Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer/The Atom), Wentworth Miller (Leonard Snart/Captain Cold), Dominic Purcell (Mick Rory, Heat Wave), Victor Garber (Martin Stein/Firestorm), Ciara Renee (Kendra Saunders, Hawkgirl), Franz Drameh (Jay Jackson) and Caity Lotz in an unidentified role, since her Arrow character, Sara Lance, unfortunatly died this season. Which sucks since I believe she is a more believable Black Canary than her sister.

arrow-01_612x380 (1)

In Legends, when heroes alone are not enough, the world needs legends. Having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat—one in which not only is the planet at stake, but all of time itself. Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known?

Television just keeps getting better and better! An Arrow/Flash spinoff being described as a superhero team-up is in the works at The CW.

Brandon Routh (Arrow’s The Atom), Victor Garber (Flash’s Dr. Martin Stein), Wentworth Miller (Flash’s villain Captain Cold), and Caity Lotz (Arrow’s Sara Lance) are set to star in the currently untitled series.

Since it is still in the early stages of development it is still possible for other Arrow/Flash characters to make their way into the new spinoff. The show is also set to include three major DC Comics characters who have yet to appear in a TV series!

Does the Arrow/Flash spinoff got you excited? Who do you think the new characters will be? Let us know in the comments below!

JUSTICE LEAGUE #11
Written by Geoff Johns
Pencils & Cover by Jim Lee
Backup Pencils by Gary Frank

After the strength of The Avengers, a Justice League movie is definitely happening. Or is it?

Geekscape’s own Uncanny Shawn Madden argues that a Justice League movie won’t work now, but let me offer a few points in the film’s favor:

1-No Need For Origin Stories

In 2008, my non-geek friends couldn’t have picked Iron Man out of a lineup. The insignia of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, on the other hand, are known all over the world. Even my immigrant grandparents know DC’s Trinity (though to be fair, all immigrants know Superman, the ultimate refugee).

Marvel needed 4 set-up movies, DC doesn’t. Everyone knows Batman and Superman’s origin stories (or orphan stories). For better or worse, the American public still has the idea of a Green Lantern ring fresh in their minds.

2-Years of Groundwork

Warner Brothers has already been running the best Justice League ad campaign for over 20 years: cartoons.

In 1992, Bruce Timm gave us Batman: The Animated Series and a nonstop series of quality TV shows and features since, including this year’s epic Justice League: DOOM. Even before that, we had Super Friends. In fact, DC superheroes have been on celluloid for over 70 years.

Kids today know who the Justice League is- and so do the kids of yesterday.

3-Smart Audiences

People are familiar with the concept of different actors playing the same part. No one freaked out when they replaced Aunt Viv on Fresh Prince or even Darrin on Bewitched. There have been 6 official James Bonds!

The audience is OK with new actors, as long as they’re the right actors. So who are the right actors for a Justice League movie? Here are some options:

The Big Three

ARMIE HAMMER as SUPERMAN

He has the build, the eyes, the commanding presence. And that fantastic booming voice! Hammer has already played a dual role as the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network, preparing him for playing Clark Kent. But who wants to see Supes act mild-mannered in a League flick anyway?

SAM WORTHINGTON as BATMAN

We already know Worthington can handle action- he’s been a terminator and a demi-god. But the actor can also handle intense emotion. Check out the measured fury he brought to his performance as a frustrated cop in last year’s indie Texas Killing Fields.

AISHA TYLER as WONDER WOMAN

Few actresses have the beauty, the body, and the talent to be remotely credible as the world’s premiere superheroine. Peruse Tyler’s body of work and you’ll see such varied performances as a sarcastic spy on Archer and a mutilated Somalian model in Nip/Tuck. Peruse her body and you’ll see an athletic 6-foot beauty who would have no trouble playing the Amazon warrior.

For some other Wonder Women, check out this classic Geekscape article.

The League

MICHAEL ROSENBAUM as THE FLASH

Not only does Rosenbaum look the part- he’s already played The Flash on 56 episodes of the Justice League cartoon series, where he stressed Wally West’s humor and perseverance.

ROGER R. CROSS as JOHN STEWART

Cross has already shown he can be a team player as able field team leader Curtis on 24. He has just the right gravity and self-control to play the ex-Marine wielder of the Green Lantern’s light.

KATE MARA as HAWKGIRL

Mara is a hardworking actress with a great range who would look amazing in the costume. And what other actress can you name with mace experience under their belt, as Mara got in last year’s Ironclad?

KEEGAN MICHAEL KEY as MARTIAN MANHUNTER

When most people think of Martian Manhunter, they hear the bass timbre of Carl Lumbly’s voice. But Key, who shows his chameleonic abilities on his own sketch show Key and Peele, with his tall, wiry frame, would be a good fit for both J’onzz’s human and original martian forms and was born to perform the motion capture necessary to portray the shapeshifting alien.

The Alternates:

NORA ZEHETNER as ZATANNA

Zehetner is a dead ringer for the pixie prestidigitarian, and you can see her dangerous side as a femme fatale in the 2005 high school neo-noir thriller Brick.

MICHAEL CUDLITZ as GUY GARDNER

It’s a short leap from gruff cop to gruff space cop for a veteran actor like Cudlitz, who is used to dealing with those that worship evil’s might day-in and day-out on TNT’s Southland.

MANDY MOORE as BLACK CANARY

We know Moore has the pipes and the proper hair color (Canary is really a brunette too). She also has the nerd cred, recently portraying Lois Lane in the “Death and Return of Superman” Internet short.

The Villains:

HUGH LAURIE as BRAINIAC

It’s only been a few weeks, and I already miss Laurie’s brilliant but misanthropic performance as House, M.D. Imagine how deliciously evil he could be as the malevolent android.

ROBERT JOHN BURKE as METALLO

Burke has already been part machine in Robocop 3, but for a truly interesting villain, check out his nihilistic turn as an immortal monster in No Such Thing.

JASON MOMOA as VANDAL SAVAGE

Speaking of immortal, Savage’s strength and intellect make him a formidable foe for the entire League. Momoa was a barbarian twice last year, but he brought extra depth to his role as Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones.

RON PERLMAN as SOLOMON GRUNDY

Who else could play the empowered zombie? Perlman could bring pathos and power to a mostly silent role, just as he did in 1981’s Quest for Fire. As a bonus, who doesn’t want to see Hellboy punch Superman?

JOSH PENCE as BIZARRO

OK, Superman’s warped mirror image might be a hard sell to general audiences, but if they do go with Bizarro, here’s the perfect casting. Pence has already played Armie Hammer’s evil twin as the body double for Tyler Winklevoss in The Social Network.

By now i’m sure everyone has heard that DC realized that Marvel did something genius with ‘The Avengers’ and have tried to get into the ring by pushing forward with a Justice League movie. Great idea right? I mean fans have been wanting this for years. But… can it work? I mean ‘The Avengers’ worked so why can’t this? Well, i’m here to burst your bubble (I apologize in advance) with the five main reasons at this point it will not work.

5. No back story for the main characters.

So lets say The Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Superman, Green Lantern and Batman are the team they pick for this. Because lets be honest The Atom, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter are going to get left out. Tell me why they’re only pushing forward on a Justice League and Wonder Woman movie before fleshing out the others? I mean… some people complained that Hawkeye had no development in ‘The Avengers’ (I disagree by the way) but just throwing someone like The Flash in there? Aquaman? Okay… I won’t go see Aquaman. You have me there DC! Hawkman? Maybe. That’s fail part one DC.

4. Picking an established writer who knows how to handle something of this scale.

Look… Will Beall could be great. He could be the next big thing for all I know. But what has he done? What makes DC so sure of his guy that we should have faith in him? We were all supposed to trust Brett Ratner with ‘X3’ and we all saw how that turned out. Strike two.

3. Actors. Actors. Actors.

One of the big draw points of seeing ‘The Avengers’ (I keep referring to this because we all know this is what made DC push this project forward) was that we not only trusted the director but we trusted the actors. Minus Mark Ruffalo (who excelled as Bruce Banner) we knew these actors could pull this off and we couldn’t wait to see them together. Minus maybe one or two actors we will know nothing about this casts ability to pull off these roles. And i’ll elaborate more on this when I get to number one.

2. DC’s horrible track record and lack of attempting to establish any form of continuity.

And you would think that Warner Bros. would be making the best of these types of films yet have been disappointing to date. Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder have been DC’s saviors with the ‘Dark Knight Trilogy’, ‘Watchmen’ and hopefully ‘Man Of Steel’. But other than that? ‘Steel’? ‘Catwoman’? ‘Green Lantern’ aka the biggest let down in a comic movie in years? I’m not saying ‘Green Lantern’ was horrible. Not at all. I’m saying the script was horrible. Ryan Reynolds and Mark Strongs performances made the movie watchable. The OA scenes were fantastic. Having Amanda Waller make an appearance? Great idea. Establish Checkmate. Please. Because Geoff Johns already said he wanted a ‘Suicide Squad’ movie. This should be the jumping off for the DC universe because you can establish Checkmate like Marvel did with Nick Fury/S.H.I.E.L.D and go from there. Will DC do this? Unlikely.

And now it’s time for the number one reason:

1. You can’t have Batman in it! Nope. You can’t!

I’m pretty sure Bale said he wouldn’t do it. And we still have NO idea how ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ ends. But even then… you throw in another actor as Batman with a background that has nothing to do with Nolans trilogy. This results in fans sitting around in a very “WTF?!” feeling. There is no way you can put Batman in here that wont either result in pissed off fans or very confused fans. And what about Superman? Will ‘Man Of Steel’ fit into a ‘Justice League’? Knowing Snyder and Nolan probably not. So lets actually take BOTH characters out. Oh wow…we’re getting the b-squad or even maybe a ‘Justice League: International”. Great. Is the average movie goer who has a kid that wear Batman tightie whities going to go see this? Eh. Maybe six days after it comes out when he has to watch the kids.

So now that i’ve come to the end I must establish that in no way am I hating on DC here. My main problem with DC has been their lack of to just establish some form of solid continuity (I mean… i’m still scared theres going to be a Flashpoint Crisis On New 52 coming) and even in their movies it is what is majorly lacking. I personally believe they should step back, take a breath and follow Marvels footsteps. Establish your characters and build a non-comic reading fanbase.

You want to push out some movies? Go after some of your dark stuff. I’d love a Swamp Thing reboot. ‘Constantine’ was great to me (Haters gon’ hate)… and there has been talk of a sequel last year. Y: The Last man? You know you want to do it.

All in all I just wish DC would just not rush things. It took us four years to get to ‘The Avengers’ and no one was mad about what it took to get us to one of the greatest comic movies of all time. Just sayin’ DC.
