My man! After many jokes at its expense, it’s finally here… an Aquaman movie! But is this the film that gets the last laugh on critics and fans? Maybe! What I do know for sure is that this is the DCEU’s weirdest movie of all time! It’s actually a lot to pick through so I bring Ian Kerner in to talk about the film’s ins and outs and what works and what doesn’t. There are tons of SPOILERS so be warned as we answer lots of questions! Does this film setup a sequel? Does it help fixed the problematic DCEU films that came before it? Were the villains too over the top? Is a ‘Flashpoint’ movie the best way to save the DCEU? There’s lots to discuss in this special episode so enjoy!

When you put a movie in and the film stars Dolph Lundgren (Expendables, Universal Soldier) and Billy Zane (Titanic, The Phantom), your expectations are likely low. With that in mind, Blood of Redemption was worth watching.

The plot is simple. Lundgren plays the bodyguard of a mob boss whose sons (played by Zane and Gianni Capaldi) mean the world to him – enough so that he wants out of the business and for the two of them to live normal lives. After his murder and the subsequent arrest of his older son, Lundgren has to figure out who killed the boss and framed his son for identity theft.

As with almost any action film, the fighting scenes were well done. The only negative would have to be the random scenes that were sped up or slowed down: it seemed almost like some of the actors were getting a bit old for the fight scenes, so the editor tried using speed changes to make it a bit more exciting. Blood of Redemption‘s soundtrack was so bad that it was almost distracting. Some of the chase scenes weren’t exactly exciting either. But that all sounds so negative: it was still a fun, guilty pleasure viewing.

Lundgren’s character narrates the film, which definitely gives a lot away. While it seemed the director wanted the audience to be surprised at some of the later revelations of the film (who orchestrated the whole thing, major characters dying just when you think they’re safe) it was a a bit predictable. And some of the ideas (and even some word-for-word lines) were obviously stolen from The Godfather.

One of the better points of the film was the sexy Jelly Howie (Reach, Compound Fracture), who played Zane’s wife and co-conspirer. She gave the movie a little of the hot edge that every action film needs.

Another bright spot was actor Vinnie Jones (Snatch, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) as the man who takes over for the family as it falls. He’s always fun to watch, and while he didn’t have many action sequences, his acting was decent enough to make him believable in the role.

Overall, I think the main reason I thought this film was fun was that you don’t watch a film like this expecting Oscar-winning performances or comical one-liners. It’s about sitting down and watching a guilty-pleasure action film. And with that in mind, Blood of Redemption delivers.

I would rate it a 3 out of 5.

Blood of Redemption is out now and available on Amazon.

Let’s start this off by saying that we should not pretend that this movie is something other than what it is: a hardcore, balls the walls action film with some light science fiction elements thrown in. That’s what the Universal Soldier films have always been. And this latest film in the series knows perfectly well what it is and brings exactly what you expect… and it brings it hard.

With Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning and the previous installment, Universal Soldier: Regeneration, director John Hyams brings new life to a franchise that many would have considered to be long dead. And he brings it back to the top of the action genre. With a few exceptions here and there, franchises aren’t often known for increasing in quality as they continue but the Universal Soldier series is among the minority that does.

With Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, Hyams delivers a satisfying hybrid of action and thriller that is constantly pushing forward at a breakneck pace. It’s also hands down one of this year’s best action movies, making some of the competition seem laughable. The original stars of the series, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren, return but are kept to mostly supporting roles this time around to allow Scott Adkins to truly shine and take center stage. It’s no secret that I am a longtime Adkins fanboy, and his work this year (including The Expendables 2) has helped him to really stand out. But don’t fret! There is enough Van Damme and Lundgren to keep longtime fans happy.

Pushing past the original concept of the series, rejuvenated dead soldiers enlisted by a covert military organization, this film finds the original “Soldiers” putting together an army of the UniSols outside of the government jurisdiction… and the government’s not liking this one bit. The film mostly follows John (Adkins) as he initially witnesses, during the opening of the movie, the murder of his wife and child at the hands of Luc Deveraux (VanDamme’s long term Universal Soldier character). And this sequence is definitely not for the faint of heart. John is put into a coma and awakens nine months later with memory lapses. He begins to follow Luc’s trail, intent on finding out the truth about who he really is and what actually happened that night. And even though everything seems set up for a simple revenge plot, John’s journey will take him on a pretty twisted and violent path.

Unlike some of the previous installments that relied heavily on big action sequences, this time around we get more of a well plotted thriller interspersed with action scenes. This is far from the mind-numbing “explosion fest” that Universal Soldier 2 (the low point in the series) ever was. And when the action does finally arrive, it’s well worth the wait. Everything builds up towards the final act and once the pieces start falling into place and the punches start being delivered you’ll be sitting on the edge of your seat resisting the urge to yell “Fuck yeah!” throughout the finale. Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning is a fresh, intense and brutal chapter in the series and if you’re a fan of action flicks, this shouldn’t be overlooked.

Grade: 4/5

Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning is available now On Demand and will hit theaters on November 30th.

Yesterday we showed you the official poster for the upcoming Universal Soldier sequel. Magnet Releasing today released a trailer to go along with it!

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning sees Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren back in their classic series roles. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think! If The Expendibles 2 showed us anything, it’s that JCVD can still move!

Day of Reckoning hits theatres on November 30th, and VOD October 25th.

Magnet Releasing has just revealed the official poster for Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning via their official FaceBook page.

The new soldier title features series veterans Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren reprising their roles as Luc Deveraux and Andrew Scott. The Plot synopsis is as follows:

John (Adkins, The Expendables 2) wakes up from a coma to discover his wife and daughter were slaughtered in a brutal home invasion. Haunted by images of the attack, he vows to kill the man responsible, Luc Deveraux (Van Damme). While John tries to piece his reality back together, things get more complicated when he is pursued by a relentless UniSol (Arlovski). As John gets closer to Deveraux and the rouge army of genetically enhanced warriors led by back-from-the-dead leader Andrew Scott (Lundgren), John discovers more about himself and begins to call into question everything he believed to be true.

Looking forward to this one? I’m sure Jon is!

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning hits theatres on November 30 and on demand October 25 (I love that Magnet does this). Check out the trailer here.

With all the build up to Expendables 2, did you honestly think I wasn’t going to review it? Pssh! From the moment it was announced, I knew it would be the only movie this summer , let alone (with exception of Django Unchained) this year, that I was going to actually be excited for. The Avengers? Not a fan of Whedon. The Dark Knight Rises? Cool, I’ll happily see it, as a fan who is invested in the franchise. The Amazing Spider-Man? Another movie that exists only so a company can retain the rights, great. Expendables 2? Oh, hell yes! I knew exactly where I am going to be all weekend long: hanging out in a movie theatre watching a bunch of old men kick each other’s asses, while explosions and terrible in-jokes go off in the background. It was my first intentional midnight showing since The Dark Knight and it did not disappoint.

It’s a movie that, like Skynet, is self-aware. It knows what it is and why you have come to see it, and cuts most of the fat (“Let’s give them their money’s worth,” Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Vilain quips to no one as he and Stallone’s Barney Ross have their final show down). Like the first film, it takes the good and bad aspects of 80s action films, puts them all into a blender, and lays everything–the explosions, the terrible dialogue, the lack of plot, the misogyny, the xenophobia–on thick. The only thing it lacks is characterization (aside of caricaturization) and plot; but if you’re going to see this movie, you probably weren’t expecting those  things anyway. Lord knows I wasn’t. In fact, when little Liam Hemsworth’s Billy the Kidd tried to give us some back story on his army days and how he got involved with Sly and company, I knew it was time to turn my brain off and just ignore any other attempt at plot or cohesiveness of story.

The rest of the movie is a ride and a half. Although the best action sequences happen at the beginning of the film, there are still some solid explosions and kicks from Jean-Claude Van Damme to make the other 70 minutes of the film worth it. In fact, I realized after the movie was over, that I would watch 104 minutes of just JCVD jump kicking Stallone in the face. What’s even better about that, however, is that you know it’s him doing it. No stunt doubles, no wires; it’s all legit from the Muscles from Brussels.

JCVD kicking back at the premiere.

The cameos in this film aren’t done as seamlessly as they are in the first film: Chuck Norris’s Booker, aka “The Lone Wolf”, comes in and out of the action with no real explanation of why (“Sometimes it’s fun to run with the pack”). Likewise Schwarzenegger and Willis are there and then they’re gone, quoting each other’s own famous lines. After their early parts in the film, they are more or less superfluous (expendable, if you will), and should just let the main team do what they have to do. They should have just served their purpose to their story and head out. While it’s fun to see them doing what they did best in the 80s and 90s, they weren’t doing it any better than Lundgren, Couture, and Crews.

You know, the actual team.

That said, there was only one thing about the movie that truly irked me (not enough to keep me away or from squealing like a fangirl at the end), and that was addition of Nan Yu’s Maggie. First, who the hell is Nan Yu? From what I could tell, she existed solely because Jet Li didn’t want to do the movie if it was filmed outside of China. Their characters are inexplicably the same. Just as Li got mocked for his size and nationality in the first one, she received similar treatment regarding her gender and nationality, as well. Michelle Rodriguez would have been a better and more proper choice (what other woman, after all, is more Expendable than her?). And with Rodriguez, we wouldn’t have likely had that awkward moment at the end where she’s like, “I don’t have to leave, you know …” to Ross, even though there was no sexual tension whatsoever. While I am fine with having a female fighter, one who doesn’t use sex as a weapon or even seem to be aware of the fact that she could do that (in fact I prefer that), her addition to the team as a pure unknown (and not even an up-and-comer or someone with a martial arts background) was just weird.

Also, if anyone should have “got” the girl, it should have been Lundgren, damnit.

I know I’m not really giving you any new information or insight on the flick. If you’re going to see Expendables 2, you already know what you’re going for. It’s not the plot, it’s not the characters; it’s the nostalgia, the explosions, and the testosterone. And it has those things in spades. If you prefer a high body count to high culture, then you’ll be satisfied. Otherwise, this flick may just be expendable.

Expendables 2 is kicking ass in theatres NOW!

So, you can never get enough Jean-Claude Van Damme movies right? Well, we are getting another Universal Solider later this year and this time around they’re throwing Scott Adkins in the mix. I really like Adkins and think he’s just waiting for his break out moment. Hopefully his role in The Expendables 2 will be that.

The film follows surviving Unisols Luc Deveraux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) and Andrew Scott (Dolph Lundgren) who must battle anarchy and build a new order ruled by Unisols without government oversight. They are weeding out the weak and constantly testing their strongest warriors in brutal, life-and-death combat. Luc has emerged operating the Unisol Church of Eventualism, a self-help organization that takes in wayward Unisols whom the government has been secretly operating as remote-controlled sleeper agents. His mission is to liberate these Unisols from the implanted memories and the lies the government has inserted in them.

Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning is set to hit theaters on November 30th.

By the power of grayskull! Deadline is reporting that Jon M. Chu, the director of the troubled and delayed GI Joe: Retaliation, is in early talks to direct Masters of The Universe. The movie is set up at Sony Pictures and would be a live-action movie based on the Mattel toy-line  He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

Escape Artists entertainment is signed on as producers and is said to have “a strong script turned in by the writing team of Alex Litvak and Mike Finch”. No other details are currently known, but I’m just hoping I get to see some Battle Cat and Orko this time around and that it’s better than 1987’s Dolph Lundgren version.

I think we all  (or at least any kid from the 80’s will) remember that version of Masters of The Universe. I’m sure some people try to forget that one still exists. I loved it as a kid but then again I was 4 years old when it came out so I didn’t know any better. I still love the movie, only now I love it for all the wrong reasons. It’s so bad that it’s good…although Frank Langella was pretty badass as Skeletor!

Frank Langella as Skeletor creeped the hell out of me as a kid!

If you are a fan of the Expendables, and really who isn’t, then Hall H is the place you want to be.

Not only is Lionsgate hosting a gigantic panel that features the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, and Randy Couture. They are giving away, to the first 250 attendees THIS poster signed by the cast!

When I heard that we wouldn’t see much blood in this movie (thanks Chuck!) I became worried. But this clip right here has calmed my doubts because there definitely is some blood getting splattered.

“The Expendables are back and this time it’s personal… Barney Ross, Lee Christmas, Yin Yang, Gunnar Jensen, Toll Road and Hale Caesar — with newest members Billy the Kid and Maggie aboard — are reunited when Mr. Church enlists the Expendables to take on a seemingly simple job. The task looks like an easy paycheck for Barney and his band of old-school mercenaries. But when things go wrong and one of their own is viciously killed, the Expendables are compelled to seek revenge in hostile territory where the odds are stacked against them. Hell-bent on payback, the crew cuts a swath of destruction through opposing forces, wreaking havoc and shutting down an unexpected threat in the nick of time – six pounds of weapons-grade plutonium; enough to change the balance of power in the world. But that’s nothing compared to the justice they serve against the villainous adversary who savagely murdered their brother. That is done the Expendables way….”

‘The Expendables 2’ hits theaters August 17th.

I’ll keep it real and admit that I am really looking forward to seeing ‘The Expendables 2’ when it hits theaters. What I am not looking forward to? The possibility of playing this game. Never happening. From the looks of it this game continues the bad history of “movie-to-game” translations when all they really needed to do was rip-off Call Of Duty.

I’m not going to search for a release date on this one because I honestly don’t think any of us will care to play it too much.

If I know one thing, it’s that the U.S. of A. is in love with two things: pro wrestling and NASCAR!

And hallelujah, brother, because this brand new official trailer for The Expendables 2 has healthy doses of bad ass dudes beating each other up and kick ass machines making a serious mess… oh, and tons of explosions!

I honestly think that this is going to be a hilariously fun time. Will it win any awards? Yeah. From bad ass tough guys. Who else matters? This trailer has it all. Arnold. Willis. Stallone. Lundgren. Norris. Cruz. Statham. Jet Li. And the Geekscape founding father himself: Jean Claude Van Damme!

Bring it on already!

Last night, Dolph Lundgren posted some new Expendables 2 posters to his Facebook fan page (and you know I’m a member of that group). I hadn’t seen these anywhere, except for the Stallone and Arnold shots, so I thought I’d make up a gallery and share with you these bad ass character posters for each actor who’s part of the most kick ass action ensemble this summer!

What, you thought it was The Avengers?!? The Avengers don’t have JCVD! That enough puts The Expendables over the top! Now check these out!

Did you love The Expendables but were still royally pissed that it didn’t have Christian Slater and Peter Weller in it? Well get ready to poop your pants, change those pants, and then poop them again.
