Hello, boys! We’re BAAAAAACK!

Fox has just released the first trailer for ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ the follow up to 1996’s massive Summer blockbuster.

This is definitely a sequel that, when announced, caused me to roll my eyes. I have to say that hearing the Bill Pullman speach over the trailer got me kinda hyped for it. Made me want to pop in my VHS copy of ID4.

Almost the whole cast is back minus the mega star of the first film, Randy Quaid. Will Smith is also not returning either. The role of action black guy will be filled by his ‘step son’ of the film Dylan (Jessie Usher).

The Aliens are back and revenge is a bitch. They have come back in bigger numbers and in bigger ships. The nations of the Earth has teamed up  for an interplanetary defence system using the technology recovered from the war of 1996. That system is about to get put to the test.

‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ invades theaters June 24, 2016

“What do you hope audiences take away from Kill Me Three Times?” I ask the burly, Australian hunk Luke Hemsworth.

“Hopefully a bit of grittiness,” he says. “Something grounded, something not fantastical.” For an absurd movie that involves assassinations and elaborate thefts, there is a grounded nature to Kriv Stender’s neo-noir riot, Kill Me Three Times.

For Luke Hemsworth, it appears gritty and real is something he seeks. Is it to stand out from his brothers, who have played Norse gods from comic books and sci-fi dystopian rebels?

“There’s an effort to differentiate,” he says. “But for me, it’s always been about the work and that I do a good job.”

The eldest of the Hemsworth brothers that have taken over Hollywood, Luke is best known for his role in the Australian soap opera Neighbours. After a string of television guest appearances, he starred in the 2012 miniseries Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms, where he portrayed Bandido badass Gregory “Shadow” Campbell.

Directed by Kriv Stenders, Kill Me Three Times is the actor’s full-length film where he plays Dylan, a seemingly simple surfer and auto mechanic with more depth to him than meets the eye. Caught in a love triangle between his lover and her abusive husband, Dylan goes to extreme measures to protect his loved ones.

I recently spoke to Luke Hemsworth about his work in the film, his relationship with his younger siblings and just how much he could relate to Dylan’s extremities.

So I know you were born and raised in Australia. What was it like shooting there? My geography sucks but was production near Melbourne?

Luke: [laughs] No, no. Completely other side of the country. So, I grew up on the east coast and Perth and Margaret River where we shot was on the west coast. And, you know, [shooting] was in very, very remote west coast. I mean, it’s a dream. It’s like sex without a condom, just a little bit better.

You previously described your character, Dylan, as not “as uncomplicated.” What was it about Dylan that spoke to you? What clicked in your head that made you say, “Dylan? Yeah. I’ll play him.”

Luke: Pretty much just getting paid. That’s a great reason. [laughs] But nah, look, you look at these characters and the wonderful part about Dylan is that he’s a wonderful kind of juxtaposition of a light shade and darkness. He’s humanity, but he’s also the bringer of death, personified. [laughs] That’s what you look for as a performer. You want the gamut of everything. You don’t want one note.

Out of everyone in the film, Dylan is among the few who is selfless. How do you feel about playing the only “hero” of the film? Despite that you try to kill someone, of course.

Luke: [laughs] It’s great! It’s great because he’s a sleeper, in terms of the last person you’d expect to come through with the goods. In a lot of ways he’s kind of a reaction as he’s trying to get going. And that shows in the way he prepares to leave.

Was it easy or hard to slip into Dylan’s shoes? Could you see yourself take the drastic measures he takes?

Luke: To protect people, yes. I think he goes to an extreme in terms of his reaction, before he understands what’s actually happened. I definitely, definitely can relate to going to that extreme to protect people you love. I’ve got three girls, three daughters, and there’s nothing that kind of makes you realizes what you would do to protect [them]. But … that’s the attractive part, for me, for acting is treading that line. “Could I do this? Would I do this? What would be my reaction to this?”

What was it like working with director Kriv Stenders and your co-stars? You worked in beautiful Australia. Any fun stories?

Luke: I loved every moment of it. Working with Simon was awesome. Fortunately we got to spend a little time outside work together, some great dinners and lunches. I really got along well with Simon and hopefully he felt the same.

I’m sure he did!

Luke: [laughs] And Kriv is great too, a wonderful human being. He’s incredibly passionate, and very honest with what he wants and wants to do, which makes it easier for all involved.

The world knows your brothers pretty well, but we’re getting to know you a little better. What is it like having family in the business? Does acting bond you guys?

Luke: To a certain degree, sure. Maybe from an outside point of view. But internally, I don’t think so at all. In fact, most of us try to get away from it whenever we’re together. It’s about spending time together and being together, and not thinking about that world. But there’s definitely points when we ask each other for advice. Me, more than anyone. [laughs]

Is having that support system helpful?

Luke: Oh yeah. I’ve got the best support system in the world. [laughs]

Do you hope for one day audiences to see you, Luke Hemsworth, as your own individual, and not as “a Hemsworth brother”?

Luke: Yeah. Sure. There’s an effort to differentiate. In a lot of ways. There are doors that open, and there are doors that close with them being who they are. But for me, it’s always been about the work and that I do a good job. That’s all I kind of try to focus on. The rest is kind of, stuff that happens.

What’s the most fun thing you had in making Kill Me Three Times?

Luke: Man, it’s really sad but the one thing that was amazing for me was getting to surf in this film, but that didn’t get in to the final edit. But we got to surf some incredible waves … That, and the scene with me and Callan Mulvey before all hell breaks loose. It’s a wonderful scene and I always loved it from start to finish, and it was a beautiful day of shooting. Intense, but incredibly rewarding. I think it was one of my favorite scenes of the movie.

Kill Me Three Times is available now on iTunes and On Demand platforms and will hit theaters on April 10, 2015.

With all the build up to Expendables 2, did you honestly think I wasn’t going to review it? Pssh! From the moment it was announced, I knew it would be the only movie this summer , let alone (with exception of Django Unchained) this year, that I was going to actually be excited for. The Avengers? Not a fan of Whedon. The Dark Knight Rises? Cool, I’ll happily see it, as a fan who is invested in the franchise. The Amazing Spider-Man? Another movie that exists only so a company can retain the rights, great. Expendables 2? Oh, hell yes! I knew exactly where I am going to be all weekend long: hanging out in a movie theatre watching a bunch of old men kick each other’s asses, while explosions and terrible in-jokes go off in the background. It was my first intentional midnight showing since The Dark Knight and it did not disappoint.

It’s a movie that, like Skynet, is self-aware. It knows what it is and why you have come to see it, and cuts most of the fat (“Let’s give them their money’s worth,” Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Vilain quips to no one as he and Stallone’s Barney Ross have their final show down). Like the first film, it takes the good and bad aspects of 80s action films, puts them all into a blender, and lays everything–the explosions, the terrible dialogue, the lack of plot, the misogyny, the xenophobia–on thick. The only thing it lacks is characterization (aside of caricaturization) and plot; but if you’re going to see this movie, you probably weren’t expecting those  things anyway. Lord knows I wasn’t. In fact, when little Liam Hemsworth’s Billy the Kidd tried to give us some back story on his army days and how he got involved with Sly and company, I knew it was time to turn my brain off and just ignore any other attempt at plot or cohesiveness of story.

The rest of the movie is a ride and a half. Although the best action sequences happen at the beginning of the film, there are still some solid explosions and kicks from Jean-Claude Van Damme to make the other 70 minutes of the film worth it. In fact, I realized after the movie was over, that I would watch 104 minutes of just JCVD jump kicking Stallone in the face. What’s even better about that, however, is that you know it’s him doing it. No stunt doubles, no wires; it’s all legit from the Muscles from Brussels.

JCVD kicking back at the premiere.

The cameos in this film aren’t done as seamlessly as they are in the first film: Chuck Norris’s Booker, aka “The Lone Wolf”, comes in and out of the action with no real explanation of why (“Sometimes it’s fun to run with the pack”). Likewise Schwarzenegger and Willis are there and then they’re gone, quoting each other’s own famous lines. After their early parts in the film, they are more or less superfluous (expendable, if you will), and should just let the main team do what they have to do. They should have just served their purpose to their story and head out. While it’s fun to see them doing what they did best in the 80s and 90s, they weren’t doing it any better than Lundgren, Couture, and Crews.

You know, the actual team.

That said, there was only one thing about the movie that truly irked me (not enough to keep me away or from squealing like a fangirl at the end), and that was addition of Nan Yu’s Maggie. First, who the hell is Nan Yu? From what I could tell, she existed solely because Jet Li didn’t want to do the movie if it was filmed outside of China. Their characters are inexplicably the same. Just as Li got mocked for his size and nationality in the first one, she received similar treatment regarding her gender and nationality, as well. Michelle Rodriguez would have been a better and more proper choice (what other woman, after all, is more Expendable than her?). And with Rodriguez, we wouldn’t have likely had that awkward moment at the end where she’s like, “I don’t have to leave, you know …” to Ross, even though there was no sexual tension whatsoever. While I am fine with having a female fighter, one who doesn’t use sex as a weapon or even seem to be aware of the fact that she could do that (in fact I prefer that), her addition to the team as a pure unknown (and not even an up-and-comer or someone with a martial arts background) was just weird.

Also, if anyone should have “got” the girl, it should have been Lundgren, damnit.

I know I’m not really giving you any new information or insight on the flick. If you’re going to see Expendables 2, you already know what you’re going for. It’s not the plot, it’s not the characters; it’s the nostalgia, the explosions, and the testosterone. And it has those things in spades. If you prefer a high body count to high culture, then you’ll be satisfied. Otherwise, this flick may just be expendable.

Expendables 2 is kicking ass in theatres NOW!

Castings news for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has slowly been rolling in for sometime now (here and here) and now it looks as if we have some more to report. The Playlist is reporting that sources close to the movie have told them that Alice in Wonderland star Mia Wasikowska and  model/actress Zoe Aggeliki are names currently being discussed to play the role of Johanna Mason.

Johanna Mason is tribute from District 7, who is sarcastic and mean-spirited. She was also a previous winner of The Hunger Games.

Mia Wasikowska is most notably known for playing Alice in Tim Burton’s god aweful re-imagining/re-make or whatever the hell it was supposed to be. Zoe Aggeliki is a name I had never heard of until hearing the casting news. She will be seen alongside Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges in R.I.P.D. as well as Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters.

Whether or not this “source’s” info proves to be true you can bet that we will find out sooner rather than later. Filming begins this fall with I am Legend director Francis Lawrence is set to direct. Stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth are set to reprise their roles.  The Quarter Quell begins in theaters  November 22, 2013.

Last week DC announced plans to move forward with a Justice League movie. With that came an announcement that they were also moving forward with ‘The Flash’, ‘Wonder Woman’, ‘Aquaman’ and ‘Suicide Squad’.

And with the recent Justice League fancast we did…I chose to do a fan-cast of my own for the DC movie that is moving forward that I am most excited for…

Suicide Squad is an anti-hero team of incarcerated supervillains who act as deniable assets for the United States government, undertaking high-risk black ops missions in exchange for commuted prison sentences. The group operates out of Belle Reve Penitentiary, currently under the command of Amanda Waller.

Now one thing about this is that i’m going to cast this movie ground in a bit of realism. I’m not going to use characters with superpowers exactly. I’m more so pursuing an ‘Expendables of the comic world’ casting here. I’ll also be focusing on more of a ‘New 52’ team versus a classic team. I know… I apologize to the Rick Flag fans.

Amanda Waller (Angela Bassett)

So first things first…we already have Waller established. No need to re-cast. This will establish some form of connection/continuity amongst the DC movies with Waller playing a Fury-like role.

Deadshot aka Floyd Lawton (Sam Worthington)

Sorry I can’t see him as Bruce Wayne myself. But I’ve been saying this one for awhile now… Worthington would play a perfect version of the moody ‘New 52’ Deadshot. Just imagine him playing the role like he played Marcus in ‘Terminator: Salvation’. Plus having his name to the film would definitely draw crowds.

Captain Boomerang aka George “Digger” Harkness (Guy Pearce)

So let’s add another fan-favorite actor to the mix here. And to top it off he’s Australian. Score.

Black Spider aka Eric Needham (Michael Jai White)

‘Suicide Squad’ definitely has to be an action movie. So we need actors who can pull off action. And to top it off he looks the part. Another perfect fit.

Harley Quinn aka Harleen Frances Quinzel (Kristen Bell)

Harley is definitely needed in a ‘Suicide Squad’ flick and we definitely need someone that can pull of that twisted evil/cute/hot/mentally unstable role and if you remember her as Elle on ‘Heroes’ I can definitely see this working.

Savant aka Brian Durlin (Liam Hemsworth)

So, Marvel had success with his brother Chris. Why can’t DC use Liam? His name alone will draw. And especially after ‘The Hunger Games’ and the upcoming ‘Expendables 2’ we know he can pull off action roles.

So, as I stated at the start of this article…i’m going after realism here. I think the concept of ‘Suicide Squad’ will work much better with realistic characters and thats why I chose the above. And I left Rick Flag out just because I think he’s kind of boring.

So, who would the Squad go toe to toe with? My pick would be personally villains who had escaped Belle Reve and Waller wants them shut down before they can open their mouths about the existence of Task Force X.

Count Vertigo (Paul Bettany)

Bettany has proven that he can do action films. But can he pull off the villain role? Id like to see.

Dr. Light (Robert Knepper)

Dr. Light is a rapist and creep. Have you ever seen Knepper on ‘Prison Break’? That combined with his role on ‘Heroes’? Perfection.

Bronze Tiger (Wesley Snipes. Yes…really.)

Yes. Wesley Snipes. Does he have the look? Check. Does he know martial arts? Check. Would he draw in crowds? Check. Do they both apparently like orange turtlenecks? Check.

Scandal Savage (Morena Baccarin)

Yes I know she’s a member of ‘Secret Six’ but I felt like mixing in another female in here for a super sexy showdown with Harley. You want to see that right? She has the look. Can she pull the role off? Not sure. But she has the look!

The above are solely my opinions. Feel free to agree or disagree in the box below.

Last night, Dolph Lundgren posted some new Expendables 2 posters to his Facebook fan page (and you know I’m a member of that group). I hadn’t seen these anywhere, except for the Stallone and Arnold shots, so I thought I’d make up a gallery and share with you these bad ass character posters for each actor who’s part of the most kick ass action ensemble this summer!

What, you thought it was The Avengers?!? The Avengers don’t have JCVD! That enough puts The Expendables over the top! Now check these out!
