Ever since the disaster that was Josh Tranks Fant4stic, the idea of a horror-based superhero movie has always intrigued people; the idea that young people are discovering their powers in horrific and painful ways could be something really interesting and fun to follow. Done wrong, however, it can come off low-budget and messy. Fox is throwing their hat in the ring for a second attempt at doing this right with The New Mutants, directed by Josh Boone (The Fault In Our Stars). If any superhero group is perfect for a horror hybrid, it’s 100% no-doubt the X-Men. The trailer starts out promisingly; a young mutant is being asked about if she’s killed or hurt anyone with her powers. Sadly, as the trailer goes on, the film starts showing its cracks, as it looks a bit low-budget, descending into bad Blumhouse film territory.

Hopefully, this was just a bad trailer, as I think the idea of a horror-superhero hybrid movie could be something wonderful. Check out the trailer below for yourself and tell us what you think about it. The New Mutants will be released on April 13th, 2018.

Assuming that you’ve seen the first two ‘Apes’ films, this review is SPOILER FREE for the third installment.
In a film landscape filled with remakes and sequels it’s interesting that a trilogy of films about apes somehow supersedes all of the super heroes, robot-machines and furious car films not only in special effects, but in sheer story-telling ability. This third film in the franchise from  writer director Matt Reeves (his second in the series) cements itself as easily the best of the three.

In this outing Caesar and his growing family have made lives for themselves in the forest. The renegade gorilla Kubo, from the second film who wanted to destroy humanity, is long gone. All is well until humans bring war to the group of apes who just want to survive and prosper in peace. Caesar walks a deadly line where he will either become like Kubo to save his family or face extinction. That moral dilemma of either becoming like your enemy or transcending to a higher place is part of what makes “Apes” tick.

“War for the Planet of the Apes” isn’t a perfect film but the flaws are few and in between. “Apes” once again stars the very impressive Andy Serkis as Caesar and a bunch of green dots that enable him to appear as an erect walking and talking chimpanzee. Weta Digital who helped develop the special effects has truly outdone themselves. Of course people generally don’t go to a film just to see the special effects but this film could make a case for exactly that. Skillfully, it doesn’t have too because the film delivers on much more than just how realistic the actors look as apes.

The story takes place fifteen years after the second, and while apes can communicate using sign language, only a few have the ability to vocalize due to the mutation that took place in the first film. Because of this plot point, an actor’s ability to be able to emote through layers of prosthetics in previous films was challenging; And while the green screen and CGI motion capture was really good, it was still obvious. The textures just weren’t there and the characters sometimes looked like animation. With the advent of even better technology though, this barrier that prevents actors coming across as real and genuine has been broken. The blur between an actor playing an ape has transcended to one that looks totally believable. While this is not the end all, be all why this film succeeds it does add a lot to the over all experience and quality of the story and film.

Adding to the film’s positive landscape is another bold and dynamic soundtrack from Michael Giachina (Rogue One, Doctor Strange) who is innately aware that a large portion of the actors are using sign language to communicate. His music takes great care to evoke emotions alongside actors who don’t get to vocalize a lot of audible language. Giachina even includes a few riffs of the original “Planet of the Apes” theme if you listen for it.

Reeves and his crew do an excellent job of creating an atmosphere of oppressiveness where the apes live in a world of rainy, cloudy environments. The color palettes are dreary and are expertly designed around characters who won’t be vocalizing. The environment and staging of the scenes go a long ways in helping to tell this story and it’s an easy bet that some nominations will be coming down later this year for the design work done on this film (besides the technical aspects which will be easily nominated as well).

There’s always going to be praise for Andy Serkis because he’s just so damn good. I almost don’t want to write about it because everyone will report on just how great he is when it comes to these kinds of roles but honestly its all true and deservedly so. It’d be nice if the Academy Awards recognized his work this year outside of something technical, and just gave him a Best Actor Nomination already, and not one he has to share with the entire cast. Outside of the challenges of performing with all the head gear and green dots, etc required by the role, Serkis has this physical ability to evoke so much with just a look in his eyes. Without Serkis, “Apes” wouldn’t be where it is today, hands down. There are plenty of big films out there with humongous stars leading the way with bigger than life talent, but many of them are interchangeable. This is so not the case when it comes to the esthetic that Serkis brings to Caesar.

The film is not perfect. Colonel, played by Woody Harrelson, is given the task of militarily leading a group of humans against Apes. It’s not Harrelson giving a lousy performance, he’s great, it’s just that the character is too overtly contrived. Yes, you need motivation for why a character will do what they do (vague to maintain spoiler free), however his underlying need for revenge is just the same old expectation you see in every film the revolves around revenge. Since Caesar is also walking that line it would have been nice to have just a bit less of you killed so and so, so now I must kill you. With that said, the plot twist near the end made up for it, and I absolutely loved the way the story ended up fitting into the original 1968 “Planet of the Apes” narrative from writers including Mark Bomback.

“War for the Planet of the Apes” stands on it’s own, stands as part of a worthy trilogy, and stands inside of the Apes mythos while never feeling like it’s stretching to do that.

All three films combined can go up against any re-imagined and or rebooted franchise films in the past twenty years and be cited as the best. That’s something to be said but when you really get down to comparing it to franchise films that rely heavily on action and go weak on character development and or story, “Apes” never forgets character development. Explosions, dramatic deaths, visceral fight scenes mean nothing if you don’t care about the characters. Reeves keeps that tightly in focus as he weaves a tale about survival of the fittest. As spectacular as the special effects are in this film, they wouldn’t mean anything if the actors didn’t have a meaningful story to perform. “War for the Planet of the Apes” is easily the best of the three in an already stellar franchise.

Final Verdict: 4 out of 5

Opening this weekend is Ridley Scott’s  sci-fi horror thriller “Alien: Covenant” from 20th Century Fox. This ones takes place ten years after “Prometheus” and deftly answers many of the questions that left “Alien” fans somewhat disenchanted.

The command crew aboard a colonization ship is suddenly awakened from hyper sleep after their ship carrying 3,000 passengers and 10,000 fertilized embryos suffers a malfunction. In the midst of making repairs a discovery is made. A planet that may be the perfect place to settle is just a mere two weeks away versus their planned destination being another four years journey.

There’s a saying… when it’s too good to be true, it probably is. Which would you pick?

In perfect “Alien” form, “Covenant” revisits a similar plot structure that is evident throughout the franchise. This one keeps those same beats; the initial hope of finding a new planet, that first attack and death, a turn coat, the imminent death of everyone who doesn’t escape back to the ship, and of course the traditional ending where you think it’s over, but it’s not. Those familiar beats made the first one work, and even though familiar they still make “Covenant” a very worthy sequel.

What sets this one apart is that it begins with a flash back. It’s Peter Weyland (Guy Pierce reprising his role) at the “birth” of his creation, David (Michael Fassbender). It becomes apparent that David’s idea of perfection and creation will exceed Weyland’s idea of godhood. This is later realized in brilliant fashion as David does some pretty twisted experiments in search of his own godhood.

When all hell starts to bust loose and the horror truly begins.

Another twist to this story is the dual role that Fassbender plays as not only the aforementioned “David” but also a less emotional “Walter” who is accompanying the colonization ship in a similar role as David in “Prometheus.” Fassbender a true talent, is able to instill a new persona in “Walter” and realize his “David” as two completely different synthetic humans but still similar. I never once felt like his performance was in any way overly contrived.

In an early scene where both David and Walter appear on the screen together, the special effects are so well executed you can’t tell that there’s digital compositing going on. The scene takes place in a wheat field during an attack and “Walter” protects a crew member from a Xenomorph and David shows up just when it looks like everyone is about to die, saving the day.

Another mesmerizing scene is when David teaches Walter how to play a flute, and then sort of seduces him. The reality of Fassbender seducing himself on camera is quite the visual treat and added a bit of light heartedness to the horror film.

As is a common theme of most horror films, the characters invariably start making bad decisions that cascade into catastrophe. The Xenomorphs are relentless and hungry, and they come in several varieties including one that looks vaguely human.

In true “Alien” fashion the only one who seems to be making good decisions and has a bit of luck is Daniels (Katherine Waterstone), a lady who has the resolve to run the right way and when invariably cornered has the wherewithal to trap the Xenomorph inside a flying tractor-like vehicle and then eject that out of the space craft (yes, just like Ripley without the cool “get away from her you bitch!” line.)

“Alien: Covenant” is the culmination of Ridley Scott’s movie making career. You can see bits and pieces of characters and styles from many of the films he’s famous for, even “Blade Runner.” This film works on many levels as a horror film first and foremost. Earlier this year Scott made an appearance at SXSW and said his goal was “to scare the shit out of you” with this film. On that front, he succeeds as well as the existential experience he creates with his story that speaks to God, creation, genocide, and even rebirth.  Every frame of this picture can be seen as a symbol. As for what those symbols mean, begs for repeated viewings to take it all in.

Captain Underpants used to and still is one of my favorite book series when I was younger.

It always seemed that in spite of some of the gross out humor, the books had likable characters, clever jokes, and even some good lessons at the end of them. Now DreamWorks has finally released a trailer for the film, and it’s looking pretty faithful and solid so far. The film seems to be borrowing from multiple books, most likely combining the first 4 books into one film. So far, the cast is a bit odd with Ed Helms as Mr. Krupp, Kevin Hart as George, and Thomas Middleditch as Harold. Check out the trailer yourself! Are you excited for this film? Tell us in the comments below.

Not to be outdone by last weeks trailer for Spider-Man Homecoming, Fox has decided to release the trailer for the latest Planet of the Apes films, War for the Planet of the Apes, and yes, these series titles are still a mouthful to write and say.

You can find the trailer below, but this trailer definitely has me wondering if this new apes series has lost a bit of steam similar to how The Hunger Games lost its momentum. The movie looks nice, but 2017 is a very crowded year for movies. Do you think this new film can survive the 2017 summer movie massacre? Are you going to see the movie? Tell us in the comments below!

Great news for Alien fans! (No, not the Roswell ones.)

Fox has just released a brand new poster for the highly anticipated horror sci-fi film, Alien Covenant. A sequel to the 2012 prequel Prometheus, which seemed to receive a lukewarm reception with most Alien fans. Originally planned to release October 6th, 2017, Fox has decided to change the films release date. . . . . . .to sooner! Yes, Alien Covenant will now be releasing  on May 19th. 5 whole months months ahead of its original release! To help fans get through the next couple of months, the studio was kind enough to release a teaser poster with a familiar friend we’ve all come to know and love. Check it out below and tell us in the comments what you think about it!

En Sabah Nur.

En Sabah Nur.

En Sabah Nur.

Praise be unto En Sabah Nur!!!

The one true GOD, Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), has come to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. He will unleash upon us his four horsemen, Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Archangel (Ben Hardy) and the disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender).

As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young inexperienced X-Men. These fools are nothing but whinny valley kids, Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan); a mall rat, Jubilee (Lana Condor); and a circus freak, Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee). They do have a bad ass speedster though, i mean have you see this guy in action? DAMNNN QUICKSILVER (Evan Peters). These losers will try and stop the one true God in a feeble attempt to save mankind from complete and utter destruction that it deserves.

Deadpool is a movie so in love with the main character, it forgot about everything else.

At last, 20th Century Fox has produced the big-budget Deadpool, an R-rated superhero movie that Marvel fans wished for. This movie shouldn’t exist, not the least of which because it features a crass cult-favorite superhero at a time when superheroes are toys at the Disney Store. And for many that’s a plus, because that’s simply who Deadpool is: He’s arrogant, gross, sarcastic, constantly breaks the fourth-wall, and revels in murder and mayhem. He’s a symbol of a lot of what comic books did wrong in the 1990s, and miraculously survived through the new millennium to keep the audience he enjoys today. If only that audience had higher standards.

I’ll count myself among that audience: I too love Deadpool and wanted this movie ever since the maligned X-Men Origins: Wolverine left me cold. X-Men Origins was an offense to a lot of filmmaking, but to fandom’s sensibilities they only care about Wade Wilson. I’m happy to report that Deadpool miraculously nails its lead character almost pitch perfect, played by a Ryan Reynolds who so clearly believes in what he’s doing. His natural comedic timing coupled with his understanding of the character really makes it feel as though Wade Wilson made the leap from the comic book page. Reynolds also served up a bonus of crowd-pleasing abdominal muscles and a Canadian geniality that are likely the sole reasons why Fox gave the project the greenlight at all — jerk superheroes live and die by their actors, and only Reynolds could have been Deadpool. If not, this movie would have stayed in production hell.

Ryan Reynolds and Morena Baccarin in 'Deadpool.' The two share great chemistry that barely overcomes the averageness of their shared journey.
Ryan Reynolds and Morena Baccarin in ‘Deadpool.’ The two share great chemistry that barely overcomes the averageness of their shared journey.

In fact, making Deadpool must have been hell. Deadpool works well on the comic book page because of his unique humor and fourth wall-breaking sensibilities, which is not easy to bring to screen. There’s a chance for it to go so wrong so badly, and maybe once or twice it actually does when a few jokes fall a few notes flat. But director Tim Miller — a first-time filmmaker, who began his career in CGI and video games, which you may notice in the opening credits — shows promise as an artist who can walk the tightrope between action and comedy. But he’s no Edgar Wright or Jackie Chan, masters of doing both within the same frame.

So where does Deadpool go wrong? Structure, for one. The film knows its audience so well, that it wastes no time introducing Reynolds in the costume killing dudes, but in doing so it compromises build-up, suspense, and worse, investment. Deadpool’s opening should have been crowd-pleasing, but instead it feels as empty and hollow as the CGI it’s made of. Deadpool sacrifices pacing and rhythm in exchange for an immediate rush, and as a result suffers. It adopts lengthy flashbacks in a structure that will feel familiar to fans of Arrow on the CW, in which current events are given exposition through relevant flashbacks. And I hate that about Arrow, and thus found it aggravating in Deadpool.

A fourth wall-breaking character would also point out the absolute cliches of its own film. Or so you’d think. Aside from a few jabs, Deadpool outright ignores Wade from X-Men Origins despite sharing continuity with the X-Men films (which are so broken anyway so it doesn’t matter). In Deadpool, Wade is a retired U.S. military operative haunted by a hefty 49 kills — humor is his defense mechanism. He’s now a mercenary, but only helps good people who deserve it (this is supposed to make sense) and falls in love with a hooker (Morena Baccarin, of Firefly and Homeland fame) at his favorite merc bar. After some great sex, Wade discovers he has terminal cancer and in his desperation turns to a promising but shady “superhuman” program. His “doctor” is Ajax, who looks nothing like his comic book version so there goes Deadpool being faithful to the source material I guess, and tortures Wade to disfigurement. Wade swears revenge, hoping Ajax will cure him before he can kill him.

TJ Miller and Gina Carano in 'Deadpool.' Carano is kept to a minimum while Miller goes all-in.
TJ Miller and Gina Carano in ‘Deadpool.’ Carano is kept to a minimum while Miller goes all-in.

For a movie bent on self-awareness, Deadpool does nothing to address some of its own cliches. Ajax is a British villain out of every Bond film, Morena Baccarin’s Vanessa is still a damsel in distress no matter how you cut it, and like every Marvel movie a big, massive structure is seen falling in the climactic fight. Wouldn’t it have been great if Deadpool — which is technically not a Marvel movie — take actual shots at the shortcomings of the MCU, which get clearer with every passing film?

Also disappointing for Deadpool is its over-reliance on a CGI superhero. Being a more martial arts-centric superhero with a violent streak, I had hoped to see something like The Raid in Deadpool, which is perfect for the character. Though the opening sequence on the highway (which is a retake of the leaked concept trailer) is quite nasty, the final fights are less bloody or noteworthy.

Less disappointing are Deadpool‘s array of side characters. TJ Miller (Silicon Valley) is on absolute fire, while the legendary Leslie Uggams, a Tony Award-winning performer, shows she is totally game for gross shit as Blind Al, Wade’s roommate after post-Ajax. Their presence is cut a little too short, and by the end you’ll realize they almost contributed nothing except some pep talk. But at least they’re vastly entertaining all the way through. Gina Carano is fine and thankfully less talky, while Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead will vary depending on one’s own familiarity with the X-Men.

Deadpool is a study in contradictions. It’s a superhero movie, but the hero is an asshole. It stars Ryan Reynolds, one of the most handsome men in the world, but his face gets shriveled like a testicle (they keep that one-liner, by the way). It’s an R-rated popcorn commercial movie, but its target audience are clearly white guys who laugh at the same bacon jokes on Reddit. It’s a movie that wants to satirize superhero cliches, but falls victim to its own (remember Yinsen in Iron Man, Tony Stark’s prison mate who dies and inspires him? Deadpool has a Yinsen too).

Ultimately, Deadpool is a dream come true, but maybe we should have asked for more.

GRADE: 3.5/5

Hello, boys! We’re BAAAAAACK!

Fox has just released the first trailer for ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ the follow up to 1996’s massive Summer blockbuster.

This is definitely a sequel that, when announced, caused me to roll my eyes. I have to say that hearing the Bill Pullman speach over the trailer got me kinda hyped for it. Made me want to pop in my VHS copy of ID4.

Almost the whole cast is back minus the mega star of the first film, Randy Quaid. Will Smith is also not returning either. The role of action black guy will be filled by his ‘step son’ of the film Dylan (Jessie Usher).

The Aliens are back and revenge is a bitch. They have come back in bigger numbers and in bigger ships. The nations of the Earth has teamed up  for an interplanetary defence system using the technology recovered from the war of 1996. That system is about to get put to the test.

‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ invades theaters June 24, 2016

Briefly: The official synopsis for X-Men: Apocalypse has finally been revealed.

By M&M’s.

Yep. The candy revealed a partnership with 20th Century Fox today, which officially began with the debut of this synopsis, and a ‘cute’ photo of M&M’s dressed like Storm and Magneto.

In any case, here are the goods:

Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, opening in theaters everywhere May 27, 2016.

Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible.

Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

And the actual goods:

Mars Incorporated - X-Men Apocalypse

In any case, what do you think of the synopsis? Do you like what we’ve seen of Apocalypse thus far? Or are you still trying to get passed the Ivan Ooze comparisons?

Director Rupert Wyatt is folding his cards and passing on directing ‘Gambit’. In a statement by Rupert, he notes that it has to do with conflicting schedules after the movie was delayed.

Its seems like this project keeps getting dealt a bad hand. Recently rumors were of Channing Tatum leaving the film, but he doubled down and stayed. I’m sure Fox was hoping Rupert could use some of his kinetic energy from his time on Rise of the Planets of the Apes to make Gambit a success as well.

With Hugh Jackman soon retiring Wolverine‘s claws, and Fantastic Four going nowhere fast, Fox will likely want to build another franchise around a character. They seem so dead set on Gambit, but I just don’t think he’s that great of a character. I never had an affinity towards the rain cajin, but I guess time will tell if they can change my mind.

Now that Wyatt’s gone, who would you like to see take on Gambit?

Wyatt

It’s been reported that Woody Harrelson has been cast as one of the leading human roles in Fox’s upcoming War of the Planet of the Apes. It’s still early on, so plot details are still unknown, but Harrelson will be playing a character called the Colonel (pretty original, huh?).

It’s still unclear what actors will be returning to the new movie, which will continue the story of Caesar, the evolved ape who is brought to life via motion capture by Andy Serkis. Matt Reeves, who directed 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, has returned to helm War, with Mark Bomback also back as screenwriter.

Are you down with the casting? Anyone else you’d rather see as villain? War of the Planet of the Apes hits theatres on July 14th, 2017!

Battle+Apes+3

20th Century Fox has released a new poster for ‘The Martian’. The poster features Matt Damon as Astronaut Mark Watney peering into your soul with his dreamy big blue eyes and his “I’m fucked” face.

New+Poster+The+Martian

I just recently read Andy Weir’s The Martian and it was easily the best book I’ve read in some time. It’s a quick read and would suggest anyone to give it a shot before the movie comes out. When the cast was announced I started to compare the actors to the books characters and based on the trailers, Matt Damon perfectly embodies the Mark Watney character. Personally, the performance I’m most looking forward to is Kristin Wiig’s take on the foul mouthed firecracker Annie Montrose.

And in case you missed it, here is the most recent trailer that was released a week ago.

‘The Martian’ invades theaters October 2, 2015.

Coming from Deadline is a rumor concerning Léa Seydoux, the new “Bond” girl set to star in this year’s Spectre. Apparently she’s been offered a major female role, that of Bella Donna Bourdeux, in the Channing Tatum-led Gambit.

Bella Donna and Gambit were like a reverse Romeo and Juliet. Childhood friends despite their families of thieves being on the opposing sides of a grudge. A marriage was brokered between the two kids in an effort to unite the families (for… reasons?) until Bella Donna’s brother challenges Gambit to a fight to the death and gets his ass womped. Gambit wins, and leaves New Orleans and Bella Donna.

As for Léa, you’ve seen her rock in Inglorious BasterdsBlue is the Warmest ColorMidnight in Paris …okay fine, you didn’t see those, you uncultured swine. But you did see her in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. She was kicked down the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. I watched the movie on a flight to Paris. It wasn’t helping.

The first trailer for 20th Century Fox’s ‘Victor Frankenstein’, starring James McAvoy in the lead role as Victor Frankenstein and Daniel Radcliffe as his protege Igor, is alive! The trailer seems to focus more on the origins of the relationship between Victor Frankenstein and Igor and the lead up to finally being able to resurrect a human body. Regardless, it looks like its going to be a fun movie.

Paul McGuigan (Lucky Number SlevinPush) directed the film from a script by Max Landis (ChronicleAmerican Ultra), both whose previous work I enjoyed.

James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe star in a dynamic and thrilling twist on a legendary tale. Radical scientist Victor Frankenstein (McAvoy) and his equally brilliant protégé Igor Strausman (Radcliffe) share a noble vision of aiding humanity through their groundbreaking research into immortality. But Victor’s experiments go too far, and his obsession has horrifying consequences. Only Igor can bring his friend back from the brink of madness and save him from his monstrous creation.

Frankenstein comes to life on November 25, 2015.

Briefly: Everyone on planet Earth already knows that Fox’s newly released Fantastic Four reboot is dismal (both in quality, and its box office performance).

Conan found it fairly surprising that the movie didn’t do better. To make viewers understand where he was coming from, he showed off a couple of new clips from the film, showcasing the movie’s incredible special effects, as well as the actors fantastic emotional range.

It’s a great watch, and might just help change your tune on Fantastic Four.

Take a look at the video below, and let us know what you thought of the film! If you’re looking for more Fantastic Four discussion, you should probably check out this week’s episode of Geekscape.

Briefly: Well this is interesting.

Fox’s new Fantastic Four film has received nothing but hate since it was announced. Now that the film has finally released, it appears as though all of the negativity (or at least most of it) was warranted (listen to our thoughts on the film via the newest episode of Geekscape), and fans, moviegoers, and keyboard cowboys everywhere have already decided that this new films abhorrent reception and box office performance means that the rights are definitely headed back to Marvel.

Well, apparently not.

The studios chief of domestic distribution, Chris Aronson said the following to THR earlier today regarding the film’s performance, as well as the franchise’ future:

While we’re disappointed, we remain committed to these characters and we have a lot to look forward to in our Marvel universe.

Our Marvel universe. Sure sounds like they’re not ready to give up the ghost just yet, doesn’t it? Constantin Film also has until 2023 to release another Fantastic Four film before rights would revert back to Marvel, so I’m sure we’ll be seeing something from the IP in the coming years.

Have you seen Fantastic Four yet? What did you think? What do you hope happens to the franchise next? Sound out below!

Holy crap!

What?

Sorry, I mean—holy $#!%!

Did you eat my sacred burrito? I was saving that for an emergency.

What kind of emergency?—your trainwreck face?

Or in case I get stuck in an elevator with the Kardashians.

This is pretty much exactly what you would expect from ‘Deadpool’; 4th wall-breaking commentary about the star and previous incarnation of ‘Deadpool‘ and the studio that let it happen.

I’m pretty stoked for this movie. ‘Deadpool’ is a fan favorite of the Marvel Comics Universe for his sheer craziness and his Rated R adventures. The full trailer will debut tomorrow!

Deadpool | Trailer Trailer : Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano, Brianna Hildebrand

Deadpool’ is set to hit theaters on Feb. 12, 2016.

Tatum is still a mutant!

Earlier this week it was reported that Magic Mike and Jump Street star Channing Tatum hit a rough spot in his negotiations with 20th Century Fox over Gambit, a spin-off of their X-Men franchise. If you were super into the idea of Tatum and his abs being the Cajun card dealer, you can rest easy. He’s going forward as Gambit.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tatum and the studio have reached an agreement and Gambit continues. Somewhere, Taylor Kitsch is feeling pretty bummed.

Sources say that Tatum and the studio did hit a sensitive spot in negotiations, but such back-and-forth is a normal part of top-level talent dealmaking. The Magic Mike star’s participation hardly was in any real danger because the actor already had invested quite a bit in the superhero part. Tatum has been attached to the movie (loosely then officially) as both actor and producer for a few years and even made a surprise appearance at Fox’s X-Men panel at Comic-Con in July.

Now that’s out of the way, can we dwell on the fact that there’s going to be an official, stand-alone Gambit movie? Like, that is where I want to focus on, because of all the X-Men… GambitReally?

I thought Gambit was his dream role. What the hell?

TheWrap is reporting that Gambit, a spin-off of Fox’s X-Men series slated for release on Oct. 7, 2016 may have lost Channing Tatum. His reps are still in “active discussion,” but TheWrap hints that Tatum is feeling there are “greater ambitions” beyond the superhero.

Much ado was made about Tatum’s passion for the character. Portraying the card-dealing, staff-wielding mutant had been a dream for the Magic Mike star, and he was at Comic-Con this year promoting the hell out of it. I’m not sure what has changed since for him, but perhaps he’s taking his transition behind the camera — another ambition of his — a lot sooner than he planned. But couldn’t he have done that with the clout he had in getting Gambit greenlit?

It’s worth noting that Tatum is tapped to reprise his Jump Street role for 23 Jump Street, also due next year. Gambit is being directed by Rupert Wyatt.

This weeks Entertainment Weekly is featuring X-Men: Apocalypse. On the cover we have Psylocke, Magneto, and Apocalypse and set photos of some of the cast.

We also get a  first look at new comers Psylocke (Olivia Munn) and Punk Rock Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan). The returning mutants are Magneto with a new look (Michael Fassbender), Professor X (James McAvoy), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), and Quicksilver (Evan Peters) who also is sporting an official outfit. No pics of Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) though, he was probably the only thing I enjoyed about X2.

While we haven’t seen everyone in official  outfits, Storm and Psylocke seem to stick close to the the 80’s sexy outfits. I have already seen some grumblings regarding the look of Apocalypse. In one of the photos he is resembling Ivan Ooze from the Power Rangers Movie. At this point It’s really hard to judge the costumes until we see it on the big screen and in action so I’ll reserve judgement.

20th Century Fox has released the last trailer for their upcoming film, Fantastic Four, due out on August 7, 2015.

The last trailer gives us a couple of new scenes including a clip of just how smart Reed Richards was as a kid when his experiment blacks out his whole neighborhood. What a rascal.

The films stars Miles Teller as Reed Richards, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm, Kate Mara as Sue Storm, Jamie Bell as ol’ blue eyes The Thing , and Toby Kebbell as Doctor Doom.

Are you looking forward to the film? What did you think of this final trailer? Sound out below!

Ryan Reynolds appeared on Extra to discuss the upcoming Deadpool movie and its PG-13 rating. It’s a startling interview, and the actor — a staunch supporter of the character to be as “R”-rated as possible — opens up about his change of heart. But he does express his disappointment, as well as the fans’ negative reactions about the direction the film will be going in.

Deadpool is still set for release next year.

I’m not sure how Hugh Jackman feels about his Wolverine role anymore. On numerous occasions I’ve heard him rave about how he could do something like forty more movies as the Canadian beast, and other times I hear he’s ready to quit. I don’t fault Jackman for finding the role tiresome as an actor; beyond needing to be so physically ripped, it can get boring for anybody playing the same dude for over twelve or thirteen years. But he’s so natural as Logan too, it’s kind of a bummer that there will inevitably be a time when the Wolverine we see on screen isn’t Hugh Jackman.

But are we closer to that day than we realize? Hugh Jackman posted on his Instagram today this oddly cryptic-but-blatant photo.

Maybe I’m so out of the loop but is Wolverine 3 even in production right now? The status of that movie hasn’t been my priority so I kind of glaze over any news bits that finds their way online, which is a shining example of responsible journalism.

Coming straight from the man himself, this should put to rest any rumors about Jackman’s further involvement in the X-Men series until we hear otherwise.

What do you guys think?

Hey guys, Zack here! I decided to do some writing this Con so I am here to tell you all about the 20th Century Fox Panel. On Friday, Hall H had no line, so I was able to get right in to this particular panel. Which in my oppinion, was a total sleeper hit. All of the movies are ones that we know about already. There wasn’t any lame/headscratching King Kong remakes to be had here. Just kick ass footage. The panel started with an introduction from moderator Ralph Garman.

The Maze Runner

The first clip opens with the booming sound of gears clanking and whirling. The image of a stream of light can be seen. We then realize that we are on a lift being pulled up. Thomas (Dylan O Brien) lunges up into frame, gagging and wheezing. He realizes he is in a lift shooting upwards. As he gets to the top, light can be seen, the music intensifies and so did my pulse. This was an amazing way to open and we get a chance to witness this jarring moment with our protagonist as he ends up in this giant field called The Glade with a bunch of kids called Runners. My wife read these Maze Runner books by James Dashner last year. She says the Maze Runner is the best of all of them even though they are typical “YA books”. This opening scene really had me going guys. They showed a trailer and another clip but I was already sold. Director Wes Ball also showed some concept art for a future film in the franchise if it takes off. I really hope it does. The cast was comprised of mostly young actors I didnt know. Except for Kaya Scodelario (Effie from the BBC show Skins). Here’s the trailer:

The Book of Life

Let it be known, I have been excited about this film since the first trailer debuted earlier this year. I love anything Guillermo Del Toro produces in any capacity. So the fact that he speaks so highly of this film, actually means something. He isn’t like your typical exec producer who says “This movie is great” and runs away with a bag of money like a thief in the night. Every word that comes from Guillermo drips with love and a sort of fan boy nature that is addicting.

My personal hero.
My personal hero.

Garman glowingly introduced the panel to a ravenous Hall H. Director Jorge Gutierrez, producer Guillermo del Toro, Christina Applegate, Ron Pearlman and Channing Tatum. The panel had a few things to say about the making of the film before we were treated to some amazing footage.

Everyone loves this dude. Probably because he's super charming/hillarious
Everyone loves this dude. Probably because he’s super charming/hillarious

The first clip focuses on Manollo (Diego Luna) our mariachi protagonist. He stands in the middle of a bullfighting ring with his guitar. The music he plays is something beautiful and melancholy. He then proceeds to serenade his love Maria (Zoe Saldana) with the song Creep by Radiohead. This clip is so gut-wrenching and sweet at the same time that I literally had chills. They next showed a new trailer showing some new footage. All of it looked breathtaking.

After the footage was shown, director Jorge Gutierez said that being from Tijuana, popular music in America found it’s way down to him and he embraced it openly. As those words left his mouth, a music contributor to the film came out on the stage. And this contributor was none other than Biz mother flippin Markie. He was met with immediate cheers from Hall H as he belted out “Just a Friend” with the help of Channing Tatum. A moment that will forever be in my mind.  Forever for it’s pure awesome-ness.  After that, Ralph Garman opened up questions to the floor.

There were two standout moments from the Q&A portion of this presentation. The first was from a teenager who asked a question to Channing how it feels to be in a role that isn’t for his good looks or muscles. The second was Jorge’s answer regarding why he wanted to make a movie about Dia De Los Muertos. He responded by saying Day of the Dead has always been his favorite holiday. He even got married on Dia de Los Muertos because his best friend had passed away and he wanted him to still be his best man. That literally made me cry. I am tearing up as I’m writing this. Jorge seems like an exteremely passionate filmmaker and it shows in all the loving details of this film. No wonder Guillermo loves him so much.

Agent 47

After The Book of Life, we were treated to the trailer debut of the new Hitman film staring Rupert Friend (Homeland). Rupert was away shooting that film and wasn’t able to make it but he did manage to send a nice little recorded message. The footage opens with Agent 47 in an interrogation room. A man stands on the otherside of the table with a loaded sniper rifle pointed right at our Agent. 47 explains how he’s basically totally ok with this scenario. He then kicks the table up which pulls the guns trigger and he in a bad ass slo mo kind of way uses the bullet to shoot off his hand cuffs. We then cut to beautiful locations like Singapore and Berlin. A large scale car chase goes down. S.W.A.T. team looking guys all in black harpoon Agent 47’s car from all directions and zip line in as he starts to take them out one by one. This was probably my favorite scene from the trailer. There was a lot of kick ass stuff and Zachary Quinto so you can sign me up for this one. Also, bravo to the filmmakers of this one for having the balls to shoot in such beautiful lush places that normally don’t get play on film.  Once Agent 47 was over, “Lets Be Cops” took the stage.

Lets Be Cops

This movie looks hilarious. The panel had Rob Rigel, Keegan-Michael Key, Nina Dobrev, and Daman Wayans Jr. Jake Johnson wasn’t able to make it due to shooting Jurassic World, but he had filmed a hilarious video for Hall H. The footage was mostly stuff you’ve seen in the trailer with a few extra curse words. However, it was all brilliant comedy. They also showed a scene of Wayans Jr. and Johnson’s fake cops meeting the valiant straight laced cop played by Rigel. In the clip, they respond to a break in at an Ace Hardware. The fake cops have fake guns and they even make fake gun cocking noises as they are next to their actual cop brethren. I don’t want to give the rest of the scene away, but lets just say it involves a large naked human. That’s all. It was refreshing to see Rigel play a non douche bag character, as he’s such a charismatic actor and I love that he is finally playing against type. Suffice it to say, I am seeing this movie opening day. It looks like it has a great blend of action and comedy.

Kingsman: The Secret Service

This panel was moderated by Mark Millar (why did we have to lose Garman?) He opened with how special Hall H to him because of how popular Kick-Ass became after it debuted there years ago. He explained how director Matthew Vaughn was in the hospital and couldn’t make it, but Vaughn recorded a special message for the audience. It opened with Vaughn in a Kick-Ass mask talking about how special it is that his new movie is in Hall H and that he got the chance to work with one of his heroes. The particular hero he was referring to was actually standing right next to him as the camera panned over to show Mark Hamill in a Hit Girl wig. Hamill had his Jedi beard going and mentioned that he had it for a “little space opera art house film you’ve never heard of”. Once they were done introducing the film, we were introduced to the world of the Kingsman.

I'd like to introduce to you my man crush, Colin Firth.
I’d like to introduce to you my man crush, Colin Firth.

The opening scene takes place in a snowy mountaintop cabin inhabited by several armed guards and a man tied to a chair. It’s revealed that this man is Mark Hamill, playing basically a Brittish doctor of some kind in his Joker voice (better than it sounds). As these dudes are interogating Hamill, they are interupted by a knock at the door. Then we are treated to a bevy of awesome gun fights and fisticuffs as the knock at the door belongs to a secret agent (very James Bond esque). This guy manages to kill every one and is about to untie Hamill when another knock at the door can be heard. The secret agent goes towards the door and is sliced in half by a girl with sword legs (completely crazy). She hastily covers up all of the dead bodies and opens the door for Sam F’in Jackson. If you’ve seen any of the trailers for this film, you know Jackson was a strange lisp thing going on. I feel like it really works well in this scene so I am excited to see how it works in the film.

We also got another scene of Colin Firth and his protege talking in a pub. They are rudely interupted by some hooligan dudes who Colin Firth kicks the shit out of using only his hands and a very tactical umbrella. I really want you to see the movie so I won’t spoil exactly how this marvelous fight goes. I will say that some of the music cues were super cheesy. I hope it’s just temp score because it takes away from the performances.

The thing I loved about the footage is that this is an old school kind of spy movie. Like a bat shit crazy Connery James Bond with some Brittish Avengers in there for good measure. If you have enjoyed any other Vaughn’s other films, I’m sure this one won’t dissapoint.

Sure this wasn’t a Saturday Hall H panel with all sorts of surprises. It was just a really amazing panel full of great moments. No punches were pulled during this one folks. If I were you, I would be on the look out for all of these films.

So what do you think? Are you excited for any of these ones?

Just in case you haven’t heard, Dragon Ball Z is back in a big way, thanks to its first movie in over a decade, Dragon Ball Z: Battle Of Gods. A few months back, the people at Funimation announced that the dubbed version of the film would be getting a limited theatrical run so that Z fans across the country can experience it with the big screen treatment.

We were on the red carpet of the film’s premiere in Downtown Los Angeles, and got to see all of the stars hit the scene moments before the first official screening of Funimation’s dub. Featuring voice actors Kyle Hebert, Christopher Sabat, Sean Schemmel and Mike McFarlane amongst so many others, the event definitely had that big time feel… Aside from the gift bags full of iPads. Those were oddly missing.

And in case you were wondering, the movie was amazing, thanks to some brilliant voice acting, especially in a certain scene featuring Vegeta. As our review of the film stated, Battle of Gods is much more than an hour long fight, bringing tons of humor and cameos that in my opinion, not only celebrate DBZ, but the entirety of the Dragon Ball franchise. Not bad considering series creator, Akira Toriyama, was directly involved with the development of the film.

Check out our photos from the red carpet event below, and don’t forget to check the film’s website for a growing list of theaters that will be screening the movie. Dragon Ball Z: Battle Of Gods will run on August 5th, 6th, 7th and 9th.

Briefly: Magic: The Gathering is getting a film adaption.

Yep, you read that right.

20th Century Fox has acquired the rights to the property, with which they plan to launch a “massive franchise on the scale of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings.” Simon Kinberg is set to produce, develop, and oversee the series alongside Magic: The Gathering owner Hasbro.

As a big Magic: The Gathering fan and collector (and sometimes, but not lately, player), here’s how I see things going: MtG has a cool (and huge) overarching story that will all but be ignored in the film (aside from Planeswalkers, and well, the magic part). Current MtG fans end up disliking it, but they will love the influx of new players that the insanely popular film turns onto the game.

Or maybe (hopefully) I’m wrong, and it’ll be awesome.

No other information has been revealed at this time, but we’ll be sure to share any further developments. Are you a Magic: The Gathering player? What do you think of the announcement? Sound out below!

The Wolverine premiered in July 2013 to solid reviews and a strong box office, and just in time for the holidays, is being released to blu-ray (Dec. 3rd) and digital HD (available now). The DVD contains an unrated, director’s cut version of the film that is being referred to as The Wolverine Unleashed.

Hugh Jackman in The Wolverine.

The extended version does away with the PG13 rating (and the pesky MPAA regulations that go along with it), adding some more gore, some f-bombs (for a total of three) and a subtle darkening of the Wolverine’s character. As the Wolverine has always been one of Marvel’s darker characters this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

The film’s plot remains mostly unchanged from the cinematic release, which is a new take on the story line from the 1982 limited series by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller. The blu-ray will ship out with an alternate ending (maybe we’ll actually see Wolverine in his trademark blue & gold?), a documentary film titled Path of the Ronin, a set tour and an audio commentary in edition to the extended cut of the film.

Hugh Jackman as the Wolverine and Rila Fukushima as Yukio in The Wolverine.
Hugh Jackman as the Wolverine and Rila Fukushima as Yukio in The Wolverine.

The Wolverine breaks the Marvel/Comic-book hero/tent-pole movie mold by not being about saving the world, or the universe, or even the galaxy. At its heart, the film is about discovering ones self and one’s place in the world–offset by scenes of heart-pumping, metal-clashing, arrow-flying and knife-throwing action. While some leaps in relationships and motivations are somewhat….convenient, The Wolverine offers up a conflicted hero, strong women not needing to be rescued (at least not all the time) and a satisfyingly heroic story. The ending is still somewhat problematic (though the extended version offers up some much more thrilling fight sequences in the end that should leave Wolverine fans cheering) but since Mangold and Jackman are both in talks for a sequel, hopefully that will be resolved in the next edition.

The Wolverine is available on Digital HD now from the official website, and will be out on Blu-ray on December 3rd. It stars Hugh Jackman as the Wolverine, Tao Okamoto as Mariko Yashida, Rila Fukushima as Yukio and Hiroyuki Sanada as Shingen Yashida, and was directed by James Mangold.

Geeskscape Score: 4/5
