Captain Underpants used to and still is one of my favorite book series when I was younger.

It always seemed that in spite of some of the gross out humor, the books had likable characters, clever jokes, and even some good lessons at the end of them. Now DreamWorks has finally released a trailer for the film, and it’s looking pretty faithful and solid so far. The film seems to be borrowing from multiple books, most likely combining the first 4 books into one film. So far, the cast is a bit odd with Ed Helms as Mr. Krupp, Kevin Hart as George, and Thomas Middleditch as Harold. Check out the trailer yourself! Are you excited for this film? Ever since NBCUniversal’s acquisition of Dreamworks Animation back in April, the parent company hasn’t done much to change the animation company’s line-up that much, until now.

According to Variety, Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley met with the studio last week to pull the plug on the highly anticipated project The Croods 2. Originally aiming for a release in 2018, The Croods 2 would have been a follow up to 2013’s animation hit The Croods. The film was directed by Chris Sanders (same director of Lilo & Stitch, and How to Train Your Dragon) and centered around a caveman family traversing a new land after their home get’s destroyed. Nicolas Cage was also the star, and that alone makes the movie a 10/10.

What are your thoughts on the cancellation of the film? What’s your favorite Dreamworks Animation film? Tell us in the comments below!

With its June 10 release date approaching, the Netflix Original TV show Voltron: Legendary Defender has released another trailer. This time, the trailer is exclusive to IGN and can be found here.  The video gives fans a taste of what to expect in terms of action  and combat scenes. I know was certainly impressed. Shifting camera angles, blends of CG and traditional art, and smooth animation all left me hopeful. Interestingly enough, additional videos and images can be found on the official Voltron Facebook page.

This show is shaping up to be a must-see on my list. Will you be watching when it debuts on Netflix June 10?

We got our first trailer for the new Netflix Original Series ‘Voltron Legendary Defender’. The trailer which seems to cover the one hour origin story definitely focuses on the lightheartedness and humor, reminds me of the Thundercats reboot.

Voltron force

For now I will reserve judgment since the show is co-produced Joaquim dos Santos who was also a co-producer of The Last Airbender Series ‘Legend of Korra’, which is known for founding that perfect balance of being goofy and serious throughout the series.

Voltron Lions

The Netflix original series DreamWorks ‘Voltron Legendary Defender’ reimagines one of the most popular fan-favorite shows of all time in this all-new comedic action-packed show from executive producer Joaquim Dos Santos (The Legend of Korra, Avatar: The Last Airbender) and co-executive producer Lauren Montgomery (The Legend of Korra). Five unsuspecting teenagers, transported from Earth into the middle of a sprawling intergalactic war, become pilots for five robotic lions in the battle to protect the universe from evil. Only through the true power of teamwork can they unite to form the mighty warrior known as Voltron.

DreamWorks Voltron Legendary Defender debuts on Netflix June 10, with a special hour-long origin story called “The Rise of Voltron,” followed by 10 episodes.

Briefly: After debuting the series’ official logo just last month, Netflix and Dreamworks have officially debuted the first trailer for the upcoming Voltron: Legendary Defender.

Formed by five robotic lions, the mighty warrior known as Voltron returns after 10,000 years to protect the universe from evil. This time around, Voltron is “the last line of defense for Arus and other planets against an evil alien force led by King Zarkon.”

I’ve never been a huge Voltron guy (not because it never interested me, I simply never got around to it), but I’ll gladly watch anything with the Netflix stamp of approval on it, so I’m definitely looking forward to this experience.

Take a look at the trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you think! Voltron: Legendary Defender hits Netflix on June 10th!

Briefly: We still don’t know much of anything about the title, but Netflix and Dreamworks have just revealed the official title and poster for Voltron: Legendary Defender.

The series is expected to release in 2016, as is the Guillermo Del Toro series Trollhunters that was announced via the same partnership.

I’ve never been a huge Voltron guy (not because it never interested me, I simply never got around to it), but I’ll gladly watch anything with the Netflix stamp of approval on it, so I’m definitely looking forward to this experience.

Take a look at the image below, and be sure to let us know what you’d like to see in the reboot!

Fans of the How to Train Your Dragon films and the subsequent series will be excited to learn that there is a brand new 13 episode show, Dragons: Race to the Edge, coming to Netflix June 26th! At WonderCon, Art Brown and Doug Sloan, executive producers of Dragons: Race to the Edge, were special guests at the Sunday-morning panel DreamWorks: Dragons, Dinos & More. Attendees were treated to a special first look at the series which looked awesome! The series takes place a year and a half before the second film and fills us in on what happened during the gap in time between the two films. Sloan told the audience that there will be “tons of new dragons”. In one of the clips, Hiccup finds a mysterious ship where he discovers the Dragon’s Eye which “is a game-changer, both for Hiccup and for all of the Dragon Riders,” Brown said.

After the panel, I was able to speak with Art Brown and Doug Sloan. Read on to learn what it is like making an animated show for Netflix, what kind of dragon they would choose, how they got involved with the dragon world and more!

Q: With the current success of live action shows on Netflix, what is it like doing an animated show? Is it any different for Netflix versus regular television?

Art Brown: I think it is exciting for Netflix. They’re constantly breaking new ground. I think that is one of the cool things about them and there is potential for our show and big international shows to have some effect internationally. So, I think those two things combined are pretty cool.

Doug Sloan: I think our show hopefully will span a wide demographic. They’ll be able to show it – adults will watch it, kids will watch it, and I don’t know if they expect that, but we are hoping that that’s what happens. I think that will be great, but it’s going to be awesome.

Brown: You have the kids that were the fans of the first movie who have grown up and you’ve got the next group who have watched the show and you have the new ones coming in, so it has potential to be pretty wide.

Sloan: Yeah. It’ll be cool and Netflix is really good about letting us do the show. They don’t… they are not as hands on as normal networks, so they know that we know what we are doing. They know that we know how to do it, so they pretty much let us do what we do and it works out great.

Brown: Yeah.

Q: What kind of dragon would you like to have?

Sloan: Oh my gosh. Wow! That has never been asked to us.

Brown: Yeah.

Sloan: That’s awesome.

Brown: Right!… You know I think the relationship of Toothless, obviously. I think the sense of humor of Hookfang…

Sloan: Yeah.

Brown: You know Hookfang loves to mess with Snotlout. I mean, I enjoy that…

Sloan: Toothless is, for me, if I really were to have a dragon, I think I would probably want a real huge one that I wasn’t going to fall off of because Toothless seems like he would be a little small for me. I’d probably fall off. He does some crazy stuff which I am not that into.

Brown: Right. He might be better for me.

Sloan: He might be better for you, yeah. I think a big… like a Hookfang or something like that…

Brown: A Monstrous Nightmare

Sloan: Something where I have a lot of room…

Brown: Like a Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare…

Sloan: Yeah, there you go. Now we’re talking. Absolutely.

(both laugh)

Q: How did you get involved with this dragon world?

Brown: We had just done a movie for Nickelodeon and got approached when they were initially doing the first couple of seasons of the show. We hadn’t even seen the movie. Our representation sent it to us and we watched it at his house and we were like “Oh my God!”

Sloan: It blew us away. We were like, “You’ve got to be kidding, this is brilliant!” We really really wanted to work on the show. We didn’t care in what capacity – writing, producing, show running, whatever. So, we started off on the show as writers, just writers, and, as time went on, we ended up running the show, but we would not have taken that job, I don’t think, had it not been for how great the first movie was. We probably would have said “Nah, it’s not…”

Brown: And for a couple execs at Dreamworks who we really enjoy working with – Gregg Taylor, Ann Daly, and people like that who we really… It was a combination. We loved the movie and wanted to be involved with it and we love the people there, so we…

Sloan: And when you get a chance to work with Jeffrey Katzenberg, I mean you take it.

Brown: Yeah.

Sloan: This property is so important to them that he does peek in every once in a while and to learn from him and Ann and those guys is… I mean, when do you get that chance? It’s amazing.

Brown: Yeah, you don’t get a lot of chances to work on great great shows, shows that are both huge hits and quality, so you kind of go “I want to stick around for awhile.”

Sloan: Yeah! Yeah, you’ll have to drag me out kicking and screaming.

Brown: Drag you out?

Sloan: Dragon…

Both: Ooooh… (laughing)

Sloan: Bad. Really bad, I’m so sorry.

Brown: It’s late in the day.

Sloan: Yeah, it is.

Q: Yeah, I think the clips that you showed and the teaser trailer look really good because it often happens, I feel, when you go from a movie to a show or movie to sequels, the secondary product just doesn’t look right. The colors are wrong. Something is off.

Sloan: Yeah, it’s just that to make a movie costs an enormous amount of money – animated movie or live action – and we make our TV shows for what half a minute of a movie costs so it really really does take all of our thinking and planning and all of that to make the show look good, but our goal is to make it look somewhat close to the movie.

Brown: And we’re able to… these seasons, we were able to… You know, we are lighting it differently. The first two we had to just sort of do what we could afford and it is more dynamic, more filmic now.

Sloan: People think we spend millions and millions of dollars on the show and that is absolutely not the case. I mean, we are the same as any other show, it is just the people who work on our show are really smart and they really have figured out ways to make our show look brilliant without breaking the…

Brown: And they care!

Sloan: Yeah, the really do care which is good. Caring is sharing… Or, sharing is caring. One of those two.

Brown: One of the two.

Q: I definitely think you can tell when creators and people involved with the project actually love the material versus when they are just trying to turn out something to make money.

Sloan: If you go through our office, every single desk is decorated with dragon stuff. There are little dragon toys on all the desks and everybody has a picture of a dragon and they just love the show which is awesome.

Q: Anything else that you would like to tell the fans?

Sloan: Just thank you for watching and thank you for being so into the show. We really… we make the show for them, we make the show to take them on a ride, to make them happy and make them excited about the adventures. We really want to thank them for being there and supporting us and being interested in it.

Brown: And for knowing the show better than we do in many instances which keeps us on our toes.

Sloan: Yep. It’s awesome.

Q: Cool. Thank you very much.

Both: Thank you.

According to Variety, The Avengers and Her star Scarlett Johansson has signed on to DreamWorks’ live-action American adaptation of iconic Japanese anime Ghost in the Shell. Rupert Sanders (director of Snow White & The Huntsman) is on board to direct, with Avi Arad (producer of the Spider-Man trilogy) and Steven Paul as producers. Their screenplay comes from Bill Wheeler, who seems to be well within the spy-thriller genre in case you want an idea how this adaptation might play out.

From Variety:

Johansson is set to star in DreamWorks’ adaptation of the popular anime pic “Ghost in the Shell.” Deadline Hollywood had reported that the actress had the offer to star but at the time she was still undecided about taking the role. Sources now say she has agreed to star in the pic.

The story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.

Was Lucy a success? An action heroine is something I’ll always get behind, but somehow I always miss those movies opening weekend. SaltColumbianaLucy, and yet I’ll shake my fist at the studios for not having Gamora or Wonder Woman front and center of their superhero movies. I’m a hypocrite. Burn me at the stake.

I’m not sure which part I should concentrate on here. I’m excited for Scarlett Johansson’s star to keep rising because I think she has the talent and charisma to become a true triple-A blockbuster icon, but I can’t get excited for an American Ghost in the Shell. I have no stake in honoring the source material because I’m not the biggest anime fan, so they’re free to deviate as they wish for all I care, but even I know Hollywood’s shitty track record on adapting Asian properties for American shores. There is a reason why Ghost in the Shell resonated with so many people on its own, but in turning it into something for everyone you lose a lot of nuance, more than just the gritty details of the who and the what. It’s the why of the story that gets muddled. I can’t really say I’m looking forward to that.

But hey, great for Johansson. I’ll be looking forward to seeing her kick more ass at least.

Dreamworks Animation presented a panel on their upcoming movie, Penguins of Madagascar, the next installment of the Madagascar series, which is centered fully on the adventures of everyone’s favorite flightless birds, the Penguins.

Directed by Eric Darnell (writer for the previous Madagascar movies) and Simon J Smith (Bee Movie), and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Ken Jeong, John Malkovich, Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, John DiMaggio and Christopher Knights, Penguins takes the Skipper and his compatriots deep into the world of global espionage.

dreamworks-animation-panel
Benedict Cumberbatch at the SDCC Penguins of Madagascar panel. Cumberbatch plays Agent Classified in the upcoming movie.

Cumberbatch, Malkovich and McGrath were at Comic Con to talk about their work on Penguins; Cumberbatch plays Agent Classified, a 007-type agent (and also a wolf) who runs a MI-6/SHIELD type agency, while Malkovich takes on the role of the villain, Dr. Octavius Brine (an octopus, naturally). McGrath reprises his role as Skipper, the erstwhile leader of the Penguins.

A–very good–trailer clip was shown to loud applause, and the cast discussed their experiences working on the animated film.

“It was a really interesting character to play.” said Malkovich. “He’s sort of a large, remorseless kind of psychopath, really.”

Cumberbatch revealed that he had just met Malkovich that day, despite co-starring in the movie together, and spoke about how working on the movie taught him a great deal about voiceover work.

The Penguins were originally only in one small scene in the original Madagascar movie, but their popularity has spawned books, a TV show, and now their own movie.

“We found a way to integrate them more into the story,” said McGrath. “And now after three movies, 10 video games, 80 TV shows, they get their own movie.”

Penguins of Madagascar opens on November 26th, 2014. To tide you over, here’s the trailer:

Are you excited? Were you at the panel? What did you think?

Briefly: Dreamworks has just debuted the first teaser poster for next year’s How to Train Your Dragon 2, the sequel to what just may be the best Dreamworks movie of all time.

It’s phenomenal, and if you haven’t seen it, I implore you to do so immediately!

The film hits theatres on June 13th, 2014, and stars Jay Baruchel, America Ferrara, Gerard Butler, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, T.J. Miller, Craig Ferguson, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Director Dean Debiois also returns for the sequel.

Take a gander at the teaser poster below, and let us know what you think!

HowToTrainYourDragon2

The thrilling second chapter of the epic “How to Train Your Dragon” trilogy brings back the fantastical world of Hiccup and Toothless five years later. While Astrid, Snoutlout and the rest of the gang are challenging each other to dragon races (the island’s new favorite contact sport), the now inseparable pair journey through the skies, charting unmapped territories and exploring new worlds. When one of their adventures leads to the discovery of a secret ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace.

Another big name has been added to the cast of Dreamwork’s film adaptation of EA’s Need For Speed. The film, which will star Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) as Tobey Marshall, “sees Paul play a local street racer who, after being framed for the death of a friend, joins a New York-to-Los Angeles race to get revenge.”

Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi has just signed on to play Marshall’s best friend in the film. This isn’t the rapper and producer’s first time on screen though. He recently appeared in HBO’s How To Make It In America and the indie Two Night Stand as well as being rumored to be involved with the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot. Mescudi will join Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, Ramon Rodriguez, Rami Malek and Harrison Gilbertson in the Scott Waugh (Act Of Valor) directed film.

Need For Speed is set to hit theaters February 17, 2014.

Back in May we talked about the possibility of Scott Waugh being the director for the Need for Speed movie.

Well it has been confirmed. On the official Facebook Page, it was announced that they have tied down a contract with Dreamworks and are going to start working on a Need for Speed movie right away.

This begs the question: What do players of racing games want to see in a movie? You have the arcade lovers of the NfS:Underground games, they might be more inclined to enjoy a fast paced Fast and Furious type of movie. Then you have the simulation gamers, those who play Forza 4, they may want a movie with classic streamlined chases like in Bullitt or Ronin.

Regardless, it will interesting to see what comes out of Dreamworks and Need for Speed.

Dreamworks has offered war propaganda “Act of Valor” director Scott Waugh to direct the film adaptation of the hit racing series Need For Speed.

Now Dreamworks keeps insisting that nothing is solid and these are only “discussions”, I am lead to believe they are further along than they want us to think. With George Gatins already said to have written a script.

I am kind of intrigued as to what will come of this franchise on film. NFS has always been a great series of games introducing some great music and different racing themes in all of their releases. With Need For Speed Most Wanted and Undercover introducing strong narrative elements to their games, I can see this series come to film easily.
