June 2017’s Loot Anime crate has arrived and with a theme like “Rise Up!,” you can expect loads of teamwork-centric series are in the mix. And, guess what? You’d be right! Represented in this crate are Neon Genesis Evangelion, Voltron: Legendary Defender (watch it on Netflix – you will thank me later), Knights of Sidonia, Gurren Lagann, and Blame! So, grab a buddy and let’s explore the loot!

As with every Loot Anime crate, subscribers are treated to a poster featuring art inspired by the theme of the month. Here we see Loot Anime’s mascot, Yume, teaming up with a helmet-wearing feline and piloting a cat mecha because cats are awesome. This poster is brought to us by Will Overton and Advocate Art. Flip this sucker over to reveal a list of the shipment’s contents.

The first item, and one that I was particularly excited to receive, was the Evangelion Micro Macro plush. This item is a Loot Anime-exclusive and subscribers had the chance of receiving either Asuka or Rei. As you can see, my shipment contained the latter. The plush is teeny-tiny as one would expect with a name with “mico” in the title. I love the soft texture of the fabric, the simple design, and that she can stand on her own, thanks to PVC pellets at the base of the plush.

Is anyone else psyched for the next season of Voltron: Legendary Defender? I would wager the folks over at Loot Crate are, given that the next item is an exclusive collector pin inspired by the fighting mecha. There is a movable visor piece, which is supposed to give the pin the appearance of the Black Lion or Voltron’s head, depending its position. Unfortunately, the effect misses its mark slightly because the piece doesn’t move down enough to conceal Voltron’s eyes, so the Black Lion version looks a bit off.

Let’s move on to an item that is both fun and functional. Here we have an exclusive cellphone stand staring a mech from Knights of Sidonia. The Rei plush is standing for my phone because that is what I use to take these pictures. The stand itself feels sturdy. It is made of two pieces that lock together but can be taken apart for easy storage.

The Gurren Lagann Art Works by Udon Entertainment is actually out-of-print but Loot Anime managed to procure a limited edition reprint exclusively for its subscribers. The art book is over 130 pages long and is super-shiny and colorful.  Contained within its pages are artwork from DVD covers, magazine spreads, posters, promotional pamphlets, among others.

Here is a peek at one of the spreads in the book.

This Loot Anime-exclusive wearable is a shirt featuring Killy from the anime, Blame! It is a little hard to tell from the picture (not for lack of trying – I took nearly a dozen pictures trying to get it right) but the shirt is muddy brown in color.

This month’s phone charm, the Kitty-Mecha, is actually pretty cute. I haven’t been much of a fan of the phone charms from the last few crates but this one works for me. I dig the cute, simple design and how well it fits the theme.

As frequent readers and current subscribers know, Loot Anime likes to decorate the inside of their boxes to match the month’s theme. Because of all the giant robot-y, outer space goodness in this month, we get a runway used by ships (and presumably mechs) for deployment into the unknown. You’ve got to love the forced perspective.

If this unboxing has you interested in subscribing, you can get some money off of your first crate either by following this link or entering “Geekscape” into the promo code area upon checkout.

Without a doubt, our generation lives in an era with an embarrassment of riches when it comes to geek culture. Case in point…

Voltron Legendary Defender from DreamWorks animation.

Let’s go ahead and skip the, “This writer is old enough to remember when…” and cut to the chase: NetFlix has produced the best iteration of Voltron. Period. You’re going to have to trust us, older geeks: your memory is not as good as you wish to believe.

"Let's be honest, the rosiest of nostalgia headphones can't make this kids voice sound any better."
“Let’s be honest, the rosiest of nostalgia headphones can’t make this kids voice sound any better.”

Voltron: Legendary Defender is what happens when all elements of what make up a good cartoon align in the heavens to give us something undoubtedly awesome; writers who care about story, voice actors who bring the material to life, killer animation, and a production studio with cash.

Let’s work backwards…

  1. The Cash

Obviously, NetFlix is making some wise decisions when it comes to distributing content. They may not have Disney deep pockets, but they’re doing alright for themselves. So before you naysayers spit accusations of scrapping the bottom of the intellectual property barrel, resurrecting the Voltron IP was a smart move. It was an IP that, as previously stated, had potential to actually become a good show. So they threw a sizeable chunk of cash at it till it became exactly that.

Balk all you want, hipster-purists, some things don’t come out right the first time.

"It's okay to let go of the past sometimes, really."

  1. The Animation

What was just released yesterday, June 10th 2016, right off the bat has a very familiar art style. You can thank the former Avatar: the Last Airbender Team for that. A near seamless blend of that traditional anime style, and good ole’ American Saturday Morning Cartoon feeling.

Admittedly, some of the character designs look a little familiar, but it serves to the benefit to the show. It’s kinda like seeing your favorite actor in a new role, if that actor were not a real person.

“Can you pick out the familiar face from the line up?”

Furthermore the action sequences have a fantastic kinetic pacing to them. I would have never in my lifetime thought someone could make giant flying space robots not only look cool as shit, but animate them in a manner where I could tell what the hell was going on.

Everything from the backgrounds, to character designs truly does a fantastic job of keeping the spirit of the original show and grows into it’s full potential. Which brings us to…

  1. The Voice Work

What the people behind Legendary Defender absolutely needed to do was take top tier talented individuals, and make sure that ensemble cast played seamlessly off each other to form one badass unit. You know, like a bunch of individual robots that form together to make one big robot… hold on… the name is just on the tip of my…

So, again, compared to the original where it sounded like people reading from cue cards with all the enthusiasm of human rice cakes, Legendary Defender’s cast brings depth to what would otherwise have been a collection of stereotypes. Everyone from Voltron 2016 crew, thank Glob, puts forth the effort to evoke well rounded characters with depth, and in some cases a fair amount of intrigue.

Hearing Finn the Human play off his new cast mates was another added plus. But, the delicate balance between the humor and gravitas of this space opera wouldn’t have been possible without the writers.

  1. The Writing

This show could have just as easily been another cash grab off of a familiar IP to suck us dry of our nostalgia.

Legendary Defender, is NOT.

In fact, Voltron 2016 goes above and beyond the call of duty to expand upon the 1984 original’s foundation. From minor details, to character development, and even the logistics behind robot-space-lions, the development team genuinely cares about the source material, and then some to make it their own.

Stakes are raised, goals are established, and character motivations make sense; all things that didn’t have to happen in a cartoon series, but did. You better believe this show’s got it in spades.

On top of all that, the sound design is also pretty damn stellar too. Even taking into account how much we all love hearing lasers and explosions IN SPACE, another excellent marker of a cartoon show is one that’s not afraid to be quiet for a moment. That’s right, a show about giant fighting space robots isn’t afraid to be still and let it’s audience take in the grand experience this show has to offer.

VERDICT

Having only heard about Legendary defender back in January when it was announced and then completely forgot about it, as soon as YouTube interrupted the video I was watching with the trailer this writer binge watched THE WHOLE SERIES.

All of it.

We highly recommend you go open your Netflix browser and bask in the glory of one of the most badass 80’s robots of all time. When you’re done, give Netflix a Tweet and let them know you’ll want the next season as soon as humanly possible.
*Yes, Super Sentai shows started in the 1970’s, but if there’s a Death Battle between Voltron and the your pick of Mega Zord, my money is on the Defender of the Universe.

With its June 10 release date approaching, the Netflix Original TV show Voltron: Legendary Defender has released another trailer. This time, the trailer is exclusive to IGN and can be found here.  The video gives fans a taste of what to expect in terms of action  and combat scenes. I know was certainly impressed. Shifting camera angles, blends of CG and traditional art, and smooth animation all left me hopeful. Interestingly enough, additional videos and images can be found on the official Voltron Facebook page.

This show is shaping up to be a must-see on my list. Will you be watching when it debuts on Netflix June 10?

We got our first trailer for the new Netflix Original Series ‘Voltron Legendary Defender’. The trailer which seems to cover the one hour origin story definitely focuses on the lightheartedness and humor, reminds me of the Thundercats reboot.

Voltron force

For now I will reserve judgment since the show is co-produced Joaquim dos Santos who was also a co-producer of The Last Airbender Series ‘Legend of Korra’, which is known for founding that perfect balance of being goofy and serious throughout the series.

Voltron Lions

The Netflix original series DreamWorks ‘Voltron Legendary Defender’ reimagines one of the most popular fan-favorite shows of all time in this all-new comedic action-packed show from executive producer Joaquim Dos Santos (The Legend of Korra, Avatar: The Last Airbender) and co-executive producer Lauren Montgomery (The Legend of Korra). Five unsuspecting teenagers, transported from Earth into the middle of a sprawling intergalactic war, become pilots for five robotic lions in the battle to protect the universe from evil. Only through the true power of teamwork can they unite to form the mighty warrior known as Voltron.

DreamWorks Voltron Legendary Defender debuts on Netflix June 10, with a special hour-long origin story called “The Rise of Voltron,” followed by 10 episodes.

This weekend was all about WonderCon and ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’! To help us piece through everything, Brianne and Stacey from the ‘6 Degrees of Feature Film’ podcast! Stacey and I give our Spoiler-Free thoughts on ‘Batman V Superman’ while Brianne helps us breakdown the goings on at WonderCon… including receiving an indecent proposal! We discuss Arseface being revealed in AMC’s ‘Preacher’ series, ‘Voltron: Legendary Defender’ and the promise of DC Comics’ big event ‘Rebirth’! So yeah… it’s a pretty packed episode! Briefly: After debuting the series’ official logo just last month, Netflix and Dreamworks have officially debuted the first trailer for the upcoming Voltron: Legendary Defender.

Formed by five robotic lions, the mighty warrior known as Voltron returns after 10,000 years to protect the universe from evil. This time around, Voltron is “the last line of defense for Arus and other planets against an evil alien force led by King Zarkon.”

I’ve never been a huge Voltron guy (not because it never interested me, I simply never got around to it), but I’ll gladly watch anything with the Netflix stamp of approval on it, so I’m definitely looking forward to this experience.

Take a look at the trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you think! Voltron: Legendary Defender hits Netflix on June 10th!

Briefly: We still don’t know much of anything about the title, but Netflix and Dreamworks have just revealed the official title and poster for Voltron: Legendary Defender.

The series is expected to release in 2016, as is the Guillermo Del Toro series Trollhunters that was announced via the same partnership.

I’ve never been a huge Voltron guy (not because it never interested me, I simply never got around to it), but I’ll gladly watch anything with the Netflix stamp of approval on it, so I’m definitely looking forward to this experience.
