M. Night Shyamalan returns to form with his engaging potboiler “Split” opening this weekend wide from Universal Pictures.

A man named Kevin (James McAvoy / X-Men) kidnaps three young ladies who come to discover that their captor has 23 distinct personalities.

<Spoiler Free>

You’ve seen enough Shyamalan films over the years to know that his style is all about stories where you don’t know what’s going to happen next, and then when it happens, it’s not at all what you’d expect. That twist has become his signature move, and how well he takes us on the journey to that twist, is the defining aspect of his film being a hit or miss. “Split” easily classifies itself as one of his films that works and is true-to-form to what first put Shyamalan on the cinematic map. “Split” is definitely on the same page as his breakthrough film “The Sixth Sense” and later “Unbreakable,” but where those two films are quiet and somber this one is more visceral in scope.

“Split” is best enjoyed knowing little going in, so with respect to that I touch on only the most broad strokes of the film.

Easily the biggest factor to what makes the whole movie come alive is McAvoy’s performance. Not unlike Joanne Woodward who starred in “The Three Faces of Eve” back in 1957 who took home an Oscar for her role depicting three personalities, McAvoy takes it beyond the next level. His character is comprised of 23 personalities, of which 6 are featured in the film. With minor wardrobe changes, McAvoy convincingly portrays each character with different speech patterns, walks/shuffles, and idiosyncrasies that convey an impressive array of skill as an actor. Even so, Oscar rarely pays attention to films of this nature but in the genre of sci-fi thrillers, McAvoy kills it!

Running in hand with him is another striking performance from emerging talent Anya Taylor (The Witch) as the lead of the three who are kidnapped. She gave an enthralling performance in “The Witch” and takes some of that raw inner energy she brought to that role, and instills it in her character “Casey.”

Shyamalan pays attention to details in character development giving back-story as to why “Casey” is reacting the way she does. Doing so gives her character depth and gravitas so that the character feels real and reacts in ways that make sense avoiding mismatched character motivations so evident in films of this nature.

While “Split” isn’t quite on par with ‘The Sixth Sense” it far exceeds many of Shyamalans films in recent past. However it isn’t anything new and ground breaking, rather it’s just more of the same. “More of the same” meaning, his stories are generally about a situation that may or may not be supernatural but in the end probably is, and has twists, and probably another twist. That sums up all his films that come to mind. Shyamalan’s “Split” is ranked as one of the better incarnations of his repertoire as his characters are flushed out and equally well acted. The delivery of information is well-paced and the style is engaging mostly from start to finish.  However because he didn’t break any new ground, despite the spectacular acting from McAvoy, the film scores just above average.

4 out of 5

Briefly: Following the insanely cool trailer from just a couple of weeks back, Fox today debuted four gorgeous new character posters for next month’s X-Men: Apocalypse, each image depicting one of Apocalypse’ four horsemen.

In the film, “Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.”

Take a look at the new X-Men: Apocalypse posters below (via the film’s official Twitter account), and let us know what you think! The film hits theatres on May 27th!

En Sabah Nur.

En Sabah Nur.

En Sabah Nur.

Praise be unto En Sabah Nur!!!

The one true GOD, Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), has come to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. He will unleash upon us his four horsemen, Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Archangel (Ben Hardy) and the disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender).

As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young inexperienced X-Men. These fools are nothing but whinny valley kids, Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan); a mall rat, Jubilee (Lana Condor); and a circus freak, Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee). They do have a bad ass speedster though, i mean have you see this guy in action? DAMNNN QUICKSILVER (Evan Peters). These losers will try and stop the one true God in a feeble attempt to save mankind from complete and utter destruction that it deserves.

Briefly: This is a damned cool spot. As much as I loved seeing Krang for the first time in the just-released new teaser for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows, the total destruction witnessed in this new spot for X-Men: Apocalypse might be the coolest Super Bowl trailer thus far (well, unless you count Ant-Man and Hulk fighting over a Coke as a Super Bowl trailer).

Briefly: The very first trailer for X-Men Apocalypse launched earlier today, and probably stopped the Apocalypse / Ivan Ooze comparisons for good.

Seriously, the character looks astonishingly powerful, and with Psylocke (Olivia Munn) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) on his side (among others) it’s going to be an impossibly tough battle for McAvoy’s Xavier and company.

If that bad-ass trailer wasn’t enough, Fox has just debuted a stunning new poster for the film, which features an angry Apocalypse crushing… what else but a human skull.

Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Take a look at the new poster below, and let us know if you’re excited for the film!

Apocalypse

The ‘X-Men: Apocalypse‘ trailer is upon here, all praise Apocalypse!! Oscar Isaac will portray En Sabah Nur (better known as Apocalypse), is a centuries-old mutant who was worshipped in Ancient Egypt as a God. After awakening in the 1980s, he is dissatisfied with the state of the mutant’s on the planet, and goes on to recruit Psylocke (Olivia Munn) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) to be a part of his Four Horsemen to help him cleanse the world.

I’ve always been a great fan of the X-Men Franchise, so i’m definitely excited to catch the latest installment. I think my favorite thing about the X-Men franchise is that instead of rebooting the series it decided to keep the history and continuity of the earlier films. Which probably had more to do with keeping Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. And to rectify the not so popular ‘Last Stand’, and the status of the staple X-men characters it went back and time and retconned it. GOTTA LOVE COMICS!!

By M&M’s.

Yep. The candy revealed a partnership with 20th Century Fox today, which officially began with the debut of this synopsis, and a ‘cute’ photo of M&M’s dressed like Storm and Magneto.

In any case, here are the goods:

In any case, what do you think of the synopsis? Do you like what we’ve seen of Apocalypse thus far? Or are you still trying to get passed the Ivan Ooze comparisons?

This weeks Entertainment Weekly is featuring X-Men: Apocalypse. On the cover we have Psylocke, Magneto, and Apocalypse and set photos of some of the cast.

Cover

We also get a  first look at new comers Psylocke (Olivia Munn) and Punk Rock Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan). The returning mutants are Magneto with a new look (Michael Fassbender), Professor X (James McAvoy), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), and Quicksilver (Evan Peters) who also is sporting an official outfit. No pics of Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) though, he was probably the only thing I enjoyed about X2.

While we haven’t seen everyone in official  outfits, Storm and Psylocke seem to stick close to the the 80’s sexy outfits. I have already seen some grumblings regarding the look of Apocalypse. In one of the photos he is resembling Ivan Ooze from the Power Rangers Movie. At this point It’s really hard to judge the costumes until we see it on the big screen and in action so I’ll reserve judgement.

Apocalypse

Quicksilver

Prof X

Storm

Magneto

Briefly: While we’ve been busy catching up with all the Comic-Con news, we missed the awesome first posters for Bryan Singer’s upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past.

The posters feature a stylish, original design, that each showcase both versions of the portrayed characters. One image features both Michael Fassbender and Ian McKellen as Erik Lehnsherr, while the other spotlights James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier.

They’re both absolutely awesome images, and a great start to the film’s marketing. I can’t wait to see what comes next! Take a look at the posters below, and let us know what you think! X-Men: Days of Future Past hits theatres on July 18th, 2014.

Opening wide this weekend is Danny Boyle’s (Slumdog Millionaire) edgy thriller, Trance, starring James McAvoy, Vincent Cassell, and a naked Rosario Dawson. The story is a twisty, on-the-edge of you seat ride that drops you off in a completely different spot than where it begins.

The film opened limited a few weeks ago, and since then the word has gotten out that Trance is an experience you shouldn’t miss. Going from limited to wide distribution means big bucks and big bets that the film will be well recieved from the general public.

In a recent round table interview, Danny Boyle talks to Geekscape about his film ‘Trance’, the challenges of keeping the story straight, making sure the audience doesn’t get lost in all the twists and turns, as well as the creation of the characters and the plot.

Danny Boyle: “We wanted… to try and make a modern noir but not call it that really. You take some of the elements of noir, which usually involve crime, -they usually involve characters locked inside a bubble; trapped inside a bubble, -as they try to manipulate, control, overcome each other, rise up, and actually end up destroying each other. We wanted to use that element, but we wanted to put a twist on it so that the femme fatale, if you like, who appears to be behaving like a classic femme fatale at times using her allure, her beauty, to manipulate the man, the two men in this case, Vincent Cassel and James McAvoy.

Actually, she’s got a story that is not cold and it’s not about behavior. She’s not just behaving worse than the men morally. She’s actually trying to overcome the insurmountable odds herself that she faces, -her character; because of her story, which is unraveled toward the end. There is damage there and emotion there, -if you like, by the end.

That was intriguing for us to play with those, but the story and the characters all came together at the same time, to be honest. They develop and change as you work with different drafts of the script, but those key elements were there right from the beginning.”

Danny Boyle explains how he filmed “Trance” before the London Olympics, and then put it away for six months while he produced and created the opening ceremony for the 2012 Summer Olympic games. When his Olympic duties were complete, he came back to his film to put it together with editor Jon Harris (127 Hours).

Telling a complex story is difficult, and a writer who sees the film over and over has to keep in mind that the audience is going to see it only once.

Danny Boyle: “One of the ironies of filmmaking is that you’re entrusted as director with presenting the film to an audience, whereas in fact, who are only going to see it probably once. Whereas in fact, you, as the custodian of that process, have seen it 200 times. So in fact, there is an argument that you’re the least qualified person to actually do that job because you’ve known the standing of what it’s like to see it first time.

In the case of Trance actually, because it’s such an important element of it, we were helped by the fact that we shot the film while we were preparing the Olympic opening ceremony in London, but we didn’t edit it until we’d finished the Olympics. There was a six month gap where the footage was put on ice, if you’d like. When we came back to it, it did feel, more than any other experience I’ve ever had on filmmaking, I did feel like I was seeing the story for the first time again, which you never get back to other than the first time you read the script. But it felt like we did a little bit on this and that certainly helped us in presenting the story. It’s one of the ironies and it’s one of the reasons, -I know a lot of filmmakers hate the preview, the testing process. I actually like those screenings because although what people say afterwards can be quite hurtful, it’s actually incredibly useful to experience live an audience watching the film for the first time, because you can feel where the rhythm of the film isn’t helping them, where they need more help.

I enjoy that process actually, but it’s a fascinating question and it’s one of the ironies of filmmaking for sure, really. I think what you compensate with, in the sense, because you’re over familiar with the material, you also are passionate about the material in a way. It’s like your own child. You love it, you know everything about it, you want the best for it, and I think people sense that and they’ll forgive you maybe that you didn’t help the audience enough at one point. They’ll forgive you that because of your passion for the project.”

What’s next for the writer/director?

Danny Boyle: “We’re also working on a 28 Days, a third part of 28 Days Later. We did talk about at one point about doing a different version of The Beach, Re-editing The Beach, because we left out a lot of material that I think we shouldn’t have…. That’s one that we’ve talked about.

Whether these things are realistic or not, it’s very difficult to say, but certainly Trainspotting will be something that we hope to work on in the coming year, in the near future.”

Boyle’s career began with his film Shallow Grave and then the illustrious film Trainspotting starring Ewan McGregor. He’s known for writing and directing projects with strong stories that captivate audiences including his 8 Academy Awards he won for Slumdog Millionaire. His film, 28 Days Later, which follows a zombie apocalypse, predates the current trend of shows like The Walking Dead, and coming soon film World War Z.

Bottom Line: Trance is masterful story-telling and will keep you guessing up until the very end. Thoroughly entertaining and satisfying, Trance delivers a meaty story with top notch performances from McAvoy, Cassel, and Dawson. The twists and turns are intriguing but not confusing, and an achievement in editing from Jon Harris.

It’s been a bit since we’ve heard any news regarding Relativity’s new adaptation of James O’Barr’s The Crow. The film, which has F. Javier Gutierrez attached to direct and Jesse Wigutow writing the script, has had several names rumored to be attached to the lead role of Eric Draven. We’ve heard that Bradley Cooper was once attached to star and both Mark Wahlberg and Channing Tatum were both considered as candidates. Now, there’s another actor linked to the film’s lead role.

Actor James McAvoy

James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class) is said to be currently circling the role of Eric Draven (who was played by Brandon Lee in the original film), who is “brutally murdered [and] comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée’s murder.” The only problem apparently is that McAvoy’s commitment to X-Men: Days Of Future Past, which starts shooting in a few months, may keep him from taking the role in the remake.

This looks damn cool.

Fox Searchlight has just released the first trailer for Danny Boyle’s (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) next film, Trance. The upcoming thriller seems to have a lot going for it, including an awesome cast rounded out by James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson, and Vincent Cassell.

Watch the trailer below, and let us know what you think! Trance is set to hit UK theatres on March 27th, while a North American release has not been set.

TRANCE, directed by Oscar®-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) and co-written by Oscar®-nominated long term collaborator John Hodge (Shallow Grave, Trainspotting) is a seductive and enigmatic thriller starring James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel and Rosario Dawson.

Fine art auctioneer Simon (McAvoy), in league with a gang led by underworld boss Franck (Cassel), plots the audacious theft of a masterpiece by Goya from a major public auction. When Simon double-crosses the gang during the robbery, Franck retaliates violently and knocks him unconscious.

In the aftermath of the heist, Simon sticks stubbornly – and perhaps shrewdly – to his claim that the violent trauma has left him with no memory of where he stashed the artwork.

Unable to coerce the painting’s location from Simon, Franck and his associates reluctantly join forces with a charismatic hypnotherapist (Dawson) in a bid to get him to talk. But as they journey deeper into Simon’s jumbled psyche the boundaries between reality and hypnotic suggestion begin to blur and the stakes rise faster and far more dangerously than any of the players could have anticipated.

It’s been awhile since we’ve heard anything new on ‘Wanted 2’ and to be honest I think alot of people had kind of forgot about the project even. But recently during the press round for ‘Abraham Lincoln:Vampire Hunter’ The Playlist spoke with Berkmambetov and he told them about the film being very much back on track.

“An unbelievable thing happened three weeks ago,” Bekmambetov said “Because we stopped, we didn’t know what to do for three or four years. Three weeks ago I came up with a great idea and I pitched this idea and everybody fell in love with it. And now I think we’re on track. Right now the writer is working on the script, and it will be shocking.”

“It’s a continuation of the story, with Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy). Other people are dead, you know, we can’t bring them back. The story is the same character, same mythology, but it’s got a great twist.”

Now while ‘Wanted’ was quite dramatically different than the comics I thought it was a really good and well done movie. Here is hoping to a sequel that lives up to it.

Wanted is a 2008 German-American action film, very loosely based on the comic book miniseries of the same name by Mark Millar and J. G. Jones. The film is written by Chris Morgan, Michael Brandt, and Derek Haas, directed by Timur Bekmambetov, and stars James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman, Thomas Kretschmann, Common, Terence Stamp, and Konstantin Khabensky. The storyline follows Wesley Gibson (McAvoy), a frustrated Account Manager who discovers that he is the son of a professional assassin and decides to join The Fraternity, the secret guild in which his father worked. Production began in April 2007, with filming in the Czech Republic later to superimpose the sets on images of Chicago. Wanted was released on June 25, 2008 in the United Kingdom and two days later in the United States, to both critical and commercial success. It was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
