Another Sundance selection continuing its festival rounds at SXSW include Bart Layton’s new docu-drama American Animals. While the docu-drama is typically reserved for television dramatizations based on true life events, Layton has mastered that form of storytelling in a feature-length format. First with his BAFTA winning 2012 film The Imposter, and now with this biographical account of four college students who conjure up a risky plot to steal priceless art and historical books housed in the library of their small Kentucky university.

Narrated by the real-life Spencer Reinhard (portrayed in the dramatization by Barry Keoghan), Warren Lipka (Evan Peters), Chas Allen (Blake Jenner) and Eric Borsuk (Jared Abrahamson), American Animals takes the audience back to 2005 where Spencer and Warren spend their days smoking pot and imagining a more meaningful existence filled with purpose and excitement. And when Spencer discovers that their Transylvania University’s library is home to books and art valued in the millions of dollars, he and his best friend begin to wonder if they could successful pull off a heist. Yet, their wild fantasies slowly morph into a reality as they welcome two other friends into the plan and attempt the unthinkable.

Interweaving narrated accounts of the events with Layton’s uncanny ability to transform real life into blistering entertainment, American Animals reassures with its opening text that “This is not based on a true story”, but rather “This is a true story”. And from that catchy beginning through an insightful introduction to our two main characters, Spencer and Warren, the film paints a fascinating portrait of wealth and privilege gone rogue. You’ll be hard-pressed to pinpoint one clear motive for their crimes. Were they committed out of boredom, were they done to rapidly obtain a life of financial complacency, or was it all just a beautiful storm of complex motivating factors spawned from a deeper, intrinsic underbelly? Whatever the reason, Layton and company take the audience on a thrilling ride that blends a typical uptempo heist-film tone with comedic intersections between its real-life narrators and dramatic actors. The experience is fresh and innovative, something that feels post-modern and well before its time. And beyond this absorbing tale is an excellent cast that helps carry out Layton’s unique vision. Evan Peters steals the show in his portrayal of Warren, the film’s suggested ringleader who pushed hardest to go through with the heist when the time came. American Animals commands your attention and takes you on a worthwhile ride unlike anything you’ve ever experienced.

Briefly: X-Men: Apocalypse finally made its way to North American theatres this past weekend, and whether you love or hate the divisive film, it’d be downright impossible to deny just how damned cool Evan Peter’s Quicksilver’s slow-motion scene was this time around.

While I don’t know that I enjoyed his scene in Apocalypse as much as I enjoyed his feature in Days of Future Past, I found myself laughing at just home impressive the scene was, as well as just how absurd the scene was, throughout.

Fox has just debuted a new featurette for the film that shows off just how the scene was created, and it’s definitely worth the watch. Take a look at the video below, and be sure to let us know what you thought of Singer’s latest X-Men film!

Briefly: Following the insanely cool trailer from just a couple of weeks back, Fox today debuted four gorgeous new character posters for next month’s X-Men: Apocalypse, each image depicting one of Apocalypse’ four horsemen.

In the film, “Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.”

Take a look at the new X-Men: Apocalypse posters below (via the film’s official Twitter account), and let us know what you think! The film hits theatres on May 27th!

En Sabah Nur.

En Sabah Nur.

En Sabah Nur.

Praise be unto En Sabah Nur!!!

The one true GOD, Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), has come to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. He will unleash upon us his four horsemen, Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Archangel (Ben Hardy) and the disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender).

As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young inexperienced X-Men. These fools are nothing but whinny valley kids, Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan); a mall rat, Jubilee (Lana Condor); and a circus freak, Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee). They do have a bad ass speedster though, i mean have you see this guy in action? DAMNNN QUICKSILVER (Evan Peters). These losers will try and stop the one true God in a feeble attempt to save mankind from complete and utter destruction that it deserves.

Witness the destruction of the weak humans in theaters May 27, 2016

Briefly: This is a damned cool spot. As much as I loved seeing Krang for the first time in the just-released new teaser for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows, the total destruction witnessed in this new spot for X-Men: Apocalypse might be the coolest Super Bowl trailer thus far (well, unless you count Ant-Man and Hulk fighting over a Coke as a Super Bowl trailer).

Briefly: The very first trailer for X-Men Apocalypse launched earlier today, and probably stopped the Apocalypse / Ivan Ooze comparisons for good.

Seriously, the character looks astonishingly powerful, and with Psylocke (Olivia Munn) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) on his side (among others) it’s going to be an impossibly tough battle for McAvoy’s Xavier and company.

If that bad-ass trailer wasn’t enough, Fox has just debuted a stunning new poster for the film, which features an angry Apocalypse crushing… what else but a human skull.

Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse

The ‘X-Men: Apocalypse‘ trailer is upon here, all praise Apocalypse!! Oscar Isaac will portray En Sabah Nur (better known as Apocalypse), is a centuries-old mutant who was worshipped in Ancient Egypt as a God. After awakening in the 1980s, he is dissatisfied with the state of the mutant’s on the planet, and goes on to recruit Psylocke (Olivia Munn) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) to be a part of his Four Horsemen to help him cleanse the world.

I’ve always been a great fan of the X-Men Franchise, so i’m definitely excited to catch the latest installment. I think my favorite thing about the X-Men franchise is that instead of rebooting the series it decided to keep the history and continuity of the earlier films. Which probably had more to do with keeping Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. And to rectify the not so popular ‘Last Stand’, and the status of the staple X-men characters it went back and time and retconned it. GOTTA LOVE COMICS!!

Briefly: The official synopsis for X-Men: Apocalypse has finally been revealed.

By M&M’s.

Yep. The candy revealed a partnership with 20th Century Fox today, which officially began with the debut of this synopsis, and a ‘cute’ photo of M&M’s dressed like Storm and Magneto.

In any case, here are the goods:

In any case, what do you think of the synopsis? Do you like what we’ve seen of Apocalypse thus far? Or are you still trying to get passed the Ivan Ooze comparisons?

This weeks Entertainment Weekly is featuring X-Men: Apocalypse. On the cover we have Psylocke, Magneto, and Apocalypse and set photos of some of the cast.

We also get a  first look at new comers Psylocke (Olivia Munn) and Punk Rock Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan). The returning mutants are Magneto with a new look (Michael Fassbender), Professor X (James McAvoy), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), and Quicksilver (Evan Peters) who also is sporting an official outfit. No pics of Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) though, he was probably the only thing I enjoyed about X2.

While we haven’t seen everyone in official  outfits, Storm and Psylocke seem to stick close to the the 80’s sexy outfits. I have already seen some grumblings regarding the look of Apocalypse. In one of the photos he is resembling Ivan Ooze from the Power Rangers Movie. At this point It’s really hard to judge the costumes until we see it on the big screen and in action so I’ll reserve judgement.

Apocalypse

Quicksilver

Prof X

Storm

Magneto

Briefly: With just a few months to go until X-Men: Days Of Future Past hits theatres, Fox has finally given us our first look at Even Peters’ Quicksilver in the film.

It’s a single image, and it’s pretty low resolution (we’ll be sure to update once a high-res version hits the web), but it at least gives us a decent look at a character that we’re all very excited about.

Take a look at the image below, and let us know what you think! X-Men: Days of Future Past hits theatres on May 23rd!

Quicksilver

The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The beloved characters from the original “X-Men” film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from “X-Men: First Class,” in an epic battle that must change the past – to save our future.

Bryan Singer sure loves his twitter.

After posting countless set photos, first looks, and other news, the X-Men: Days of Future Past director has revealed a late casting addition to the project. American Horror Story‘s Evan Peters has joined the film, and will play the ‘swiftest’ mutant around, Quicksilver.

Of course, The Avengers director Joss Whedon recently revealed that Quicksilver (and his sister, Scarlet Witch) would be a part of The Avengers 2. This is bound to cause some confusion among fans, seeing as each project is not only coming from a different team, but a different studio as well. My guess is that we’ll be seeing substantially different versions of Quicksilver between the two films.

Check out Singer’s tweet below, and let us know what you think of the news! X-Men: Days of Future Past hits theatres on July 17th, 2014!
