Danny Boyle has always been a stylish filmmaker whose work resonates with me on a very deep level. I loved his powerful illustration of survival in 127 Hours and his unforgettable love story with Slumdog Millionaire. Therefore, the moment I heard that Danny Boyle was teaming up with Academy Award winning writer, Aaron Sorkin, and leading man, Michael Fassbender, to resurrect the seemingly cursed film project, Steve Jobs, I became cautiously optimistic. And despite all of the film’s well-documented hurdles and obstacles with assembling the proper team, Boyle and company still manage to deliver what PC pioneer Steve Wozniak himself described as the best on-screen depiction of the late Steve Jobs.

Set in three scenarios directly prior to product launches during the 1980s and 1990s, Steve Jobs (Fassbender) is forced to sift through personal issues regarding the daughter he denied, malfunctions with his software and grudges with his closest confidants. Through the aid of his hard-nosed assistant, Joanna Hoffman (Kate Winslet), Jobs manages to keep his life somewhat in order as he navigates through our world’s greatest technological boom.

There are plenty of commendable attributes surrounding Danny Boyle’s latest work. Steve Jobs is a perfectly-paced and well oiled biopic that leaves an abundance of room for Michael Fassbender to reveal his natural acting talents. And although Fassbender’s charasmatic performance will most likely nestle him into Oscar contention, perhaps it’s the fine-tuned work of Kate Winslet that rings most memorable. The Academy Award winning actress not only displays herself as the rock in Jobs’ unpredictable and capricious work environment, her character acts as the voice of reason in the Apple co-founder’s personal life as well. If there’s a reason worth watching the latest examination of Steve Jobs, it’s for all the fine performances from these two scene stealing leads all the way down to Jeff Daniels, Seth Rogen and Michael Stuhlbarg.

Despite the top flight acting splashed all throughout Steve Jobs, there are many disappointing aspects to the film. First and foremost, writer Aaron Sorkin’s peculiar decision to frame the story within three distinct moments provides a wide set of pros and cons. Although its refreshing to branch away from the traditional structure of a biopic, which generally meanders through a checklist of pivotal moments in a subject’s life, Sorkin’s choice creates a setting unnatural for proper character development. Furthermore, this dialogue drowned script provides absolutely zero action throughout the film. But thankfully, Danny Boyle utilizes sound filming techniques to keep conversations interesting to the viewer and the cast delivers their often snarky and humerus quips to perfection. These saving graces both provide a counterbalance to an otherwise less than thrilling screenplay.

Steve Jobs is a worthwhile film that offers a fair amount of highs and lows. And to its benefit, all of the film’s events and situations unfold smoothly in a quick and painless fashion that will leave the credits rolling before you know it. Steve Jobs is far from Danny Boyle’s finest work and nowhere near a Best Picture contender, but it’s another strong effort from a fantastic filmmaker that showcases plenty of award-worthy performances.

20th Century Fox has released a new poster for ‘The Martian’. The poster features Matt Damon as Astronaut Mark Watney peering into your soul with his dreamy big blue eyes and his “I’m fucked” face.

New+Poster+The+Martian

I just recently read Andy Weir’s The Martian and it was easily the best book I’ve read in some time. It’s a quick read and would suggest anyone to give it a shot before the movie comes out. When the cast was announced I started to compare the actors to the books characters and based on the trailers, Matt Damon perfectly embodies the Mark Watney character. Personally, the performance I’m most looking forward to is Kristin Wiig’s take on the foul mouthed firecracker Annie Montrose.

And in case you missed it, here is the most recent trailer that was released a week ago.

‘The Martian’ invades theaters October 2, 2015.

Briefly: It’s hard to say how Dumb and Dumber To will turn out (though I did laugh a lot at that first trailer), but the film’s two new posters are downright hilarious.

One of this Summer’s most polarizing films was Luc Besson’s Lucyan action-thriller about a woman who gains the ability to use her brain’s entire capacity, along with a bunch of bad-ass powers in the process. Here’s the film’s poster:

Lucy

Now, here are the latest posters for Dumb and Dumber To:

Harry

Lloyd

That’s some damn good cross marketing, isn’t it? Dumb and Dumber To hits theatres on November 14th.

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprise their signature roles as Lloyd and Harry in the sequel to the smash hit that took the physical comedy and kicked it in the nuts: Dumb and Dumber To.  The original film’s directors, Peter and Bobby Farrelly, take Lloyd and Harry on a road trip to find a child Harry never knew he had and the responsibility neither should ever, ever be given.

Briefly: It’s still hard to believe that a true sequel to Dumb and Dumber is coming after all these years (20 years, to be exact), but the release date of the film is fast approaching, and Universal Pictures has just debuted the first official still from the film.

It looks, well, dumb (which is a good thing, isn’t it?). Take a look at the image below, and let us know what you think! Dumb and Dumber To hits theatres on November 14th!

Briefly: The long awaited Dumb and Dumber To is now in production, and earlier today both Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey took to twitter to give fans their first look at Harry and Lloyd.

Yep, they’re looking old.

But they’re also looking as dumb as ever, which is fantastic.

Take a look at the two photos below, and let us know what you think! Dumb and Dumber To is set to hit theatres next Summer.

I can honestly say that if I don’t see another movie this year after Looper, I would be fine with that. There have been few truly great movies that have done what Looper has done. Rather than giving us an adaptation of something we have already seen, writer/director Rian Johnson delivers us an original story and does it brilliantly. Trust me, when I say that you are going to be seeing Rian Johnson’s name around a lot more after this film.

Sure, time travel is nothing new in science fiction films, but Johnson brings us a fresh idea on the subject. And if you think you know what is going on in this movie based on the trailers, I am here to tell you that you don’t. This movie is definitely more cerebral and complex than you expect it to be and you’re hooked on the plot from the very beginning. This is not a date night movie by any means because Johnson intends to blow your mind here and accomplishes the feat.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Joe lives in 2042. He’s a Looper, a hired assassin for the mob (but the mob of 2072). Loopers are given contracts that tell them to be at certain places at certain times in order to perform hits sent from the future. At the exact time stated in the contract, a tied up and hooded target pops into 2042 and in an instant are killed and their bodies destroyed.

Loopers make a good living off this. A mafia that exists in both times run things and Jeff Daniels plays Abe, who is from the future and coordinates the contracts in the past. A mad man is taking over the business in 2072 and for unknown reasons is terminating the contracts of the Loopers. At the time of your contract being terminated you are to kill yourself and cash in heavily, also known as a “loop”. That’s where Willis, who plays Joe from 2072, comes into play. Willis presence in the past is no mere coincidence, but rather the start of a much larger mission to alter the future.

Not only is this movie very smart but it is also quite funny and full of action packed sequences. The shots are beautiful and the visuals are amazing. The film is crisp and quite stylish and the cgi feels very natural and quite real. It also accomplishes the feat of creating a believable future without overdoing it.

Looper is a film that is less concerned with the sci-fi elements than it is with the development of its central characters. Sure, this isn’t done perfectly but it done very well. Now, while all of the performances are great, it’s really Joseph Gordon-Levitt that shines in this film. Levitt has prosthetic attached to his face so he would look more like younger Bruce Willis, and once you get past that you know it’s there, you really get lost in how much he looks and acts like Willis.

Levitt definitely gives this film his all and it clearly shows. Willis gives a very emotional performance as future Joe and Jeff Daniels and Emily Blunt are also great in this film. But child actor Pierce Gagnon gives the most unexpected and fantastic performance in the film. I can’t tell too much about his role without revealing anything about the plot but he’s definitely one of the highlights of the film. When this loop comes full circle you will definitely not expect it.

Looper, without a doubt, is definitely one of the best films to come out this year. The story is going to throw you through a “loop” that will having you walking out of the theater and instantly begin discussing the themes of the movie with the people you saw it with.  Time travel has not yet been invented but you do have the ability to relive these two hours over again and you are going to want to.

Rating: 5/5

Sometime around March director Rian Johnson had announced that they were planning a viral campaign for the upcoming Looper. Well, it’s started guys and they’re inviting YOU to be a looper. All you have to do is head over to Looper Network and sign up but there’s a catch. There’s always a catch right?

There’s a stipulation in every Looper’s contract that he may someday be required to hunt down his future self, thus closing the contract, getting a huge pay-off and erasing any trace of the very illegal arrangement with his or her future employer.  This is called Closing Your Loop.  Cash out, get paid.  Live those 30 years like only a Looper can.

Well, this also reveals a little bit more about just what is happening in the movie. You guys better hurry up and sign up now because the first mission is scheduled to go down August 22nd! But you can pick up your gear now.

And a few of the propaganda images from the site:

Looper is in theaters September 28th.

HBO is doing everything in their power to promote the hell out of Aaron Sorkin’s return to TV…oh wait, it’s not TV, it’s HBO. Starting today, they are offering the pilot episode of The Newsroom for free on HBO.com, Youtube, DailyMotion, and TV.com. They will also offer it as a free podcast on iTunes.

I watched it last night and absolutely loved it. I’m a big Sorkin fan, so I was naturally bound to enjoy it. Some people will find the show to be a tad preachy in parts, but it’s worth checking out. The show is excellently cast and Jeff Daniels is fantastic.

The show stars Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Dev Patel, Alison Pill, Olivia Munn, and Sam Waterston. The pilot was directed by Greg Mottola, director of Superbad, Adventureland, and Paul. There’s also a cameo (voice) appearance by a certain actor in the pilot. See if you can figure out who.
