The Last Boy Scout (1991) VHS Movie Review | VHS Box Art Front and Back

VHS Back of the Box Description
The Last Boy Scout is the Super Bowl of action movies, a flat-out blitz of excitement, blow-you-away special effects and hilarious gimme-five humor set against the world of pro football.

Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans star as a seedy detective and disgraced quarterback, teaming to dodge ambushes, fire off one-liners and bust chops. When the going gets tough, they get tougher. And funnier. They came to play. And to settle a score in this raging fireball where bigger is better, hits are harder and bad guys end up deader.

Sending in plays from the sideline are guys with experience screenwriter Shane Black (Lethal Weapon), producer Joel Silver (the Die Hard and Lethal Weapon films) and director Tony Scott (Top Gun). Along with Willis and Wayans, they ensure The Last Boy Scout isn’t like other films. Be prepared.

Trivia

  • ♦ Shane Black wrote this after struggling with Lethal Weapon 2 and a break up that triggered him to quit writing for almost two years:

“I was busy mourning my life and, in many ways, the loss of my first real love. I didn’t feel much like doing anything except smoking cigarettes and reading paperbacks. All things come around. Time passed, and eventually, I sat down and transformed some of that bitterness into a character, the central focus of a private eye story which became The Last Boy Scout. Writing that script was a very cathartic experience, one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I spent so much time alone working on that. Days which I wouldn’t speak. Three, four days where I maybe said a couple of words. It was a wonderfully intense time where my focus was better than it’s ever been. And I was rewarded so handsomely ($1.75 million) for that script, it felt like a vindication and like I was back on track.”

  • ♦ At the time this was a record purchase for an original screenplay ($1.75 million).

Joel Silver and Shane Black

Troubled Production

  • ♦ Joel Silver, Bruce Willis, and Tony Scott fought a lot on set. Silver was described as “insane, with long, horrible fits of sanity,” and was compared to a fighter pilot riding as a passenger. “As soon as you hit a little bit of turbulence, he’s right away going to throw the guy out of the window and take over the steering.”

  • ♦ The original cut for “borderline unwatchable.”

  • ♦ Bruce Willis and Damien Wayans DID NOT like working with each other.

  • ♦ Assistant director James Skotchdopole (a fantastic second unit director, True Romance, and Untouchables) attributed the tension on-set to an “overabundance of alpha males on that project. Bruce was at the height of his stardom, so was Joel, so was Tony and so was Shane. There were a lot of people who had a lot of opinions about what to do. There were some heated, early-Nineties, testosterone-charged personalities on the line. It was a ‘charged environment,’ shall we say.” Writer Shane Black had to wrestle with the script. “I was forced to do more rewriting on that movie than on anything else I’ve done. There was tremendous pressure from the studio to get Bruce Willis and have this be a follow-up to Die Hard. He was reluctant, and rightly so: ‘This whole movie is about me saving my wife. I just did that in Die Hard.’ So they said, ‘OK, let’s minimize the wife, and while we’re at it, add a big finale.’ There was a general pressure to make somehow more significant and better!

  • ♦ Different editors were hired in an attempt to address Scott’s tendency for filming excessive coverage with multiple cameras. Editor Mark Helfrich (Predator and Rush Hour) described sorting through “mountains of raw material” to edit the first cut: “There was more footage shot for The Last Boy Scout than on any film I had ever worked on.”

  • ♦ Expert action movie editor Mark Goldblatt (The Terminator/T2 and Starship Troopers) recalls it as one the most painful and frustrating experiences of his entire career and refuses to discuss it in interviews. Although, he did mention in a podcast interview that several other editors were hired and then fired before him and that Warner Bros. began testing the movie before it was finished.

  • ♦ When editor Stuart Baird (Superman and Lethal Weapon) was hired, the film finally took a positive turn. Baird had been brought in to help re-edit other troubled productions, including Tango & Cash (1989) and Demolition Man (1993). He got the film edited down NC-17 to R with quick cuts away from the hardcore violence.

Nominated for two MTV Awards
Best Action Sequence – For the helicopter blade sequence (Won by L.A. Freeway Scene – Terminator 2: Judgment Day)

Best On-Screen Duo – Bruce Willis & Damon Wayans (Won by Dana Carvey and Mike Myers – Wayne’s World)

So a blonde, a brunette and a redhead walk into a mansion full of supposedly-dead celebrities… Wait, is that how the joke goes? It’s probably funnier when Bruce Willis tells it in 1992’s shoulda-been-a-Tales-From-the-Crypt-installment Death Becomes Her. This week is special because everyone pretty much agrees that this movie rules, even Adam – IT’S A MIRACLE! Come on you apes, you wanna live forever?? It’s Horror Movie Night!

He’s finally said it. People have debated, fought, angrily yelled at each other for years, and all it took was one fan approaching a microphone and asking.

Tonight at Wizard World Philadelphia, a fan walked up to the microphone and asked him a simple question, after admitting to hours of arguing with friends, on Facebook and even on discussion websites.

“In Sixth Sense, did Cole know Bruce Willis’ character was a ghost from the start?”

Without even hesitating, Shyamalan simply said straight-forwardly, solidly, without a doubt, a resounding “Yes! Of course!”

Briefly: Well, I can’t exactly watch it, but it doesn’t mean that I’m not excited about it.

Syfy has just debuted the first 9 minutes of its anticipated 12 Monkeys adaptation. The series’ follows the journey of a time traveler, Cole, from the post-apocalyptic future.  Using a dangerous and untested method of time travel, Cole arrives in the present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will eventually decimate 93.6% of the human race. Will Cole be able to save the fate of mankind or is mankind bound by fate? Taking place in the ravaged future of 2043 and the present day (2015), 12 Monkeys explores themes of destiny, fate, love and the possibility of second chances.”

I loved the film, and I’m definitely down for this adaptation (let’s just hope it doesn’t stink).

You can take a look at the preview below (bearing that you’re in the USA), and be sure to let me know how it is! 12 Monkeys premieres on January 16th!

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, is the sequel to the gritty, perverse, irreverent and occasionally funny Sin City, created by the iconic graphic novelist Frank Miller (300, The Spirit) and directed by Robert Rodriguez. Both movies live in the black-and-white, highly stylized, extremely violent oeuvre both Miller and Rodriguez are known for, but unlike it’s predecessor, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is all about the style, with no room for story or substance.

Bruce Willis and Jessica Alba in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
Bruce Willis and Jessica Alba in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Senator Rourke (Powers Boothe) returns as the ultimate bad-guy, but the role, which was the underpinning to the Hartigan (Bruce Willis)/Nancy (Jessica Alba) story that drove the first movie, is two-dimensional here. He is a bad guy because he is a bad guy–all sense that the power he holds has perverted his greatest strengths to his most horrible vices is gone. It is especially clear in his interactions with Johnny (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a story which seems to exist in the movie solely to show that (a) Gordon-Levitt looks very good in a tight suit and a smirk, and (b) that Rourke is a terrible person. Which we already knew.

A Dame To Kill For suffers from these issues through out. The main story–about Dwight (Josh Brolin here, Clive Owen in Sin City), and his one-true-love/femme fatale Ava Lord (Eva Green, playing the cat eyed, sullen, secretive part we’ve seen her do before, only this time with a LOT more nudity–seriously, we now know more about Green’s body then we ever really wanted to)–feels forced and falls flat of the deep, haunting, resonating love story between the doomed Hartigan and Nancy we saw in the first movie.

Josh Brolin and Eva Green as Dwight and Ava in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
Josh Brolin and Eva Green as Dwight and Ava in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

The subtle and clever interweaving of individual story and plot that made Sin City more than just a comic-book movie, and vaulted it into cult-status, is missing completely here. While there are multiple viewpoints and stories being told, including an intro by Marv (Mickey Rourke, unrecognizable in Elephant-man style make-up), each story stands by itself, touching against the others only by chance at Kadie’s Bar, where Alba’s Nancy performs a series of increasingly embarrassing strip-teases. Nancy is watched over by Marv (for some unknown reason), except when he is manipulated by one of the other characters to go off and get involved in murder and mayhem. This lack of coherence and depth, despite the solid performances by the entire cast, makes A Dame To Kill For merely all right–occasionally funny, and sometimes cringe-inducing, but never riveting.

The largely black-and-white film uses sharp, evocative jabs of color (red blood, green eyes, a sudden flash of strawberry blonde hair) as not-subtle-at-all indicators of characterization or an attempt-at-wry commentary (Ava’s eyes go green when her true character is revealed). Characters leap out of the black-and-white world of Miller’s Sin City, capturing the essence of the visual work extraordinarily well. We saw it 3D, which added nothing except a vague headache caused by the glasses.

Overall, the film is visually stunning, well acted, but unable to drive its story across numerous characters and plot lines.

Geekscape Rates: 2.5/5 Stars

Briefly: Just days after Sylvester Stallone revealed that Harrison Ford had joined The Expendables 3, and that Bruce Willis was “greedy” and “lazy” and would not be returning, the Patrick Hughes directed film has added two more players.

Stallone revealed today that Mel Gibson has signed on for a role, and will play the film’s antagonist. Antonio Banderas has also joined the project, though his role has not been specified.

The cast of The Expendables 3 keeps getting bigger and bigger, and I’m starting to wonder if the film can fit this many stars. The Expendables 3 has already added Jackie Chan, Nicolas Cage, Milla Jovovich, Wesley Snipes, and Harrison Ford to the crew, and I’m sure we’ll see even more additional casting before production wraps. Let us know what you think of the latest news, and if you’re looking forward to the film! The Expendables 3 hits theatres on August 15th, 2014.

Briefly: The ever evolving cast of The Expendables 3 changed once again today, both adding a new (and long sought after) player, and losing an already established one.

First, Sylvester Stallone revealed on twitter that Harrison Ford had been cast in the film… and that Bruce Willis would not be returning:

Just a few moments later, Stallone tweeted again, in what must be referencing a falling out between him and Willis:

Summit Entertainment has just released the first clip from Red 2, and it’s very, very fun.

The clip, titled Show Me Something, features Byung Hun Lee and Helen Mirren in the midst of a shootout… while driving a ridiculous car. It certainly looks like an absolute blast, and is likely a great representation movie’s tone.

Take a look at the clip below, and let us know what you think! Red 2 hits theatres on July 19th!

In RED 2, the high-octane action-comedy sequel to the worldwide sleeper hit, retired black-ops CIA agent Frank Moses reunites his unlikely team of elite operatives for a global quest to track down a missing portable nuclear device. To succeed, they’ll need to survive an army of relentless assassins, ruthless terrorists and power-crazed government officials, all eager to get their hands on the next-generation weapon. The mission takes Frank and his motley crew to Paris, London and Moscow. Outgunned and outmanned, they have only their cunning wits, their old-school skills, and each other to rely on as they try to save the world-and stay alive in the process.

Every time that I see a new preview for Red 2, I get more and more excited for it. I still haven’t seen the first film, but with the sequel releasing on July 19th, I’ve still got a month to prepare.

Summit Entertainment has just released two new TV spots for the film, which help solidify the fact that it should be a lot of fun. Much of the cast from the first film returns, including Bruce Willis, Hellen Mirren, John Malkovich, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and plenty of others! Take a look at the new spots below, and let us know what you think!

Summit Entertainment has just released a neat new poster for Red 2. It’s pretty similar to the first one-sheet for the film (though from another angle and without the silhouette effect), but it gives us a good look at the main cast who certainly look like they’re ready for another mission.

I still haven’t watched the first film, but Red 2 looks like an extremely fun ride (watch the latest trailer here), so I’ll definitely be checking it out before the sequel hits theatres on July 19th. Take a look at the new poster below, and let us know what you think!

While it wasn’t the best of the series, Live Free Or Die Hard did perform well at the box office and of course Fox is going to go after another installment in the Die Hard franchise. Total Film report that Ben Trebilcook has been brought on to pen a treatment for the film, which is currently titled Die Hardest (which may not be the final title), which will reportedly see the story begin in New York before moving to Tokyo.

Trebilcook, who actually wrote an earlier version of the fourth Die Hard film, believes that his take on the franchise will please fans and “is extremely faithful to the franchise and characters and is a natural progression. It’s also a very plausible storyline.” He also went on to state “[There’s] the possibility producers might go back and find some other source material to base the next one on, like they did with the first and second. Mine though, I feel it could be the Rocky Balboa of the Die Hard franchise.” The film is still in early stages of production and no release date has been set yet.

Originally slated for August 2nd, Red 2 was recently pushed up a fortnight to July 19th. It’s a good thing too, I don’t want to wait that long to check this one out.

As we get closer to the release date for Jon Chu’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Paramount has released another action packed TV spot for the film. It’s only a few weeks away and you should know that anticipation levels for the film are high. Because, well…knowing is half of the battle.

With the release date just under two months from now, the viral marketing for G.I. Joe: Retaliation is heating up. After a major delay to post-convert the movie into 3D (and trust me…it’s pretty damn impressive post-conversion) and the release of a few new trailers, anticipation levels for the film are very high. Now the viral marketing for the film has been amped up with new posters, commercials and billboards popping up.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation hits theaters March 29, 2013. Yo Joe!

This weekend Paramount added a special four minute look at the upcoming G.I. Joe: Retaliation to 3D screenings of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. A low-quality version of the preview has made its way online. The preview footage, which is part of a longer ten-minute Himalaya action sequence, is partially inspired by the classic 1984 story “Silent Interlude” from the G.I. Joe comics and is told entirely without spoken dialogue. If the rest of the movie is anything like this scene, it looks like we’re definitely going to be getting a great G. I. Joe film.

While the cast of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For has been shaping up very nicely (everyone from Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Josh Brolin to Mickey Rourke to Ray Liotta seem to be involved), Bruce Willis, who played the extremely major character of Hartigan in the first film, has been oddly silent. We’ve been wondering for some time now if he’d even make it into the film, or if his (still major) character would have to be recast.

You can now quit your worrying and rest easy, as Robert Rodriguez has just confirmed to MTV that the venerable (and busy) actor is confirmed for the sequel. It’s brief, but you can’t get much more of a confirmation than this:

“Bruce is back, so you’ll be seeing him.”

Excited? You can watch the interview with Robert Rodriguez below (though only if you’re in the US, which means that I haven’t seen it). The topics include Bruce Willis (of course), and they also delve into both the 3D elements of the film, and just who Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be playing. Enjoy!

This means that John and his son Jack, played by Jai Courtney, are going to curse as much as they want, shed as much blood as they want, and just kick as much ass as they want when the film comes to theaters next month.  This is definitely good news and means this film may return the feeling of the originals that we all love.
