Just filed last Friday in a California District Court is this juicy little lawsuit. In it, G.I. Joe writers David Elliot and Paul Lovett, are asking, NAY DEMANDING $23 MILLION be paid in damages for creative theft and copyright infringement.

In the complaint, the plaintiffs claim the story of G.I. Joe Retaliation was similar in every material way. The two where hired to write the first Joe film in 2009, but were passed over for the sequel. When retaliation was released, Elliot and Lovett were PISSSED! ( That’s 3 S’s mad. Like a cobra).

I say give the charges a read, the legal description of a “Reboot” is worth it enough. It appears that they are going after EVERYONE, including our friends over at Hasbro. As Geekscape’s Law & Order expert, we will most likely see this settled out of court.

More info as it comes out.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has established himself as a massive Hollywood draw and saved yet another franchise. G.I. Joe: Retaliation not only dominated the North American box office this weekend but smashed the international box office as well.  Paramount are happy enough with the performance of Jon Chu’s film that they have already made the decision to move ahead with a sequel.

Yo Joe! You can check out our review of G.I. Joe: Retaliation here.

Last summer, Paramount surprised many when they decided to push back the opening of Jon Chu’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation to March of this year in order to post-convert the film to 3D. Did you think that was going to end up hurting the film’s opening? Well, if so, you thought wrong. Cobra isn’t just out to dominate the world this weekend, but the box office as well.

The film opened up on Wednesday night bringing in $2.25 million (which is great for a Wednesday night opening) and continued on with a strong Thursday that pushed the film’s two day total to $11 million. The film isn’t getting love from the critics, but the fans are loving it and Retaliation has been receiving an ‘A-’ CinemaScore from audiences. Chances are that the film could open to above $50 million domestic, making a third film almost a guarantee.

Wonder what we thought about the film? You can check out our review of G.I. Joe: Retaliation here.

Were you worried that Jon Chu’s sequel to 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra would repeat the mistakes of its predecessor? Ease your fears because it definitely did not. The year’s first big blockbuster delivers everything you could possibly want from a G.I. Joe movie and maybe even a little more. This time around Paramount enlisted a team of fans of the property and the result is a film that improves upon its predecessor in pretty much every way imaginable. Retaliation doesn’t just take one step in the right direction for the franchise, it takes ten. This is such a good G.I. Joe movie, you almost forget that Rise Of Cobra even exists.

While it is a direct sequel to The Rise Of Cobra, Chu and company remove the sillier elements in a way that almost reboots the franchise while continuing where we left off at the end of the first film. Didn’t see the first film and have no intention of ever watching it? I don’t blame you at all. Don’t worry, there’s an opening bit that will get you up to speed and establish where we are at in the Joe world. The story is simple and it shouldn’t be any other way. Cobra is out to take over the world and it’s only the Joes can stop them. There’s a few subplots in the film, one in particular that even I found myself scratching my head about, but the good outweighs the bad when it comes down to them. Overall the story is action-packed, face paced and heavily influenced by Larry Hama’s classic run on the comic series.

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION

Director Jon M. Chu really brought it with this film. If you thought the director wouldn’t be able to handle this based on what he has done in the past, prepare to insert your foot into your mouth. The action scenes in this film are fun, exciting and just plain awesome. The film’s Himalaya scene in particular definitely raises the bar for action sequences. The mountainside dialogue-free fight between Snake Eyes, Jinx and a horde of Red Ninjas, which was inspired by Larry Hama’s “Silent Interlude”,  is a massively thrilling sequence that feels bigger than life.

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION

The performances are pretty damn solid throughout the film. Dwayne Johnson stands out though and is perfect as Roadblock and dominates whenever on screen. The only real “weak” link in the film is RZA as Blind Master. The scenes with him are over the top goofy and somewhat cringe worthy at times. Maybe the campy vibe will work with some but for me it didn’t. Everything is great about the ninja aspect of the film, expect for the scenes that he is. On the bright side though, he is in only a few. But let’s move on to something more important. The villains in this film are spot on. Unlike the character we saw in Rise Of Cobra, this IS Cobra Commander. He’s got the right look, the right attitude and an evil and menacing as hell voice. Ray Stevenson is awesome as Firefly and keeps his mask on more than you’d expect which works to the film’s advantage. You actually get a real COBRA this time instead of some random “nanomite controlled” randoms in metal suits with lazer guns.

The final verdict here is that G.I. Joe: Retaliation is definitely a true G.I. Joe movie. If you’re going into this expecting Oscar worthy material, you’re in the wrong place. If you’re just out for a bad ass action movie that brings the true essence of the franchise to life, you should know that this film is for you. And knowing is half the battle, right?

Rating: 4/5

Paramount has released another featurette for the G.I. Joe: Retaliation, this time focusing on the man behind the movie, director Jon Chu. The featurette doesn’t feature much as far as new footage, but definitely should increase your excitement for the film. You can really tell in this video that Chu is a definite fan of the franchise and how excited he was making this film. Two more weeks to go!

In this sequel, the G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy, Cobra, they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence. The film stars D.J. Cotrona, Byung-hun Lee, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce, RZA, Ray Stevenson, Channing Tatum with Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson. Directed by Jon M. Chu, and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Brian Goldner, written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick based on Hasbro’s G.I. Joe® characters.

Now i’m sure by now you’ve heard that film has been pushed back to next year but that doesn’t mean Paramount isn’t going to keep pushing the film. Courtesy of ICG Magazine we have some new stills from ‘GI Joe: Retaliation’ including a few behind the scenes ones.

Yeah. I paid to see “GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra”. I think a lot of us did. And we paid dearly. Can we ever be redeemed?

Well, if this new trailer posted by our friends at Machinima is any indication, the answer is yes. The plot is already better, with Zartan replacing the President of the United States and ordering the destruction of the Joes and implementation of Cobra as the lead national security force. Oh, and you also get The Rock and Bruce Willis raising eyebrows at each other a few times. Pretty romantic.

All in all, this is looking a lot more like “G.I. Joe: Redemption” than “Retaliation” but we’ll take it! Hell, we’ll take anything after that last mess…

First they put nipples on the Batsuit, and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Batman fan.

Then they reduced The Force to midichlorians, and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Star Wars fan.

Now they’re coming for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and I am speaking out. Shouting in fact. And I’m not alone.

In case you haven’t heard, Michael Bay recently announced that his 2013 reboot would redesign the Turtles’ origin as extraterrestrial. Instead of ordinary pets mutated with ooze, Bay’s Ninja Turtles will be aliens. From space. Turtle-shaped aliens.

As you might imagine, the blogosphere lit up like a mannequin covered in light bulbs at the news. Nerds all over the Internet gathered to bay at Bay, voicing their vitriol at the change to their beloved TMNT.

The anger was so widespread, in fact, that Michael Bay was forced to address it head-on with an official statement on his website:

Fans need to take a breath, and chill. They have not read the script. Our team is working closely with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles to help expand and give a more complex back story. Relax, we are including everything that made you become fans in the first place. We are just building a richer world.

Bay doesn’t understand why people are so upset when they haven’t even heard the full pitch of his changes. So I will explain it to him in a language he understands:

OOM-BAY!!

But seriously, the reason we aren’t happy is obvious. These are the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. If you are willing to change something as fundamental as a descriptor in the title, how can anything be safe?

This is the type of mercurial change thrown out by a suit that doesn’t get the importance of art in pop culture, that doesn’t see how committing to and enriching a story is better than tossing it out and using a new one. The decision was clearly made by someone who was not a fan of the Turtles, only of the money that can be made off their name.

Michael Bay doesn’t have any love for the Turtles; if he did, he wouldn’t be doing this. Besides, after the inglorious debacle that was the Transformers trilogy, how can we be expected to trust this guy with our favorite franchises?

Which face do YOU trust?

So why don’t you chill, Michael Bay. Because that’s what people do when they don’t care one way or the other. I’ll be over here with the nerds, worked up into a frenzy and telling anyone who will listen. Because I do care. Because it matters to me.

People often confuse nerd rage with Internet trolling, but the two couldn’t be more different. Trolls draw from a place of hate, a deep dark well of dissatisfaction that they can’t release in their public lives. They wait until they can hide in the high grass of the Internet and let their bile fly.

The Secret of the Ooze

Nerd rage, on the other hand, comes from a place of love. Our aggression is that of a mother protecting her child. We love things so much that we can’t stand to see them destroyed.

Because that’s what defines us nerds. Love. Forget all of the descriptions you’ve heard; we don’t need to be hyper-intelligent, socially awkward, or technologically inclined. Nerds are people who love something so much that they examine it obsessively in an effort to completely understand it, and thus to ultimately understand ourselves.

I love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I grew up watching the cartoon, collecting the action figures, playing the video games. I even played TMNT with my brother and some kids around the neighborhood. The Ninja Turtles gave me countless hours of pure childhood joy.

Michael Bay gave me racist robots.

Tyler Perry's Mudflap and Skids

Even if the Turtles aren’t your thing, if you’re a nerd like me, I guarantee something you love has been tampered with, tainted, or destroyed by non-nerds. The Rise of Cobra, the gentrification of The Last Airbender, whatever 2003’s The Cat in the Hat was supposed to be- something has been marred forever thanks to the tinkering of people who don’t love the characters the way you do.

Or maybe your favorite story is next.

If we don’t tell the Michael Bays of the world exactly how we feel every time, they will take our silence as implicit consent. And without a solid phalanx of dissent, the suits will interpret a mix of negative and positive comments, no matter how lopsided, as “indeterminate”. We have to band together under a common nerd banner and cry “NO” to Darth Vader crying “NO.”

We need to speak up for the Turtles, or they won’t be there to speak up for you. Because they’ll be on Ork or something.
