This past weekend, as the D23 Expo dropped bomb after entertainment bomb on the world, one of the lesser-known but extremely interesting characters that surfaced was a new series set for release on Disney+ called Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. The show was announced Saturday amid a ton of other news, and this one drew my attention because I had just met one of the co-creators of the character and comic book, Brandon Montclare, at Keystone Comic Con in Philadelphia. Montclare, along with Amy Reeder and Natacha Bustos, created the character.

The show Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur will follow the adventures of 13-year-old Lunella Lafayette and her best friend/time traveling partner/pet, Devil Dinosaur. This show is adapted from the Marvel Comic Series and is produced in conjunction with Laurence Fishburne’s Cinema Gypsy Productions.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #1, via Marvel.com

Lunella is the self-proclaimed smartest person in the world in the comics, and one of her inventions creates a time warp that allows Devil Dinosaur, a vintage 1970s Marvel character created by Jack Kirby, to appear in present day and help her fight bad guys.

I sat down to ask Montclare some questions about his comic and the upcoming show.

DF: Give readers who may not know of the comic your description of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.

BM: Moon Girl is Lunella Lafayette, a nine year old inventor and she is always trying to make new gadgets to save the world, or to at least make herself happy. One of these gizmos malfunctions and teleports Devil Dinosaur from the past into the present day, and Devil Dinosaur is just a big red Tyrannosaurus Rex who was created by Jack Kirby… they become reluctant partners. They need each other, as all buddy cop stories go.

DF: How did the character of Moon Girl come to be?

BM: Moon Girl was originally Rocket Girl, and Marvel really liked what we’d done with the image, and said “Maybe you guys can do something for us”…we had a meeting…and very early on they mentioned Devil Dinosaur was something that might be cool that nobody was working with. It was a property they were trying to revive and they were also looking for something geared towards younger readers…there was a supporting character in the old Devil Dinosaur that was Moon Boy, which was just a cave man back in the dinosaur world…so we came up with a brand new character, we made her a girl, and instead of being set in the dinosaur world we would bring it up to speed, so it kind of developed that way. There’s a huge tradition of scientific Marvel characters…Peter Parker, a kid who was able to make his own web shooters, plus Tony Stark, Mister Fantastic and Ant Man…so we made this superhero in the same mold as all of the other guys and gals, and gave a little twist on it.

DF: How do you feel about the announcement at the D23 Expo that your comic was picked up for a show on Disney+?

BM: Super excited. I really wanted to make Moon Girl feel like a Marvel book. For me it’s about the chance to make a character that’s going to be a part of that universe. So I want her interacting with other characters, whether it’s [working with] Iron Man, fighting Doctor Doom, or whatever. Marvel has gone on so much beyond the comics, the movies, the shows and everything else…so I’m super excited about it. And I really do like seeing other people’s take on it. It’s pretty cool.

DF: How did Moon Girl end up working with some members of the Fantastic Four?

BM: I really liked working on that arc. It was called Fantastic 3 because what happened was at the time, in the regular Fantastic 4 book Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman were presumed dead and lost in the multiverse someplace. In our story Moon Girl found a way to send Devil Dinosaur back to his own time to correct accidentally transporting him. So she lost her partner, and The Thing and the Human Torch were left without their partners, so they thought it was a good idea to combine forces and do what the Fantastic 4 couldn’t do anymore…but [working together] was a bit of a disaster. It all works out okay and Devil Dinosaur ends up coming back as a fourth member of the Fantastic 4, they had to fight the Silver Surfer, Galactus and a couple of new characters…but now the original members are back and she was an ancillary member.

Moon Girl fights with The Thing and The Human Torch as part of The Fantastic 3

DF: Could you see Moon Girl in the MCU at some point?

BM: Sure! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying she will be. I would just love to see it. Maybe in Phase 9.

The comic Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is on a current run, and the show is slated for Disney+ sometime in 2020.

This weekend, Geekscape’s Dennis Finocchiaro is heading to Keystone Comic Con in Philadelphia, which runs from 8/23-8/25. Here are his top five must-see moments of the upcoming convention.

5. The Cosplay. Philadelphia always comes out and puts on a crazy show when it comes to costumes at conventions. This one shouldn’t be any different! Can’t wait to see the variety and creativity.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B0rD0nLD57m/
One from SDCC, but Keystone has its own amazing cosplay.

4. Artist Alley. One of my favorite parts of a con is walking around artist alley and seeing who is represented. Some of the best conversations I’ve had at conventions were with artists and writers.

3. John Carpenter. Can’t wait to see this horror legend! His panel should be one of the more interesting I’ve been to. Halloween? Yes please! The Thing? Definitely a great movie. They Live? Sure!

John Carpenter’s The Thing is a classic horror film.

2. Harry Potter Reunion: For the first time in Philadelphia, Ginny, Fred and George Weasley, (Bonnie Wright, James Phelps & Oliver Phelps) are having a Q&A and I cannot wait. Being a huge Harry Potter fan, this is a must-see moment of the con for me. Of course, I’d rather my personal favorite from Harry Potter, Neville, come to Philly for a visit, but this should be epic.

1 – Tom Holland. He would have been #2 on this list, but after all of the drama between Sony and Disney over Spider-man, this has been moved to number 1. The kid known for spoilers might not know much, or maybe he has the inside scoop. He is speaking Sunday, and it is sure to be a big moment.

Tom Holland at SDCC. Will he slip up and give us more information in Philadelphia?

In the Philly area? Will you be headed to KeyStone Comic-Con? Let us know what you’re excited to see!

This past weekend, Philadelphia was treated to a con first: Ted Danson. Like many of his characters, he was charismatic and quite interesting to hear speak.

Ted Danson at Wizard World, Philadelphia.

He treated fans to some of his favorite moments in shows, including Cheers, The Good Place, CSI, Curb Your Enthusiasm and more.

The crowd seemed most interested in The Good Place. He discussed the upcoming final season, and how it was ending by choice of the creators, not canceled. “Usually the network calls and says you’re all fired…this was the creator of the show, Mike Schur (The Office), who realized that he will have told the story that he wanted to tell. And he didn’t want to pad it and have those episodes where we are all caught in a snowstorm and we reminisce…and it’s pure padding.”

He even teased the crowd a little bit while discussing awards shows. “You all have award shows for your professions, right? No? That’s weird!”

He was asked about his favorite show to be a part of. “I’m a little bit of a Polyanna. I love whatever I’m doing at the moment. I truly love going to work. Cheers was brilliant…but I was 32 in a bar surrounded by idiots and actresses paid to say I’m sexy.” He then went on to discuss a shoot where Woody wasn’t wearing underwear, and in the show Woody the character jumped up on the bar (in the show) and Danson yanked down his pants in front of everyone.

In what was probably the highlight of the panel, George Wendt, who played Norm on Cheers, surprised guests by walking into Danson’s panel with a few minutes left. The only disappointment was that nobody yelled “Norm!” as he walked in. The two were asked about favorite moments on the show, which Wendt answered, talking about the two “Woody quotes” that he thought were funniest.

George Wendt and Ted Danson at Wizard World, Philadelphia.

Wendt also admitted that he sat at the bar for so long that he kept himself busy in a rather amusing way. “I sat right next to the waitress station, and there were these cocktail napkins and cocktail straws, and just bombard people with spitballs…if you freeze frame you can see spitballs dinging off his forehead.”

“My crowning moment was Ted had his mouth open…” and you can guess where that one goes.

The whole panel is available for viewing if you want to watch. Definitely worth it.

What was your favorite Ted Danson moment in a show or movie? Let us know in the comments below!

The Good Place returns in its fourth and final season September 26th.

Wizard World Philadelphia is fast approaching, taking over the city from June 13th to 16th. I thought I would list the events I am most excited to experience through the anticipated weekend.

5. Ted Danson. No question, I am most excited to see him speak. He simply covers everyone at a convention — Even some of the parents dragged to the show can hear what he has to say about being on Cheers. But I am anticipating hearing him talk about recent shows, especially Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Good Place, which is so entertaining. Hearing what someone has to say who has been in the entertainment industry for as long as he has, and has done what he has done, should be quite entertaining.

4. Gotham’s Ben McKenzie. I saw him speak last time he was in Philly, and he had some great stories about working on the show. But now that it’s over and impossible to spoil, this should be a great event.

3. The Magicians panel. I don’t know how many of you are watching this show, but it’s outstanding. Wizard World has Hale Appleman and Stella Maeve, who play main characters on the show, and I can’t wait to hear what they have to say. Especially Appleman, who plays one of the more outrageous characters I’ve ever seen.

2. Artist’s Alley. I have always enjoyed walking around and talking to the artists and writers. This year they have some exciting additions, plus some of the regulars that are every show. Should be a blast.

1.The costumes. Cosplay is always out in full force in Philadelphia for these events, and I’m sure this year won’t be any different. Except that I’ll have my three-year-old with me for a day, and she is going to go nuts seeing people in costumes. Last year she slept through a lot of it.

Are you headed to Wizard World? What are you most excited to see? Sound out in the comments below!

I didn’t know what to expect as I walked into the Marvel Exhibit at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia — I knew from social media that there were photo ops with cool statues, but what I didn’t know was the amount of incredible Marvel history that would be hanging on those walls.

For the comic lover, there were original pencil sketches of first issues. Inked covers with all of the markings of pre-production. A section on the process of how comics were made back when Stan Lee and Jack Kirby first started.

For the Marvel Cinematic Universe fan, there was even more. Iron Man suits in chambers from the films, including Mach 1. Props like Peter Quill’s walkman, The Green Goblin’s helmet, Cap’s shield…the list goes on and on, and I truly don’t want to spoil it for anyone who might be going.

And of course, the social media/selfie/photo ops. There were the statues. Awesome. Sit on the couch with The Thing? Absolutely. Spider-man hanging upside down? I had to wonder how many images of people kissing that statue were out there on Instagram. And there were plenty more as well.

The set up was excellent. When you walk up to a waiting room, there’s a faux-vintage newspaper stand covered with comic covers, transporting the viewer back in time to the beginning of comics. Behind curtains, a five minute movie played, both informing patrons of the history of comics and Marvel, and slowing down the massive number of people I can only assume usually pour into this exhibit. We lucked out…we went late enough that the school trips were all getting back onto their buses, but early enough that most people were still at work.

Visually, one of the coolest parts was a wall of screens showing videos of Stan Lee and all of the cameos he’s had in the films. Very cool.

But if you want my moment of nostalgia, it wasn’t posing with Hulk, or looking at the Iron Man suits and thinking back to where the cinematic universe all started. For me, it was the section on Fantastic Four. That was my go-to as a kid. When I walked in and saw the old issues, covers, and other items featuring the Fantastic Four on the walls, it brought me back to childhood and the hours I spent looking through the Fantastic Four section at the comic shop, trying to decide which back issues to buy, and then that feeling of bringing them home, carefully opening the plastic cover and reading it, wondering what would happen next.

Now when I read Fantastic Four, I mostly hope that they will figure out how to make it into a great film (or if they ever will).

The exhibit is happening all Summer, so if you’re nearby (or are within driving distance) I would definitely make the trip.

From Franklin Institute’s website: Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes features more than 300 artifacts, including some of Marvel’s most iconic and sought-after pages, costumes, and props. Spectacular artifacts to thrill both avid collectors, and casual fans—while immersive set pieces, soundscapes, and interactive elements bring the comic book world to life!

As all true Kevin Smith fans probably already know, the writer/director is working on a sequel to Mallrats, tentatively called Mallbrats.  According to Smith’s visit to The Preston and Steve Show on 93.3 WMMR Philadelphia radio this morning, the big news is that, instead of making it into a film, it will be a ten episode miniseries. Once the film is shot (expected to start in January after the Christmas rush) Smith will shop it around to distributors.

According to Smith, many of the original cast will be back, and in addition, some new surprise guests will be joining. And instead of a comic book store, the mall will be featuring a comic con!

[Spoilers for Captain America: Civil War ahead]

In an interview with IGN, Hayley Atwell started quite a stir with her comments about the idea of Cap dating her character’s niece, Sharon in Captain America: Civil War. He kissed her in the new film, to which Atwell claimed “[Peggy] would be turning over in her grave.”

“…I wouldn’t want to date my great aunt’s guy. It just feels like it crosses an incestuous boundary. And Peggy just died. That’s even more disrespectful, right? It’s like, ‘don’t touch that. You can’t tap that!'”

The romance seemed to start in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where it was eventually revealed that she was spying on him for S.H.I.E.L.D.

Atwell was probably joking around, but it did raise some questions. What do you think? We’d love to hear your thoughts on the topic in the comments.

I just got back from a long Saturday at Wizard World’s Comic Con in Philadelphia, and here are the top five moments of the day.

5.Preacher cover artist Glenn Fabry. What a cool, down to earth guy. My wife is a huge fan of his cover art and couldn’t wait to meet him. Not only did he personalize a cover for her, he was super cool and humble. His prints, which were limited and awesome, were only $10, which is cheap for a Wizard World con. When my wife explained to him how his covers drew her into reading the graphic novel, he told us a story. “I met Dominic Cooper [who is playing Preacher on AMC] here earlier today, and he said my covers were the reason he took the role.” With the new show on AMC, expect this guy to blow up. But don’t expect him to sell out.

4.Discussing Muppets with Guy Gilchrist, who drew the original Muppet comic strip and was eventually asked by Jim Henson to come up with designs for the cartoon Muppet Babies. He said “Jim was planning the baby sequence for the third movie and they asked me to sketch what all of the Muppets would look like as babies.” He went on to say you can always tell which are his because he drew the three lines on their mouths.

3.Thor’s Chris Hemsworth was asked about his character in the new Ghostbusters reboot. A fan said he was basically a reboot of Janine, which is quite a different character than he usually plays, and asked him about the role. He described “Kevin” as “…a lot of improvisation. Once we started, the character really took off. He’s completely wacky…he tries to help but has to be rescued more than he helps.”

2.Tom Hiddleston’s constant denial that he is the new James Bond was…creative. It was brought up several times, and he genuinely seemed to be unsure whether it is him or not, but then again he is a pretty tremendous actor.

DSC_0021

1.Number one was easy. This con collected the faces of the film Back to the Future. There was a panel (more coming on the panel) including writer Bob Gale, Christopher Lloyd, Leah Thompson and the highlight of the whole day, Michael J. Fox. One of the best lines of the day actually came from Fox, who was asked his feelings when he found out he could have been doing the film (before replacing Eric Stoltz). He explained it: “I was in a trailer in Pasadena, where I had yak hair on my face and was drinking lunch through a straw…I heard about the Spielberg movie and wondered, why am I a werewolf instead of doing that movie? I heard Crispin Glover was in it, and I knew Crispin, and I thought to myself, ‘F**k Crispin Glover.'”

DSC_0059

At Wizard World Philadelphia this past weekend, Tom Hiddleston was announced by the moderator as “possibly the next 007” at a fan panel with Chris Hemsworth. The crowd went crazy, but Hiddleston was dismissive of the possibility of becoming the next James Bond.

DSC_0020

“I’m sorry to disappoint you, everybody.  I don’t think that announcement is coming. But I’m very gratified to hear the enthusiasm. There’s not much that I can say that I haven’t already said, but I know… your guess is as good as mine, to be honest.”

He seemed pretty genuine in the fact that he is not the next Bond, as far as he knows. But then again, he’s quite the actor.

It came up again during a Q&A with fans a bit later. When asked if he would dance when he plays the iconic Bond, he laughed and then said “I have no idea.”

Yet another fan asked if he had the choice between playing The Doctor and James Bond, which he would choose. His response was very politically correct, saying “I couldn’t possibly say, because I don’t know that I’ll ever be offered either.”

Sounds like someone avoiding answering the question, doesn’t it? Well, we will all find out soon enough. The announcement is expected sometime soon.

Hiddleston isn’t the only possibility. A few people, including Emilia Clarke, Idris Elba, and Jamie Bell are considered in the running for the role as well.

At long last, fans of both Lego and The Big Bang Theory can rejoice. The images of the new set, due out in August, are here!

1934514-o_19mt08fr43ad1v0u1knpi68bvqb

The set includes minifigures for Leonard, Sheldon, Raj, Howard, Penny, Amy and Bernadette. Due to the large amount of minifigures, the set will retail for $59.99.

Whether a fan of the show or not, this is a really cool collectible that Lego Ideas creators Alatariel and GlenBricker came up with. I’m sure this one will end up in my collection at some point.

The set itself looks fun too, complete with the couch, Sheldon’s spot, take out food, the white board and more! The set is being released on August 1st.

This past weekend at Wizard World’s Philadelphia Comic Con, M. Night Shyamalan treated a small group to the exclusive sneak preview and chat about his new show, Wayward Pines.

WAYWARD PINES: Based on a best-selling novel and brought to life by suspenseful storyteller M. Night Shyamalan (“The Sixth Sense”), WAYWARD PINES is an intense, mind-bending 10-episode thriller starring Academy Award nominee Matt Dillon (“Crash”) as a Secret Service agent on a mission to find two missing federal agents in the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, ID. Every step closer to the truth makes him question if he will ever get out of Wayward Pines alive. WAYWARD PINES will join the schedule in 2015 on Fox. Pictured L-R: Juliette Lewis, Melisa Leo, Matt Dillon, Tim Griffin, Toby Jones, Terrence Howard, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond and Carla Gugino. ©2014 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Frank Ockenfels/FOX

Here are the reasons you should watch:

The show is a combination of Twin Peaks, Twilight Zone and Lost, opened with an amazing first episode, directed by Shyamalan. It is also inspired by David Lynch, to which Shyamalan added “Right now on my desk literally sitting on it is a copy of Blue Velvet by Lynch, to get some osmosis or genius out of it.”

The powerful cast includes Dillon, Terrence Howard, Carla Cugina, Juliette Lewis and Melissa Leo. “Matt was our first choice…and we sent him scripts and he was really excited to do it” Shyamalan added. After getting Dillon signed on, he decided to make it an “East Coast” kind of show and kept trying for actors with that in common.

3765708_G

Wayward Pines had many twists and turns, even in the first episode, and of course ended with a shock. Every seven minutes or so, something would happen that was so surprising and interesting that the audience could not wait for the show to continue. Shyamalan also explained that there’s a significant reveal in every episode that makes it worth watching.

He also calls the show “inappropriately funny” at times. For instance, as the main character, played by Dillon, begs the sheriff (Howard) to come see the dead body he found, Howard listens while eating ice cream, and can’t stop talking about the taste of his rum raisin. Shyamalan added “Now every time we go somewhere for a press junket or something there’s always rum raisin ice cream waiting for me.”

Inside Information. Shyamalan treated the crowd to a nice Q&A afterwards as well, where he gave some interesting tidbits about the show. “He ate like ten ice cream cones and he didn’t stop at all during the takes. I was like ‘you can just pretend’ but that’s not Terrence…and it was actually rum raisin.”

Shyamalan also explained his move to television. “Over the last years, it [the movie business] has become much more about marketability, so the movies being made aren’t artist driven as much as they used to be and are no about marketing, which you can see with all of the pre-existing, pre-branded films. The first question they ask is about how they can market it, and the second question is about the writing…not that you can’t make original movies, there’s just a smaller window for us.”

He attributed the major changes to television to HBO. “The exact opposite is happening in television…then when HBO started, they said we’re not interested in eyeballs, we’re interested in resonance, so [with] Sopranos, they wanted people talking about Sopranos. A couple million people are watching it, but everyone’s talking about it, so they buy HBO. It’s not about eyeballs, it’s that you know it’s a quality product.” The other channels like AMC saw this and knew they wanted that resonance as well, and it spread.

Wayward Pines premieres this week, May 14th on Fox. It is also based on the books series by Blake Crouch available now on Amazon.

Trailer:

In Philadelphia for his first Comic Con appearance ever,  Gotham star Ben McKenzie possibly spilled a big secret about season two of the show.

He slipped and told the crowd they would definitely be seeing the Joker next season.

ben1

Whether this slip was intentional or not, the actor spilled the beans on what is possibly a huge secret for next year. He also shared a lot more about the upcoming season.

McKenzie also said they would be getting away from the format this season and that two would be more serialized episodes. “We’re getting away from the who-dunnit of the week,” and that next season is “Really cool. If you like it now…just wait!”

He also expressed the same feelings that many fans shared with him during the Q & A section of the panel. “You kind of like the villains…you’ll see a lot more of them [in season two].” He said there would be even more of the villains we all know and love from the Batman timeline, especially seen through their parents, much like season one showed with Scarecrow.

When asked how it felt to follow up such an iconic portrayal of Commissioner Gordon by Gary Oldman, McKenzie said, “I had nightmares of Gary Oldman coming to my house..with a gun saying ‘You better just quit’.”Ben 2

Fans also asked about crossovers with some of the other DC shows, to which McKenzie replied that Gotham is a “totally unique world…and alternate reality.”

He was also asked which villains he would like to see in season two, which was when he spilled the beans on Joker. But he also pointed out that there are plenty more villains for them to use.

We’d love to hear from you! Which villain would you most like to see in season two of Gotham? Let us know in the comments!

He’s finally said it. People have debated, fought, angrily yelled at each other for years, and all it took was one fan approaching a microphone and asking.

Tonight at Wizard World Philadelphia, a fan walked up to the microphone and asked him a simple question, after admitting to hours of arguing with friends, on Facebook and even on discussion websites.

“In Sixth Sense, did Cole know Bruce Willis’ character was a ghost from the start?”

Without even hesitating, Shyamalan simply said straight-forwardly, solidly, without a doubt, a resounding “Yes! Of course!”

Wizard World Comic Con is starting up tomorrow in Philadelphia, and tonight was the press event, held at the always-classy Hard Rock Cafe. Such a fitting place to kick off the Philadelphia visit of so many famous actors, writers, artists and more.

The weekend started with Lou Ferrigno (The Hulk), Vincent Young (Beverly Hills 90210), and Chris 51 (Epic Ink). What an event! They had a Q&A with fans and everyone had a blast.

Some of the big events this weekend include Hayley Atwell and a panel on Agent Carter, David Tennant and Billie Piper doing a whole Doctor Who weekend, Katie Cassidy and Stephen Amell from Arrow, and so many more.

The one I’m most looking forward to, besides the Agent Carter panel, is M. Night Shyamalan’s Q&A and sneak preview of the first episode of Wayward Pines.

Keep checking back this weekend and throughout the next week for more from Wizard World in Philadelphia.

Roger Ma’s The Zombie Combat Field Guide, a Coloring and Activity Book for Fighting the Living Dead, came out this week and it’s a blast. Is it for adults? Is it for kids? This is tough to say, but anyone interesting in surviving the zombie apocalypse should check it out.

9780425278369H

Just like similar coloring and activity books, except maybe a bit more adult themed, this one has all kinds of fun pages.

For example…a zombie is attacking you and your first thought is to pull on hair to keep their mouth from chewing on your face. Good idea? Bad? Check it out:

the_zombie_combat_field_guide_3

Not only do you have fun coloring, you can also learn! Did you know the decomposed scalp would rip away so easily? Neither did I!

The book also assists in the zombie apocalypse decision making process with fun pages such as this one:

the_zombie_combat_field_guide_4

It’s never an easy decision…right?  These are just some of the really fun pages to check out.

The illustrations by Y.N. Heller are also awesome. It’s so cool seeing such graphic imagery in the format of a coloring book.

The book includes sections on physique, how the zombies attack, and some interesting tips and tricks. Plus, you get to color while you learn. Who doesn’t love coloring?

For ordering information, check out this link. The book is available now!

Geekscape author Dennis Finocchiaro covers everything from Legos to movies, and even writes his own stuff. Check out his collection of flash fiction that take place during the zombie apocalypse here.

Hector and the Search for Happiness is a film that sees Simon Pegg in a much more serious role, and he delivers.

Hector is a psychiatrist in need of some inspiration. His clients are boring him, he feels as though he is making no difference in life, and while he loves his girlfriend, he feels the need to explore the world for happiness. So he goes on a quest to ask people the question: What makes you happy?

images

His trip takes him all over the world, starting in China, where he meets a wealthy banker (played by Stellan Skarsgard) who shows him a night on the town. He visits Africa, where he meets up with an old friend and tries to help the poor, and has fantastic adventures. From there he visits an old flame, played by Toni Collette, and an old professor, played by Christopher Plummer.

imgres

What attracted me to this movie, first off, was that I read the book, and of course actor Simon Pegg. But if you’re expecting Shaun of the Dead kind of humor, you will be disappointed. It’s much more of a dramady. The casting also drew me to the movie, and the stars did not disappoint. Besides Pegg, Plummer and Collette, the film also included Jean Reno (The Professional, Mission Impossible) as a drug dealer in Africa and Rosamund Pike (Jack Reacher, Surrogates) as Hector’s girlfriend.

images

Overall, the film had its funny moments, of course, but was also quite deep and touching. If you’re in the mood for a feel-good film with a bit of comedy and adventure thrown in, this is your movie.

4/5 stars.

Hector and the Search for Happiness opens in theaters this Friday, September 26th. Here is the trailer:

It seems that everything Marvel does these days turns to gold, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. did not disappoint. After a slow start in the first few episodes, the show really picked up and became one of the better shows on television.

Unfortunately, when the season started, many fans of the films gave up on the show a bit quickly. While the show did start out a bit slow, those who persevered were not disappointed, especially once the season finale came around.

IAIN DE CAESTECKER, MING-NA WEN, CHLOE BENNET, CLARK GREGG, BRETT DALTON

The release of season one on blu ray will be the best chance for the quitters to come back and get into the show, and they should. With the addition of Marvel’s Agent Carter this year, the show will have even more exciting events take place, and will likely have many more crossovers within the Marvel Universe.

Season one had its share of crossovers. Thor’s Lady Sif came into an episode chasing after a war criminal from their world, and a few episodes tied directly into Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Not to mention many smaller mentions of characters, places and events from Avengers and other Marvel films.

Overall, the blu ray’s best draw for those who already watched the season is the abundance of extras. Five Behind-the-Scenes Field Reports are interesting views from the set of the show as it was being taped. A special effects breakdown shows how some of the cooler scenes were shot as well. The usual commentaries are there as well.

Agents-of-SHIELD-Coulson-Ward

And what season of television isn’t complete without a gag reel and deleted scenes? While I won’t divulge anything specific, there are a few hilarious moments, and the deleted scenes had me wishing they were able to keep some of them in the show. Also included is the airing of the first episode at San Diego Comic Con.

Overall, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season One is absolutely worth purchasing, whether you were a die-hard fan, curious, or you were one of those who gave up on the show a bit too early. The bonus features are outstanding, and the show, well obviously I loved the show.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is out now on Blu Ray.

If you walk up to Tom Cook’s booth at a convention, you won’t be able to help saying “This is my childhood. You animated my whole childhood.” When I did just that, he pulled out a notebook and added a notch. Turns out, he hears that a lot. Enough that he likes to keep a running count, just for fun.

He-Man. She-Ra. Scooby Doo. Flintstones, Jetsons, Captain Caveman, Roger Rabbit, The Smurfs…the list goes on and on. You name a cartoon from the 80s, and chances are, he drew for it.

Cook started out as a bus driver in Los Angeles, when he saw an ad for a comic book course taught by Don Rico, an illustrator for Hanna Barbara Animation. He saw Cook’s work and recommended he send some illustrations over to Hanna Barbara, where artists could take a free animation course with the recommendation of someone who worked there. They had plenty of people who could draw a character like Fred Flintstone, but they needed someone to draw realistic characters for the show Superfriends. He was hired and started out as an assistant.

He loved working for Hanna Barbara, but eventually he moved on; his favorite job was working for Filmation Studios. “That was a more relaxed atmosphere, no time cards, just come and go as you like, as long as you got your work done.

The main thing with Hanna Barbara was that they had a lot of the old artists from Disney who worked on the features I grew up with…getting to meet them was pretty cool.”

When Filmation closed it’s doors, Cook thought his time in the animation business was done. He then went to Mary Tyler Moore Studios to try to get a job, someone asked if he knew about the studio across the street, Baer Animation. It was run by an animator who had left Disney, and Cook ended up there next, drawing one of the most iconic animation characters ever, Mickey Mouse. “I got to work on some Disney products like Roger Rabbit and Mickey Mouse for Prince and the Pauper. So I didn’t have to work at Disney and still get to work on Disney products…and  everybody wants to work on Mickey Mouse because he was the first real cartoon.”

Prince

His favorite show to work on was Thundar the Barbarian. “Jack Kirby (comic artist and co-creator of Captain America) was one of the designers of the show, and it was more teenage than just [for] kids. It was a little bit more of and adult story line with a post-apocalyptic earth, and of course getting to meet Jack Kirby was great, too.”

The most challenging character for him was any of the women, because “if you don’t get the females just right they look horrible, so you had to be really particular when you drew Wonder Woman or She-Ra.”

she-ra-cast

I had to ask him about Filmation’s Ghostbusters, a cartoon from the 80s that seemed like a rip off of the film Ghostbusters, but it was really the other way around. “It was originally a live action show [in 1975] with the stars of F Troop…and we decided to do a cartoon version of it. In the meantime, we had sold the name Ghostbusters to Dan Akroyd so he could make his movie. The bone of contention was they called their cartoon The Real Ghostbusters, but we were the real Ghostbusters, they bought our name!”

Cook also worked on Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, and met Bill Cosby, whom he called a “frequent visitor” to the studio. “He was good friends with Lou Scheimer (voice actor for the show)…I met him a few times, but he usually came in to walk around, he did his schtick, it was always laughs when he came in…he was a really friendly, happy-go-lucky guy. It was always nice to see him when he came in.”

ghost_busters2

I asked Tom about cartoons today. His biggest disappointment is that they’re done overseas, and that they’re all done through computer animation. “You don’t really have to be able to draw anymore. It used to be, if you couldn’t draw, you couldn’t be an animator. Now if you know how to use a computer, it still doesn’t make you an animator, you have to know how things move. But it makes a lot of people think they can be an animator.” He said when he watches cartoons nowadays, they don’t always look like they’re moving realistically. He really misses the story lines of the cartoons he worked on, over the “stupid gags” many cartoons comprise of these days.

One of the few modern cartoons he likes is Spongebob Squarepants. “Other than that, some of the shows like Family Guy are too over the top. Sometimes they hit disgusting…they can be really clever, but then they go too far and it ruins the cartoon.”

When it comes to remakes, he isn’t a big fan either. He worked on over 100 episodes of He-Man and the Master of the Universe, and when the sequel came out, he didn’t even watch. “I heard enough about it. When they change everything and you’re a fan of this [the original] He-Man and you hear it’s going to be remade, you want it to be this He-Man. But they always change it up and for the most part they never do as good a job.”

he-man_and_the_masters_of_177_1280

During the interview at his booth, we were stopped on many occasions by people who, like myself, were in awe of this man and his work. As I said, he kept a running count of how many times he heard that from a fan in Philadelphia. I had to ask him what it was like being at a con where people come up to him and tell him how much his cartoons meant to them.

“It’s very humbling because I’m just a guy. I just happened to be lucky enough to work on this stuff. At the same time, it’s so nice that people really loved the stuff. I’m a fan of comic books, so I’m on the other side of the table talking to Stan Lee or Jack Kirby, so I can understand why they want my autograph, but at the same time I can’t understand why they want my autograph. So it’s surreal, but it’s very gratifying. It’s so nice to know that these cartoons have lived in these people’s lives and hearts for all these years.”

In the end, he easily had over fifty notches.

Here is part two of three posts including videos from the Doctor Who Panel from Saturday’s Philadelphia Comic Con.

First, a fan asks if it’s weird seeing their face on a t-shirt:

On this one, a fan asks Karen how much she had to do with Amy Pond’s wardrobe:

They were also asked about shooting in Central Park:

And finally, as promised, here they are talking about the best villains in Doctor Who, the weeping angels:

That’s it for segment two of the videos. Stay tuned for the third and final post of videos from Matt and Karen!

It was a long weekend, but I made it through. What a blast! Tonight I’m going to keep it simple and post some images of Cosplay from the show.

This was an amazing group. Some of them looked like the Doctor without the costumes!

I’ll be back as the week goes on with more Doctor Who panel videos and a few in-depth interviews!

This morning in Philadelphia, Matt Smith and Karen Gillan were shown just how many Whovians there are in the Philly area during a panel at Wizard World’s Comic Con Philadelphia. The crowd filled up the Grand Ballroom:

DSC_0097

It only took the crowd about a minute to realize that the duo’s roles in the show seemed so perfectly matched because of their real-life relationship. They got along like old, best friends. Here is the first few (of many) videos I will be posting from the event.

A fan asked about how much of their dialogue was improvised:

Drunk elephant:

Their first time on the TARDIS:

Another asked about any pranks they ever pulled on the set:

And, as promised, a fan dared them to sing the theme song to Doctor Who, with hilarious and fun results:

That’s it for today. I’ll be posting more videos from the Q&A, plus some other fun interviews from the con during the next few days.

I spent a quiet Thursday at Philadelphia’s Comic Con in Artist Alley. After talking to a group of very kind, friendly artists, I decided to walk around and ask them where they find their creativity and also about their creative process. I talked to people like Brahm Revel, who discussed his new project Guerrillas, Agnes Garbowska, artist for My Little Pony, and Arthur Suydam of Marvel Zombies and Walking Dead fame. I even got to talk to Mark Pingatore, an artist for Garbage Pail Kids. Here are some highlights from the chats:

Brahm Revel: Guerillas, Marvel Knight’s X-Men

“Inspiration just comes from everywhere; it’s how you see the world and see juxtapositions and match up what you like. I just try to stay open to what my mind’s doing or thinking. I try to take lots of notes. When I think something’s cool I jot down in my little notebook so I don’t forget it. I just try to be aware all the time of what I’m thinking about when I see something that I like that I think would be a good idea I jot it down so I have it for the next project.

As for my creative process, things just happen. Guerillas is about a platoon of chimps in Vietnam and about the one human that’s with them. It’s like Tarzan meets Platoon. It’s a human who kind of learns to become a man through fighting in a war with apes. The way I got that idea was I was watching a war movie and the way the platoon of humans were walking through a bombed out landscape reminded me of the way chimps walk in a line together when patrolling their turf, and it linked up and I had an idea for a comic.”

Agnes Garbowska: My Little Pony

“I’ve always loved drawing. I’m an immigrant from Poland and live in Canada now, and when I first came to the country I didn’t speak any English and I couldn’t go to school because I didn’t have my paperwork yet, so I watched a lot of cartoons. They were what inspired me to get into art because I was so hypnotized by all these characters on the screen that I started drawing them…and drawing them and drawing them every single day. And what turned into a hobby and passion of mine as a kid made me realize this was what I wanted to do as an adult so I started looking at traditional artists, comic artists, storyboard artists, an artist I could get my hands on. Everything around me inspired me and I started growing as an artist I went back to school started started practicing different techniques and now I draw ponies!

The shows I loved were Care Bears, the original My Little Pony, Captain Planet, Carmen Sandiego, so many cartoons inspired me. Then later on it was Powerpuff Girls, Fairly Oddparents.

I actually have an interesting creative process. When I start I do all my layouts digitally…once I have all my pencils completed, I print them out and light box and ink them traditionally. After they’re inked I watercolor them traditionally by only watercolor that tones. So basically I watercolor the shadows of the image. So that way I can scan it back into the computer, and then in Photoshop I can add the final digital colors. That way, I have the bright copy digital colors that still have that watercolor feel because underneath they have the watercolors, so the texture of the watercolors comes out, and that’s really the style I’m known for.”

MyLittlePonyFF06-cvrSUB-copy-0cbd6

Jeff Hewitt: The Ends

“The storyline [for The Ends] started as a role playing game about 25 years ago. My best friends and I did this game, and over the years we created a lot of source material, so I took all that and shaped it into a story that I wanted to tell.

I do photo manipulation, so the first thing I do is photography. I work out of a bank of five, six thousand photos, I cast people in parts, and then I sit down and pull from those [photos] and I write the book page by page and panel by panel.”

542365_204093759715388_1943933705_n_1024x1024

Chris Ehnot: Fallen

“When I get a project, such as a cover, there’s generally a theme that we have to work around, and creatively I’ll come up with a process that’s more concept art to come around that theme, after that I move onto the pencil stage. Once approved, I move onto the final piece and inking form.

When I’m doing my own project I usually go back and forth to get the final project done. When it’s personal it’s easier to work with, because once you come up with an idea, it’s easier to go to pencil and paper rather than just trying to solve what your client is trying to interpret from their own description.”

Fallen

Mark Pingitore: Garbage Pail Kids

“I collected the Garbage Pail Kids cards when I was younger, so I usually try to think back to the original spirit of the cards and try to capture that, but I also think of pop culture, sports and everyday life as an influence. I basically capture anything people can relate to.

I start out by roughing out quick sketches to get an idea down. I don’t get too detailed at first until I know that it’s going to go somewhere. Usually it’s rough at first.”

goonies_gpkcustoms

Arthur Suydam: Marvel Zombies, Walking Dead, Deadpool

“There are two guys who have all of the zombie stuff going on. Myself and Robert Kirkman got the whole zombies thing kicked off again.

There are essentially two of us [in the zombie business] who are classically trained, and I’m one of them. My training comes from The New York Academy of Figurative Art that was created based on note from Michelangelo, Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci and based on their notes from that period they rebuilt that same school in New York. I went there and the curriculum was 99% anatomy. You have to do a lot of autopsies on cadavers. I had to sculpt them, paint them and draw them and make casts of them. Put that together with watching horror movies, and I love comic books. Put that all together and this is what you get. Zombies.

I paint with everything traditional. I love wash, I love oils, pen and ink, and I think they should get rid of acrylics altogether, it’s a terrible paint and I don’t like charcoal because it gets all over the place. I get more of it on me than I do on the paper.

My family came over in the 16th century from Holland to open up a trading post, fought the Indian Wars on the Hudson because that’s where the trading post was, and that became New Amsterdam, which eventually became New York. Two of my great uncles, James and Henry, were both Hudson River painters. There’s a collection of about a dozen painters who after the civil war were American artists who got world recognition for the first time. After them there was another, who became known as an American architectural artist, and his work is hanging in the White House, there’s an entire wing devoted to him in a museum in New York and I’m the latest, and I do zombies.”

Dawn Griffin: Abby’s Adventures, Zorphbert & Fred

“My inspiration comes from anything, from animated movies, cartoons, TV shows, sitcoms, I’m quirky and funny, it’s kind of my schtick, so I think anything to have to do with cute and funny quick-type humor fits right in.

I used to work with a fountain pen, and I would scan it in and color it that way. But since I purchased a Gateway convertible laptop, it’s actually 100% digital at this point.”

ZF_Volumes1

Kurt Lehner: artist, Marvel, DC Comics, Designer of Disney’s Gargoyles, creator of Franklin the Turtle

“My inspiration comes mostly from my childhood, growing up as a fan. Basically loving everything we love about this business of superheroes and cartoons. My inspiration is the fans. I try to create pieces where the fans say “Oh my gosh I would really love to have that.” Stuff that you don’t see anymore. I’m more of a retro artist. I incorporate a lot of retro flavor into my pieces so that whether you’re a kid, adult or grandparent there’s something for everyone in my work because it has a modern flavor yet it’s old school.”

Coming up later in the week, I’ll be doing an in-depth interview with My Little Pony artist Agnes Garbowska, a story/interview with Tom Cook, who was an animator for pretty much every 80s cartoon you loved, an overview of a panel discussion with Marv Wolfman (writer of Fantastic Four, Blade and more) and will be posting some fun Cosplay photos. Stay Tuned! (Yes, Cook animated the cartoon parts of that film as well.)

Gargoyles_The_Complete_First_Season

Philadelphia’s Wizard World Comic Con is coming this week (June 19th-22nd), and there are all kinds of exciting events happening this year! I’m headed there (as well as fellow Geekscape writer Matt Kelly) to take in the sights, and this year’s con promises to be legendary (insert Barney Stinson reference here).

The biggest event, at least in my eyes, is the fact that Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith and Karen Gillan will be in attendance. Not only are the pair doing photo ops and signings, they are also having a panel discussion about being on Doctor Who.

Karen-Matt-matt-smith-and-karen-gillan-32113623-894-595

And while Gillan is there, she will be on a Q&A panel for Guardians of the Galaxy along with fellow Guardians stars Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), and Michael Rooker (Yondu). This should give fans some insight into the upcoming film that is sure to be a blast.

Along with Guardians, there will also be a panel discussing Captain America: Winter Soldier featuring Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Falcon) and Sebastian Stan (Bucky/The Winter Soldier).

sebastian-stan-winter-soldier-bucky-barnes-anthony-mackie-sam-wilson-the-falcon-captain-america-coming-to-philadelphia-comic-con-2

Not into time travelers or superheroes? How about horror? John Carpenter will be on hand for “Conversations with John Carpenter” which will undoubtedly give insight into the horror legend’s filmmaking career. The website says Carpenter “will greet fans, sign autographs, pose for photo ops and and conduct an interactive Q&A panel (Saturday, 4 p.m.) in which he’ll discuss his great films.”

Another interesting one is a screening of The Karate Kid, with Ralph Macchio. There’s nothing like watching a movie with one of the stars, right?

One of the bigger names at the show is Whoopi Goldberg. “Oscar® winner Whoopi Goldberg will make her Wizard World debut at Philadelphia Comic Con, June 20-21. With dozens of television and film credits, including “The View,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” Sister Act, The Color Purple, and a wide range of talents and accomplishments, Goldberg is known to millions as an actress, comedian, host, producer, author, activist, and singer-songwriter.

whoopi

Goldberg will greet fans, pose for photo ops, sign autographs and conduct an interactive Q&A entitled “A Drink With Guinan” (Saturday, 1 p.m.) at Pennsylvania Convention Center. She will appear on Friday evening and the full event day Saturday.”

Along with the usual cosplay contests, comic artists and more, this year’s show should be a blast. If you’re in the area, make sure you check it out! Be sure to head to Wizard World’s official website to get the low-down on everything else that you can expect this weekend!

Are you headed to Philadelphia Comic Con? What are you most looking forward to this year? Let us know in the comments.

To celebrate the official 30th anniversary of the film Ghostbusters, I will be putting together my new Lego Ghostbusters set, watching the movie, and sharing my top ten quotes from the film, in no particular order (mostly because I couldn’t choose which was my favorite!)

10. To start off, I’ve always loved the commercial, so it has to be in the top 10:

9. Easily Winston’s best line, and clearly one of the greatest in the film, finishes up this little scene when the boys are fighting Gozer:

Gozer: [after Ray orders her to re-locate] Are you a God?
[Ray looks at Peter, who nods]
Ray: No.
Gozer: Then… DIE!
[Lightning flies from her fingers, driving the Ghostbusters to the edge of the roof and almost off; people below scream]
Winston: Ray, when someone asks you if you’re a god, you say “YES”!

ghostbusters-party-birmingham

8. Another favorite is the scene in the mayor’s office with the infamous Walter Peck:

Ray: Everything was fine with our system until the power grid was shut off by dickless here.
Peck: They caused an explosion!
Mayor: Is this true?
Venkman: Yes it’s true. This man has no dick.
Peck: Jeez!
[Charges at Venkman]
Mayor: Break it up! Hey, break this up! Break it up!
Peck: All right, all right, all right!
Venkman: Well, that’s what I heard!

walter-peck2

7. And while I love all of the scenes between the possessed Dana Barrett and Venkman, I have to go with one of these two:

Dana: [as The Gatekeeper] I want you inside me.
Venkman: It sounds like you’ve got at least two or three people in there already.

Dana: There is no Dana only Zuul.
Venkman: What a lovely singing voice you must have.

There-is-no-Dana-only-Zuuuul-ghostbusters-5276781-1192-672

6. One of the more subtle quotes that always gets me:

Ray: Listen… do you smell something?

tumblr_inline_mgyu1t8rd91qdkc08

5. This line is just one of those iconic moments of the movie, so it had to be here:

Janine: Hello, Ghostbusters… Yes, of course they’re serious… You do?… You have?… No kidding! Just gimme the address… Oh sure, they will be totally discreet. Thank you!
[hangs up]
Janine: WE GOT ONE!

2rejh5f

4. Then there’s Stay Puft:

Gozer: The Choice is made!
Venkman: Whoa! Ho! Ho! Whoa-oa!
Gozer: The Traveller has come!
Venkman: Nobody choosed anything!
[turns to Egon]
Venkman: Did you choose anything?
Egon: No.
Venkman: [to Winston] Did YOU?
Winston: My mind is totally blank.
Venkman: *I* didn’t choose anything…
[long pause, Peter, Egon and Winston all look at Ray]
Ray: I couldn’t help it. It just popped in there.
Venkman: What? *What* “just popped in there?”
Ray: I… I… I tried to think…
Egon: LOOK!
Ray: No! It CAN’T be!
Venkman: What is it?
Ray: It CAN’T be!
Venkman: What did you DO, Ray?
Winston: Oh, shit!
[they all see a giant cubic white head topped with a sailor hat, Peter looks at Ray]
Ray: [somberly] It’s the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

cap_ghostbusters_cinebug_5

3. Of course, no list would be complete without the Twinkie:

Venkman: How’s the grid holding up?
Egon: Not good.
Winston: Tell him about the Twinkie.
Venkman: What about the Twinkie?

www.american-buddha.com_ghostbust.135d

2. The fantastic attack on Gozer:

Venkman: All right, this chick is TOAST. Okay; sticks?
Ray, Egon & Winston: HOLDIN’!
Venkman: Heat ’em up!
Ray, Egon & Winston: SMOKIN’!
Venkman: MAKE ‘EM HARD!
Ray, Egon & Winston: READY!
Venkman: Let’s show this prehistoric bitch how we do things downtown.

Ghostbusters_vs_Gozer_by_jhroberts

1. And of course, I’ve saved the best, most iconic line of the film, for last:

Venkman: He slimed me.

bill-murray-peter-venkman-ghostbusters

Of course, I’m sure some of you disagree, or feel I forgot some important ones. So feel free to comment with your favorite Ghostbusters quotes!

And for a little more fun, here’s a video:

When Lego released the new Lego Friends line, they started selling like crazy to girls, of course, but many adults (and even some of those girls) wondered why the colors were mostly pink and purple. When you look at the sets, they are very clearly for girls, and most boys would just say “ew” to them:

cafe

While sets like this one may have attracted some young girls, many already loved Lego. And yes, Lego was just trying to hit a new target audience they probably felt they were missing out on. But many were a bit upset that they seemed so incredibly girly. Then again, some people may not have even noticed this.

But then, with one of the Minifigures Mystery Pack series, they released a female scientist, and this brought them rave reviews. This got Lego thinking that maybe, just maybe, they were going about this all wrong.

And so, this past week Lego announced they were coming out with a new series of sets called Research Institute. The date is set for August 2014, and will include three sets that include a female minifigures working in the sciences.

It’s still unclear if this is what the final product will look like, but here’s a general idea of the set:

images

“The motto of these scientists is clear: explore the world and beyond!” said Swedish creator of the set Ellen Kooijman, who is herself a scientist. “As a female scientist I had noticed two things about the available LEGO sets: a skewed male/female minifigure ratio and a rather stereotypical representation of the available female figures,” she stated. “It seemed logical that I would suggest a small set of female minifigures in interesting professions to make our LEGO city communities more diverse.”

The set comes from Lego Ideas, formerly Lego CUUSOO, which brought us such great sets as the Back to the Future set and the Ghostbusters set, which just came out a week ago.

Personally, I am super-excited for these sets and will be buying them as soon as they come out.

Orange is the New Black has a new trailer, and it’s a spoof of the Arrested Development intro. It even has Ron Howard doing the voiceover!

As a huge huge HUGE AD fan, I love the idea, but I started watching Orange last season and have to say it has nothing in common with AD. But then, the new trailer makes me wonder if maybe I’m wrong.

The new season of Orange is the New Black will be available on Netflix starting June 6th. And yes, you can binge watch it.

Seth MacFarlane’s newest film, A Million Ways to Die in the West, is absolutely hilarious and covers every single persons’ sense of humor. Need a laugh? You should definitely see it.

Of course, like his show Family Guy, it has over-the-top, crossing-the-line humor throughout. Dumb laughs? Of course. Physical comedy? Quite often. Funny song? Check. Pop culture references? Duh! Sarcasm galore. Dirty humor. High brow laughs. And of course, it has its fair share of poop and fart jokes. This movie has laughs for everyone’s sense of humor, no matter what.

million-ways-to-die-in-the-west-trailer

What else really made the movie were the piles of cameos, both those that were spoiled for me (thank you so much, Internet) and the ones I somehow avoided by ignoring the trailers and spoilers. Some were random, others were completely planned out and precise, but overall each and every star who appeared in the film made it even funnier.

Even better? Sure I’m telling you to avoid the trailers, but much like those of Bad Grandpa, the Million trailers show parts of the funny scenes, but not the whole moment. The ice block scene? The shooting gallery? These are so much better in the film. Luckily, this is not one of those movies where all of the funny parts are given away in the trailer.

The actors were hilarious as well. Seth MacFarlane is always funny, but Charlize Theron doesn’t always get to be comedic and does an excellent job. Plus, with the likes of Giovanni Ribisi, Sarah Silverman and Neil Patrick Harris, you know it will be jam-packed with laughs.

amillionwaysheader

Plus, I have a feeling it has many “How did I miss that?” moments when watched a second time. Since I’ve only seen it once at a sneak preview, I can’t be sure…but I have a feeling that kind of humor was there too.

My only advice is to try your best to avoid spoilers. Don’t watch the extended trailers that are sure to start coming out. Don’t cross the “spoilers below” line in articles. And definitely don’t talk to your loud mouth friends who saw it before you. A lot of the humor relies on the surprise.

Overall, this movie gets 5/5 on the humor alone. See it as soon as possible! A Million Ways to Die in the West hits theatres on May 30th!

Late last night, Lego revealed a new, super-cool set that’s due out soon. It’s set 10244 and is called Lego Fairground Mixer.

Created by MDKGraphicsEngine - Licensed to LEGO System A/S

Here’s some information directly from Lego:

“The LEGO Group is bringing the thrill of the carnival via the announcement of the LEGO® Fairground Mixer this Saturday! The set was designed by renown product designer Jamie Berard and it perfectly encapsulates the typical experience at the fair just in time for summer. (Berard also designed the amazing CREATOR Sydney Opera House, Sopwith Camel, and the Tower Bridge sets.)”

It’s a really cool set for anyone who loves Legos and local fairs. It has a ride similar to the Tilt-A-Whirl, plus a bunch of stands. My personal favorites are the dunk tank and the strength tester:

dunkAlso super cool is the fact that the whole thing can be put onto the trucks for transport, just like a real traveling carnival:

Created by MDKGraphicsEngine - Licensed to LEGO System A/S Created by MDKGraphicsEngine - Licensed to LEGO System A/SWhile I love this set and will definitely be purchasing it when it comes out, it’s still not the coolest set I’ve seen. I still love the Lego DeLoreon and Lego Simpsons House more. But it’s a really fun set and I can’t wait to get it.

Here’s a video with the creator describing the set:

The new Seth Rogan film, Neighbors, delivers exactly what the trailers promise. If the multitude of previews and TV spots made you laugh, you should most definitely see this film.

In it, a married couple, played by Rogan and Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids, 28 Weeks Later), get new neighbors. The problem is, they’re a fraternity, led by Zac Efron (That Awkward Moment, Liberal Arts). Rogan and Byrne decide that they must discuss the possibility of noise and their newborn baby, head over to warn (while still seeming like the cool older couple) and end up partying with the frat.

Eventually, things go wrong and they end up in a feud with the frat house.

Rose-Byrne-and-Seth-Rogen-in-Neighbors-2014-Movie-Image-2

I have to say that I was worried this film would alienate the viewers with situations so upsetting that they couldn’t enjoy the film. Much like Identity Thief, which I couldn’t truly enjoy because of how much Jason Bateman’s life was affected, I was worried I would feel so bad for the family that I wouldn’t be able to even enjoy the film. But while writers Andrew Cohen and Brendan O’Brien did such a good job of making each character likeable in the film, they also created characters with a villainous side. Sure, they were all part of this horrible feud, but each one of them was also so human.

Zac Efron was awesome in this film. His character, while obsessed with becoming a legacy, was also so caring of his frat brothers. Yes, the trailer paints him as the villain, but there are plenty of humanizing moments for his character in the film. He also got to show his comedic side, and succeeded. And for those of you who are wondering, yes Efron takes his shirt off.

maxresdefault

The movie also used the baby in such comedic ways that I almost want to say that she made the film. Sometimes it was just simply the look the baby gave, and other times it was more about situational humor, but overall, the crowd laughed the hardest at the scenes with the baby.

If you want to go out and get the best laughs for your bucks, Neighbors is perfect. The humor ranges from drug to physical to situational, melding together to create a truly comedic masterpiece.

Grade: 4/5

Neighbors hits theaters May 9th. Watch the trailer:
