The road through development and production of Ron Howard’s Star Wars spin-off Solo was a rocky one to say the least. In fact, it wasn’t always the Academy Award winning director’s film. After rumors of chaos on set began to spread like wildfire, as well as rumblings of their displeasure with the lead performance from Alden Ehrenreich, original helmers Chris Miller and Phil Lord were eventually replaced by Howard after six months of filming. We’ll never know exactly how much influence each party had on the final product, and that includes The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi scribe Lawrence Kasdan, who returned to influence and pen the screenplay alongside his son Jonathan, but it’s crystal clear that Solo is a plagued and unnecessary addition to the Star Wars film universe.

A young Han Solo (Ehrenreich) becomes involved in his usual shenanigans after trying to rip-off a dangerous underground crime syndicate in order to escape the dreck of his home planet alongside his lover Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke). Unfortunate circumstances allow only Han to escape freely, as the daring pilot vows to earn enough money to buy his own ship and return back to the planet to reclaim his lover. While away, Han joins a band of thieves that put his life in danger as he’s forced to take part in a risky mission alongside franchise regulars Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover) that comes with deadly consequences.

At its core, a plot-driven and emotionless void swallows Ron Howard’s valiant attempt at saving this doomed project. Solo unravels like a safe and superficial checklist towards developing the character’s origins and bridging his connections to George Lucas’ initial trilogy. Throughout the film it becomes difficult pinpointing whether this lack of depth is caused by thinly written characters or weak onscreen portrayals, and that criticism even includes a personal favorite of mine, Woody Harrelson, who gives one of the most forgettable turns of his career. Yet, no matter where the blame ultimately lies, the sad truth is that the Star Wars saga will continue to follow in the money-printing footsteps of Marvel’s cinematic universe no matter how watered-down the overall product becomes. I’d also be remiss not to mention the loathsome qualities regarding this feature’s most significant droid, L3. Her sassy and progressive demeanor is both off-putting and annoying. The franchise’s newer droid character have been molded to create comic relief, however their increasingly over-the-top nature is beginning to get out of hand, a clear sign that “the powers that be” are grasping at straws.

Now, perhaps Solo was simply destined to fail, with warning signs and red flags popping up throughout the entire filmmaking process. Or there may be an even more troubling interpretation of this hollow and worthless inclusion, and the Star Wars franchise may be headed down a worrisome path that could ultimately sour the amazing foundation built by George Lucas over 40 years ago.

Variety has reported that the new director for the upcoming Han Solo movie is Ron Howard. The position was recently abandoned by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, leaving the fate of the Star Wars film in jeopardy. There was still several weeks of production left prior to the shift but Lucasfilm has now added an additional five weeks of reshoots onto the schedule. I suspect some portion of the original story will be lost, given the difference in directing styles (the original directors had a fondness for humor and improvisation – which may have lead to the decision to remove them from the project).

Ron Howard has worked with Lucasfilm in the past on Willow in 1988. Other credits include hits like Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind as well as flops such as Inferno and In the Heart of the Sea. The director will also be reuniting in this picture with actor Warwick Davis, who starred in Willow. Howard is set to begin working immediately.

What do you think of Lucasfilm’s decision?

Moby Dick is one of the greatest American novels I’m ashamed to say I barely remember. I was half-asleep that semester of sophomore English, and truth be told I was and still am a total idiot. At least now I have In the Heart of the Sea to look forward to!

Based on the book by Nathaniel Philbrick which in turn was based on the story that inspired Moby Dick and none of this is as convoluted as it sounds, In the Heart of the Sea is the newest biographical thriller (that’s a new one, thanks Wikipedia) from Oscar-winner Ron Howard. In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship the Essex was attacked by a big-ass whale. This event would later inspire Moby Dick, but In the Heart of the Sea follows the crew as they try to survive the aftermath. Shipwrecked, cold, hungry, and without wi-fi, they will be pushed to the limits and find out what it means to be human. Or something.

The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, and Ben Whishaw as novelist Herman Melville, who if I had to guess might survive the ordeal.

The movie will be released in IMAX and theaters on March 13, 2015 from Warner Bros.

Orange is the New Black has a new trailer, and it’s a spoof of the Arrested Development intro. It even has Ron Howard doing the voiceover!

As a huge huge HUGE AD fan, I love the idea, but I started watching Orange last season and have to say it has nothing in common with AD. But then, the new trailer makes me wonder if maybe I’m wrong.

The new season of Orange is the New Black will be available on Netflix starting June 6th. And yes, you can binge watch it.

It’s hard to discredit the extensive filmography of the Academy Award Winning director Ron Howard. On the other hand, it’s impossible to ignore a noticeable decline in the filmmaker’s work of late. That’s why the release of Howard’s newest feature, Rush, was initially surrounded by an enormous amount of skepticism. Yet, after a vocal outpouring of praise following its world premier in London and a screening at the Toronto International Film Festival, the doubters have all but faded.

Formula One racing took the world by storm in the 1970s. One major reason for its success was the highly publicized rivalry between speedsters Niki Lauda (played by Daniel Brühl) and James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth). Very different in their approaches, Lauda being known for his methodical commitment to the sport and Hunt living up to his reckless bad-boy reputation, these legends of racing faced off in one of the greatest Formula One seasons of all time.

After turning up my nose at its theatrical trailer and writing off Howard’s latest film as a mediocre offering in the vein of other recent works such as The Dilemma,Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code, it can be humbling to admit that you should never judge a book by its cover. It’s an understatement to call Rush a gratifying resurgence for the once heralded director. Instead, I’ll give the action-packed drama a more warranted description. Make no mistake about it, Rush is one of the year’s finest films. The full-throttle racing sequences wisely take a back seat to an even more impressive story. Screenwriter Peter Morgan pens a brilliant script that develops such interesting characters. But in addition to Howard’s stellar direction and Morgan’s well-crafted screenplay, Rush benefits from a breakthrough performance from its leading man Daniel Brühl. Although Hemsworth is undoubtedly the bigger household name, Brühl completely steals the film. Thanks to a fantastic collaborative effort that even stretches as far as Hans Zimmer’s immaculate score, Ron Howard’s Rush is a clear-cut winner.

rush2

The blemishes found in the feature are few and far between. With an ever-so-slightly bloated running time that barely surges past the two hour mark, there are a couple of lulls to be expected. However, as soon as you recognize a low-point in the film, Howard shifts gears and takes the movie in another direction. Furthermore, it’s undeniable that Niki Lauda’s character is far more intriguing and impressionable than James Hunt’s. Partially due to the fact that Brühl’s performance is superior and also because the writing and real-life story dictates as much. Consequently, it creates a small mismatch and imbalance to the film. But after really searching for criticisms and being overly picky, there’s no question that Rush‘s highs obviously outweigh its lows.

I’m man enough to admit when I’m wrong, and boy was I wrong! Rush has just about everything you can ask for in a great film. The racing scenes feel a bit lengthy, but they definitely get the adrenaline pumping. And Howard’s feature delivers a knockout story with plenty of effective dramatic moments. This is an excellent sports movie that stacks up well against the competition. Rush is one picture you won’t want to miss.

Back when Arrested Development originally aired on Fox, Carl Weathers appeared in three episodes playing a version of himself, who just so happened to also be Tobias’ hilarious acting coach. The upcoming season of the comedy is set to hit Netflix in 2013, and production the new season is already underway. But, what would season four be without the wisdom of Carl Weathers? Who would tell us we could get free refills at Burger King?! Well, thankfully for us we won’t have to worry. That’s right people…Carl Weathers will be back. David Cross revealed to Vulture that:

“All the old friends are back. Carl Weathers is back.”

And the rest of the old friends coming back? Well, that list includes Judy Greer, Henry Winkler, Scott Baio, Mae Whitman, Jeff Garlin, and Liza Minnelli. I’m pretty sure we all can’t wait until Arrested Development returns to us next year via Netflix.

Yesterday it seemed pretty unlikely that we would see the adaptation of Steven King’s The Dark Tower after Warner Bros. decided to pass on the ambitious project. This made Warner Bros. the second major studio to pass on the project. But it seems now that there is yet again hope for this adaptation. Deadline is reporting that Media Rights Capital is now in talks to take on The Dark Tower. Media Rights Capital is the company behind the funding of this summer’s Ted and the upcoming Elysium. Media Rights Capital’s co-founder, Mordecai Wiczyk, is said to have a strong affinity for novel series, and after Seth MacFarlane’s Ted was such a huge hit this summer the company is doing pretty well in the cash department. MRC has a distribution arrangement with Universal, who originally passed on it, but it’s unclear whether that studio would release the film or not. The main reason behind this film struggling for back is due to its plan to have three feature films as well as two limited television series. It’s a pretty unusual game plan but they do have Ron Howard set to direct and produce. Expect news to come soon after the deal goes down.

The big-screen adaptation of Steven King’s The Dark Tower has hit yet another setback, as Warner Bros. have chosen to pass on the project. Not too long ago news broke that the studio had commissioned a new script, and even had Russell Crowe expressing an interest in the lead role of Roland ‘The Gunslinger’ Deschain. There was a decision expected in the next few weeks and it appears that decision has been made and the dark tower isn’t going to be seeing the light of day at Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. are the second major studio to pass on the adaptation of King’s series of novels. Originally Universal were planning on taking the project on with Ron Howard set to direct. Imagine Entertainment is apparently still determined to find a studio, but it’s definitely not looking too great for this project right now. When Universal first let go of the film, most insiders around town believed Warner Bros. was its best chance of getting made.

Production on the new season of Arrested Development for Netflix begins tomorrow! It appears that the entire cast consisting of Jason Bateman, Jeffrey Tambor, Portia de Rossi, David Cross, Jessica Walter, Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Alia Shawkat and Tony Hale are all in final negotiations and expected to return. Each of the new episodes will focus on one member of the Bluth clan, although some episodes may feature multiple characters. Arrested Development will be in production through the fall.

The new season is set to be a bridge between the original series and the lon rumored Arrested Development movie. However the door is being left open to doing an additional season if the initial 10 new episodes prove successful. All 10 new episodes are set to be available on Netflix at the same time sometime in 2013 but no premiere date has been set yet.
