Briefly: With Comikaze 2013 now a fond memory (you have checkout out of coverage, right?) of all the good times that were had over this past weekend, we must look forward to the conventions of 2014.

The folks of the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo just announced that they are adding another day of entertainment filled excitement to their calendar. This will be the first year that the Calgary Expo will go for four days like Comic Con International which is very exciting. The 2013 Calgary Expo had numerous events beyond just the con going on, including a Weird Al concert, Dinner with Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey, and a cocktail party with the people of Torchwood (John Barrowman, Gareth David-Lloyd, and Eve Myles) and from the people I spoke with these did not disappoint.

Tickets for the Calgary expo have already gone on sale and they will start announcing guests on December 1st. Stay tuned and we at Geekscape will be sure to keep you in the loop!

Ever since it was announced that Netflix was developing a fourth season of the critically acclaimed series Arrested Development, fans everywhere have been eagerly awaiting its return. With the season launch just around the corner, Netflix has released the first trailer for us geeks to get our grubby little paws on.

Get your Cornballer ready; you can watch all 15 episodes starting May 26th. For now, watch the trailer below and let us know what you think!

Having started only eight years ago, the Calgary Expo is still a relatively new convention. In that time however, it’s come to be the second largest in Canada. This year the event sold out three weeks before the doors opened, and this is the second year in a row where tickets have sold out completely. Last year’s gathering was a bit more turbulent, as people who bought weekend or VIP passes couldn’t get in. From the people I spoke to over this past weekend, there were vast improvements from the previous year, but the Calgary Expo is still experiencing a few growing pains.

The home of the Calgary Expo is the BMO Centre on the stampede grounds. This year they expanded to include the Big Four building as well. Between the two buildings there were really three sections; the Big Four had registration, photo ops, and the gaming zone, while the BMO Centre had the show floor, panels, and the autograph/entertainment area. The two buildings were helpful in making the event a success this year, but there were still some problems. First, you would stop into the basement of the Big Four building to get your badge. From there they funnel you upstairs to where the gamer’s lounge and food court was. By doing this they were able to prevent people from trying to act like salmon by pushing through the crowds to get out. The only downfall with this was that the basement is also where they’re holding the photo ops which were all scheduled by times, which is all fine and dandy, but if your photo op was at a time when there was a line to get into the building, you weren’t getting in right away. The volunteers were pretty good about getting people who were in line to their photo op on time by pulling them out and bypassing the line altogether.

A major complaint about the expo in 2012, were the lines and utter disorganisation of it all. I’m pleased to say that it was fixed this year (but of course, there were still some issues). The show opened daily at 10:00, and on average there were about 6,000 people waiting outside to be the first to get in. This is common behaviour for all the cons I’ve been to, the only problem with this is that you lined up for what you wanted to see and there would be different lines for the different things to do. At the Calgary Expo they had two lines: one at each of the main entrances in the morning. There were enough entrances to have one for the panels that start at 10:00, one for the autographs, and one for the show floor. The organisers didn’t open the doors for the attendees until promptly at 10:00. I spoke with Lindsay who had arrived at 08:00 to try and get Nathan Fillion’s autograph; she was amongst the first 200 people into the autograph area and went right to the line for Nathan. When she arrived, the volunteers had shut down the line so she couldn’t get in it. The only people that were in line were the volunteers and people with press badges. These people were able to bypass the lines to get into the building and in turn get in line for autographs before the paying attendees even entered the expo. When the line cleared and the volunteers were letting people into it again, Lindsay said that she was able to get into the line, but shortly afterwards one of the volunteers told her and everyone else in line that they couldn’t line up yet. Immediately after they got output of the line the volunteers were letting people in again. Lindsay did eventually get into the line and finally received her autograph, but it took nearly an hour just to get into the lineup.

An important message from the Calgary Expo

The panels at the Calgary Expo were top notch; with over 50 guests including Stan Lee and Carrie Fisher, few expected them to be bad. A few announcements were made in Calgary, including Wil Wheaton revealing that he will be hosting another season of Second Watch. There were also a few firsts, including the first time the two ladies who have played Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton and Lena Headey) have ever met. For the most part, the panels in Calgary were just to get the fans close to the stars of their favourite shows and movies. In fact during the Q&A portion of the Game of Thrones panel one person asked for spoilers and got booed off the microphone. With the major panels aside from Game of Thrones, Supernatural, and Doctor Who, the rest were cancelled series or old movies, which isn’t a bad thing, as it allows fans to relive the experience of watching those shows and films. I would have loved to be at the Terminator panel just to see them all together again.

For the readers who have never been to a convention, the Calgary Expo is definitely a good starter con. As it gets older, it grows bigger and learns from the mistakes that it made each previous year. The calibre of stars that attend continues to get better and it’s no wonder that in its eight year history it has grown to be the second largest comic expo in Canada. I look forward to seeing the Calgary Expo grow over the next five years. Due to the BMO Centre’s capacity, I don’t foresee the Calgary Expo becoming the largest in Canada, but it’s well on its way to becoming the best.

Calgary Expo 2013 was in full-force during its second day! Fans returned in droves for plenty of presentations (including Arrow and Doctor Who panels), exhibits, and celebrity meetings. Russell once again donned his Geekscape press pass and his camera in order to garner even more awesome photos.

Check out the highlights from day two below (and day one here), and look for more Calgary Expo 2013 coverage soon!

Alberta announced today that it would follow suit with B.C. and give Bully a PG rating. The rating system in Canada is more or less the same as it is in the States (G, PG, 14A [PG-13], 18-A [R], and A [NC-17]).  The American MPAA “R” rating is similar to the Canadian “18A” category (under-18s admitted with adult accompaniment). The Canadian “R” category would be similar to the American NC-17 rating.  The Canadian ratings almost never follow the American counterpart, so it isn’t for a movie to get an R in the states and a PG or 14A in Canada.  Ratings are important for a movies success, but it seems the US doesn’t understand the necessity for movies like Bully to be seen by all ages. It’s more important for children to be seeing this movie than it is for adults being the only ones that can see it in the US.

A lot of us geeks were picked on and bullied growing up turning us into the bullies of the internet. Stop the cycle, adults aren’t the ones that can prevent kids from being bullied but this movie may help change the behavior of children if they get the chance to see it.

(Last) weekend was an extraordinary weekend for me; I went to WonderCon for the first time in my life.  For those of you that don’t know what WonderCon is I wouldn’t fret too much about taking that wrong turn at Google and coming here instead.  WonderCon is a comic convention run by the same group as Comic Con International in San Diego.  For those of you that don’t know me I’ve been a member of this site since it first began back in the holiday season of 2006.  I’ve read less comic books than I have fingers on a hand and yet I can name all the original members of the X-Men team having read only one X-Men trade paper back.  Before going to WonderCon I had only been to Comic Con in San Diego, I would always skip the one in Calgary because if I was going to a con I wanted to go to the big one.

The style and format of the two cons are practically the same but the main difference between the two is at WonderCon you don’t need to stand in line for hours to get into a panel room and then sit through a few panels that you care nothing about just to go to the panel that you want to be at.  On Friday I arrived at WonderCon around 1630 and got in line for the fancy WonderCon exclusive footage of Green Lantern.  The footage restored my faith that the movie could be pretty rockin’ but I still fear that it’s just going to get over hyped.  Promptly after the Green Lantern panel there was a screening of Green Lantern: Emerald Nights.  If you know practically nothing about the Green Lantern like myself then I’d have to recommend seeing this film it gives you a little insight into the history of some of the other lanterns that protect the universe.

The Second day of the WonderCon I was able to see the trade floor and check out all the different booth while taking a few pictures of the Cos-Players, I also got the chance to get my hands on  Kid Icarus and Zelda for the 3DS.  Both of the games look stunning and if either of the games were launch titles you would have required a pre-order just to get the system at launch.  I noticed the quality of Cos-Players at WonderCon were much better than those I saw at Comic Con.  I did see some bad ones too but I’d rather not remember them right now.  One of the best costumes I saw was the Alien:

A close second going to a Mord Sith from Legend of the Seeker:

With me not being so into comics a lot of the panels were not my thing so I didn’t spend as much time at them as I could have but the ones I did see kept me pretty interested.  I was able to make it into the Terra Nova; before going to this panel I knew nothing about it but after seeing it I’m über excited for it.  Terra Nova is a new series taking place in a future where the pollution has made it next to impossible to live on Earth any longer when the LHC rips a hole in the space time continuum creating a time portal to the prehistoric age.  The series is produced by the dinosaur guy himself Steven Spielberg and will be on Fox this fall, as it appears now I would recommending checking it out but I plan on attending the presumed panel at Comic Con in July and will have a better of the show and will report my finding after that panel.

I also had the pleasure of attending the Thundercats panel and this was the one panel that I was looking forward to the most during WonderCon.  I remember watching the series on Saturday morning cartoons, Brother, sister and I had the thunder lair and one of my friends had the thunder tank (I was so jealous of him).  I currently have the entire series on DVD and haven’t been this excited about a carton since seeing the adds for the Lion King.  At the panel they talked about the changes that they made to the series such as Thundara is no longer the planet the Thundercats come from, it is now the kingdom where they live on Third Earth.  All of our favorite characters will be returning in the series and Snarf will be returning too.  They said they made Snarf less annoying and more cute for this series.  Snarf will not be able to say anything other than is name and make cat like sounds that Lion-o can understand.  The villains will be more menacing in this series and wont be the three stooges of villains like they were in the first series with Mum-Ra pulling their strings.  The last thing they mentioned during the audience Q&A was that most of the large defining plot points in the original series will appear sometime in this series.

The last panel I sat in on was for Human Target; they showed us some “all new footage spliced together for WonderCon” which turned out to be clips from season two.  This series of clips made me think that season two hadn’t aired in the U.S. yet but then when the cast came on stage it was clear to me that it had aired and they were still trying to create buzz so that the show could be picked up for a third season.

The rest of the panel turned out to be them only talking about how they can be picked up for a third season and giving out Twitter hash tags so that we can let Fox know that there should be a third season.  They also decided what we should be sending Fox to get the series picked up for the third season.  I had enough of this so I decided to leave frustrated from that panel and go shopping on the floor instead.

Until the next convention, this Scapist is going back to his cave.
