The Last Boy Scout (1991) VHS Movie Review | VHS Box Art Front and Back

VHS Back of the Box Description
The Last Boy Scout is the Super Bowl of action movies, a flat-out blitz of excitement, blow-you-away special effects and hilarious gimme-five humor set against the world of pro football.

Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans star as a seedy detective and disgraced quarterback, teaming to dodge ambushes, fire off one-liners and bust chops. When the going gets tough, they get tougher. And funnier. They came to play. And to settle a score in this raging fireball where bigger is better, hits are harder and bad guys end up deader.

Sending in plays from the sideline are guys with experience screenwriter Shane Black (Lethal Weapon), producer Joel Silver (the Die Hard and Lethal Weapon films) and director Tony Scott (Top Gun). Along with Willis and Wayans, they ensure The Last Boy Scout isn’t like other films. Be prepared.

Trivia

  • ♦ Shane Black wrote this after struggling with Lethal Weapon 2 and a break up that triggered him to quit writing for almost two years:

“I was busy mourning my life and, in many ways, the loss of my first real love. I didn’t feel much like doing anything except smoking cigarettes and reading paperbacks. All things come around. Time passed, and eventually, I sat down and transformed some of that bitterness into a character, the central focus of a private eye story which became The Last Boy Scout. Writing that script was a very cathartic experience, one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I spent so much time alone working on that. Days which I wouldn’t speak. Three, four days where I maybe said a couple of words. It was a wonderfully intense time where my focus was better than it’s ever been. And I was rewarded so handsomely ($1.75 million) for that script, it felt like a vindication and like I was back on track.”

  • ♦ At the time this was a record purchase for an original screenplay ($1.75 million).

Joel Silver and Shane Black

Troubled Production

  • ♦ Joel Silver, Bruce Willis, and Tony Scott fought a lot on set. Silver was described as “insane, with long, horrible fits of sanity,” and was compared to a fighter pilot riding as a passenger. “As soon as you hit a little bit of turbulence, he’s right away going to throw the guy out of the window and take over the steering.”

  • ♦ The original cut for “borderline unwatchable.”

  • ♦ Bruce Willis and Damien Wayans DID NOT like working with each other.

  • ♦ Assistant director James Skotchdopole (a fantastic second unit director, True Romance, and Untouchables) attributed the tension on-set to an “overabundance of alpha males on that project. Bruce was at the height of his stardom, so was Joel, so was Tony and so was Shane. There were a lot of people who had a lot of opinions about what to do. There were some heated, early-Nineties, testosterone-charged personalities on the line. It was a ‘charged environment,’ shall we say.” Writer Shane Black had to wrestle with the script. “I was forced to do more rewriting on that movie than on anything else I’ve done. There was tremendous pressure from the studio to get Bruce Willis and have this be a follow-up to Die Hard. He was reluctant, and rightly so: ‘This whole movie is about me saving my wife. I just did that in Die Hard.’ So they said, ‘OK, let’s minimize the wife, and while we’re at it, add a big finale.’ There was a general pressure to make somehow more significant and better!

  • ♦ Different editors were hired in an attempt to address Scott’s tendency for filming excessive coverage with multiple cameras. Editor Mark Helfrich (Predator and Rush Hour) described sorting through “mountains of raw material” to edit the first cut: “There was more footage shot for The Last Boy Scout than on any film I had ever worked on.”

  • ♦ Expert action movie editor Mark Goldblatt (The Terminator/T2 and Starship Troopers) recalls it as one the most painful and frustrating experiences of his entire career and refuses to discuss it in interviews. Although, he did mention in a podcast interview that several other editors were hired and then fired before him and that Warner Bros. began testing the movie before it was finished.

  • ♦ When editor Stuart Baird (Superman and Lethal Weapon) was hired, the film finally took a positive turn. Baird had been brought in to help re-edit other troubled productions, including Tango & Cash (1989) and Demolition Man (1993). He got the film edited down NC-17 to R with quick cuts away from the hardcore violence.

Nominated for two MTV Awards
Best Action Sequence – For the helicopter blade sequence (Won by L.A. Freeway Scene – Terminator 2: Judgment Day)

Best On-Screen Duo – Bruce Willis & Damon Wayans (Won by Dana Carvey and Mike Myers – Wayne’s World)

Shane Black’s footprints have been scattered all throughout Hollywood for over three decades now. And when you realize just how overlooked this versatile beacon of creativity has become over years, it can’t possibly be a byproduct of his astonishing body of work. Black’s first taste of success came on the heels of his hilarious buddy cop screenplay, Lethal Weapon. From there his uncanny ability to craft a story and continued notoriety as a writer finally guided him to the director’s chair for impressive films like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys, only to have his career come full circle in 2018. One of Black’s first career credits comes as an actor in the 1987 action-horror, Predator, which the filmmaker finds himself rebooting 30 more than years later.

Within the muddy waters of this shared film universe, a decorated sniper (Boyd Holbrook) encounters an alien Predator who’s crashed his spaceship in the backwoods of Mexico. And after the soldier sends some of these other-worldly devices back to his autistic son (Jacob Tremblay) living in Georgia, the boy’s unique perspective allows him to crack the foreign code and reboot the alien weapons. Unfortunately, this chain of events signals an even more diabolical species of Predator that travels all the way to Earth to reclaim its prized technology.

Summer may be gone, but 2018 certainly has room for one of its most well-constructed blockbusters with Shane Black’s The Predator. Re-booting a franchise can be a tall order, yet Black’s passion for the subject matter and dark comedic wit inject life into this energizing popcorn flick. And although some loyalists to the film universe may have hoped for a few more call-backs to its predecessors, The Predator occasionally acknowledges its origins all while serving up a plethora of trademark gory massacres and heavy doses of action. Black’s colorful dialogue becomes delivered brilliantly by an extensive collection of secondary actors who help sell the film’s strongly written misfit comedy angle. In fact, the effort’s surprising lack of star appeal isn’t problematic whatsoever, thanks in large part to these relatively unknown performers who work in complete cohesion to generate an authentic and engaging thrill ride. Fans of Keegan-Michael Key (Comedy Central’s Key and Peele) won’t be disappointed either, as he crushes every scripted (or perhaps even non-scripted) joke. Yet, all of these quality aspects are weakened by an untypical inadequacy with Black’s screenplay. Pacing is a bit of a problem, as the film races out of the gate until it becomes completely lost in a meandering mid-section that eventually discovers a desperate need to abruptly wrap things up. However, all in all there’s more good than bad in Shane Black’s gratifying return to an iconic horror villain with his new release, The Predator.

Briefly: Finally, The Rock has confirmed his collaboration with Shane Black!

It’s not a role in the anticipated Predator film as many fans were hoping, but it might be even cooler. Johnson today took to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to reveal that he’d in fact be playing the Man of Bronze himself, Doc Savage.

Here’s the announcement, straight from the man himself:

It’s OFFICIAL: For all comic book fans you already know the world’s first superhero (pre-dating Superman) is the “Man of Bronze” himself Clark “Doc” Savage.

Want to thank my bud director/writer Shane Black and his writing team Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry for flying in from LA and sitting with me and our Seven Bucks Productions’s producer Hiram Garcia on this Memorial Day weekend to chop up creative and break story on this very cool project.
Comic book fans around the world know that the cool thing about “Doc” Savage is that he’s the inspiration for Superman. First name Clark, called “Man of Bronze”, retreats to his “Fortress of Solitude” in the Arctic etc etc.

Doc was physically and mentally trained from birth by his father and a team of scientists to become the perfect human specimen with a genius level intellect. His heightened senses are beyond comprehension. He can even identify a women’s perfume from half a mile away. He is literally the master of everything.
But here’s the #1 reason I’m excited to become Doc Savage.. HE’S A F*CKING HILARIOUS WEIRDO!

Confidently, yet innocently he has zero social graces whatsoever due to his upbringing so every interaction he has with someone is direct, odd, often uncomfortable and amazingly hilarious.

After speaking for hours w/ Shane Black I can see why the creator of Superman took only the best parts of Doc Savage and leaving the “weirdo” part behind. But to us, it’s that “weirdo” part that makes Clark “Doc” Savage dope! Can’t wait to sink my teeth into this one of a kind character.
‪#‎ItsOfficial‬ ‪#‎WorldsFirstSuperhero‬ ‪#‎GeniusIntellect‬ ‪#‎PhysicalSpecimen‬ ‪#‎FnLoveableWeirdo‬ ‪#‎DocSavage‬

He sounds excited as hell, doesn’t he?

Are you looking forward to Black’s Doc Savage film? Be sure to let us know in the comments below, and we’ll be sure to share more news as it comes in!

DocSavage

Considering Shane Black broke into the the industry as the writer of the 1987 buddy-cop comedy, Lethal Weapon, there’s no surprise that he’s returning to his roots for his third directorial effort, The Nice Guys. I’ve been on record speaking out against Black’s previous entry as the visionary behind Iron Man 3, but I’m thrilled to see him transitioning back to a place of comfort. Black first stepped behind the camera for 2005’s wildly acclaimed caper comedy, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and more than a decade has passed since, Yet, Black’s able to rediscover his winning formula with a new pair of leading stars, Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling.

Set throughout 1970s Los Angeles, Jackson Healey (Crowe) is an enforcer who makes problems go away. And when a fearful young client named Amelia goes missing, Healey must team up with a binge-drinking private investigator named Hollard March (Gosling) to locate the girl. But as they dig deeper into the mystery, Healey and March become entangled with dangerous mobsters, porn stars and high-ranking government officials.

nice1

The Nice Guys stands as a refreshing new buddy comedy that delivers well-earned and cleverly crafted jokes. There is no shortage of laugh out loud moments, all of which solidify Shane Black’s latest film as a clear-cut winner. Gosling and Crowe have a natural chemistry that allows the humor to flow naturally. Their characters possess contrasting personalities that perfectly complement one another. Gosling as the clumsy and more unprofessional investigator, and Crowe as the brute muscle who operates under a strict unwritten code of the industry. In addition to a fine script that allows for the film’s talented leads to work their comedic magic, The Nice Guys has another surprising talent emerge from all of its splendor. Normally the overuse of a teenage character can be a hindrance to a movie, yet Black brilliantly incorporates newcomer Angourie Rice into the story. As Holland March’s daughter and voice of humanity in the film, Rice sets herself apart as a valuable asset. Each of these glowing attributes come together masterfully in one of 2016’s finest efforts.

nice2

Although the film’s laughter and light-heartedness keep a positive and energized tone throughout its duration, The Nice Guys does manage to struggle in a few key areas. The overall mystery of their case lacks depth and unpredictability. Furthermore, many of March and Healey’s big breaks are discovered by luck and sheer chance. Black’s work could have used a little more investigative wit to counterbalance all of the film’s accomplished comedy. And finally, The Nice Guys merely skims over any dramatic elements that it introduces. As a result, the film’s characters appear cartoon-ish and one dimensional. Perhaps a slightly deeper dive into their personal lives would have gone a long way. Instead, we’re left with a hysterical and effective caper comedy, but very little more.

Needless to say, Shane Black has another winner on his hands. Acceptable doses of action, mystery and hilariously scripted humor come together to deliver a wildly entertaining film. The Nice Guys doesn’t break any barriers or demand a place on the Mount Rushmore of buddy comedies, but it definitely makes for a worthwhile movie experience. If your in need of some genuine laughs and an engaging couple of hours at the movies, then you certainly won’t regret taking a chance on Shane Black’s latest entry.

Briefly: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was actually pretty cool, but I have a hard time thinking about anything other than Iron Man 3 when I think of director Shane Black.

Somehow, I was unaware that Black had been tapped to direct the next Predator film, and while I’ll definitely reserve judgement until I see the feature, I just hope that it doesn’t feel like a weird, crappy buddy cop comedy (or like any sort of comedy, really).

The very first teaser image for the sequel has just hit the web, noting a probably title of The Predator (having just one Predator again would be freaking awesome), and that ‘You’ll never see him coming’. The script is coming from RoboCop 3 writer Fred Dekker.

The project is still shrouded in mystery (or some sort of cloaking device) at this point, but we’ll be sure to share more The Predator news as soon as it hits the web. For now, take a look at the teaser image below, and be sure to let us know what you think!

Predator

UPDATE: While initial reports said that Black’s Predator film would be a reboot, Black says otherwise.

Speaking with Collider, Black said “Why start over, when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine?” He went on, stating that he wasn’t generally a fan of reboots, but could “really get behind inventive sequels” and that he likes “the idea of expanding and exploring the existing Predator mythology, rather than hitting the restart button.”

I’m definitely a fan of this idea, rather than a reboot of the entire franchise, though I still don’t know how I feel about Black in the driver’s seat.

Head below for the original post, and let us know what you think of the news!

ShaneBlack

Briefly: Because everyone loved Iron Man 3 so much, Fox has turned to its writer/director Shane Black to helm a Predator reboot.

Yep, reboot. So it looks like 2010’s Predators didn’t count (it was okay).

Black’s Monster Squad co-writer Fred Dekker is set to write the script, and one of the original film’s producers, John Davis, will also produce the reboot.

No other info on the project has been revealed as of yet, but we’ll be sure to fill you in as soon as we hear more! Are you down for a Predator reboot? Or did you like where things were going with Predators? Sound out below!
