Considering Shane Black broke into the the industry as the writer of the 1987 buddy-cop comedy, Lethal Weapon, there’s no surprise that he’s returning to his roots for his third directorial effort, The Nice Guys. I’ve been on record speaking out against Black’s previous entry as the visionary behind Iron Man 3, but I’m thrilled to see him transitioning back to a place of comfort. Black first stepped behind the camera for 2005’s wildly acclaimed caper comedy, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and more than a decade has passed since, Yet, Black’s able to rediscover his winning formula with a new pair of leading stars, Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling.

Set throughout 1970s Los Angeles, Jackson Healey (Crowe) is an enforcer who makes problems go away. And when a fearful young client named Amelia goes missing, Healey must team up with a binge-drinking private investigator named Hollard March (Gosling) to locate the girl. But as they dig deeper into the mystery, Healey and March become entangled with dangerous mobsters, porn stars and high-ranking government officials.

nice1

The Nice Guys stands as a refreshing new buddy comedy that delivers well-earned and cleverly crafted jokes. There is no shortage of laugh out loud moments, all of which solidify Shane Black’s latest film as a clear-cut winner. Gosling and Crowe have a natural chemistry that allows the humor to flow naturally. Their characters possess contrasting personalities that perfectly complement one another. Gosling as the clumsy and more unprofessional investigator, and Crowe as the brute muscle who operates under a strict unwritten code of the industry. In addition to a fine script that allows for the film’s talented leads to work their comedic magic, The Nice Guys has another surprising talent emerge from all of its splendor. Normally the overuse of a teenage character can be a hindrance to a movie, yet Black brilliantly incorporates newcomer Angourie Rice into the story. As Holland March’s daughter and voice of humanity in the film, Rice sets herself apart as a valuable asset. Each of these glowing attributes come together masterfully in one of 2016’s finest efforts.

nice2

Although the film’s laughter and light-heartedness keep a positive and energized tone throughout its duration, The Nice Guys does manage to struggle in a few key areas. The overall mystery of their case lacks depth and unpredictability. Furthermore, many of March and Healey’s big breaks are discovered by luck and sheer chance. Black’s work could have used a little more investigative wit to counterbalance all of the film’s accomplished comedy. And finally, The Nice Guys merely skims over any dramatic elements that it introduces. As a result, the film’s characters appear cartoon-ish and one dimensional. Perhaps a slightly deeper dive into their personal lives would have gone a long way. Instead, we’re left with a hysterical and effective caper comedy, but very little more.

Needless to say, Shane Black has another winner on his hands. Acceptable doses of action, mystery and hilariously scripted humor come together to deliver a wildly entertaining film. The Nice Guys doesn’t break any barriers or demand a place on the Mount Rushmore of buddy comedies, but it definitely makes for a worthwhile movie experience. If your in need of some genuine laughs and an engaging couple of hours at the movies, then you certainly won’t regret taking a chance on Shane Black’s latest entry.

Briefly: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was actually pretty cool, but I have a hard time thinking about anything other than Iron Man 3 when I think of director Shane Black.

Somehow, I was unaware that Black had been tapped to direct the next Predator film, and while I’ll definitely reserve judgement until I see the feature, I just hope that it doesn’t feel like a weird, crappy buddy cop comedy (or like any sort of comedy, really).

The very first teaser image for the sequel has just hit the web, noting a probably title of The Predator (having just one Predator again would be freaking awesome), and that ‘You’ll never see him coming’. The script is coming from RoboCop 3 writer Fred Dekker.

The project is still shrouded in mystery (or some sort of cloaking device) at this point, but we’ll be sure to share more The Predator news as soon as it hits the web. For now, take a look at the teaser image below, and be sure to let us know what you think!

Whoa. On Tuesday, December 8th Marvel teams up with Amazon on an exclusive offering to knock your Captain America socks clean off! The Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase Two collection drops only on Amazon with all new bonus content, film replicas and more. In addition, each film features custom disc sleeves from artist Matt Ferguson.

Geekscape got a sneak peek at these alternate covers to share with you—and they’re freaking awesome. Go ahead feast your eyes and start squirreling away your pennies!

This collection is not messing around—it doesn’t seem like this is going to be the “pretty good one,” only to be replaced next year by the “super awesome edition.” This collection already has all the goods I look for in my film collecting proclivities—and then a little more! I ended up buying a 3D TV several Black Fridays ago when it was the same price as the standard model and I’ve been enjoying it ever since. As a result, if a movie I want comes out on Blu-ray and there’s a 3D version—that’s the one I buy. That and so much more is already baked into this collection! In their own words:

The limited edition, 13-Disc Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase Two Collection invites you to hold the greatest power in the cosmos in your grasp – an orb containing one of the legendary Infinity Stones! Plus Blu-ray 3D™, Blu-ray™ and Digital Copies of all Phase 2 films, in collectible packaging designed by artist Matt Ferguson. This set overflows with stunning Marvel memorabilia, including a gold-foiled page from the book of Dark Elves, an ancient drawing from the Morag vault, Avengers and S.T.R.I.K.E. uniform patches, a replica of the Tony Stark Tattoo from Marvel’s Iron Man 3, and much more!

I mean, come on!—there’s a freakin’ ancient drawing from the Morag vault! What more can you possibly ask for?!

Personally, there were some moments I didn’t fully connect with in this film collection—but honestly, I take the blame on those for the time being. Maybe I was in the wrong mood when I saw them or something—planning to give Iron Man 3Thor: The Dark World and Avengers: Age of Ultron further viewings before making my final call on them. (Especially after getting a better understanding of what went into this intricate web Marvel is weaving as best they can during this release event.) However, here’s the thing—even if every film isn’t up to the snuff of say, Guardians of the Galaxy, they’re still better than most other offerings in their genre; meaning—you can’t lose, even if you lose, with these films. You will be properly entertained come hell or high water!

This unveiling comes properly on the heels of the release of the premiere trailer for the first film in Phase Three, Captain America: Civil War, this week. Whoowhee!—that trailer’s some dramatic adrenaline right there.

Yesterday, the calendar turned to May and the summer blockbuster season wasted no time getting started with the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron. After its 2012 origin film amassed the third largest worldwide box office total of all-time, all eyes were on Joss Whedon’s enormously anticipated sequel. Unfortunately, though, this follow-up feature falls well short of the charm and frenetic thrills evident in the first installment.

The film opens with the Avengers doing what they do best, taking down a crime syndicate with remarkable ease. That is, until a pair of “enhanced” siblings (Godzilla‘s stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen) reveal their superhuman abilities, unmatched speed and deceptive mind-control. Eventually, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) retrieves what they’re after from the mission and discovers its ability to produce highly advanced artificial intelligence. Without the approval from his team Stark creates Ultron, an experiment that goes terribly wrong. The evolved A.I. denounces his maker and joins forces with the enhanced siblings, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, to destroy the Avengers.

avengers1

Cluttered and unfocused, Age of Ultron falls apart in many different areas. Whedon and company effectively mastered the balance of a star-filled story in this film’s predecessor. However, more isn’t always better as Whedon struggles to keep things fluid with the addition of many, and I do mean many, new characters. Displaying an unnatural flow throughout the movie, things get even worse once the script takes a strange turn by diving deep into the personal stories of its characters. Where the original successfully glazes over each hero’s backstory and jumps right into the action, Age of Ultron ventures further into their psyche thanks to the Scarlet Witch’s mind tricks. With each of these developing drama-filled plot lines, the minutes continue to mount and the pacing becomes crippled.

avengers 2

In addition to an unnecessary change of course in the script and an overabundance of characters, Age of Ultron‘s action sequences are extremely drawn out and exceedingly unwarranted. If you thought 2013’s Man of Steel was flooded with obnoxiously destructive scenes, just wait until you feast your eyes on this film. The damage is beyond catastrophic and it makes the Avengers feel less like heroes and more like ticking time-bombs. And finally, Age of Ultron does a huge disservice by completely mishandling its chief villain and title character. Forced into sharing screen time with each and every main character – and there are plenty of them – Ultron becomes an overlooked antagonist who never grows into the monstrous adversary this franchise deserves. Although his mishandling isn’t as big of an abomination as Sir Ben Kingsley’s the Mandarin in Iron Man 3, it’s a lot closer than any of us would desire.

At its core, Age of Ultron attempts to stick to the same philosophy that’s been working for all of the Marvel films, tons of comedy and action. But despite achieving a good deal of laughs, albeit at a less impressive clip than the original, the film suffers in far too many areas to sustain its winning formula. With grand expectations Joss Whedon seemingly got suckered into the “bigger is better” mindset. Perhaps, Age of Ultron would have benefited more from a slightly scaled-down approach.

Prepare to hold onto your seats for one of 2014’s finest summer blockbusters. As Marvel continues to expand its universe and bring these stories to the big screen, its latest adaptation, Guardian’s of the Galaxy, is funnier than 22 Jump Street and more action-packed than Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. For many moviegoers, Guardians will represent the quintessential blockbuster experience. Yet, even for the non action-lovers like myself, the film is one hell of a good time.

After losing his mother to cancer and being abducted by a space ship full of outlaws as a boy, a much older Peter Quill (played by Chris Pratt) ventures throughout the galaxy listening to an old mix tape on a walk-man and stealing anything he can get his hands on. Yet, when he stumbles across a powerful orb on an abandoned planet, Peter (aka “Star-Lord”) becomes the target of an evil villain named Ronan. And once Ronan gains possession of the orb and intends to use its powers to destroy the entire galaxy, Peter must band together with a group of misfits to save everyone from annihilation.

As someone who laughed-off the trailers and buzz surrounding James Gunn’s latest effort, Guardians of the Galaxy, I’m here to admit that I was wrong. Gunn delivers a triumphant feature that surpasses even the overly-adored 2012 cash-cow, Marvel’s The Avengers. Leading star Chris Pratt has always been a comical genius and someone I’ve admired for quite some time. Stealing the spotlight in past works such as Delivery Man and 10 Years afforded Pratt the opportunity to seize a money-printing franchise such as this, and he does so with ease. The humor is legitimate and Pratt isn’t the only one cracking jokes. Bradley Cooper, who offers his voice for the cunning raccoon, Rocket, does a fantastic job of infusing comedy into the film as well. But in addition to a multitude of laugh-out-scenes, Guardians of the Galaxy conjures up a cohesive and entertaining story that isn’t bogged down by an action-overdose. Unlike other recent over-the-top blockbusters such as Man of Steel and Iron Man 3, who attempted to replace substance with artificial action, the chase scenes and special effects are very tasteful and properly placed, making Guardians of the Galaxy a fine summer blockbuster for all types of audiences.

galaxy2

Although I give James Gunn’s superhero flick a validated endorsement, it fails to begin and end without the occasional hiccup. Zoe Saldana’s character, Gamora, is clearly the weakest link. Yet, she becomes a necessary evil that we’ll gladly take in order to enjoy the rest of the experience. Furthermore, Guardians of the Galaxy constantly employs an unforgivable trait in movies, Gunn and the rest of his writers make up the rules as they go along. Without any prior explanation or understanding of the characters and their situations, important plot elements are sprung onto the audience in order to provide a smooth transition to the next scene. This is a sign of lazy writing and development that’s hard to overlook. Therefore, Guardians is a winning effort that definitely has its flaws.

If you’re still seeking out a successful summer blockbuster, look no further than James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. As the Marvel universe continues its expansion, I become more and more impressed with what they have to offer. A commitment to an engaging story through the use of comedy and appropriately measured amounts of action feel like a recipe for success, and one that’s clearly evident with Guardians of the Galaxy.

UPDATE: While initial reports said that Black’s Predator film would be a reboot, Black says otherwise.

Speaking with Collider, Black said “Why start over, when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine?” He went on, stating that he wasn’t generally a fan of reboots, but could “really get behind inventive sequels” and that he likes “the idea of expanding and exploring the existing Predator mythology, rather than hitting the restart button.”

I’m definitely a fan of this idea, rather than a reboot of the entire franchise, though I still don’t know how I feel about Black in the driver’s seat.

Head below for the original post, and let us know what you think of the news!

ShaneBlack

Briefly: Because everyone loved Iron Man 3 so much, Fox has turned to its writer/director Shane Black to helm a Predator reboot.

Yep, reboot. So it looks like 2010’s Predators didn’t count (it was okay).

Black’s Monster Squad co-writer Fred Dekker is set to write the script, and one of the original film’s producers, John Davis, will also produce the reboot.

No other info on the project has been revealed as of yet, but we’ll be sure to fill you in as soon as we hear more! Are you down for a Predator reboot? Or did you like where things were going with Predators? Sound out below!

Worried that with his contract coming to an end it would mean that Robert Downey Jr. would be hanging up his helmet? It’s definitely going to be hard to see any other actor fill the role after he finally does but don’t worry just yet. RDJ appeared on The Daily Show and revealed to the audience that he is currently renegotiating his contract at the moment with Marvel which means we may see a few more outings with him as the armored avenger in the future. Check out the interview below as well as a short clip from the film.

While attending the Hollywood red carpet premiere of Shane Black’s Iron Man 3, Yahoo Movies caught up with Joss Whedon and a took a few minutes to discuss the highly-anticipated 2015 sequel to The Avengers.

“I have actually finished a draft, we’re in a very good place. It’s going really well, eventually somebody will explain to me that it’s not. But I’ve been writing, meeting with actors, and we’re starting to storyboard and all the preliminary processes. This is the part where it’s all still fun. It’s an evolution, and that goes on all through shooting and it never stops. I’ve done enough shows and movies to be comfortable with that. You do come to a point where we all agree …‘Oh, I’ve got these two characters, two of my favorite characters from the comic books; a brother/sister act. They’re in the movie, that’s exciting.’ You lock certain things in. But then there’s a certain fluidity when you’re working with Robert [Downey Jr.]. He’s going to want to do something new on the day, and you’re going to want him to, because it’s going to be funny. So you always keep yourself open. I try not to think of it as topping The Avengers, I try to think of this as its own movie.”

“And by the way, Shane [Black] not helping! Iron Man 3 not helping! I see this and said, ‘Aw, man, he really got it right!’ The pressure continues! When Tony sees another superhero, he increases his swagger. Tony, he sees Thor, and he says, ‘Yeah, I got a suit of muscles that big. I invented it! Oh, you can pick up a hammer? You’re so special!’ He sees it as a challenge! He loves it.”

The most interesting point of this conversation was the two new character additions that Whedon mentioned. If he’s talking about actual siblings, could we see the inclusion of Wanda & Pietro Maximoff, better known as Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver? It’s already been revealed that their rights are up in the air and whichever studio, Fox or Marvel, uses them first gets first dibs. However, there are a handful of other characters that this could be implying as well. Ah, the many possibilities!
