Briefly: Beautiful.

As a big fan of Neill Blomkamp’s work (well, aside from much of Elysium) I was pretty sad when his Alien project seemed to be shelved forever.

Now, Blomkamp has been teasing this one for what seems like forever, and today he finally revealed the first trailer for his new studio, Oats Studios’ anthology of experiemental short films, simply titled Volume One.

The trailer opens with a striking shot of an overgrown Eiffel Tower, and throughout its one minute duration showcases a variety of incredible looking creatures and unique settings.

The project is set to hit Steam in the coming months, and according to Blomkamp’s Twitter, assets from the project, including 3D models and concept art may be offered up as well.

For now, watch the gorgeous teaser below, and be sure to let us know if you’re looking forward to the project!

Briefly: We were all pretty excited to hear last week that District 9 creator Neill Blomkamp is officially working on the next Alien film, and today both he and Sigourney Weaver had an interesting chat with Sky Movies while promoting Blomkamp’s March 6th release, Chappie:

http://youtu.be/Th8os-IfZhg

In the video, Weaver states that she would “love to take Ripley out of orbiting around in space and give a proper finish to what was such such an excellent story. When someone like Neill Blomkamp suddenly said ‘well, I’m interested in finishing the story,’ my little ears perked up.”

Blomkamp continues, “I want this film to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of Aliens. So it’s Alien, Aliens, this movie.” So, by the sound of things, the next Alien may disregard Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection completely.

Are you into Blomkamp continuing the once celebrated series? What if he disregarded the last two films? Sound out below!

Briefly: The world is in desperate need of another great Alien film (especially after last year’s INCREDIBLE Alien: Isolation video game made everyone, or at least me, interested in the franchise again), and it looks as though District 9 creator Neill Blomkamp may be the man to give it to us.

It’s well known that the director was working on an Alien project at some point, as he revealed a batch of incredible concept art for the film earlier this year, at the time stating “Was working on this. Don’t think I am anymore. Love it though. #alien #xenomorph”.

Oh shit

Now, Blomkamp’s much-better-than-Elysium looking next film, Chappie, is just about to hit theatres, and the director just revealed that he’s back in bed with the Xenomorph. Take a look:

Um… So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien A photo posted by Brownsnout (@neillblomkamp) on

TheWrap was apparently able to confirm the news, and states that Blomkamp “has signed on to direct an untitled movie set in the “Alien” universe that will take place after “Prometheus 2″ for 20th Century Fox.”

Now, we’re pretty damned excited. Blomkamp is a visually spectacular director, and as long as his Alien project comes out more District 9 than Elysium, we’re confident that we’re in extremely good hands. That being said, (in my opinion) Elysium was still way better than Prometheus AND Alien: Resurrection, so I’m beyond stoked to see what Blomkamp has in store for us, especially after that incredible concept art.

Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie hits theatres on March 6th, and we’ll be sure to share any Alien news as it comes in! Are you down for a Blomkamp directed Alien film? Sound out below!

Briefly: Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie is finally just a few weeks away, and Sony today debuted two new TV spots for the anticipated film.

I’m beyond excited for the film, and at this point it looks more like District 9 than Elysium, which can only be good for the full feature. Not familiar with the film? Here’s the synopsis:

Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.

You can take a look at the new spots below (and check out the latest trailer here if you missed it), and be sure to let us know what you think! Chappie hits theatres on March 6th!

Briefly: The second trailer for District 9 and Elysium director Neil Blomkamp’s next film, Chappie, hit the web today, and it’s definitely a great follow up to the affective teaser from a few months back.

His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.

You definitely see themes and elements in the trailer that we’ve seen many times before, but this time around, it feels different. Humans, of course, made Chappie, and as humans do (and as the trailer notes) for some reason we must fear and destroy anything that we don’t understand. I sure hope that Chappie makes it out of this one, though I know it won’t be unscathed.

Also, one of Jon’s dogs is named Chappy, so it gets extra points for that one. Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think. Chappie hits theatres on March 6th, 2015.

On the final day of 2013, Jon Schnepp joins me to talk about our favorite movies of 2013… and some of our not so favourites! Will ’12 Years a Slave’ be a shoe in at the Oscars or ‘American Hustle’? Will people forget movies like ‘Gravity’ or ‘Prisoners’? What about ‘Her’ and ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’? As great as ‘Pacific Rim’ was… is it as much geek fun as ‘Man of Steel’ and ‘Thor 2’? Really, this is a super long episode because there’s just so much to talk about! As great as movies were in 2013, we help you navigate your thoughts, our thoughts and everybody’s thoughts!

While November brought very little in the form of worthwhile newly released DVDs, it’s a typical expectation as the calm before the Christmas storm. However, as it stands now, December isn’t shaping up to be a particularly great month of releases itself. While I was less than impressed with big-named titles like  Prisoners (12/17),  Elysium  (12/17), and the critically-loved indies Drinking Buddies (12/3) and Ain’t Them Bodies Saints (12/17), all of these films will be reaching the shelves just in time for the holiday season. But outside of those offerings, here are my DVD selections for the month of December.

#1. Shameless (The Series)

Episode 302

Last month I had no other choice but to praise the completion of my favorite television drama of all-time, Breaking Bad. Now this month, due to a week offering by the DVD-release gods, I’m sticking with what works and recommending my new favorite show on TV, Showtime’s Shameless. This holiday season is as good a time as any to start from the beginning and catch up on an extremely underrated series. Admittedly, the first season is a little strange and peculiar, but stay strong, because season two and three offer some of the best laughs and drama you’ll see anywhere on television. The Gallagher family is both lovable and despicable all at the same time. There’s no shortage of fantastic character development and you’ll be hooked, guaranteed! (December 17th)

#2. Despicable Me 2

Despicable

I’m going out on a limb here and giving a blind recommendation for Despicable Me 2. If you’re sitting around this Christmas and looking for the type of movie the entire family can enjoy, why not take a chance with Despicable Me 2? It’s first installment offered plenty of laugh-out-loud hilarity, and I’ve heard that the sequel keeps up with a healthy dose of comedy itself. (December 10th)

#3. Don Jon

don-jon

Although I ultimately gave it a completely mediocre review, a lackluster crop to choose from is forcing me to throw Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Don Jon into the ring. He delivers the triple threat as the writer, director and star of his own passion project about a porn-addict who’s been discovered by his new girlfriend (Scarlett Johansson). Despite being a heart-warming tale of self discovery and maturation, Don Jon suffers from a cyclic (albeit intended) approach that repeats itself over and over again, to the point of ad nauseam. I was extremely conflicted on this indie, which was fresh out of the Sundance Film Festival, and saw it twice before I could make a final decision. Perhaps you’ll find a little more enjoyment in Don Jon than I did. (December 31st)

Honorable Mention: Despite missing out on all of them myself, action fans may want to take a chance on any of The Wolverine (12/3)Fast & Furious 6 (12/10), The Lone Ranger (12/17) or Kick-Ass 2 (12/17). As a huge horror buff, I definitely plan on catching the sequel Insidious: Chapter 2 (12/24) even though I was underwhelmed with the ending of the original. And finally, one of the most raved about foreign films of the year is The Hunt (12/10), I hear it’s a must see. Until next month, have a wonderful holiday season!

Briefly: Neill Blomkamp’s second feature film, Elysium, hit theatres a few months back, making some massive dough at the box office. Within days, his third feature, a robot tale called Chappie, was greenlit.

Today, it was revealed that Hugh Jackman has joined the project. Jackman announced today at a Prisoners press conference that “I am doing a role in Neill’s new film, called Chappie, which we shoot in Johannesburg. I’m there for a couple of weeks at the beginning of next year.”

Plot details for Chappie are still scarce, though we do know that it tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes.

There’s no word yet on what role Jackman will play in the film, but we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as we find out!

What do you think of Blomkamp’s work thus far? Are you looking forward to Chappie? Sound out below!

Gilmore, Ben Dunn and Ian Kerner appear to reenact the first Geekscape! Witney Siebold and Jason Trost talk ‘Elysium’, with Ian Kerner and Jon Schnepp (who gives us an updated on ‘The Death of Superman Lives’ documentary)! Stan Lee’s Comikaze organizer Regina Carpinelli previews what’s in store for this year’s Comikaze and Geekscape writers Juan Carlos Marquez and Josh Jackson tell us why ‘Pikmin 3’ is definitely worth picking up! PLUS! ‘Airwolf’ comic writer David Gorden calls in along with longtime Geekscape writers Jacob Lopez, Shane O’Hare, Matt Kelly and Derek Kraneveldt! JUAN CARLOS!!!

Briefly: Elysium hit theatres just a few days ago, and director Neill Blomkamp’s next picture has already been greenlit.

Sony and Media Rights Capital are co-financing the film, which was written by Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell. The movie, called Chappie, “tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes.  The film will star Sharlto Copley as the voice of Chappie, with Ninja and Yolandi Visser, voices of the South African Zef counter-culture movement and members of rap-rave duo Die Antwoord, as the two gangsters.”

Production of Chappie is set to begin this Fall. A release date for the film has not been set.

I’m a huge fan of Blomkamp, and of course Sharlto Copley (who really was the stand out performance of Elysium). I really can’t wait to see what the duo does next!

Does Chappie sound like your cup of tea? Sound out below!

It’s widely accepted that 2009 was a “down year” for movies. However, one remarkably surprising diamond in the rough came from a then first-time director, Neill Blomkamp. Blomkamp’s debut feature, District 9, fused together riveting sci-fi and action with dramatic elements concerning social warfare. Blomkamp dazzled audiences and delivered one of the year’s biggest highlights. In 2013, the director returns with his followup blockbuster, Elysium. Being of a similar mold as its predecessor, Elysium marks a dissatisfying regression for the young filmmaker.

In 2154 Earth has become so overpopulated that the rich and privileged have abandoned their former planet and moved to a high-class and luxurious man-made space station called Elysium. Free of crime and disease, Elysium is merely a dream for the downtrodden and lowly citizens of Earth such as Max Da Costa (played by Matt Damon). But when a terrible accident leaves Da Costa with only five days to live, he’ll stop at nothing to venture to the forbidden space station and rid his body of the deadly effects.

Elysium

Four years in the making, it’s shameful to find that Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium is merely a hollow shell that attempts to recapture the poetic beauty of the director’s first feature, but misses entirely. Everything about Blomkamp’s sophomore effort holds tightly to District 9. The look, the feel and even the great social divide. In fact, committed performances from A-List stars such as Matt Damon and Jodie Foster still fail to keep Elysium afloat. Where District 9 felt realistic and believable, the director’s new release feels overblown and tacky. In addition to its mildly compelling story, Elysium suffers from a complete action overdose. Trading crafty dialogue and genuine drama for gunfire and more gunfire, this summer blockbuster culminates as nothing more than a cheap imitation of Blomkamp’s earlier work.

elysium2

If there’s any noteworthy silver lining in Elysium, it comes in the form of Sharlto Copley’s unforgettable villainous role. Copley, who starred as the meek main man Wikus in District 9, gives a transcending 180-degree turn as one of the film’s prominent antagonists, Kruger. The truly talented actor demonstrates his immense versatility and ultimately steals the show. But outside of Copley, Elysium is otherwise filled with mediocrity and countless disappointing aspects. Everything from a thoughtless and far-fetched story (only ONE person has access to the computer coding that controls ALL of the law enforcement robots … seriously?) to an unoriginal mood and tone. Instead of breaking out from the norm like he did with his debut effort, Blomkamp lazily attempts to draw from his own work and the lack of creativity proves vital.

For as groundbreaking as District 9 managed to be, I was completely let down by the director’s latest feature. Infused with an abundance of action and mind-numbing special effects, Elysium offers nothing more than a bland and mediocre movie experience. While those elements can sometimes make for a crowd-pleaser that many will enjoy, I’d rather get lost in a thought-provoking story with a unique vibe. Unfortunately, Elysium delivers none of the above.

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planet’s crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium – but some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens’ luxurious lifestyle. The only man with the chance bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission – one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces – but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.

Sony has released the first poster for Neil Blomkamp’s Elysium starring Matt Damon. The first trailer for the film from the District 9 director is set to hit tomorrow. Footage from the film was shown at a special screening earlier today and all I’m going to say is that you have every reason to be excited about this one.

Sony Pictures have debuted a new still image from Neill Blomkamp’s (District 9) highly anticipated sci-fi film Elysium, featuring Matt Damon. This image further proves that if you take an actor and make him bald…he looks like a bad ass. No, seriously. Think about it.

Sony Pictures has chosen to move the release date for Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi flick Elysium to August 9, 2013. That spot was up until today the release date for one of their other big releases, Jose Padhila’s RoboCop, which has been moved back to February 7, 2014. That August date is roughly around the same time that Sony released Blomkamp’s first feature District 9 back in 2009.

District 9 went on to gross $37.4 million on opening weekend and went on to bring in roughyl $200M-plus worldwide. Sony definitely has high expectations for Elysium which was originally set to hit theaters in March. This is actually a smart move on Sony’s part in regards to both films. It will allow Elysium to bring in more of that summer box office money while the RoboCop team is given more time to market and test the film and possibly go back for re-shoots if needed. So, uh by the way…when should we expect to actually see that Elysium trailer Sony?

Neill Blomkamp (‘District 9’) will be releasing the first look at his upcoming sci-fi flick ‘Elysium’ at San Diego Comic-Con but we have the first look at Damon in the movie for you right now. Yup…Damon is bald in this movie. And what is Chemrail? I don’t know. I will be attempting to attend the panel in Hall H and fill you guys in. Key word: attempt.

Set in 2159, Damon plays a man who takes on a daunting mission in a world where the very wealthy live on the pristine, man-made space station called Elysium, and fight to keep the citizens of Earth from illegally immigrating. Political subtext!

Co-starring Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, William Fichtner, Alice Braga, Diego Luna and Wagner Moura, “Elyisum” opens on March 1, 2013. Take a look at bigger pic below.
