Earlier this year the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) was on life support until Patty Jenkins revived hope with her blockbuster hit Wonder Woman. The release date was chosen specifically to build momentum for DCEU’s most pivotal installment to date, Justice League, which combines and introduces an elite army of superheroes synonymous to Marvel’s The Avengers. And with DCEU figurehead Zack Snyder’s unfortunate late-stage departure from the film and, coincidentally, The Avengers writer Joss Whedon’s claiming of the throne, no one knew what to expect from this wildly anticipated release.

Following the death of Superman (Henry Cavill), Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) and Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) learn of an other-worldly threat with devious plans of destroying Earth. Together they recruit the help of metahumans The Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) in order to combat the villain Steppenwolf (voice of Ciaran Hinds). But are they strong enough to resist the forceful army of Steppenwolf? If only Superman was still around to help.

Transitioning the formula to fit the comedic tone of the DCEU’s previous effort Wonder WomanJustice League continues with a dark-aura that’s lightened by timely humor. This is reasonable to expect with long-time Marvel scribe Joss Whedon crafting the screenplay. And although the final effect is nowhere near the level of Wonder Woman, mainly due a surprisingly low amount of energy and a complete level of predictability, Justice League still manages to satisfy a bit more than previous DCEU films like Man of SteelDawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. Gal Gadot continues to impress and Ezra Miller also delivers a standout performance, yet Affleck and new faces Jason Momoa and Ray Fisher aren’t nearly as successful. Furthermore, the film pridefully relies on a bombardment of mind-numbing visual effects that are in no way an acceptable substitute for a meaningful story or valuable character development. Justice League serves as another flat and superficial endeavor from the DCEU that won’t hold up over time.

Zack Snyder might not be the most respected man in Hollywood right now (quite the opposite), but to be fair, the guy has the weight of an entire cinematic universe on his shoulders every day.

About an hour ago, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Snyder is suddenly stepping down from his role as director for the upcoming Justice League film alongside his wife Deborah Snyder who produces the DCEU films. The reason for stepping away is due to the sudden death of their daughter Autumn who committed suicide. While we don’t necessarily like his films, this must be incredibly hard on him and his family, so we here at Geekscape.net would like to wish Mr. Snyder the best and hope his family can make a recovery after such a tragic event.

In the meantime, Joss Whedon will take charge of Justice League, shooting extra scenes and finishing up the final edit of the film so that it can make its November 17th deadline. Once again, we wish Mr. Snyder and his family the best and hope they can overcome this.

Joss Whedon, the man behind such classics as FireflyBuffy the Vampire Slayer, and the Avengers, has stepped out of fantasy and into the very real world with his powerful short film, Unlocked. The movie was created in support of the organization, Planned Parenthood, which provides affordable health care as well as sex education to all genders. Planned Parenthood has been the target for attacks by anti-abortion extremists and is currently facing the challenges brought forth by the current administration’s American Health Care Act. The bill includes a provision that blocks those relying on Medicaid coverage from utilizing Planned Parenthood’s preventive care.

Unlocked follows the struggles of three women, all in real-life situations: the first with breast cancer, the second dealing with an unhealthy relationship, and the third handling an unplanned pregnancy. While the characters depicted are fictional, these circumstances are all issues that Planned Parenthood handles.

This morning Variety broke the big news that DC has secured and gotten Joss Whedon, yes, THAT Joss Whedon, to direct the standalone Batgirl movie. While people endlessly celebrate and get excited, there are still some things that DC should be nervous about. Whedon is a phenomenal director, but there are problems with him that could hurt DC if they aren’t careful. The first thing to consider is that if Whedon isn’t happy with what’s going on, he won’t be shy talking about it. Everyone by now knows about his infamous fallout with Marvel and the meltdown he had when he was forced to put in Thor’s vision scene in Avengers: Age of Ultron if he wanted to keep Hawkeye’s family story line. That fallout was Josh Trank levels of bad, and it shows since he hasn’t really done anything notable since.

Also building off of him not staying quiet about things is that since his recent return to social media, Whedon has gotten very political. I get that you care very much about your country and what happens in it, but talking about it at almost a nauseating extent is getting you up there on Amy Schumer levels of political talk, and you DON’T want to be anywhere near there.

Nonetheless, this is a great chance for DC to really pick themselves up from their rut, and this is a great risk for them to take. Let’s just hope it doesn’t blow up in their face. What are you thoughts on the announcement? Tell us in the comments below!

We had the opportunity to attend the Special Content Showcase for the in-home release of Avengers: Age of Ultron (digital available now, blu-ray starting October 2nd) and the event was the perfect blend of prestige and accessibility. It served as an unveiling for the special limited editions of exclusive poster art for the film by artist Tyler Stout, which was incredibly impressive printed in metallic inks. There was also a very neat Hulkbuster t-shirt that, honestly, I’m not seeing anywhere online in the sea of available Hulkbuster t-shirts (didn’t even realize that was a thing). It wasn’t exactly made clear how you could get this exclusive, limited quantities, shirt. There’s a slip that came with mine saying that you can get one for $20 (plus s/h) when you buy the movie—so maybe there’s a slip in the blu-ray case or a digital certificate if you buy a digital copy?

Hosted in the Hero Complex Gallery in Los Angeles, they put out a nice spread in a very welcoming, cozy and creative environment. The gallery hosts a lot of rotating art events, many tied to entertainment. I recommend you check them out at hcgart.com and plan to visit for your favorite exhibits when you’re in the area.

We enjoyed the presentation that screened several of the extras included with “home release” of Avengers: Age of Ultron, and I must admit I found them quite good for providing and fleshing out a high level overview of the Marvel movie universe—presenting and tying together events from the various films to map out everything Marvel has been setting up leading to the Infinity Wars. They provide a nice review/recap and get you excited for everything that is to come.

Kevin Feige (President of Marvel Studios)

That was followed by Kevin Feige (President of Marvel Studios) and Jeremy Latcham (Executive Producer of Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron) making an appearance to wax philosophical with attendees about the meanings behind various events in the movie and the Marvel films overall. There wasn’t anything particularly revealing or surprising but it was very nice to get that reassurance that every event, no matter how small, was being consciously woven into the tapestry of the larger arcs that guide the various Marvel films. This also extends to the shows—and, the same way actors in the films have been able to cross into the shows, the street goes both ways. So that, if the actors in the shows are willing, when there’s an opportunity for a particular character to appear in the films, Marvel is very interested in keeping the same performer in the role. That’s a level of consistency and loyalty I can really get behind.

Feige and Latcham also took some time to discuss the integration of Spider-Man going forward. The most interesting part is how fluid and planned out their story architecture is so that they’re ready for any combination of possibilities that might develop—will a given character be available to weave in?—is there room in the narrative of a specific film for a particular character?—will the same actor being playing the part?—and if that actor is replaced, will there need to be an explanation of some kind? They’re keeping all of these things in mind and have plans within plans ready for the different possible combination of scenarios that will still keep with the overall vision. That’s some impressive planning that will not only play out with the integration of Spider-Man but also Captain Marvel.

The heartbreaking part of the evening for me was when we finally got to ask about plans for Howard the Duck (after the tease in Guardians of the Galaxy) and were just met with laughter. Another attendee got even more specific asking when and how Howard the Duck would be making his way to Earth. “Well, it didn’t work out so well the first time,” was their brief response; referencing the 1986 film, Howard the Duck (featuring Lea Thompson, Jeffrey Jones and Tim Robbins) that disappointed at the box office and with fans—except this one right here. . . although, to be fair, it has been a couple decades since I’ve seen it. Regardless, I’m personally looking forward to more Howard—I’ve still got my fingers crossed that he’ll be making some more cameos soon.

The evening definitely gave me some more love for Avengers: Age of Ultron, understanding better about all the plates they’re trying to keep spinning. And it really is saying something about an entertainment company when the worst thing that can be said about their weaker entries is, “it was pretty good.”

Joss Whedon, you moved mountains! We love you! Please don’t stay away too long!

Yesterday, the calendar turned to May and the summer blockbuster season wasted no time getting started with the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron. After its 2012 origin film amassed the third largest worldwide box office total of all-time, all eyes were on Joss Whedon’s enormously anticipated sequel. Unfortunately, though, this follow-up feature falls well short of the charm and frenetic thrills evident in the first installment.

The film opens with the Avengers doing what they do best, taking down a crime syndicate with remarkable ease. That is, until a pair of “enhanced” siblings (Godzilla‘s stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen) reveal their superhuman abilities, unmatched speed and deceptive mind-control. Eventually, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) retrieves what they’re after from the mission and discovers its ability to produce highly advanced artificial intelligence. Without the approval from his team Stark creates Ultron, an experiment that goes terribly wrong. The evolved A.I. denounces his maker and joins forces with the enhanced siblings, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, to destroy the Avengers.

avengers1

Cluttered and unfocused, Age of Ultron falls apart in many different areas. Whedon and company effectively mastered the balance of a star-filled story in this film’s predecessor. However, more isn’t always better as Whedon struggles to keep things fluid with the addition of many, and I do mean many, new characters. Displaying an unnatural flow throughout the movie, things get even worse once the script takes a strange turn by diving deep into the personal stories of its characters. Where the original successfully glazes over each hero’s backstory and jumps right into the action, Age of Ultron ventures further into their psyche thanks to the Scarlet Witch’s mind tricks. With each of these developing drama-filled plot lines, the minutes continue to mount and the pacing becomes crippled.

avengers 2

In addition to an unnecessary change of course in the script and an overabundance of characters, Age of Ultron‘s action sequences are extremely drawn out and exceedingly unwarranted. If you thought 2013’s Man of Steel was flooded with obnoxiously destructive scenes, just wait until you feast your eyes on this film. The damage is beyond catastrophic and it makes the Avengers feel less like heroes and more like ticking time-bombs. And finally, Age of Ultron does a huge disservice by completely mishandling its chief villain and title character. Forced into sharing screen time with each and every main character – and there are plenty of them – Ultron becomes an overlooked antagonist who never grows into the monstrous adversary this franchise deserves. Although his mishandling isn’t as big of an abomination as Sir Ben Kingsley’s the Mandarin in Iron Man 3, it’s a lot closer than any of us would desire.

At its core, Age of Ultron attempts to stick to the same philosophy that’s been working for all of the Marvel films, tons of comedy and action. But despite achieving a good deal of laughs, albeit at a less impressive clip than the original, the film suffers in far too many areas to sustain its winning formula. With grand expectations Joss Whedon seemingly got suckered into the “bigger is better” mindset. Perhaps, Age of Ultron would have benefited more from a slightly scaled-down approach.

Amber Benson arrives on the Geekscape show to talk about her brand new novel “The Witches of Echo Park”! We talk to Amber about writing, what her literary influences are and of course ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’! What are the dangers of doing a 3 hour Reddit AMA? What is her best and worst exchange with a fan? And just how sexual a book is “The Witches of Echo Park”? Things get a little raunchy as Ben geeks out and we all go a little blue! I recommend ‘Essex County’ to Amber and she talks about her cinephile love of ‘Nights of Cabiria’! Yes! It’s THAT weird of a Geekscape… and we wouldn’t have it any other way!

Briefly: We all received a fantastic treat late last week when the first trailer for Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron leaked online, DAYS before it’s scheduled launch on last night’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Marvel blamed it on Hydra, which was a hilarious and lighthearted way of looking at the leak. Not wanting to leave any of us S.H.I.E.L.D. fans hanging, the studio attached a special look at the film on last night’s episode. If you we’re lucky enough to be in Hall H at SDCC this past Summer, than it’s nothing new for you, but it’s exciting to see the scene online and official.

It’s also fantastic to see the look on Thor’s face when Cap almost lifts the hammer, and now we can see it over and over and over again. The rest of the video is pretty much the trailer we’ve already seen, but I’m not going to say no to watching that one again. Take a look at the video below, and let us know if you’re excited!

Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theatres on May 1st, 2015.

LITERALLY NONE OF THESE WORDS MATTER. THESE ARE JUST WORDS. WHAT YOU WANT IS BELOW. But play along, please?

Earlier tonight the the much-anticipated Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer was leaked online. It was supposed to air during next week’s Mavel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But because this is 2014, of course it didn’t! After a pretty amusing, self-deprecating tweet, Marvel has decided “eff it, let’s just do it.” The trailer is now on their official YouTube page, in crystal clear high-definition.

The trailer has all the neat stuff I kept hearing about from San Diego Comic-Con this summer. The Hulkbuster, an Avengers party, Ultron himself. It’s all really neat.

My favorite part, though, is what James Spader’s Ultron (and it’s so unmistakably him) says in the trailer: “You want to protect the world. But you don’t want it to change.” There is an ongoing, neverending debate that I love getting into about the true nature of superheroes. As protectors of the status-quo, what is their role when the world needs changing? Not that I expect Age of Ultron to be political in any shape or form, but the movie (I hope) will continue to change the superhero genre and begin to ask questions we, the dedicated superhero nerds who hold up this art to a higher level than most, might be uncomfortable to answer.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron will be released in 2015 and it will make so much money.

Briefly: This one’s been rumoured since back in August, but that rumour has just been confirmed.

Elizbeth Olsen is Scarlet Witch in The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Jackson touched on Age of Ultron, and ultimately broke the news about the casting, stating that ”I know we’re shooting in London, that James Spader is Ultron and going to be the bad guy, and that we added Ms. [Elizabeth] Olsen [who will play the Scarlet Witch], but I don’t know what she’s doing, if she’s on the inside or the outside. I haven’t seen a script.”

Jackson also states that filming on Age of Ultron won’t start until March of 2014.

Are you looking forward to seeing Olsen in the role? She’s been pretty fantastic in everything that I’ve seen her in! Is there anyone else you’d rather have seen play Scarlet Witch? Sound out below!

Briefly: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered last night to a whopping 11.9 million viewers, making it the LARGEST television drama premiere in almost four years (surpassed only by ABC’s own V a few years back).

As it turns out, most of the footage we’d seen up to last night was contained within the explosive (and sometimes dry) premiere episode, leaving all of us wondering what would come next for the newly assembled don’t-call-it-a-team.

Fear not! ABC has debuted a new trailer for the series, showing off some of the action that’s set to hit in subsequent episodes. It looks like a lot of fun, but hopefully the show can solve some of the issues present with the pilot episode.

Take a look at the new trailer below, and let us know what you thought of last night’s premiere!

Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson’s team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) expert pilot and martial artist, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker); brilliant engineer and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet). From Executive Producers Joss Whedon (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” ”Buffy the Vampire Slayer”); Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot co-writers (“Dollhouse,” “Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”); Jeffrey Bell (“Angel,” “Alias”); and Jeph Loeb (“Smallville”) comes Marvel’s first TV series. “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.

Briefly: The day is finally here folks. Marvel tonight steps into live-action television in a post-Avengers world with Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and we couldn’t be more excited.

Neither could the rest of the world, apparently. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. already has over one million fans on Facebook, and that number is sure to grow after tonight’s Joss Whedon directed premiere. Late last night, ABC debuted a new trailer for the series, fresh with some new footage that should get everyone hot and bothered for tonight’s episode.

Take a look at the preview below and let us know if you’re excited! Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres at 8PM! Coulson LIVES!

Dark Horse Comics sent the Whedonverse into paroxysms of anticipation this weekend when it teasingly tweeted: “#wheresSerenity” followed by a link to their blog, which merely had the graphic below and a deliberately vague press release. They followed up with a social media blitz of concept art of Serenity herself and other links on their Twitter, Facebook and Instagram pages, all with the hash tags #firefly or #wheresSerenity until just a few hours ago, when Dark Horse confirmed the return with another tweet:

This is not a drill! @DarkHorseComics is bringing back #firefly.

Details are still few and far between, though speculation is that this heralds a new start for Firefly in the comic universe as a true comic series, with seasons, much like how Buffy and X-Files continued in comic book form, Or so fans hope. Donna Dickens at Buzzfeed notes; Firefly fans know how to hope.

Previously, Firefly had only been published in comic book form as mini-series or stand alone stories.

Dark Horse is promising more information in the months to come, so for now follow DH comics @DarkHorseComics and watch for #wheresSerenity and #firefly–and check back here, of course–for updates and all the Brown Coat news fit for the ‘Verse.

Briefly: After an interesting twitter campaign yesterday that had fans retweeting by the thousands, ABC has debuted a flashy new poster for their upcoming series, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (that title is never going to get shorter, is it?).

The poster really doesn’t reveal anything new about the series, or better prepare us for the September 24th premiere, but seeing as the series begins in just over a month, it’s definitely time for ABC to get marketing. This poster game definitely did its duty too, as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was one of yesterday’s top trending topics.

Take a look at the new poster below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the show! Again, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres on September 24th!

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was just ordered to series last week, and ABC is not wasting any time buiding anticipation for it.

First, we saw a neat first teaser during Sunday’s Once Upon A Time season finale. Shortly afterwards, a mysterious viral marketing site popped up online. Now, it’s time for more footage. The newest teaser clocks in at just seven seconds (I’m guessing we’re going to see a lot of these…), and is titled ‘Welcome to Level 7’. Take a look below, and let us know what you think!

The network has also released their Fall schedule, and while no premiere date or episode count has been revealed, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will air on Tuesday nights at 8pm. With just months to go until we finally get to see the show, how freaking excited are you?

UPDATE: Just seconds after this article was published, ABC released the full trailer for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The preview clocks in at just under 3 minutes, and it looks amazing. Watch it below!

ABC is sure going full force with this one.

Along with the first teaser for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (damn that’s a lot to type), the network has also launched the first piece of viral marketing for the anticipated series with a blog named The Rising Tide.

The site appears to be run by an anti-S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, as the top of the homepage states “WHO IS S.H.I.E.L.D.? WHAT ARE THEY HIDING? SUPER-POWERS ARE REAL. ALIENS EXIST. WHAT ELSE IS OUT THERE? WE WILL UNCOVER THE TRUTH. WE WILL NOT REMAIN SILENT ANY LONGER.”

It’ll certainly be interesting to see what The Rising Tide comes up with as Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. approaches. Currently the site features a series of short conspiracy videos tying S.H.I.E.L.D. to a plethora of disastrous (and Marvel related) events. Check out the videos below, and let us know what you think!

That longer look premiered during tonight’s season finale of Once Upon A Time, and it’s now available online for your viewing pleasure. It’s an unreal first tease at what is set to be one of the coolest television premieres of the year! I don’t want to spoil anything, so simply watch the video below, and let us know what you think!

It’s a quick look, but it’s a cool one. Production values look pretty high on the project, and it should be an absolute blast to watch. The show received its series order just a few days ago, and ABC is not wasting any time promoting it.

Watch the footage below, and look for the full teaser later tonight! Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. hits ABC this Fall!

Did anyone seriously think that this wasn’t going to happen?

It looks like Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. has received a full season order. THR reports that the announcement will come at some point tomorrow, May 10th. The episode count for the first season has not been revealed, but based on the popularity of any Marvel IP these days, I’m sure that ABC wants to air as many as possible.

UPDATE:

As expected, ABC has just announced that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been picked up for a full season. No premiere date has been set, but the network announced that the show’s marketing will begin on Sunday, May 12th at 8PM, preceding this year’s Once Upon A Time finale. The first image from the series, as well as the logo have also been revealed. Check them out below!

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will feature a pilot directed by Joss Whedon, who will also act as an executive producer on the series. A short teaser for the show appeared on ABC’s official YouTube Channel yesterday (before promptly being removed). I’ve embedded a working version below, so watch it while you can! The footage features a Hulk-like creature destroying a car, and the effects look pretty damn good!

Now that the series is official, how freaking excited are you!?

While attending the Hollywood red carpet premiere of Shane Black’s Iron Man 3, Yahoo Movies caught up with Joss Whedon and a took a few minutes to discuss the highly-anticipated 2015 sequel to The Avengers.

“I have actually finished a draft, we’re in a very good place. It’s going really well, eventually somebody will explain to me that it’s not. But I’ve been writing, meeting with actors, and we’re starting to storyboard and all the preliminary processes. This is the part where it’s all still fun. It’s an evolution, and that goes on all through shooting and it never stops. I’ve done enough shows and movies to be comfortable with that. You do come to a point where we all agree …‘Oh, I’ve got these two characters, two of my favorite characters from the comic books; a brother/sister act. They’re in the movie, that’s exciting.’ You lock certain things in. But then there’s a certain fluidity when you’re working with Robert [Downey Jr.]. He’s going to want to do something new on the day, and you’re going to want him to, because it’s going to be funny. So you always keep yourself open. I try not to think of it as topping The Avengers, I try to think of this as its own movie.”

“And by the way, Shane [Black] not helping! Iron Man 3 not helping! I see this and said, ‘Aw, man, he really got it right!’ The pressure continues! When Tony sees another superhero, he increases his swagger. Tony, he sees Thor, and he says, ‘Yeah, I got a suit of muscles that big. I invented it! Oh, you can pick up a hammer? You’re so special!’ He sees it as a challenge! He loves it.”

The most interesting point of this conversation was the two new character additions that Whedon mentioned. If he’s talking about actual siblings, could we see the inclusion of Wanda & Pietro Maximoff, better known as Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver? It’s already been revealed that their rights are up in the air and whichever studio, Fox or Marvel, uses them first gets first dibs. However, there are a handful of other characters that this could be implying as well. Ah, the many possibilities!

Last month we got our first look at Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing via the films official trailer. A few days later, the movie premiered at 2013’s SXSW festival to largely positive reviews (read ours here). With the movie getting a wide release this June, LionsGate has released an official theatrical poster for the anticipated project.

Based on the play by William Shakespeare, Joss Whedon’s adaptation is most intriguing not only for the names attached, but the contemporary look and feel of the film. Check out the poster below, and let us know what you think! Much Ado About Nothing hits theatres on June 7th.

Leonato (Clark Gregg), the governor of Messina, is visited by his friend Don Pedro (Reed Diamond) who is returning from a victorious campaign against his rebellious brother Don John (Sean Maher). Accompanying Don Pedro are two of his officers: Benedick (Alexis Denisof) and Claudio (Fran Kranz). While in Messina, Claudio falls for Leonato’s daughter Hero (Jillian Morgese), while Benedick verbally spars with Beatrice (Amy Acker), the governor’s niece. The budding love between Claudio and Hero prompts Don Pedro to arrange with Leonato for a marriage. In the days leading up to the ceremony, Don Pedro, with the help of Leonato, Claudio and Hero, attempts to sport with Benedick and Beatrice in an effort to trick the two into falling in love. Meanwhile, the villainous Don John, with the help of his allies: Conrade (Riki Lindhome) and Borachio (Spencer Treat Clark), plots against the happy couple, using his own form of trickery to try to destroy the marriage before it begins. A series of comic and tragic events continue to keep the two couples from truly finding happiness, but then again perhaps love may prevail.

We’ve heard about the cast of, but other than that there’s been plenty of secrecy surrounding the Marvel & ABC’s upcoming pilot for their S.H.I.E.L.D. series. ABC Network has now provided a an official synopsis for the Joss Whedon directed pilot, which also reveals that the series will be called Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Check out the synopsis for the hour-long prospective series below.

Joss Whedon (MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) shows us not all heroes are super with MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

Fresh from his role in the summer’s box office smash, MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS, Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) returns to the worldwide law enforcement organization S.H.I.E.L.D. He puts together a small, highly trained, team of Agents to tackle the cases that haven’t been classified yet, the new, the strange and the unknown. That team consists of straight arrow Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), an expert in combat and espionage; pilot and martial artist Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen); and brilliant if socially awkward scientists Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge). They’ll be joined by civilian new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet).

Prepare for an epic adventure that showcases the hope and wonder of the human spirit. This is a world of Super Heroes, aliens and the unusual – of action, spectacle and world spanning stories. The show will speak to the human condition through the lens of our very human, non-powered S.H.I.E.L.D agents – that together we are greater than we are apart, and that we can make a difference in the world.

Executive Produced and co-written by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen (Dollhouse, Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog), Jeffrey Bell (Angel, Alias) and Jeph Loeb (Smallville, Lost, Heroes) comes Marvel’s first live-action TV series, MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

Word is that the pilot for the prospective series (who are we kidding…it’s going to get picked up) will air sometime in August.

Even though filming has already wrapped on Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot it appears that we’ve got another confirmed cast member. It has been revealed that Joss Whedon has cast J. August Richards, who he has worked with in the past on Angel, in what is being called a “super top-secret role.” Let the speculation commence! Richards will join Clark Gregg, Ming-Na, Chloe Bennet, Elizabeth Henstridge Iain De Caestecker and Brett Dalton in the series pilot which is set to air sometime in August.

Well, it appears the muscles from Brussels has his eyes set on a new role. The actor and Belgian martial artist wrote on Facebook earlier today:

601598_10152656627610046_59097361_n

“It was my pleasure to meet Mr. Stan Lee back in 1994, along with Mr. Samuel & Mr. Victor Hadida! I read that Chris Hemsworth (star of “Thor” and brother of Liam Hemsworth, “The Expendables 2”) would like me to costar in “The Avengers 2” movie!

Well, it would be fun to play one of these types of amazing comic book characters again. By the way, I am a big fan of Marvel’s superhero Silver Surfer and also another heroic fictional character known as Doc Savage – the Man of Bronze!”

Now, while we don’t know how the actor would fit in with the film…we wouldn’t be entirely against it. So, what do you say Joss?

The Avengers sequel is set to hit theaters May 1, 2015

We caught up with Joss Whedon and Clark Gregg at SXSW and talked with the two about the upcoming pilot for Marvel & ABC’s S.H.I.E.L.D. Now, while they couldn’t reveal to us too much about the project, we did finally find out who would win in a fight between Agent Coulson and Nick Fury.

You can catch the pilot for Marvel & ABC’s S.H.I.E.L.D. this summer. Also make sure to check out our review of Whedon and Gregg’s latest film, Much Ado About Nothing, here.

So by now you likely know the story behind this latest stab at Shakespeare’s, arguably minor, work. Joss Whedon, fresh off of directing mega blockbuster The Avengers, decided to restore a bit of his sanity by making a small movie with his friends. Luckily enough for him, his friends just happen to be a stable of charming and loyal actors that commonly get together at his place to do Shakespeare readings. Much Ado About Nothing is the result of 12 days of hanging out at Joss’s house, drinking a copious amount of alcohol, and playing with friends.

It’s also worth noting that Whedon made the, not entirely unique, choice to set the play in modern day and using modern speech patterns while maintaining the original text. Shakespeare is not as difficult as many make him out to be but when his words are set to a modern cadence it can be a bit hard to follow if you are not intimately familiar with the words already. I’m a fan but by no means a scholar, and as such it took me a little while at the beginning to get my bearings.

much_ado_about_nothing_still_a_l

Once it gets going, it becomes clear how perfect a match Shakespeare is to Whedon. Whedon, despite his history of horror and sci fi and recent turn as action blockbuster director, has always lived and died by dialog and character. Seeing him bring his sensibility to the some of the best dialog in literary history is quite exciting and his troupe of actors are clearly having a blast with it.

And they really are having fun with it. This is no reverential work. Joss and crew allow for improvisation. They alter some text and characterization. They attack the play from a different angle to allow for a darker interpretation. They even poke fun at some of the bards more curious lines and archaic ideas. It never quite breaks the fourth wall but it comes close at times.

The cast is full of Whedon regulars who, if you are familiar with their previous Whedon roles, get to play wonderfully against type. Alexis Denisof, who played the stuffy and awkward Wesley Wyndam-Price in Buffy and Angel, gets to play a showboating lothario as Benedick. Amy Acker, meek and vulnerable in Angel, gets to be a strong independent woman in Beatrice. Fran Kanz, geeky comic relief in Dollhouse and Cabin In The Woods, makes a revelatory turn as a dramatic and romantic lead with Claudio. Sean Maher, virtuous and protective in Firefly, turns villainous and deceitful with Don John. The list goes on, but nearly every actor brings a unique element to the film and gets their own moment to shine.

Tom-Lenk-and-Nathan-Fillion-in-Joss-Whedons-Much-Ado-About-Nothing

There is a downside to all this fun and camaraderie, however. Much Ado About Nothing never quite feels like a real movie. Never quite escapes the feeling that you’re watching a bunch of friends goof around. It often times feels like the actors are seconds away from laughing and breaking character. It sometimes feels like a skit. It veers wildly in tone between heart wrenching monologues, slapstick humor, dark sexuality, self aware camera winking, and wide eyed romanticism.

It’s a strange conundrum. The reason the movie is worth watching is the fact that it explores a myriad of interesting ideas and allows itself to have fun with them, but that also keeps it from feeling real or substantial. It’s all a bit of a goof, but it’s a damned entertaining one.

Lionsgate today released the official trailer for Joss Whedon’s next film, Much Ado About Nothing. That title may be familiar to you, as the film is actually an adaptation of the William Shakespeare play of the same name.

We all know just how busy Whedon is these days, so its nice to see him get away from his Marvel work and do something on a slightly smaller scale. Watch the trailer for Much Ado About Nothing Below, and let us know what you think! The film hits theatres on June 7th!
