Geekscape Movie Review: Knives Out

Once upon a time, Rian Johnson went from being a uniquely-voiced and rapidly-emerging filmmaker to instantly becoming the man who ruined the Star Wars saga (for me, at least). Needless to say, I didn’t (and still don’t) have a favorable view of Johnson’s The Last Jedi. But what a difference two years can make, as the stains of Johnson’s past can hardly be noticed courtesy of a brand-new, briskly-paced whodunit mystery that reminds us all just how brilliant of a writer and director he can be.

Knives Out tells the perversely entertaining and fictional story of beloved crime novelist, Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer), who shockingly dies on the evening of his 85^th birthday celebration. With a massively wealthy estate and a host of friends and relatives at the residence, each with their own motives and agendas, everyone must be considered a suspect. Thankfully, the witty and astute detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) has been mysteriously hired to unmask the truth behind Thombley’s unexpected death.

Rian Johnson’s cleverly crafted screenplay serves as the backbone to this unpredictable and amusing whodunit film. Knives Out cycles through a series of suspects and motives all while purposely tipping its hand quite a bit. Yet, as we soon find out, there are many mysteries buried within the veins of this story. And all throughout this creative and original script rests a healthy dose of humor and a diverse collection of notable characters, each of whom add a unique element to the overlying mystery. These characters come to life superbly thanks to one of 2019’s finest ensembles. Along with the aforementioned Daniel Craig and Christopher Plummer, co-stars Chris Evans, Toni Collette, Michael Shannon, Jamie Lee Curtis, LaKeith Stanfield and Don Johnson all deliver well-rounded performances that play off one another perfectly. Yet, it’s the underdog of the cast, up-and comer Ana de Armas (Blade Runner 2049), who truly steals the show with a deeply committed and soulful turn of her own. Knives Out has all the makings of an Original Screenplay Oscar contender, the script really is that good. If you’re in search of an energetic mystery that’s guaranteed to keep you guessing, Rian Johnson’s page-turning new effort not only has what you’re looking for, it’s one of the best films of year.

Geekscape Movie Review: Avengers: Infinity War

For more than a decade the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has branded 19 films in total that have completely merged together in what’s guaranteed to be this summer’s most lucrative blockbuster, Avengers: Infinity War. Now, we’ve been down similar roads before with Marvel’s first ambitious multi-hero collaboration, The Avengers, and with both the film’s sequel, Age of Ultron, and the third Captain America installment, Civil War. The success of these grandiose endeavors have been met with varying levels of success, casting a huge question-mark over the MCU’s newest title. But allow me to wash away any worries you may have by fearlessly labeling Infinity War as one of the top films to-date in Marvel’s ever-expanding universe.

Despite their conflicting opinions regarding oversight of their Earth-protecting superhero group “The Avengers”, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) must put their differences aside and get the old team back together when they learn of a cosmic villain named Thanos (Josh Brolin) who’s en route to their home planet. Thanos is on a mission to collect all six infinity stones, hidden artifacts that possess unimaginable power, and he pinpoints a pair of them located on Earth where he’ll stop at nothing to acquire them and bring balance to the galaxy. And with the fate of humanity on the line, Marvel’s greatest superheroes must confront their most powerful foe yet.

Prior to Infinity War, little was known about the film’s primary antagonist, Thanos. And although this approach is a foreign concept within the familiar formulaic structure that’s helped mold the MCU into an unstoppable machine, the character of Thanos is met with bold originality that makes Infinity War “his” film. Rarely is a villain gifted such an enormous responsibility, but Thanos makes the most of his opportunity and commands the viewer’s sympathy with a unique perspective to what’s perceived by The Avengers as an evil plot. Both his character and his mission are propelled by surprising depth that will make the audience question their own ethical beliefs. With Infinity War, sibling directors Joe and Anthony Russo create a moral dilemma in which there may be no right or wrong answer, but instead resolve must come from a desperate battle for survival between Thanos and Marvel’s assorted collection of superheroes. Yet, while the film’s story is as compelling as its uptempo action and finely-tuned pacing, Infinity War does sour with overly sappy dramatics that artificially attempt to raise the emotional stakes. Nevertheless, these cheaply constructed moments take a backseat to Infinity War‘s cerebral and multi-dimensional tale that culminates with a cliff-hanging finale guaranteed to keep you longing for the next chapter in Marvel’s elaborate cinematic universe.

Geekscape Movie Reviews: The Gifted

Most directors would envy a debut as successful as Marc Webb’s 2009 Golden Globe-nominated film, (500) Days of Summer. Webb then took a bit of a leap by following-up his rom-com with superhero blockbusters, The Amazing Spider-Man and its 2014 sequel. But success is fickle in this industry and, like many do, the filmmaker has gone from being handed a major franchise to taking on the new limited-release drama, Gifted.

Chris Evans trades in his Captain America uniform for a much simpler life as Frank Adler, a boat repairman raising his deceased sister’s child, Mary (Mckenna Grace), who’s firm understanding of advanced mathematics is a rarity. But as Frank pushes Mary towards a conventional childhood built on playing and making friends in the public school sector, rather than a taxing life of studying rigorous mathematics at a specialized institution, his mother (Lindsay Duncan) resurfaces and takes legal action with a custody battle over guardianship of the seven year-old girl.

As a professor of mathematics myself, Gifted‘s distinct premise certainly raised my interest. Marc Webb’s latest work attempts to master the delicate balance between a hearty drama and frequent humor. Chris Evans’ sarcastic delivery feels organic and newcomer McKenna Grace offers an impressive turn as well, however the entire cast ultimately becomes limited by a one-dimensional screenplay. At it’s core, Gifted merely scratches the surface of its fundamental moral quandary regarding whether or not a truly exceptional child prodigy should be pushed towards a lifetime commitment of study and research as a duty to humanity, or if they’re should also be entitled to a “normal” upbringing. But rather than tackling this issue head-on, Gifted tip-toes around the predicament with an overly sentimental examination of its story. Regrettably, co-stars Octavia Spencer and Jenny Slate find their talents wasted as expendable characters who are written into the script as obvious fillers. Yet. while Gifted does manage to boast a few tender moments of cinematic expression, they are far to0 sporadic to withstand a fatally flawed screenplay from writer Tom Flynn.

Geekscape Reviews: ‘Captain America: Civil War’

Captain America: Civil War isn’t just a refreshing change of pace from Marvel’s routine formula in its winning franchise strategy, it is simply a great movie. Though exhausting in how it juggles its staggering ensemble cast, Civil War is a thrilling, heartfelt, and often times funny smash and bash rumination on accountability and oversight in the 21st century. Though it doesn’t come away completely unscathed, when the smoke clears Civil War will be celebrated as a total victory for Marvel and the entire superhero genre.

Inevitably, no matter how close you get with co-workers, friends, and family, eventually you want to punch one of them in the face. The premise behind Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and loosely based on the 2006 comic of the same name, is of course more complex than that. But the rage is palpable for those of us without superpowers: Following another international incident that causes brutal bystander casualties, the privately-operated Avengers — led by the square jawed but complex Capt. Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America (Chris Evans) — are coerced by the world’s governments to come under multinational oversight. Former Avenger and billionaire Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) is the right kind of type-A personality who leads several of the Marvel heroes’ support while Rogers opposes, refusing to shift blame to others. The two titans of Marvel clash, attract new superheroes to the cause — Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland) — while a neutral enemy plays their card in a terribly distracted world.

The 13th film in the ever-expanding Marvel “Cinematic Universe,” Civil War is a retroactive “fix” or a sneaky jab to critics who complain these films fetishize 9/11 imagery for spectacle. Civil War re-contextualizes the sweeping victories in 2012’s The Avengers and 2014’s The Winter Soldier into something more consequential. Maybe Hulk smashing does cause real damage. After the mind-numbing death orgy of 2013’s Man of Steel and its succeeding Batman v Superman, Civil War is like a sincere apology on behalf of the genre to a weary audience. And as an apology, it presents breathtaking, incredibly choreographed action and some really knee slapping hysterics.

Of all the things to consider Civil War, one would assume “funny” could be the last adjective. But Civil War is light, very light, without treading on childish goofiness (though I personally like when superhero movies embrace that). Even in the middle of jaw-dropping action there’s time for a joke, and it’s never forced or even insincere. Step away from the politically presumptuous comic book from Mark Millar and what Civil War is is an excuse for superheroes to fight. Marvel is, always, an obscenely budgeted, delicately crafted, A-list starring version of a Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers script. And yet the magic of Marvel is that it revels in that joy without posturing, or even feeling embarrassed by its kitschy roots.

Positively, Civil War is stacked with characters. Regrettably, it juggles them so much it’s nearly tiresome. Civil War by its nature will attract fans who could tell you everything about T’Challa and Wakanda before Chadwick Boseman walks on screen (Boseman is GREAT, by the way, and the Black Panther costume is pure eye candy), but in the nearly two and a half hour running time you witness a revolving door of characters, who all come with their own arcs, backgrounds, and motivations. For so long one could skip the last Marvel movie, but Civil War will punish that. The Russos should be commended for the tight wire act they display with the film’s characters, but it’s not perfect and could never be. So those who didn’t bother with Ant-Man or, more importantly, Age of Ultron will find themselves at a loss with who’s who.

I have no where to put this sentence, but it bears mentioning: Sebastian Stan’s Bucky, a.k.a. The Winter Soldier, is very much the centerpiece of Civil War in a way he never was in the original comic book. And Stan performs reliably well as a cold (excuse the pun), detached puppet for a darker enemy. Everything extends like a web around Bucky, whose presence is very much why almost everything in Civil War works.

Speaking of “webs” and working, Civil War has introduced us to our best Spider-Man yet. Tom Holland is a real delight as the teenaged Peter Parker, considerably younger and whimsical than previous actors Andrew Garfield and Tobey McGuire, who Holland outshines. He’s charismatic but comfortable in the role, as comfortable as the bright, vibrant suit he wears as the webslinger. The film really does speed through Spider-Man’s “origin” to the point it’s almost barely mentioned — and yeah, because we know it already — but it’s there and you can bet it’ll be explored at length in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Civil War is a lot of things: Funny, tense, well-paced, exhilarating — go in to the German airport fight scene knowing nothing, it’s better that way. It also falls victim to some of the trappings of the Marvel Universe. The stakes are tangible and, most importantly, there, but they also somehow aren’t due to the inevitable sequels and bombastic Infinity War on the horizon. Still, Civil War is a real win for the summer movie season. No matter the reasons why they fight or who wins — and there is a winner! — who doesn’t relate to wanting to sock the annoying one in the car complaining about where you’re going to eat, or a co-worker being smug in the email thread or Slack channel? You don’t need superpowers to maybe think these guys are still just human.

Captain America: Civil War gets 4 1/2 out of 5.

This ‘Fantastic Four’ Honest Trailer Reminds Us Just How Bad Those Last Two Movies Were

Briefly: We’re finally just a few days away from the anticipated (and already hated for some reason) release of Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot, and the hilarious team over at Screen Junkies has just released a hilarious Honest Trailer take on 2005’s Fantastic Four and 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Yep, those movies were pretty, pretty terrible. There are a ton of moments shown off over the course of this Honest Trailer that I’d long since forgotten, and now I just can’t stop thinking about them.

My favourite part? When it’s mentioned that everyone totally freaked out over a black Johnny Storm, but that a Latina Sue Storm was more than okay.

‘Avengers’ Fans Angry at Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner “Slut” Jokes, For Good Reason

With Avengers: Age of Ultron set to premiere in the United States in just over a week, the press tour has gone into overdrive, and the headlining stories have been… unfortunate. They’re anything but the movie, for one thing.

Yesterday, Robert Downey Jr. suffered an extremely uncomfortable interview that prompted him to awkwardly walk out with tears in his eyes. It was a heartbreaking, sobering moment for a man we’ve seen as a titan in armor. Today, stars Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner are facing backlash for some questionable comments.

By questionable, I mean totally random and kind of bad.

“She’s a slut,” Jeremy Renner refers to fictional character Black Widow, the lone woman of the blockbuster super team.

“She has a prosthetic leg anyway,” says Chris Evans. (We’ll get to this one in a little bit.)

Let’s get this on the table first: They were jokes. Coming off an exhaustive shoot for a multi-million dollar movie, going on endless press tours answering the same, numbing, corporate-approved questions over and over again while struggling just to stay awake thanks to jet lag and constant media attention, Renner and Evans probably were just looking to have some fun and kick back.

However, that doesn’t excuse it from being bad jokes.

First, they’re a bit out of context. Defenders of these comments will argue that we’re taking their remarks out of context, but I question whether they actually have the ability to follow a conversation.The subject that prompted the remarks was about shipping Black Widow with some of the other Avengers (which I’d normally also stamp as sexist, but it’s such a popular topic amongst fans, particularly the female fans, there isn’t much negative baggage associated with it), and it would have just been harmless, if pointless babble.

Then Jeremy Renner called Black Widow a slut.

I mean, it’s jarring. Yeah, it’s about a fictional character, and that’s just what I’d even point out: she’s a fictional character. What the fuck is the point even mentioning her sex life? This isn’t Nymphomaniac either where sex is a major theme. This is Avengers where the goal is to sell t-shirts and toys.

It’s unfortunate this had to happen the same week Marvel — often the exemplars of progressive, inclusive storytelling and representation — are still reflecting some dumb boy’s club attitudes. In one major example, they’ve come under fire for not selling Black Widow merchandise at the same volume of her male counterparts. Being sold and marketed to isn’t exactly the pinnacle of diversity in my eyes, but it’s certainly reflective of larger attitudes at work.

More toys means more kids can grow up enjoying this stuff. It ensures the things you loved will live on for generations long after you’re rotting in the ground. Besides, pretend you’re a kid again and think about it: You don’t want others to play toys with? I was pretty lonely playing Power Rangers toys by myself as a kid, I would have been happy if anyone else, whoever they were, wanted to join me.

Black Widow, however problematic her character may be (not sure if a cold-hearted killer is a great role model for anybody) has become something of a spirit animal for much of the female Marvel fans, who are literally half the movie-going audience. The slut-shaming comments by two of the film’s stars against the one female character has caused quite the dissonance and vitriol from fans — and defenders of comedy or some kind of bullshit alike.

(I only pulled these four tweets just to illustrate, you can find far more with a simple search on Twitter or any comment on every article about this story on every other online outlet. Go nuts.)

I can’t quite subscribe to the “she’s a fictional character” argument. Not only are we in this kinda fucked up era where weirdos in Japan try to marry anime characters and you can’t surf Tumblr without readiNG CAPS-LOCK LADEN POSTS ABOUT THE FEELS AND REALNESS OF fiction, but we also project pieces of ourselves onto the inanimate figures who live only on paper and binary codes. How we treat and view those characters can be telling, because in some weird way it’s kind of how we treat ourselves. Ever took up martial arts because of your favorite Power Ranger? There’s a whole sect of ’90s kids who did.

If I really wanted to push buttons I’d say there’s a whole population of people who worship fictional characters and that I attended school for eighteen years devoted to said fictional characters, but I’m not in that kind of mood right now.

All of this is just unfortunate. Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner are humans and they deserve to fuck up, whether they think they were or not.

But they’ve also demonstrated themselves to be exemplary role models, and their fame in portraying superheroes have elevated them into a unique position where once only sports athletes occupied. They literally act out acts of heroism, and to an 8-year-old kid it doesn’t matter how much CGI and rendering it took because Captain America just saved people from falling wreckage! We can debate the merits and responsibilities of celebrities as a whole all day, but that won’t change the fact that people like Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner do have young eyes watching their every move and will imitate them in every way they can.

I’m happy “slut-shaming” and other types of body-shaming actually have names and that more and more people are speaking out against them. It’s insidious discrimination, to categorize people as lesser than you without actually assigning them a specific water fountain they can drink from. It’s blatant sexism, and I can’t defend that kind of casual hate speech — and make no mistake, casual, everyday, “we’re just joking” speech does as much damage as any major protest or discriminatory law can. I can speak from experience.

These are jokes, but they’re bad jokes and they shouldn’t just be “let go.” Let’s not crucify Renner and Evans and acknowledge that we’re all hella stoked for Avengers: Age of Ultron next week. But after this and Trevor Noah,* can we finally talk about what actually constitutes as comedy and what doesn’t? Can we finally accept that “harmless” sexism is anything but harmless?

Can we just not accept people being a bunch of fucking douchebags for once?

As far as the “she’s got a prosthetic leg” comment goes, allow me to dip a toe into the misogyny pool and introduce you to someone who I’d totally take in a manly fashion.

If there’s one thing sexier than a nice pair of legs, it’s strength.

*Not sure where this belongs, but it’s necessary that we not forget that unlike Trevor Noah neither Evans or Renner have earned a paycheck doing stand-up. Arguments about defending comedy go out the window in this situation.

The Newest ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ TV Spot Will Make Your Adrenaline Pump

We’re knee-deep in the storm that is the promotion for Avengers: Age of Ultron and I’m not complaining one bit. I’m stoked as hell and I’ll be there with the entire world at the midnight premiere. But until then I’m watching the trailers on an endless loop, and we’ve just been given another one to throw on rotation: the second TV spot that is nothing but energy and humor.

Unlike the morose, darker tone of the previous trailers complete with a haunting rendition of Pinocchio as metaphor, this one is a full-minute of action and humor with MTV-style kinetic energy. It’s the perfect wake up to that 3 PM slog you’ll have at work today. Watch this and you’ll want to run laps around the parking lot.

Loaded with new footage, the clear highlights are Thor/Cap’s impromptu t-ball with the shield and Quicksilver’s wonderfully cartoonish Russian accent. Plus, all the signature jokes you’ve come to expect by now.

Avengers: Age of Ultron will be released you know damn well when. (May 1.)

Watch The Extended Trailer For Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’!

Briefly: We all received a fantastic treat late last week when the first trailer for Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron leaked online, DAYS before it’s scheduled launch on last night’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Marvel blamed it on Hydra, which was a hilarious and lighthearted way of looking at the leak. Not wanting to leave any of us S.H.I.E.L.D. fans hanging, the studio attached a special look at the film on last night’s episode. If you we’re lucky enough to be in Hall H at SDCC this past Summer, than it’s nothing new for you, but it’s exciting to see the scene online and official.

It’s also fantastic to see the look on Thor’s face when Cap almost lifts the hammer, and now we can see it over and over and over again. The rest of the video is pretty much the trailer we’ve already seen, but I’m not going to say no to watching that one again. Take a look at the video below, and let us know if you’re excited!

‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ Trailer Now Online, Officially!

LITERALLY NONE OF THESE WORDS MATTER. THESE ARE JUST WORDS. WHAT YOU WANT IS BELOW. But play along, please?

Earlier tonight the the much-anticipated Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer was leaked online. It was supposed to air during next week’s Mavel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But because this is 2014, of course it didn’t! After a pretty amusing, self-deprecating tweet, Marvel has decided “eff it, let’s just do it.” The trailer is now on their official YouTube page, in crystal clear high-definition.

The trailer has all the neat stuff I kept hearing about from San Diego Comic-Con this summer. The Hulkbuster, an Avengers party, Ultron himself. It’s all really neat.

My favorite part, though, is what James Spader’s Ultron (and it’s so unmistakably him) says in the trailer: “You want to protect the world. But you don’t want it to change.” There is an ongoing, neverending debate that I love getting into about the true nature of superheroes. As protectors of the status-quo, what is their role when the world needs changing? Not that I expect Age of Ultron to be political in any shape or form, but the movie (I hope) will continue to change the superhero genre and begin to ask questions we, the dedicated superhero nerds who hold up this art to a higher level than most, might be uncomfortable to answer.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron will be released in 2015 and it will make so much money.

New ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ Featurette Lets Falcon Take Center Stage!

Briefly: We’ve seen him in the trailers, but Marvel has just launched a brand-new featurette for Captain America: The Winter Soldier that lets Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson / The Falcon take centre stage.

The film (finally) launches on April 4th, and from every piece of promotion we’ve seen so far, it looks insanely entertaining. The Winter Soldier is probably the phase three film that I’m most looking forward to.

Briefly: Well, the Super Bowl is over. The game was miserable (well, for Broncos fans at least), but the commercials, trailers, and TV spots were great.

During the game, Marvel debuted a brand-new TV spot for the film, and subsequently released an awesome new trailer online. This Winter Soldier-focussed preview may be one of the best Marvel trailers that I’ve seen in quite some time. Seriously, it’s awesome!

The feature hits theatres on April 4th, and judging from the excellent marketing so far, The Winter Soldier could be Marvel’s best phase two film yet. Only time will tell, but for now, take a look at the new stills, and let us know what you think!

Briefly: Yesterday we saw a ten second teaser and two new stills for the film, and now it’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for: the first trailer for Captain America: The Winter Soldier has just debuted online.

It’s an iTunes trailer so it isn’t embeddable, but we’ll update with an embedded version as soon as one is available. We simply wanted to get this one to you as fast as possible. It’s really a fantastic trailer, and you need to watch it now.

Briefly: Following the new poster released just yesterday, Marvel today debuted two new stills (via USA Today) and a 10-second teaser for Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Of course, the full trailer for the film launches tomorrow, and teaser trailers for trailers are stupid, but it at least gives you a multiple second taste of what you’ll see in longer form tomorrow.

‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ Teaser Poster Released

While we’re bound to see more Captain America at San Diego Comic-Con next week, Disney has just debuted the teaser poster for next year’s Phase Two film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Being a teaser poster, the image really reveals nothing about the movie. Instead, it’s simply a cool, stylish shot of a war-torn shield, with the film’s April 4th release date underneath.

First Footage From Joon-Ho Bong’s ‘Snowpiercer’ Featured In Featurette

A new featurette has been released for Joon-Ho Bong’s Snowpiercer, the upcoming adaptation of the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette. The fearutte shows off the first bits of footage from the film which stars Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Ed Harris and many others.

Snowpiercer is set in a future where, after a failed experiment to stop global warming, an Ice Age kills off all life on the planet except for the inhabitants of the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe and is powered by a sacred perpetual-motion engine. A class system evolves on the train but a revolution brews. The remaining populace aboard the train have been divided into strict social classes with the poorest at the back of the train and high society at the front. A revolution begins at the back that will not be deterred until it reaches the very front.

No release date has been set yet.

First Official Image From ‘Snowpiercer’ Released

The first official image has been released from director Bong Joon-ho’s (The Host) highly-anticipated Hollywood debut Snowpiercer, which is based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige. The film stars stars Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Alison Pill, John Hurt, Ed Harris, Octavia Spencer and Song Kang-ho. Check out the first image from the film below.

Snowpiercer is expected to hit theaters sometime this summer. No release date has been set.

Chris Evans Reveals When ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ Begins Filming

Producton is underway on both Marvel Studios Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World, we should expect an Iron Man 3 trailer very soon and we’ve begun to see the return of Chris Hemsworth as the Asgardian god via set photos. So, what’s next on Marvels schedule? Well, none other than the return of Steve Rogers in the definitely highly anticipated Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Chris Evans recently revealed to Collider when the film would begin shooting:

That gives this film around a 13-month production timeline which is the same amount of time that Captain America: The First Avenger had and should definitely not give the directing team of the Russo Brothers any trouble hitting that April 4th released date. We should also definitely expect to see some footage at next year’s San Diego Comic Con so better get ready for Hall H early. If you’re like me…”phase two” definitely can’t come fast enough.
