Most directors would envy a debut as successful as Marc Webb’s 2009 Golden Globe-nominated film, (500) Days of Summer. Webb then took a bit of a leap by following-up his rom-com with superhero blockbusters, The Amazing Spider-Man and its 2014 sequel. But success is fickle in this industry and, like many do, the filmmaker has gone from being handed a major franchise to taking on the new limited-release drama, Gifted.

Chris Evans trades in his Captain America uniform for a much simpler life as Frank Adler, a boat repairman raising his deceased sister’s child, Mary (Mckenna Grace), who’s firm understanding of advanced mathematics is a rarity. But as Frank pushes Mary towards a conventional childhood built on playing and making friends in the public school sector, rather than a taxing life of studying rigorous mathematics at a specialized institution, his mother (Lindsay Duncan) resurfaces and takes legal action with a custody battle over guardianship of the seven year-old girl.

As a professor of mathematics myself, Gifted‘s distinct premise certainly raised my interest. Marc Webb’s latest work attempts to master the delicate balance between a hearty drama and frequent humor. Chris Evans’ sarcastic delivery feels organic and newcomer McKenna Grace offers an impressive turn as well, however the entire cast ultimately becomes limited by a one-dimensional screenplay. At it’s core, Gifted merely scratches the surface of its fundamental moral quandary regarding whether or not a truly exceptional child prodigy should be pushed towards a lifetime commitment of study and research as a duty to humanity, or if they’re should also be entitled to a “normal” upbringing. But rather than tackling this issue head-on, Gifted tip-toes around the predicament with an overly sentimental examination of its story. Regrettably, co-stars Octavia Spencer and Jenny Slate find their talents wasted as expendable characters who are written into the script as obvious fillers. Yet. while Gifted does manage to boast a few tender moments of cinematic expression, they are far to0 sporadic to withstand a fatally flawed screenplay from writer Tom Flynn.

Briefly: It was all the way back in 2013 when Sony announced an expanded Spider-Man universe, which was set to include Venom and Sinister Six spinoff films.

Well, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sucked, Sony shuttered the expanded universe (along with The Amazing Spider-Man franchise), and fans everywhere were also pretty convinced that this (or a) Venom film wouldn’t see the light of day.

Until just now, that is, as THR has just revealed that a Sony has just hired Dante Harper to write the script.

Harper did some rewrites on the fantastic Edge of Tomorrow, and also co-wrote the Jamie Foxx/Dermot Mulroney flick Sleepless Nights.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see where this one goes, and just how it’ll tie in with the upcoming Marvel-produced Tom Holland Spider-Man reboot. Could we one day see our MCU heroes face off against the symbiote?

In any case, there are a ton of incredible Venom storylines for Harper to draw from. Which ones would you like to see on screen? Who would you like to see play Eddie Brock? Sound out below!

James Horner has tragically passed away. He was 61.

Reported on Monday by his assistant Sylvia Patrycja on Facebook, the Oscar-winning film composer was piloting a plane 60 miles north of Santa Barbara. The plane was reported down by police, but it was unknown what happened to its pilot until now. (Source.)

Not much is known beyond that, including what happened during his flight, but I personally think that stuff is irrelevant right now. We’ll know that when we’re told, let’s not speculate. We lost a great artist, and that’s what’s important.

To say James Horner had a stellar career is an understatement. In his short 61 years on Earth, Horner earned himself immortality by leaving his mark in the world of cinema. He scored countless of iconic movies we’ll remember until our civilization is dust.

You can scroll through the long list yourself, but some key works you’ll probably be most interested in include Star Trek II: The Wrath of KhanAliens, A Beautiful MindAn American Tail (which he earned an Oscar nom for), Field of Dreams (another Oscar nomination), Apollo 13 (yet another Oscar nom), and Titanic (an Oscar WIN). His career certainly doesn’t end there, not when there are more Oscars to get nominated for, but to list them all would be a chore. The upcoming Southpaw will be his latest work.

James Horner was just one of the best. There is comparison, but that’s not the time or place for that now.

There’s one work in particular of his I’d like to highlight: Casper.

Let’s be clear: Casper is kind of a shitty movie. It’s sweet but tonally confusing, with numbingly slow pacing and flawed direction. But if there’s one saving grace, it’s James Horner’s score. Fusing together an ethereal, angelic mystique over a sleepy northeastern harbor town resulted in a beautiful, utterly haunting score that deserves both adjectives. Puns be damned. Most of the soundtrack takes on a whimsical flair — with some tweaking it could score a romantic comedy set in Manhattan — but Horner hits his stride on the Casper soundtrack with “Casper’s Lullaby.” I guarantee that if you play this song to anyone who had any kind of memory with Casper, this is the one that will trigger every sensation and memory.

I thought I’d share this one with you today. It may be tasteless, given that it’s a movie about ghosts and it plays at every scene that tugs so hard on your heartstrings it feels disingenuous, but I really think it’s one of Horner’s best and most under appreciated compositions. Whatever memories you attach to this or to any of Horner’s other work, I hope they are pleasant enough to make you smile when the day is difficult. And not to drag in the ugly outside world right now, but for many of us the very recent times have been testing our patience and tolerance. We still don’t know how to live with each other peacefully, but if art makes life worth living then I hope there’s some art in Horner’s work that inspires you to keep on going. This one is mine.

We were so, so close.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the recent hacker attacks against Sony (speculatively as a protest for The Interview, I think it’s protesting Annie) revealed emails exchanged between the higher-ups of Sony and Marvel Studios about possibly joining together to create a new Spider-Man trilogy. This plan also would have involved Spider-Man taking part in Captain America: Civil War.

Based on the conversations, Sony would have maintained “creative control” along with marketing and distribution, while Marvel Studios would bear the burden of producing all three new movies. We have an obsession with trilogies in these things. Obviously, these plans fell through.

From WSJ:

The e-mails reveal extensive discussions between executives at Sony and Marvel owner Walt Disney, all the way up to their respective chief executives Kaz Hirai and Robert Iger.

In an Oct. 30 e-mail, Sony Pictures president Doug Belgrad tells Ms. Pascal about a potential scenario that would see Marvel produce a new trilogy of Spider-Man movies while Sony retains “creative control, marketing and distribution.”

In a separate e-mail, Ms. Pascal tells a business partner that Marvel wanted to include Spider-Man in its planned third “Captain America” movie.

Equally as interesting, Sony hasn’t given up on Spider-Man, nor have they given up revamping their property. Instead of just going ahead with The Amazing Spider-Man 3, they seem to be taking the New York webslinger in a totally different (but not far-out) direction: Putting Spider-Man into the realm of action comedy.

From WSJ:

As of late November, executives were planning a “Spidey summit” for January to discuss future plans.  Among projects in development are an animated Spider-Man comedy that would be produced by Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the team behind “22 Jump Street” and “The Lego Movie,” as well as previously disclosed Spider-Man spin-offs focused on villain team Sinister Six, super-foe Venom, and women from the webslinger’s life.

So from Sony, we may get a cartoon Spider-Man film meant for laughs, and then a (presumably) a dark summer action film involving a ton of villains. Um, OK.

The part where Spider-Man was almost in Captain America: Civil War intrigues me the most, because of exactly what you think. Civil War. Spider-Man was the red dot in the crosshairs of that Marvel event, and to have Spider-Man be a part of it in the film would be one step closer to making the film faithful to that series. In some ways I’m happy the film is diverting (as far as we know) from that series, but it’s the roads less traveled that always seem appealing.

Regardless of Civil War, I’m still mad Sony and Marvel couldn’t get together. In high school and college there were friends you wanted to set up with other friends because you think they would be a cute couple. I’m not ready to give up on these two singles-ready-to-mingle yet.

Ian Kerner wasn’t shy about his dislike of The Amazing Spider-Man… in fact, I don’t think either of us were. So what drew us back to the theaters for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, a movie that has received the worst reviews of any movie in the Spider-Man franchise? Well, it’s Spider-Man, that’s why! But could we be surprised by the outcome? Is it possible that we will dislike this movie more than the last… or could it possibly surprise us? Briefly: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been delayed on Xbox One.

The rumour first broke when NeoGAF noted that the Xbox One version had completely disappeared from the game’s official site official site. Now, Activision has released an official statement:

“We are working with Microsoft in an effort to release The Amazing Spider-Man 2 video game on Xbox One. Currently, the game will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and the PC on April 29, 2014 as previously announced.”

It’s a very strange postponement. With the game’s launch less than two weeks away, shouldn’t The Amazing Spider-Man 2 have gone gold some time ago?

In any case, if you’re wanting to pick up Beenox’s latest tie in, you’ll have to grab it for a different console, at least for now. We’ll let you know as soon as we hear more!

Briefly: So it turns out that Drew Goddard is a pretty busy guy.

Back in December, Sony announced plans to release both Venom and Sinister Six spinoffs of The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. A five person team of Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon, and Drew Goddard formed a “brain trust” to continue the Amazing Spider-Man franchise with a consistent tone (and maintain the connections between each film).

Goddard was already set to write the announced Sinister Six spinoff, and as THR has reported, it now looks like he’ll be directing it too.

It’s interesting to see Drew Goddard’s name here, as the talented writer/director was recently tapped to write (and maybe direct) the Daredevil series for Netflix. In any case, it certainly raises my hopes for a film about six villains that haven’t been introduced yet.

Are you down for the spinoff, or would you rather see the main The Amazing Spider-Man series better establish itself first

Briefly: If you’re lucky enough to be headed to a 7PM IMAX showing of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on May 1st, you have an awesome poster to pick up while you’re there.

Sony has entrusted Mondo with the one-sheet, and as you’d expect, it’s totally phenomenal.

Take a look at the image below, and let us know if you’l be headed to one of the first IMAX screenings!

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

Briefly: As repetitive as it could sometimes be, I was a big fan of Beenox’s video game adaptation of The Amazing Spider-Man. Swinging through a high-definition New York with Arkham City style combat was a blast, and as the game’s light plot was leaps and bounds ahead of the film (which isn’t saying much), I kept coming back for more.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 video game was announced all the way back at New York Comic-Con, and Activision has just launched a new trailer for the title. The new footage definitely shows the graphical leap from the first title, and this trailer focusses on the myriad of villains featured in the title.

As longs as The Amazing Spider-Man 2 features more variety than the first title, we’ll be in for a fun ride (again, swinging through the city was cool, but the city simply had nothing to do in it). Take a look at the new trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be picking it up! The title will launch on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, 3DS, and Windows on April 29th!

Briefly: I don’t really know what to say about this. It kind of reminds me of a Scotty Young cover… gone terribly, terribly wrong.

Evian just launched this The Amazing Spider-Man 2 water commercial, and it features a dancing Spider-Man, and a dancing Spider-Baby. You can watch it below if you dare.

Don’t say that I didn’t warn you.

Briefly: Aside from Electro, Sony hasn’t really released a good, close-up shot of any of The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s other villains.

Today, the studio released a great shot of the usually silly-looking Green Goblin, and he actually looks kind of sinister.

Take a look at the still below, and let us know if this changes your opinion on the character’s look! The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theatres on May 2nd!

Briefly: We’re now just a few weeks away from the highly anticipated release of Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and a new featurette for the film has just debuted online.

In the video, The Walking Dead VFX Supervisor Greg Nicotero and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 VFX Supervisor Jerome Chan chat about… well, what else? VFX of course!

With The Walking Dead‘s fourth season coming to a close next Sunday, and The Amazing Spider Man 2 launching just a few week’s later (not to mention Captain America: The Winter Soldier next week), it’s clearly a fantastic time to be a geek. Take a look at the short featurette below, and let us know what you think!

Briefly: I’ve had pretty mixed feelings for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 marketing thus far; we’ll get a great trailer, followed by a poor one, followed by a great clip, and then a stupid on, and so on. I’m happy to say that the film’s just-released final trailer falls in the positive category.

It features a ton of new footage, and it also gives us our first non-still look at the still stupid-looking Green Goblin, as well as the actually-pretty-cool-in-motion Rhino.

In any case, take a look at the new trailer below, and remember that the best promises are the ones you can’t keep. The Amazing Spider-Man hits theatres on May 2nd.

The (fairly low-res) stills give us a good look at the face of our new Green Goblin among other things. I still really dislike the way that the villain looks (redditor lixik had a pretty great description, stating that he “looks like Frankie Muniz trying to play gollum.”)

In any case, you can take a look at the new stills below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the feature. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theatres on May 1st.

The studio has started teasing the film’s final trailer with new promo photos featuring the movie’s villains. Yesterday, the following image of Rhino debuted online:

Today, it’s a photo of the Green Goblin:

Spidey’s banter as he attempts to grab each vial from the truck comes off as really silly, and not in a good way. Take a look at the clip below, and let us know if you agree.

The scene certainly looks intense (aside from Jamie Foxx’s electric blue, which I’m still having a hard time getting used to), and is one of the better clips that we’ve seen from the film so far. Take a look at the video below, and let us know what you think!

The video contains a ton of new footage and a lot of new plot revelations, so if you’re trying to head to the theatre surprised, I’d recommend that you avoid the video. It also contains way too much dubstep for any movie trailer, but other than that, it’s a pretty cool watch.

So, since the film doesn’t already have enough villains, do you think that the Spider-Slayers could be making an appearance as well? Or is Webb just planting the seed for a future film?

Briefly: Sony teased us with the first half of their Amazing Spider-Man 2 Super Bowl spot last Thursday. Today, the studio both completed the spot, and also released a sweet, sweet three minute and fifty second long “Villains Unite” trailer for the film.

The spot may reveal some important details about the feature (like the apparent fate of Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacey), and the trailer delves into the origins of Jamie Foxx’s Max Dillon. While I didn’t really like the film’s first trailer, I thoroughly enjoyed everything that Sony released today.

The images give us (as always) a better look at Electro, Harry talking to a (masked) Spider-Man, Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacey in distress, and a few other surprises. Take a look at everything below, and let us know what you think! The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theatres on May 2nd!

Briefly: We knew that it wouldn’t last forever, but it’s ending sooner than I’d hoped. Dan Slott’s excellent Superior Spider-Man is set to end this March, and an all-new The Amazing Spider-Man will launch in April.

Just as most others seemed to be, I was skeptical when Superior was first announced, but quickly fell in love with the vastly different series. Now, just when Superior Spider-Man is at its best, its set to end all too soon. The numerous changes to Peter’s life, however, will not be ending with it, as Slott told Yahoo today, “Everyone’s expecting that it’s going to be a nightmare, a landscape of broken friends and crushed dreams, but there’s another side to it, too. When Peter went out, Doc Ock crashed course through college and got him a doctorate, got him a girlfriend and got him his own company.”

He even made a child cry, stating that “To do that for a solid year of my life, that’s the hardest thing I’ve had to do — to look small children in the eye at a convention and lie to them. One of them with an honest-to-God Little League uniform and a quivering lip. Inside, part of me was dying.”

In any case, as a long-time reader, I’m excited to see what happens next. Take a look at the cover art for the first issue below, and let us know what your thoughts are on Superior Spider-Man, and the fact that it’s ending!

Briefly: With all of the recent The Amazing Spider-Man 2 marketing (did you catch the Times Square trailer from earlier this week?), it’s been made very apparent that Electro is the main villain in the film. I’d question whether or not Rhino would even make an appearance had we not seen a quick clip of him in the film’s first trailer.

Sony has just debuted three new international posters for the film, and keeping with the trend, Rhino is nowhere to be seen. As usual, Jamie Foxx’s Electro falls front and centre in each image.

Take a look at the posters below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the film (and where the hell you think that Rhino could be). The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theatres on May 2nd!

Briefly: During last night’s New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square, Sony showed off a cool new trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The footage is introduced by Stan Lee himself (who just turned 91), and offers us yet another look at Jamie Foxx as Electro in the film.

Take a look at the footage below, and let us know: what do you think of the Electro design? Does he look bad-ass, or a little too Mr. Freeze (thanks for that one Daniel)?

Briefly: The latest issue of Empire Magazine is now on newsstands, and along with a bad-ass cover that reveals a new piece of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the issue also debuted two new stills from The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Take a look at the new shots below, and let us know what you think! Are you looking forward to The Amazing Spider-Man 2? What did you think of the first Amazing Spider-Man?

That clearly looks like Dane DeHaan’s Harry Osbourne standing below Dillon in that second shot, doesn’t it? Do we smell a team-up (probably)?
