For more than a decade the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has branded 19 films in total that have completely merged together in what’s guaranteed to be this summer’s most lucrative blockbuster, Avengers: Infinity War. Now, we’ve been down similar roads before with Marvel’s first ambitious multi-hero collaboration, The Avengers, and with both the film’s sequel, Age of Ultron, and the third Captain America installment, Civil War.  The success of these grandiose endeavors have been met with varying levels of success, casting a huge question-mark over the MCU’s newest title. But allow me to wash away any worries you may have by fearlessly labeling Infinity War as one of the top films to-date in Marvel’s ever-expanding universe.

Despite their conflicting opinions regarding oversight of their Earth-protecting superhero group “The Avengers”, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) must put their differences aside and get the old team back together when they learn of a cosmic villain named Thanos (Josh Brolin) who’s en route to their home planet. Thanos is on a mission to collect all six infinity stones, hidden artifacts that possess unimaginable power, and he pinpoints a pair of them located on Earth where he’ll stop at nothing to acquire them and bring balance to the galaxy. And with the fate of humanity on the line, Marvel’s greatest superheroes must confront their most powerful foe yet.

Prior to Infinity War, little was known about the film’s primary antagonist, Thanos. And although this approach is a foreign concept within the familiar formulaic structure that’s helped mold the MCU into an unstoppable machine, the character of Thanos is met with bold originality that makes Infinity War “his” film. Rarely is a villain gifted such an enormous responsibility, but Thanos makes the most of his opportunity and commands the viewer’s sympathy with a unique perspective to what’s perceived by The Avengers as an evil plot. Both his character and his mission are propelled by surprising depth that will make the audience question their own ethical beliefs. With Infinity War, sibling directors Joe and Anthony Russo create a moral dilemma in which there may be no right or wrong answer, but instead resolve must come from a desperate battle for survival between Thanos and Marvel’s assorted collection of superheroes. Yet, while the film’s story is as compelling as its uptempo action and finely-tuned pacing, Infinity War does sour with overly sappy dramatics that artificially attempt to raise the emotional stakes. Nevertheless, these cheaply constructed moments take a backseat to Infinity War‘s cerebral and multi-dimensional tale that culminates with a cliff-hanging finale guaranteed to keep you longing for the next chapter in Marvel’s elaborate cinematic universe.

Personally, I needed Marvel’s latest inclusion, Thor: Ragnarok, to redeem its title character’s overlying franchise. After 2012’s The Dark World dragged the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to an all-time-low, the God of Thunder quickly transformed into one of the MCU’s most uninspiring characters. And while critics and audiences alike have heaped praise onto new director Taika Waititi’s first go-around with Thor, let’s be clear that Ragnarok isn’t nearly as impressive as you’ve been made to believe.

When Thor (Chris Hemsworth) returns to Asgard, he finds Loki (Tom Hiddleston) posing as Odin and learns of his father’s self-imposed exile. As Thor and Loki venture to find and confront their father, Odin’s first-born and demonically powerful daughter Hela (Cate Blanchett) returns to claim the throne of a vulnerable Asgard. Meanwhile, Thor and Loki find themselves trapped on a planet of outsiders where they form a special team that returns to Asgard and battles Hela in order to save their home.

To varying degrees of success, Ragnarok‘s campy delivery pokes fun at the formulaic approach used widely within the MCU. This hyper-exaggeration leads to a whole new level of comedic absurdity that, fairly stated, comes with a nearly equal share of hysterical hits and hokey misses. Thankfully, though, Ragnarok also incorporates a more stylish vibe, courtesy of new helmer Taika Waititi, and this refreshing overhaul to one of Marvel’s least interesting Avengers brings edginess and excitement to a spin-off desperately in need of a boost. Chris Hemsworth benefits from this complete redirection of his character and he’s joined by the towering talents of Cate Blanchett who illuminates a strong villainous foe to the story. And while Ragnarok’s reemergence of Mark Ruffalo’s the Hulk is both bold and spirited, in a gladiator-esque battle scene that’s worth the price of admission all on its own, the introduction of Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie character proves a far-less compelling addition. Consequently, Ragnarok comes with its ups and downs, but the film also places Thor back on track and propels him into the spotlight as the MCU gears up towards its highly anticipated Infinity War.

Well, it took 10 years and 3 phases in the making, but Avengers Infinity War is now closer than ever.

It seems as though we’ve known about this movie since the start of the MCU, just patiently biding time until we get up to this point. While other companies try and rush out cinematic universes for quick cash, they’ve all paled in comparison to the time, care, and planning that goes into the MCU. The first official trailer for the film dropped just this morning and fans are already going nuts. The video already has over 10 million views and been trending like crazy. No trailer play by play this time, just sit back and enjoy the trailer. Avengers Infinity War will release on May 4th, 2018.

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ has arrived and it is glorious! Crammed to the gills with action, humor, massive set pieces and wonderful character moments, Thor’s 3rd solo film is widely regarded as his best yet. Do we agree? I sit down with Ian Kerner for another Geekscape special to discuss the cameos, Thor VS Hulk, Hela’s status as one of the best villains in the MCU, the adaptation of ‘Planet Hulk’, how ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ fits into the wider MCU, what it means for ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and so much more! You know Ian is going to bring the knowledge and there is a LOT to talk about this film so listen up and enjoy!

That’s right! Even though we’re still over a year out from the end of Phase 3, Marvel has already begun filming on Avengers: Infinity War!

To celebrate, the studio has released a teaser online featuring Robert Downey Jr., Tom Holland, and Chris Pratt talking about the start of filming the movie. They talk about how The Avengers will finally team up with The Guardians to face off against Thanos. Kevin Feige also talks about how Thanos won’t be like previous Marvel movie villains, as he will actually pose as a major threat. The video ends with a short clip of the infinity gauntlet being revealed. Check out the video for more below!

For those impatient, just think of it this way. We only have 3 more films until Infinity War. You can wait 3 more films right? No? Me too, but we really have no other choice. Avengers: Infinity War will release on May 4th, 2018. Are you excited for the film? What upcoming phase 3 film are you most looking forward to? Tell us in the comments below!

Okay, sorry for the sensational title. It’s really not like that. I just happened to have finished reading some more Blogster Doom jokes and felt a little Click-Baity.

I just returned from an event on the Disney lot celebrating the release next week of James Gunn’s beloved Guardians of the Galaxy on Digital HD (and on Blu-Ray December 9th ) in which he did a short Q&A. One of the questions asked about whether the sequel would explore Peter’s origin, alluded to in the first movie, and whether or not it would parallel the Brian Michael Bendis penned Guardians storyline. In response, James said that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a lot like the Ultimate Marvel universe and that they can be completely different things. He doesn’t have to make Peter’s father the leader of the Spartax Empire and that he’s not very fond of the name “J’son” which got a few laughs. To paraphrase Gunn: “there are things that work in the comics that don’t really work on screen” and that sticking to the comics origin might be a little too “Star Wars”.

James also made it clear that he had full reign with the Guardians sequel and that the weirder his ideas were for the first film the more Marvel seemed enthusiastic to go in that direction. Considering this is my favorite Marvel movie so far, I’m glad they put that much trust in his unique voice! He didn’t confirm that the sequel would actually address Peter’s origin, just that he knows he doesn’t intend to stick to the comics. In fact, future films that he makes at Marvel may not be Guardians films at all but he did show a fondness for the galactic corner of the universe. James also stated that what happens in the Guardians films may have zero impact on Marvel’s Phase 3 and the events in Avengers: Infinity War 1 & 2.

Of the Blu-Ray bonus features shown to us, the deleted scenes were short but definitely the highlight. One of the best scenes was an exchange between Gamora and Nebula on the Dark Astor, shortly after Ronan tells Gamora to find the Orb. It helps illuminate their tortured relationship with each other and being raised by Thanos and has a lot of character and information but was cut early because there was just “too much time on the Dark Astor and it slowed down the first act”.

Two of the later cut scenes involved Rocket and Groot arguing by the fountain before trying to capture Peter (which was hilarious) and a scene with Gamora shortly after leaving the Dark Astor in which she kills Ronan’s troops that were sent to accompany her. Pretty great stuff that sets up all of the characters meeting on their own. Another hilarious cut scene involved John C. Reilly’s Nova Corps member trying to fix one of the busted lights on the front of his jacket.

All in all, I can’t wait to rematch this film on Blu-Ray. I love how unique the movie is and how much it showcases the diverse aspects of the Marvel universe we all grew up with. The Behind The Scenes extra on designing Groot and Rocket really shows the care and thought that went into bringing these more challenging characters to screen and why I think they ended up so relatable (even if they’re a talking raccoon and plant!)

I definitely recommend each of you seek out this release for yourselves next week, not only to relive an awesome film but also for a pretty entertaining set of extras. I’m glad I attended. Thanks for the invite, Marvel!
